Mentir Para Vivir #93 Mon 2/17/14 Bad news travels fast and it’s really bad

Ruben, Cesar, Seb and Leo are at the hospital. The doctor tells them that Fabiola has lost the baby and she’s in danger, too – she lost a lot of blood and needs a transfusion. Seb mentions the HIV and the doctor says this adds to her problem, too. Also, the baby wouldn’t have made it anyway, because Fabi suffered from placenta previae (according to Wikipedia, this is “an obstetric complication in which the placenta is inserted partially or wholly in lower uterine segment” (for whatever it’s worth and for those who understand medical stuff better).

Raquel is explaining to Jacqui about Oriana and Ric’s relationship (apparently skipping the whole fake identity thing, since she's calling her Ines); then Lucina gives them and Oriana the bad news about the baby. Oriana thinks it was all her fault, but nobody agrees with her. In her own, particular manner, Raquel makes a comparison between herself and Marilu – she was at once interested in Ric, too, but that didn’t mean that she decided to go around trying to kill people; Marilully is just crazy and if she didn’t like suffering so much, Oriana would enjoy the fact that now she will be able to marry Ric.
I think Raquel kind of has a point here.

The news about the baby spreads around. Piero finds out from Ric (who found out from Oriana); he’s with Mariano at jail, waiting to see what will happen with Marilooney.
She’s in the Inspector’s office, being questioned by Manolo. When she finds out that she killed Fabi’s baby instead of Oriana she starts crying - she didn’t mean to hurt Fabi. Manrique, the lawyer, is with her and I guess he’s trying to plead momentary insanity on her behalf and she’s doing a splendid job supporting his efforts, because she has the crazy eyes and the crazy Oriana talk: she stole my husband, I didn’t plan to kill her, but, oh, how I wanted her dead, it’s all her fault (at least this is something she and Oriana can both agree on).
Piero, who is also present for the interrogatory, reminds her that she only had a fling with Ric back in the day and when she came back he was already in love with Ines. But this doesn’t seem to register with her and Manolo goes back to the actual crime, not the romantic entanglements: she was drunk, shot a gun and killed an unborn baby.

JL finds out the news about the shooting from TV and calls Raquel to get more details. She explains him that Oriana and Alina are ok and looks surprised that he would ask about Fabiola and her baby, when he doesn’t seem to give a damn about his own child that she’s carrying.
JL reminds her that his paternity is still in doubt, but agrees to send her money to take care of some analysis bills. He can’t bring her the money himself because his torso is almost completely bandaged after the latest fight with Ric.

Jacqui and Mariano are both very sad for Fabi; Mariano is also worried because Jacqui won’t give up on the idea to infiltrate the real estate company. She insists to do it, if not for her father (who was unredeemable), then for her own conscience.
Mariano then goes to the hospital, just in time for the doc to come with the latest on Fabi: her wound is infected, they are giving her antibiotics and the next 72 hours are crucial.
And, get this: apparently she was 16 weeks pregnant!! Her fling with Seb started early on, even if she only got pregnant the last time they were together, she should still be more pregnant, right? With everything that has happened, it feels like 16 months to me.
Mariano asks about the baby and later on he claims the body. They won’t be able to give the little boy a proper burial because he wasn’t baptized, but maybe they could incinerate him and let Fabi decide what to do with the ashes.
But, in the meantime, Leo and Seb have the time for a little fighting; I agree with Cesar, this is totally inappropriate and Leo should keep the peace for now, even if Seb has been a royal jerk in the past.

Jacqui and mama Rosa talk about Ines and Fabiola. With all the tragedy, Jacqui is at least happy because at the party she met Ruben and Seb, who work for the real estate company – now she will be able to find out more about this business, if maybe she shares what she knows with them.
Just then Uncle Sam shows up, questioning them on what they’re doing in Hermosillo. Rosa tries to pretend she is there to meet Jacqui’s boyfriend, but soon enough they go into a screaming match – he thinks he’s the capo now, she doesn’t agree, since she believes her husband’s money was used for the real estate business. Sam threatens them, asks them to mind their own business and go back to their money spending ways. Then he leaves. Rosa begs Jacqui to stay away from Sam, but she looks more determined than ever. This won’t end well.

While Ric is hidden in one of Paloma’s guest rooms, talking with Piero about Marilu’s interogation, Paloma is wondering where everybody is and what happened at her party; she heard a gunshot, but the nurse assures her nobody was hurt.

After teaching Alina how to ride her bike for a while, Oriana goes to see Ric. He’s getting ready to go back home. They both hope that Fabi will be ok and they agree that it’s not their fault that Marilu turned crazy – she knew the plan from the very start. Ric also thinks that Oriana shouldn’t listen to Fidelia’s old fashioned ideas and better think about the fact that he wants to marry her. Oriana wants that, too, but she still has JL to worry about. Ric thinks that if Raquel’s baby turns out to be his, he will forget all about Oriana and Alina.
(And just when I think that Ric is not that bad, he says something idiotic like this – having another baby doesn’t mean that you forget the ones you already have; geez, you obviously have no kids of your own, dude! Maybe he's talking from JL's perspective, but Oriana doesn't believe JL will ever give up on Alina)

Ruben takes a break from the hospital to go check on work. All the men keeping vigil look pretty shaken up, but Ruben is particularly heartbreaking to see – the actor is nailing his part in these scenes.
Seb accompanies Ruben at work. (Leo refuses to shake his hand when he leaves the hospital).
Ruben quickly realizes that the materials being used are of very bad quality, but they have huge prices. He talks about this with Feliciano, who sends him to talk to the accountant. Before leaving, Ruben has the chance to meet the gran patron, Samuel, who is not happy with the advancement and asks Antonio where JL is. Well, not working for us anymore, that’s where he is, Tony explains.

Ruben asks the accountant about the prices and the quality of the materials, too, and the guy brushes him off quickly - he'll look into it. Seb hears part of the conversation and tells Ruben to talk to Piero if he wants to understand what is going on.

Ric is leaving Paloma’s, still talking about the ways they should break the news about Fabi to the old lady. In the meantime, he reminds Oriana how much he loves her, but their kiss is interrupted by news of the press’ arrival to get the scoop on the shooting. Ric decides he should be the one to confront them, spare Oriana and the rest of the house from the hassle. Then he basically runs to his car, only saying that he wasn’t even in town when everything happened. This will surely satisfy the journalists… NOT!

JL is at home, alone, promising to himself that he will never drink again and taking his pills – everything for Oriana’s sake. Sam comes for a visit (JL has his gun ready, just in case), he wants el Zorro back in business, because the others are a bunch of incompetents (no argument there). JL reminds him that he had a deal with Joaquin and his wife agreed to let him go. Sam says that you can never be done with their line of business, but, at the very least, he wants the CD. JL won’t give it to him, though, that’s his life insurance. And Sam better not hurt his wife or daughter either. And if anything happens to him, the famous CD will reach Homero de la Garza who is not dead! Ha! In your face, Samuel!

Leo has returned home briefly. He works a bit on Fabi’s (creepy) portrait; Homero tries to comfort him, mentions the success of the gallery, but Leo is in very bad shape. He goes back to the hospital, just in time for Mike, my future telenovio with dreamy blue eyes to show up. He tells Homero that Sam is in Hermosillo and that Rosa and Jacqui apparently have only one bodyguard, Pedro. Also, there is no sight of John in Sam’s entourage. Homero tells Mike to try to get close to Pedro and John, see if he can become their friend and find out stuff – he can begin by saying that he, Homero, is dead.

Ric is home, his butler is giving him some much needed TLC (although he makes it clear that he prefers Oriana’s – Duh!). Fidelia comes to express her worry about Marilu. She has done some awful things, but Fide still feels very bad for her. Could Ric wait with the divorce a little bit, not drive her even more over the edge than she already is? Ric agrees with this and he also reluctantly agrees to accompany Fidelia the next day when she goes to see Marilu in jail.

Piero and Seb tell Ruben the entire story about the money laundering. Seb has been able to make some compromising photos (of something that I forgot) and he will hand them to Homero. As soon as he’s done spying, he will resign his position. Ruben is worried for Maddy, who is the president and is surely signing all the fake checks for the expensive, inexistent materials and some make believe employees, too, apparently. So they all agree that Ruben needs to warn Maddy as fast as possible. And tell her about her daughter, too, right??

So Ruben waits for Maddy outside her office and tells her that her company is laundering money. She doesn’t believe a word of it, she thinks he’s jealous of her position, so he swears on his daughter’s health that he’s telling the truth. Then he explains what happened with Fabi and how she lost her baby. Maddy starts bawling.

John is back with Sam, who is very upset for being disobeyed, but is willing to give the bodyguard another chance – he needs to follow el Zorro and see who he meets and who could possibly have the CD.

Oriana is with Ric on the phone, once again wondering what they are supposed to do with Paloma. Talk to her doctor, wait for Fabi to get better? The abuela obviously knows something is wrong, she’s not easy to trick. Then how about you tell her and be done with it! Ugh…
After he hangs up, Ric receives JL’s visit. He’s in no mood to chat, but Mariano is also there and is more civil.
JL has come because he’s afraid for Alina and Oriana’s safety. Samuel threatened him and his family; Ric must not know how to choose his battles very well, because he almost jumps on JL for calling Oriana his wife (mi mujer), but Mariano is there to stop him.
JL also shares the information that he has a CD that Sam wants, but he can’t give it to him, because that would mean that he’s a dead man.
Mariano gets all buggy eyed and asks what is on the CD.

Thanks, Adriana! Your recaps are much appreciated since I have no Univision online. All this time wasted on Ric/Oriana when they could explain why she looks like Palomita. Plus, Fabi getting the kucked dog treatment. Ugh!

Excellent, Adriana. I can't believe no one called Mati about Fabi! I even heard Cesar mention at the hospital that he needed to tell his mother, but then he didn't. I guess no one wanted to hear her bitching.

Does Fidelia really think that Ricky visiting Mariloca at the prison is a good idea. I don't know. It just seems like he'd be encouraging her fantasies.

Thanks so much Adriana for this recap. Is the grand finale next Friday or was that for something else?

J, ITA so of these recent developments or retreads are not compelling and I want to know why these women look alike too.

Vivi, I don't know why Fidelia suggested this and Ric would go along. It seems the writers are just finding bad ways to keep Ric and Oriana from marrying.

I'm confused about Ruben's association with JL's company. Is Ruben's company buying goods from JL's company?

Thank you so much, Adriana Noel! Loved your asides.

Ric was a wee bit frustrated with Fidelia (at least, that's the way it looked to me) when Tia Fi kept pressing Ric to go see Malibu Barbie. He's already paying for a good attorney, what good does it do to have him show up? Marilu will only take it the wrong way and think that Ric is "interested". Honestly, at this point in the show, just drop this line of reasoning.

I am FED UP with Oriana and her constant whining about things are all her fault. I guess Oriana thinks she is pretty darn important that she has influence over so many things. They have dumbed Oriana down beyond recognition.

I think the Gran Final is on the 28th of February. I will be so sad when I can't see my Tito El Bambino anymore.

Adriana Noel - Excellent recap. Enjoyed your commentary.

Ruben still has a lot of growing to do. Such a wimp not to phone Matilda at the hospital. Matilda is a royal pain, but she had a right to know asap about her own daughter.

I'm okay with Ricky visiting Marilu in jail. He can let her know he's there only because he's her legal husband. Marilu needs a therapist and the jail should put her on suicide watch.

Made no sense for Sebas to try to shake hands with Leo.

Variopinta, from what I understand, and please someone correct me if I'm wrong, JL's company, real estate, is in business w/Ruben's company, construction. I don't think Ruben's boss knows about the money laundering operation just like Maddie doesn't.

Thanks Adriana for yet another recap that is way more interesting than the episode.

Although I like DZ the actor, I dislike Ric's whose character he's playing here. I'm not OK with him visiting Maricoo coo. She may be family, but what about "tough love". Especially since it's not yet know whether Fabi will come out of this alive.
I say let Marilu feel the consequences of her actions at least for the moment.

Then, in the same episode he shows another side of him that I dislike: "Ric must not know how to choose his battles very well, because he almost jumps on JL for calling Oriana his wife (mi mujer)." It's no wonder I was actually rooting for JL during their last fight.

Placenta previa is when the placenta is in front of the fetus and blocking the babies exit from the birth canal. (This calls for a C-section). The reason it's called "afterbirth" is because it's supposed to come out after the baby, not before.

Variopinta, as far as I understood, JL's real estate company gave Ruben's construction company a contract.
So they are building all this fancy buildings, but the real estate wants to play tricks, by using lousy materials and the construction comp doesn't seem to be aware of the whole thing.

Foxy, thank you for explaining to me placenta previa. I didn't really get what I read online as opposed to what they said on the sow, so I figured that someone must have been wrong.

I thought Ruben's company WAS JL's company. Ruben knows they're supposed to be building luxury units, the materials he's been given are champagne priced but tap water quality. He went to Escalona (who's in on the money laundering) and told him about it and Escalona shushed him.

That's when Sebastian told Ruben to call the Piero hotline to get the 411 on the business.

Thank you Adriana, I can't watch the shows until much later now that I can't view them online. Sometimes it's so late that I don't have time to comment. I hate that they changed it. The only good thing about watching it on TV is now I can see the previews.

I thought it odd too that they didn't tell Matilde until very late about Fabiola, but I don't blame them for wanting to put it off for as long as possible. The previews showed Matilde and Oriana slapping each other. Must see TV.

I didn't think if wrong for Sebastian to offer his hand to Leo to shake. He's trying to make amends and that's one gesture to get it started. Leo wasn't ready for it though.

Ruben was talking about the company paying high prices for cheap materials that he then has to use to build with. The building material company could be in cahoots with CI to launder the money. The higher price of materials is one way to launder the money, the material company could then repay the overcharge back to CI, or just use it as payment for playing along, and the buildings that are being built will also launder the money when CI sells the buildings. Ruben complained about the buildings were supposed to be luxury buildings but the materials were inferior.

I laughed at Matilde telling Ruben that he was just envious of her position when he tried to warn her about the company being a front for laundering money. I hope she gets burned.

Ruben's company was hired by CI to do the construction work. He went to CI to complain about the materials. CI was the one who bought the materials for Ruben's company to build with.

Cathy- Yep. That's what I understood too. Ruben is working for the construction company hired by JL/Sam's company.
