Mentir Para Vivir #25 Fri 11/8/13 Bad Boy Berto Gets Bagged; Ricardo and Oriana Get Tagged

Cap. #25

At Paloma’s expansive manse Oriana, aka 2nes, is pacing the floors and driving Paloma (as well as Viewerville) crazy worrying about Ricardo’s safety.  If she’s that worried, suggests Paloma with wizened certitude, she should never have broken off their relationship.  2nes says no, they should never have allowed one to develop in the first place!

Across town at their new B&B, Lucina and Raquel are discussing their list of invitees to their upcoming open house.  Lucina mentions that Raqi needs to be a bit more tolerant of Oriana since she’s going through a bad spell.  The cause?  It seems that Jose Luis never really died and is now in Hermosillo!  Raqi’s first thought is that he’ll bring the Colombian authorities down on all their heads and Oriana and the two of them will end up being cellmates.   Perhaps the Colombian authorities figured to follow him here so they could track down his wife, suggests Raqi.  No, they’d have already pounced if that was the case, reasons Lucina.  He no doubt escaped and is here to get his wife and daughter back!  “—Poor Oriana!  She’s walking an emotional tightrope about now!”  Cara de serves-the-wench-right de Raqi.

Back at the manse, Mathilde barges in with Paloma’s daily doctor-dissing dose of apple.  She mockingly adds her sympathies for 2nes’s tearful break-up with Ric over the misunderstanding of a supposed second admirer—uh, Berto?— who so romantically and shabbily left that anonymous note about how he will ”never forget her”.   Paloma and 2nes frown and bite their tongues.  (Smart move considering the way Mad Hilde is waving that paring knife around at them!)  Not to worry, says Mocking Maddy as she makes to leave.  “—I’m on your side, Ines!”  She leaves and they both have to shake off the willies.

Paloma makes a face and throws the apple, core and all onto the floor.  “--She drives me batty!”  (What drives me batty is that pleated peach dress 2nes is wearing!  A rotten choice for somebody with a backside much larger than the topside.)  So,  now 2nes is forced to confess that those flowers were left, she believes, by her still very much alive husband who’s now in Hermosillo, having tracked her there.   Cara de Ruh-roh! de Abuela Paloma.   “—No wonder you broke it off with Ricardo!  But why didn’t he come in person to deliver them?”  Our distraught damsel sobs, distressed to the max.  “--Who can say?  Perhaps it was Berto after all.” Just then Ric calls 2nes’ phone.  They’ve got a plan to put the screws to the blackmailer.

That night the group puts the plan into play.  Padre Mariano has ditched the plaid for a dirty raincoat and ball cap from the church’s last charity rummage sale.  Oriana leaves the bag of bills in the middle of the back alley and leaves.  Berto sneaks over for the pick up with a pistol in his hand.  In swoops the disguised padre, ready to make off with the loot just as Berto shoves the pistol in his back and tells him to stay put, that that money is his.  Ric comes out of the shadows behind Berto and says sorry sucker, but that money’s not going anywhere.  Suddenly Berto grabs Mariano by the neck and shoves him in front and puts his gun to Mariano’s neck.  It looks like Berto’s won the day…er, the night and the $5 mil, as Ric has to put down his gun and kick it away.  (Too bad he can’t kick off those ugly nubuck top-siders.  Ever heard of navy, dude?)  But loyal doggy Piero suddenly appears from the far side of the alley and Berto is forced to drop his gun, but not until after some shooting in which Pierro is shot in the shoulder and knocked off his feet, momentarily  unconscious.   Ric and Berto scramble for Berto’s gun.  Mariano gets the upper hand and the Bertie’s lost.  Ric’s got the upper hand next and trusses Berto up  before taking him back to the batch pad to discuss the why’s and wherefor’s.

Ric takes a moment to call Oriana with the good news.  “—It’s all over and the problem’s settled [saldar= settled, finished, put an end to] now.”  Big hug with Paloma.

While he’s tied up, Berto claims he knows 2nes is really Oriana Caligaris and claims he deserved all that cash for keeping silent about her true identity.  He also claims that she was the one who murdered Ric’s daddy cuz he saw her there in San Carlos when the murder went down and heard Gabe call her Oriana.  Ric says, well FYI, the gun she took away from her daughter was only a .22 and the one from the autopsy was a .44—the same size caliber of the gun he just used on them in the alley!  Oh, says Berto, that was a gun for shooting practice (???) that he kept at his house in Tiajuana  (the one he and Lila shared ?) while his daddy was still alive.  Oh, so did Lila go to shooting practice with Berto then and maybe she was the one who murdered Gabe?  No, of course not!  Berto wants to know why so much interest in Oriana!  For the truth’s sake, because Oriana obviously wasn’t the murderer!  (Nice way to dodge, Ricky-Boy!)

It turns out that Berto was only spying on Lucina, he says, since he and Lila wondered if she might inherit something when Gabe died, having been his lover somewhere along the line.  He recognized Oriana the day he met her for the reading of the will and divvying up of Gabe’s company stock.  Ric grabs Berto by his mangy locks and tells him he never heard his daddy use the name “Oriana”!  And if he forgets appropriately, he will not report him for the blackmail attempt and will keep the gun he used rather than turn it over to the police as the possible murder weapon.   Berto agrees and swears again that he was not the one who killed Gabriel.

A bit later Ric goes over to the parish rectory and fills Mariano in on Berto’s situation and the deal he made with Berto.  He learns that faithful Perro only got a graze and a sore shoulder from the bullet.  Ric concedes that he still suspects it was either Berto or Lila now who murdered his father.  Mariano is drop-jaw impactado at the suggestion that Lila could have murdered her hubby.

Later on that night, way past everyone’s bedtime, Ric comes back to Paloma’s to fill Oriana in on the evening’s events in detail.   She is full of kisses and hugs.  They end up making love in Palomita’s old playroom.

The next morning she calls him at home to declare how much she loves him.  He tells her how much she means to him as well.  They are totally in love with one another.  Only one problem remains: how to explain all this to Abuela Paloma?  (Actually there are two—what to do about Jose Luis, especially if he shows up and Alina finds out—but Ric would rather leave the problem stuff for later and loll around remembering the hot sex they had the night before.

Meanwhile, Berto is hanging out in some cheap motel room, leaving unanswered messages to call him ASAP, on Lila’s phone while she is still in bed making the most of her beauty rest.  (Hint, time to take a bath if you can smell what everybody else does, fool!)

At the same time, Jose Luis continues following Oriana and spying on her and Alina.  He sees Ric pull up.  JL notes how Oriana and he seem overly affectionate with one another.    Ric and she make a lunch date and seal it with a kiss.  JL is flabbergasted impactado.  (Hmmm.  Guess she really meant it, Jose Luis, when she told you that night at the airport that you were dead to her and she never wanted to see you again.)

2nes goes back inside the hacienda to give the “appropriate” details from last night to “her abuela.”  The money’s been returned; Ric says Berto just let his ambition and greed get in the way of his good sense…..  How did he learn about her past?  Perhaps he hired a P.I. just like Paloma did with Santos, says 2nes.  And how did Ric convince him to keep quiet about it all?  He threatened him with jail if he caused then anymore grief.  Paloma hopes that that’s enough to keep the misguided young man’s mouth shut.  “—¡Ojalá!

Later that morning Berto is refused entrance into the offices of the textile factory.  Apparently, he thought that their agreement would have covered that little detail and all things would return to normal.  (Not so, grasshopper!)  He gets snitty with the guard but has no choice except to leave.  He walks off and makes another last ditch attempt to get hold of Lila.  She finally is awake and answers her phone.  They make a lunch date.

Lucina, meanwhile, comes over to Paloma’s and gives them an invitation to the open house.

Ric visits the rectory to check on his faithful perro de Piero.   Mariano gave him a “home-remedy”[remedio casero] for the scrape and sore arm, he says.   Pierro got the 411 from Mariano.  Ric mentions that Berto’s gun is the same caliber as the one that killed Gabe, but that since he and Berto made a pact to keep quiet about Oriana, Ric won’t be able to turn the gun in and to have it tested to see if it was the one that was used in his daddy’s murder.  The next big problem on the horizon is Oriana’s husband.  If he really is alive, she’s still married and that would be a hassle for all of them if he wants to pursue her.

Back at Paloma’s, Ruben returns in a good mood after his round of golf with his buds.  He’s especially excited at seeing Lucina there.  When she gives him his invitation, the others note his affectionate rub of Lucina’s hand.  Once she’s gone, Paloma asks 2nes her opinion.  2nes isn’t aware of anything going on between them.  Paloma notes that Madhilde didn’t get an invitation.  They figure it was because nobody can stand Madhilde, so no reason to bother inviting her.

At lunch, Berto lies to Lila that the reason he and Ric had it out was because supposedly he and 2nes had an affair.  It came to a fight and Ric got hold of the gun which he was told was the same caliber as the one that was used to kill Gabe.  Lila is angry he would do something so foolish.  He knows he done bad cuz he’s aware they’d both be under suspicion if the police there got wind of it all!  But she didn’t do it, she insists.  He insists that he didn’t shoot Gabe, either.  But, who’s to say that was the gun that shot him, wonders Lila.  “—Perhaps it was you who shot him!  You’ve always been a pain in my side!”  Berto--either not the brightest bulb in the box, or  he’s really guilty and doesn’t know how to lie any better, or both, which is my best guess—swears he’s not going to risk it, anyway.  “—Until we are sure [mientras que son peras o manzanas= while you’re not sure one way or the other] it’s out of our hands.”  He throws a shifty sidelong glance as he watches her distress over the possibility of their becoming involved as murder suspects.

Jose Luis has followed his wife to the restaurant.  He and Eliseo sit in the adjoining room eating –well, slobby Eliseo is at least enjoying the meal—while he stares at Ric and Oriana making out with [besuquear= covering with kisses] each other.  He’s absolutely floored to see her kiss him so passionately.  Jose Luis wears a brokenhearted expression as he looks over at Eliseo, having   been oblivious to whatever the slurping imbecile has been mouthing in between crammed gluttonous snorts and swallows.  He watches curiously as Ric then presents her with an engagement ring and wonders if she’ll accept it.  He’s relieved—and encouraged, no doubt-- to see that she refused the ring.  Jose Luis has seen enough and decides to leave Eliseo to his meal.  He gets up and walks out the door.  Oriana looks up just in time to see him from the back.  Again, it’s a male size and form that looks very familiar.  Ric rises to see what he might.  It’s inconclusive to the two of them.

Ric has the maître de come to the table and he describes the man they just saw leave the restaurant.  The maître de tells them that was Sr. Francisco Castro, a regular customer.  Shall he leave a note for the next time he comes in to eat there?  Oh, they thought it was somebody they knew, says Oriana to the maître de, feeling foolish.  No, no reason to.  The maître de leaves.  Ric wants to have a chat with the man rather than to continue blind and frightened over possibly nothing.  Oriana refuses.  He promises her that whatever happens, they’ll overcome it together.

Back at the rectory again, Pierro and Mariano advise Ric against confronting Oriana’s husband.  Mariano’s certain that if he was able to buy off the authorities in Mexico to evade the Colombian authorities, Calivaris must have a lot of people working for him and be pretty powerful.  He’s nobody you want to mess with, agrees Pierro.  Watch and wait, offers Mariano.

Ric then gets a call from Berto.  He fills Ric in on what he lied to Lila about, and gripes that he shouldn’t have been kept from entering the company’s offices.  He won’t tell Lila about Oriana, but says if she finds out, she will want to make sure everybody and their brother knows about her.  He insists again it was not him who killed his papi, but that it might have been, regarding Big Sis, [en turno=??] her own lover, tho’ he can’t remember his name.  (Uh, yeah.)  Berto warns him to be careful with his sister as she generally acts stupider than she really is to throw people off track [navegar con bandera de estupida= lit. sails under a fool’s flag] but she’s very cunning.  Could be she had her lover do it, or did it herself, but arranged it to incriminate him--or not.
===========

Raqi’s getting horny again.  Her thoughts turn to Jose Luis, aka, sexy Francisco Santos.  The two arrange to meet for drinks at the bar in his hotel.

Ok.  Back at Paloma’s again, it’s now time to impress Oriana with some more parenting skills.  Ric brings Lina some video games and leaves to show her how to work them.

Lila checks into the same hotel as has Jose Luis and Berto, aka, TOOHIH (the only other hotel in Hermosillo).  Berto and she, meanwhile, argue over what to do about her speaking to Ric and convincing him to let him back onto the company’s premises.   Fine, she tells the pest, but not till tomorrow!

Meanwhile, in the patio of the hotel, JL tells Raqi he cannot attend the open house because he’ll be away on business.  She continues to flirt and notices he cannot keep his eyes off Lila.  Lila notices him noticing her and returns the compliment with a sophisticated flirtatious glance.  Raqi sees what’s passed between the two of them and explains that the dark haired woman is the widow of the man that was murdered poolside at her old hotel.  She’s a poisonous snake in the grass, says Raqi.

"--She’s upset that her deceased hubby divided his fortune into three, i.e., with her and his two sons, one of which is Sr. Ricardo Sanchez Briton, now part owner of Aresti Textiles", the largest in the region, with Doña Paloma Aresti, the majority shareholder.  "--However, her representative and heir in charge there now is her granddaughter, Ines.”  “—Oh, that woman you told me about.”  Raqi nods.  JL is suddenly very interested in what this dumb blonde has been running on about, because at it turns out, his still lawfully wedded wife is now somehow heiress to a major fortune!  ♪♪♫ Happy days are here again…♫♫♪ --or the Colombian version of that melody--starts playing at high decibals in his brain.

So now it seems that Beg to might not be the murderer. Hmmmm...

That's Berto, not beg to. LOL! The things the tablet comes up with.

For me this episode was fantastic and we arrived to the quarter of telenovela. I can't wait the recap in your fantastic telling-style, I'm excited. :D

As I have said I'm so excited to read your summary, and the money delivering and the shot scene was so exciting. Ferdinando Valencia is a great actor, and Poor Piero. Fortunately, the injury wasn't too serious.

I loved the deportation of Berto into the blue house, the interrogation, the shouts...ahahh, my favourite scene

I wouldn't had sex in the room of Palomita, I think this will cause problems in the future.

Berto's face was so funny when he wanted to reach his sister, and he discovered that he is so smelly and I suggest him a hairwashing too.

Eliseo is too funny, he was goobling, JL almost explosed in his angry. Orinez can start to fear again, only now from JL and not the blackmailer. Poor girl, her life is a chaos.

Alejo- It was a good episode. And it also put into question assumptions we had already made about who the murderer is. Well done writers. I totally wasn't expecting that.

Ricky is a horndog, and boy was he making JL mad, seeing him kiss all over his woman and give her a ring. Smoke was practically coming out of his ears.

Thanks for putting this up, Jardinera. I just want to say that if I were going to do a bribery drop off, I would change into jeans and sneakers.
I love how the good guys won that one. But who knows what a desperate Berto will do now.
Now there seems to be uncertainties over who killed the dad. But if neither Berto nor Lila did it, then who else?

Now how does JL know Lila? I don't think he was looking at her because he just thought she was pretty. Is he an exlover of hers?

Vivi, their kissing scenes are so irritating to me. Just quit please, do it in private.
So funny that Berto wants his job back after what he tried to do.

I think if the sound people would just edit out the smacking sounds of their kisses it would be fine. Someone in the editing room must have picked up on it. I guess this might be why other tns use overpowering music to cover up these incidental sounds.

Vivi, the sound is really bad, but I just feel uncomfortable when people have such intimate interactions in public.

I still think that Berto did it. I watched his expression when he and his sister were at the restaurant. To me, he was conning his sister. He was trying to give himself a defense. I don't believe that she did it. Maybe I'm wrong or I read too much into it.

CathyX, I am so happy I didn't get this episode. If I can't stand to see them kiss either. I think they make them kiss for too long and it makes me uncomfortable but not in a "good way". It's like OK, kiss something else. I'm bored. I do like that he picked her up. I thought DZ was getting old and had a bad back or something.

I like that Ricky is a horndog Vivi. I hope to find a guy just like him. I don't mind that he is so direct and to the point about wanting sex. Geez, he takes or on dates and buys her boulders and tells her how much he likes her. He babies her. I'd be having sex with a guy like him right now while typing this out, if I had one. :-) P.S. I am not having sex right now. I was just using that as an example. But if anyone has a brother like Ricky that likes sex, and is a rich horndog, give 'em my number.

Maybe, that's just my fantasy. Where is Susanlynn and why isn't she watching this TN? She would certainly take my side. LOL

Cynderella, I'm on your side too. I think Ric is a typical guy, at least like the typical guys I know. They always want it all the time for any reason, lol. I think it would be very difficult to write a comment here while having sex though.
It also amazes me how these actors can just pick up the woman so easily, like they weigh nothing, when clearly they aren't the skinny minnies that US actresses are.

LOL Cyn!

The only thing that I find "off putting" about Ricky is buying flowers after sex. It's like a parting gift. I don't like that he did the same thing for both women. It shows a pattern. He does the same for all of his lovers. Although he really does love Oriana, just the fact that he bought Raquel a bouquet, a few days earlier, bugs me.

Cynderella, I always love your sense of humor and just telling it like it is. It is refreshing!! Don't change! Also ITA re the sending of flowers later. Don't like it, but that is ONLY because he had sent some to Raquel which makes me wonder what Little Ricky is really thinking.

Anywho...is this a super TN or what, gang!?

My question: we are seeing some really good writing on the part of the writers. Are these writers a non-Televisa crew or are they some bunch that has been hidden away for ages because right now, they do not look, smell, or feel like the usual Televisa crew.

This really interests me. What gives (and NOT complaining, either!)?

Fatima

Fatima- The producer is Rosy Ocampo. She usually does comedies, that although successful, tend to be long. But La Fuerza del Destino was a rare drama for her, and it had the same feel and pace as this one. And like this one she's keeping it at about 100 capitulos, which is perfect and keeps things fast paced. Also like LFDD, the are doing an original story and not a remake. I think Rosy is working with the same writer here, but I can't be sure.

I should say, a rare adult drama. Rosy typically does comedy tns and kids/teens tns.

Aha! A quick Google search shows the Rosy created a new department at Televisa-- the Innovation department. One of the things this department does is think up new stories to turn into tns. Fancy that! I would not have suspected that Televisa had such a department. Go Rosy!

That's great news. I hope this means we will get more shows of this quality.

I don't see JL as a villain, yet just an adversary. His look was the hottest watch Ricky offer Oriana a ring.

I can't decide if Berto did it or not. He doesn't look as afraid as he should be now that he knows Ricky and his crew suspect him and are not dummies.

Strange that Berto is repulsed by his own stench but still doesn't take a bath. Stranger still that Lila doesn't tell her bro he needs a bath.

Oops, "the hottest watching..." Can't help it, I've fallen for JL.

This is the same staff as in LFDD. Writers: Maria Zarattini and Claudia Velazco. Directors: Benjamin Cann and Rodrigo Zaunbos. Producer: Rosy Ocampo.

(and quite a few actor/actress)

The new style entrada is createD by Zack Linder.

But while the LFDD was successful, Mentir wasn't.
In this time ONLY the CI was a great boom, angd DQTQTQ was sometimes avarage or good.

I was cracking up when Jose was watching Ricky and Oriana. He had crazy eyes and Eliseo waa rubbing it in. His expressions were hysterical!

Cynderella

Alejo- And unfortunately the heads of Televisa probably took the high CI ratings to mean that recycled crap like CI is a better investment than a good original story like MPV. *sigh*

Thanks Fatima! It's very brave of you to admit that you have a sick sense of humor.

Cyderella

Cathyx I too found it hilarious Berto still went to work after trying to blackmail one of the company directors.

I still think Berto is lying. If he didn't do it, he hired someone to do so.

I really want more information on audience numbers & programs so I can try to understand how Uni makes these horrible programming decisions. According to Jarocha, CI was viewed in the afternoon and did well in ratings in MX. LT was viewed in the evening with high competition and had poor ratings in MX. So MPV didn't do well, did PEAM do well?

I think Rosy Ocampo's department for innovation had bad luck, they produced Las Tontas no van al Cielo and Camaleones with not so great results. Especially Camaleones.

MPV didn't do that bad, it was okay for its timeslot. María Zarattini always does at least good stories that get all right ratings, even if I find her heroines a little weak sometimes. But that's why she works better with period stories, like Alborada and Pasión and her adaptations of Corazón Salvaje 1993 and Amor Real. The one novela I didn't care much from her was Sortilegio but eh, I didn't hate it. Most of her novelas are around 100 episodes long.

She tends to stick to work with one particular producer for a while. First Ernesto Alonso, then Carlos Sotomayor when he separated from Alonso and started doing his own novelas, then Carla Estrada when Sotomayor left Televisa and now she seems to be comfortable working with Rosy Ocampo (after a supposed fight with Estrada during Sortilegio).

All of Televisa's ratings are low right now. CI's ratings were odd and now Lartileux is planning to remake María la del Barrio and, unlike Marimar which I just enjoyed at the time it was on, I actually love that stupid novela and I always find it fun to watch. It makes me laugh harder than some comedies, that was its charm. I don't think Lartileux has it in her to produce something simmilar and her novelas lack in production values, continuity and editing; unlike María la del Barrio, which may have been a parody of the genre but was much better produced than anything Lartileux has created.

That's what puzzles me about CI's success, I can always enjoy stupid stories as long as they are fun, the production is okay and the characters are likeable. I don't think CI had either of these things. Maybe nostalgia played a part, I don't know.

Jarocha

Karen- Well, it seems that Uni made its decisions based on how these tns did on Televisa in Mexico. CI did well, so let the stupid thing run its LONG course. And obviously the American audience agreed. LT didn't do well in Mexico, so they chop it to bits here, even though it's not doing badly here. Thank goodness MPV is short, otherwise who knows what Uni would do to it.

CI is definitely an enigma. I've never seen a worse TN, and add that to the fact that it has and had high ratings, I'm befuddled.
Then there's this show that is clearly head and shoulders above the rest and the ratings are poor. But maybe part of that is the 10:00pm time slot. If this were at even 9:00pm, perhaps it would be doing better.

Jarocha:

Some things that I saw different way.

1, MPV has an undeniable quaility, but it was the one of the weakest link in recent years (after 2010) in 19 timeslot.
Look the promedios:
Mar da amor 17,1 Cuando me enamoro 18,9 LFDD 18,2 LQNPA 19,6 AB 18,0 QBA 18,1 MPV 16,5..... (the nice result is more than 18)
But in 2000-2010 period were weakers: Juro que te Amo 16,1, Verano de amor 13,8, Muchachitas como tu 10,7
It has bad audience in Mexico, but on Univision is horrible. I don't understand, more less than QBA. I'm afraid of shortening.

2, Pasion was a great fail in Mexico in prime time with 19,8, where the good is above 25. Worse rating than Pasion were in the case of Dos hogares 19,5 and La tempestad 19,3.

3, Natalie Lartilleux won't remake Maria la del Barrio, it will be La gata, and she will follow after Por siempre mi amor.

Alejo: I had forgotten Pasión's ratings. Yeah, that one did badly.

The 7 pm timeslot is hard to pull off because that's the hour where people get out of work here in Mexico so most arrive home in between 7:30-8:00 pm. Televisa is showing their novelas with a 15 minute delay to grab more audience but you can tell, in a year with at least medium success telenovelas in each timeslot, the jump in ratings from 7pm to 8pm novelas. I think 17 is a good enough number, MPV had low ratings in its first month which lowered its average but got better ones as time went on. That's why I don't consider it a failure, it built its audience.

Well, Lartileux will not remake María la del Barrio. That one would have been a new low in telenovela quality in her hands.

But, I'm sure La Gata will go badly with her as well. The last version, Por Un Beso with Natalia Esperón (Adriana in Amores Verdaderos), was only made in the year 2000 so it's odd that it's been remade so soon.

I guess we are moving on to remakes from the 00's.

Jarocha

Jarocha:

MPV mexican audiance: I also think it is too the fault of LPA. For LPA nobody was curious, that is the DEPTH. I hope - for you, in the USA - Univision won't buy this telenovela.

I don't know La Gata, I'm already now afriad from NL's fantasy.

Vivi in DC, thank you AS ALWAYS for your super bits of information. This is great of you to give the details and it helps in the overall learning process (at least for me. Really, really appreciated!

Cynderella, oh you betcha I have the same weird sense of humor. I try to keep in in check except for those times I am around people who know my style. I'm SURE you know what I mean. :))

Jarocha and Alejo P, a million thank yous for adding so much to our conversations! Thank you, thank you!!

Yep. We are having ourselves a 'nother good weekend discussion!

Fatima

I think it didn't do so well in Mexico because it is too hedonistic. Too much sex w/o consequence. Mexican values are not the same as American values.

Mexican tns have never been shy about sex. Our censors usually have to work overtime to cut the sex out. But Jarocha and Alejo are actual Mexicans who live in Mexico, so they might be the most qualified to make a judgement about that.

Vivi: you are so kind. :)

Sorry, sorry, sorry but i will laugh until dawn.
Am I a Mexican? Noooo....but I might also want to be a Mexican. :D I am a totally external observer, I am so-so far away (10240.93 km) from Mexico. I am writing from a small country, which called Hungary. :D AlejoP. is only my spanish translation of my name.
Here there are people too who loves telenovelas, and there are many on different channels.
But Central Europa is a different culture, and I see - you, americans - you rather like discussing telenovelas, while our forum isn't functioning well. :( So I speak a bit English, I decided I join to your blog/forum/website. And I don't like there are many pessimistic, negative commenters (naturally there are exceptions), but here are funny people with good sense of humour, that I missed until this time.

And sorry for my language errors, But I'm working on improvement.

Alejo- You have such a deep knowledge of these tns I thought you were in Mexico like our amiga Jarocha. Then it's up to Jarocha to let us know if too much sex sunk MPV in the ratings in Mexico.

Vivi, I spend one month each year in Mexico.

Reality- That's wonderful. Where do you usually go? Do you have discussions with your Mexican friends there about the tns they watch and why they choose certain ones over others? Jarocha has been such a fountain of knowledge for us here and I know we all appreciate her cultural perspective as we watch these tns.

AlejoP, your English is just super! We are so happy to have you here with us. :))

Fatima

Vivi:

There is a blogger, who pays attention for Televisa novels and he is the most reliable person on this area. He never writes false. He speaks fluently Spanish, and in normal case at least a week brings new infos in Hungarian language.

But the truth is truth, I will also a lot searching about novels in foreign sites, it's one of my hobbies. In my childhood I watched these stories with my granny, and I'm enchanted by this world. :)

For 3 years I watch Spanish language telenovelas more and more. Telenovela-language is not difficult, and now I'm watching two: Quiero amarte and LQLVMR. Oh, three: again MPV with you (and I know the rules: this is a spoiler-free zone) :D

Alejo- What a great resource. Telenovelas, especially those from Mexico, are watched all around the world. Although some countries, as I saw in East Africa, are also now making their own. Often with stories bought from Televisa. I hope Televisa starts paying attention to tn blogs outside of Mexico to learn how their international market feels about their products.

Vivi, Each year I pick a different spot. About 3 years ago I was given a tour of Tequila by a fellow who had watched first-hand various scenes of my all-time favorite -- Destilando Amor -- being filmed in and around Tequila, including the famous scene of the bus w/ Gaviota going down that dusty road. That TN was hugely popular. With the exception of Mexico City, Mexico remains conservative Catholic. That's been my experience anyway. Catholic is not the same as Puritan, BTW.

In Hungary this method hasn't exist yet, here are only Hungarian made soap operas and these have run for many years (8-15 years, and so boring). The new fashion is the Hungarian docurealities. I hate them, I rather follow Televisa and Telemundo. (But as I said, there are fresh novelas too.)

I know Africans like telenovelas. Maite such as a Queen, she was in Angola in these days. But is is a very valuable and interesting info for me: "African countries are also now making their own". I think it's a brilliant idea.

In Central Europe there was attempts. For example in Germany, they made the German Betty la fea (Verliebt in Berlin aka Love in Berlin)

And the turkish series have been very popular for some years in Europe. They spread quickly internationally, Pasion Prohibida is a remake of a turkish story.

Alejo- While in Egypt last year I saw a bit of the original Turkish PP, and also saw a bit of a Turkish remake of Televisa's Rubi. It's a two way exchange that seems to be working well.

Alejo, I must confess that I also thought you were from Mexico! That's amazing that you are also form Hungary, like our friend Aribeth and another friend I have from Hungary in DF, who's also a fan of telenovelas.

There are actually many people from Central Europe working for Televisa, my friend from Hungary worked there for a year in the marketing department.

As for MPV, I don't think the sex was an issue at all. I think the low ratings were due to a tired timeslot that had shifted its audience during QBA to one that was more used to traditional stories and was probably expecting something like that next. If MPV had followed Amor Bravío then I wonder if that would have worked out better.

I think Mexicans are less bothered by sex scenes than by promiscuous behavior. That is, if the lead had sex with several people and the show did not show it, people would be more upset than if the lead had only sex with the main love interest and they had many strong sex scenes on screen (eg. Sortilegio).

But even then, women who enjoy to sleep around can be well liked characters like Raquel here, or even extremely popular like Paulina in Mirada de Mujer. They just aren't accepted as leads yet.

Even in Teresa, where the main character was also a villanous one, she only had sex with men she loved.

Jarocha

And you know what? Even that a woman who has several (more than 2) partners during the course of the story wouldn't be accepted by the audience in Mexico is just pure speculation. No novela has actually tried that yet.

Absolutely wonderful discussion today, gang! Keep the super comments coming!

What a great place to be. :)

Fatima

Fatima: Thanks! :) I am happy, too. :)

Jarocha:

Interesting things, what you say, I am taking notes. :)

And I "know" Aribeth, sometimes we communicated in comments on the newsblog and on the Hungarian TN forum. Just there I have an another name.
And I somtimes read her recaps of AV, but this novela wasn't my favourite, I can't stand bodyguards, I don't know why. This is a oddity of me. :D

So surprising Central Europeans by the Televisa, I can't imagine till you wrote.
[Yuck, I hate marketing, but I must learn (I am a (university) student)]

A question that excite me: What do you think about the following? Know that Felipe Nejara (our hundred-named Padre) is gay in real life. Is this factor - a gay man for priest - plays a role in the lower ratings?

AlejoP, I'm sure Jarocha will have more of an "inside" answer, but I would say "no", sexual preference (hmm...is that the phrase I want?)of the lead actors does not impact ratings (from what I, in my limited experience, can see).

Making a general comment here and not naming any one specific individual, but there are some pretty famous and well loved male actors who seem to make the entertainment "news" with regard to your specific question, yet, they have been leads in very popular TNs.

I don't believe I've broken any blog rules with the above comment, but, Vivi in DC let me know if I have, OK and I will remove my comment.

Fatima

I wasn't aware that this actor was gay, but it makes no difference to me, but I'm not Televisa's target audience either. I doubt it would matter in the US, but Mexico may be different.

Alejo:

No, there was no issue with Felipe Nájera's sexuality. At least not that I'm aware of. Even doing a quick search on google now to be sure all I could find was one short thread at the Univision forums where nobody seemed to care that much.

I didn't know about the Central (and Eastern) Europeans working at televisa but my friend told me. It's really hard to stay working there if you don't know certain people but getting a short contract is possible and they help each other alot.

I worked at a Center for European Studies at the university where I was doing my master's degree and we had a program for undergrads who came for a semester from Central and Eastern Europe. That's where I became aware of the community in Mexico City, it is small but since they are mostly in DF they do meet and help each other. Two of the girls then, precisely from Hungary, decided to stay in Mexico but they had to go back to finnish school and my friend sort of took them under her wing and showed them how life was here for her as an immigrant, the good, the bad, the difficulties with the paperwork, etc. This was because she also stayed here after planning to come only for a semester during her master but she was older than them, these girls were 19, they left with the idea of coming back but who knows. I do know of one girl who came back last year but she was from Serbia. And there was also a young administrative at the high school area from Czech Republic, same story, she came to study for a semester and ended up staying.

Funny thing, all those staying were women. At least, the ones I got to meet.

Thanks all your answers for my question and dispel my doubts!. :)

Okay, folks! It's finally soup now! Forgive any typos, but I'm bushed!

Jarocha, nice to see you here again!

Jardinera - Great title and recap. Love part 1 and looking forward to part 2. I especially appreciate the details on this one cause I couldn't keep up with all the play-counterplay.

Berto is an interesting character. He seems to have had a tyrant for a father and now has a lazy sister who lets him do all the dirty work. Could his lack of bathing signify self-loathing? Why hasn't he hit on Raquel, or Piero? I could feel sorry for him if he weren't such a sleazebag.

Love all the contributions about Televisa & novelas.

So glad Jarocha is with us.

Most all the TN's run too long, I find myself losing interest, unless it is Amor Real. Buuut, thankfully they don't last as long as the US soaps.
72 years for Guiding Light. General Hospital started in 1963 & is still on. They are/were a daytime audience though.

Hard to understand why the popularity of novelas is so different between Mex & US audiences. Probably the US audience is older. Not sure Televisa recognizes that. Probably it is better they are cutting LT short. It's Mejia & can only disintegrate quickly.

I agree about the kissing, way too much in public. DZ sure isn't the kisser FC is or WL. They must go through a lot of Chapstick. Hugging, holding, touching would be much more realistic, especially since these lovers are not that young.

Waaa! My entire comment just disappeared in a puff of green smoke!

Jardinera, thank you for another excellent, super dooper weekend recap! It is ALWAYS worth the wait! :))

Every time I see Berto's greasy head, I'd like to grab him by the hair and submerge his head in a basin full of HOT, soapy water. He just looks slimier by the day.

Niecie in MD, I agree. I think there is definitely some self loathing going on here. He and his sister are both losers with a capital "L". They are lazy good for nothings who are never willing to work, but live off of the hard work of others.

Berto has a heck of a lot of nerve blackmailing Ricky into letting him back into the office. The blackmailing comes waaay too easy for Berto. He is nothing more than a lying, lazy, lounge lizard and I still think he had something to do with Gabe's death.

Ricky might think he has Berto where he wants him right now, but he needs to keep his eye on Berto and not get so distracted by Little Ricky. Distractions like that can mean big trouble down the road.

As for Jose Luis, looks like he's a smoldering volcano doing the proverbial slow burn. When he finally erupts, where is that ash going to fall?

Fatima

Brilliant Jardinera. I love all the detail. So many great developments this episode that will make things even more complicated. Love it. What will JL's next move be?

Jar- Could you do a page break on this recap? It's pushed the Telemundo post off the page, and I know many will have a hard time finding it today.

Thanks Jardinera, I couldn't stand Oriana's dress either, but I keep wondering how she can stand to be in a dress and heels all the time when there is so much happening. Why was she in a dress and heels when she dropped off the money? For some reason that really bugs me, lol.

What will be JL's next move be? He already said he couldn't make the grand opening, but I'm sure he will watch. I think his next move will be to talk to Oriana alone.

Sorry I forgot to erase the "part 1" stuff. It's all there and there were only 3-4 paragraphs that followed.
===========
ViviDC: Oops! Sorry! Sometimes I just forget the break.
========
Fatima: Love the volcano reference about JL.

DO's expression of combined hurt, shock and jealousy was right on the mark! For a villano I certainly felt his pain and could relate. He is really suffering with the loss of his beautiful wife and daughter and the happy life he led in Columbia--and all for having taken such advantage of her and then leaving her to the wolves, so to speak, legally.

Great recap Jardinera!

You especially captured José Luis's emotions after seeing his wife move on with her life without him. He shouldn't have been so reckless when he put his wife and daughter at risk by getting involved in that organization and then using Oriana's name for ilegal porposes.

Awesome recap Jardenera, thanks.
JL is one of those men who think women don't always mean what they say. 2nes did say he was dead to her. He can freak out all he wants about her kissing another guy,but he is dead to her.sorry. Ric is desperate to save 2nes, but from whom? The kidnapper or her ex? CI was great at the beginning. It should have ended 20 episodes ago. MPV is fast moving and connects the dots, plus it is a short one. sweet....

Hanna

Lol, that was me, Jarocha at 4:11 pm.

Sorry, I'm writing from my phone and the autocorrect had been ruining my post and turning every word into Spanish so I got annoyed and didn't sign.

Wow, great recap.
Guess I slept through more than I thought. After the Blackmail scene, I have decided DZ is a much better villain than lover.

Berto reminds me of a Fish Called Wanda with Kevin Kline sniffing the armpits.

What is the deal with JL burning his finger with the lighter? What did that finger do?

Jardinera, thank you for the compliment. Really appreciated coming from such a master of words! :))

Fatima

Fatima: don't sell yourself short, amiga!

I think JL is trying to alter his finger prints. Somebody should tell him that doesn't really work. Raquel makes me sick. Has she heard of yeast infection? she is suffering from one. Sex with strangers is not the answer, She better get a checkup. And a good douche!! I recommend the vinegar and water.

Hanna

JL might be simply a pyromaniac.

Hanna: vinegar y water, hahahahaha! And I suggest a root bush for Raqi, too.

And the recap was hilarious, this is exactly what I expected. :)

Gracias, Jardinera! I just got done watching and reading. I laughed at your observation about knife-wielding Matilde! She does love to wave that thing around, doesn't she?!
