Que Pobres Tan Ricos #38- 2/27/14: Mama, Can You Spare a Dime?
Hola Amiguis. Shall we begin?
We get a replay of Macarena coming to stay with AS and Leo for we don't know how long. Question is, did she bring the lana? She sure seems to be swilling the booze as much as AS does.
MA is at the gate of Emiliano's school pretending he is Emiliano's Papa so his friends will stop pestering him about "Where's your Papa" all the time. It's school pick up time, but Emiliano can't go with MA cause Lupe doesn't know he's there. Only Lupe is authorized or maybe Don Chuy to pick Emiliano up, there are rules there. Lupe comes up and wants to know why the heck MA is at Emiliano's school while she elbows him in the ribs.
So you know how yesterday, Mini was doing all that research on line? Well, she shows up at Frida's Prepa looking for info on Frida from Tato. Tato is kinda, sorta reluctant to give her any info. She says she hasn't heard from the RPs since they went to Italia. Mini knows that AS is in Mexico, she's seen her, could Frida be with her by any chance? Tato still isn't saying.
Frida and Mati are eating and Tizoc is taking note for the bill you see. Mati thinks it's only fair, Frida not so much. I think Tizoc told her if she didn't like it, there's the door, don't let it hit your butt on the way out, or words to that effect. After Mati and Frida go, Perla tells him oooo, la, la, you got a thingy for Frida don't you? He acts all offended but she gives him the chisme that Deigo is so into Frida, imagine if they get married some day, the soccer player to the poor little rich girl. Tizoc doesn't like it one bit.
Macarena has gotten dressed in her finest and now wants to go to lunch with Leo and AS. Somewhere expensive and exclusive of course. Leo and AS wanted to go to the hotel restaurant, but that just won't do. Macarena wants to experience Mexico and that isn't at the hotel. AS gives Leo some money and tells him he better not overspend, suggest cheap things from the menu.
Mini is working Tato over for info on Frida. She finds out Frida quit the Prepa, and Mini asks if they are broke. Tato says no, he thinks not. Well, Mini decides to give Tato a kissy poo to get that info and all of sudden, there it is, her Face (I guess Facebook) info, phone number, etc. Mini tells Tato her Face name is Miniprecious! How quaint ; )
After Lupe and Emiliano, and MA trailing behind, get back to the Fonda she sends Emiliano to wash his hands and wants a word with MA, as she practically drags him off by the ear. She wants to know why MA is pretending to be Emil's Papa. MA explains about the talk he and Emil had, and Lupe wants to deal with this herself. Leave Emil to her she says. She never wants to let Ahole know that Emiliano is his son. MA tells her to really think about that, cause if Emiliano ever finds out that Ahole is his Papa, and said Papa never knew Emiliano existed, then Emiliano might have some trouble forgiving Lupe.
AS, Macarena and Leo have finished eating and the bill comes. It is way more than Leo expected and gets more money from AS. AS wants to know, in her own pumping for info way, about Macarena's parents. Well they have two castles besides the one in Madrid. One in Andalusia and the other, I didn't catch. Now it's on to the shopping, Macarena even offers to pay for things. Woooo, are they ever ready, and AS warns Leo something small. Well, they are in the store and whoopsie, Macarena left her credit card at the hotel, damn the bad luck. How will she pay for this stuff? Well, AS will write a check for it, the saleslady tells her since AS is a RP, she'll make an exception and AS says any trouble with the check, contact El Editorial!
MA is being Saul again at the same office for the realty company where Mr. Trejo has died. He asks if the secretary could possibly, maybe find that paperwork relating to his case for La Nopalera, he even wipes her tears and consoles her. She'll do it sure thing, no problem. MA gives her his cell number and the number of his "assistant" that would be Frida. When MA gets back to the Fonda, Frida is washing clothes and MA tells her about expecting that call from the secretary.

It's for Subway of course, its a Black Forest Ham 6 inch sub for only $5.00 complete with honey mustard and jalepenos. It's Saul that got the sub. End of product placement.
Mini and Isela have been out shopping too and Isela witches at Mini that they need a higher credit limit on their cards, it just isn't enough. Mini has other things to worry about. They are loaded down with bags. Mini is on her "Find MA" mission and Isela tells her to forget about him already. Mini sees AS, Leo and Macarena and wants to go over and say hello, but Isela stops her. Mini says she could be finding out from Leo or AS could slip up and tell her where MA is. Isela doesn't think he is in Mexico. Isela wants her to forget about that fraudster MA. If he was in Mexico he'd be sitting in jail. Mini is kerfuzzled.
MA wants Frida to stay with Granny Mati and keep an eye on her. He can't let the Menchacas do that, and besides AS and Leo are gone. So it's left to Frida. They talk about the scholarship again. She really wants to continue going to school, but the only way is with a beca (scholarship).
Nepo comes to the Fonda with a huge bouquet of flowers for Lupe and he talks to her primo "My Name is Mike" of course, He wants to know if "Mike" (MA) will take that offer of a job. Come see him manana he says. "Mike" is thinking about it.
Ahole thinks it's great that Adolfo and MA are going down for this fraud, but Vilma isn't so sure. The phone rings and Ahole tells Vilma to get it, it's Don Bambi, and he's heard from Adolfo and doesn't like what he's hearing at all. To bring his point across, Don Bambi shoots his gun in the air. Don Bambi sure wants no scrutiny of his accounts by no cops y punto. He hangs up and Ahole tells Vilma, maybe it wasn't such a good idea to be framing Adolfo and MA for this fraud, cause now Ahole and Vilma could be gambling with their lives.
Since dinner is over, Macarena now wants to go to Plaza Garibaldi to see the Mariachis and partay. AS again gives Leo money and tells him that's all he gets. Get Macarena to marry him, is AS' advice.
Nepo and Lupe talk. Lupe asks him what is Nepo's interest in her primo Mike? Well, Nepo offered him a job, so he can contribute to the household, that's what his interest is, plus he can keep his eye on Mike. Lupe wants Nepo to give her primo Mike a chance. Nepo leans in for a smoochy poo, which Lupe deftly avoids.
Leo and Macarena have gone to a club and some of Leo's friends are there. They ask why he isn't in Italia, which Macarena catches, also that Leo is broke, which Leo denies. They get a table and Macarena orders the premium Tequila and downs like four shots in no time. Leo is very worried. Macarena wants to partay harday all over town. Those friends of his won't let it lay either, so Leo has to find a way out, so, Macarena is tanked and Leo tries to sneak out without paying the bill. She also promised Leo they would do the horizontal mambo when they get back to the hotel. Leo accuses the waiter of giving them adulterated drinks and besides the tab should go to his friends they invited them, so Leo hustles Macarena out the door.
Mini and Isela are finally home with those bags and bags of stuff. Mini is thinking of Frida and calling her. Isela is fed up with Mini and besides Frida hates Mini, how does Mini even think that Frida will talk to her? Mini will find a way.
Frida and MA are trying to sleep in their penthouse, wrapped in plastic. Frida is cold as is MA, when Frida's cell rings. She goes to get it still wrapped in that plastic, it's Mini of course, pretending to be someone else and asks for Licenciado Ruiz Palacios if you please! Frida brings the phone to MA and he's happy, thinking it is the secretary from that company he talked to earlier. So he answers and Mini doesn't say a thing, she just smiles!

Mads thanks so much for your recap as well as your one from Monday. The product placement was hilarious especially since AA is one of my telenovios.
This has probably been discussed but I can't really laugh at AS & Leo now b/c their stealing the money is not funny to me. I want an anvil to hit them right now.
Don Bambi was fun and I'm glad someone can frighten Ajelo. What's up w/Luis Gatica playing all these villain roles? He's great its just as a baddie he seems to get less screen time than his good characters.

Mads, THanks so much for this wonderful succint but complete recap! I really intended to watch the whole thing last night but must have fallen asleep halfway through because I remember the restaurant but not the shopping and nighclubbing with Maca. I could tell because when I watch the end I usually change the channel and it was still at Uni.
Anyway, I LOVED the way Maca kept teasing them about going all out spending and AS and Leo staring at each other... Loved that AS and Leo got just a salad at the restaurant and kept staring at Maca and her food/drinks.
Have to go back and watch the Isela/Mini arguments and Mini calling MA (I am sure that will repeat tonight). HAVE to rewatch to catch the call from Bambi to A-hole. I could swear A-hole better have spare clothes at the office, he probably needed them.
I agree that Luis Gatica is a great talent and is not getting his due screen time lately.

It was very funny with Frida calling out JT on the state of the toilet seat and calling him a pig and a pig again; then doña Mati chiming in with all men are the same re. bathroom habits; and JT saying he could do as he pleased because it was his house and if she didn't like it there was the door. The censors were clearly at work in this scene.
Being on a Subway kick myself these days, I thought Saul could have picked something far more tasty. LOL.
My favorite scene was MA wrapped up like a mummy in the plastic and almost asphyxiating himself trying to get loose to answer the phone call. Maybe the shock of talking with Minerva will move him out of his state of inaction. It seems the only times he really reacts to anyone /anything is when Lupita is on the scene and he jumps and cringes in fear and of course to the needs of Emiliano. MA did have some really good points for Lupita about Emiliano.
For me it was another Monkish moment when MA clicked his heels bowed and saluted the photo of the deceased señor Trejos. The gestures made me see Mr. Monk in his brown suit for just for a moment.
As AS continues to send bills to the Editorial Ruiz-Palacios I wonder when that faulty money line will come back to bite her.
Loved MA between Nepo, the flowers, the cafecito and Lupita. I also liked how Nepo said he'd be by real early to pick up MA for work tomorrow morning. Should be interesting. More interesting was that Lupita didn't/couldn't give Nepo a goodnight kiss.

I'm also on the train that thinks Maca is broke as well setting up some hilarity when the truth comes out. AS is burning through that money mighty fast and sooner or later those bills are going to be a red flag for AHole.
Min obviously isn't stupid even if she acts it. She figured out how to track down MA when the cops, Bambi's thugs and AHole haven't been able to do.
Every time I see the RP's in plastic wrap on the floor I want to smack them senseless. They have enough money for cells phones but not to buy a couple of cheap blankets or one of the ever present in TN's serapes. Sometimes I wish they would just get pneumonia and get it over with.
MA finally heeds EVERYBODY and agrees to take a job. Any bets that Nepo will make him do all the dirty work and heaving around heavy crates. I foresee a dose of reality hitting m arrogant.
Good Lord and entire scene dedicated to product placement! That's a first.

I laughed at the Subway scene last night just like I laughed when we learned Subway was healthy for us the other night with Em's classmates. But now that Decie Girl has pointed out the entire scene last night was only about Subway .....now I'm kinda irked by it.

Leo and Macarena are my favorite characters to watch now. Her lip biting thing is funny. The actors must be pretty comfortable working together. I'm disappointed Leo didn't hold onto that smidgen of conscience he briefly displayed when he was appalled that AS had stolen the money, but he's so entertaining. Yep, I think Mac is definitely broke and looking for a sugar daddy. This is going to blow up spectacularly. Heeeeeeeeeyyyy, Macarena!
Say, maybe Mac would be happy with Tato. Normally I hate him, but I did enjoy his scenes with Minerva, or should I say Mineprecious. She played him like an EZ-button player piano.

I'm surprised that AS hasn't spotted the telltale clues that we have and recognized the remarkable similarities that she and Macarena share. I did not recognize Macarena as our sweet silent Solita (CI). What a difference but what a cutey. I so love her smile.

This is dragging especially when contrasted with LI which moves at warp speed every night. Sometimes i get the feeling i could miss a week of this one and pick right up where i left off. There are however some very endearing characters which keep me sticking around.

Thanks, Madelaine! As usual, I've forgotten more than I've remembered of last night's epi, so thanks for the entertaining memory-jogger.
One of the two things I remember clearly was waiting for Macarena to say she'd "forgotten" her wallet. In Destilando Amor, that was the first of many unsubtle clues that was ignored by the clueless future wife of Francisco the grifter.
Not that I think Mac is a grifter, but either she's broke or just an ordinary leech. If AS has any money left, she'd best spend it on the ticket for Mac's return flight before things get too embarrassing.
The second thing I remember clearly was that damned Subway ad! Improvise your own dialog: "Thanks for bringing lunch, assistant! Now I won't have to order sushi like all the other executives in TNs. By the way, I didn't know the 'That Girl' flip hairdo was making a comeback." If Jarod shows up in an episode, I'm out!
(Was it really only a 6" sub? Ripoff - it's supposed to be a $5 FUTlong...)
Cute when Perla was teasing JT about Diego liking Frida. Was she just being a good sport about Diego not being into her? Or is she trying to get JT to up his game with Frida so that Diego will (presumably) move on to Perla?
Trivia: Minerva was the Roman goddess of... wisdom. (Also of martial defense. I said "martial," not "marital.")
Pretty stupid of Leo to take Mac to the club where he was a regular. Way to keep a low profile, bub. Of course, I would have been shocked if he'd done something smart, but... anyway, if Macarena passes out tonight, maybe AS can take the opportunity to rifle through her purse to see if there's any cash at all.
And I think at some point last night or on Wednesday, Macarena said she hadn't had a chance to exchange her euros for pesos yet. Funny, that's exactly the same excuse AS used earlier this week when trying to get out of paying someone else! And yet AS still doesn't suspect anything??

Cute when Perla was teasing JT about Diego liking Frida. Was she just being a good sport about Diego not being into her? Or is she trying to get JT to up his game with Frida so that Diego will (presumably) move on to Perla?

Pretty stupid of Leo to take Mac to the club where he was a regular. Way to keep a low profile, bub. Of course, I would have been shocked if he'd done something smart, but... anyway, if Macarena passes out tonight, maybe AS can take the opportunity to rifle through her purse to see if there's any cash at all.
And I think at some point last night or on Wednesday, Macarena said she hadn't had a chance to exchange her euros for pesos yet. Funny, that's exactly the same excuse AS used earlier this week when trying to get out of paying someone else! And yet AS still doesn't suspect anything??
Yep, pretty dumb of Leo to go to a place where he's known and talk to old frenemies. Perfectly in character, though. If he were smart, he would have smooth-talked Mac into something that didn't require any money and claimed that was the only way to really experience Mexico, or something.
It was funny when AS claimed to have only dollars and euros as the reason she wasn't tipping the hotel guys. They were just looking at her like "We'll take euros! Or dollars!"

And I agree, it's hilarious to watch AS not recognize her own shyster behavior when Macarena does the same things. How long until Mac claims to be raising money for charity?
I may have to start watching this one regularly now that Macarena is on the scene. I don't know if it's the pleasure of watching Corazon Indomable's Solita play a completely different role, or if it's just the enjoyment of watching a supposedly royal grifter take AS and Leo for a ride, but it's a kick.
What I would love to see is a cameo from Daniel Arenas or some other CI cast member. Can't you just see him passing Macarena on the street and doing a double-take? "Something familiar about that girl....But no, it couldn't be."
The show is the first time I've ever seen anyone other than my father called Tato. I wonder if it's short for something, or if it's just a nickname.

Thank ALL of you recappers! I am struggling to catch up and enjoying your write ups before I get to watch the shows. so this carry over from the previous recap comments is all I've got to add - - "I just regular-hate Tato."
The Macarena actress played another character who schmoozed dudes for money and gifts in Amorcito Corazon, but there she was a total beeyotch who really was poor with no claims of royalty (she did pretend to her classmates to be wealthy until she was found out). I am liking Macarena much better.
