Lo que la vida me robo Cap.17 Wed Dec 11th,2013 The girl fight, it is soooo on

Oooo someone needs to bring out the cages because tonight is the start of what is poised to be one hell of a cat fight, on one corner we have Maria, a country girl with bad hair accessories, I have a feeling this girl is not above playing dirty. In the other corner we have Montserrat, a spoiled girl who has never had to fight for anything because mommy and daddy always took care of her, she might seem fragile, and she is so tiny that a strong wind might carry her off, but don't count her out of this fight, she might be tiny but the girl has spunk and fire in her belly, and I think if it came down to it she'd cut someone,  and do it while looking like she just came out of a fashion magazine, girl looks good!

Now on to the episode. Enjoy!

But you're the maid, right?

Alejandro walks into his wife's bedroom, he was getting some paper work out of the desk and managed to wake her up, he apologizes and tells her he will have someone move the desk into his room because she wont be needing it, as he is leaving Montse calls out to him and says that she would like to visit the padres community, Alejandro wants to know why she is showing so much interest in the community and she says it's because she wants to help out the padre, she needs something to keep her busy and to keep the boredom at bay. Alejandro agrees to her request and tells her to get dressed and get something to eat, once she's done they will visit the padre and ask for a tour.

Round one of this fight starts when Montserrat walks into the dinning room and asks Maria to serve her breakfast, she's not rude about it and even greets Maria with a good morning. Maria on the other hand seems to forget that she's taking to her boss and replies  to the request by  saying "I'm not the maid", "oh", replies Montserrat "then what are you doing here?", "I'm putting away the clean table cloths" she says and this is when Montserrat wins round one, she raises her eyebrows and asks "well, isn't  that the the kind of job a maid does?" oh burn. Montserrat wins this one hands down.

Maria tells Montse that she only takes orders from Alejandro and no one else, Montse is not a happy panda, she notes that the staff is way to friendly with Alejandro and Maria points out that she and Alejandro have been friends for years- they were chummy before Alejandro was the owners son, Montse is confused by this but before Maria can continue Alejandro walks in and the verbal jabs end. I have a feeling that watching these two go at each other will be fun.

Before leaving the house Montse asks her hubby for a favor, she wants her aunt to come stay with them for a while, "I feel alone, I need someone to talk to... someone to love me" AB delivered that line so well that it really made me feel for her character, she reminded me in that moment that this kid is only 19 and has been used in a horrible way by her awful mother and brother, and while the audience knows that Alejandro has feelings for her she still thinks he is only with her because he bought her. The look on Alejandro's face also sealed the deal for me, he gets her, he knows she is unhappy and I think it saddens him a lot. He agrees to have Carlota stay with them.

Rosario almost brings me to tears, someone get me a hanky!

Padre Anselmo is getting ready to start his day when Rosario walks in, he wonders where she's been all morning and she tells him that she went to the river to wash her clothes, she's nervous about meeting Alejandro, what will he think of her? She's embarrassed by her clothes and lack of shoes, and asks him for a loan to buy some new clothing and of course shoes, but sadly he is broke. she looks heart broken, she wonders if her son will reject her. The padre tells her not to worry, Alejandro will be happy just to have her, she's his mother! What she's wearing will be the last thing on her sons mind! She asks the padre is her son ever judged her for having been raped (que?! dios mio, pobre mujer!) I almost cried for her, she feels like she's not worthy because some animal attacked her and then had her thrown in jail on false charges. How heartbreaking. Padre Anselmo tells her that her son knew that his father was a beast that treated people poorly, and that Alejandro knew his dad was a bad man. He tells her he has errands to run but he will be back later to take her to see her boy.

We are then taken back to the hacienda where Juventino the pig walks in and grabs himself a piece of fruit, sadly we get to see him devour that poor mango (it looks like a mango to me), Maria informs him that it looks like the new lady of the house had no idea that her hubby was just a poor farm hand up until a few months ago, she tells him that maybe if Montse knew  her husbands background she would run for the hills. she tells her uncle that once she spills the beans she wants him to help Montse run away. Her uncle thinks this is a good idea. I hate both of them and hope that Maria dies via a tragic accident involving a headband, and that Juventino dies at the hands of an innocent piece of fruit. I nominate watermelon, that's one fruit that I've always been suspicious of.

Alejandro meets his mommy

Alejandro and Montse arrive at the padres very humble home, and find only Rosario. She's cleaning the floors and let's them know that the padre is gone, Alejandro thanks her and starts to leave, Rosario then calls to him and asks him his name, he tells her that he is Alejandro Almonte, Her face changes and tears come to her eyes, she follows her son and his new bride and tears up as she sees them drive away. I find that I can't take my eyes of off the actress, she's playing the part perfectly, she makes me want to hug her and tell her that her son will love her regardless of what she's wearing or of her humble background.

Alejandro and Montse arrive at the community and we are treated to several minutes of them talking to the farm workers and playing with the children, both Montse and ale give money to the workers and they look happy, that makes for a nice change.

After the fun is over they go back home where Montse goes off on Alejandro, she wants to know why he has done so little for his workers, they need schools, a clinic, they need help! What she wonders, has he been doing with his money? Has he been off blowing it like a Junior (that means a spoiled young man, whose parents pay for him to party and who does nothing other than blow money)- ummm no dear Montserrat, you've got the wrong guy, I think you're describing your dead beat brother.

Alejandro pleads his case, he had no access to any money, his father was the one with the deep pockets and he had a different way of doing things. He explains that he only recently got the money and that he has plans to pave the roads, build a school a clinic and homes with indoor plumbing. Montse's eyes light up and she offers her help, Alejandro tells her that she can be in charge of the project and that he will put her in touch with padre Anselmo so they can sort out the details. He then leaves to go do manly work.

Soon after he departs Maria and a worker walk in with some bags, Montse asks for an explanation and is given the most wonderful news- Maria is moving into the big house, on Alejandro's orders, Montse is left speechless. I'm gonna say Maria winds round two.

Padre Anselmo finally comes home and Rosario tells him that she met her son, the padre is happy to hear that they have met and asks why Alejandro is not still with her, he then realizes that Rosario kept mum about him being her son. She tells the padre that Alejandro is  handsome, and a total gentleman, there's no way she can ever reveal that she is his mother, he is now something else, a man that belongs to another social class and she will never be able to tell him the truth. He would be embarrassed to tell his friends that she is his mother- and then she asks the padre if the young woman that was with him was his girlfriend, padre tells her that Montse is Alejandro's wife. Rosario has nothing but kind words for Montse- she looked so elegant and beautiful. It's almost like she's a princess. she muses that someone like her and her family would never take her into the fold and consider her family. Well, she's right on one count, can you imagine Graciela ever having her over for tea? Yeah, me neither. Padre Anselmo tries to tell her again that Alejandro would never be ashamed of her, and that she can not deny him the happiness of being able to hug her, the speech is not working and finally he has enough and tells her to grab her stuff, they are going to the big house.

Get the witch out of mi case!

Back at the hacienda Alejandro has come back from a morning spent working out in the fields, Dominga is giving him a nice cold drink and a few minutes later Montse arrives, she asks him if he plans to shower before sitting down for lunch. He asks her if she finds his appearance repulsive, he understands that she finds him his personality repulsive but is she also going to pick on the way he looks? She gives a small nod and tells him that she was only thinking about him, having lunch can't be pleasant when you smell like horses and like you have been in a barn. He corrects her and tells her that he was not with the horses, he was out in the fields. He also tells her that she is no longer in Agua Azul, and unlike her parasite brother he is used to hard work, he has been working his whole life and if the smell of hard work bothers her tough cookies. Also, he points out he was going to clean himself before having lunch- he is not an animal!

Our smelly and sweaty hero starts to leave but he's not fast enough, Montse asks him why he allowed Maria to move in and he says it's because she is a dear friend and she has to give up her house when the new capataz comes in. Montse argues that she should live with the other household staff, when Alejandro asks why she wants Maria to leave she says it's because she dislikes her (someone from the patio screams 'so do we!"), Alejandro tells his new bride that  he is not going to kick out his friend simply because she wants him to, he is not going to give in to her whims and demands, when she points out that she is his wife and that she has every right to demand that he kick Maria out he tells her that she has no rights because she has not earned them. Way to make your wife happy dude.

Mi case es tu casa-unless your name in Maria

Padre Anselmo arrives with Rosario at the hacienda, Dominga tells him to go to the living room because that's where he will find Alejandro, he goes and Rosario is left behind in the kitchen with Dominga. Alejandro and Montse greet the padre and she gets him to agree to stay for lunch, she then excuses herself and goes to check on the food. When she gets there she tells Dominga that the food smells great and asks  her to serve the food and to add another spot on the table for the padre.

She is on her way back to the living room but turns back and asks Rosario if she was the one that was in the padres house that morning, Rosario says that yes, that was her. Montse smiles and asks Dominga to get Rosario something to eat and some clothes and shoes, although I wish she had done this outside of Rosario's hearing range I give her kudos for being so thoughtful. Dominga tells her she will take care of Rosario and once Montse leaves she offers Rosario some chicharones in salsa verde. Ooo Rosario today is your lucky day, you get you hunky son back and chicharones, that counts as the BEST.DAY.EVER.

We join padre Anselmo and Alejandro in the living room, the padre thanks him for everything he is planning to do for the community, he then tells Alejandro that he needs a favor from him, there's a woman who has no one in the world and needs help, he wonders of she can stay in the hacienda and work there. Montserrat has joined them and she says she would be more than happy if the woman stayed, hell, she could even live in the house with them since Alejandro loves having the help live in the house, there are so many rooms in the house and Rosario can move right in. in fact a woman just moved in today, so what's one more? She then takes the padre and heads to the kitchen to have lunch, leaving behind Alejandro who looks both amused and a little annoyed.

Rosario is in the kitchen when Maria comes in, she asks where Dominga is and is told that she is serving lunch. This folks is where we see the difference between Montserrat and Maria.  Montse who grew up wealthy and who could be a bitch considering that Graciela raised her offered Rosario help, Maria, who grew up with less and who should be more humble actually told poor Rosario not to steal anything.

Yes, you read that right. I wanted to scream at my tv that Rosario could steal any goddamn thing she wanted and that Maria would have no right to say anything because nothing inside that house, including Alejandro belongs to her. She needs to take a step back and realize that she is no better than Rosario or anyone else. How funny that Montse has never been portrayed as someone who thinks her money/ social status matters whereas broke ass Maria thinks she's better than both Dominga and Rosario, can you imagine how awful she would be if she had been born into a wealthy family?  At any rate that bitch should have left Rosario alone to enjoy her food, I hated the way Rosario looked after Maria's comment.

Back in the dinning room it is agreed that Rosario stays, Padre Anselmo excuses himself in order to go give Rosario the news and once he leaves Montse and Ale argue again. He tells Montse that she should not have made fun of the padre by saying Rosario could stay in the house. Montserrat replies that she was not making fun, if one servant can live in the house so can two. Alejandro tells her that Maria is not an employee, she is his friend and Montse tells him she sees her as no different than any other servant. Alejandro says it's his house and his word is the only one that counts. Maria stays in the big house and Rosario stays with the other workers. Montse looks like she is going to stab him. Note to Alejandro, never upset a woman that's holding a knife, things could get ugly for you. Padre Anselmo and Alejandro leave, but not before he tells them to behave.

Maria brings the chisme, she does a better job than Perez Hilton

Montse walks into her room to find Maria sitting in her bed (the nerve!) she tells her that she has crossed the line and to get the hell out of her bed, Maria tells her that she's just there to answer her question about Alejandro, and then she unloads on Montse. she tells her her husband was not just poor, he was uber poor, he lived in a small home with his grandfather because his mother died during child birth and get this he is also a bastard! Surely you don't want to be married to him! Hey, if you want to leave I could help you!

Montse catches on and tells Maria that she knows she is being told this because Maria hopes it will make her leave. She tells her it is not Alejandro's fault that he was born out of wedlock, and that if anyone needs to be ashamed it's Alejandro's vile father, she won't tell Alejandro that she knows about his past because she does not want to hurt him, but she will take Maria up on her offer to run away.

Padre Anselmo is now home and is trying to talk Alejandro into seeing that having Maria around is not good news. Any new bride would be upset that her husband has a woman around that is both pretty and very outspoken about her feelings for him. Having Maria around will only lead to bad things, and he urges Ale to be honest with himself about what his true motives are for having Maria around-to make Montse jealous and to show her that there's always someone on stand by. Alejandro says Montse could never be jealous because she never loved him, she just used him! Padre Anselmo tells him to work things out with his wife, to talk things through and see what her side of the story is, his advice falls on deaf ears.

In the hacienda Juventino and Maria plot, he is going to help Montse run away, but he says, it would be better is she's gone forever-get my drift? as long as she's alive/around she will always be a threat. Maria tells her uncle to do whatever he sees fit. Maria, welcome to the dark side, may you get a major anvil dropped on your head before this is over.

In other news
Jose Luis and Refugio spend a night under the stars and the next day manage to get a job in the fields, lucky for them the produce has to be delivered to Morelia! Jose Luis and Refugio get the owner to let them drive the produce there and Jose Luis is over the moon because he will soon be with Montse. His plan for finding her? Ask random people on the street if they know her. Once they arrive at their destination they find that it's actually really hard to find someone in a city, they get more doors slammed on them more than a Jehovah's witness does on a Saturday morning.

Join us tomorrow when Montserrat runs away from home. *sorry for any typos, it's 3:29am here and I'm half asleep*

Thank you, Eli, I was looking forward to reading this.

First of all, fruits have NEVER looked more disgusting then now, when Juvie is munching them like they are candy.
Whenever he takes out that comb and uses it for his greasy hair AND for Maria's, I cringe... She doesn't seem to mind it, though... Blech!

Has Maria suddenly transformed from being the intrusive & entitled other woman to a full blown villainous asassin??? I could almost hear her brain cells working when Juvie was asking about killing Montse.

Rosario's scenes were heartbreaking to watch. When Ale found out the woman brought by the padre had the same name as his dead mom, you could see it impressed him - I'm sure he'd receive Rosario with open arms, but I understand her fear, too, especially with Princess Montserrat struting the hallways of the ranch.

Has anyone found sweaty & dirty Ale after a day of work much more appealing than sweaty & dirty JL after a day of mooning over Montse? Yeah, I thought so.

Ale and Montse's interactions are tense enough considering their relationship, but they both have moments when they can't help but see the good in the other person. Too bad the only thing that doesn't work with this development is their first night together - by the way Montse is acting, you'd think it never happened. Bad writing!

Eli, I am over the moon ecstatic about your recap. I loved it. To say it was sensational was an understatement. You had me smiling and laughing the entire way through. Creative and witty yet razor sharp.

I had 2 dozen lines that bear reapeating but pared them down to: "she might be tiny but the girl has spunk and fire in her belly, and I think if it came down to it she'd cut someone, and do it while looking like she just came out of a fashion magazine, girl looks good!", "she reminded me in that moment that this kid is only 19 and has been used in a horrible way", "I nominate watermelon, that's one fruit that I've always been suspicious of" (great line), "she makes me want to hug her and tell her that her son will love her", "He then leaves to go do manly work", "can you imagine Graciela ever having her over for tea? Yeah, me neither, "Mi case es tu casa-unless your name in Maria" and finally, "they get more doors slammed on them more than a Jehovah's witness does on a Saturday morning. Sensational all.

The cat, err, girl fight was fun. I initially thought they were evenly matched but when Maria's murderous personna emerged at the end, the scales sadly tipped. Monse is not a conniving, cold blooded murderer in waiting. Bad blood does run in the Juvie/Maria family - certainly.

I agree with you and Adriana Noel that Rosario's scenes were difficult to watch. And Ana, the actress is a revelation here. I can't recall her playing a sympathetic character (usually they are evil or annoying) and she is shining here. I have no doubt Ale would welcome her with open arms. The good Padre is also quickly becoming a favorite with me...

Hope Tia Carlota arrives soon to give Monse some much needed love and support.

I would ask the writers to put a moritorium on food and beverages as well as any hairstyling equipment. What could be worse than Juvie sliming on fruit? Doing it while combing his/Maria's hair. Ack. That is an image I don't want indelibly seared on my brain!

Wonderful Eli. You made my day.

Diana

Diana, who would have thought that combing your hair or eating fruit (!!!) could be so nasty?
I predict many more tears in Rosario's future, but Montse's first reaction to her makes me hope that she'll be in her corner.

Adriana Noel: You are so right! I may never look at fresh fruit (or combing my hair) the same way again...Ack.

Yes, Monse does seem very sympathetic to Rosario and am also hopeful the two will forge a close relationship.

Diana

Oh my gosh Eli! This is absolutely wonderful, hilarious and thorough! Thank you so much for filling in little bits I missed. Ah, lots of rays of light in here for our lovers: the subtle but obvious brightening of Ale's face when Montse called to him as he was leaving the bedroom and how he was touched when she asks for Tia Lottie to come and stay.

Love this, Eli: "I hate both of them and hope that Maria dies via a tragic accident involving a headband, and that Juventino dies at the hands of an innocent piece of fruit." Watermelon is a good choice, it literally makes me sick! Really creeped out by Juve's combing her hair and his bordering on incestuous caresses. Doesn't seem to bother Maria -- yuck!

Another full ray of light was the whole interaction with the workers and their children and Montse. Her having asked to come and truly being touched by and enjoying the outing AND asking to run the project to provide health, education and social services. She really was looking at Ale with different eyes and their smiling at each other was almost as good as a passionate kiss.

Ok, I think your name for Maria out to stick: "broke Ass Maria"! Perfect! Uuuuf! How she treated Rosario! Dumb heffa doesn't know this will come back to bite her in her broke ass while Montse will earn further points for her sincere kindness to Rosario.

Major points for Montse's reaction to broke ass Maria's attempts to turn her against Alejo. Broke ass thinks Montse's shallow because she's rich but she's the shallow and dense one.

Padre Anselmo ah, the voice of reason. Ale may not be listening now but these sage words of advice are like little seeds that will come to fruition in Ale's brain later. And re Rosario, I guess it would not be sufficiently novelaesque to have her want to reunite with Ale right away. I can understand her hesitation. She will get to know and love her son for the wonderful man he is from a(for her) safe distance. I'm hoping that as I said yesterday Montse and Rosario will bond and Lottie will bring some good sense and light into the household and help our lovers, too.

Finally, Refugio and the Sweaty One: "they get more doors slammed on them more than a Jehovah's witness does on a Saturday morning." Looked like some special bonding at the water hole yesterday and now under moonlight in the haystack. . .they oughta give this some thought cause Sweatmeister ain't getting Montse! Thanks again, Eli!

Eli, Thank you for the great recap and snark.

Rosario washed her clothes in the river? I thought this version was updated into the 21st century. Que the ???? No hay porque hacerlo a la Lavanderio.

”I hate both of them and hope that Maria dies via a tragic accident involving a headband,”
Oooh, diademacide! ;-) And maybe Juvi will choke on a piece of fruit. Frutacide?

The Maria equivalent in AR, Antonia, dressed and behaved in a higher class manner. She was also educated and smart enough to manage the books at the hacienda, IIRC. Therefore, this tonta de Maria treating Rosario like a low-class employee made a little sense.
Our diadema queen, well, somehow the writers missed the mark, so it looks like the pot calling the kettle black.

deleted previous post to edit a typo....

Dear Eli,

Thanks for a wonderful and very funny recap. I loved your disclosure of your suspicions about watermelon, and also your line about about J-L and Refugio getting more doors closed on them than Jehovah's Witnesses on Saturday morning! I laughed out loud.

I appreciated, too, your expression of your feelings for Rosario. It was so sad the way she felt ashamed of what had happened. I hope she will be able to become close enough to Ale and Montse to reveal the truth soon.

I was very grateful for some show of good feeling between Ale and Montse in this epi. She seemed to appreciate the fact many other people love and respect him. She also clearly admired his football moves.

Thanks again for a terrific recap!

Lila: "Ale may not be listening now but these sage words of advice are like little seeds that will come to fruition in Ale's brain later" - really enjoyed this.

doris, you are right about Antonia in AR - different scenario all together. Although I suspect Maria's street smarts (so to speak) will mean more bating and taunting for Monse, for which I feel she is well prepared and able to defend herself. And then some.

Diana

Excellent work, Eli. Love the asides about the criminal tendencies of fruit. Let's hope Juventino doesn't decide to get with bananas.

However, his thoughts appear headed in that direction.

Maria is thoroughly bad and presumptuous. Not very bright either if she doesn't realize why Juventino combs her hair.

Rosario is heartbreaking. Inn AR she was played by Ana Martin; the sordid past was different but her feelings and motives at this stage were the same.

Thanks for the excellent and very funny recap. Too many favorite moments to quote them all but I’m particularly fond of “I hate both of them and hope that Maria dies via a tragic accident involving a headband, and that Juventino dies at the hands of an innocent piece of fruit. I nominate watermelon, that's one fruit that I've always been suspicious of.” Re Juvie and Maria and the comb, as the mother of school aged kids I can only think “EWWW! LICE!” every time that comb comes out. Well, it would serve them both right!

UA - "Let's hope Juventino doesn't decide to get with bananas" - still laughing.

I was thinking that I much prefer this interpretation of Rosario realizing that the actresses interpretation is heartwrenching. Love Ana Martin but this is really tugging at the heartstrings.

Diana

Eli, what a wonderful recap!!

"Junior". That's a new one for me, but I like it. I know a couple of jerks who would identify with that moniker.

I especially loved your comments about Maria. They've already been noted, but they were GREAT!!

Love your writing style, Eli!!

Fatima

Lila, I agree with you about JL and Refugio re:
"Looked like some special bonding at the water hole yesterday and now under moonlight in the haystack"

- they should really be careful with these two, if they start combing their hair with the same piece of fruit... oh no, that's another dynamic duo

I'm thinking Juvie plans to do a little more with Montse than just kill her - poor girl, she's always one step away from being raped... oh, wait, that already happened - sort of.

Well done, Eli! I laughed out loud at your watermelon line. Me too! Never have trusted that fruit.

Wow, we could really see Maria’s brain click over to the dark side during that last scene with Juvie. It’s on! I hope Ale starts to hear Padre’s words of advice about the Maria situation, sooner, rather than later.

Adriana- ITA about how the writers have written Monse’s attitude after the rape. It’s like they don’t know what to do with it (so they should have just left it out). I hope it comes back to be a BIG issue between them. Otherwise, I think all the scenes between them this episode were very well done. At the end of the day, despite the differences in how they were raised, they both have good hearts and want to help others. They can find some common ground, if they let themselves.

I appreciated that Monse correctly, and without any malice, said that Ale was born out of wedlock and was illegitimate, as Maria kept calling him a bastard. It didn’t matter to her, but just added to her understanding of Ale. But of course she still wants to get the hell out of there, if she can. But what about the projects for the workers and their families?!

Maria doesn’t seem to have a clear role in the household. She is not technically a maid (we have seen other silent maids doing their work in the house, in dresses and aprons). She was just the overseer’s daughter, and to me she seems just as aimless and spoiled as Monse has been, except she’s meaner and has a chip on her shoulder about class distinctions.

ITA about Rosario. When she came out and looked at the car pulling away, it was really heartbreaking. Yes, most people in the world still wash their clothes in rivers. What was really sad was that she had to wait all morning at the river for her dress to dry since it’s the only one she has.

Eli:

Marvelous, superb recap! I too loved your asides, but I like watermelon : ) Too bad we haven't seen Juvie eating pumpkin, now that would be a nice heavy anvil, have you ever seen how big they can get? Ginormous and enough to crush his butt ; )

I too think Maria has gone to the dark side. Her 'tude is ridiculous. I hated what she said to Rosario and agree it will come to hit Maria in the butt later. Liked the death by headband too.

I am really liking Monste's spunk. Girl does have fire in her belly, loved that line. I really like how she cares for the poor people on the ranch and what she did for Rosario. Monste and that scene with the baby was precious. I too am wondering about the people Monste wants to help, now that she's running away, or is she? I wonder if this is a set up for Maria, not a spoiler, just a thought.

I too am really liking Padre A. He is the voice of reason. I wish he and Montse would have a little heart to heart.

It's funny how Ale and Montse really don't know about each other. She had no idea he used to be poor, and he has no idea she wasn't with being bought. They really both need to sit down and talk, with no interruptions. It would go a long way in understanding each other. I really hope Lottie comes for a visit, maybe then Padre A and Lottie can talk some sense into both of them.

I don't like the previews of Juvie having his hands all over Montse, but maybe Ale catches him and Juvie will be done for. One can hope : )

I was also wondering about the inconsistency of Monserrat wanting to help the poor and also to leave. How is she going to manage both?

Maria does appear to be spoiled and aimless. I find it difficult to believe that her father is responsible for that because he would know the shame of having a lazy, useless child.

Add my thanks Eli for such a wonderful, funny recap. I may never look at a watermelon the same again.

I have to agree with everyone here that the actress playing Rosario stuns me. Everything I've seen her in before, she has come off shrill and I've not really enjoyed her acting, and you can "enjoy" someone who isn't sympathetic. But lord, she had my heart breaking for her last night and her portrayal was so heart-felt.

Of course, wanting to slap Maria for what she said to her. Not that I don't want to slap Maria whenever she appears on the screen, but that was uncalled for. If her character is ever redeemed, she will have a long climb up from the dregs she is falling into.

Love the Padre. May he live long and prosper.

Mutt and Jeff - honestly, it's like watching a comedy when these two are shown. And I agree, the Sweaty Look Award definitely goes to Ale. Sorry JL. You lose again.

Tomorrow...Ale on a horse. Prep the freeze frame button.

Daisynjay

Eli, this recap is fabulous. Your writing style is so colorful and wry that I have to admit that I've got a touch of pencil envy.

I'm seeing some very disturbing inconsistencies in these characters and the way they are being portrayed. I thought that Alejandro is guilt-ridden for having raped Montserrat but now when she complains about being María moving in, he tells her that she has to earn the rights of being his wife sleeping with him one night doesn't give her that right. What?

I'm still wondering why she hasn't called the police on this rapist.

And Juventino suggests to María that they off Montserrat and she suddenly turns into a murderous vixen? He even suggested that he might be able to arrange for her to meet the same fate as her father? And she's not suspicious? She may be a jealous conniver, but she is not stupid. Please.

Carlos

Wow Eli, you were on fire with this one. Sizzling and scintillating, right out of the block.

Agree with all the great lines cited but have a special love for:

Once they arrive at their destination they find that it's actually really hard to find someone in a city, they get more doors slammed on them more than a Jehovah's witness does on a Saturday morning.

I never had the heart to be rude to Jehovah's Witnesses and know where it got me? they kept bringing around the newbies so they could practice on a willing subject. That got old very quickly. But they ARE good, well-intentioned people. I did a series on local churches when I lived in Pa. and was amazed at how good children were during the services and how gently parents calmed them if they got restless. And everybody in the congregation cleaned and maintained the church. There was no janitor!

Looking forward to watching this. Lately Univision/com has been rather slow in getting the latest chapter up and running. Grrrrr

Carlos:

Maria has her head in the clouds as far as Ale is concerned. She just wants to get rid of Montse, and damn the consequences. She is stuck on stupid right now. I'm not excusing what she is doing, but she can't see the forest for the trees. Let's hope she wakes up, but I'm not counting on it.

I forgot to mention Mutt and Jeff, as Julia said yesterday, why didn't they just Google or Bing property records for Ale? They know his last name right? They could have saved themselves lots of trouble. I had to laugh when JL says he'll knock on every door in town to find Montse and Eli was spot on with her Jehovah witness remark. I think it was NovelaMaven yesterday that said the brain is creaking and squealing from too much overuse, lol.

Judy, Thank you for sharing your experiences with Jehovah's Witnesses. You are so kind, I know you listened patiently! I'm sure your series was interesting and informative. Everyone in the congregation pitches in to help clean. Great idea!

Carlos: you raise excellent questions about character inconsistencies and absurdness about this storyline in general. Loved "pencil envy".

Diana

Eli:

This recap is an absolute hoot. You sure have a way of telling a story and not holding back your feelings. Excellent!

María doesn't seem to be too grief-stricken about her father's death, does she? (for contrast -- remember how weepy/whiny she was when Alejo was away from the hacienda?)

And yes, the rape is being ignored or trivialized as just another instance of
mutual misunderstanding --> rejection --> resentment.

Consider:

1. Yesterday, Alejandro told Montse she was the lady of the house and could set things up the way she wanted them.

She rebuffed him and said "I AM NOT THE LADY OF THE HOUSE.'

2. Subsequently, Alejandro takes her at her word, tells María she can continue to manage his household just as she has done all along.

3. Today, Montse objects to Alejandro bringing María into HER house (and invites Rosario to live with them too) and Alejandro retorts that she has nothing to say about the way the house is run. (see above). [And then he adds -- just to be nasty -- that one night hasn't earned her that right.]

4. Even though Montse is shown to be softening and growing interested in her surroundings, Alejandro's insult pushes her buttons and makes her vulnerable to María's "exit strategy."

I'd be worried about Montse if I didn't know she had a lock on the run of the novela.

And in the meantime, I have become oddly uncomfortable in the Produce Department. The potatoes have eyes...

I literally laughed out loud at" "And in the meantime, I have become oddly uncomfortable in the Produce Department. The potatoes have eyes". Thanks NovelaMaven.

At least we are having fun with the food.

Diana

thanks, Eli, for a fabulous recap. I missed the first fifteen minutes.

it is interesting that Rosario was introduced into the story in a different way in AR. On the trip to the hacienda, Matilde tried to escape. She asked a guy in a wagon for a ride , and Rosario tried to convince him to help her. when Manuel walked up, hewas furious at both if them and pushed them both around (not knowing that R. Was his mother. ) I think this actress is doing a great job. She was also wonderful as that aunt, but this role is bigger. Ana Martin played Rosario in AR.

Another difference is that the housekeeper Antonia did not have an uncle as a conspirator. instead, after her father, the overseer was killed, she asked Manuel if she could ask her Nana, her old babysitter to come to the hacienda. The actress has since died, but she was fantastic as a schemer who tutored Antonia on Howe to seduce her boss. she must have been a madam in as bordella awhile because she knew lot about seducing men.

As in this novela, the padre was not happy about Manuel moving the young housekeeper into the main house.

As in this version, Matilde and Rosario struck a close bond immediately. it made more sense in AR because Rosario had met and helped Matilde earlier hen she was trying to escaped from Manuel? Manuel did not want to hired Rosario for this reason,

My experience with Jehova witnesses has been rather nasty - when I was a child they used to follow me all the way to school, to "teach" me about Jesus and stuff.
I do have a friend whose parents were JW and he told me some not so freaky stories (kind of like the ones Judy mentioned).

Vivi, Urban, I think that as long as she absolutely HAS to live at the ranch, Montse doesn't mind having an occupation - isn't what she offered to do like charity work - the Telenovela Ranch Edition?
But as soon as an opportunity appears to get away, she can't say no, because she still hates the place and she's not such a goody two shoes after all (which is refreshing, having her say that she no longer wants to leave because she wants to help the poor would have been unrealistic).

Wow. Just watched this. Cried right along with Rosario. Yes, this actress is fabulous. I loved her as the good-hearted aunt in Amor Real, and as the rotten conniving aunt in La Que No Podia Amar--this gal can act her socks off, regardless of the role.

But...full confession...I also cried when Montserrat hugged and kissed the baby. I'm a total sucker for infants.

And of course was already in Mom-Dad-please-don't-fight-mode when Alejandro and Montserrat seemed to be getting along. Such a sucker for happy endings!...and this one is still a long way off.

Thanks again, Eli...if you've given Carlos "pencil envy", you're batting a thousand.

Carlos..HA.."pencil envy."

Novelamaven...HA.."the potatoes have eyes". You guys !!!

Another difference between this version and AR is that Manuel was the one who broke the news to Matilde that he was a bastard. She noticed a portrait of a woman on the wall and asked if it was his mother. He smirked and told her that his mother had never been inside this grand house and that he was a bastard.

I have two stories about Jehovah Witnesses. One is that I remember my mother telling me that after her brother committed suicude, my grandmother was comforted when they came to the house to talk to her. Second, I had a very outgoing student from Puerto Rico named Candy. When my students had a surprise party for me on my birthday, I was surprised to find her sitting outside the room. She seemed sad and embarrassed to tell me that she was a JW and was not supposed to celebrate birthdays. She is the same student who had a friend dress up in a white suit to deliver flowers to me in our classroom....not on my birthday, by the way. She told me that she told her family to give her flowers while she was alive, not at her funeral. isn't it amazing the subjects we discuss while watching and commenting on telenovelas .

Yess...I'm loving all these stories. Here we are in the "virtual family room" again, discussing the show we just watched, and then zigzagging off to other subjects. Much fun.

Thank you guys for all your kind words, it makes staying up till 3:30 worth it!

I was thinking about Jose Luis and realized that he is as much to blame for this situation as Graciela is, had he been a true galan he would have done what Montse asked him to do a zillion times-talk to her dad and let him know that they loved each other. Lauro would never have allowed his daughter to marry Alejandro knowing that her heart belonged to someone else.

I felt okay doing the JW joke because I was a witness, I'm now what they call inactive and have been for ten years.

"The potatoes have eyes" made me LOL like a crazy person this morning!

Eli.....Thanks for the explanation of "junior"...so basically, we are talking about a guy like Dimwit, right ? Around here, people used to call guys named after their fathers "Junior," as a nickname, and most of the guys hated that name.

Eli...After reading your comments about what Rosario should have said to the pompous Maria, I think that YOU could do a great job of putting that girl in her place ! Well said.

Susanlynn, let me just tell you I was so,so ready to tell Maria off, but found that Montse did a good job of that herself, she wont be pushed around by Maria and AB did a wonderful job in the last scene they had together.

Thanks, Eli! Excellent recap.

They certainly went overboard with the "Ale is so generous and everyone in the community LOVES him!!!!!" after the previous night's events, didn't they? I hope he ups those people's pay immediately. Hard working employees and their children should not be living like that.

I think Montserrat's mind is in chaos and she doesn't really know what to do. She wants to help the community, but she wants to leave. She hates Alejandro, but she also kind of likes him. She's uncomfortable at the hacienda, but where else will she go? Back to her horrid mama? I hope Ale takes Padre's advice and they have a good long chat. I was agog when he said she hadn't earned wifely rights. You didn't earn the husbandly privileges you claimed, chump! The aftermath does seem like we aren't supposed to be thinking of their encounter as so rapey as it seemed. Why? How?

Meanwhile, hapless JL and his incredibly stupid plan. I do enjoy Refugio's frustration with them. At least they gave us a nice scenic view of Morelia. I hope their Brokeback Mountain phase lasts awhile so Money and Ale can work out some of their issues.

I was thinking it would be a grapefruit that does Juvie in, because grapefruit are evil...but getting rid of him would be a GOOD thing, so maybe not. I definitely do not want to see him molest a banana.

Maria's a moron. Getting rid of Money won't make Ale any more into her. Of course, since this is a telenovela, he will probably cave and get together with Maria at some point, without loving her, because if you can't be with the one you love, apparently you just hook up with whatever harpy pounces first.

Eli...I am so sorry that you had to stay up so late to do the recap. You really went above and beyond the call of duty. your recaps are always clever and full of humor. thank you for the smiles and giggles they give me.I am grateful to all our wonderful recappers for all the time and effort that they put into recapping the novela.

Ot..My personal telenovela continues. Tomorrow is the custody hearing. He wants them every other week instead of every other weekend. I would be so grateful for any good vibrations you could send out for a good result for my granddaughters and daughter. They are sweet children who do not deserve a change that would only make life more stressful to them. I am hoping that some positive , good energy sent out into the universe could help them. I am very worried. Life, and the courts, can be unfair, just like in our novelas. Thanks.

Julia:

I'm with you about Monse's state of mind. You put down exactly what I thought. She is very conflicted, poor thing. I too wonder where she would go? I'm hoping she is setting Maria up for helping her and getting Maria in heaps of trouble.

Susanlynn:

Sending you much good thoughts and vibes that everything works out for your daughter and granddaughters.

Eli, a belated but huge THANK YOU (sorry for yelling) to this most amazing recap. You have a terrific writing style, and your voice is so amusing, astute and engaging I felt like you were sitting right next to me telling me a story.

I love how you went off on Maria. Yikes, her character really derailed last night. She is totally unsympathetic at the moment...rude to poor old ladies and plotting to kill Monse. It's too much!

Your dissertations on fruits put me right off my orange this morning. I had to go with toast and peanut butter, hee. Great comments on watermelon. And NovelaMaven's crack about potatoes is too, too funny!

Eli, thank you for reminding us that Monse is only 19 and is in a rather wretched situation. It made me feel for her, and I can forgive her for making some bad decisions. I loved how she treated Rosario, and I hope they can build a friendship. I like how she is, knowingly or not, building up a strong support base for herself. Padre, Rosario, and Tia Carlota could be a unified force to be reckoned with. Can't wait.

Carlos, "pencil envy", brilliant.

Thanks again Eli. You're the best.

Susanlynn, I am going to spend some time today thinking hard about the upcoming hearing and sending very positive and victorious thoughts your way. How fortunate for your daughter that she has you in her corner, helping her to be strong and knowing she can count on you no matter what.

Eli, this was brilliant! Thank you! I didn't watch the epi - I'm still disgusted with the rape, and... I don't have a beanie tight enough to buy this..."I'm trapped and I can't get away" thing that Montse is playing. Besides.. the recap is better!

Juvie and the fruit... He is SO disgusting. From the beginning with his fruit/food consumption he has made me sick!

Btw, the gay vibe was there, in the river... very funny. And, I have to say, I appreciated the eye candy, those two both have great bods (blush)
thanks again, Ana

Ooops! Posted on the wrong day! Thanks Diana! And Adriana Noel, I seriously wonder if the writers sometimes test the audience for a serious gay storyline. Maybe there's been one and I missed it. You know, someone who's not a stereotypical clown like Luigi in LFMB (though I kinda liked Luigi). Refugio and JL have really had more tender moments than anyone on the show! And just before they dunked in the watering hole JL seemed to be checkin' Refugio out! It's a real bromance and maybe they're (the writers) testing the waters?

As for ignoring the rape, maybe we're left to conclude that what we didn't see was less objectionable than we imagined? Maybe she responded, thus the "how was it for you?" question. Seems Montse and the writers have moved on.

My children had the most wonderful, loving, attentive caretakers ever from birth to about 5 years old. Both daycare home providers were JW and I am forever grateful to them. My daughter (now 28) is FB friends with one of these wonderful ladies!

((((((((Susanlynn)))))))) Love, prayers and good vibrations to you, your daughter and grandbabies!

Lila

Susanlynn: Sending hugs and prayers to you and your family in fervent hope the right decisions are made. Bless you, your daughter and grandchildren. Wishing all of you strength and hope.

Diana

Oh, forgot to say that not once in over 6 years and seeing them 5 days a week did they ever try to convert me or examine my religious beliefs in any way. Very professional yet warm and wonderful with the kids.

Lila

It seems like most of the gay characters are stereotypes added for color, but there have been a few serious ones who weren't just there for comedy. In the very first telenovela I watched, Amar Sin Limites, Arnoldo and Julio were normal characters. They even had a civil union ceremony (no passionate kisses shown). It seems like there have been more like that in more recent shows but I can't think of any offhand.

It would be surprising for JL and Ref, because they've both been passionately into women, and it would be improbable for both of them to happen to be bisexual, but they have had a fairly cozy vibe the last few episodes. I'm guessing they'll just be good friends who are more comfortable with closeness and affection than we usually see.

Susanlynn, I'll be thinking of you and sending positive energy your way.

Susanlynn...we will all come alongside to send prayers for the best possible outcome to this court hearing. It sounds like your daughter is having to contend with so many heartbreaking challenges in this divorce and custody dispute. But she has a strong support in you and your husband and you will see her through (and the children through) no matter what.

Eli: Add me to the admiration society. Great recap.

The actress playing Maria did a great job in that scene where she was considering what her uncle said. That little half smile was just so evil. And when she turned around with that “conflicted” look telling her uncle to do what he wanted.

Took my comment about Mons being conflicted out of this because Julia said it so much better.

Maybe we’ll find in a flashback that Mons became willing once Ale started. That would explain her not acting more upset about it.

I like how sweet Mons was to Dom.

I thought the same thing about Rosario overhearing Mons ask Dom to get her clothes and shoes. I think the writers had Rosario overhearing so that she would see Mons’ goodness--a contrast to Maria’s witchiness.

Hated Maria on the bed. Arrogant B***h!

Loved how excited Padre A was to tell Rosario that Mons was Ale’s esposa, not his novia. He was so cute.

Susanlynn: sending out positive vibes in the Universe that all works out for your daughter and granddaughters.

Nanette

Nanette, I am really hoping for that flashback. It would explain things and help Ale to regain his galán status. In fact, I think I might choose to believe that is what happened unless we are definitively told otherwise.

Susanlynn,I hope the best for your daughter! Hopefully things will work out for the best!

((((((HUGS!)))), Susanlynn. :)

I am going to guess that the sex we didn't see was something like what happened with Rhett and Scarlett. Monserrat doesn't have a lot of experience and may have found any positive response confusing and/or disturbing in this situation.

She isn't likely to have betrayed any pleasure to him when she was determined to make this as vile an experience for him as she could.

A most excellent and entertaining recap, Eli. Thanks for all the fun details and the snark. So many great comments, including "the potatoes have eyes." It's going to be difficult to ever look upon fruit in the same innocent way.

Rosario is doing a wonderful and heart rending job in this role. So nice to see her as a good person instead of annoying or evil.

Susanlynn, sending positive thoughts and prayers for your daughter's court hearing and a good outcome.

I understand Rosario's nervousness, but I think the longer she waits, the more upset Ale is going to be that she didn't say anything before. I wish she would listen to Padre. Ale was very poor himself until just recently, and she now has first-hand evidence that his fancy wife is at least considerate (although I thought Montserrat should have actually introduced herself and taken a few moments to talk with Rosario). I'm not sure why she's so concerned about fitting in among high society. It isn't like she would have to socialize with others to have a relationship with Ale, and it also doesn't seem like there's a lot of high society anyway in this rural area around the hacienda.

Urban, I choose to believe the same as you about the unseen sex, because Montse is acting the same way now as she did before. You take out those 5 minutes out and you don't lose anything when it comes to teh way their relationship is evolving.
I DO hope we get some flashbacks of that night down the line, when Montse is more willing to aknowledge that Ale might not be the devil after all.

Susanlynn - lots of positive thoughts flying towards your family all the way from Europe; God willing, the nightmare will be over soon.

I think Rosario is filled with misplaced shame: shame at being raped, at bearing a child out of wedlock, at being sent to prison. The shame is overriding everything.

Nannet, I think you hit the nail on the head.

Julia:

Rosario has to hold back to allow Alejandro maximal opportunity to behave like an ass. (He has already made a good head start by insisting that Rosario live with the other servants even after Padre Anselmo asked him to take special care with her).

Later, this will allow for a satisfactory amount of gnashing of teeth and clenching of jaws -- not to mention beating of breasts -- when Alejandro finally realizes it is his own mother he has shut out of the big house.

Yes, perfect setup for Alejandro to make serious amends later on, NovelaMaven.

But in the meantime, given Rosario's frame of mind, I think she will be far more comfortable in the servant's quarters than the big house. And hopefully more privy to the chisme about who's untrustworthy and up to no good.

Eli, thanks so much for the recap. There were so many fabulous lines, but one of my favorites was, "He then leaves to go do manly work." And I too agree that Ale looks sexy when he was sweating, unlike JL that just looks dirty and smelly.

I loved the scenes with Montse and Ale at the community. I think they are going to get to know each other and really fall for each other. It seems as though other characters will be the storytellers for Ale and Montse finding out each others stories. The start of that was Maria telling Montse about Ale's background, and I was so happy to see that she did not care that he grew up poor. Once Ale finds out that Montse did not care about his up-bringing, he will see that she is not money-hungry like Graceless.

Nanette, UA & Julia: ITA with you about the sex between Ale and Montse. Maybe it was like "Gone With the Wind". Hopefully there will be a flashback, or at some mention of it. If tia Carlotta comes for a visit, perhaps Montse will discuss it with her. I also choose to believe your version Julia, unless told otherwise.

I am really NOT liking Maria right now. She basically told her uncle to have his way with Montse. If Ale ever finds out, goodbye friendship. I guess she's done mourning for her father; that was quick! I also like Rosario, but I fear that if she waits too long, Ale will find out from someone else that she is his mother, and they will turn it around and make her out to be a bad person. Maria perhaps. I could not believe how she treated Rosario in the kitchen. I can't stand her. ShutUpMaria!

So much more to say, too little time. I just wanted to say that I really enjoy all the recaps, and all the comments and discussions. I look forward to them everyday!

Susanlynn: Sending positive thoughts and prayers your way!

Back to work...hasta pronto!

I think that if Montse hadn't opened her mouth to rile Ale about Maria moving in, he would have gladly agreed to do as the padre asked and let Rosario stay in the house. Seems to be a war of wills at the moment.

Dumb and Dumber are really the dumbest! They are told that Montse was taken to Michoacan, nothing else, and they decide (well, JL decides) that they can find her just like that. Forget the fact that Michoacan is a whole state and that they don't know what city or even the region the newlyweds were headed for. They (he) are just going to knock on every single door in the whole state and JL will be with his Blondie tonight! Ookaayy!

AuntyAnn: I don't recall having seen you commenting on the, admittedly few, TNs that I've watched so far. I wanted to say that I'm really enjoying your comments.

Darn!! I keep forgetting to ask what the theme song is.

There isn't even any method to JL's needle-in-a-haystack search. He knows Alejandro owns a hacienda. Why not ask at places that would do business with farm and ranch people? Or, you know, at the government office in charge of land records? Nah, just knock on everyone's door and ask random folks in the city plazas. You'll find her by dinnertime for sure.

I kept wondering how he was describing Ale and Monse. I kept seeing him use his hands to measure. "I'm looking for this tiny blonde chick. She's always overdressed. Purses her lips a lot. Sometimes kicks up her leg when she's being kissed..."

"...and she's with this guy, tallish and blond, some people would say he's handsome, I guess, though obviously he is not as handsome and manly as me, and, um, overdeveloped pecs and a tendency to air-chew when he's stressed? Seen them?"

Sometimes it seems as if those two are the "comedy relief" of this TN.

Vivi, Julia, you both nailed your descriptions! :))

Nanette, they do crack me up. Everytime I see them all I can think about is "what are these bozos doing now and how is the Caray gang going to make fun of them because of it".

They kind of remind me of a cartoon called 2 Stupid Dogs (don't know how many of you know what I'm talking about). Wikipedia describes the show as the story of two, not very intelligent dogs, and their everyday misadventures.
Sound familiar?

Aunty Ann, "ShutUpMaria!", amen sister!

Adriana Noel, 2 Stupid Dogs, you nailed it.

Nanette, I was getting the comic relief vibe too. Didn't they go to Morelia? Isn't Morelia about 1400 miles from Campeche/Agua Azul? There's gotta be a better way to look for someone than to travel for days and knock on doors. I got a good laugh out of that. Great descriptions from Julia and Vivi, very funny.

Is anyone besides me --or has it been mentioned already--finds some strange, cultural 'black magic" happening--when Tio first combs his hair and then, using the same comb without cleaning it, touches at the roots of his niece's hair while filling her head with murderous nonsense.

Anon, I'm not sure what you mean by cultural black magic. It has not occurred to me that Juvie is using any sort of supernatural machinations to manipulate Maria (if that is what you mean). I just think they have a very weird relationship. They are too close and huggy for my comfort. I think his combing her hair and using the same comb on Maria is creepily intimate and inappropriate. As with many families, I think he knows which buttons of hers he can push to get the desired result. The fact that she agreed to set up Monse to be KILLED by her uncle is appalling to me. If I were Maria I would wonder why my uncle finds it so easy to talk about killing someone. I would wonder if he has anything to do with any other murders, such as the murder of her own father. But Maria doesn't seem at all bothered by her uncle's bad actions or smarmy attitude. She doesn't even seem to think there is anything wrong with his behavior.

Nanette: I totally enjoy your comments as well. This is the second TN I have been commenting on. The first was La Tempestad. I found this blog when I started researching why LT was being chopped in the editing room. Damn you Uni! Don't get me started on that.

OMG, all you guys are cracking me up. First with your comments about how dumb and dumber are looking for Montse, then the description of Montse. LOL! I could totally hear them saying those words along with their hand gestures.

2 Stupid Dogs is a perfect title, goes perfect with the way they look, sweaty and stinky!

I meant his combing HIS hair and using the same comb on Maria...

Nanette:

The theme song is
"El Perdedor" Sung by Enrique Iglesias and Marco Antonio Solis.

The ending credits song is:
"La Fuerza del Amor" Sung by Aleks Syntek

This comment has been removed by the author.

And let's not forget Ren & Stimpy, another cartoon about two idiots and their adventures (why are there so many shows for kids with this type of subject???)

Refu & Stinky ???

Adriana Noel, Refu and Stinky...bwahahhaaaa!

Late to the party. Eli, thanks for the recap!
