Por Siempre Mi Amor #103 (Mex #142) 4/28/14 The Alliance from Hell
We have had such a great discussion going on in the comments about the men in this telenovela. There seems to be unanimous agreement that Arturo is the worst galan ever and the rest of the men (with the exception of Mauricio and perhaps Fabricio) are selfish wimps who are dumber than dryer lint. None of our female commenters would ever want to be stuck with Arturo and we don't want Isabel to be stuck with him either.
What has happened to the men in telenovelas? Maybe it's a reflection of what is happening to men in our society. The following paragraphs are taken from an article titled "Camille Paglia: A Feminist Defense of Masculine Virtues" published in the Wall Street Journal in Dec. 2013.
"What you're seeing is how a civilization commits suicide," says Camille Paglia. ...her indictment may be as surprising as it is wide-ranging ... But no subject gets her going more than when I ask if she really sees a connection between society's attempts to paper over the biological distinction between men and women and the collapse of Western civilization.
... Ms. Paglia argues that the softening of modern American society begins as early as kindergarten. "Primary-school education is a crock, basically. It's oppressive to anyone with physical energy, especially guys," she says, pointing to the most obvious example: the way many schools have cut recess. "They're making a toxic environment for boys. Primary education does everything in its power to turn boys into neuters."
... The notion was once met with derision, but now data back it up: Almost one in five high-school-age boys has been diagnosed with ADHD, boys get worse grades than girls and are less likely to go to college. ... She [Paglia] sees the tacit elevation of "female values" - such as sensitivity, socialization and cooperation - as the main aim of teachers, rather than fostering creative energy and teaching hard geographical and historical facts.
... By her lights, things only get worse in higher education. "This PC gender politics thing - the way gender is being taught in the universities - in a very anti-male way, it's all about neutralization of maleness." The result: Upper-middle-class men who are "intimidated" and "can't say anything... They understand the agenda."
...Politically correct, inadequate education, along with the decline of America's brawny industrial base, leaves many men with "no models of manhood," she says. "Masculinity is just becoming something that is imitated from the movies. There's nothing left. There's no room for anything manly right now." The only place you can hear what men really feel these days, she claims, is on sports radio. No surprise, she is an avid listener. The energy and enthusiasm "inspires me as a writer," she says, adding: "If we had to go to war," the callers "are the men that would save the nation."

What do you think? Does the weak, selfish and ineffectual Arturo mirror the destruction of the male role model? Is Arturo a product of the times or is he just the result of bad writing?
In my opinion there are some basic things that that qualify guys for a Man Card. These are "Manly" things that almost all men used to be able to do. I'm sorry to say this but I've met very few young men who can actually do these things or who even want to try. And lest you think this stuff is hard, I learned how to do all of these as a girl.
- Know how to change a flat tire.
- Know how to build a campfire.
- Knows what each item in a standard toolbox is and, more importantly, knows how to use them. (The old saying, "When all you have is a hammer everything in the world is a nail" doesn't work in reality.
- Can drive a vehicle with a stick shift.
- Can change the oil in a car.
- Knows how to jump start a vehicle if the battery is dead.
- Knows how to catch, clean and cook a fish, rabbit, duck or any small animal that could be dinner.
- Knows how to handle, load and shoot a gun.
- Knows what a shovel is for and how to use one.
- Doesn't completely freak out or faint at the sight of blood. (Very useful when you have kids.)
The bottom line for me is this: A real man can take care of himself and the people he loves. I want to know that if I were stuck in the wilderness with a guy, we would be able to work together to survive. I don't want to have to save his ass as well as my own.

Now to the recap -
Isabel cries to the doctor that she was happy with her husband and her daughter. She had a family and that man stole it. She tries to tell him her story about the accident, amnesia and Javier, "I know it's hard to believe, but I'll prove it's all true." The doctor tells her if she calms down he'll let her go to a regular room.
Gabi and Mauricio talk to Dr. Jara, the physician who treated Isabel after the accident. The doctor says Isabel is living 10 years in the past. She left of her own accord with her friend. He doesn't know the guy's name, but he gives a description that matches Javier. Dr. Jara tells them that Isabel called yesterday asking if anyone was looking for her. She said it was hard to remember things, but she was fine otherwise. He gives Gabi the card of the police officer who was looking into the case.
Cuca visits Sonia who isn't happy to see her. Cuca now knows that Mari isn't Sonia's daughter. But she wants to know what happened to the other child that Sonia abandoned. She chides Sonia for being so hard hearted. Sonia snaps, "I'm sick of your lectures." Cuca says, "Nothing has changed you. Not even the love of a good man."
At a coffee shop Marcela smiles a big fake smile and asks Javier what he wants. She is stunned when Javier reveals that Isabel is pregnant with Arturo's child and further, if Arturo finds out, he and Isabel might get back together.
A nurse brings the pregnancy test to the Doctor and yes, it's positive. Isabel isn't lying, she's pregnant. The doctor tells Isabel that tomorrow a committee will evaluate her. "We'll discuss what is reality and what is fantasy." He urges her to calm down and get some rest.
Marcela sits down, "Isabel cannot be pregnant!" Why not? Lady do you actually believe your own diagnosis? "Yes, she is." Javier insists, "and your meddling ruined my plans and helped Arturo to find us. I would have succeeded if you hadn't interfered." Marcela asks, "Are you in love with Isabel?" "She's the only woman I've ever loved. If you want me to get Isabel out of Arturo's life so you can have him for yourself, you need to help me."
Gabi speaks with Officer Rosas on the phone. He asks her to come to his office to discuss Isabel's case.
Javier tells Marcela that Isabel had amnesia and thought he was her dead husband. But she's recovered her memory and he had her put in a psychiatric hospital. "If she escapes she'll tell Arturo and I'll be charged with kidnapping." Javier wants Marcela to create a medical history for Isabel with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. He explains his plan. "Understand?" Marcela smiles wickedly, "Perfectly." He smiles back, "Can I count on you?" "Of course." They shake hands.
Ileana and Borlas talk about Mari and Dan. Ileana confesses that she had feelings for Dan and hoped something would grow. Borlas felt the same way about Mari. Both of them are glad that Mari and Dan can now be happy together. Ileana has to go to the hospital to see her friend. Borlas asks if he can come along.
Mauricio and Gabi go to the police station to talk to Officer Rosas. Gabi tells him about Isabel's accident, her memory loss and the doctor's description of the man that Isabel left with. The description fits Javier Castillo. Gabi thinks Isabel mistakenly thought Javier was her ex-husband. But now Gabi fears Javier is holding Isabel against her will. "Please do something. My friend is in terrible danger." Officer Rosas will do some investigating. He asks Gabi to tell him everything she knows about Javier Castillo.
Sonia's friend Lucero wheels her luggage down the sidewalk and runs right into Gil. She can't stop to talk, she's headed for the airport and doesn't want to miss her plane. Gil offers to drive her there.
Ileana tells Aranza that as soon as Dafne recovers, Esteban wants to break-up with her and be with Aranza. (I've got a better idea. I think Esteban needs to look into the priesthood.) Aranza doesn't think that will happen because Esteban told her he had feelings for Dafne. But Aranza knows that she has always loved Esteban. My eyes just rolled so far back in my head I can see what my hair looks like from behind without using a mirror.
At the hospital Esteban assures Dafne that she's going to be fine. She whines and clings because nothing says "I love you" more than being a total burden. Dafne thought bubbles, "You're going to leave me as soon as I can walk. But like it or not you'll always be tied to me."
Isabel paces her cell. "He can't get away with this." She tells herself she needs to stay calm and be coherent. "They can call Gabi, Andrea, Mauricio and Tita. They'll back up my story."
The next morning Marcela arrives at the manicomio and hands the doctor Isabel's fake medical file. "She was diagnosed with schizophrenia many years ago."
Arturo says Edgar can no longer be his lawyer. Edgar's work for Isabel creates a conflict of interest so he's getting another attorney. "Marcela recommended a good lawyer." Edgar looks somewhat taken aback but says he'll respect Arturo's decision. Before leaving Edgar makes it clear that he thinks Isabel is an outstanding woman, no matter what Arturo or anyone else says about her.
Marcela tells the doctor that she is a specialist in psychiatric problems and then outlines her version of Isabel's supposed mental problems. "Her schizophrenia has been getting worse and worse. We can't treat her with medication because of the baby. She's gone from bad to worse and she tried to kill her husband. She talks about all these imaginary friends and it's all due to her disease." Karma better be coming soon for this witch.
At home Mauricio tells Andrea about Isabel's memory loss. Andrea is shocked then asks, "But what if Javier really is Fernando? Isabel said Fernando is alive!" Mauricio doesn't want to go over it again, Fernando is dead. But Andrea insists she needs evidence. Mauricio agrees to talk to the warden. "I'll do it for you."
Officer Rosas goes to Fabricio's office and explains that Isabel had an accident and had amnesia. She left the hospital thinking she was going with her ex-husband. Fabricio says that's not the version of events he heard. His brother Arturo says that Isabel had a relationship with Javier. Fabricio looks confused and doubtful, he doesn't know which story to believe. He offers to give Officer Rosas Javier's personnel file and suggests he talk to Sonia Arenas. She's known Javier Castillo for a long time.
Dan and Fabricio talk. Dan is sorry he couldn't tell Fabricio the truth. Fab says Dan has nothing to apologize for. Sonia was the one who lied. They both agree that the events shouldn't change their relationship.
Gil tells Agatha that Lucero left Sonia's baby at a church in the south of the city. He and Agatha are excited about working together to find the boy.
Lucero tells Sonia that Gil caught her before she could leave. She had to tell him something, so she told him she left the kid at some church south of the city. But Sonia shouldn't worry because there are hundreds of churches in that area! Sonia hangs up and fumes, "I hope my dad stops looking for that bastard."
Marcela is pleased with herself. She brags to Javier that Isabel will never get out of the manicomio. In 22 years she could never forget Arturo. She spent those years studying psychiatric problems (not her own I take it) and she doesn't want to lose Arturo now. She wants Javier to make sure Isabel doesn't get out. Javier grins, "Trust me."
Isabel faces a panel of three doctors. She tells them about Feo and his plan for revenge. Her friends, Gabriela San Roman and Andrea Guiterriez can confirm her story. The doctor tells her they received her history of mental illness from Dr. Marcela Zambrano. Isabel gets agitated. "That woman wants my husband! She betrayed me!" Isabel jumps up from her chair and starts screaming at the doctors. "Let me out of here! Let me out of here!" The attendants grab hold of her and drag her from the room.
At Ikani, Gabi asks for Arturo. Bruno sees her and says that Arturo has gone to the hospital to see Dafne and besides, Art doesn't want to hear anything about Isabel. Bruno takes Gabi to talk in his office.
Officer Rosas questions Sonia about Isabel and Javier. Sonia plays dumb. She used to know Javier, but they've gone their separate ways. She has no idea where he is now. The cop gives her his card and asks her to contact him if she has any information. He looks like he knows Sonia is lying.
Gabi tells Bruno about Isabel's accident and her amnesia. He says it's all too weird. "Yes, it's weird, but it's true. Why would Isabel leave without thinking about her company?" Ally arrives at the office and spies on them through the blinds. Gabi continues, "I know Javier kidnapped her." Bruno is sorry, but Arturo doesn't care. He doesn't want to hear about Isabel's accident or her amnesia. Isabel is dead to him. Bruno gives a half-hearted offer of help which just makes Gabi angry. "Isabel's real friends and I will find her."
Sonia muses to herself, "Should I tell Fernando the police are looking for him? No. He screwed up my plans. If he gets caught holding Isabel I don't care."
At the hospital the doctor checks Dafne's reflexes. He and Esteban help her to her feet but she falls again, "I can't do it!" The doctor can't understand why Dafne isn't making progress in her recovery. She asks, "Are you saying I'm refusing to walk?"
After Gabi leaves Ally comes into Bruno's office. She has the legal papers for the next anchor kid she's going to tie to Bruno adopt. Ally asks why Gabi was at the office. Bruno answers, "She came to see Arturo."
"Arturo.... or you?"
Bruno explains about Isabel's accident. Ally scoffs that it's just another lie of Gabriela's to make Arturo forgive Isabel.
Marcela joins the happy crowd celebrating Dafne's Invalidpalooza. (She whines and cries and they try to cheer her up by telling her how much they love her. See how that works?) Esteban and the doctor lift Dafne back onto the bed. I wonder how fast she'd regain her feet if they "accidentally" dropped her? After Art, Araganza and Este leave the room the doctor continues his exam by poking Dafne's toes and running his finger along the soles of her feet. She says she can't feel anything. He tests again using ice. Still nothing.
Esteban says it breaks his heart to see Dafne like this. He blames himself. Arturo and Aranza tell him it's not his fault. Esteban swears he's not going anywhere until Dafne can walk again.
The real doctor tells Marcela they need to get a specialist. Yes, when you have a fake doctor consulting on a faking patient you need to call a specialist. Or an exorcist. Dafne says Arturo doesn't have the money to pay for a specialist. She just wants to go home.
Ally has come to Casa Arte to ask why Gabi is still after Bruno. Ally thinks Gabi used Isabel as an excuse to talk to her husband. Good grief. There is nothing more unattractive than a jealous harpy with a lisp.
Sonia opens the door to Fabricio. She is delighted to see him, "Mi Amor! You've come back!" Fab's carrying a folder. Uh Oh. He hasn't come to reconcile, he's come to give her divorce papers. Wow. This guy is even faster out of the lawyer's office than Arturo! Sonia starts apologizing for lying about the baby. It wasn't her fault, she was young and couldn't keep the kid! But Fabricio says it's not just the baby, it's all the lies Sonia has told him from the very beginning. He'll give her half of everything he has just to be a free man. Sonia rips up the papers. She tells him she doesn't care about the money, the half of everything. The only thing she cares about is love. She drops to her knees and begs him to reconsider. Fabricio tells her not to humiliate herself. He's divorcing her with or without her consent. He walks out the door. Sonia sits sobbing on the floor.
Feo sits across a small table from Isabel. He brags about how Marcela helped him get Isabel confined to the manicomio. Isabel will spend the rest of her life here. She'll never get out. "You were crazy for me. But then you sent me to prison. I swore I'd get revenge." She slaps him. He laughs. "Hit me! Hit me! Hit me! Go ahead and prove to everybody watching that you're crazy." He tells her about his plans to get rid of Esteban. He tried several times. Isabel hisses, "Andrea was right. It was you behind all this." He laughs, "It wasn't that imbecile Gonzalo. I've always been behind it all."

(Before I start, great recap! I laughed, cried and concealing my emotions oh I failed before I even tried! Yes almost every male in this novela aside from Mao and Fab are selfish. However, BonBon isn't selfish right? Cristian albeit not here anymore wasn't selfish in the slightest. Illeana's dad technically isn't selfish LOL. Gil has mended his ways for the most part. The bikers aren't selfish. Dan has improved although he didn't really need to (I think his short-lived fling with Ileana was more like a temporary reward for the girl because she loved him and did deserve his even if he wasn't her destino.)Edgar isn't selfish. I'm just saying LOL.

She could have told them to call Andrea, get a DNA test with Feo and Andrea's kids, so many things.

Great recap! I decided not to watch because I just can't take Isa being locked up like this. Thank goodness for the Casa Arte team and Edgar. They won't give up and I'm sure they'll find Isa. And at least we know they won't be shooting her up with drugs because of the pregnancy.
As Corazon noted, there actually are a ton of good guys in this tn, they are just supporting players. I never understood why Gabi was never interested in Edgar. Remember, he professed his love for her at the beginning of the tn and she turned him down Andy recognized a quality man when she met him, and married him.
Sonia also recognized a quality man with Fab, but she doesn't deserve him. I'm not sure she loves him (is she capable?), but I do think she loves being a respectable married lady, married to a young, attractive, successful, rich man, who treats her with love and respect. He's also been her ticket back into society. Why would she want to go back to living in the shadows and pimping herself out? She's too old for that now.

Xint, inspired Camille Paglia opening. What an exciting, riveting recap! This was spectacular. Thank you for the multitude of details and the perfect title.

She has been hit with one unholy revelation after the other with the final straw that the evil doctora has once again conspired against her. Why aren't the doctors at least calling Gabi and Andrea?” She has mentioned Gaby several times which seems to have fallen on deaf ears. How awful and frustrating this is. However, we must take heart with only 9 episodes left..

I have to say that I don't agree with the article and I am happy to say that it reflects one woman's opinion. Since the women of today have equal access to many of items on your "man card" checklist, I know many men that can do at least 6 or more of your criteria. BTW- I don't want anyone who can "Knows how to catch, clean and cook a fish, rabbit, duck or any small animal that could be dinner." I appreciate that they can cook period.
But I digress, this novela has a lack of "manly" main character men due to the lack of creativity with the writers. Thank you, Corazon- GIl, once he found the love of a good woman to set him straight and Christian, Edgar, Este and YESSS- the bikers are good examples.
On to the recap- it was an infuriating episode. Why doesn't anyone follow up? I find it hard to believe that someone can just drop off a person at a mental institution without any preliminary background/ medical checks. I have lost all faith with the police (especially with Methuselah still free) and wonder if they will redeem themselves and solve this case or bumble this one up too.
UA- Daphne is definitely going to play the "I can't feel my legs" card- ugh!!! Too bad that the doctor didn't use a candle by her toes.
Isa needs to calm down and make up her own plan starting with asking to see Gaby, she did mention her name to the doctor but I'm not sure if he followed up.

Oh and I was really annoyed by Aranza's continued narcissism. She says how she wants Este back, but with the Duck being in that state she wouldn't dare. She just naturally assumes that she can have Este back after all she did just because she wants him.

Yeah, not caring that Isa might be hurt/injured, and/or not believing it, catapulted Art into the worst galan spot ahead of Octavio in CI.
I remember in Sortilegio, when galan Alex was being a particularly jealous jerk, the bad guys had planted all kinds of evidence to make it look like MJ was having an affair, and he kicked her out of the house (very in-galant of him). But he still sent someone to check up on her and her family to see they were ok, and as soon as he heard she had passed out in the heat, he high tailed it over to her to make sure she was alright. Then he found out she was pregnant, and his concern level sky rocketed-- no question about whose baby it was.
The fact that I have not read of Art being concerned at all for Isa's welfare in the past many episodes since he kicked her out is maddening.

The point of a galan is to care about the prota-even if they're on a 'break.' Art is a product of crappy writing not lack of machismo; this is Mexico after all. Camille LaPaglia wouldn't apply. Art has been crappy since Eugenia died.
I'm missing Ricky-ascot and all, from MPV, who had all the classic protective galan instincts-who would never have allowed Isa to go this far from him even during a divorce. Galans want to reconcile with the prota. The fact that Art is so bent on Marcela is atypical novela from my experience.

I will be very upset when Isa forgives fArt for acting like a heartless fool. What I cannot stand is the fact that fArt has no compassion for Isa. I do not care if he feels betrayed (though it is not true). If he had one drop of human kindness inside him, he would be concerned that she is in trouble. When I was 16 , I had a bad car accident. The guy who had just broken up with me, never called, sent a card, or came to see me. However, the boy that I left for him brought my two best friends to the hospital pretty far away to visit me. When I got home, he visited me several times. He was a very good guy who was concerned about me. fArt is not a good person. I will be very unhappy when he crawls back to Isa and she takes him back in the end. He dies not deserve Isa. I would like to see her with a good guy who appreciates her.

Sara, loved your "Any enemy of Isa is my enemy, too. Don't mess with my girl!" Unfortunately I feel the writers are now trying to make Ally bad so when her marriage dissolves we are supposed to blame her for being irrationally jealous and not her lame husband.
While Edgar services are being paid for, his continued support of Gabi and looking Isa should make Gabi think twice about her love for a louse. Every time she talks w/Bruno about her BFF his first response is wrong.
TJ, ITA the episode sounded infuriating, like Diana I couldn't watch Isa continue to suffer. I think CD is right and they are following an older script.
Vivi posted great clips about the remakes related to Amor Bravio but in each tn remake they updated how the protagonists interacted/reacted based on times. This tn and aspects of Robo seem to not update certain elements of characters and male-female dynamics in ways that are an uncomfortable throw back b/c the women are often abused, physically, mentally, and emotionally, by men who supposedly love them.
CD having Osvy turn bad would be an interesting twist but the fact that he kept wanting fArt w/a psycho makes him look bad, along w/his looking down on Sonia when he had an affair on his wife and a child from the affair.

It would be nice if neither she nor Este could get over the fact she slept with his DAD and move to other people. She can end the tn alone but I want Este w/Ileana (unless Christian comes back or tofie's suggestion of Fab).

Great recap, Xint! Especially your eyes rolling so far back in your head that you could see your hair was hilarious! To be politically correct today everything must be unisex. Personally I prefer old fashioned masculinity because I knew men like that would protect you.

Yes, I think that the writers are trying to make Ally more shrewish so that poor Bruno can look less oath itch when he tries to get back with his one true love. She was wearing a lot of eye makeup last night. Gaby..run..run away speedy quick. I think that Gabi and steadfast , loyal, intelligent Edgar would be a great combo, but we all know that Gabi and Bruno have been planned as a pair in the end. I would like to see Isa ride away with one of those good hearted bikers. Or fab would be a good guy for either Isa or Gabi. fArt and Bruno can get a bachelor lad together. Oscar and Felix. But Art has always been the worst galan. His spoilt brat of a daughter, her only closeness was to her mother, and she went overboard after she died. She never had a closeness with Art. Why would she take Sonia's word over him? So he's never been a good galan from the first episode. I am not surprised by his reactions at this stage of the game.

Sara, I agree. No matter how she feels about Gabi and Bruno and their drama, Isa has been warm and welcoming to Ally from Day 1. There is no reason why Ally should be badmouthing and doubting Isa, and talking smack about her.
I always found it interesting that even after Art and Ossie made up, Isa remained really formal with Ossie, calling him Senor and using Usted with him. Now I see the writers might have always wanted to leave a bit of a barrier up between the two characters so that it wouldn't seem so odd when he jumped on to Marcela's bandwagon and turned against Isa. How in the heck is Tita keeping herself from hitting him over the head with a skillet? Or have they just agreed to disagree on the subject of Isa for the sake of their marriage?
While I'm really sympathetic to Isabel and like Gabi bunches, I think Isabel is guilty in Ally's world right now by association. Is she making a mess of it after taking it and taking it and trying to ignore Bruno sniffing around Gabi like a hound, yes. Gabi got (and Isabel) the dressing down because Ally's comments to Bruno fall on deaf ears. I hate the writers will make a crazy shrew (why don't they just shoot her and be done with it) out of an otherwise mild mannered woman and ain't buying it. The clowns own mother purposefully put the two of them together to "test" their feelings and guess what, both of them were salivating over each other quietly. Had Bruno been my husband and he disrespected me over and over and over again and all the nut case friends and family of his dismiss it because, after all Gabi is the love of his life, I'd be gone.
As I've said before, it has always felt like there was a plan to this show. I've always had the feeling the writers had a destination in mind. Vivi your comment about Ossified (not an autocorrect) just confirms my feeling.

Sara- Once again I think that the Bruno-Gabi-Ally storyline had a major re-write because of the actor's pregnancy. I am unsure about what the writers will do, but now that they are turning Ally into a shrew, it seems that more likely that they will match up Bruno and Gabi. But what about the adopted kids?! If the adopted kids weren't in the picture, I would be 100% sure that Bruno and Ally were done for.
tofie..me, too. I would not want someone who did not want me. Bruno is a weakling. He should have either been honest and told Ally that he would always love Gaby and let Ally make a life for herself or he should have been a good and faithful husband and stopped the constant contact with Gaby. instead, he sat in the fence mooning over Gaby while poor Ally sat and watched. It is time for someone to be proactive, and I think that it will have to be ally finally cutting Bruno a adrift to pant after Gaby. I have no respect for these people.

Tofie- Tita long ago accused Art of being just as stubborn, prideful, and arrogant as his father. I think she even accused Ara of the same thing once before. The de la Riva traits run strong in those three.
