PEAM #181.2- 11/20/13: We All Should Obey When Love Commands. The End!
RECAP BY PABLO
Labels: Manda
This last recap of yours is fabulous, without a doubt. Thanks so much for doing this Grand Finale with your trademark snark. It was well worth the wait.
They really did leave us hanging with certain things, like no one got Vero's body? What happened when she "disappeared"? Did Delia and Suarez even look for her?
I was disappointed that Pancho y Familia weren't in the Gran Finale. I really was hoping they would be.
Alma's dress was gorgeous. That train really was a mile long, but still gorgeous dress.
I actually laughed at Chucho's oily body. They kept the camera there for a while too. It was our one last look at FC.
Thanks so very much for this last recap Pablo and see you in the comments.
I don't know if you added stuff in with an artistic license or what.
But were scenes cut out of our West Coast airing?
PABLO, Thank you for seeing us through. I'm curious what's next for you?
I can't stop laughing over Chatita who had the matchsticks in her bra.
It was poetic justice for Veronica to spend her life scrubbing toilets
Why was Quico at the Alma's house? A very annoying character and I was not pleased that Valentina had to run to him amd wrap her little legs around him. Really?
Alma's gown was beautiful minus the train. The train was a bit much.
Sadly, I yawned during the love scene. They truly were a boring couple.
What a bittersweet moment because I was honored to recap with such a great team but I am glad that the show is over.
I thought this was one of the worst finales I've seen. More than usual plot points left hanging ( I really thought we would get a fast forward with the babies, a Mari wedding, maybe Rog out of jail, etc.)
Speaking of Rog, ok, tear our hearts out with that farewell scene between he and Pati. Cripes. Actually, to me, their story was far more interesting than our leads ( and better acted).
I'm not big on grand weddings, and though I thought Alma's dress was pretty from the front, that train was just too much. And speaking of too much, what was with the raccoon eyes and yes, Pablo, right there with you on the hair. And I know FC hates to dance, but could it have killed him to do one scene dancing with his bride...just stand still and sway for goodness shake.
Of course staying consistent, the whole treatment of Val in this episode was awful. She goes thru the trauma of seeing her mother hurt and scarred, dragged off to jail, has to be the one to forgive her and then plopped at the wedding table with no one but that annoying "boyfriend" to be there for her. I know, I know...supposed to just show the happy couple and all their sweet nothings with people, but I was still ticked off.
Hated the "to the camera" end and I never thought Chucho and Alma have ever lit up the screen with chemistry, so I clicked off when they went to the bedroom and waited for Rulli and Boyer who just looking at each other makes my TV shake.
Been fun everyone. See you on the other shows.
Daisynjay
Will be back later Pablo. But many thanks for suffering through this with us and making us laugh (and teaching us some useful Spanish as well!)
They cut out the piichon/pichona chicken dance bit and Fernando in his Charro attire here in the midwest. I just reviewed my tape to make sure I hadn't missed those scenes. Since we had scenes of Rogelio and Paty planning something, it was good to know what is was. Well, the episode seemed heavy on commercials so all we can say is "el dinero manda" for sure. :)
All in all a satisfying end to PEAM for me. The only thing that bothered me was the continued terrorization of Valentina by her mother. That was the real downer of the episode because Valentina was left in a very dark place.
Thanks to all of the recappers and commenters because I never would have continued watching without this group. You guys made it fun and worthwhile.
Jarifa
The experience was great and made Thursday my favorite day. You're right, recapping is not just tell what you saw, but sharing points of view and having something to talk about with people you have something in common.
I love to be entertained as much as you, so I am sure that one day I will find something amusing we all can talk about. Thanks again!
My next experiment will be recapping a TN that I like, to see if I can get the same raunchy wit I used here.
I meant thursdays were more fun to me than the actual recapping day (in my case, wednesday), because, believe or not, if you think the recaps are funny, the comments are even more!
In the mid-Atlantic we did not get the chicken dance or Fer in his charro suit, more's the pity, but we did get Vale's totally inappropriate thigh-hug of the Lounge Lizardlet and the Hyena dunking Vero's head in the toilet. Very weird.
Sad not to see Pancho, but most of the old gang seems to be turning up on ROBO, so adelante!

Sorry I couldn't find the chicken dance with Patrog, but here it is the happy chicken with Quico:

After Veronica's attempt at killing her, Valentina should have been screaming and running from her. I also wonder whether Veronica surviving that fall was realistic. She should have died, which would have been better for all the survivors of her reign of terror. The writers had her survive so we could laugh at her fate of being dunked into a dirty toilet in her last scene.
Unlike many, I do not believe that forgiveness is always appropriate. Veronica was a dangerous lunatic who caused so much damage and killed several people I am with our hero who said "Only God can forgive you."
I hated Alma's hair at the end; they could have thought of something better. Also thought the train on her dress was excessive and would have looked better if the dress had a bustle instead of a hoopskirt.
Most disturbing editing cut on the episode, at least here in New Mexico, was the scene of Veronica drinking from the porcelain chalice that cut to the bacon wrapped asparagus, cake and most of all red wine right after. NOT appetizing at all...
I love your newly coined term Caraythians, it has a majestic ring to it!!
Mil gracias, querido amigo, Pablo, ojala que nos veamos pronto.
I laughed when you mentioned the fourth wall. I HATE when they talk to the camera! I also loved "He reads Pablos's recap for the Caraythians in the Laptop." But most of all, I loved "this is some consolation prize I would never accept."
The bed scene was record-breakingly short. And the oil on FC was ridiculous. Wessonality! He looked like he had just come out of a fryer and the cook forgot to drain the basket! Gross!
Fernando singing wasn't shown on the east coast either, sadly. Nor was the chicken dance. Cutting out the chicken dance was especially obnoxious because it made their previous scene together a bit confusing. I thought they were either planning to flee, or find some privacy for a quickie, but then nothing happened...
Bill, I was horrified by Vero's prison scene too. Actually I was horrified by the whole Vero thing. All the questions Madelaine brought up, for one thing. And first she's carrying a knife around and then she's begging for forgiveness? Whaaaaat? And then getting groped by Hiena and a dunk in a toilet full of Yoo-Hoo. Yeah, we get it.
But take heart; when she told Hiena "you don't know who you're messing with," I realized that she probably won't live very long in prison and THEN everyone's suffering can end.
Finally, who were those two rude girls in church? Who the hell would yell "Asco!" at a (supposed) nun??
I would have liked one of those "five years later" epis so we could see Pato & Rogelio happy again -- and a look at Fernando & Xochitl's 5 niños. Plus who knows how many more babies for Alma & Chucho after that fertility dance.
AND I kept waiting for Pancho Lopez to show up with his family --NADA. ¿Qué, Qué, What? Why did they throw that teaser in about the whole family coming fro Toluca if there was no intention of them really coming? Or did I miss something?
Güera
I can't believe no one mentioned the RED BUCKET bucket in the prison scene! How can the Only Bucket in Monterrey end up in a prison lavatory? It deserved better!
My last comment before lunch (but not my last comment of the day): didn't it look as though Alma was wearing every item in the Avon product line at the same time??
I am sorry I overlooked the red bucket in female prison, I must have been using my magnifying glass on Veronica's teeth... Let me go rewind, LOL!!
In my TN watching experience and, to be honest, it’s very limited, this is the worst gran final I’ve seen.
I thought all the good guys were supposed to have happy endings. That last scene with Pato was gut-wrenching. I get that Rog has to go back to jail, and Pato’s response was consistent, but for the GF couldn’t they have had her keep a stiff upper lip and hope for an early release.
That scene where Vale was practically wetting her pants when Quico showed up and then JUMPED ON HIM. I was sick to my stomach.
Who was that guy with Marcia?!
If Vero had escaped, why wasn’t everyone nervous at the wedding thinking she might show up?
What happened to Vero in prison--her worst nightmare.
I liked the wedding dress and didn’t mind the hair. Thought the tiara was appropriate—the train, not so much. The makeup was too dark. I liked her dress/look at her wedding with Rog way better.
I would like to have seen a time jump, too.
At least they got to fit in the obligatory close up of FC’s wet (oily?) chest before the end.
Question: What was Marisela’s dipoloma for?
Nanette
Plastic is indeed a good investment. Lasts a lifetime!
Thanks for pointing that out because now I also saw the toilet brush ''verde limón''
I wish they hadn't cut out those dance scenes> It would have gone a long way toward saving this boring finale. I agree that leaving out the pichon dance was particularly unfortunate because it left me scratching my head about what Pato & Rog were plotting. I also would have loved to hear Fernando sing again. I am not sorry to have missed another Quico travesty.
Also agree about that unfortunate edit from filthy toilet to wedding food. And, much as Vero deserved humiliation that toilet scene was too much (for us more than for her.)
And yes that oiled up chest was a but too much. They could have used a few shower scenes throughout the show -- FC DOES have an impressive chest which I wouldn't mind glimpsing now and agai -- but last night I just kept wondering if he was going to slide off the bed -- Was Alma going to be able to hold on or would he slip right out of her encircling arms. And did I see glitter on those oily hairs???
But Juarever -- Thanks again to you, Pablo. You've kept us laughing all through this.
Güera
I am guessing Marisela now with that degree, will join the ''Licenciados'' gremio and if not rich and famous, at least will leave the bottom of the barrel and start doing like The Jeffersons, moving up!
I switched the channel as soon as Quico showed up. I pride myself on not having watched any of his scenes all the way through. So I did not see Val wrap herself around him. Thank goodness!
I had all of the same questions the rest of you did. In addition:
- Do they really expect us to believe that GIANT wedding dress fit in that little box they brought Alma?
- Why did they need pizza, on top of all the food that was already cooked? And why did they need such a giant feast at all, when a few hours later they would be at a wedding banquet?
- Why bother showing us the cool park the reception would be in a few episodes back, when they were just going to show the inside which just looked like a soundstage anyway?
- Why the heck did they make Xoci and Fer pregnant with 5 kids, if they were never going to show us those 5 kids? Why couldn't she just be pregnant with one or two? The whining would have been the same.
I could go on, and on. :)
This tn didn't start off bad, but the last few weeks (since Elias left) I really feel like it got dull, dumb, and dreary.
Nanette, in 7 years of TN watching (holy crap, really? has it been 7 already?), this was the worst GF I have ever seen, in terms of poor editing, loose ends, overuse of salad oil, and general incoherence. And that includes at least two Mejia TNs. It may be some time before you see another one this disappointing.
Also about the editing: I don't think I saw the scene where they explained why the entire Lopez family, including the dog, missed the wedding. Did they really say Pancho was playing golf? Does it matter? I seriously want to sue them for false advertising. I tuned in to see Popeye!
Regarding Paty's sadness, I think it is supposed to be her punishment for years of taking things that don't belong to her (if getting stabbed wasn't enough). I don't know if it's worthwhile to try to make sense of it, but when you consider that she could have gone to jail (and been Vero's cellmate, asco!), her fate isn't unreasonable.
I don't ever want to see Quico again. If I avoid Juan Osorio's stuff I probably won't have to. On top of being intrinsically annoying, he's a terrible actor. And add me to the list of people who were taken aback by Vale's leggy embrace. Guacala, asco.
Speaking of Vale: one of the "rules" of TNs, which I have never seen violated until now, is that if you diss your mother, you die. At least in the Televisa world. "You're a mean mommy and I don't love you" is a pretty substantial diss (even if COMPLETELY justified). So I don't know if this counts as breaking a cardinal TN rule, or if Vale gets a free pass because she's a kid. Either way, though, I TOTALLY AGREE with Valentina and I'm glad she didn't perish in a fiery wreck.
Julie, I hope you're right that one can avoid Quico by avoiding Osorio. I intend to do so. Guacala indeed.
Julie: Good to know that this is a one off re: gran final. I understand where you’re coming from with Pato. Makes sense. But since both she and Rog had turned their lives around, I would have liked a less heartbreaking end scene for Pato, if for no other reason than it was a little jarring in an otherwise happy TN ending.
Looking forward to seeing Maria Elisa as the lead in her next novela.
Quico was embarrassing. His scenes were excruciating--both the ones where he's coming on to Vale and when he's performing. I feel kind of sorry for the kid. He showed the world how not so talented he is. Maybe he'll improve.
BTW, that's totally made up, because I lived in México and attended many weddings and funerals and never saw uniformed people passing the baskets around. Juárever...
But at least we finally got some comedy in the show! That whole honeymoon suite scene cracked me up. Especially their attempts at intense romantic facial expressions, and that goofy pan of Chucho dripping oil. I would have preferred a time jump to everyone else's happily ever after, though.
The other thing that made me laugh was the girl yelling "¡Asco!" in the church, right before Chucho and Alma kissed. Only one other person saw Vero's face, so probably everyone else thought this heckler in the back was grossed out by the prospect of kissing or something.
I didn't like Alma's dress. Too Gone With the Wind for my taste. And the train was ridiculous. Not merely cathedral length, but royalty length? Rather pretentious, no?
The reception was more fun than I expected, but barely. I'm surprised stuffy Chucho agreed to a band and dancing (for others, not for him). I was afraid their idea of a good reception would be two hours of tedious speeches and toasts. HATED their talking to the camera. I watch television for entertainment, not for a boring lecture.
Vero's swirly in the filthy toilet made me gag. I really nearly vomited. I couldn't watch the rest of the scene.
I loved the Chinese lanterns, although of course I always worry about fire danger when people do those. They look so beautiful.
I agree with Vivi about the preggers thingy with Xochi. Why have her preggers if they weren't going to have a time jump?
Did anyone notice Kiko's red face when he was singing to Chucho? He looked beet red.
They left us hanging about who was Marisela's Mama and Panfi's first wife.
Elias couldn't make it back throughout all this Killeronica drama? FC and he didn't have to be in the same scenes. Really!
I too didn't like that Pato and Rog got no happy ending. They had both reformed so much, I think they should have done a time jump where they showed everyone all happy with their lives.
I too thought that scene with Killeronica was excessive, and like Julia, I had to look away. Didn't that Hyena mention something about messing with Alma?
Chucho's oily chest was a bit much. I too would have preferred a shower scene. And he was dripping, I liked Julie's comment about the Wesson Oil, I am still laughing.
I too agree this is the worst finale I have ever seen. The best one so far I have seen was PESE's finale and Refugio's finale. I loved the Eva lecture at the end of PESE, and the villains getting their just desserts in Refugio. Both had happy endings without all the oil and chopped scenes.
If you watch Hoy's episode today be prepared for an FC love fest.
That said, I will miss looking at megahotties Blanca and Maria Elisa, and Valentina might just be the cutest kid in TN history (until someone finds a role for Montserrat "Telesa" from Pequenos Gigantes). And of course, these fantastic recaps will be tough to top (at least until the next big TN). Now off to write my anti-novela, with a gay super-couple, bloodshed everywhere, and a finale featuring a Jewish or even (horrors!) non-religious wedding.
As for the big wedding....I agree about the too long train , the racoon eyes , the big hairpouf , and the staged love scene devoid of passion and emotion. FC has a beautiful body, but there was no chemistry between these two leads.
I saw FC on the Cristina show after Alborada, and he refused to dance even though Lucero and Daniela Roma were dancing and begging him to join them? I won't dancer don't ask me.
Does anyone know if FC has signed on for his next novela ? Please let it not be a comedy...this one sure wasn't one.
Mads, I think Hiena's remark was something like Vero would have to pay twice as much as Alma did to get out of being Hiena's slave.
And after falling down that cliff and obviously breaking her face and a few other bones (notice her floppy ankle) she was healed enough THE VERY NEXT DAY to steal a nun's habit and show up at the wedding with a BLACK (already healing) bruised face?
Alrighty, then.
She was Veronator, and just got up after the fall and was ready to strike again!! She had some paracetamol and Goicoechea leg cream in her ''pierce''.
The rumor mill is better than any advertisement and it's free.
"Overuse of salad oil." you guys kill me.
Gossip isn't allowed, Madelaine?
I agree with you all about missing Elias. I wasn't here for the discussion when he left, but it seemed to me that when he and Jesus were shown together with Valentina that they made a more believable and affectionate family. My two dads. Must have been too confusing so they banished him.
My sincerest thanks to all the PEAM recappers. When this telenovela started spiraling out of control I knew I could at least count on the recaps to maintain a high standard. So we had to watch the world's most boring couple...a small price to pay for the scintillating recaps.
Even my hubby thought Alma & Jesus were the most boring couple ever. That last scene was just awful. Why is a greasy body considered sexy? And white lingerie? Definitely not sexy either. I loved your line about Alma's eyelashes. She looked like the entire Avon line exploded on her face. Alma looked much, much prettier for her wedding to Rogelio.
So how many storylines were just left hanging? Did Maricela's mother ever make an appearance? We never did learn the big secret about Xochi's father either. And no word on Disqua. Did she get a miracle cure for her cancer or did she die in Bangladesh? No word on Elias. Marcia's sister is murdered by Veronica and Marcia says "I have nothing to forgive you for"? Really? What about Cinthia's husband Astudillo? And Chatita's theory about why her son and husband died, so she could meet Jesus, is a direct rip off from "Dances with Wolves".
The one thing that really irked me was Quico. Note to producers: Unless the kid is *really* talented, PLEASE don't subject the TN audience to your own spawn's "performance". I cringed every time "Quico" was on the screen. There is nothing more torturous than watching the child of some fawning parent stumble through Chopsticks on the piano or sing off-key.
To be fair, though, I see a lot of older immigrant men doing those kind of jobs ( I know one who delivers pizzas myself, in a pickup-up not on a bike ) where I live but I know what you guys mean.
By the way, Is this where we can have a Festivus style "Airing of the Grievances" about the show?
- About the whole Elias situation, there goes my idea for a telenovela version of "Starsky & Hutch" starring Colunga & Aravena.
- It had potential at the beginning and seemed to get better for a while but then they turned it into a "kitchen sink" telenovela and tried to stuff it with everything: comedy, tragedy, murder, awkward not-love scenes, slapstick, unresolved story lines, etc.
- I think Chucho would've been more satisfying character if things didn't come so easy for him. It would've made for a better story and a more satisfying plot.
- I think Colunga can be a better comedic actor ( there were glimpses of it imho ) but he really needs to learn to let go as an actor.
Mads: I'm looking forward to seeing FC and BS in their play in a few weeks.
"Ooh! Over there! Shiny!"
There were also times when I thought I might someday be able to take Blanca seriously as an actress.
But most of the time, it seemed like he was trying too hard and she was barely trying at all - especially towards the end.
Bummer.
I listen on Hoy for tidbits of chisme and that is where I heard it the first time. But I agree with you. A lot of that is hype either for the TN they are in or a play they are doing. It always helps to hype that a bit.
Bill:
Yeah, we aren't supposed to gossip about the personal lives of the actors. It was just a tidbit I heard and thought I'd put it out there ; )
Nanette, a while back someone on another thread said they thought FC was trying to be like Cary Grant in "Charade" and I thought that was a perceptive comment. I think FC *could* be Cary Grant-ish in the right vehicle but as you said this comedy was probably to broad for him.
As for Blanca Soto, I'm always making excuses for her in my head. I think my judgement is clouded by all the pretty.
Cary Grant also had great comedic timing, and I'm not sure if FC has that. I just didn't see it in this tn, but it might be just the writing. Despite how poor the writing became, there were still a few actors that were able to make us laugh on a regular basis—e.g. Pati and Rogue. The reason is that both actors have great comedic timing and they were fearless- they were not afraid to look foolish and threw themselves all in. FC and BS always looked like they were holding back.
Any thoughts on this?
I am going to look for the nearest church and try to stop a wedding with a dull knife!
Na! I am not even allowed to use fireworks in my area!
After the ''100 things I learn from watching PEAM'' and the ''100 loose ends in PEAM'' this could be something we could do to celebrate that the nightmare is over.
I have my own plans, but if I like someone else's idea, I will steal it shamelessly! And don't you dare stop me!
I'm gonna drink chocolate milk out of the toilet!
I'm going to heckle bruised nuns!
TG it's over, sooooooo looooong. All novelas s/b no longer than 100 episodes unless it is sth VERY good.
So lucky, now CI is on for 2 hrs. Well at least the pain will end sooner.
Julie,
I laughed at your whole comment.
Then I'm going to get all romantical with a guy who has no money management skills or common sense or restaurant manners and a history of treating me and everyone else he knows very badly!
Also I am going to start wearing skimpy cocktail dresses to work everyday, like upper management!
Rompope ice cream bar could be enother option...
Jarifa
Maybe PEAM was a dud, but it probably gave us the best TN-to-comment humor ratio in Caray history.
Which reminds me: I'm going to get a job as hatcheck girl, steal things out of people's pockets, leave before my shift is over, and totally get away with it. And I'll be glistening with canola oil when I do it, because sometimes I get a little bit confused.
Jarifa
Mads, I'll raise my rompope glass (which will be full of tomato juice or tea because that's all I have left in the house today) only AFTER I watch the rebroadcast of the final, which begins at 2pm. I wanna see if they include any of the footage that was missing during the week. I felt as though some bits might have been missing on Tuesday night, too.
Most likely I will be disappointed and wish I'd spent those two hours watching something else, but afterwards it will FINALLY be all over!!
The first "hour" was shorter than it was on Tuesday night, though. Dunno if they cut stuff out of that to make room for the extra stuff in the second hour, or if there were just fewer commercials.
I didn't have time to go to the store, even for eggnog, so I just had some iced coffee. Anyway, NOW it is done!
Jarifa
Julia, I appreciate your attention to detail in finding something to like about this finale, Pati's necklace.
The recaps and the comments have been delightful. The show itself was a roller coaster, but helped me learn spanish.
A little observation that I kept meaning to make and always forgot--loved the way Rog put a pocket hanky in his prison jumpsuit pocket.
Honestly, I don't understand why Uni cut those scenes. They were steamy, but I've seen comparable scenes on daytime TV.
