Lo Que La Vida Me Robo 22 - 11/19/2013 - Reveals, Obsessions, Arguments and Confessions
High Stakes Game At
the Dinner Table
Outside the dining room the woman looks up at the man, smug,
self-satisfied. She is somewhat older than the handsome man to whom she speaks,
but she tosses her head and beam at him with a look that is a parody of the
coquette she may once have been. She is more practiced than he at the social
dance that conceals fear and hatred.
He, Alejandro Almonte, is less urbane, less polished than the
woman. Still—he understands she is playing a game; a game she intends to win.
She is his mother-in-law, Graciela, but there is no love lost between these
two. That much is clear.
Graciela –“ If you tell anyone my secret you will be
responsible for killing the Admiral. Consider well, you have more to lose than
I do.”
Alejandro – “What game are you playing at? I am not going to
kill your husband.”
Graciela – “If you tell my husband this news, he will have a
heart attack. It will be your fault. Your fault. She punctuates each word with
her index finger. “You will be responsible for his death
and my daughter Montserrat will hate you even more than she does now.”
The son-in-law, Alejandro, seems almost incredulous at the
woman’s audacity. His face is still as she takes his arm and cozily leads him
into the dining room. They sit down with
the waiting others: the stunning young bride Montserrat, her Aunt Carlota and
Graciela’s husband, Admiral Lauro Mendoza.
The dinner conversation wanders down familiar paths; the
delicious meal prepared by Tia Carlota, and the Admiral’s fond hope that the
newlyweds will soon give him a grandchild. Alejandro covers his wife’s hand
with his own as he assures the family that there is nothing he would like more
than to make a family with his wife, Montserrat.
But now the conversation takes a different turn, set up by
an innocent question from the kindly Aunt. Why, she asks, did Alejandro’s
father never marry?
Alejandro looks steadily down the long dining table,
catching his mother-in-law’s eyes and holding them with his own.
Alejandro – “In fact my father had a relationship for many
years with a woman. A bad woman. But it was impossible for them to marry,
because she was already married. She stayed with my father for a long time with
the only motivation that she would receive all of his money when he died.”
By the time Tia Carlota opines that it is hard to believe in
the immorality of such a woman, Graciela abruptly stands up. She has suddenly been taken ill and must leave
the table. She asks Montserrat to join her as she leaves the room. Alejandro
then follows them out. The Admiral notes to Tia Carlota that her questions made
Alejandro seem very uncomfortable.
A Matter Of Great
Delicacy
Outside, in the Mendoza’s beautiful garden, Graciela admits
to Montserrat and Alejandro that she must speak to them on a matter of great
delicacy.
Graciela starts the conversation by telling Montserrat that
she is being very unjust to her husband. Montserrat shoots back that Alejandro
and her mother have gone, once again, behind her back.
Alejandro’s face is stern as he looks at his mother in law.
“Your mother knows more about the death of Bruno Gamboa than either you or me,”
he says.
Sra Graciela Mendoza now spins out a sanitized backstory to
Montserrat. It seems that through a mistake of brother Dimitrio’s, the bad man
Bruno Gamboa had obtained the deed to the Mendoza house AND a promissory note
with the false signature of Lauro Mendoza. This was not a good situation.
Naturally Sra Mendoza had to get these documents back from
Bruno Gamboa. She enlisted the help of her beloved son, and they went to visit
Gamboa. They asked Gamboa nicely to give them the deed. He refused. Sra Mendoza and Dimitrio left Gamboa’s, but
Dimitrio went back into Bruno’s house for a final try at getting the documents.
Alas, Bruno Gamboa had armed himself with a pistol, there was a struggle, and
the pistol went off. It was an accident. Bruno Gamboa was dead.
The young woman Montserrat looks stunned as she hears this
story. “Dimitrio—my brother—killed Bruno Gamboa?” she gasps. “No! It was an
accident!” snaps her mother. “It just happened that Jose Luis Alvarez came by
at this time, and…”
The older woman, Graciela, looks dangerous and very agitated,
a bit like a hyena cornered in her den. Still, she is economical with the
truth. “We did NOT frame Jose Luis for the murder.” Montserrat again looks
stunned at her mother’s words.
Alejandro now attacks his suegra. “No, you let an innocent
man be named a criminal and jailed for a crime you knew he did not commit. You
turned him into a fugitive!” The handsome man is clearly outraged.
Graciela counter attacks. Jose Luis Alvarez is a very
dangerous man. He killed a navy lieutenant in order to escape captivity. She
immediately moves into a manipulative stance. “Please, do not hurt Dimitrio!
Please leave things as they are. Your brother has changed,” she pleads to
Montserrat.” He is a businessman, now, and is helping your father with
expenses.”
Montserrat is held hostage by her profound attachment to her
father and her fear for his health, and perhaps his safety. But Montserrat
grasps the core of her mother’s message. “All of this was done to protect my
brother,” she chokes out.
The mother-in-law has now regained her ironclad poise, as
she pulls the protective cloak of motherhood around her shoulders. “Look
Montserrat,” the woman hisses. Everything I have done was for my children.
Someday, when you are a mother, you will understand.” Her words hang heavily in
the air, like a prophecy. She turns on her high heels and returns to the house.
Alejandro Almonte meets his wife’s shocked eyes. Montserrat
was surprised that he would speak in such a manner to her mother. The handsome
man’s face tries to convey that he is not Graciela’s Mendoza’s accomplice in
all things. He acknowledges an injustice and a hard truth. “What your mother
and brother did to Jose Luis was wrong. But if he were alive and tried to take
you from me, I do not know what I would do.”
A Business
Proposition and a Near Confession
Another beautiful young woman and her older husband come to
visit the Mendoza house. Admiral Mendoza welcomes Pedro Medina and his wife,
Nadia, into the family home. But it seems that Medina has an agenda, Nadia
heads out to the garden to see her old friend, Montserrat, and Pedro wants to
have a word with Alejandro Almonte. After a brief and barely polite inquiry
into Almonte’s newly married state Medina gets to the point. He still wants to
buy some land that Almonte owns. He has already offered double the going price
for these lands. The offer stands.
Nadia finds Montse in the garden, agitated and crying. Montserrat tells Nadia that she is very upset,
confused and doubtful. She needs to talk to someone. She wants some peace.
But in the house, Almonte once again turns down Pedro
Medina’s offer to buy his uncultivated lands. The land is not for sale, he says,
and he notes that it seems interesting that Medina is willing to pay twice the
going rate for them. Medina is very unhappy about his development and leaves
Almonte abruptly to gather his wife and go home.
Before Montserrat can tell Nadia anything meaningful, Pedro
Media rudely grabs his wife’s arm and escorts her off the Mendoza property.
Later, when Nadia protests to Pedro about his rude treatment of her and
complains of what the Mendoza’s and Almontes must think of them, he ignores her
and calls in his henchman, Loreto. When Nadia has left, Pedro Medina berates
Loreto that earlier he failed to get any useful information for use as leverage
against Alejandro Almonte. Medina needs that land and, ominously, he orders
Loreto to take care of Almonte. “Clear him out,” says Medina.
Two Are Stalking For ‘Love’
Deep in the countryside, at the Almonte Hacienda, Maria Zamudio
sinks deeper into her obsession with her childhood friend and employer,
Alejandro Almonte. Now that she lives in the big house, with Almonte and his
new bride, she is finding it easier to indulge her delusions. She cannot seem
to help herself as she sneaks into Montserrat’s room. She rifles Montserrat’s drawers
and finally steals some of Montse’s trousseau, a set of black panties and a bra.
Outside the Hacienda, Alejandro Almonte and his bride return
home. As she is getting out of her husband’s truck, Montserrat breaks a
delicate heel on her shoe. Jose Luis Alvarez, a.k.a. Antonio Alvares, fugitive
from justice and new overseer of Hacienda Almonte, is spying on the returning
couple. Montserrat’s former lover watches as Alejandro insists on picking up
his tiny wife and carrying her up the steps to the house and into her room.
Once in her room, Montserrat is still cold to Alejandro. He
had hoped that things might turn out differently…But she still blames Alejandro
for separating her from Jose Luis. She saw Alejandro at the outdoor café with
Esmerelda. She believes that Alejandro hired the woman who claimed to be Jose
Luis’ ex-girlfriend and caused her to doubt Jose Luis.
Alejandro denies this. He wants Montserrat to believe him.
But Montse returns that Alejandro will not believe her, when she says that his
‘friend’ Maria helped her in her attempt at escape. She tells him to get out of
her room.
The Stalkers Reveal
Themselves
Alejandro returns to his room. He is undressing, clothed
only in tight white jeans when Maria enters his room in a short white silk robe.
Maria devours Alejandro’s part clad body with her eyes. If he will let her, she
says, she will make Alejandro very happy.
She opens and drops the robe to reveal a lean but curvy body—dressed
only in Montserrat’s stolen bra and panties.
Alejandro stares at her, appalled. He reaches down to get
the robe on the floor and places it back on her shoulders. He speaks evenly but
it is clear that he is very angry. He tells Maria, “ I want to make something
very clear. If this happens again you will leave this house. Get out of my
room. And close the door behind you.”
At the same time Alejandro has his encounter with Maria,
Montserrat’s stalker, Jose Luis, is scaling the wall outside her second floor
bedroom balcony. He lands on the balcony and throws open the wooden shutters to
Montserrat’s room
Montserrat is startled and not happy to see Jose Luis. “Are
you crazy,” she asks? “What are you doing in my room?” Jose Luis, jealous, asks
her why Alejandro Almonte was just in her room. “Because he is my husband,” retorts
Montserrat. “Because this is his house.”
Jose Luis says that their situation needs clarification.
“Yes,” Montserrat agrees. She starts to tell him of the news of who really
killed Bruno Gamboa, just as a knock sounds on her door.
It is Alejandro. “Can he come in?” he asks. Montse rushes
Jose Luis to hide in her closet as she opens the door to her husband. He asks
why she locked her door. Montserrat says it is because she sleeps better. Alejandro reaches out to Montserrat. “I
thought the day might end with us a little closer.” He wants to talk. But Montserrat
keenly aware of the fact that her former lover is listening behind the arras,
pleads tiredness and asks if they can talk tomorrow. Alejandro agrees, says
goodnight and leaves the room.
Jose Luis comes out of the closet and roughly seats
Montserrat on her loveseat. He sits opposite her and reiterates that they must
talk. Monstse wants him to leave immediately—she does not want him to get into
more trouble. But Jose Luis insists that they talk. They discuss Bruno Gamboa
and Jose tells Montserrat that she cannot trust her mother’s version of events.
He cannot believe that she would let a man dominate her. She cannot believe he
has blood on his hands. Yes, Jose admits, he is responsible for the death of a
man. Sometimes things happen. Montse replies that the Jose Luis she knew would
never…
The argument continues.
In The Kitchen
Alejandro goes to the kitchen to get a glass of water. Maria
follows him there.
The woman is slightly hysterical. She feels really bad. He
replies that he is married. Period. “To
a woman who doesn’t love you,” Maria responds. She begins a manipulative
diatribe. “This is all my fault.” It’s
her fault, she says, because if she had only been more direct, and made her feelings
plain to Alejandro…
“Basta!” snarls Alejandro. “Victor told me that he can find
a place for you in Agua Azul in the business. I think you should go there.”
Maria now begs Alejandro not to make her go to Agua Azul He
should trust her.
Alejandro does not have the look of a fool. But he says to
Maria, “Let us forget this.
You have to accept that I am a married man. You cannot do
anything to change these things. “ He walks away.
But Maria’s face hardens as she responds to Ale’s departing
back, “Let us see if that is true.”
An Argument No One
Can Win
Montserrat and Jose Luis argue, fruitlessly. He says her
mother is lying to her. She blames him for not having spoken to her father when
she asked him to…Jose Luis gives Montserrat a clue to his character when he
replies. “For me, it was not important that I speak to your father. What was
important for me was what I felt,” he pounds his heart with his right fist,
“Here!”
Jose Luis poses a final question, “Do you want to live your
life with a man you do not love?” Montse says she does not want to live her
life on the run. She needs a little peace. She needs a little time to think. He
kisses her. “Your lips don’t lie.” He says.
She pushes him away. Please. Please.
Jose Luis agrees to leave her to think. “I will ask you a
favor. Do not take long for I may be the one get s hurt.” She agrees to give
him an answer tomorrow, but demands a favor in return. For no reason is he ever
to come into her bedroom ever again. I forbid you. She closes the shutters
behind her as he exits the room onto the balcony and climbs back down the side
of the house.
As he is leaving he ruins into Juventino. “What are you
doing near the house at this hour?” asks Juventino.” Jose Luis asks the same
question in return. It seems that each man went for a walk. They bid one
another good night.
It is unclear if Juventino saw Jose Luis climb down from
Montserrat’s balcony.
Next Day At The
Hacienda
Alejandro strides into the foreman’s house just as Rosario
is finished cleaning. Jose Luis is looking
at papers. Alejandro tells Rosario he wants her to work only for his wife.
Jose Luis and Alejandro have a bonding business
conversation. Jose needs a computer to do his job. Ale will get one tomorrow. They discuss the
Hacienda, what is under cultivation, fair living wages for the workers and
discover that they share many of the same values. They mount horses and ride
around the ranch. As they conclude their
ride, Alejandro seems to like Jose Luis very much. It is deeply poignant when
Alejandro opines that one day he and Jose Luis will be great friends.
Father Anselmo Takes
A Confession
Rosario brings a breakfast tray into Montserrat’s room and
catches la Señora with a curler in the front of her hair. Rosario notes that
Montse is less sad. Montse asks after Alejandro. Rosario answers that he went
out to do a tour of the ranch with the new capitaz.
Father Anselmo comes to visit the Hacienda. He is there to
visit Montserrat. She welcomes him and he begins to talk to her. They discuss
her family—she misses them. A meddling fellow, this priest notes that Montse
and Alejandro are not enjoying their time together as newlyweds. He knows the
circumstances of the wedding were not clear. There were many tricks and
misunderstandings. But Montserrat and Alejandro are married now and God wants
them to love each other. He begins a rapturous and idealized description of
Alejandro’s character. He is good and noble, perhaps a little impulsive,
but...and Montserrat is a good person.
Montserrat should turn to God to light the way.
Montserrat agrees that she needs strength to accept her
situation. She will speak to Father Anselmo privately, in the study, under the
seal of the confessional.
The study is dark. The priest and the woman sit, facing one
another, on heavy black and ancient looking furniture. The scene is viewed through the distorting effect
of two crystal decanters of spirits that sit on a table to the right.
Father Anselmo verbally paints a hagiographic picture of
Alejandro. He has suffered. His has not been an easy life. Alejandro has
integrity. The only mistake Ale made was to make the contract with her mother.
But Alejandro is very in love with you.
Father Anselmo begs Montserrat to forget her rancor and learn to love
her husband.
Montserrat doesn’t know what to think. Again, this is not how
she sees Alejandro. She still loves Jose Luis. She is very confused, especially
now that…
The priest catches her hesitation. She is afraid to trust
Father Anselmo—afraid of being betrayed. Anselmo self-righteously reminds her
of the sanctity of her confession.
Perhaps reassured, Montserrat finished her thought. “Jose
Luis is here. At the Hacienda. He is the new ranch foreman.”

Hope everyone enjoys the straight ahead narrative style of the recap. I thought such a style might be useful to help anyone new to the show to catch up with these major events without wading through too much opinion.
Here in the comments, however, I must mention that I cannot understand Father Anselmo's constant aggrandizement of Alejandro's character and finer qualities.
Huh? Did the priest fall asleep during one of Al's confessions?
Father Anselmo, do an apologia for your boy if you must, but I am not seeing Alejandro as an innocent, wronged choirboy.

What a fantastic recap! It was written like a novel and I hung on to every word! Marvelous!
Ale sure pushed Gracie's buttons didn't he? Good for him! At least more of the truth has finally come out and Monse can see how bad her Mama and Dimwit truly are. Now Monse also knows about LT Avendella but not really who killed him, that was Refugio.
I think Monse is starting to see the differences with Ale and JL. With Ale, I think she finally realizes she may, have misjudged him but she still doesn't trust him. I'm glad she called JL on his having no avocadoes. When she was kissing JL she looked reluctant to me. It wasn't the same as before. I am glad she got the story from JL too, and I'm glad she banned him from her room. No, Juvie didn't see JL climbing down from the balconey but he saw Monse on it.
Maria has a nerve, and I don't think she'll give up on Ale anytime soon. How icky to go get Monse's unmentionables and put them on, ewwwwwww, gross. Funny how she did that, I guess she thinks that would have turned Ale on. Maria needs to go. I wish Ale had been firmer with her and sent her off to Victor.
Loving Rosario and glad Ale told her to only take care of his wife. I am glad Rosario told Ale Maria said it was her job to look after JL and Refugio. Good for Ale.
I am liking the Padre and how he gets the truth out of everyone. He didn't like the fact of the seal of the confessional and I can't wait to see what advice he gives Monse. It should be good.

I think that Gracie is starting to realize that her new yerno ( my Ipad wants to change this to "new year") is not so easily controlled. I am enjoying the menacing looks that he shoots at her.
Yikes..JL decides that it would be a good idea to climb up to Juliette's balcony. really ? She seemed to be pushing his sweaty self away to me.
I like the way Monymony gets dressed up everyday in her little dress, heels, and jewelry with no where to go.
in AR, the hacienda was quite a long carriageride to town, so Matilde was stranded at the hacienda and did not see her family for quite a long time.
I thought we were going to get some action when Ale carried Monymony into the house! but....no.
Maria is a cheeky thing...just as the housekeeper was in AR. She wants what she wants. Stealing the undies from Monymony was....creepy...and didn't work out so well...HA.

EJ thanks so much for this recap. I enjoyed your approach as Mads said it read like a novel. And I'm w/you on Padre A's "constant aggrandizement" of Ale. Yes Ale has some great qualities but he has a lot of growing up to do; did he think one day of not being on lock down would cause Monse to fall in his arms? I mean as SR ok but not for Monse w/Ale. Moreover, she keeps getting bombs dropped on her: finding out about the depths of depravity of her mother and brother and JL's lack of avocados and common sense.
Don't you love how men in tns always feel that can handle the crazed woman after them but usually always fail to keep crazy at bay; I guess "Fatal Attraction" doesn't seem to be on tn galan's radar and this is a shame as so many bad situations could be avoided.
And why can't poor Ale at this moment start tracking Maria's actions so he can see a pattern? If we follow the tn playbook, its just matter of time before Maria gets him drugged or drunk, gets in bed w/him and manages to get "caught" by Monse. Sigh.
Once Monse and Ale really can communicate, they need to realize that Graceless is not to be trusted EVER; there is always an angle to her version of events. While JL is not blameless (though extremely clueless), he was framed.

I also think that Monserrat is falling out of love with Jose Luis. His failure to approach the Admiral and the blood on his hands (even if he didn't shoot the lieutenant) is not working in his favor. Also, Monserrat doesn't want to live a fugitive life and she is within her rights to refuse it.
When Maria stole the lingerie I thought she was going to do something else with it. She has to be all kinds of stupid to think that this was a good move. Now she can't do with the underwear what I thought she was going to do with it (plant it in the cottage or elsewhere).
However, it could fall into Juvenpervo's hands. That exponentially raises the Ick Factor.

ITA with "Father Anselmo, do an apologia for your boy if you must, but I am not seeing Alejandro as an innocent, wronged choirboy". While it is true that Ale might not have been forthcoming about all that occurred (as UA noted), he is not the poster boy for galan behavior. Far from it...

Madelaine, I was cheering at Ale's skilled handling of Graciela. A forced confession I am sure leaving out the all important detail that she did indeed frame JL.

Urban, I agree with you about Maria taking Montse's clothes - I thought "voodoo", NOT going all fatal attraction on Ale. Wearing another woman's underwear (your RIVAL!) is all kinds of icky, but what can we expect from someone who allows disgusting Juvie to be near her?
Madelaine, I totally got the same feeling as you about Montse not being as smitten as before with JL. She was mainly pissed that he dared to enter her room,in HER husband's house.
She's really starting to take pride in calling Ale HER husband, don't yall think?
She did kiss JL but I think AB doesn't like him too much, she seems rather uncomfortable in their kissing scenes.
And I loved how she told him at the end to never come to her room again. She might still be resisting it, but her subconscious is yelling: "This is YOUR house, YOUR husband, YOUR life; forget about the Sweaty One and start remodelling the house - you know you want to."

Probably you know Elizabeth Gaskell, the wonderful 19th century British novelists. This really gave me the experience of reading her work.

Man, you were on fire when you wrote this Elna June. I got chills reading the first paragraph. Just beautifully written the whole way through. Thank you so much.
I understand Padre Anselmo's wish to make everything hunky-dory in the marriage, but even if one "decides" to forgive, it still takes a very long time to arrive there emotionally. And Montserrat still doesn't trust Alejandro enough to make that decision.
Both the Padre and Alejandro are putting too much pressure on speedy reconciliation. But I find that very realistic.
Outsiders always underestimate the difficulty of forgiveness. And abusers (and much as I adore Alejandro, there has been abuse) are always in a hurry to put the past behind and move on. Can't blame him. But it won't work.
Still think Maria is capable of planting those undies in the capataz bungalow to frame Montserrat.
Ugh...admit that I'm like the good Padre and just want our lead couple to get together and be happy...but we've got months and months of sturm und drang before that happens.

However, she does have a history of crumpling a bit when someone puts the thumbscrews on her.
I felt sorry for Monse in this episode. Seems like she has her world turned upside down daily. On this day her idolized view of her One True Love did a flip flop. First the proof that he was so viciously wronged by her own mother and bro, then the news that he was involved in a murder. No wonder she is confused.

Thanks to all who have commented this morning. It is a chilly 35* here in Sonoma County, CA. My hat is off to all of you who live in more seasonal climes.
Last night was another key episode. I have stopped using the word 'pivotal'. There have been episodes in this TN so far that could count as important in terms of advancing the story.
This ensemble of actors is pretty much knocking my socks off. We are enjoying some really fine performances in this show.

NovelaMaven, I also gave JL an extra credit point for not immediately whining "But I didn't shoot the guy, I just left him lying dead and abandoned on the ground, boo hoo!" He and Refu have an interesting friendship, all for one if you will.

At first I agreed with The Patio consensus that the actor playing JL is a weak link. I'm beginning to change my mind on that point. While not exactly likable, I think the actor is doing a good job on this ambiguous character. JL still lacks avocados though. Guacamole anyone?
Thanks Elna June, great recap. Montse, the younger, is far more realistic and the stronger of the crossed lovers. Although she thinks she still loves JL, she has decided to take the high road and fulfill her promise to her marriage. One does not fall out of love quickly, but she being stronger and less self-centered has decided to emotionally move on and try to control her sentiments. JL on the other hand, is excellently playing a man driven and consumed by emotions, without regard to how it may hurt others, and without regard to human costs. He is desperate, emotional, blinded by what he wants, and less controlled than Montse. This is the trait that will (I think) eventually poison Montse's love for him.

Thanks for the great recap. Such fun. First time posting here ... I am loving this novela. Reminds me of the good, old novelas I watched in Brasil growing up in the 60s.
I'm with the Padre on the total Alejandro love. I cannot imagine, truly, having that man anywhere near me and being able to resist for even an instant! A bit of a haircut would be even better. Guapissimo!
AB did a wonderful job of conveying MonMon's wavering feelings where JL is concerned. It's clear that she's falling, finally, for the true galan. And the more desperate JL becomes, the more she will pull away. Love how perverse and spoiled she is and all the touches the actress brings to show this. Her quirky little doll walk is priceless. Constant tossing of the hair also amusing.

I am guessing that being a country girl with no way of getting to a Victoria's Secret, Maria felt the need for some cute undies to finally catch Ale's ...er......eye...and realized that the only person who might own such undies was Monymony. The scene reminded me of Bridget Jones's lament about wearing granny panties. You have to admit that the girl is nervy. ...not smart...but nervy.
Ale knows how to push Gracie's buttons, It was satisfying to see someone make her feel uncomfortable for a change.

Maria de A...I enjoyed your observations. I agree that the actor playing Juvie has a Charles Bronson vibe. My mother used to describe that type of guy as "ugly handsome." She was a fan of Dean Martin.
JL is definitely a tragic figure who is his own worst enemy. Like Maria, he is not strong in common sense, but then , most telenovela characters are lacking in the common sense department.

But to me JL showed his character when he admitted he had blood on his hands, even though we know Refugio killed the officer. JL and Ale would be best buds if not for Montse. Both are good but flawed, like most.
Montse's got another moral dilemma. Does she go to the authorities about the true murderer of Bruno Gamboa? That would clear one strike against JL. If she went to the authorities, she would find out about the gun planted in JL's room and realize the deliberate frame-up. Or does she keep silent to protect her pop from another heart attack? Lauro already knows his son is a good-for-nothing -- maybe he could handle this news. It doesn't seem fair for JL to be on the run for the rest of his life.

Why? We can assume a combination of rivalry between the military and civilian forces, pressure from Graciela to keep things as quiet as possible, and maybe (though this is just a guess) the captain's suspicions about Pedro's (dis)honesty.
It is the navy's closing ranks around the scandalous behavior of their own men that has, ironically, shielded these guys and allowed them to move about undetected.

Thanks for the welcoming words and, yes, I will email you separately, nwanyi, about as novelas brasileiras. I feel like a traitor because I have tried recently to get into what TV Globo currently has on tap and just can't get into any of them. Perhaps a better crop will come along. A good novela for me is one in which you can get the picture within an episode or two. Like any good fairytale, you want those archetypes in place.

Maria is just something else. I loved how Ale shut that down, but was disappointed he didn't send her off to town immediately, or at least to the servants' quarters, instead of that wimpy "if this happens again" nonsense. I'm excited for Montse to take charge of the house and redecorate it. That will really irk Maria.
I can't believe the hacienda doesn't have a dedicated undies hotline. Even in Fuego en la Sangre, where there were no other phones, the village had a dedicated Emergency Lingerie Line.
When my speaking class was discussing New Year traditions, my Mexican student told us that in Mexico wearing yellow undies is supposed to bring you luck. Maria obviously forgot this tradition. Time for her to make that trip to Victoria's secret for the right color so that she can get lucky with Ale.

Elna June, the other day we were talking about "Gone with the Wind", and Ale effortlessly striding up those steep stairs carrying Monymony made me think of Rhett carrying Scarlett upstairs.
Do we know why perpetually scowling Pedro is so hot to buy land from Ale ? I am worried about what he might do to Ale to get that land.

Ale needs to send Maria to work in town ASAP. Out on the hacienda, with few prospects, of course she's going to keep obsessing over Ale. Maybe, just maybe, she could now get distracted with JL and Refugio around, but in town, she wouldn't have Ale access, and she could see that there are a lot more prospects of the manly type in the world. Hey, maybe she could take Pedro off Nadia's hands. They'd be well matched, morally speaking.

I'm still scratching my head of the lack of telephones in FELS.
What I neglected to say before is that with JL's impulsive nature and his bad choices he wouldn't be officer material and Lauro might not have approved of him after all.

I always thought it was a little odd and not completely fair that Montse wanted JL to go announce himself to her father, all out of the blue and everything. She is the one with the relationship with her father...why couldn't she have said, "Papa, I'm seeing someone, and I'd like you to meet him" and then asked JL over? But his total wishy washiness about it was pathetic. He'd get to the door, then run and hide when anyone else was around. Not very mature or confident.
Maria...the film has got some disturbing moments.I was haunted by it...and not exactly in a good way. But when Charles Bronson slowly takes off his shirt...well, you get my drift.And he was the strong, capable hombre who saved our injured damsel.

Julia B -- I agree that Mons should have broached the subject of JL with her Papito before bringing him over to talk to the old man. She didn't exactly step up to the plate either. The young love crowd seems driven by impulses and stop signs that they don't fully recognize and can't or won't admit to.
There is an underlying class theme in all this too. Mons puts all these guys through hoops to win her -- She flirts and teases and gives into kisses and embraces and then plays high princess, setting goals and tasks. And both of these fellows, JL and Ale, are not of her class. She is more than aware of this, as are they, and all three keep playing the game. LOVE it!
Ale missed a prime opportunity last night to say, Hey, So happy to hear you are interested in running OUR household. This is wonderful news!
Instead, poor sad devil, he goes straight into Hoping to Get Laid mode, which gives his wife yet another opportunity to say, What are you talking about? She can't admit that she wants to hop into bed with him and that beyond wanting to set the menu for the day, she's jealous of the pathetic Maria.
Daniela Castro looks and sounds SO much like the American actress who has played Jill on Young and the Restless for decades. Uncanny.
