Qué Pobres, Weds 2/19/14 (#33): Cold Feet and Sticky Fingers

Updated with new stuff in green.

Leo and Frida both have mixed emotions about leaving the Menchaca home. Frida says she'll miss "her people," but she's obviously excited about having stuff again. Leo admits that living in La Nopalera has brought out his creative side, but he still can't wait to get out of there.

Separately, but in unison, Lupita and MA both wonder and worry about the purpose of Vilma's visit yesterday. Maybe Ahole found out about Emiliano, or perhaps he suspects that Mati is hidden there.

JT gives Frida the equipment rental fee. (Net profit from the event was 1500 pesos.) They boldly state how much they won't miss one another. Then Frida kisses him and takes off. A moment later, Mati notices that JT is in good spirits.

After a particularly unsatisfactory shower, AS swipes the money. She has a moment of hesitation and prays for a "sign." The "sign" is a really big fart, which she interprets as meaning "go for it."

In another prayer, she promises to pay it all back just as soon as she's rich again. She knows 300,000 pesos ($25,000) won't go very far.

On her way out of the house, she is intercepted by Tomas, the Menchacas' paralegal. It turns out he was the waiter AS was super-snotty to in Episode 1. She doesn't remember him, but he sure remembers her. "Well, all you people look alike to me," she explains. She tells him to fetch her some coffee or the soup of the day. He says he's not a waiter here; he's a licenciado. He offers his hand for her to shake, and instead she ridicules him.

Ahole is giddy with excitement. Tomorrow is Monday and he'll tell the Board about the baby that's on the way (never mind that they don't even know if it's a boy yet, not to mention it doesn't exist). "Now they'll have no excuse to deny me the presidency!" he gloats to a despondent Vilma.

Later, Ahole's phone rings constantly. Vilma worries and he tells her to mind her own business. It's Adolfo calling. Ahole is fed up with his paranoia and refuses to answer the phone.

The Menchacas want to settle the debt as soon as possible. At first, MA tries to talk them into spending Nepo's money on other things; he says there's no hurry. Then he tries to back out of their deal entirely by offering to buy the house even though he can't afford it. The deal would be that they would all continue to share the place until MA comes up with the money. (I think this was Saul's idea. No! Saul's idea was to tell them the truth about the document and split the proceeds with the Menchacas, but apparently MA is too greedy to share!)

This proposal is, ahem, not met with much enthusiasm from the Menchacas. Chuy reminds MA they could still turn him in to the police. Lupita hurries out to get the hidden money.

Guendy and Perla say goodbye to the last of their customers; there was a rush this morning because there's a First Communion going on at the church. Guen goes on and on about how she feels such a cosmic connection to MA, blah blah blah. Perla says too bad - he's moving out. Guen tries to get more gossip out of Perla, but Perla won't give it up. In return, Guen refuses to tell Perla why Nepo will be happy when Lupita's relatives finally clear out.

(I keep skipping this in recaps because it's always such a minor detail, but it bears mentioning: every time we see Perla at the beauty shop, Guendy tries to teach her something about the trade. However, Perla is clearly NOT interested in the business at all.)

Later, Guendy tells Nepo the good-for-him, bad-for-her news. He is pleased as punch to hear it.

But the money isn't in Lupita's secret hiding place. (She leaves the hole in the floor open, where someone can step into it by mistake and twist their ankle.) JT suspects one of the RPs. MA says it certainly couldn't be a member of his family. Mati agrees - no Ruizpalacios would steal from them. (She doesn't vouch for the Romagnolis, though!)

[I'm amazed that no one has considered blaming Vilma or any of the strangers that were in their house yesterday. Or maybe Lupe checked it the night before or just this morning to confirm it was still there? If she said so, I missed it.]

Lupe does remember hearing ladies' dorm room door close just after she hid the money.

MA says, well, what about Perla? Where is she? They yell at him: she got up early this morning to go to WORK. And if not being here is a sign of guilt, what about your mama? MA and Leo say she's in her room, resting up from all the stress of these last few days.

"She's not here," Tomas replies. "I saw her leave a little while ago!"

Next time: The Plantain King goes bananas; AS enjoys a nice meal. Is it possible to spend $25,000 on a single meal? How about if you buy a new dress for the occasion?

Julie,

Thanks so very much for this most marvelous recap! You got everything.

Oh, so AS stole that money! I bet she blows it in one fell swoop. I don't know if you can spend $25,000.00 on one meal, but she'll find a way to do it.

I feel so bad for the Menchacas. I wish that Lupe had given that money directly to MA. It's a shame that AS stole it and wait until Granny Mati and MA find out she did! What will they do then? I still don't like the fact that MA is still trying to swindle the Menchaca. Now there will a huge fight over who stole it, I can see it coming.

Nepo was annoying with all his glee, as much as Guendy was with her fantasies about "My Name is Mike". I wish that Nepo would see how Lupe is so not into him.

I think Ahole is going to regret not answering Adolfo's calls. I wonder if Adolfo has a plan B in mind for Ahole if he crosses him?

Thank you for the recap!
I really like this TN. My favorite scene today was of Ana Sofia in the shower and how the water temp. kept changing on her! too funny.
I can't believe she stole the money from the Menchacas! I'm sure it won't take her very long to spend it.

Evelin

Julia, thanks for the great recap.

AS "stole " show for me last night. Ha ha! Loved her gripe session with Leonardo with her overdramatic pronouncements as well as the hot-cold shower scene. Then there was the robbery with her discussing the whole matter with God. Finally we had her escape with the money and DaVinci looking very smart in his latest outfit.

Technically, I guess we could say the Menchacas have now paid the Ruiz-Palacios: the money just didn't go through MA's hands. I wonder how long it will take to pin the robbery on AS.

Looks like nobody is going anywhere soon except for AS to spend the $25,000!

I added a few more details to the recap (new text in green).

I am amazed that MA wouldn't just tell the Menchacas the truth about the secret document. And now that the money's missing, he doesn't have to.

He really blew it when he offered to buy the house without explaining why. Eventually the truth will come out, and he will be in BIG trouble with all of them - especially Guadaluuuuuupe. All because sharing the million dollars wasn't good enough for him even though he currently has NOTHING.

Really, here is a protagonist with a looooooong way to go. There was a chance for him to get amnesia when they were beating him in the ring, but no, the only memory loss he's suffered is that he can't ever seem to remember that it's unwise to cross these people!

Julie, another great recap. It was very complete and you've got another good title.

Though I'm disgusted AS stole the money, I'm not surprised. The test for me will be what MA does if he finds out about it. If he doesn't let the Menchacas know or at least doesn't return what I hope is still the majority of the money left, I don't know how they can find a way to redeem him. If I were Saul, I'd be seriously thinking about dropping him as a friend.

It would be cute if DaVinci dragged the envelope of money out and left it at MA's feet. I would be OK with him busting AS. She deserves it for making him an accomplice to the deed.

And wasn't AS awful to Tomas? He took her crap with a lot of class.

Barbara

Barbara, I love your DaVinci plot!
That would be the best.

Jarifa

I agree about DaVinci. That would make him the first houseguest to actually earn his keep!

Another great recap, Julie. Thanks!
Had to smile at the soda bottle shower head. The Menchacas know how to make do, don't they?

La Paloma:

I had the same thought about the soda bottle shower head. They are DIYers aren't they?

Barbara

It is consistently interesting to me how the Menchaca's and their friends have boatloads more class than AS and her brood.

The RP's have apparently not hit bottom yet, plotting to screw over the Menchacas, leeching off them and now stealing money that would have ben given to them in the first place. MA the Unlikable made yet another of his bad decisions in telling his sibs not to tell AS about the repayment coming their way.

Not to be bitchy but I hope AS gets as sick as a dog from stuffing herself with her ill gotten goods.

Interesting how Leo admitted that living with the nacos has opened his alleged creativity. Poof Poof two of his had gestures here.

Frieda slides a little after her this is my pueblo my people but wow I can have "stuff" again. Apparently the RP's and Nepo are destined to never face reality.

Loved the little scene with Emilino and Mati. Lupe keeps seeing those and it must be killing her not to tell both of them that their pretend relationship is in fact a real one.

Leo's "Option A *poof*/Option B *poof*" is another thing that has never actually made it into a recap (at least not any of mine). It's cute and it's one of the little things that defines the character, but it's never been important enough to mention.

There are so much cute/funny/clever things, running jokes, and subtle cues that it's impossible to do justice to all of them. That's why I added that note in the recap about Guendy being so eager to teach Perla about the business, and Perla not being interested - because it's an ongoing thing and at some point they are probably going to have to talk about it. Perla needs to find something that interests her (in addition to her modeling dream), and Guendy deserves a more motivated apprentice.

Julie:

You are so right about the running jokes in this TN. I never put up the Option A: Poof! or Option B: Poof either, lol. I just focused on that never ending Stinky Suit that is at Day 29 now!

Maybe AS will buy MA a new suit during her shopping spree.

Naaaaa... that doesn't sound like something she'd do.

Oh, if only she would! You'd think with her sense of smell, you remember when they first got to the Menchaca's, she didn't like the smell! AS is all about herself though, so go figure. She'll put up with the smell, gag!

Wouldn't it be cool if the Menchaca let the RPs stay that Don Chuy banished AS from his bedroom? But then again, he wouldn't do that to Granny Mati.

Where has Chuy been sleeping all this time that the ladies have been in his room? I so want AS to get thrown out of there and have to rough it. She's probably oblivious that she will show up with shopping bags and they will immediately know who took the money.

I think Leo should get a job as a reporter or host for one of those gossip and fashion critique shows. He could actually be good at that and enjoy it.

Does Mati not have any funds in her own name? I suppose Ahole had her declared senile and took whatever she had.

I'm really disappointed by MA's stagnation. He's done NOTHING to improve his situation. He hasn't figured out how to make the VIP penthouse more comfortable. He hasn't made a move romantically. He hasn't offered household/fonda help. His morals have only gotten worse. And, of course, he hasn't changed his clothes. I need some sort of forward motion here.

Thanks for the recap!

I think Granny signed all of her stuff over to MA even before Ahole had her declared senile... and then everything in MA's name was seized because of the tax evasion and fraud.

As for MA, he is not only stagnating but possibly devolving. I could be wrong, but I don't believe the MA we met on Day 1 (the guy in the clean clothes) would have considered cheating the Menchacas or anyone out of what Grandpa intended them to have. He had too much pride for that.

Now he has apparently lost some of that pride, and he has also somehow failed to gain any humility to make up the difference.

Oh - you already said he was getting worse, Julia. Nevermind!

For rich people, they sure don't know much about money management. Diversify your assets! Spread them around to different members of the family! Bank accounts in Switzerland or the Cayman Islands! Sheesh.

At one point, Tomas wanted to borrow a laptop and nobody had one. MA piped up, "I used to have several of them in London." I cringed.

I'm increasingly coming to believe MA and his sibs grew up in some weird bubble. I don't know how long he was in London but he certainly doesn't seem to have the least idea of how to treat people, has no appreciation of his own culture, is overloaded with pride, lacks humility, lacks empathy, is clueless when it comes to reading people, has questionable ethics, isn't even really a good friend to Saul, never listens to anyone and whine and mopes instead of taking action. And the list goes on.

OK, I have a new idea: Freaky Friday en La Nopalera!

MA and Nepo swap bodies for one day.

Nepo is mortified by the laziness of his new "family" and makes them all get jobs. He sees how Lupe fusses over him when he's MA vs. the way she doesn't fuss over him when he's Nepo. This prompts him to get a job for himself too and earn enough money in one day to move the RPs into a crummy hotel but at least it's a place of their own.

Meanwhile, MA has to learn the names of many local fruits and vegetables. He spends most of the day lifting heavy crates and enduring nervous silence from Diego.

Thanks for this nifty recap, Julie, and thanks for embellishing it with some of those cutesy details that make this TN such an enjoyable confection.

Well, Ana Sofía had to go and borrow that money... and with God's approval no less. I'm looking forward to her sumptuous meal. I hope the cameras linger over it so we can vicariously enjoy it with her.

I loved that we got to share her shower experience though surely she has managed to somehow bathe before now.

Carlos

Julie, Freaky Friday....hmm, interesting. My guess is MA would learn very little. He would trip over and drop the fruit, all the while whining and feeling superior. BUT, love the idea of Nepo as MA getting a job and insisting Leo and AS do the same.

Barbara

Well, someone needs to possess MA's body and use a brain, since he is not doing it himself.

My thoughts exactly. I don't love everything about Nepo, but I think he could do more for MA in one day than MA has done for himself in a month. Including a change of clothing.
