Mentir Para Vivir #44 Fri 12/6/13 Making An Offer He CAN Refuse

Capítulo 44

Lo De Antes:

Lila receives a phone call from Inspector Gadget telling her that baby brother Berto has bought it, and she breaks down.  (Berto may have been a lazy good-for-nothing, irresponsible slug of a brother, but he was blood and he was her lazy, good-for-nothing, irresponsible slug, and blood is blood.)  She’s due at the police station for questioning and to identify the body.

Ricardo got Oriana’s new cell number from Paloma and called her at Fortress de los Falcón (OMG, Ft. Knox has nothing on this place!)  He wanted her to know there are new developments that he needs to discuss with her but that cannot be discussed over the phone; he suggested they meet at Mariano’s and not to worry about the PI since he’s gotten a different car as of that morning.  Unfortunately, Jose Luis’s showing up at her locked bedroom door wanting to speak with her has cut the call short. And, in an unusually demeaning and pathetic show of weakness, hunky hubby JL tearfully crawls up next to his frightened, cowering wife after swearing he’d never force her against her will to sleep with him, and begs her to allow him just one night by her side.

Lo De Despues:

Oriana shivers under her sheets, which she’s now pulled up to her neck, and refuses the hubster any kind of matrimonial mattress privileges.  (I’d say time to pull back out the old black book, amigo mío.)

At the same time, our Margaret-Keane-urchin-model-all-growed-up de Marilu visits with Ric to see what’s up since he’s not visited her and Fidelia for a while.  He gives her the lowdown on what’s been happening uptown: that among other things, Berto was shot to death in his hotel room for who knows what reason, that he’s got to see a judge the next day over Lila’s rightful demand to redivvy Daddy Gabe’s shares of Aresti Company stock, since publication of the news that Sebastian is not his Daddy’s bastard son after all, and that neither he nor Piero are either, tho’ he won’t go into why that is important at this point.

As for Ines, she’s gone back to her hubby and left him all alone to pick up the pieces of his life.  Ric looks nostalgically over at her and opines.  “—Too bad our relationship never worked.”  Marilu agrees.  She’s truly sorry for what Ines and he have lost and truly admires the woman.  She’d wanted to tell her that it’s rare to find a decent woman and that she’s thankful for the decent way 2nes has always treated her, considering, despite Marilu and Ric’s romantic past having passed.  Marilu’s resigned to taking up the role of kid sis.  “—Lastima.”

Meanwhile, Oriana plays a petrified possum to perfection as pitiful Jose Luis whispers in her ear that he’d give his life if she would just still love him like she’d once done.  Of course, with this wifely show of in-grattitude, he’s probably figured it’s lucky he still hasn’t crossed out Raquel’s number after all.   He leaves broken hearted and totally disillusioned; she cries pitifully, and then races to lock her bedroom door once she’s certain he’s gone and cannot hear.

Across town at the hospital, Felipe seems to be responding to treatment.  Happy, happy!  Joy, joy!  Though he may have temporary mental gaps [lagunas mentales], he should be back to normal in very little time, says the doc.  Lucina tells his wife she’ll handle all the medical expenses not stopping once to wonder where all the cash for that is going to come from considering she’s only got 2 guests and it’s questionable if she’s even been charging them.  Cesar stays with Felipe’s wife to counsel her like any novitiate wannabe should, and Lucina returns to the B&B.

Lila, The Black Widow, has come to police headquarters to identify the body.  Lucina’s cop buddy, Manalo is present during the questioning.   He listens with silent skepticism while Lila lays the blame for Berto’s death on Lucina and Ric.  Lucina, she tells Insp. Gadget, was her husband’s lover and has always hated her.  She’s sure the woman killed him.  Or, maybe it was Ric Sanchez Breton, she adds, over the shares of stock Ric’s bastard son inherited and that she’s now suing Ric for, since they all now know Seb wasn’t the bastard son of her dead hubby’s after all.

Gadget brings up Gabe’s murder and Lila, a smart enough cookie to avoid guilt by association as co conspirator/instigator, aptly throws the blame to Oriana Caligaris, Lucina’s friend and fugitive from justice in Columbia, whom she managed to spirit out of the place to avoid being caught by the police and sent back to Columbia over that other crime she was wanted for.  She turns to Manolo.  “—You tell him!  You know all about it!”  Cara de cool, composed, and cautious cop de unsuspecting Manolo.

Manolo and Insp. Gadget discuss Lila’s statement a bit later over beer and snacks at a nearby restaurant.  Mano tells Gadget that he doesn’t believe any of the three Lila Martin named had anything at all to do with her husband’s murder, though for a while he suspected Oriana Caligaris and then discarded the idea, believing instead that she fled to avoid something else, that being whatever happened in Colombia.

The next morning Ric calls to make sure he gets a chance to see Oriana and to catch up on everything that’s been going on.  JL’s waiting for her so they can have a bit of “family time” with Alina.  They agree to meet in the afternoon at the rectory.

Fabiola learns from Paloma that her mother and she fought the day before and that Mathilde plans to move out soon.  Fabi agrees to stay with Paloma despite that.

Meanwhile, Mad Hilde badgers a real estate agent to find her a modest house to buy.  He seems unable to find her anything other than in a barrio.  FF>>

Paloma asks Fabi to find Francisco Castro’s phone number for her.

A bit later, while los Falcón are spending time at the boardwalk, JL takes a call from Paloma for a secret meeting at her manse later that day.

That afternoon, the judge finds for Lila Martin and orders the redivision of Gabe’s company stock, cutting Sebastardo out of the mix.   Ric keeps mum about the DNA results so there’s less hassle involved, despite his attorney’s advice to the contrary.  Mad Hilde isn’t going to have a part in that stock and so Ric tells her to take the shares that her aunt was kind enough to have already given her—ones she clearly didn’t deserve to receive, he adds, and leave it at that.  (Ouch!)  Madhilde sneers back at him.

Once that meeting’s over, Ric informs his lawyer that he’s got to give a statement to the police about Lila Martin’s brother’s apparent murder.  The lawyer asks if he’s involved.  “”—Absolutely not!”  [en absoluto].  Meanwhile, he wants the guy to find out what’s been going on in Colombia regarding progress with the Caligaris case.

At the boardwalk, Oriana watches wistfully at how well JL is once again getting along with Alina.  (Fashion Police Alert!)  JL and Oriana later discuss Paloma’s emotional and physical strength.  He asks how she took the news of her not being True-nes and why she still cares about her like true family.  Oriana explains the docter giving a sedative and such, and that she now feels like a coward for what she did, tho’ it was ony to find some sort of refuge for her and Alina when the police were searching high and low for them.

JL declares she’s not a coward, and if she left Paloma it might have been because of shame and embarrassment but not out of cowardice.  He tells Oriana that he understands that she hates him because of all she’s had to go through.  She corrects him.  She doesn’t hate him, she explains.  What she hates is how he put himself and his family in danger because of what he did.  He promises he’s seen the light and it will all be over soon, just as soon as he’s done what they’ve asked him to do.  They’ll go somewhere very far away then where names won’t matter, he adds.

Oriana brings JL down off his cloud.  “--But what about Alina?  What name is she going to have to register with at the next school?”   His answer is that names and false passports can be bought anywhere.  And what about Paloma, Oriana asks?  Paloma?  As for that old woman, Oriana did nothing more than to oblige in making the old woman happy for a few months.  Surely she realized that that couldn’t last and Oriana needs to resign herself to that fact!  (Yeesh!  What I can’t resign myself to is how she considers walking along a wooden boardwalk in 6 inch CFM heels and a suitable-for –the office-dress while JL is in baggy shorts and flip-flops!  Couldn’t costuming’s budget manage a practical pair of espadrilles and spaghetti-strapped sundresses?)

Ric arrives at the police station to give his statement.  He tells them how he knew Berto and how he tried blackmailing 2nes over a non-existent love affair.  Gadget asks him about the business with Sebastian’s being his bastard son.  Ric tells him that it has no bearing on this case but informs him that he now has DNA tests proving he’s not his son (ergo, he didn’t rape Seb’s mama).   Gadget wants also to make sure that Ric plans to give Lila Martin her remaining portion of the disputed stock.  Ric assures him it is not an issue any longer and is allowed to leave.

Depite Mano’s saying it’s evident that Ric had nothing to do with Berto’s murder, Gadget thinks that Ric may have killed the guy over another attempt at blackmail.  No way, says Mano, he and Paloma Aresti are rolling in dough [forrado de lana] and would have paid him off instead without a second thought.  Best to open up a different line of questioning and find another reason nothing was stolen out of the guy’s room.  Certainly, when Felipe regains consciousness, they can ask him what happened and proceed from there.

Ric checks in with his new lawyer and learns that a second police auditor has now determined that Oriana’s signature on the illegal bank account was falsified.  The lawyer once again tries reasoning with Ric to tell the truth about his not being Seb’s baby-daddy, but Ric stubbornly says Forget it!  There’s too much familial hassle involved and his mother already told Sebastardo the truth, anyway.

Back at Fortress Falcón, JL leaves for his secret meet with Dona Paloma.

Alina tells Oriana what a great time she had with her daddy now that he seems to love Tito.  Happy, happy!  Joy, joy!  FF>>>>

During their meeting, Paloma makes it clear she knows that Fakecisco is really Jose Luis Falcon, that she still considers “Ines and Lina” her family,  that he’s forced her granddaughter, Ines—the name she still prefers to call her—to return to live with him and that she’s not happy living there.   Therefore, she continues, she is willing to offer him ten million bucks American  in exchange for his letting them free.  She cares too much about her granddaughter’s and Lina’s happiness not to.

JL finally admits he made a mistake, owing to greed and what he felt would be an easy way to provide the good life for his family-- a first for JL with this admission.  However, he’s learned his lesson and has mended his ways.  He therefore has no intention of being separated from his family again.  He loves them too much.  He’s there to reclaim his family, period.   She says nobody who loved Ines that much would have involved her in his dirty dealings.  He informs her that the Colombian mess has since been cleaned up.  Paloma knows at what price and insists that with all the baggage he’s brought to it, the reconciliation is certain to fail.  That aside, his wife loved him, and she must still have feelings for him.  Not necessarily, Paloma counters.

No amount of money, JL emphasizes with a sincere look on his face, could separate him from his family again.  Paloma insists it’s her family also, but he points out to Paloma that her family is merely an imaginary one while his is the real thing.   He and Oriana have years together and a real past.   Where there’s smoke there’s usually fire he tells her [lit., where there are ashes, cinders remain].  He is sure his wife still loves him, so, though Paloma’s offer is extremely tempting, he’s not taking the deal.

While Jose Luis’s new guard-dog PI spies on Oriana, she and Ricardo meet up secretly at the rectory with Piero and Mariano to chew on the latest news about the people they know and those they wished they didn’t.

Firstly, the Colombian lawyer confirmed that the charges have been dropped against her due to the new auditor determining her signature to have been falsified.  “—So he was telling me the truth then!”  Yes, says Ric and we both know why—but she stops him in mid-sentence and tells him it’s neither the time nor the place to bring that up.  Ric walks off in disgust, duly chastened.  Mariano steps in.  Secondly, regarding Berto Martin’s death, they figure he was murdered to get their hands on the pistols; and luckily Lucina found they only managed to get hold of one of them.  Oriana is lost.  She doesn’t understand what he’s getting at.

Ric was smart enough to switch cars for one the PI doesn’t recognize and he's able to continue explaining while under the radar at the rectory.  He says they’re talking about the two pistols involved in his fathery’s murder:  Berto’s .44 that was certainly the murder weapon and the smaller one that Lina found and was holding when his father was shot.  He explains how Marilu was tricked into telling Berto where Ric lived so that Berto, who had found them in the fridge, had come looking for them in Ric’s bungalow.  He probably sneaked in and, if Celio was looking to protect himself he’d probably gone to open the fridge to arm himself with one of them but then Berto knocked him out and found them in there and took them instead.

Mariano adds that now they need to figure out who’d have an interest in stealing back that gun.  Ric explains that Lucina was going to take the two of them to Mano to explain how and why they could prove Oriana and Alina’s innocence in his daddy’s murder and that then she’d be free again. (Come on, Oriana!  You're supposed to be a math and puzzle whiz!  figure it out!)  Oriana reminds him and Ric that there’s still the false identity issue to deal with.

Back at the B&B, meanwhile, Raqi unhappily eavesdrops from the doorway as Lucina finally has a chance to tell the story to Manolo.  He tells her he can’t assure her she and the others will not go to jail.  Then find out what really happened at least before officially reporting what she’s just told him, she begs.   They come to the conclusion that it was Berto who really shot Gabe to share part of his sister’s inheritance and that somebody killed him to get hold of that gun.  They agree that the “who and why” are what Mano’s got to find out first.  However, Mano tells her, he still suspects she’s still not told him all there is.  And, of course he’s right, since she still pretends not to know where Oriana and Alina have gone nor to have heard hide nor hair of them since they ran away.   Mano tells her to at least fetch him the smaller pistol so he’s got it as proof it wasn’t the murder weapon.

Meanwhile, on an ever more personal note, Ric returns the question of Them vs. Him.  He tells Oriana that she’s always seemed to be such a strong, self-sufficient, intelligent woman with the ability to always overcome whatever adversity comes along, and so, he cannot understand why she agreed to return to her husband.  She winds up the ol’ Victrola with that scratched record of hers and puts the needle on:   “--If you had a child you’d understand.  Alina loved the time spent with her father.”  “—And you?  Did you enjoy it also?”  She admits she doesn’t know.  (Ric suspects, just like Viewerville, that there are still a few burning cinders hidden in the hubster ash pile.)  Then, if she’s so unhappy, why not escape?  He owns a house he put in his aunt’s name that she can use to hide in.  She cannot make up her mind.

Jose Luis checks in with his PI to find out where his wife is and if her boyfriend is with her.   That guy’s car isn’t there and whoever left the rectory was not him.  What the hell, he asks himself, could she be doing there that long!

JL’s green-eyed monster has just lost another one against Sr. Principe Azul, and still angry, he loses patience again with Alina who’s just asked for him to watch some of the videos he just bought with her.  He screams at her for always bringing that darned dog with her everywhere she goes.  Lina suffers another trauma from the scream fest and mopes as she heads back upstairs with El Tito.

At the same time, Ric is pleading with Oriana to take his feelings into consideration.  He can’t eat or sleep now, knowing she’s with “him.”  Can’t she remember what a beautiful thing they had going together not so long ago?  Suddenly her phone rings.  He begs her not to answer it, but she does.  It’s Hubby calling to give her grief for taking so long at the priest’s.   He demands she come home ASAP or else.  Oriana doesn’t want to deal with the "or else", so she tells Ric she’s got to leave right away.  He tearfully tells her he’ll be with her no matter what or how long.  However, if he has to, he warns her, he can destroy the other man in a single instant. Doesn’t she still love him?  Oriana answers him with another farewell kiss and as a swell of elfin musicians play corny Fifty’s potted plant melodies in the background.

Jose Luis has started drinking heavily while he’s had to wait for Oriana to return.  He screams at her again for taking so long and starts getting rough with her.  Tito recognizes the danger and runs up to him to take a chunk out of his ankles.  Reflexively, JL punts the dog twenty feet into the air to his wife and daughter’s—not to mention, Viewerville’s—everlasting revulsion and horror.  As Tito hits the ground with a thump, the servants are undoubtedly taking bets as how long the carpenters will take to revamp Tito's doghouse to accommodate their boss's large size, since it looks like Tito won't be needing it any longer....

Thanks, Jardinera. Another great episode.

I love the way the writers have handled JL, making him ALMOST redeemable at many key points, then pulling the rug out from under the good JL with some bad behavior -- often associated with that very well-behaved dog Tito! Well done by the handsome DO, too.

I was liking Ricardo more last night, as he juggled his many legal battles, trying to do the right thing throughout. Lila certainly didn't let her grief for her brother interfere with her interest in the moolah.

I love it that the actor who plays Manolo is getting to have a playful and flirty relationship with someone as attractive as Lucina. He too often cast is the steady right hand man or servant. He's been very good in this.

Jardinera - I know I'll enjoy the recap.

Oh no, hope Tito will survive.

Wow, this show definitely delivers. Can't wait for the recap to find out some key points that I couldn't follow.

Traveling Lady, I agree with all of your points. I was thinking the same thing about JL. And your point about the actor playing Manolo too. Although I would like to see Lucina with Ruben, I would like to see her have a relationship with Manolo too.

I've been unable to comment most of this week, but have just finally finished the recaps from Monday through Thursday.

What a STELLAR team of recappers for this thoroughly enjoyable novela! Each of you ladies have your own inimitable styles. What talented writers you are!!

A huge thank you from a newbie in Viewerville who is looking forward to another wonderful weekend discussion!

Fatima

I'm looking forward to the recap. I haven't seen Friday's episode, but I saw the avances for lunes. Looks like things are getting dark for Oriana.

Cathyx you are so right. This show definitely delivers.

Traveling lady-Have you seen Bajo la Misma Luna? The actor who plays Manolo has a smallish role, but he really shines in it.

A question about the actor who plays Manolo's cousin (the head police guy of Hermosillo.) Is that the same guy who played El Gordo in LFDD?

Sara C: yes, yes, He was El gordo in LFDD. I wrote it yesterday, again a LFDD-actor. There are a few same actor. :)

Sorry I missed it AlejoP-I'm usually reading comments on my phone and my eyes aren't what they used to. Plus I'm keeping up with three shows worth of comments and I'm a scatterbrain to start with! :-)

Sara - I love Baja la Misma Luna and had forgotten that he was in it. Now I remember him and he did shine.

Cathyx - I also want to see Lucina with Ruben, but get a kick out of Manolo and Lucina together. She is such a good character. I'd love to run into her in real life! She lights up the room.

Lina will never forgive JL now. He's toast.

You beat me to that one. I knew I had flashbacks to ENDA for a reason.

Happy Saturday everyone! This TN is really delivering. Traveling Lady, you are so right about JL. one minute I was like "he can't be that bad", the very next second boom. My Ric redeemed himself in my book. Why should Sab loose his inheritance if he was adopted by Ric's parents? They did name him in their will. He was also legally registerd as their son. where is the legal problem. Are Mexican laws that different?
Awaiting your masterpiece dear Jardinera. Bye for now.

Hanna

I hope now Oriana will realize she's not doing Lina any favors by staying with JL.

Oriana looking for the trouble for herself with moving to JL. She might allows too much her daughter, but now Lina is learning the bad face of his father. Heroe Tito injured, I think the man - who does such thing with a small pet - is really cruel.

Raquel is like a spy. Last time she watched the fight from back, in this episode she eavesdroped Lucina and Manolo conversation.

I kept forgetting to mention this, but is anyone else creeped out by the new title sequence with the "mannequin" versions of our characters instead of scene snippets?

It's up--finally!

Good Re-Cap Jardinera, you hit all the main points from last night.

I wonder if anyone knows how many episodes remain for this TN.... this TN could be easily wrapped up in a couple of episodes.... Orines needs to stop the pretences, and cut JL loose. With the "drop kick" of Tito fresh in the mind of Rhodalina, Orines can go back to the Old Lady, and be well protected from JL.

BTW, I am not sure that Ricky is the man for Orines...There is something about a man that cries to be with a woman, that just does not sit well with me. (JL is doing it too.)

To borrow from Steve Harvey, a man profess his love, provides and protect his woman. they (JL and Ricky) don't whine, and shed tears to show their love, to a woman.

I don't know of any woman, that wants a crying (weak) man, although this can get women in touble, because they (women) are sometimes attracted to A$$holes, they confuse with a strong man.

I must admit, this TN is not bad, I wished it came on earlier, 'cause I find myself staying up to watch, not waiting for Univison.com.

Lee fox: MPV has 100 capitulos and the 2 hour of finale. It was the 44th.

Inspired, Jardinera. Can't decide whether I like Mad Hilde or the long, wonderful Margaret-Keane name for Marilu. If only the two of them were resigned to their recent fates, by the way, but I have my doubts.

Agree about the Fashion Police alert. Weird outfit on Oriana for un paseo.

Can Tito really be dead? I am laughing at the thought of JL living in that little house, but sick with worry that we have seen the last of quite a canine actor. The actress who plays Alina certainly handles the coming and going with Tito on that short leash very well.

Jardinera - Great recap. My favorites: "Inspector Gadget" and "Oriana plays a petrified possum to perfecto."

Not that it matters to Alina, or to Tito, but I'm wondering if JL actually kicked Tito or if instead he shook him off his leg. Thankfully, the camera didn't show exactly what happened, only JL and Oriana's shocked faces as Tito lands on the grass. Hope they can patch him up.

Strange that the law would take Sebas' shares, but maybe the jerk will open his eyes about Ricky when he sees he'll keep him in the family.

Lee Fox - Men crying is a staple in TNs. Apparently, the producers think the viewers like it.

Even though JL needs to quit and let Oriana move on, they need family therapy to help Alina deal with this. Maybe it would even help JL. If Tony Soprano could do it, he can too.

Thanks for the recap Jardinera. I enjoyed your asides.

I also hope Tito has not done for, pobricito.

JL's violence is escalating: first Oriana, Tito and I'm concerned about Lina too. His new job seems to be bringing out the worst in him.

UA - we did talk about the new opening. Some liked it, others didn't. The scene w/Maddie and her kids and Ruben is spot on.

Thanks Jardinera for another weekend delightful recap.
Question: Did anyone besides me get the impression that Oriana gave in and had sex with JL. Judging from her reaction afterwards crying, holding onto the covers securely. To top it off, the way she went for the shower was as if she felt dirty. after all she was already in bed for the night when JL entered. Why would she need a shower merely because he asked for sex? Also, with my mind already in the gutter, I didn't imagine that JL had given up and left the room so peacefully.

My favorite line from the recap was "She winds up the ol’ Victrola with that scratched record of hers and puts the needle on".

Thanks AlejoP, that means there are many more Lies to be told here, before this TN is over....So far, everyone except Tito have lied.(even Alina).

Niecie in MD, this is my 4th TN, but the first Drama. (I really like this better than the comedies that turned into dramas).
I have seen grown a$$ men crying like babies, in each TN. They build the galans up as hulks, then turn them into pudding when the woman doesnot want them anymore.....How much of this is "Art" imitating "Life".

Foxy - Oriana definitely did not have sex with JL. He got up and left fully clothed in pajamas and robe, just the way he came in. I think Oriana was out of sorts from the sheer emotional toll that living with JL is causing her.

Lee Fox - I'd like to know the truth on "Art" versus "Life" too.

Thanks for the recap, Jardinera. I liked "Inspector Gadget" and agree about the paseo wardrobe but "swell of elfin musicians play corny Fifty’s potted plant melodies in the background" really tickled my funny bone.

I just finished watching the episode and I also hope Tito is ok. The way JL is treating the most defenseless for his household (Lina and Tito) says a lot about his true nature. He better get one hell of a Karmageddon. I don't believe for a second that he did what he did to give his family a better life. He was greedy. He only wants Oriana to maintain control. The only love there is sick and twisted. He's an abuser. Punto.

And I understand that in real life a victim often does continue to stay with the abuser, but this is a TN and I feel like this storyline is just encouraging that kind of behavior instead of sending a "get the hell out" message. JL gets darker and more violent and Oriana just digs in her heels and fires up the ol' Victrola (another great line.)

Foxy and Niecie-I don't think they had sex either. I felt skeezy just watching the scene. I completely understand Oriana's need to shower.

Thanks Niecie, that's relief to know that nothing happened even though I'm annoyed with Oriana for putting herself in this position.

Wonderful recap, Ms. Jardinera654!

Loved Inspector Gadget and the Elfin Musicians and the 50's music line. I got a huge laugh out of that one!!

The one who is really bugging me right now is Oriana. I can't put my finger on it, but she's bugging me. The darn kid Alina doesn't need to get everything she wants. Oriana didn't have to go back to JL. Now, JL is getting even more controlling and abusive which is going to make it harder and harder to leave.

I fear that Alina and Oriana are going to become prisoners very soon.

As for my little Tito El Bambino, that little doggie had better be alive...or else.

To our AlejoP, Urban Anthropologist has a very good weekend topic that is currently open for discussion.

We are wondering how some of these TN, especially the comedies, perform in your country? Hope you can add your comments over there as I know I would love to hear your thoughts, too!

Gracias!

Fatima

Fatima: Thanks your invitation! :-) I am trying to write my comments, and I think it will be long. I will write abou TN exams and failures in Hungary.

I'm sure we all know people who are under the delusion that children should have intact families, even when there is tension.

In the words of Bulldog Briscoe "This stinks! This is total BS!"

Nothing about the interactions between JL and Oriana are good for Alina. Whether Tito survived that kick or not she isn't going to forget this spectacularly gratuitous display of cruelty.

AlejoP, we will all be looking forward to your comments and perspective!

Urban, I second Bulldog Briscoe!

Greetings from el centro de Mexico. This city is so much fun. So far I've had two significant wildlife sightings, a rat in a park and a trio of young ladies in full power, real life ramira wear. DH spotted them first and got all excited (eyeroll).

I had signed up for hulu before I left in order to be able to keep up, but come (here) to find that hulu doesn't work in mx. I find that really galling since I am paying for the service, not to mention that it cuts me off from my addiction. I'm working on a work around, but so far,no luck. If anyone has any tech advice,I sure would appreciate it. Until I can figure something out,I am ever more dependent on our fab recappers as my lifeline.

Other than that, having a great time. Tonight we're headed for Garibaldi, will keep a sharp eye out for Jose Alfredo and the rest of the gang.

De why Oriana moved in with JL. I do believe her 'por mi hija' line. She does feel guilty about telling Lina JL was dead and he turns out to be alive. She is basically trying to honor JL as a Dad by making sure he sees his hija regularly plus get JL to get those charges in Colombia removed. It's a bad idea because JL us a snake in the grass--he did his dirty deeds in Ori's name and didn't tell her and someone like that is just always gonna be sneaky and shady--but I think at this stage, the whole living situation with JL exploding will be for Lina's benefit. She'll have to see for herself that her Dad is the malvado here and not Ricardo. I recall Fatima proposing this question a few weeks back, 'What will convince Lina that her father is the bad guy?' or something like that.

Lina is so enamored with her father that Oriana sitting her down for a heart-to-heart would do no good. She has to experience his venom herself, unfortunately. And the Tito situation is opening her eyes.

JL is still a moron. He's doing the whole 'reconquista mi mujer y mi hija' thing wrong. Ric is also a more sincere heartfelt crier. JL's tears just freaked me out, while Ric's made me go 'Aaw'. JL's tears were more 'I'm crying to make you feel bad and force you to sleep with me' while Ric's was more 'I can't live without you, please don't leave me.' However, I'm still shocked he didn't take Doña Paloma's money.

Lee Fox 03:41 PM. You wrote: "To borrow from Steve Harvey, a man profess his love, provides and protect his woman. they (JL and Ricky) don't whine, and shed tears to show their love, to a woman". I like Steve Harvey but IMHO I think his statement is a bit outdated. It was applicable back when a women's role was in the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant.

I don't see crying necessarily as a sign of weakness in a man. For one thing, what men do is more what I call "shed a tear". It's the women who weep nonstop at every opportunity.

That said, I find Ric's nonstop begging more annoying than the crying.

Carolina! How absolutely cool that you are in Mexico, amiga!! That is a total bummer that you can't access Hulu. Can you just go to the Uvideos site and see the TN from there?

Ramera wear! I am dying laughing with the image of your husband thrilled to death that he saw ramera wear in real time!! :))

Please keep us updated on your travels there. Tell us more about the FOOD!

J desde NYC, when JL (I don't like the way the beard looks on him, btw), turned down all that money, I figured he was just going to make Paloma up the ante so that he could get even more money. I am sure he has something up his sleeve re that money; am sure of it.

Foxy, I loves me a beggin' man! That's what makes Ricky so sexy to me. He wants his smoochies and his baby back and He Ain't To Proud to Beg! Good Lord!

Jose Luis has money and he enjoys being a criminal. Why would he need Paloma's money?

Thanks for the recap, Jardinera.

Carolina, my friend's sister is visiting from England. She has a Hulu account. They told her to change the computer setting to show that she is in the USA and then use the password. So, maybe you could try changing your computer's setting to Mexico.

Foxey, men professing, and providing is old school, and outdated because women don't require a man to be a man anymore.....Since in many cases, women can provide for themselves, they don,t need the financial provisions they did when they were barefoot, and pregnant...

Just one of the many reasons for the transformation of the type families we see today. Single parenting seems to be the normal family unit today. (BTW - women can't raise boys to be men, a man has to be somewhere in a boys life.)

The point I was making, dealt more with men having a backbone. Profess your love for a woman, but if she don't want you....move on.

Lee Fox, you said that women can't raise boys to be men, what do you mean by that? I've heard that many times before and I never knew what that meant.

The sons of single women don't grow up to be men? Don't grow up to be what you would call a man, whatever that is? What examples do boys need in order to be a productive adult who treats women fairly? My answer is that they need to see men treating their mothers and sisters with respect. The men that the mother's choose to date can do that, but then it's up to her to expect and demand to be treated with respect or they are out the door. And that is all boys need to know to grow up to be a man. They don't need a man to teach them that, they need the women in their lives to teach them that.
I'm not saying that fathers aren't important, because they are. A healthy relationship between the two parents is the most important thing in any child's life, but if the relationship is not healthy, then it's better that the children are not subject to that. And that is my own humble opinion.

Thanks for another of your wonderfully entertaining and amusing recaps, Jardinera. I read this recap and many of the comments earlier. I just finished watching the episode and catching up with the latest comments.

Too bad that Rhodalina didn't select a Rottweiler. Little Tito certainly has a warrior's heart but is after all is said and done...well... little. I'm guessing that he is still alive but suspect that things will never quite be the same between father and daughter.

I really like Carmelo. He reminds me of a real life cop I know, right down to the scowl and the dangling unlit cigarette.

I'm so sad that Berto was killed so soon. I'm guessing that ballistics will reveal that the same pistol was used to kill Ricky's daddy.

I can't decide whose begging annoys me the most, Ricky's or JL's.

I get a kick out of the sneaky face that the sweet Paloma gets when she is doing a bit of conniving.

Carlos

Carlos, Oriana must be really good if she has 2 very good looking guys begging to be with her and be chosen by her. That sounds like my life, haha. No, not really. :(

I meant to ask this earlier and maybe I missed it in the comments, but does anyone have an explanation about the redistribution of Sebas' shares? I guess law is different in Mexico because I thought the fact that he was legally adopted by Gabriel would count for something.

CathyX, I know what they mean. I was the single mother of two men. I can tell them how a man acts from OBSERVING men, but I can't tell them everything. For instance, there's this 12 year old girl that I know that is raised by her father. She is a mess. She acts like a girl, but she...you can tell she is being raised by a man. Her dad went away for a while and left her with my friend and her husband. She had to begin with the basics. Ladies close their legs. Ladies do not swear. Ladies wash their hair. It is not normal to have lice three times. Ladies do not scream out of the house. Ladies take showers.

I tried so hard to make my sons "men" that they joke and say that I was rough with them. The other day, my son said (joking), Ma my arm is broke...I'd say get up, shake it off, quit crying and act like a man. Has your arm fallen off? Then you're OK.

Anonymous, but not all men swear and not all men don't wash their hair. So do boys have to swear? Do boys not wash their hair? Sorry, but that's just a factor of education and proper upbringing which has nothing to do with the sex of the child. A woman can raise a boy to act and be proper without a man to show how to do it, just like a man can do the same with a daughter. I think that humans don't need both sexes of parents to raise a child properly, whether it's a mother raising a son or a father raising a daughter.

cathyx, I will give the short version here, on boys 2 men. E-mail me for a much longer answer. (leefox201@gmail.com)

When boys transition to men, only a man can guide him through the perils and challenges of manhood. The man does not have to be a dad or boyfriend, they can be a teacher, coach, minister etc.

CathyX, there were also questions and situations that I could not help my sons with. For instance, my son threw a "dirty" towel in the washer and I discovered it. There are questions that I could easily answer for a daughter (if I had one). There are things that I could not answer for my sons. Only a man should have that conversation with them. My son was mortified the day that I took him shopping for "supplies". He couldn't look me in the eye for a while.

Lee Fox, I think you're kind of projecting US family life re single parenthood on the tns. Both Ricky and JL are rich and have professed love for Ori. They have no issue professing and protecting. Every TN I've seen, the galans are filthy rich. The women are usually poor. The classic Rosa TN is about a poor girl having a rich galan fall madly in love with her but societal/family obstacles and class prejudice temporarily stopping their happiness. In this case the galan usually professes his undying love and protection and marriage and then hell breaks loose. What allows the poor prota and the galan overcome is not the galan's money but the prota and galan realizing and overcoming the haters around them.

For me, the whole men crying in tns is a form of humility for the galan to show he's serious about the prota since the galan is typically a rich guy usually gets what he wants. It's a big courting game. Look at Ric. He's had various women crazy about him-Marilu, Raquel, Maria, etc, but only with his true love' Oriana has he had to do the work to get her heart. There's no doubt he can take care if her, but her hubby JL, who through his contraband business deals can also take care of her. But Oriana doesn't want just money. She wants someone who'll protect her peace of mind. That's why Ric is the galan and JL the Villano. Ric is willing to humble himself and protect Oriana-he told her about Sebas and Maria, offered to sell his shares to get JL to leave her alone, get the Colombian lawyer to clear her name. JL has just made Ori's life hell-dirtying her name originally and blackmailing her to stay with him. Just a thought.

Thanks to all of you for taking time to read and leave your posts this weekend. The discussions again have been extremely interesting and show the diversity of those who enjoy telenoveladom--for want of a better word....
==========
Sara C.:

As for the law governing the rights of inheritance, I have no idea cuz I thought the same as you. I have to figure that it is just different south of the border....

I guess they are Jardinera, but I was still a little disappointed. *ha-rumph*

Jardinera- I'm sorry I let the weekend pass by without commenting. I kept hoping I'd get to see the episode first, but I never got the chance. Wonderful recap, and great discussion this weekend.

As for why they gave in to Lila's demands, all I can think is that they wanted to avoid the scandal of a public legal fight, because it just doesn't seem right to me. Would all adopted children be in danger of losing their inheritance?

If Tito doesn't win a Premio this year, then David Zapeda should give his back. That dog should take a bow wow.

Vivi/Sara C.: Good point re inheritance. Perhaps I'm just not mentally with it these days to catch all the finer points. I know that was what Ric kept saying as the reason not to contest, but I thought when he said she was legally in the right to demand those company shares that he meant it literally. Ooops??

J desde NYC , Great explanation, I have notice the trend you mention in all the TNs I have watched so far.....

I am o the opinion that all children need both parents.

When people lament the high divorce rate in recent times I have to think that the failure to form strong relationships is the primary cause and children growing up in single-parent households are at a distinct disadvantage for this because they have no primary example to follow.

Human isolation is getting worse all the time in other ways. We're now living in a world where many people don't even learn the art of conversation. I fear for the future.

I appreciate that there are more tns that don’t fit that rich guy/poor humble girl model these days. Even this tn is not really that model. Oriana is not some poor, humble girl. She’s an educated woman, who was middle-upper middle class, and had a career before having her daughter. Ricky being filthy rich is nice, but it really hasn’t made much of an impression on her. Of the current crop of tns, only one fits that old model—Corazon Indomable.

In Por Siempre Mi Amor, both protagonists are business owners who have made their own wealth. In Robo, she’s old money, he’s new money. In PEAM, she was rich and highly educated, he was poor and highly educated.

Jardinera - Your kitty is adorable!

I'm a bit confused as to which gun Lucina has. Does she have the 44 or the smaller one? But the fingerprints won't matter anymore since they've been handled so much.
If she has the 44, then all they can do is prove that that was the gun that killed Ric's dad, but not that Oriana didn't use it. If JL has the smaller gun that Lina held, the prints won't be on that one either. I'm not sure how JL would be able to use that gun to keep Oriana around.

Vivi, the model is changing, but it seems to me galns tend to be well-off. There's never any doubt that they can economically provide for the prota because of his inherited wealth or education. Even in the traditional model, money is never really the issue, it's emotional maturity I.e, can the protas overcome the people against them to live their fps?

I think here in Mentir we don't actually know Oriana's background. We know she went to college and can teach math. Her parents are dead and she didn't know her grandparents. So, she was pretty much middle class. She didn't work when she was in Colombia in order to take care of Lina but she didn't have servants, drivers, etc. She also adjusted quickly to the idea of working and taking care of her daughter as a shop girl when she first assumed Ines' identity.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that in tns I've seen, money is never really an object for the galan so Lee fox's projection of how crying/begging works in tns based on his own American experience doesn't really fit since most tns are just variations on the Cinderella story-something traditional like Maria Isabel, Mentir which is in the middle IMHO, or even something out there like Teresa-I just read a photo blog chronicling how that TN went where the prota was pretty evil and stepped on everyone to get out of poverty.

And I use tns as variations of Cinderella stories because iirc in Cinderella the prince was seeking the right girl as much or more than Cinderella

Here's another charge to add to Lucina's long list of illegal actions: tampering with evidence.

Urban, re "learning the art of conversation". Oh my gosh, I SO agree with you!

I am no Luddite. I keep up with technology, but honest to gosh, I get literally FRIED when people just want to communicate via garbled text message. They don't even want to talk over the phone. Nopis. just try getting same people to put down their stinking phones when they do finally agree to go out for a meal.

I enjoy others company. I enjoy good discussion. The dinner table for my family was a chance for a daily, monthly, yearly "speak to each other" time. It was a thrill for me as a child to be allowed to sit at the dinner table when my parents' wonderful friends came over for dinner. I might not have always understood their highbrow conversations, but I was allowed to sit there and take it all in.

Those types of settings are few and far between and I was not born in the dark ages, either. Guess I was just lucky with the parents I had.

I digress, but I had to tell you that I am in TOTAL agreement.

Fatima

Has anyone yet written a science fiction novel in which humans stop talking and only text and IM? Some sci-fi books of the past were absolutely prophetic and this particular phenomenon needs a cautionary tale of some kind.

Well, Urban, when it comes to setting aside time for real conversation, I know I am in the minority amongst my friends.

In their view, there is "no time" to take the time to sit and talk. They prefer text message or a quick Skype or using the iPad to chat.

They do this with everyone. They want to "get it over with".

Of course, my friends' parents like me because I like to talk! LOL!

Fatima

Gracias, Jardinera, for the recap!
