Qué Pobres, Lunes 3/17/14 (#50): Shamrocks as Far as the Eye Can See

Green things in this episode: Envy; a greengrocer; nausea; limes
Green things NOT in this episode: Money; luck of the Irish; any luck at all

MA continues working on the masonry. He's so proud of his work, he thinks when this is done he can maybe help the Menchacas with repairs around the house!

Isela says some nonsense about doing sudoku puzzles to keep the Germans away... oh what's that guy's name... no, not Hitler... oh, right, Alzheimer's! OMG I wish Mini would hit her in the head.

In the kitchen, Carmelita lectures Lupe about her fear of love... that's why Lupe's with Nepo; that's not scary at all, because she's not in love with him.

Next: A serenade from Nepo. In bright sunlight, on the street, presumably with a hangover. Wow - if that Plantain King gig doesn't work out for him, maybe he could do this full-time. Nepo ends his serenade with a marriage proposal for Lupita. There are only three onlookers who don't look thrilled: MA (from the balcony), Emiliano, and Lupita. Lupita tells Nepo they should discuss this in private.

MA is suddenly in a foul mood, but denies to his sister and grandmother that his change of demeanor has anything to do with Lupita.

Lupe tells Nepo there's no need for him to apologize. She's the one who's sorry. She's been unfair to him. She's kept asking him for more time, but the truth is, he deserves better. He doesn't take it well. He asks if there's another man. Lupe says no - it's all her. But he's still convinced that she's the woman for him.

AS, Leo, and Toto too DaVinci have slowly made their way back to La Nopalera. It was a long, hard trek, right up there with the Oregon Trail, the Yellow-Brick Road, and Snoopy Come Home, but here they are. Chuy welcomes them with gentle sarcasm, asking if they'd like something to eat or drink, or if they'd like him to fire up the boiler. He and Carmelita are here to serve! Carmelita fumes. Frida and MA see them and ask, sarcastically, how were the convent and monastery. AS says she just had to come back because she missed her children so much.

Ahole gives Vilma Tato's phone number and tells her to find out everything about him.

Even in the privacy of the attic, after MA confronts AS and Leo about the Three Seasons hotel, AS tries to play dumb. Leo says sure, Maca put them up at the hotel briefly. She paid for everything.

Downstairs, the Menchacas aren't so thrilled to have AS and Leo back. Lupita breaks the news that she and the Banana Man split.

MA shows Leo the drawings that were substituted for the valuable real eastate documentos. Leo didn't switch them and has no idea what documents MA's talking about. In fact, now Leo's wondering if he needs to start locking up his precious drawings in a safe.

MA returns to his masonry work with renewed vigor. Chuy tries to get him to knock off for the night - it's dark now - but MA doesn't want to stop until the job is finished. I think Chuy ends up helping him.

Nepo is at home. He's falling-down drunk and singing loudly. Worried, Diego checks in on him. Nepo tells him that Lupe dumped him and it's his own stupid fault. Diego offers to ditch practice tomorrow so he can hang out and drink with him and keep him company. "No, you're an athlete!" Nepo insists. "You have to keep yourself pure!" Wow, that's every boy's dream. Diego looks more depressed than his father.

Nepo looks ready to proceed to the next stage of intoxication, the messy stage, so Diego leaves him to his lurching/singing/drinking/passing out and for all Diego knows Nepo will choke to death overnight, but at least it'll be a super-macho way to die.

Thanks to the rooftop construction still in progress, the remaining Menchacas will be sleeping downstairs tonight. Perla wants to know if Leo and AS saw any celebrities at the Three Seasons. (Actually, I'm a bit confused as to whether they're still entertaining their monastery/convent story at all, or how it's supposed to overlap with their Countess story.) AS talks about the Countess, who is surely at home in her nice palace by now. Lupita brings some blankets and says the party's over; time for bed. The kids all glare at one another.

Emiliano has questions about the Lupe/Nepo relationship. Lupe says it's better to tell the truth, even when it's difficult. Eventually, she and Nepo will be friends again, just as they were before.

It's the next day and MA is at the market, lugging a big bag of limes, after spending all night on the roof with his real-life Legos. He calls for Trofeo in alarm, then falls down unconscious.

Hopefully he'll wake up with amnesia. I just hope the limes weren't damaged.

Next time: Fireworks? Kissing??

Julie thanks so much for your recap an dthe green theme. Your comments about AS, Leo and Toto/Da Vinci were great as was your commentary on the Diego/Nepo conversation - "You have to keep yourself pure!" Wow, that's every boy's dream. Diego looks more depressed than his father." And "for all Diego knows Nepo will choke to death overnight, but at least it'll be a super-macho way to die."

Though Nepo is usually a nice guy, he doesn't seem to understand the word no at all. As we have joking for a while now, its very clear why his first wife left (I hope she does show up). Lupe's only recourse is to fall in love w/someone else (yeah, I know) but then Nepo will get mad. Thankfully this is a comedy or Nepo would become completely unhinged but as it stands now his refusal to listen to Lupe is creepy, scary, frightening and very off-putting.

At first I didn't think Nepo was even going to understand that Lupe was breaking up with him. I'll give him credit for understanding that much, even if he thinks it's only temporary.

Julie:

Thanks so much for this St. Paddy's Day themed recap, it was hilarious.

I had to laugh at AS and Leo and their little adventure. Too funny. I also thought the Don Chuy and Carmelita greeting them back was funny. If looks could kill Carmelita would have zapped them with her eyes!

I also liked how MA continued on with the Penthouse and when he informed AS and Leo that when it was done they would all be sharing this space. AS and Leo about had an infarto!

I am glad Lupe finally told Nepo that it wasn't going to happen. He is not taking no for an answer though. He really ought to think about Guendy. They are so cute together.

Speaking of Guendy, I had to laugh at her with her blanket all the way up to her eyes basically as Carm thought she had been off with My Name is Mike, lol. I think Guendy is a bit riddled with guilt.

Thanks again Julie for the marvelous recap : )

Julie, thanks for your great recap. Loved your description of the Ruiz-Palacios trip back to La Nopalera: "right up there with the Oregon Trail, the Yellow-Brick-Road, Snoopy Come Home." also "she and the banana man split." Very funny!

I didn't know if Lupe had it in her to finally cut it off with Nepo and was so happy that she did for both of them. Of course, all Jose Tizoc could think of was what was going to happen to Nepo's support of his band. So typical of teenage thought. The Nepo character as bull-headed as he is written had a hard time getting his mind around the rejection. His drunken binge in his bedroom was very funny. Poor Diego.

I loved AS and Leo as "fugitives" knowing that their limited "options A,B, and C" were all leading them to the Menchacas in La Nopalera. What an adventure they had!

Doña Mati made a couple of good comments. First, she told MA he had the smile of a man in love which of course he quickly tried to redirect to his love of his bricklaying work. Second, was her comment that AS snored like a polar bear after AS complained about doña Mati snoring.

My favorite scene was don Chuy trying to talk to MA over the brick wall.

Thanks for this very funny recap, Julie. Well done.

"...at least it'll be a super-macho way to die."

Heh heh.

Although now I'm a little worried about Nepo's drinking like this two nights in a row. He wowed me with his singing. And how sweet was it of Diego to offer to join his dad in his suffering?

My favorite scenes last night were those tracking the great escape. I thought that Da Vinci looked especially cute in his little hoodie. Perfect for concealing his identity as they fled.

Marta, thanks for your Friday recap. Unfortunately I got distracted by the basketball stuff and didn't even get around to watching the episode until late yesterday afternoon. Sorry that I missed the great discussion. I'm so sorry that Maca left, I hope that she returns soon.

Güendy must have some really heavy duty indestructible makeup for it to have survived the preceding night and still look pretty much intact the next day.

Julie,

"I just hope the limes weren't damaged."

Now that's cold.

Carlos

Madelaine - I forgot, AS wasn't even there, was she, when Tomas and Saul worked out the deal where all of the RPs except Mati would have to live on the roof until the house was all paid for?? No wonder she was so upset. (Aside from the fact that she's always upset.)

I didn't do the Guendy/Carmelita scene because I thought it was a rerun from Friday - now I'm not so sure. I had trouble understanding what they were saying anyway, just as I had trouble understanding most of the Lupe/Carmelita scene in the kitchen. My Spanish was broken last night!

So Carmelita assumed Guendy was with My Name Mike? And then she had that conversation with Lupe about kissing MA? That's confusing. It's confusing enough that Nepo proposed to Lupe right after sleeping naked with Guendy.

In the scene with Chuy talking to MA on the other side of the brick wall, I had a weird flashback to "The Cask of Amontillado." Except it was bricklayer who was entombing himself!

I felt badly for Diego, who is so eager to bond with his father over anything other than soccer and it never works out.

Carlos: I love limes! Limes would never try to cheat the Menchacas out of a million dollars!

Julie, I won't repeat everyone else's favorites, mine are exactly those same ones.
the top one is the green theme and the reference to the Oregon Trail, the Yellow-Brick Road, and Snoopy Come Home... I could not stop laughing that they both were like holding their breath before walking in to the bus station, train station and then jumping/running out trying to catch their breath...
have to say great acting on both.
MA and Chuy talking over the wall (yes, Chuy asked him to stop for the day and since MA refused, he then offered to help and MA accepted).
The sleeping arrangement was that Leo and MA would sleep in the couches and the ladies of RP family would all sleep together in former Don Chuy's room. (Mati, Frida, AS)
I can totally understand MA's fainting after a whole day working on the wall and little if any sleep then going to do more hard work at the platanera. For someone not used to hard physical work, that is the common result. and yes, Julie, the worrying about the limes was a bit cold. but funny!

Chuy did not want anyone to sleep in the roof room because the concrete/stuff was not dry yet.

Julie, ITA on...
I felt badly for Diego, who is so eager to bond with his father over anything other than soccer and it never works out.

i was also feeling bad for Nepo listening to and singing to that popular 'i am so blue' song 'que voy a hacer'.

here are the lyrics in spanish. i can translate in a little while...
Espinoza Paz sings 'que voy a hacer', probably one of his biggest hits...

Solame quiero recuperarte, vuelve otravez!

Carlos, I had forgotten how cute Da Vinci was in his hoodie!

Marta, thank you for the lyrics to the song.

Madelaine, Guendy was hiding under the covers like a "guilty" little kid.

Jarifa

Thanks for the song lyrics, Marta. Nepo really was in full-on wallowing mode, wasn't he? I guess it's the same as when women do their post-breakup rituals, except with a different song, and tequila instead of ice cream.

(Some ice cream flavors aren't too bad with certain kinds of tequila. I'm just putting that out there...)

Here is the translation, i reorganized the lines to flow better...

Lo intentamos pero no pudo funcionar (we tried but it didn’t work out)
yo hize las cosas mal, yo si me enamore (I did it all wrong, I DID fall in love, though)
me dijiste que no sentias nada por mi (you told me you did not feel anything for me)
que si contigo dormi, que lo olvides mejor (that if I slept with you, to forget it)
que no te busque, que no te llame (not to look for you, not to call you)
que otra persona tiene la llave (that someone else has the key)
para entrar en tu vida. (to go into your life, to be in your life)

Que voy a hacer??...
cuando tenga ganas de darte un beso, que voy a hacer (what will I do?? When I feel like giving you a kiss… what will I do??)
sera muy tonto hacerle caricias a la pared (it would be too silly to caress the wall)
saldre a buscarte con la intención de volverte a ver.(I will go look for you with the intention to see you again)

Me morire...
cuando te mire besando a otro me morire,(I will die when I see you kissing another I will die…)
hace un par de dias que te marchaste hoy mirame. ( its been just a couple days since you left …. And now look at me…)
Solame quiero recuperarte, vuelve otra vez! (I only want to get you back, come back to me again!)

Thanks, Julie! I thought it was all very funny! The banana man's split and "right up there with the Oregon Trail, the Yellow-Brick-Road, Snoopy Come Home" were my favorite jokes.

I think I've identified the source of Nepo's lack of luck. The horseshoes in his bedroom are all hanging upside down. Another thing I thought was funny was that manly men types in telenovelas almost always have horse decor in their homes or offices, but Nepo's horse stuff on the walls was all sort of dinky and cartoonish. Good one, set decorator! I, too, think it's creepy how he won't take no for an answer. I'm hoping after his wallowing Bananaman will finally get it. I did enjoy the music, though. I don't want to marry Nepo, either, but he can bring mariachis by my house any time!

Loved when Chuy sent Carmelita to get water for the new arrivals, and she brought a glass for Leo and a bowl for Da Vinci, and nothing for AS.

I wonder how long it will take AS to turn to Ahole for money.

I hope My Name Mike's fainting spell won't discourage him from working at the fruit stand. I want him to stick with it just for more chances to say "banana boxes"! The way he pronounces that cracks me up.

I also learned that horseshoes are supposed to point up, but I've heard others insist that they're supposed to point down.

Nobody ever suggests turning them sideways. It might be worth a shot. Actually, Nepo strikes me as the type of guy who makes his own luck, but he must have blown all of that luck on the business, with none left over for his love life.

However, it is HILARIOUS about the cartoon horsey decor. I did not notice that, so thank you, Julia. If that's how he sees horses, it explains that dinky cartooney toy horse he gave Emiliano a few weeks ago.

As far as AS making a deal with Ahole - I predict that it will happen within minutes of finding out that the Countess will never be her personal ATM.

I am also looking forward to Vilma's investigation of Tato. That ought to be very vexing for everyone involved.

Here's a thought about Nepo. I hope it will be coherent.

When we are kids, we are told that we will be able to "do anything" when we grow up. That we should reach for the stars and all that.

When we're older, motivational speakers tell us not to set any limits for ourselves. Whatever we want, we can have. Never mind what the haters and the negative Nellies say. You can do it! Keep at it, and eventually you will succeed!

Nepo probably benefited from that kind of talk when he was starting his business. Nobody can succeed at much if they don't ignore the doubters, believe in themselves, and keep trying.

This is why he won't give up on Lupita. He thinks that the goal of winning her love is equivalent to the goal of being successful in business. It is not.

People are not goals. They are not prizes. The motivational speakers hardly ever mention this. It is a hard lesson to learn, but by golly Nepo had better learn it before his liver explodes!

i googled 'horseshoes on wall photos' and got an even number of 'legs up' and 'legs down' photos so that didn't help...
tried 'horseshoes on wall for luck' and got more with legs up than legs down...
yahoo answers on 'right way to hang a horse shoe for luck'
has it that at first people hung it with the inverted u (legs down) but more recently people hang it with the legs up 'to not let the luck run out at the bottom'... go figure!

That seems like a likely factor. Not accepting defeat is always lauded as an admirable trait, and few motivators bother to add caveats about not trying to infringe on others' rights and liberties to achieve success.

Plus, movies and telenovelas often show persistence as romantic and something that will work in the end, instead of creepy and wrong which is only the case if you're a "bad guy".

Julie, totally agree with your 'thought about Nepo'.

There is definitely some confusion/disagreement as to where to draw the line between "romantic persistence" and stalking/harassment, especially when playing hard to get is still a popular tactic.

But if someone avoids kissing you, doesn't want to reveal the relationship to others, cancels most of your dinner dates, tries not to have much time to talk to you, and says no to everything, it's safe to assume that she has crossed the line from "hard to get" and is approaching "restraining order" territory.

julie,
will have to steal this for use later...
if someone avoids kissing you, doesn't want to reveal the relationship to others, cancels most of your dinner dates, tries not to have much time to talk to you, and says no to everything, it's safe to assume that she has crossed the line from "hard to get" and is approaching "restraining order" territory.
brilliant way to summ it up!

Here is some "artwork" I did for MEPS that describes a similar situation. It's the answer to the #2 "question" which, sadly, someone once used as an excuse for being "persistent" with me.

Hahahahaha!

Yeah, I had a stalker once. It is not romantic or flattering. It's scary. But in his mind, everything he did was sweet and showed his dedication, because obviously we were meant to be!

Hey, MA gets to sleep in the house tonight on the sofa (that he will probably fall off of) AND he gets a blanket! Life is looking up for him already!

I hope the hotel mentions AS's scam to the tabloids or something. Won't she be embarrassed?

Any guesses on whether Guendy will be miraculously pregnant after The Thing That Did Not Happen?

I predict no pregnancy, due to alcohol-related malfunction.

And MA will probably try to sleep on the roof even though it's not habitable. Unless he's in the hospital with amnesia from bumping his head after the lime attack.

If he does get amnesia (he should be so lucky), maybe he'll forget that he can't handle the sofa.

Woops, skipped a thought. By "alcohol-related malfunction" I meant "equipment malfunction," i.e. I don't think they were able to do it.

I hope you're right. I want them to get together, but I don't want either of them to feel forced.

Kind of disappointed in some of the Menchacas for the way they wanted to exploit Lupita's relationship with Nepo (ahem TIZOC). I think Tizoc and Perla need more responsibilities. Perla doesn't seem to spend much time or effort at the salon, and does Tizoc have a job or does he just work out and work on his music? And then Frida needs to get it together and do something as well. Go to school, but also a part-time job if she can find one. It was mentioned that she is in fact 18, so she isn't underage.

JT has a part-time job cutting diamonds with his abs!

Hmm... he really doesn't seem to do anything. And we've heard the band, so we KNOW they're not a significant source of income.

I don't know why he and Perla can't work at the restaurant, or learn a trade. JT could work at the market for Nepo. Perla is supposed to be learning about the salon business, but she couldn't care less. Maybe she's underage. Otherwise she should just go to a small but reputable modeling agency just on the off chance that they don't laugh her out of there.

Chuy has taken odd plumbing jobs, so you'd think he could teach JT and why not Perla too, because it would probably be good for business if JT and Perla did plumbing calls together!

And don't even get me started on that little slacker Emiliano. He's old enough to be doing peanut butter commercials by now.

Tizoc and Perla as a plumbing team! I love it! Frida could work at the salon. She could probably make a success of that with some training. Mati could even go with her and hang out there so they wouldn't have to worry about leaving her alone. I bet Mati would love to chat with people at the salon!

Mati would be a big hit at the salon. They'd have to get her some daywear, though.

Another funny moment: Leo saying he felt like Victoria Ruffo, la llorona. He suffers so much! Maybe at least Diego will perk up a little now that he's back.

I'm more than ready for Diego's storyline to kick into high gear. Whatever's going on with him, it's hard to see him so lonely and unhappy, especially when the people around him don't even seem to notice.

I'm surprised Diego hasn't deliberately injured himself yet to get out of playing futbol.
