Beware of Women In Black Hats
The señorita in the black hat walked into Alejandro’s
town mansion like she owned the place. By total happenstance Mama Rosario had
answered the doorbell when it rang and the woman rushed past Rosario as a narcotraficante
cigarette boat might move past a 1929 Stephens Brothers Motor Launch, all flash
and dash and no class at all.
Mama Rosario held her
dignity as she brought the blonde a cup of coffee and offered it to her with an
air of gracious formality. When the woman asked if she was the keeper of the
keys (housekeeper) Rosario gave a tiny nod and a meaningful “No,” as she slid
out of the room gracefully.
Alejandro prowled in
looking like a lion that had spent too long in a tanning bed. He checked to see
who had come by his den. Montserrat was by his side, with a not unfriendly
smile.
“I am Alejandro
Almonte and this is my wife, Montserrat.”
“I am looking for Don
Benjamin Almonte,” said the woman in the black hat.
“My father died a year
and a half ago.”
Now, for the first
time, the woman looked a bit off-balance. “I understood…”
“You understood that
my father had no children.” Alejandro looked slightly irked. “Everyone assumed
that but it was not true.”
The woman had broad
shoulders, like a swimmer, and she looked elegant standing there in a long
black dress that might have been purpose-built to go with the hat. It was
clear that the hat was what was important in this outfit.
She got a knowing look
on her face and, almost under her breath she said, “My uncle died. Now I understand everything.”
Alejandro looked like
he had swallowed a bitter Chinese herbal concoction as he asked his cousin to
sit down. He said he had no idea that his father had other relatives.
“My name is Fabiola
Guillen Almonte.”
The woman responded by
reaching into her bag and bringing out a much folded and wrinkled photograph
and handing it to Alejandro. Her mother was Don Benjamin’s sister, she
explained as she handed the old color photo print over to Ale. She was the babe
in arms in the photo with Don Benjamin and her parents.
Mayor’s House
EZ Basurto was a
two-faced SOB at the best of times, and, in Aguazul, Campeche State, Mexico,
times had gotten real tough lately. The police chief sat comfortably in the
shade of the terrace facing Mayor Pedro Medina.
Medina ordered Basurto to investigate the situation with the child that
Graciela Mendoza had with Don Benjamin. Medina needed to know if she was alive,
and, if she was, they needed to get to her before anyone else does.
“Use your relationship
with Doña Carlota to find out
everything you can.”
Basurto beamed at his
master with the smug air of a poodle who knows he is going to win a special
treat.
Almonte Mansion,
Aguazul
Alejandro sourly
confirmed to Montserrat that the man in the photo was his father, Benjamin
Almonte. Although Alejandro was still polite enough, there wasn’t a lot of
warmth in his voice as he invited the woman Fabiola to sit down opposite he and
Montserrat.
The photo was a
treasured object, she explained with a grimace that might have been taken for
sentiment in another woman. But Fabiola was tough as nails and her social smile
looked no more sincere than that of Doña
Graciela Mendoza, Montserrat’s greedy and ruthless mother.
“My parents died right
after this in a terrible accident.”
He offered a
perfunctory apology for this bit of bad news, but Alejandro Almonte had been
hard-schooled in the way of professional con artists, by his own suegra. He did
not jump up and embrace the woman in the black hat.
Amalia Arechiga’s House,
Aguazul
Macario stared at
Amalia with his brow furrowed, his basset hound eyes concerned.
“Don Benjamin took the
baby to the United States,” Amalia said by way of explanation. Benjamin left
the baby with his sister and her husband and asked them to care for the baby
girl as if she was their own daughter.
Macario says that he
did not know that Don Benjamin had a sister. Amalia agreed with him. She
explained that very few persons knew of Benjamin’s sister. She got married at a
very young age and moved over to the US. It was very hard for her to get
pregnant and you can only imagine her happiness when her brother brought her
this little baby to raise, Amalia told Marcario.
Amalia’s face darkened
and she said, “Now the story becomes very sad. Don Benjamin’s sister and her
husband died in a terrible car accident.” Macario looked dismayed as Amalia
continued, “After this, Don Benjamin picked the little girl up and left her in
a boarding school. That is where she grew up. Poor thing.”
“Then why didn’t you
bring her back here?”
“Because Don Benjamin
did not want Graciela to know that the baby was still alive. Imagine, Macario!
She wanted to kill the girl! The child was a hindrance to her. Graciela did not
want Admiral Mendoza to know that she had a double life with Benjamin Almonte
before she married him.”
Macario shook his head
in wonder that Benjamin left nothing to the child in his will. Amalia was also
surprised—she only knew one thing—just a few hours before he died, Benjamin
changed his will and left everything to Alejandro. He always took care of his
daughter financially but he treated Alejandro like dirt, a worker on the
Hacienda.
Macario’s face showed
a troubled mix of emotions. “Does Padre Anselmo know?” he asked?
“No, he thinks the
baby died and it must stay that way. Now, she is here and she doesn’t know
anything either. She does not know that the man she called ‘Uncle’ her whole
life is her FATHER.”
Macario thinks that,
with respect to Amalia, the girl should be told the truth. But Amalia looks
extremely upset and she gesticulates wildly. “No, Macario!” The only reason
that she told Macario the secret is that she has been holding it in her chest
for so long. It is better that things stay as they are.
“I know Doña Graciela, Macario. I know what she is capable
of. If she finds out that her daughter is still alive,” Amalia trails off her
tale to Macario and plays an exaggerated shrug, ripe with implication.
Almonte Mansion,
Aguazul
Fabiola continued her
sad story to Ale and Montserrat. Her uncle paid for all her expenses in a
monthly allowance. He also paid for her education. Recently the checks had
stopped coming. Fabiola put her face down as she said that she could not
believe her Uncle had died. That is why she came to Mexico.
The brim of the black
hat hid Fabiola’s face as she spoke. But the hatband that seemed to be made of
brilliant Swarovski crystals shown and sparked in the light as Fabiola then
inquired about Don Benjamin’s will. Alejandro and Montserrat exchanged a pregnant
glance as Ale pointed out that Fabiola was not mentioned in the will. She
looked up quickly and said that she found this is very strange, as Benjamin
told her she was all he had and that she would be his only heir.
Ale gave out the news,
drip by drip, that old Ben had never recognized him, he is Ben’s illegitimate
son and Almonte only made Alejandro his heir in the last few hours of his
life—after talking to Padre Anselmo.
Fabiola’s hard look
was at extreme odds with her soft voice when she asked Ale if she had been
Ben’s only heir in the earlier will. Ale didn’t know; he was sure the lawyer
had a copy. Fabiola asked to see the old will. Montserrat gave her a look that
should have left a smoking hole in her forehead.
While Fabiola’s tale
unfolded other things were happening in Aguazul and it’s surrounds...
At the Mendoza Mansion,
Dimitrio had had it with his Mommy Dearest. He told Josefina to pack up their
things—he wanted to leave the house. He cannot stand to be in the same house as
his mother.
Josefa talked Dim out
of leaving the house by pointing out that they do not have a red cent between
them. They have nowhere else to go. Josefina told him he needed to get a job. Immediately.
At the Naval base,
Mayor Pedro Medina tried to throw his weight around as he talked to Capitan Robles.
He was very upset that Ale got out out on bail. He wanted Ale locked up and
given no extra considerations. Robles explained that they do not have the
evidence to detain Alejandro. Medina yelled that they have all the evidence
they need. The drugs were grown on Alejandro Almonte’s lands! But Robles said
that he does not believe that Ale is capable of being involved in such affairs.
Furthermore, Joaquin Arechiga freely confessed to the drug scheme but Robles
said he believed that Joaquin is hiding something. Plus, he asked the Navy to
provide security for his family in Aguazul.
The Mayor and the Navy
Captain then had a conversation about Jose Luis Alvarez being the correct
person to head the investigation against Almonte; HE would never take a bribe
from Alejandro. This offended Robles who asked if Pedro believed that a Naval
officer could be suborned to perjury. Of, course not, says Pedro, but the two
organizations would be required to share all information. Pedro said that he
would ask his Chief of Police, EZ Basurto, to work mano a mano with Lt.
Alvarez.
Almonte Mansion
Father Anselmo,
Rosario, Montse and Ale met to discuss Fabi’s bona fides. Padre Anselmo said
that yes, Benjamin had a sister—her name was Anastasia—but that woman died in
the US about 25 years ago. No one knew about the niece, including Father
Anselmo. The Father says that he told Benjamin himself that Alejandro was his
son, but Montserrat piped in that he never acknowledged Ale. She pointed out
that Ale never knew anything about Fabiola either. In a voice as dry as the
Sonora Desert, Montserrat then told Padre that they had all found out about the
secret that he had kept on behalf of her mother all these years. Padre Anselmo
confirmed that Don Benjamin has a daughter together but the baby died soon
aster it was born. Padre Anselmo had a look on his face that could curdle new
milk when he said, “Macario and I were the only ones to bury the poor thing.
Neither your Mother,” he looked at Montserrat, “Nor your father, Alejandro,
came to the cemetery.”
Arechiga Mansion
Fabiola blew into Amalia
Arechiga’s house like a fury. “Why didn’t you tell me that my Uncle had died?”
she demanded of Amalia. Amalia voice was a little sarcastic as she said, “Hi,
Fabiola. How are you? I haven’t seen you in years and you cannot even give me a
courtesy greeting?” Fabiola was not at all fazed as she said, “Hola, Amalia.
Now could you answer my question? Why didn’t you tell me that my Uncle had
died?”
“I tried to contact
you at the Rehab Center, but they told me you had left treatment early. Where
was I supposed to contact you?” Amalia asked reasonably.
Fabiola’s too-white teeth
snarled. She looked, at this moment, like nothing so much as a Mayan were-jaguar,
about to devour a human sacrifice. “I left that place because I detest being
locked up! I grew up in a boarding school and that place was worse than any
prison! Besides, I did not need rehab. I am cured.”
Amalia looked at
Fabiola with disbelief. “I do not believe you.”
Fabiola doesn’t care.
She demanded to know how her uncle had died.
“Alone, and very
sick,” replied Amalia.
Fabiola’s smile made
her look like the Welsh internet guy just as he was preparing to bit the head
off of a live chicken. “Good. But he wasn’t alone. Why didn’t you tell me about
Alejandro? I would have like to have know to be prepared.” Amalia explains that
she had been waiting for Fabiola to arrive, to tell her in person.
Now Fabiola ranted. “My
uncle left him ALL his money, Amalia. I should have been here to get some of
that inheritance!”
But Amalia is not
cowed by the rabid she-coyote. If Benjamin Almonte left her out of his will it
was her own fault. He knew about her life in Miami—the alcohol and the parties!
If he left her out of the will it was her own fault. Her voice invites Fab to
stay with her.
“Well what did my
uncle expect of me?’ screamed Fabiola. “He left me alone from the age of three.
He abandoned me. He never loved me. He took care of me financially because of
his guilt!
Amalia asked her where
she was staying tonight. Fabiola rented a hotel room, but Amalia said she would
like to help Fabio. Amalia invited Fabiola to stay with her at her home in
Aguazul.
“Thank you, Amalia,”
replied Fabio sarcastically, “But I have gotten used to being alone. All I want
now is money. I do not need a family. Could you write me a check? I spent my
last dollar getting here.”
Jose Luis and Refugio
talked about Capitan Robles’ orders JL was ordered to cooperate with Pedro
Median and his chief of police in the drug investigation. Both men think that
Medina and Basurto were in on the deal. They are corrupt. But Jose Luis acted
the hero when he said that all he knew was that those men wanted to destroy
Alejandro at any cost. JL said he believed that Ale was innocent and he would
help him personally. If he believes in his innocence it is his duty to do so.
Esme’s House
Nadia Medina visited
Esmeralda to apologize for her earlier mistakes. Nadia tells Esme that she
hates Pedro but she is afraid of him. She loves another man, Victor, and Pedro
tried to kill him once before. Pedro has told her he will never give her a
divorce. But her fear for and love of Victor keeps her with Pedro. Nadia
promises that she will keep Pedro from hurting Esme again. It is the least she
can do after everything Pedro did to Esme.
Jail, City Hall
Maria Zamudio was
rotting in is jail when EZ Basurto showed up like a Trojan, bearing gifts.
“What are you going to do to me?” she asked. EZ stared at Maria like a satisfied
sadist dissecting a live animal under a microscope. But Basurto told her that he
did not want to hurt her. He had instead, brought her many gifts, gifts from Pedro
Medina to apologize for keeping her locked up in a cell.
“Do you like the
gifts? “ Basurto leered “Then take them,
they are yours.” He laid down a new garment bag and a jewelry box. Maria, who
was still dressed in her dark green blouse and wrist bandages of several days
before, took the gifts. “Change your clothes,” slavered the short police chief.
“When you are ready we will go to see Medina.”
Basurto let himself out of Maria’s cell and stood on the other side of the bars staring at her. Then
he settled down to watch.
Alejandro and
Montserrrat enjoyed a little mini-honeymoon. They talked about Jose Luis,
again. Ale said he was trying to work on his jealousy issues, but he needed
Montse’s help. Ale asks Montserrat never to meet with Jose Luis alone. Ale
should be there, or his mother. She promises but he asks her to swear.
The Making of Maria
Zamudio
Pedro Media lit up a
cigar at the outdoor café. Maria Zamudio
approached him, dressed in her new clothes. He introduced himself and told her
he wanted her to enjoy herself. He had fine dishes for her and champagne on
ice. With some relish he told her that she doesn’t look like she enjoyed life
that much. She could think of this as her Last Supper. Maria protested that her
suicide attempt was just a foolish thing she did to get Alejandro Almonte’s
attention. She wants to live. She won’t say anything to anybody, ever.
But the Mayor reminded
her that she had stuck her nose into his business and that “curiosity killed
the cat.” Pedro questioned her closely about her relationship with Ale and her
role at the Hacienda. He heard that she was Ale’s lover while he was separated.
Was that true?
Maria’s reply was not
the truth nor was it a lie. “Alejandro was mine before Montserrat. She stole
the most important thing in the world from me.”
Pedro slowly got up
and walked around the table. He poured Zamudio a glass of champagne. “Tell me
of your story with Alejandro,” he invited her. “Your life depends on it. This
could be your Last Supper of a new day.”
Zamudio told the story
of Alejandro as a poor hacienda worker, who had always treated Maria as if she
was special. All they needed to be happy was two horses and the clear night
sky. Then he inherited money and everything changed. She accepted that she
could never get the old Alejandro back. Pedro proposed that Ale could lose
everything, his money, power, wife, and go back to being ‘her Aljandro’. What
would she do to see that happen?
“Anything.”
Medina set out his
conditions. From now on her every move would be calculated; controlled. First
he needed her to serve as a witness, to lie that not only did Alejandro know
about the drugs being planted on his lands, but that he was the mastermind
behind the scheme. He needs her to lie. He will protect her from Alejandro finding
out about her betrayal by making her testimony strictly confidential.
He told Maria that she
needed to go back to the house and be his eyes and ears on Alejandro. She would
have to testify against Ale when the time was right. “It won’t be easy getting
back into the house because of Montserrat,” Maria whined. Pedro scolded Maria
for her stupid move in trying to take the baby without the parents permission.
She needed to stop acting on instinct, like an animal, and learn to THINK. She
had only one advantage—Alejandro has been very worried about her. Ale thought
she needed help.
Maria was pleased by
this idea. Mayor Medina continued his instructions. He told Maria that
Alejandro would never think of abandoning her. Ale fears that she will try,
once again, to take her own life. But Maria Zamudio, whose countenance had
brightened considerably since the beginning of the dinner, swore that she would
never attempt suicide again.
“Unfortunealty, that
is the only ticket that will get you go back to living with him.” Medina said.
He snapped his fingers and a waiter brought out another covered dish. “They say
that revenge is a dish best served cold,” he said. He took the lid off of the
plate and revealed a pile of pills. “These pills will make you unconscious and
other things. It will be very painful. It is important that Alejandro think
that once again, you tried to kill yourself.”
“But I don’t want to
die!” cried Maria.
“You won’t die,” said
the diabolical Pedro Medina. “But I told you that you have to obey my orders.
Only then will I trust you. I order you to take those pills. In less than two
minutes you will pass out. If all goes well, you will wake up in a hospital
bed.”
Maria downed the pills
with another glass of champagne.
EZ Basurto now
appeared behind Maria as if on cue. “Basurto will make sure that Alejandro
comes to visit you.”
Maria Zamudio began to
moan and choke. Then she passed out with her head straight back. Basurto
tenderly held the back of her head while stroking her exposed and bare neck. He
smelled her bare skin. Medina ordered EZ to pay off the waiters and to call
‘Fofito’. He would know what to do.
Pedro Medina went home
to his lavish mansion. His first night as Pygmalion had gone very well indeed.
Hotel Room, Aguazul
Fabiola arrived back
to her hotel room with a slam of the door. A handsome black-haired man was
waiting for her, drinking a glass of red wine. He is called Sandro. Fabio gave
him the news; her uncle was dead and he had left everything to an illegitimate
son. The man remarked that this news must have come as quite a surprise. He did
not help her or come all the way from Miami for this.
Fabiola took the wine
from Sandro. She plunged her face into the vino like a drosophila melanogaster
plunging into a glass of standing orange juice.
Sandro told Fabiola
that Alejandro was her only family, he had to take her in. He would go see
Alejandro tomorrow, pretending to be her attorney and convince Ale to let
Fabiola live with him. Once she was in the house, they would come up with a scheme.
Fabiola and Sandro kissed passionately but her hand never left the glass of
wine.

To say that this was a pivotal episode is a colossal understatement. Good grief. I do not think I have ever spent so many hours on a recap.
I covered the reveal of the "Great secret" in some detail, because there were many plot points resolved here, and several more set up.
The story of Pedro and EZ drawing Maria into their hideous web deserved an episode by itself. I was like watching a horror story unfold before my eyes. Shudder.
Naturally, the side plot got short shrift in this treatment.
I hope you all enjoy the recap of the Great Reveal. The writers outfoxed us this time by bringing in Graciela and Benjamin's hell spawn from teh United States.

I covered the reveal of the "Great secret" in some detail, because there were many plot points resolved here, and several more set up.
The story of Pedro and EZ drawing Maria into their hideous web deserved an episode by itself. I was like watching a horror story unfold before my eyes. Shudder.
Naturally, the side plot got short shrift in this treatment.

Shudder ,now that Maria allied with Pedro all hell will break loose .Fabiola by looks is addicted to alchohol and i like seeing Fransisco Gattorno again! I like how Amelia stood her own against the vibora Fabiola,even taunting her.

What a twist that Amelia knew the baby survived and that Ben gave her to his sister to raise. I was glad to see a familiar face from AV , but now Dances with Sunglasses will be Dances with Drunk Chicks . Just what we needed...more villains. Meh
Carlos will be saddened to see that MALria has definitely partnered with Pedro and EZ on the dark side. Watching her willing swallow those pills with a glass of bubbly was disturbing.
So...will MALria and new Prima both be moving in with the Almontes ? YIKES ...talk about a den of vipers. If Gracie discovers this is her daughter, will she help her get the inheritance ? That twosome would make a nasty team.

Oh, Elna, amazing, this was like reading a novel, you are a writer, correct? I am going to savor this all morning with some coffee.
Want to comment-once Maria was medicated, did anyone notice EZ fondling Maria's face similar to the way he fondled "Fofo's" head a couple of episode's ago-I suddenly remembered what it reminded me of. "What a delightful little dog!" Said the Wicked Witch of the West as she stroked Toto's fur.
Read Eli's recap yest, loved it. My sympathies to you; we lost my Father in law last week and my mother in law is critically ill and it has been such a bad time I haven't had time but to read a little and comment occasionally, but it sound's like many of the bloggers and recappers are having similarly bad times! So nice the way everyone is supporting each other with thoughts and prayers!

I still think that Fabiola is an impostor and/or a grifter. She could have murdered the original Fabiola or assumed her identity after an accidental death or something. This will be a distraction during the upcoming nastiness with Maria.
If there is a hospital scene to come, Monserrat should absolutely stand her ground and insist that Maria be put in a facility. If she were truly suicidal a second attempt would demand that. Considering her own unwitnessed interactions with Maria this would be the only thing that makes sense.

That would have been very dark Urban and very cold,evil but because we have villians on that caliber that could happen

The real event last night was the revelation of the depth and breadth of evil Pedro Medina is capable of. I did feel sorry for BM for a moment because she really did not have a choice but to take the pills. Pedro's description as this being her "last supper or the eve of a new dawn" said it all. How can Pedro be stopped in his reign of corruption and terror? Is there a specialty anvil being forged right now with his name on it?
I was impressed by JL's decision to help Alejandro because he believes in his innocence and it is his duty.
Esme uttered her second "Wow" when she found out that Pedro tried to kill Victor. She is really good delivering that one word. Very funny as a matter of fact.
The highlight of last night's episode was Alejandro in his light aqua shirt that looked so good next to his tan!

Elna June, this was extraordinary. I cannot fathom how much time it took to create this masterpiece, but the results were brillant and fascinating.
"all flash and dash and no class at all", "but Alejandro Almonte had been hard-schooled in the way of professional con artists, by his own suegra" and "plays an exaggerated shrug, ripe with implication" were but a few amazing lines.
As you so sagely noted "The story of Pedro and EZ drawing Maria into their hideous web deserved an episode by itself. I was like watching a horror story unfold before my eyes. Shudder." Exactly! This was a lurid, grotesque horror novel that came to life all too clearly and vividly.
The last scene of EZ staring through the bars of Maria's cell showed for an all too brief a moment, a true monster. He and Pedro are sickening yet mesmerizing as their evilness and cruelty seems to grow with each passing hour. And as much as I abhor Maria's past actions, they have lured a not so innocent but yet still undeserving woman into their insidious plot. I agree Susanlynn, watching Maria swallow those pills (served on a silver platter literally) was disgusting and sickening. I fear they have robbed Maria of any chance of redemption. For that alone, may they rot.
Enjoyed watching Ale's cool recption of Fab and Monse's obvious emotions of disdain flitting across her face.
My JL is determined to help Ale. He is once again the man I thought so highly of Now please, go back and lavish love and attention on your deserving wife. And Robledo, please get a clue. I think we need a visit from Pru to set you on the right track (again).

Wow, you did indeed put a lot of work into this, Elna June. I started out jotting down your great comparisons and descriptions but got writer's cramp! So I'm just going to note a few:

The "Ick" factor really ramped up last night watching Maria, Pedro and the chief Lap Dog. I could swear my TV screen begins to slime over when these guys appear. Looks like Maria is joining the dark side, well at this point I think she dug a hole she can't get out of. Sad that somehow she doesn't realize that if she does what Pedro wants, she would make Ale HATE her and would hardly make him want to take her back.
So what job will Dim take? I would crack up if whatever it was, he turned out to enjoy it and maybe be good at it? Now there would be a twist worth watching.

Vivi: As for secret evidence, Anonymous declarations are a thing ,if you ever heard of witness protection i think that is what Pedro was referring to.As for if the accused has the right to know who his accuser is,it depends from case to case. You could have a smoke in the balcony and an unknown neibghour can report you and you might never know the cowards identity.

Fabiola...I would call her Fab, but that conjures up memories of our beloved Captain DamFab. Maybe she could be Damnedfab because we all know that , in the end, she will be damned and not prevail. I did see the connection to the British sitcom Absolutely Fabulous , and I think that this girl would not turn down a glass of Absolute vodka.
Esme is the queen of the one liner..."Wow!", but I would like to see her mix it up with a "Yikes!" now that the potential for villainy has escalated.
I need a little emotional relief from this depressing storyline. Mony and Ale and Rosario and Lauro finally seem to be settling down to happiness,,,then BAMMED...more trouble starts to bubble. We need some smart, efficient, powerful good guys to balance the increased evil.
The thought of Carlotta getting involved with despicable EZ is very disturbing. She has endured a lifetime of insults and abuse from her sister in law. She does not deserve to be EZ's victim. HELP

As I watched this episode last night, I thought about what an absolute bear it was going to be to recap because it was 100% exposition. [Normally all this material would have been revealed over the course of at least a few episodes, but for some reason, it was all spewed out in one evening.] So it was a huge challenge for a recapper just to get it all down.
But you, my dear, chose not only to get it all down, but do it in an ill-lit office on an old Underwood typewriter, ashes dropping from a cigarette hanging precariously from your lips. When the broad in the black hat "rushed past Rosario as a narcotraficante cigarette boat might move past a 1929 Stephens Brothers Motor Launch, all flash and dash and no class at all," I started to giggle. And I didn't stop until "Fabiola and Sandro kissed passionately but her hand never left the glass of wine."
Oh Elna June! I can imagine how it feels to have given birth to this beauty. This is the kind of recap where you get a few hours into it and you wish you had never started it but there's no going back and it would take longer to start all over than to keep going so you do push through until the bitter end and by then you're not even sure what you wrote.

Pedro and Basura are depraved and sick men. I don't like The Whore Maria, but Elna June you so very perfectly conveyed the sickness that describes these two men and the sad sickness of Maria.
With all of the horribly sick, nasty, and dysfunctional people in this TN, did the writers really need to give us this interloper called Fabiola?! Yeah, sure, it's part of the Graciela story line, but just how many more ugly people do we need in one story?!
If I could, I want to go back to the wedding episode of a few days ago. I have seen it three times now. I think it was a beautiful wedding. Alejandro looked so incredibly handsome in his suit. That suit was a perfect choice for him. I could not get over the beautiful and loving looks Montserrat gave him throughout. I would hope to have such a beautiful and elegantly understated wedding.
I thought Rosario looked like a queen next to the horrific outfit and hairdo worn by the mother of the bride. Why is it that some women of a certain age wear these kinds of hairdos thinking that it makes them look younger? Graciela looked like a joke.
I hope that Padre Anselmo's blessing and words to Alejandro and Montserrat will carry them through the horrific torment that is to come. They are being bombarded on all sides. They need the protection from above.
The one scene that sticks in my mind, however, is the one of Graciela sitting on her bed crying after her Bebe Dimwit has told her he is done with her. Graciela looked like a crazy woman crying on that bed. It almost seemed like a foreshadowing of what is to come...a future alone, penniless, and living either in a hovel or some manicomio. That is my own prediction and not a spoiler.
There is some real sickness being shown here in this TN. It is hard to watch. I believe that Maria IS the dark side and have always thought that, but she has now sealed her fate. Her misguided illusions and delusions are going to harm the very man she claims to love. I wonder what her future hell will be.

One thing that bugged me during this episode is Maria swallowing the pills with alcohol. Any drug that can do what Pedro said this would do would be deadly with alcohol. Granted, we're talking about champagne and not tequila, but this is something people are told not to risk.

Well, I didn't see this coming but WOW! These writers continue to draw us into this web of storytelling they are doing! I too like FG and happy to see him here, even though this time he is a real bad hat. I have only ever seen Lissette in a good role, never a bad one. She is bringing it.
I think Fabless has a lot of Don Benny and Graceless rolled into one. When she was giving Amelia what for I could see Graceless in her eyes and body language. I really want to see how she is going to get some of Ale's inheritance. She is a ticking time bomb.
YAY for JL. Refugio needs to STFU and let JL do his job. I am not liking the fact that JL has to cooperate with EZ and Pedro. But at least JL knows how bad they are and will watch his p's and q's with them.
How ironic was Pedro when he gives that plate to BM and tells her revenge is a dish best served cold with pills on it no less, and she actually took them. She not only has gone to the dark side, she's come undone completely!
So glad that Nadia and Esme are talking. I am glad that Nadia apologized to Esme and that Esme now knows what life with Pedro is really like. Maybe together they can come up with a plan.
Where is Tia Pru? She needs to get with her brother and talk some sense into him. Now Pedro knows that Joaquin may open his mouth. Will Pedro continue with the "accident" he has in store for Ginny? I am really hoping Ginny stays safe.

I think Fabless has a lot of Don Benny and Graceless rolled into one. When she was giving Amelia what for I could see Graceless in her eyes and body language. I really want to see how she is going to get some of Ale's inheritance. She is a ticking time bomb.
YAY for JL. Refugio needs to STFU and let JL do his job. I am not liking the fact that JL has to cooperate with EZ and Pedro. But at least JL knows how bad they are and will watch his p's and q's with them.
How ironic was Pedro when he gives that plate to BM and tells her revenge is a dish best served cold with pills on it no less, and she actually took them. She not only has gone to the dark side, she's come undone completely!
So glad that Nadia and Esme are talking. I am glad that Nadia apologized to Esme and that Esme now knows what life with Pedro is really like. Maybe together they can come up with a plan.
Where is Tia Pru? She needs to get with her brother and talk some sense into him. Now Pedro knows that Joaquin may open his mouth. Will Pedro continue with the "accident" he has in store for Ginny? I am really hoping Ginny stays safe.

Ah, my dear, you did this dark episode delicious justice! Ooooh! I wish I were reading it next to a crackling fire with a thunderstorm wailing and banging the shutters. . . .but nah! it's just 4 feet of snow! Loved it, loved it, loved it! The recap, not the episode. Oh, it was well acted and all and no surprise that FabNOT is Gracie and Ben's. I don't hate her yet, she was done wrong by her "father" and could hardly turn out any other way than she has. I just don't look forward to all the eeevil that's about to ooooze into Aguazul.

Elna June, The Foundling's Tale is absolutely fascinating. As I was reading I could see you up late and bleary-eyed, intent on finishing your masterpiece. I think our NovelaMaven gave an alarmingly accurate description of what drives a recapper to do their best. You, my dear, have exceeded even your superior standards. Yowza, what an episode! So much happened and I truly appreciate you describing everything in such vivid detail. Pretty much all my favorite lines have been mentioned, but I did make Mr. S jump when I loudly guffawed at EZ's "smug air of a poodle" crack.

I doubt that Graceless would have sent Fabiola any money. She and Dimitrio (I may stop calling him Dimwit based on how his behavior plays out over the next half dozen episodes to my next turn) have decimated the family finances all by their selfish selves.
In the flashback about Rosario's rape we saw Benjamin getting angry with Graceless on the phone when she told him she was going to marry someone else. We don't know at what point that call was made vis a vis her pregnancy. What I see happening is this:
Graceless saw the opportunity to marry into the Mendoza family which was socially prominent in Aguazul; Benjamin Almonte was likely an upstart, self-made man without social refinement. She may not have been aware yet that she was knocked up. She broke it off with him, he took out his double-barreled anger on Rosario and her fiance, then framed Rosario for killing Jacinto.
Graceless handed the allegedly dead baby to Macario or... perhaps she ordered him to kill her (Snow White, anyone?). But Macario being the sort of person he is couldn't do it. He brought the baby to Amelia, who arranged for the baby to be taken far away. Whether she told Benjamin that this baby was his is not clear, but she knew that his sister had problems conceiving.
All of which assumes that Fabiola is or is impersonating the actual daughter of Benjamin and Graceless. There could also have been a baby switch somewhere along this trail and Maria is still the daughter of Benjamin.

Will Adolfito join the good guys ? Gracie seems to be the only kid on the playground who hasn't been picked to join a team. The Big Cheesie stands all alone for now.

Jarifa: I am glad you enjoyed the more colorful noir-style descriptions I used in the recap. I always think that Mexican telenovelas put a great emphasis on 'sangre' or nature vs. nurture. By those standards, and, as you said so well, two morally corrupt parents, this girl was meant to be bad.
Diana: You are such a kind woman! You really know how to make a recapper feel appreciated. This blasted recap took many hours and when I read it this morning all I could see was that it read like a first draft, attendant with typos, grammos and misspellings. That is, of course, true. A first draft is all we have time for and I cannot edit my own writing anymore. Your words made me feel 'seen' from across the miles.
Most of the recappers do not talk about this but for many of us recapping is a slow process, very time consuming indeed. I always think, "Well, I am here to improve my Spanish, that is why I do this." While that may all be true, having our time commitment honored by you is a sweet reward for all of the hard work. I'm disappointed that María isn't the mystery daughter... there were so many possibilities that would have offered... but I'm devastated that María is now within Pedro's clutches. The deal he offered her was not very appealing... Alejandro broke and in prison but at least Montserrat won't have him either... what? She appeared to have no alternative, but she should have started screaming bloody murder making Zeke choose between a beautiful woman and a crazy whateverpedrois.

I wouldn't put it past Graceless, once she finds out that Fabiola is her daughter (not IF, but WHEN) to try to "team" up with her to take all of Ale's fortune and then insist on being taken care of because, after all, she IS HER MOTHER, right? EJ- It’s barely mid-day, but I see my Caraymates have already pulled out and highlighted some of the gems from your recap. I’ll just say it was fantastic and I appreciate the details and time you put into it.
I can’t see any reason to believe that Fab is a fake. Amelia and she know each other—there was no moment of, “Hey I haven’t seen you since you were 12, Fabi, is that really you?” They knew each other immediately, Fabi knew where she lived, and there’s enough familiarity between them for Amelia to invite Fab to stay with her, and for Fabi to ask for straight up hard cash instead. Girlfriend certainly has chutzpah! She has certainly inherited the character of her parents, if not their money. I also wonder what the original will said.
We’ve got a lot of episodes to go, people. They need to bring in new blood, and Lisette and FG are two actors I enjoy so I’m looking forward to what they bring to this crazy plot.

It was uncomfortable to watch Pedro toying with Maria’s life. It reminded me of a cat who bats around a mouse he has caught before finally killing it.

Speaking of double standards, I did chuckle last episode when Fina demanded the Dimi get a job, but said nothing about getting one herself. This tn continues its trend of the ONLY working women between exotic dancers and maids. Can we please get just one female professional? Is it too much to ask in 2014? I know what the original source material was, but they have now largely veered away from the original story, so why not show real 21st century women?
Coke and red wine? I've never heard of that. Back in the late 60s coke was mixed with cognac in Europe. That was OK by me back then except now I'm inclined to want to keep them separate. Why mess up good cognac?
BTW, a great combo is Coke with Manhattan Special. Or the alcoholic version, Coke with Kahlua. Or the summer teetotaler version of coke on coffee ice cubes.

Did you wonder, JudyB, at the cut in time time between Tomas yelling at Josefina and her showing up at the Mendoza mansion with her maletas? For a moment there, since we saw no segue and only had Josefa's report of the dialogue, I wondered if Josefina had not concocted a scheme with her brother to put Dimitrio to the test by moving back in with him.

Recapping usually takes a very long time, even on a fast night or when doing it "on the fly" so to speak. AB and SR are great in scenes when they are fighting or getting it on. But I still feel that AB lacks a certain amount of warmth and authenticity when it comes to tender/loving (non-sex) scenes. It comes off being too sugary and fake. I can SEE her acting. Hopefully, she’ll improve with time and more roles. I get bored when Monse and Ale are alone being lovey dovey (and I never got bored with Camila and Dan in Amor Bravio, for example).

I caught an episode of Pasion today. What a good novela . It has so many of our favorites. DC(Gracie) played a nasty blind girl. She married a particularly awful villain named Lafont. There were so many handsome actors..FC, Marcelo Cordoba, William Levy, Sebastian Rulli. WOW. a plethora of pretty faces...the actresses are pretty, too.

Last weeks storm still left us at 25% of normal rainfall. The storm wouldn't last long—they never do—and then we could sit out by the pool and have a cuppa or a glassa and fix all of the problems of Aguazul. I am so sorry to hear that you have 4 feet of snow on the ground. I grew up near Lake Tahoe and I know how hard it is to deal with so much snow and ice.

Im not suprised that Maria allied with Pedro ,ever since the attempted murder and the kidnapping attempt i lost all faith in her redemption.Now she is basicly trapped ,if she betrays Pedro he will kill her and she also has this revenge stuck in her stupid head ,she struck the deal with Satan himself.The funny thing is Dionisio was ussualy called El Diablo by our dear recappers but he fails to compare to Pedro.Sergio Sendel will definetly win the Best Main Villian role this year.

It seems that the writers listened to us viewers/commenters in one thing (although I'm sure they had planned it all along). When Pedro Medina and E Basura first appeared they were being overshadowed by the earlier villains (Graciela, Bruno Gamboa, Juventino, Loreto) and we all wondered why such excellent actors as Sergio Sendel and Alexis Ayala were being underutilized and seemed to be peripheral characters (mumbling, non-cell-phone-throwing SS and buffoonish lusting-after-the-dancer police chief Basurto. Well ... now we know ... boy, how we know!

Anon, I was just thinking the same thing about Medina and Basurto. Boy howdy are they ever showing their true colors! I'm glad those two terrific actors (who are terrific at being BAD) are finally getting to show it.
EJ, La Paz is a delightful place for the most part. Carnaval wrapped up a couple of days ago and Mr. S and I just got back from several days in La Ventana (truly in the boonies) where he took kiteboarding lessons. I was having Caray Caray withdrawals so badly I would get up at 2:00 a.m., when the internet was working, to check for recaps and find out what happened, LOL! Guess I am addicted. Anyhoo, I will have wifi for a while longer but once we leave La Paz checking into The Patio will be a crap shoot. I am making a note of episodes I want to watch later and #82 is definitely one of them! Thanks again for the noir treat; definitely one of my favorite genres.

Anon at 3:18 I have been thinking the same thing. I'm not sure how these little dramas are written but what if they pay attention to the Mexican forums and tweak the course of the story as they go along? We're two weeks behind so in our case I think they're just a lot of smart people on here who figure things out and do excellent analyses of the characters. That's fun all in itself.

That way when he eventually finds out that it was BM that brought him down, the betrayal would feel a thousand times worse. Because Ale has always done everything to protect her, and she in turn has only found ways to hurt him time and time again. NEXT!
