Lo Que la Vida Me Robó Lunes 3/1014 #84

Chapter 84: The Lady Vanquishes

Almonte Townhouse: Lady Monserrat demanded that her mother explain how she came to have a daughter with Lord Benjamin Almonte. Countess Graceless insisted that she had no right to know this, but Lady Monserrat would not relent. A crocodile's tears are still visible, and Countess Graceless shed hers as she explained that she had fallen into a delicate condition in a time when the obvious current solution was not possible. When she gave birth to a baby girl she decided that it would be best to put her up for adoption. However she died shortly after birth and the hairs Countess Graceless saved were all she had of her. She had not been aware that modern science could disclose not only the parentage but the gender of the hair's donor. Lady Monserrat had spoken to Father Anselmo who had explained that he and Macario had buried the infant. Her sister. She asked whether her mother had ever visited the burial place and Countess Graceless tearfully told her she had never had the courage to do so. It was a wound that would never heal, she cried.

Her wails were too intense to be sincere. Perhaps sensing her daughter's doubts she then told her that had the Admiral been aware of her previous relations with Lord Benjamin and the existence of this dead infant he would never have married her, as her perceived purity was that important to him. Lady Monserrat did not miss the meaning of this, pointing out that this revelation would have meant the end of her business arrangement because – contrary to any previous account she had been told – “You married my father for his money, not for love!” Countess Graceless tried once again to deny this accusation, but her daughter proved implacable. “You never loved my father and neither did you love Lord Benjamin because your only true love is money, Mama!”

Lady Monserrat stared into her mother's eyes until Countess Graceless turned away and sat on the couch. “What do I do now?” she asked. “Where do I go? Moreover, what of your Aunt Carlota, Dimitrio, and Josefina? Her brother took away her inheritance! Dimitrio is the only one of us who can work and that will not be enough to pay the bills on the house.”

The shock was only momentary for Lady Monserrat who replied “As to Aunt Carlota, she can come to us. Alejandro and I will always take care of her. Dimitrio is responsible for his wife. I will not take in my brother.”

And what of me? I am your mother!” was the reaction. “You would take care of your aunt over me?”

I am very sorry you have no children left to sell,” Lady Monserrat pronounced. “But you are young yet, and beautiful. I'm sure you can find a man who can maintain you. But I recommend that you not hesitate because beauty sooner or later goes away. You are so empty that you cannot offer anything else to anyone.”

Countess Graceless, as she had perhaps many times before, hauled off to strike her daughter in the face, but Lady Monserrat stopped her without dropping her gaze from the pits of her mother's eyes. She pushed her back, her chin firmly set to match her unblinking stare. Countess Graceless touched her own head saying “Forgive yourself,” in an offended tone before turning and departing. Lady Monserrat watched her leave with a silent inner lament that her mother was a woman of such ignoble sentiments.

Hospital, Maria's Room: Father Anselmo sat at the bedside, listening to Maria's planned speech about not wanting to hurt baby Lauro and commenting on what a beautiful child he was. How fragile, miraculous, and everything else she knew the good priest wanted to hear. For Father Anselmo was a man of God who wanted to see good in people, especially those whom he had known almost from birth. He enquired whether her repentance was sincere. He remembered being present at her birth, baptising her, and giving her her First Communion. She had lost her way since her father died, he was certain. She was asking Lord Alejandro to forgive her. She also wanted to ask Lady Monserrat.

Medina Manor: Lady Nadia arrived home and reclined on the bed, only to see her husband in his robe. He informed her he was about to change for an appointment and to her surprise that she was not to accompany him. She was merely seeking to perform her duty as his wife. He attempted to correct her, that she was not doing so because she was not yet in a delicate condition. She corrected him, that she did indeed desire to bear the child of the man she loved only to hear him sully this sentiment with his insistence that the child be presented as his and that her relations with Sir Victor would end immediately and permanently.

She then demanded two conditions in return which she would not have him deny her. If he went back on his word she would do what it took to destroy his political career even at risk to her life. He remained as calm as was possible for him as he asked what she wanted. She stood up and told him he was to leave Esmeralda Ramos alone. If he were to threaten her or raise a hand against her it would all be over. He was bemused, almost slightly amused that his lady wife would come to the defense of a woman of ill repute. She replied that Esmeralda was no prostitute and that her only mistake was to accept the devil's bargain of pretending to have been his mistress. He agreed, but told her that the consequences would fall on her if Esmeralda said anything at all. He then attempted to dismiss her so he could dress, saying that there was nothing more to say.

Lady Nadia did not accept this, saying that there was one more thing. Seeing that it was useless to provoke an argument he said he was disposed to be civil to her at that moment. He asked what she wanted and she told him she wanted him to tell her the truth for once in their marriage. She needed to have him tell her who he really was. She needed to know why he had never touched her, why their marriage had never been consummated, why he despised her as a woman. What was his accursed problem? He stared back, his eyes becoming paler and more deranged in expression.

Almonte Townhouse: Lord Alejandro arrived home and upon embracing his lady wife knew that something serious was amiss. She told him they would speak of this later before enquiring about Maria. He informed her that Maria was better and that he would be returning to see her in the hospital on the morrow and she would soon be released. The implication was not lost on Lady Monserrat who immediately asked where Maria would be going. Knowing that this would not go well, he replied that Maria wished to see her and speak with her. Lady Monserrat declared she would have none of this. She almost declared her husband mad to think she would grant an audience to a woman who attempted to harm their son. He merely asked that she speak with her and listen as he was certain that Maria had regretted her actions. He wanted her to know this so they could open their home to her upon her release. He had been told by the attending alienist that Maria could not be left alone as she had no remaining family. They would have her stay with them for a few weeks.

Lady Monserrat calmly looked into his eyes as she told him, “Very well; it is your home” before calling for Dominga, who entered immediately. She then bade her “Pack all my things and my son's. We are leaving at this moment.”

Dominga was shocked, but turned to comply. Lord Alejandro was indignant, telling her she was not to do this. He then declared that Maria was only going to stay with them for a short time. He wanted to do the best he could for her. Lady Monserrat told him he had every right to do this, but reminded him that she would not have Maria under the same roof. She then repeated her instructions to Dominga. He stopped Dominga by saying that if she complied they would have serious problems.

He reminded his lady wife that her place was with him. She then told him that in view of this he would need to find another way to help Maria. He had insisted that she never speak alone with Lieutenant Alvarez and she had accommodated his demand by only receiving him in the presence of Lady Rosario. In return she demanded that he not bring Maria into their home. Dominga clearly approved Her Ladyship's demand, saying she agreed with her. Lord Alejandro, not liking being outnumbered, ordered Dominga back to the kitchen. She exited but not without briefly encouraging Her Ladyship to stand her ground. After she left, Lord Alejandro complied. He only asked in return that she visit Maria in the hospital on the morrow. The argument concluded, they began some more amorous business not unsuitable to the time of day.

Medina Manor: The Lord Mayor tried to dismiss the importance of this disclosure. After some impatient words of Lady Nadia's regarding why he despised her as a woman he said that all women were the same to him, finally saying he could not risk exposing himself. At her confusion he at last explained he said that he was incomplete. Twenty years previously he had suffered a motorcycle accident and was haemorrhaging from an injury to his male parts. The doctor saved his life by amputating them. He would have preferred to die rather than live this way. The irony of it was that several years later the offending surgeon suffered a similar accident, but with a difference; he did not survive it. From the expression on his face Lady Nadia realized in that moment that he had arranged for this event. She said so; his reply was “I am not saying that.”  However, he made a slight nod, which told Lady Nadia what she needed to know.

Valverde Manor: Sandro Narváez stood in the bright cream-coloured parlour, examining some objet d'art when Sir Tomás entered and greeted him with much enthusiasm. Apparently the visitor had been born in Aguazul and had not been back in some time. The two men had been previously acquainted over a matter of business and Sir Tomás commented that it was fortuitous that they met in Aguazul, as he normally resided in the capital. Mr Narváez related that he was there with a client on a matter concerning an inheritance, which his host correctly guessed was considerable and therefore important enough for his attention. He then told him that indeed, it was a large estate and furthermore his client was a beautiful woman. Sir Tomás was not surprised at this news.

Mr Narváez did not delay longer in beginning his enquiry, asking whether his host was acquainted with Lord Alejandro. Sir Tomás, his mind ever working, answered in the affirmative and realized in that moment that it was the Almonte estate of which his guest spoke. He advised him that he would need some assistance with this as the situation was somewhat complicated in view of the Navy's investigation. He then proved himself to be no gentleman in the airing of the extended family's dirty laundry, or such that he was aware of including what he knew of the difficulty between Lord Alejandro and Lieutenant Alvarez. Mr Narváez correctly surmised that their duel was fought over Lady Monserrat. The only details that Sir Tomás omitted was those he knew of his own sister's marriage. He was tarring the entire family with one rather dirty brush.

Medina Manor: Lady Nadia demanded to know why her husband had deceived her. Why he had married her knowing that they would not be able to have children. This was not cricket. He had decided upon meeting her that she would be the perfect wife for him and had courted her for two years. He was certain she would never have accepted him had she known the full truth. She told him he was mistaken, that they could have found a solution. She had loved him. As it was she was profoundly hurt by his rejection, felt that she had failed as a wife and as a woman. With a pained expression he opened his robe and asked of her whether she would have accepted him.

Her expression of shock was unaccompanied by words. He spoke of being ridiculed and did this sight disgust her? Tearfully she said it was not disgust but pain. She turned away from his shame, allowing him to cover himself. She finally took a deep breath then turned back to tell him how sorry she was that this had happened to him and she would now leave him to dress for his meeting. As she slowly walked out he shouted that he was more man than others. He had money and power. He was Lord Mayor of Aguazul and would not stop until he was governor of the state. No one would stand in his way. Lady Nadia did not turn back to look at him. Though she could hear it in his voice she did not see the madness in his face, nor would she permit him to see her sense of despair.

Valverde Manor: The two men sat drinking cocktails as Mr Narváez pretended to decline Sir Tomás' invitation to stay at the manor. The doorbell interrupted them and the maid escorted Countess Graceless into the parlour. She was not expected but Sir Tomás was not inhospitable. He introduced them and Mr Narváez approached and extended his hand. With his customary show of directness he enquired whether she was the mother of Lady Monserrat. She answered in the affirmative, asking when he had met her daughter. He told her that it had been that morning, commenting on Lady Monserrat's beauty and that he saw its origins. Countess Graceless appeared somewhat flattered but betrayed very little. Sir Tomás directed the maid to show his guest to the his suite so he could rest. He was to be accorded the best accommodation.

Mr Narváez left his host alone with his unexpected – and we can be certain unwelcome – guest, who immediately enquired as to his identity. Sir Tomás explained that he was a lawyer from Miami with whom he previously shared business matters. That he was wealthy and a bachelor. He did not appear to detect the importance of that information to Countess Graceless as she enquired how long his associate would be in town. He replied that he did not yet know then changed the subject to the purpose of her visit.

She told him he should not leave his sister defenseless. He replied that Lady Josefina was now her husband's responsibility, not his. At the accusation that Sir Tomás had stolen his sister's fortune he corrected her, saying that he was protecting it from being bled dry by Countess Graceless' son. She managed to remain calm despite this [well-deserved] insult. He explained with perfect honesty that his only interest was for his sister to cease deluding herself that she could have a proper marriage with her son. He was interested in ending it. She told him she was equally interested in the same goal and he enquired as to her price.

Almonte Townhouse: Father Anselmo was taking his leave of Lady Monserrat, as he had been away from his parish for several days. He was concerned for his parishioners but was apprehensive at leaving while Lord Alejandro's legal problems were not yet resolved. Lady Monserrat attempted to allay his fears on that matter, that she was certain this would shortly be put to rest, especially since Lieutenant Alvarez was assisting. Father Anselmo was not certain that the rivalry and bad sentiments were at an end. Lady Monserrat told him she was not anxious over this, as Lieutenant Alvarez was an honest man with a sense of justice. Unlike others, whose intent she questioned. He entreated her to see Maria and not to judge her so harshly. She had made many mistakes but she was not entirely at fault. Lord Alejandro needed to accept some responsibility for it. Lady Monserrat agreed to speak with Maria, as she had previously told her husband. Father Anselmo then told her that although she may not believe it, he prays for both of them.

Medina Manor: Lady Nadia stood in her parlour, uncertain what to think or do. Her husband came down the stairs closing his shirt cuffs on the way. She asked once more if he wished her to accompany him and he declined her offer. However, he approached her and seizing her hair told her that if anyone were ever to find out what he had just told her he would kill her with his own hands. He then symbolically released her with a small show of force and departed. She knew in that instant that she was perhaps no better off for knowing the truth, at least for the moment.

Mendoza Manor: Countess Graceless went directly to her bedchamber to find Lady Carlota waiting for her. This did not please her in the least. Lady Carlota was waiting to discuss the matter of the baby daughter she bore to Lord Benjamin. Countess Graceless refused to do so, saying that this matter was none of her concern. It would have been her brother's, but he is dead. She had already spoken of this with her children. The final insult she delivered that night was to tell her “To me you are nobody and I don't have to justify anything to you.”

If only you had a minimum of decency, of dignity” replied Lady Carlota.

I will remind you that your dear brother left this house to me. This house, its furniture, all of this is mine, Carlota.” she said. “I am the lady of this manor. You stayed here for Monserrat and her baby. They are now gone and so should you be. If you find this so repugnant why do you not leave so I don't have to look at you?”

Here now are my nephew and Josefina. I've been apart from him for so long and he is now fighting to change. I will be here to help him and above all to prevent you from hurting Josefina and from interfering in their marriage. Because although this hurts you in the extreme, this woman is the best thing that could have happened to your son.”

Ay, Carlota, what affection you have!” Graceless said sarcastically as Carlota left her room. However, Graceless' own discomfort was not yet quelled.

Lady Josefina waited her husband's return in the foyer, concerned that she had been unable to reach him all the day. He explained that he had been seeking employment all day and was tired. He wished to retire at that moment. He caressed her face briefly before ascending the stairs.

The Following Day

Mendoza Manor: Dimwit was exiting to be caught by Lady Josefina before he departed for what he anticipated would be another difficult day. She was concerned that he had not adequately breakfasted, but made little of this. He caressed her face once again before departing although he had declined to kiss her. Lady Carlota then entered, asking whether she would like to accompany her on her morning constitutional. Lady Josefina declined her offer, saying they can do this another time, as she had something she needed to do. She then took her purse and departed.

Hospital, Maria's Room: Lady Monserrat knocked before entering. She stood at the foot of the bed, looking directly at Maria and declined her invitation to sit. She clearly told her she was listening. Maria, with the same tears as Countess Graceless, told her how sorry she was. She had been in love with Lord Alejandro all her life and it was a great blow when he married. Further that this happened when her father died and she needed him all the more. Then her uncle had filled her head with ideas about Lady Monserrat not loving Lord Alejandro and what she could do about that.

She continued about the suspicions at the arrival of “Antonio Olivares” and the notion that Lady Monserrat was making a fool of her husband. Lady Monserrat calmly told her that she didn't expect her to understand but she had married without love and had deeply resented the situation. She had been bought and sold. However, her feelings changed and she came to love her husband. Maria tried to tell her that she saw that they were right for each other, that Lord Alejandro had told her multiple times that he saw her as a sister and she had refused to accept it. She had lost the love of her life, her soul had been shattered into a million pieces. She asked that Lady Monserrat allow her to get to know her without rancor getting in the way. She continued, with more of the same crocodile tears she went on about having no one to care for her and implored her to allow her to return to their home and forgive her for all the pain she caused. They they could get to know and forgive each other as Father Anselmo would want them to. She then reached for Lady Monserrat's hand, which she reluctantly extended.

Are you finished? You have nothing else to say?” asked Her Ladyship.

No. That's all.”

Lady Monserrat withdrew her hand and looked down at Maria.

I would truly like to forgive you, Maria, but I cannot. And you know why? Because I don't believe you.”

Excuse me?”

Listen well, Maria. I don't believe you. I don't believe a word of what you just said.”

Wohoo! I was so, SO proud of Monse this episode. Girlfriend was on fire!

Indeed! That's our girl!

I'd say it was like this:

Monserrat: 5
Graceless: 0

Monserrat: 2
Alejandro: 0

Monserrat: 3
Maria: 0

In other conflicts:

Carlota: 2
Graceless: 0

Nadia / Pedro: Draw until Nadia realizes she can use what she now knows.

Is anyone else thinking that Graceless might try to get her claws into Sandro who might try to get his into Josefina while getting Fabiola to chase Tomas to get their fortune, too?

Finally, did Carlota look like she lost some weight? She did look good in this episode.

Great recap, Urban. You got a great episode. Monse usually gets weepy and pouty, but tonight she showed her backbone, and she handle Ale perfectly, even coaxing him into laughter. I really liked seeing them like this. Both Ale and the Padre are idiots when it comes to Maria. Loved Monse pointing out to both the Padre and Ale their double standard with regard to JL and Maria.

Between Sandro and Gracie, who will play whom, I wonder? I wish that whenever Gracie says that SHE is maintaining Carlotta and Monse in HER house, they would point out that THEY sold THEIR hacienda to support HER and Dim. The nerve!

I assume that Fina is following Dim, and both she and we will find out what he's up to.

Urban- You called it correctly about Pedro's disfigured man parts. As some men overcompensate for being minimally endowed, Pedro is doing even more so, because he's got almost nothing down there. Yikes!

Oh my word, Urban, did you call it or WHAT?!?!?!?

Montserrat! YES, yes, and YES!!!

Fatima

Thanks for this stellar recap and how appropriate that you got to recap it since you correctly called Pedro's problem of mutilated parts from the get go. Well done.

Vivi,

"Both Ale and the Padre are idiots when it comes to Maria."

Thanks for not naming me in that deluded group.

and:

"Loved Monse pointing out to both the Padre and Ale their double standard with regard to JL and Maria."

One could add that Montserrat has a very similar blind spot.

Carlos

Superb recap of an exciting episode. Thank you Urban A! Your descriptions were so vivid I felt like I was right there watching. You are a talented writer and I appreciate all the time you put into your recap.

Go Montse! Love that backbone.

I'm liking the possibility of Sandro and Gracie trying to outfox each other. Sounds fun.

So Pedro's tool box is empty, eh? Good call UA. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Too bad he's insane and has decided to take it out on the world. I guess he was wearing a bathing suit in the hot tub.

Que in the heck is going on?!?! My DVR didn't record this tonight, so I checked the cable schedule, and it isn't showing up at all anywhere at any time! Did it air elsewhere? O wonder if it was on here but my system had the wrong info so just didn't record it. It's showing that DQTQTQ is on for two hours every night.

Anyhoodle, thanks for the recap so at least I know what happened! And in the usual fancy fab form.

Thank you for the wonderful recap. I always love your work! The best moment tonight in my opinion was when Dominga spoke up in support of Monse not once but twice! That was fun!

Urban:

Thanks so much for this fantabulous recap! It was stellar.

Ay, yi, yi! about Pedro! I was not expecting that. He is over compensating, I agree! He is just plain evil. I hope Nadia doesn't come to regret her quest for the truth.

Monse, yay! She's got her avocados! I am so happy she stood up to Graceless, stopped the slap in midair and stood up to Ale and BM. I am really liking her backbone.

Padre A really needs to think. I understand he wants everyone to forgive everyone else, but have BM stay with Ale and Monse, heck no! Never! I too agree that BM is lying through her teeth.

I like this future hook up of Sandho and Graceless, it should be fun to see who gets over on whom first.

I am so done with Tomas, what an idiot. I can't stand him, especially since he asked Graceless to name her price!

I am glad Tia stood her ground too, yay! I really want Tia to stick around and keep Dimmy in line and out of Graceless' clutches. I too think that Fina is following Dimmy. I wonder if he really is looking for a job or just faking it. Hmmmm.....

Thanks again Urban for this fantastic recap and your poetic way of writing.

Julia:

Your cable grid must be off here is the lineup for weeknights:

De Que Te Quiero, Te Quiero: 7:00pm

Por Siempre Mi Amor: 8:00pm

Lo Que Vida Mi Robo: 9:00pm

Que Pobres Tan Ricos: 10:00pm

DQTQTQ was slated for two hours, but after I think, an onslaught of mail from viewers about PSMA, Uni decided to leave PSMA in it's time slot.

Urban:

What a marvelous job you did recapping an outstanding episode. And I especially loved the title!

Wow! Hats off to you for predicting Pedro's revelation. I absolutely did not see that coming.

Of course the whole is beautifully written, as usual. Thanks so much!

Wao Monse is growing a backbone.

"So Pedro's tool box is empty, eh?" aah Cap'n Silivia you made my morning.

I just hope Dim is not going to surprise us when Phina caches up with him

Pedro must be taking testosterone injections or he couldn't have a mustache or a receding hairline.

I know I've posted this before, but in Sex Lives of the Great Dictators it is revealed that such deformities are commonplace among them. Overcompensation, indeed! BTW, that author's books are fabulous reads. I have many of them.

As for Tomas, I totally expected him to eventually call Graceless out on her way of doing things. That doesn't mean he will pay. I hope we find this out tonight. Where he was an idiot was in airing the dirty laundry in front of Sandro whom I suppose he thinks is an honest man.

As I typed that it occurred to me to wonder about him, too. He is certainly of an age where most guys are married or seriously involved with a woman. He's a nerd without any dash and yet he is friends with a handsome womanizer like Sandro. I say Tomas needs a makeover, too, if only to get some better clothes. He might have an attitude adjustment as a result.

I wonder what Fina is up to that she went out alone? I hope this is her makeover time. That would be a brilliant slap in Graceless' face.

As soon as I saw "The Lady Vanquishes" I smiled and knew this would be exceptional. And it was.

Urban Anthropologist, this was simply exquisite. It was a veritable feast for the famished. "Lady Monserrat stopped her without dropping her gaze from the pits of her mother's eyes", "Lady Monserrat watched her leave with a silent inner lament that her mother was a woman of such ignoble sentiments" and my favorite "He was tarring the entire family with one rather dirty brush" were amazing.

Monse is my new hero! Angelique Boyer brought it and then some. For a slight moment, I feared she would capitulate and then no! She sliced and diced, cleanly and calmly. Excellent!

Speaking of slicing (oh dear)...so Pedro's truth is finally revealed. If he were not such a heinous monster, I might be sorry for him. But as he is a character and a nasty one, I will not feel any sympathy. "Pedro's tool box is empty" made me laugh out loud Sylvia.

I will openly apologize to Sergio Sendel whose initial portrayal of the character left me cold. He has steathily revealed the core of Pedro and he is amazing here.

Vivi, I am going to love the Sandro/Gracie pairing. Finally, a contest of equals, a match made in hell so to speak. Madelaine, "it should be fun to see who gets over on whom first". Indeed - my money may be on Sandro as I can't think of a character who has gained so much information in so short a time. Maybe he can fleece Tomas in the process?? I can't abide Tomas although I am hoping he can change.

I suspect Fina is going to do something (no idea what) to help Dim procure a job.

Very interesting, pivotal episode. Exceptional reacap.

Am at a seminar tomorrow and Thursday and will look forward to reading your recaps in the evenings NovelaMaven and Julia.

Thanks again UA!

Diana

Thank you Urban. I am especially appreciative of the detail and calm, clear straightforwardness with which you present last night's episode. I missed the first half of the show and will for some time due to a prior standing commitment and look forward to watching on hulu+ what you so aptly described.

I must say: as satisfying as little anvils along the way for the baddies is the refreshing surprise of having a protagonist recognize a smoking heap of bullshit when she encounters it!
Bravo Montse! You go girl! First standing up to your easily duped husband and then letting Maria know you more than had her number! BAM!

I guess Montse was just on a roll having earlier also confronted her "mother" over the convenient death (as far as Montse knows) of her sister, the sister whose hair Gracie tried to pass off as Dimwit's in order to claim half the Almonte fortune. I'm going to enjoy that scene.

Good to see Carlotta in psychological sync with her niece also standing up to Gracie. I must say Lottie looks especially beautiful in the raiment of assertiveness which Fina is also slowly donning: I'm sure she's off to follow her slowly evolving spouse. I just hope he is not going to disappoint those of us whispering fervent prayers to the novela gods for his redemption by being discovered in congress with Virginia!

And Tomas? Uuuuf! He's getting on my third nerve! Chismoso!

Lastly, am I to understand that Nadia is going to let Victor impregnate her in exchange for the promise of never hurting Esme? What about the break up with Victor forever part? Que! Que! What!?

So it is confirmed, El Pricko is not an appropriate moniker for Pedro! No wonder he's such a nasty heartless piece of work. This says a lot for taking a test drive before you buy the hot rod. . .in this case NOT rod!

Ah, Pedro would have been the perfect man for Gracie: she would have readily given him one or more children in exchange for the prestige and luxury Pedro thinks he's offering. . .but she probably would've killed him. Too bad the unfolding of the space-time continuum didn't allow this union!

Once again, thank you Urban Anthropologist, I look forward to comments and your ongoing insightful commentary on our beloved though dysfunctional little community.

Lila

Cap'n Sylvia, I must commend your humor. I can only imagine the horror public restrooms must be for this guy. Considering how tightly wound Pedro was from Day One, I wonder whether the writers told Sergio Sendel that this was Pedro's problem.

Of course this secret will come out eventually. Let's start speculating on how that will happen.

I would advise Nadia to write a document on this, have it notarized, and put copies in the hands of an attorney (Alejandro's, perhaps) and in a safe deposit box. That way she can demand a divorce and let Pedro know that if anything happens to her this information will be revealed. After the divorce she can marry Victor and they can go to the US or Europe and live happily ever after.

Stellar UA! Boy we are getting some plot progression last few days.

Monse knocked it out of the park last night. I like your scorecard, but I might have even given her more points with Ale. I was a tad worried there for a minute with Maria thinking, oh cripes, she can't possibly fall for this too! But no sirreee--she saw right through all the bluster. I loved the little pleased smirk as she left.

What's there to say about Pedro. Correct, it won't help Nadia any at this point. And now it makes him frankly even more dangerous since she knows his secret. I was a tad surprised he told her after all this time.

I'm wondering what Fina is up to. I hope she doesn't do something behind Dim's back to get him work and then he'll find out later, etc. They are making progress, hate to see it implode. But then again, we have, lord help us 190 episodes. I guess there will be bumps along the way.

Graceless has got to sink her claws into someone. I would love her to smooze up to Sandro thinking he has bucks, etc and have that all implode in her face. And will his co-hort in crime truly turn out to be her daughter? Somehow I still think there's a twist there somewhere.

Dailsynjay

Dear Urban Anthropologist,

Thanks so much for a GRIPPING recap of another great episode. I enjoyed every word!

Normally, I read it on my subway ride, and I was so bummed when I realized the battery on my phone was dead. But I sat down first thing at my desk at work and was so excited to see what you'd write. Thanks so much for all the detail and great lines.

I don't think Fabiola is Graceless' daughter. Graceless is at least intelligent enough to avoid substance abuse and other behaviors that put her out of control. This would also be a disaster considering that now Tomas has given Sandro weapons to use against Alejandro.

Of course Maria could still turn out to be Alejandro's sister even if Fabiola is. Gaspar's wife or some other unfortunate female peon who gave birth in the convent could also have been victimized by Benjamin. Padre Anselmo could have been in the next room for either of these births.

However, my money is still on Maria being Graceless' daughter. That would be such a disaster in her eyes.

thanks, Urban, for another excellent and elegant recap of an information filled episode.

Yikes..Pedro's problemo. I have never seen this particular problem in a telenovela. It makes me uncomfy just thinking about it. It put me on mind of the eunuchs who were assigned to the harems and the powerful eunuch in Game of thrones. Again...yikes. Urban, it is amazing that you guessed what Pedro's was. I never heard of that book , but the point must be that dictators are often overcompensating for their deficiencies.

I was surfing between this show and the Voice. I thought that Gracie looked very old when she was crying and emoting. DC played a nasty . Blind girl in Pasion! which I have been watching.

Like it or not, except for a lack of sincerity of intent, virtually everything that María said was the truth.

As for Pedro, I do feel very sorry for him... ouch! However, I find it interesting that there was outrage (and rightly so) here that the writers might be linking his moral deviance to homosexuality, but to link it to a horribly terrifying physical (not to mention emotional) mutilation is somehow understandable. How about that he was a bad man to begin with and that he is using his injury and impairment to justify his ruthlessness? I know, I'm sounding like a scold... maybe he got what he deserves... in advance.

By the way, when Nadia asked him if he arranged the surgeon's death, he replied, "No estoy diciendo eso." ("I'm not saying that.") even while nodding his head affirmatively. I do think we can add another murder to our growing list.

Carlos

Urban, thanks for your wonderful recap.

I loved:

Montse winning on the home front with Alejandro.

Stopping Graciela's hand before it could slap her.

Montse hearing Maria out and then telling her that she did not believe her.

Finally finding out why Pedro is the twisted piece of work he is.

I hope Josefina isn't going out to follow Dimitrio.

Great episode.

Jarifa

If Graciela is Livia, then Pedro is surely Caligula.

Urban, I've read this again this morning. Super. Absolutely super!

Fatima

Wondering if Pedro's somewhat admittance to the revenge he played on the surgeon might foreshadow his own doom. He said he would have rather died than lice the way he's living. Well, then. The little anvil angels might just make that happen, you think? We can only hope.

Anyone want to bust out in a chorus of "How to you solve a problem like Maria?"
I was thinking on the way to work ( I left my Kindle at home, had to do something on the bus), now that Ale finally realizes he doesn't stand a chance over-ruling his sweet wife, where will poor little Maria go? Pedro is not going to be a happy camper with this development. He's just having a really bad day isn't he?

Daisynjay

Carlos, we don't know yet whether Pedro was evil before his accident. It would make perfect sense, though, because evil on his level usually doesn't begin that suddenly. What we can be certain of is that he never saw a shrink 20 years ago.

As to Maria, she lies like a rug. She would start trouble. Big trouble. As to what should happen:

Alejandro and Monserrat should file attempted kidnapping charges and Carlota should file assault charges against her. She needs to be locked up.

Daisynjay, your question deserves a new post.

While many statements of this type are foreshadowing, I think Pedro's wish should not be granted, at least not right away. What he deserves for what he has done to Esmeralda, Nadia, Victor, and what he is trying to do to Alejandro is much worse.

Think about what would happen to him in prison.

"NOT rod"...snort! Good one Lila.

Gosh, it hadn't occurred to me that Dim might be meeting Virginia. Ugh. I was thinking more along the lines of maybe he was working a crap job and was too embarrassed to tell Fina. (Anybody remember the movie Overboard, where Goldie Hawn thought Kurt Russell was having an affair and instead he was secretly working a night job hauling manure?) I fear my desire to see Dim evolve to a Good Guy has turned me into a cock-eyed optimist.

Urban, that is an excellent idea for Nadia. Don't you wish our characters would listen to us?

I just checked my old library's website and they have the book UA recommended, but only in Spanish, LOL!! Maybe when I get back there in June it will be my Spanish homework.

So...let me get this straight....my Spanish is a little rusty and I'm still learning, but I LOVE this site, you all don't know how much this is helping me with my Spanish :D Thank you.
Anyway as I was asking: Pedro had an accident and he lost his avocados only or the whole enchilada? And is Fabiola Graceless' daughter? Did Benjamin know that was his child? If so why did he give up his own daughter to his sister, because he didn't want a daughter, he wanted a son? Thanks in advance :D
Veronica

UA thanks so much for this great recap. Loved the title and your score card. Also agree with Pedro having to go to jail as his anvil. The humiliation there might drive him to suicide.

Yes Monse was on fire this episode and it was refreshing to have a good person having a backbone and not being duped.

Add me to the list of those who didn't see disfigurement as the why for Pedro's crazy (though he was most likely evil before the accident). Great call UA.

Now we know why EZ came up gasping for air in that jacuzzi.

He kept looking for something that just wasn't there!

Sylvia: "(Anybody remember the movie Overboard, where Goldie Hawn thought Kurt Russell was having an affair and instead he was secretly working a night job hauling manure?)" - yes, yes!

One of my fav movies - never get tired of watching it - still great after all these years.

You may be onto something. Dim did look a shade guilty - I think he's washed Ginny out of his hair though.

Diana

Oh, man, we have great one-liners this morning! Lila, Oxnard Huero, and Cap'n Sylvia all at once!

Bienvenidos, Veronica!

I am not convinced that Benjamin knew he was handing over his own child, nor am I necessarily convinced that she was his own child. If you look back over the discussions of the last few days you'll see what I mean. If you saw any of the flashbacks of him, you'll know why he never was a father in the proper sense of that word.

Thanks for the shout out Cap'n! Pedro's problem just begs for snarky comments, like this:

Pedro had an accident and he lost his avocados only or the whole enchilada? And Good one Veronica and welcome!

I hope someone also answers as to whether Nadia accepted Pedro's deal: pregnancy by Vic for his keeping his claws off Esme?

Can't wait to see this episode!

Lila

I think Nadia took that devil's bargain but if she's smart she never will have to pay it off.

My advice about the document includes talking to Padre Anselmo in the confessional. He can't tell anyone and he can be the keeper of one copy of that document. Or the key to the safe deposit box.

As to what Pedro lost, I think it was everything. From the look on Nadia's face he must have ended up like one of the Skoptsy. Click on the link for the external photo.

No avocados, no enchilada. Nada. Not even an attempt at a reconstruction which -- if he came from a rich family -- would have been the norm even if that meant having it done in a foreign country. Unless he didn't or is estranged from them, which we also still don't know.

I had a friend in high school who almost lost his nose in a motorcycle accident, but Pedro.... You can see where this could make a guy into a monster.

UA, awesome awesome funny lunch reading, thanks!!
ITA with everyone, Montse showed her backbone and her claws last night for sure!!
Sylvia, add me to the ones ROFLOL on "So Pedro's tool box is empty, eh?"

Diana,
'Catalina!!! / Arturo!!!'
'what could I ever give you that you don't already have? / a little girl...'
Overboard is one of my favs too!!

Veronica, it has been my belief all along based on what we've been shown of Benjamin that he never wanted any responsibilities with regard to marriage and parenthood. It wasn't about money so much as about how it would cramp his style.

Graceless would have run through his money had she had any legal access to it. They were two of a kind except in one thing: She wanted the social respectability of being married to Someone Important To The Community. She needed this for her own ego as much as she wanted the money that was also part of that deal. Carlota looked after Monserrat or she would have become just like Graceless. Dimitrio would have become worse than he is.

I also think that Graceless might have been bored living in a hacienda or the Mendozas would have spent some time on the one Lauro owned.

And Vivi, you're dead right on the issue of Monserrat and Carlota selling the hacienda. Someone needs to start reminding Graceless about that.

UA - Terrific recap. In addition to the title and lines already mentioned, this subtle one grabbed me: "Father Anselmo sat at the bedside, listening to Maria's planned speech..."

Pedro didn’t mention his enchilada, only his testicles, so I got the impression the enchilada is intact. If he'd lost the whole toolbox [thanks, Cap'n Sylvia!], I think he would've murdered more people by now. Hard to believe he was able for two whole years to make Nadia think he was her Principe Azul, before they married.

I'm just hoping Nadia doesn't tell Esme. Love Esme, but she blabs to the wrong person and I can't take her getting beat up again.

So I guess Sandro is really a lawyer since that’s how Tomás introduced him. Tomás needs work but I have no problems with him insulting Graciela. How ironic that he has no clue about his old friend Sandro.

I know Nadia doesn't even want to go there, but if she's going to stay married to Pedro she needs to check out the possibilities. No idea, but maybe a sex surrogate, hormone replacement, or avocado transplant can help Pedro. Not help him become a good person, but at least level enough not to bite her head off when they're in private.

Welcome Veronica! Your first time and you're already cracking wise. Good theme with the guacamole and enchiladas, hee!

Martaivett and Diana, Looks like we'll have to have a special showing of Overboard out on the patio when the weather gets nice. Such a fun movie.

Have a good point there UA. With his admittance and how he is currently manipulating things, Pedro will be a candidate for one very LARGE anvil when the time comes.

If Nadia had any sympathy for the guy, Pedro basically squashed it with the hair-pulling threat as he left. If he had half a pea-brain, he could have played it for all it was worth and possibly got her to feel bad for him. He should take some lessons from Maria--she's not bad on pulling the "woe is me" except when she tries it on Monse.

Nadia, Esme and Refugio are sometimes short fuses who talk and think later. maybe we can muzzle all three for a few dozen episodes. I'm with the patio--enough beatings for awhile.

Daisynjay

I have no sympathy for Pedro. If he really truly wished he hadn't survived that accident, he would have offed himself, not the doctor who saved him. He's a mean and vindictive guy, and while his loss may have intensified his ambitions, I think he was always mean. If he were intact, he would probably be raping women as well as beating them.

Curious what Dim is up to, but I'm also curious why Graceless thinks he is the only one who can work. She is such a narrowminded relic. Why can't Josefina and Carlota look for something that pays? And every one of them should insist that Graceless do something to support herself. She's been spending other people's money too long already. At the very least, she should be forced to cut down on her staff and luxuries.

Julia,

"I think he was always mean. If he were intact, he would probably be raping women as well as beating them."

Thank you.

Carlos

Another beautiful, detailed recap UA. I was struck by the phrase"

"He was tarring the entire family with one rather dirty brush." I see my amiga Diana noted that one also.

Here's my shame-faced admission. I AM SO GULLIBLE I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE BELIEVED MARIA. I mean she was telling a very good tale. So I was thrilled Montse didn't buy it, and darn happy that I wasn't put to the test. I even found Graciela's tears very convincing last night.

Agree that if Pedro had just played it right, he could have gotten all kinds of sympathy and cooperation from Nadia. Poor dear is as much of a dim-witted softie as I am. Lord protect us all1

Welcome Veronica. Glad the folks could clear things up for you.

Oh yes, and lovely photo and exquisite title.

You're welcome, all.

I for one am looking forward to watching Sandro and Graceless try to scam each other. He may have a law degree but I'll bet he's not a millionaire.

I know I've said this already, but Alejandro needs to insist on a DNA test and make it happen under the conditions I described yesterday. It needs to be bulletproof.

Can't wait to see Maria's reaction to Monse's stonewall. Will Maria stay in fake mode and continue to cry and plead, or will the real Maria erupt?

Urban A, thanks for the recap. As always it was awesomely descriptive and a great read.

Loved Montse in last nights epi. She never let her guard down. Not even with her mother. Finally! Graceless was stopped from putting her hands on Montse. Maybe now she will think twice the next time she wants to lay a hand on Montse. And putting her foot down about BM. The greatest part of that was Dominga being on her side, and telling Montse to keep it up and not give in. AWESOME! And lastly BM. For a moment, while Montse was listening to BM lie through her teeth, I thought she might actually believe her. What a huge sigh of relief when Montse told her otherwise. Montse was on fire! NEXT!!!

I am with everyone that thinks Fina is going to follow Dimi. I don't know what he's up to, and I'm not sure if I want to know. He had taken a few steps forward on his way to redemption, I would hate to see him go back.

Looking forward to the "hook up" between Gracie and Sandro. I haven't seen these two together since "Canaveral de Pasiones" Anyone remember that TN?

Back to work...hasta pronto!

Alas, no. I have only seen the latest version, Abismo de Pasion which could have been written a lot better.

Aunty Ann, I would love to see that novela. It has long been Jarocha's favorite and she is a very thoughtful viewer of telenovelas.

Maybe Dim is dancing for the SAHM/ladies who lunch crowd during school hours at La Escondida.

...or EZ. You know. Anyone who's into that.

Ha, I had to look up SAHM. Good one. Funnily enough, the actor who plays EZ really did produce a Sólo para Mujeres show where he and other actors went on tour with a Chippendales type review. Apparently it was (and maybe still is?) wildly popular.

Thinking back to one of your earlier comments Urban as soon as Fina went out the door I did think she might be off to the beauty parlor for an overhaul but then I changed my mind in favor of her following Dimmie. I'll take either, I just hope he isn't with VirgiNOT.

Lila

Urban & Cap'n Sylvia,

If you do ever have the opportunity, whether on DVD or perhaps Hulu, do watch Canaveral de Pasiones. I loved it when it came out.

But be prepared to watch our loving Graceless play the protagonist. Don't worry, she does a great job. Honestly, Robo is the first TN I have watched with Castro as the evil, vindictive mother.

Por lo menos, sabemos que EZ no estaba atragantando in that jacuzzi.

Da me disculpas

Oh Oxnard, you almost made me blush! You definitely made me laugh.

:D thank you everyone for having me here :D and thanks for answering my questions! I really appreciate your help :)
so....the whole enchilada, ey? damn i wouldn't want to be in this guy shoes :( but I thought that he and Nadia consummated the marriage on their honeymoon?
and I think that Fabiola is Gracie's daughter, both are mean and both want money, it seems the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
And as for Montserrat, I LOVED her last night, she was knocking them dead.
as for Alejandro, *sigh* I wonder if while he was in that jail cell after his duel with Jose Luis, he inhaled some dust and it screwed with what little brain he has, this woman your friend KIDNAPPED your son and now because of what happened you want to put her into the same house as your SON? He has lost it, folks.
And Maria, I wonder if her deal with the devil, uh I mean Pedro will last. Because I think she failed in getting in that house to get to Alejandro.
And since UA called what happened to Pedro, I have a prediction too. This isn't a spoiler just my guess. Since seeing Maria do what she did to Adolfito in the hospital room remember: they were getting busy and el Padre caught them and then Maria cried rape. Very traitorous behavior, I wonder if Pedro will be betrayed by her? Or will he see she is more trouble than she worth and take care of her instead?
Veronica

Verónica,I wonder if Pedro will be betrayed by her?
"I wonder if Pedro will be betrayed by her? (Maria)"

I'm counting on it.

Carlos

Veronica (my mom's name)- No. Nat and Pedro never consummated their marriage. Victor (my dad's name) was her first and only.

And, WELCOME!

Thanks everyone for having me :D

Veronica, the more the merrier! You might have heard us mention that we like to hang out on The Patio. In case you don't already know, it is our virtual hangout, The Patio of Lowered Expectations.
