De Que Te Quiero, Te Quiero #21- Mon 4/7
Diego gets a call from Alberto--he's got good news.
Irene shops for art supplies.
Eleazar hands the luggage tags and info over to Alberto. Diego shows up and Alberto tells them that with this evidence, they can at least get Carmen out on bail. Eleazar ribs Diego about being in luuuuurve with Natalia and Diego ribs Eleazar about being in luuuuuuurve with Carmen.
Oh, great. Andres is back from sailing around the world. Remember Andres? The guy who put Rodrigo in a coma. Remember Rodrigo? The guy who's supposed to be Diego's twin, only we haven't seen him since Week 1?
Irene and Diego get to eat in peace, since Vicente and Diana are both being grumpy. When Irene mentions Vicente threatening to "turn in" Diana, Diego goes upstairs to confront her. He tells her that he saw the security videos, but she asks if he saw her face. She turns on the waterworks about how humiliating it is for him to think so badly of her. He tells her he remembers smelling her perfume and he's sure it was her who planted the drugs in Natalia's desk. She counters that he's BEEN cheating on her since he met Natalia, or he would have told her who she was.
Andres asks Luz if she knows where to find the Garcias. Yeah, I'm sure Natalia will be thrilled to see him.
Diana presses Diego for info, so he says he hadn't seen Natalia until recently. And no, she's not the reason he wants a divorce, so her being here doesn't change anything. Diego doesn't believe Diana's protestations of innocence and says it's over. OVER. Well, sweetie…you tried, you cried, you bought crappy cocaine and planted it in Natalia's desk and everything. Time to pack it in.
Andres goes over to Garcia Central Station, where Brigitte is hanging out alone. She wants to know all about his travels, but he never actually crossed the ocean, so, whatevs.
Vicente came downstairs for dinner after all. Diego insists that he go get all the testing done that the doctor recommended. Vicente insists that if the fights in the house were over, that would be enough to make him feel better. Diego apologizes for accusing Vicente of planting the drugs. Vicente plays up Diana's innocence, telling Diego to drop the idea that it was her.
Brigitte asks if it's true that sailors have a girl in every port, but Andres being Andres…. She fills him in about the fonda, Carlos, her mom's arrest…and she's about to tell him who Natalia's boss is when the rest of the family gets home.
Diego's sure it was Diana, and he wants to clear Natalia's name. He encourages Vicente to get to know her better. Grandpa lays it on thick with "You're the only grandson I have left. I can't let you make the same mistakes my daughter did. I lost Irene to a social climber."
Even after all Andres' travels, he still wishes they could all be Mexicana girls.
Vicente tells the story of the guy who was OBVIOUSLY after nothing but Irene's money. Vicente could just tell, 'cause you call always tell with "those people." He showed his true colors soon enough…he took off and abandoned her despite all his supposed love. "And that's when she started drinking. He ruined her life, and I don't want that to happen to you too." Diego sticks to his guns, saying he knows what he's doing and Irene's story isn't his. "Besides, what you're saying about my aunt doesn't square. I don't see some other guy being the reason for her suffering…looks to me like that's you."
The family party breaks up and Andres invites Natalia out for a walk. Lupita tells her brothers that if she were Natalia, she'd be all over that. Paolo reports to Abdul that Lupita's already got a couple of guys after her at school. "They're just friends!" That's how it starts, Lupita. That's how it starts.
Karina gets in touch with Diana and gets yelled at, as she was expecting. She lets slip that she also told Diego that Diana had talked to Natalia. So Diana breaks up with her. Awwwww…poor Karina. Don't worry, though, she'll come crawling back next time she needs a favor.
Padre Juancho comes over to join Paolo and Abdul and watch some fútbol. PJ hears about Andres, so he gets Paolo out of the room so he can ask Abdul if Natalia has already broken the news about Diego not being dead. Oh, that's right. Andres thinks he killed a guy.
He couldn't have been thinking about it that much…he's ready to get back to hitting on Natalia, but she tells him nothing between them has changed. She just doesn't like him like that.
Diego asks Vicente where Irene was for all that time she was missing. He never believed the "clinic in Switzerland" story. Vicente brings up Tad's name. Diego's really not buying the "social climber" thing, having met Tad. Plus, they were both "adolescents" so really, at that age, everyone's just starting out. Tad obligingly shows up, gets past Lala, and confronts Vicente in the dining room, telling him that he's got some stuff to clear up with him.
Natalia comes home, without Andres. She shows Lupita the present Andres brought her. Paolo asks for a private meeting in the kitchen.
Tad asks which of the nephews this is…Diego or Rodrigo? (Mention of Rodrigo…drink!) Irene had mentioned them to him. Vicente tells him to get out, but Tad insists on settling matters. Irene shows up. Oops.
Natalia tells Paolo that yes, she did fight with Andres, because he tried to kiss her…again. "Oh. Sucks to be him. Hey, you told him he didn't actually kill a guy, right?" Natalia said there wasn't really time what with all the thwarted wooing. Padre Juancho goes into the kitchen to have his turn at chastising Natalia. "What's going on with you? And don't say 'nothing.'" Natalia says she wants to make confession, like now, in the kitchen…she can't take it anymore! She makes him promise not to get mad at her. "Spill it, already. I'm sure it has something to do with Diego."
Now Irene tries to throw Tad out. He says he's not the only one responsible for what happened. Diego asks her to hear him out, especially now that he's heard Vicente's version. Irene scoffs at the idea of what Vicente's version of the story would have been. Tad tells Irene, "Your father is more responsible for what happened than you think. If you don't believe me, ask him who was responsible for giving me the internship in Paris. It was your father who got me out of your life."
Natalia can't even get her "confession" out without already supposing that Padre Juancho isn't going to grant her absolution and that she's going to refuse the penance he gives her. And I guess her "confession" is that Diego's the guy she first met? Padre Juancho asks if she's in love with him, which…yeah, of course. PJ gets that you can't tell the heart what to do, but he reminds her that Diego is married. "Don't do anything stupid!" Natalia says she'll just hold on to her love, is all, and she won't get in the way of their marriage.
Tad tells them what the board member said about insisting on giving Tad the scholarship. Irene leaves the dining room in tears. Diego's a little pissed that Tad would dump that on them just like that. Tad tells Vicente that he doesn't give a rat's ass about Vicente's money or his social standing or any of that crap…all he wants is the chance to talk to Irene about what really happened between them. And now that he's stirred the pot, he's out of there.
Irene, up in her room, ponders what her dad's been capable of. Considering he had her locked up in Tuxpan, she's inclined to believe Tad's story. She starts to cry that Vicente never loved her and that no one ever loved her.
Diego takes Vicente's blood pressure and insists on him taking his medicine. He won't discuss what happened, since he doesn't want to upset Vicente until his pressure comes down. He does seem to remember Vicente trying to buy someone else off, though, so there is that…"but we'll talk about that later." Irene comes in, wanting to talk to Vicente and Diego reluctantly leaves. Irene just wants to know if it's true. "Are you going to believe him? After you know what he's capable of?" She just wants a "yes" or "no" answer, and he won't give it to her, but he eventually cracks and says "What do you want to hear? That I paid for his room and board? That I praised his talent? With or without a scholarship, he left you. But I've always been here for you, supporting you." "Nice way of supporting me, locking me up in Tuxpan so no one could see me. You never came to see me. Didn't it occur to you that I might have needed your love?" Vicente says he thought he was doing the best thing for her. "If he had really loved you, he never would have left you."
Irene goes back to her room, crying. She goes for the bottle she stashed in a cabinet, but calls Alonso to tell him what Tad said. She's really confused, since as far as she's concerned, both her dad and Tad are liars. She cries about no one loving her and Alonso has a hard time convincing her that not only is she worth loving, but he loves her. She assumes he means "love" in more of a brotherly way. "I've got a bottle in front of me and I really want a drink."
Tomorrow: Diego paid Carmen's bail…yay! Diana takes some pills.
Labels: te-quiero
Now if Tadeo would just go away. I want Irene with Alonso. Even on the phone they have sizzling chemistry. I think the actor playing Alonso is going to end up stealing the show for me.
Not sure why Andres is back. This should be interesting.
I am so glad Carmen is getting out of jail!
I hope Lala takes her time calling the ambulance.
(Or, since it was 1991 "Don't worry! Be Happy!"...although that was really '89 but whatevs)
Point is, yes Vicente did orchestrate the scholarship but Tad took it happily without any sad thoughts of having to leave Irene behind. So while Vicente was wrong for orchestrating the scholarship, he wasn't all wrong that if Tad really loved Irene he wouldn't have left.
I think Tad could've left for the scholarship but expressed sadness for having to leave Irene behind, but we didn't see that. We actually need to know more about what happened after Tad left...did he write Irene and Vicente intercepted the letters? Irene was locked up in Tuxpan so it would've been easy to intercept letters coming to the Mexico City house.
If Tad DIDN'T try to contact Irene after he left, Vicente was right...Tad didn't love Irene enough to stick around.
And Irene is right too...neither Vicente nor Tad loved her.
But again, I'm still trying to figure out Tad's motivations. Is he trying to get back with Irene? Because it didn't seem like Irene had been on his mind until he saw her at the exhibition.
Is Tad trying to make amends? Because if so, ignoring her wishes to be left alone isn't the way to go.
Or is Tad just trying to be the star of The Tad Show so everyone can cry about the injustices done to him by Vicente without taking Irene's feelings into account?
Tks again 5ft, terrific
Sara, Andres is just back to stir the pot IMHO. He'll go ballistic when he see Diego and get even more angry when he learns Nat still loves him. And in spite of all this, the revelation about the evil twin will still probably not come to light.
Anon207 I think Tad doesn't want to look bad and he has some feelings for Irene. He may not be in love with her, as Variopinta mentioned he did want to establish himself, and I want Irene w/Alonso (though I hate that he's her shrink). But his trying to clear the air w/Irene though still selfish is the first step toward Tad and Irene possibly talking w/one another about their "dead" baby.
"Well, sweetie…you tried, you cried, you bought crappy cocaine and planted it in Natalia's desk and everything. Time to pack it in" and "(Mention of Rodrigo…drink!)" were but a few of my favorites.
Thank you for your tireless work on this - you always energize and invigorate the events for us.
Agree with you and Sara in being relieved Irene did not take that drink. And finally, Carmen is freed!
I am feeling a little sympathetic toward Tadeo. I do think he was utterly selfish and self absorbed but Gramps did manipulate him masterfully.
And Variopinta, you are totally on point with Gramps made Irene think her daughter died! Unforgiveable in my book.
Kat, thanks for the interesting and well written recap.
Diana
Glad you are back.
Diana
Here is my take on Tad. He was young and self absorbed , but now that he is older and has had some success. Then, he finds out that his old NOvia was pregnant with the fruit of his loins...and the embers have become a slight flame. .woulda..shoulda..coulda. Back in the day, he was more interested in Paris than Irene, so she did not come right out and tell him that she was pregnant. Young and ambitious....I'm going to Disney World...er...Paris. I wonder how Nat will be revealed as their daughter.
When Albogado, Diego and Eleazar were talking about Carmen. The comraderie was so natural and the way El talked about the kids really just made me feel all warm and fuzzy.
Also, the scene after Tadeo's revelation. Marison del Olmo really broke my heart crying and saying "no one has ever loved me." She seemed so small and fragile.
I agree with what you have all said about Tadeo. He was all about me, me, me, back then. Too focused on himself to really see that Irene had something really important on her mind. A man has to be TRYING to be obtuse to ignore the "what if I were pregnant" question from his girlfriend. Most men would be like, wait, WHAT?! Even if the woman threw it out as a hypothetical. I feel that deep in his heart, at that moment, he knew, but he chose to ignore that feeling. He was high on Paris and high on himself.
But I also understand that he's now in a very different phase of his life. A child means something very different to a successful person in their late 30s/early 40s than it does to a penniless teen/20-something. Now HE wants answers. HE wants explanations. HE wants to make excuses for himself and lay the blame on others. He's still selfish, but with a different focus/goal than before.
Sara though Robo is sad right now nothing can match PSMA for relentless assault on the good guys, who are often too stupid to live. This tn is delightful I just want Nat to learn the love of her life is not bi-polar but has an evil twin.
And Kat I like your line to Lupita "They're just friends!" That's how it starts, Lupita. That's how it starts."
This isn't a great novela, but take the guys getting plastered the other day. They actually did something. Yes, it served the plot, but it was still mostly some dudes hanging out. It felt true to life. Which is why you feel actual camaraderie between them. The relationships characters have in this novela feel real in a way that they don't in the mess in the 9 PM slot.
Without the knowledge of the pregnancy, Tadeo SHOULD NOT have stayed around. He was young and just starting out. I'd advise any young person to go off to that college instead of sticking around for their high school honey. Tadeo was not wrong for accepting the scholarship and moving to France. Realistically at that age, or at any age, it would be hard to sustain a relationship across different countries and continents.
I also understand the need for Tadeo to learn about his dead child after all these years. I just don't agree with the way he's going about it. He's like a bull in a china shop and just like back in '91 he wants what he wants when he wants it which is now.
They've mentioned Rodrigo several times in this episode and Vicente said to Diego that D was the only grandson he had left. So does that mean Rod died or is in a vegatative state? I can't see much purpose for Rod anymore unless he's going to team up with Diana to split up Diego & Natalia. It doesn't seem like the A-team is into frat boy hijinks like they were before.
Anon255-well said about the characters and how they are written.
Anon207- I also find myself more interested in the side stories.
I agree, I want to see an Irene-Alonso pairing!
Maybe Andres is back to force the confrontation that ends The Great Misunderstanding?
I wonder if Tad would have deserved the scholarship/internship in the first place. Was he really a solid contender, or would he never have had a chance if Vicente hadn't pulled strings? I would guess that he's legit now. In a way, (minus the pregnancy) Tad and Irene's breakup is like high school couples breaking up when it's time to go to college. I must be getting less romantic in my middle age, because I dislike the idea that one or both parties should pass up an educational experience in order to "be together." If the relationship is solid enough, you'll still "be together"...later. Anon 207, Tad is SO the star of The Tad Show!
