Lo Que La Vida Me Robó, #136, 5-21-2014: No Te Queda Nada Más, Alejandro! Our Poor Galán Lives Out the Grim Promise of this TN's Theme Song

Lo refrito:  Graciela screams at Rosario to shut up already with the gratuitous advice about the way Gracie treats her children when Rosario knows nothing about Gracie's situation or past.  Gracie adds in some bitter recriminations about the fact that Rosario has alienated Graciela from her own children while simultaneously  gloating in the knowledge that Rosario had to pay the price of losing her own beloved son, Alejandro.

Lordy, that's some impressive combo of bitterness and spitefulness!

Aye, aye, Captain--not!

Monica's Place:  Dim and Monica return from sending off Montse, J-L and little Lauro on the plane carrying them away on their honeymoon trip.  They comment about how excited Laurito was to fly for the first time as they snuggle a bit on the couch.  Monica comments that it was a good ending what was to a difficult day for the three of them.  DIM reminds her that Lauro didn't really realize what was happening, but Monica quickly explains that the third person she is referring to isn't Lauro--it's Graciela.  Monica says she's happy DIM is with her now, but she tells him she thinks he really should reach out to his mother, that Graciela must feel lonely and needs him.  He brushes this off and says that Gracie is staying with Rosario tonight and assures Monica the two women are 'good friends.'

Not buying this, Monica presses DIM again, but he tells her he doesn't want to talk about it now.  He says doesn't have a good relationship with his mother.  But Monica keeps insisting and also wants DIM to open himself up more in general--to have faith in her and to talk about his problems now that they're starting a more serious relationship.  She wants to know why he puts up a barrier with his constant cynicism.  She's opened herself to him, taken a risk and told him she's in love with him.  She wants to tell him about her experiences, her dreams, and wants him to do the same with her or she fears they won't have a future.  But DIM says he's tired and continues to be hostile about her need for him "to talk" and says he doesn't like dredging up his personal things, adding meanly that he just can't have intimate conversation on orders, Captain Monica!   Fed up and defensive, he says they'll see each other later and walks out.

Painful Memories # 1

In another part of Agua Azul, Nadia cries in room alone, remembering Victor and the day that Victoria was born.  She was in despair at not being able to see the baby, also fearing that as a blind person that she wouldn't be able to care for the baby properly.  Victor said he would give anything if he were blind instead of Nadia, but told Nadia that she wasn't alone that they would learn to do it together and urged her to see the baby as a blessing.  Nadia said she was grateful for the gift of their child, but still didn't know what to do and it broke her heart not to be able to see her baby.  She begged Victor to help her and to be her eyes. He insisted that he would be better and asked Nadia open up her arms so he could give her the baby.  Nadia was fearful, but Victor urged Nadia with quiet confidence and proceeded to have Nadia touch the baby and feel the baby's sweet face and little body and gave Nadia her first feelings of hope and confidence.  They laughed and cried together with their joy for their new daughter.

Back in her room by herself in the present moment, Nadia cries again as she remembers all this and calls out, "Victor, my love!"

El Perdedor

Josefina's House, Agua Azul:  Alejandro understands now that Graciela knew that he was alive and in a coma for many years and said nothing to Montse.  Josefina asks Alejandro to forgive her for not telling Montse, either, but Josefina believed it was best for Montse given the fact that Josefina believed he was still in a coma.  Alejandro agrees it wouldn't have been fair to Montse to be stuck with him stuck in a bed, but now that he's awake he realizes everything is lost to him:  his wife, his child, even his name.  Alejandro Almonte doesn't exist.

Poor Alejandro is in tremendous despair, understandably emotional and crying in front of both Josefina and Victor.  Alejandro realizes he must also accept now that José-Luis has carried Montse and Lauro away on a trip which Alejandro and Montserrat, for one reason or another, never got to have themselves after they got married.   Victor wonders if Alejandro saw Rosario at the house, but he says no, she'd gone to the airport, too.  Josefina suggests that Alejandro try to see Rosario, and he agrees, saying he feels lost and realizing he needs his mother more than ever.  He needs a hug--for her to tell him that everything will be all right even if it's a lie.  Josefina cautions Alejandro not to leave the house since it's dangerous but promises him she will look for Rosario first thing in the morning and bring her to him.

If He Could See Them Now, He'd Be Even More Depressed

Miami, Florida, USA:  Guess we know we're in the States since a kind of hip-hopish soundtrack is playing as the scene opens along with what looks like a nightscape of South Beach.  Montserrat and José-Luis (carrying the conveniently sleeping Laurito) enter their honeymoon suite.  They take Laurito to his bedroom, tucking him in gently and turning off the lights and with José-Luis making a comment about closing the door.

Now on to the moment that J-L has been waiting for ever since that first time long ago when he and Montse hooked up in a river in episode 3 or 4.

Montserrat says her high heels are hurting, as José-Luis swoops her up in his arms and carries her into their bedroom as she exclaims, "How romantic!"

In the master suite, J-L puts Montse down on the bed and goes to close their bedroom door, too--guess he's worried Lauro might feel the urge in the middle of night and walk in on the much anticipated honeymoon action.  J-L kneels down and takes off Montse's heels (Montse get some flip flops for plane trips next time, please!), and massages her feet:
"Is that better?" he asks.
"Better, yes," she says.
He kisses her feet.
(Could it be that J-L has a foot fetish?  I seem to remember on his wedding night with our beloved Angélica, he enjoyed some sexy time with some of her toes, too.)

J-L kisses Montse more passionately on the mouth now, pulls off one of what seems an inexhaustible supply of sports coats he is always sporting, and then takes off his own shirt.  He unbuttons her blouse, revealing her lacy black bra, leans her back on the bed, and kisses her some more.  He unbuckles the belt on her pants.  They roll around some on the bed, and now both are starting to get pretty excited.

Determined To Have An Affair With His Own Wife

Back in Josefina's House in Agual Azul, Alejandro continues his overnight vigil tormented by thoughts of J-L and Montse together.  Victor comes in, noting how neither of them can sleep.  Alejandro comments that he is in anguish thinking about Montse with J-L, unable to do anything.  Victor says he knows how Alejandro feels, but an emotional Alejandro corrects him, saying that Victor has no idea how he (Alejandro) feels.  Victor reminds Alejandro that Victor's own love, Nadia, has also returned to live with her former husband Pedro, but Alejandro tells him that at least Victor has the consolation of knowing that Pedro never touched Nadia as a woman, unlike J-L and Montse.  Alejandro worries that maybe even Montserrat is in love with José-Luis again, though Victor assures Alejandro that he is the love of Montserrat's life.  Alejandro says that Montse loved him but that many things have changed, but Victor is certain that when Montserrat knows that Alejandro is alive again all that great love she has for him will return in force.

Still Alejandro continues with self-recrimination, claiming that Graciela was right, it's his own damn fault, that he is the one who is responsible for returning Montse to J-L's arms.  Victor realizes Alejandro means the recording that he made on his smart phone proclaiming that J-L was a good man and Alejandro notes that J-L really knew how to take advantage of the situation.  Alejandro then tells Victor that Montserrat is expecting J-L's child--actually, he's not sure if it's true, but this is what Graciela told him was the reason that J-L and Montse decided to get married.

Victor wisely urges Alejandro not to accept this from Gracie given the fact that she and Pedro Medina are probably accomplices.  Alejandro says maybe, but that all he knows is that his own soul is in pieces and that he also realizes now how J-L felt when he (Alejandro) married Montse, how awful it must have been for J-L to know that Alejandro was spending all his nights with Montse.  Victor comments that this was why J-L pretended to be the capataz and was determined to get Montse back and wants to know what Alejandro will do now in his turn.  Alejandro vows he's going to achieve what J-L couldn't:  he (Alejandro) is going to find Montse and become her lover.  Alejandro is going to get Montserrat back!

Making Alejandro's Worst Fears a Reality

Miami:  J-L and Montse are without clothes now and under the sheets.  They kiss more and J-L seems ready finally to consummate the marriage when suddenly Montse pulls away from him and turns on her side.  J-L asks what's happening.  Montse says she's nervous, and he tells her to be calm, everything is fine.  She says that it's just that it's been a long time, er--many years have passed since she….  But he assures here he understands all too well:  it's also been seven years since he's been with a woman.  Moved and surprised to hear this, she wonders if it's really true?  He tells her he's been waiting for this moment and that he loves her.  They kiss some more, and it looks like she's getting over her last attack of nerves, and my best guess is the consummation is now official.

Setting the Stage for a Second Duel on the Playa, Perhaps?

Back in Agua Azul, Victor begs Alejandro to stop thinking about his own pain and to think of Montse instead, that maybe she's in love with J-L.  Alejandro declares it's not important to him if she loves J-L or how much--Alejandro vow he's never going to renounce Montse, never ever!  Victor reminds Alejandro that J-L is now Montse's husband, and he just won't resign himself to losing her and that Alejandro is going to provoke a confrontation between the two of them.  "Let him kill me," cries Alejandro.  "Or I can kill him!"  Victor urges Alejandro to stop saying stupid things--they need to sleep and can talk about it more tomorrow.  But Alejandro vows there's nothing more to think about.  He's going to get Montse back even if he dies while trying.  Once again, Victor begs Alejandro to sleep on it.  It's been a difficult day for them all.

But Alejandro says there's another thing that's worrying him, too.  Graciela told him she's give him a day to leave town before she went to the police.  Victor is immediately worried that she might also tell Medina.  Alejandro says he told her he would leave and will lie low until Montse returns from her trip.  Victor urges Alejandro to andar con pies de plomo--to proceed with great care.

DIM Does The Seemingly Impossible and Actually Gives Carlotta TMI

Next day, Mansion Mendoza-Basurto.   Carlotta wakes up DIM, who has spent the night on one of the sofas in the living room.  She wants to know why he's there and not in his room--and he says something about Gracie being at his house and not wanting to stay with her and also not wanting to stay overnight with Monica, either.  Carlotta is actually pleased by this at first, taking it as a sign that Monica is 'good' girl and that DIM respects his new girlfriend and is behaving like a gentleman.  But DIM quickly sets her straight about his sex life with Monica and reminds Carlotta when she's shocked at his crassness, that this is nothing more than she and EZ have done together.

Carlotta says it's different--she and EZ are married.  But then she's back at him in another way, wanting to know why DIM would then prefer to sleep on the uncomfortable sofa instead of with his novia.  DIM shows some frustration and says it's because all women want to do is talk and talk and that Monica and he fought because she was asking questions that he didn't want to answer.  What kind?  Carlotta wants to know.  Personal questions, says DIM.  Carlotta says it's natural that Monica is interested in DIM and wants to know more about him each day.  DIM needs to learns to talk about things that are sometimes uncomfortable, otherwise his relationship with Monica will be over.  She lectures DIM that the most important thing in any relationship is communication and DIM is back at her, implying that Carlotta probably never shuts her mouth with her own husband.  She calls him a grosero to end the scene.

All DIM's Women Converge

Montserrat's House, Agua Azul.  Rosario and Gracie exchange unenthusiastic good-mornings, as Rosario enquires if Gracie is staying much longer.  Gracie informs Rosario that she doesn't like being there, either, and plans to go back to her own house that very day.  Rosario says she's on her way to go shopping and asks if Gracie wants to come along.  Gracie says no way, to leave her in peace to drink her coffee, though comments sarcastically that Rosario is dressed pretty elegantly for going to the market.

Rosario leaves and just as soon the bell rings, and Gracie has to go to answer the door, mumbling how stupid Rosario must have forgotten something.  However, surprise, it's not Rosario at all, but Captain Monica instead, looking for DIM.  Gracie invites her to come and asks about her bebé.  Monica says she doesn't know where he is and that is exactly why she came over--to look for him.

Monica starts to excuse herself when she realizes DIM isn't there, but Gracie asks her to stay and comments that they can have some coffee while they wait for him.  It will give them a chance to know each other better if they can talk alone.  At that moment, Josefina comes in and Gracie asks her meanly what she wants and supposes that Josefina, too, came looking for DIM to bother him again.  But Josefina says no, that she came to talk to Rosario.

Gracie says that Rosario isn't there, either, and has gone to the market.  Gracie tells Monica to go and have some coffee and, after Monica has left them, Gracie tells Josefina more brusquely that they need to talk.  Gracie goes outside with Josefina and immediately gets angry at her, demanding to know why Josefina didn't tell her that Alejandro was among the conscious and in town.  She (Gracie) nearly had a heart attack when she saw him.  Josefina is back at Gracie, though, says there are some things that she and Graciela need to clear up and wants to know why Gracie tricked her?  Why did Gracie lead Josefina to believe that she was talking to Nadia in Buenos Aires when Nadia was actually in Agua Azul and had been for a few days.  Josefina wants to know where Nadia is, but Graciela tells her dismissively that Josefina should ask Pedro about Nadia.  He's her husband, after all.  But Josefina isn't daunted by Gracie dismissal and instead wants to know exactly what Graciela is up to with Pedro.

Graciela goes on the attack instead and wonders if now Josefina is worried that she (Graciela) will go around telling everyone that Alejandro is in Agua Azul?  Josefina says Gracie can't do this, and Gracie says of course she can and will if that bastardo Alejandro doesn't leave.  If he's not going to rot in a coma, then he can rot in jail.  Josefina assures Gracie that Alejandro knows he has lost Montsesrrat and realizes that the best thing for her and Lauro is to think that he's dead.  Still Graciela needs to accept that Alejandro wants to talk to his own mother.  Gracie wonders sarcastically why Rosario needs Alejandro when for years she's had all the love of Graciela's own daughter.

Having had enough of the argument with Graciela, Josefina stands her ground and says again that it's urgent that she talk with Doña Rosario and that she's going to wait until she returns.  Josefina adds that if her presence bothers Gracie that much, she can just drink her coffee in another part of the house.  Regardless, Josefina isn't leaving until she talks with Alejandro's mother.

"Fenómena!"  Gracie calls after Josefina as she turns away and head back into the house, ignoring Gracie's protests.

Meanwhile (No Surprise) Pedro Medina Keeps Up the Emotional Abuse

Mansion Pedro:  As a way to welcome Nadia home again, Pedro takes a moment to remind her that she could lose all the privileges she's earned any moment if she tries something fishy again.  He wants her to be clear about all the obligations she has a wife and mother. Nadia promises that she won't betray him again, and he says great because if she does--

Here, Nadia interrupts him and says she knows that if she does he would kill her.

No, insists Pedro, not that--what good would killing her do?  Instead he tells her he would imprison her forever somewhere and would also take away Victoria and Nadia would never see Victoria or know anything about her daughter ever again.  What's more, Victoria herself would think that Nadia had abandoned her forever.  He asks again if Nadia is clear about what will happen if she betrays him.  Nadia assures him she is and says the constant reminders of the awful fate that would await her should she fail aren't necessary.

Satisfied, Pedro calls for Victoria to come and see who he's brought her.  Victoria comes running, excited to see her mother, and Pedro asks if she's happy with the surprise, to which she answers yes.

"Yes and what?"  asks Pedro
"Yes, Papá," replies Victoria dutifully.

Adolfo also approaches Nadia from the garden.  Not realizing Nadia can't see him, Adolfo asks if Nadia has a hug for him, too, and she cries, "Brother!" and reaches for him, as he understands immediately that she is blind.  Clearly emotional, Adolfo goes to Nadia, and Pedro comments cruelly that he forgot to tell Adolfo about Nadia's condition since he (Pedro) isn't used to the fact that his wife is blind, either.  He says he'd love to stay and watch the happy family reunion, but he's got to go to work.  He orders Victoria to give him a kiss goodbye and as she does she thanks him very much for bringing her mother.

"Muchas gracias y qué?" asks Pedro.
"Papá," says Victoria a second time.

Pedro tells Adolfo to watch over this family as he departs.  Adolfo agrees, but is very upset about what is happening, and when Pedro is finally gone, Adolfo weeps openly, reaching out to embrace Nadia with love as little Victoria clings to both of them.

Painful Memories # 2

The Morning After In Miami:  Montse remembers the day she learned Alejandro was dead.  She was in the hospital recovering from her gunshot wound when DIM came and told her and Rosario about the plane crash.  Both Montse and Rosario cried out in pain and disbelief.

Back in the present moment, Montserrat is interrupted from her reverie by the arrival of J-L and Lauro who've returned from their morning errands.  J-L has rented a car and bought tickets and they're all going to a an amusement park to have some fun.  Lauro is excited and ready to go.  Montse puts on her game face and agrees, yes, they should go and take advantage of the day.

Painful Memories # 3

Back in Agua Azul, Alejandro is also brooding about the past.  He remembers talking to Montse in front of their beautiful beach house on the day of Angélica's funeral, asking her to promise never to see J-L again.  Alejandro could tell that in every look and gesture of J-L, it was clear he still desired Montse and that now that J-L was free, Alejandro knew that one day J-L would come to look for Montse again.  Montse said she was with Alejandro now, and vowed that she had no intention of seeing J-L ever again--what's more she couldn't since J-L was going to jail.  But Alejandro knew from experience that sitting in a cell for a long time changes a man's priorities (but wouldn't it just be the the same priority as always for J-L?) and that when J-L got out, he would want to be with Montse again.  Montserrat assured Alejandro again and again that he had nothing to worry about.  But Alejandro said he wanted J-L out of their lives permanently and Montserrat promised again that this would be so.  They kissed.

Back in the present moment in Agua Azul, Alejandro realizes his worst fears about J-L and Montse were completely justified.

Coffee Talk, Agua Azul

Montserrat's House:  Gracie, Monica, and Josefina share some coffee and unquality time together.  Gracie gloats in front of Josefina and praises Monica to her face in order to try to make Josefina feel inadequate.  Gracie vows she's never seen her bebé so in love and wants to be friends with Monica who is so beautiful and confident--exactly what Gracie always wanted for DIM.  Josefina looks on but seems mostly amused at Gracie's show, or at least not overly affected.

Monica, though, to her credit is NOT falling for Gracie's display of favoritism and asks Gracie that they hold off their conversation until another time.  Right now, it's making her uncomfortable.   Gracie wants to know why and comments that it must be because Josefina is with them.  Monica says she thinks it's better if she leaves, but Josefina steps in and tells Monica to please not worry on her (Josefina's) behalf.  When Rosario comes, she (Josefina) will leave.  Both Graciela and Josefina say out loud that they hope this won't be long.

Gracie declares she wants to take advantage of the fact that Josefina is around to ask what the heck she did to herself while she was away for so long because she looks much better--almost pretty, in fact.  In the past, Josefina was so ugly and insipid, and Gracie speculates that Josefina must have been using her money well going to clinics and spas.

Before Josefina can offer any response, DIM walks in.

End of Episode

Avances:  Rosario and Montserrat argue about whether Alejandro is alive or dead with Rosario insisting he is still alive, but this looked like an old scene from a previous episode.  In the new scene, Rosario realizes she was right all along and finally sees her son Alejandro again.

Thank you for the recap. Perfect title!

Alejandro is terrible. He hasn't changed one bit. Come on, writers, you need to stop making me hate him. He's just awful. I can't root for him.

The conversation between Carlota and Dimitrio was so funny. He teases her about her sex life and at the end tells her that she doesn't shut her mouth with Ezequiel, then adds "to talk".

Julia R:

Thank so very much for this splendid recap and all the detail and Spanish phrases! Loved your title too.

I too can't root for Ale. He's the same old, same old he's always been. I can understand why he feels the way he does, but he has no earthly idea what Monse has been through or JL for that matter, lo these seven years past. He still hasn't dealt with the time issue.

I really loved that convo that Tia and Dimi had and she was also giving him a foot massage, how very funny.

Also loved the reunion with Vicky, Nadia and Adolfo. Adolfo really does love Nadia and Vicky. I'm glad he will be watching over them.

I also thought the consummation, if there was one, was very realistic. Seven years of not doing anything would be very awkward. The writers were spot on there, I have to say.

Oh, and kudos to Fina for not backing down. I hope that La Capitana remembers this little spiel of Graceless and doesn't trust Graceless or believe anything she says. La Capitana was very disgusted with Graceless going on and on about how ugly Fina used to be. I wanted to slap Graceless into next year. May her anvil be huge.

About Dimi and the not wanting to talk to women. I think it really has to do with baring his soul to Fina and being dumped. He is gun shy and doesn't want to let any woman in.

Thanks again Julia R for this most fabulous recap : )

Thanks for another impeccably detailed and sagacious recap, Julia R.

Although I felt some sadness for our broken Alejandro, I also feel some irritation that we'll be dealing with triangle trauma for many more episodes. By now, I don't care much which one ends up with Montse.

Montse shouldn't wear those shoes that could double as murder weapons on the plane. She only needs those in Aguazul, when she's surrounded by dangerous characters.

Fofito will need to man up in order to aid his helpless sister. His opportunity for both revenge and redemption.

Standing and cheering as Josefina refused to back down for Gracie. The lovely Monica was getting just a glimmer of Gracie's bedrock personality.

Dimi was most amusing with his Tia Carlota. I agree with Madelaine that he's gun shy about being open with women. He broke down with Fina, opened his heart and declared his love publicly, only to see her wave good-bye. He's burned badly and doesn't want to risk it again.

Thank you, Julia R., for such a wonderful recap to read this a.m.

It was so good to see Josefina finally try to take control by forcing herself into the house and telling Graciela she was not leaving until she saw Rosario.

Poor Monica has no idea of whom she is dealing with in the case of Graciela. She is so out of her depth. I was happy that Dimitri walked in on the little threesome at the end.

Let's see if Adolfo will be instrumental in saving Nadia and Victoria from Pedro's "happy" family.

Jarifa

Rushing off to work this morning but couldn't resist the recap. So well=crafted. Thank you Julia.

"Montserrat's House: Gracie, Monica, and Josefina share some coffee and unquality time together."

Love that "unquality time"! Pretty much covers any time spent with Graciela!

Thanks for catching me up on the nefarious doings in Agua Azul and beyond. I see that Men Behaving Badly continues.

In Dim's defense, I've got to say in general, men do not like extended discussions of their feelings. I remember a funny quote in a marriage manual once that said women feel a marriage is going well if "they can talk about it". Men feel it's going well if "they don't have to talk about it".
So Dim has got some blood brothers on his side!

Excellent work, Julia.

I'm bucking the tide here and feeling for Alejandro. He's still dealing with the notion of losing seven years of his life. He really should see a shrink about that even if he didn't have these ginormous problems and crises. He needs to calm down or he will screw up.

As to realizing that Gracie has lied to him, I think he's beginning to. He is suspicious of the idea of Monse being pregnant. He can certainly confirm with Rosario that nothing happened to make that happen.

It's unfortunate that Monse didn't disclose all the details of what happened with Fabiola and the fake death threats. While I can understand her not wanting to deal with it at that moment she certainly knows the significance of Gracie's forced disclosure.

Julia, thank you for your detailed recap, wonderful descriptions of the dialogue.
Very accurate images, too, i.e., Monse's "game face".
Ugh, will that woman ever get a clue and stop trying to please everyone all the time forever and ever? At least she seems wise to her mom. I hope.

Monica seems like the only normal undamaged human on the show. I do hope she has gotten enough of a load of Graciela (after that morning of listening to her talk) to stop urging Dim to bond with her.
I don't blame Dim for not going into details yet. How do you explain to your girlfriend that your evil snake of a mother keeps selling her kids to rich mates to get money and couldn't tell the truth if someone printed it on a poster and made her read it out loud??

Some great palabras! "El Perdedor" -um, does that mean "The Big Loser"?
grosero-? Is that "Gross One"?

These people need to learn to keep secrets and be more stealthy. Really, Fina telling Graciela why she needs to talk to Rosario.
If she had a brain in her head she'd go to the back door and ask the help where Rosario is and then ask which market Rosario goes to and just go and try to find her.

I'm sorry, I'm still in the middle of reading the recap, but I just got to the point when Ale and Victor were comparing their situations. Is Ale really trying to equate JL being on honeymoon with Monse and possibly boinking her, with Pedro keeping Nadia prisoner and possibly beating her? I'm with Victor on this one. He wins the right to be anxious about his woman (AND child) prize in this round.

I'm running out the door, but wanted to say thanks for this great recap, Julia! More later when I'm back at a computer.

Julia, a full bodied, fragrant, delicious recap. Your detail is incredible and your writing - flawless.

"..what seems an inexhaustible supply of sports coats he is always sporting" and "Setting the Stage for a Second Duel on the Playa, Perhaps?" were among my favorites. Your captions? One was better than the next.

Agree with Anon and Madelaine that I cannot support Ale. Unfortunately, I agree that he hasn't changed one iota. "Let him kill me," cries Alejandro. "Or I can kill him!". And there you have it.

Nadia is riveting. Her pain is palpable and the actress is amazing.

But the scene that made me cry last night was Adolfo. "Adolfo weeps openly, reaching out to embrace Nadia with love as little Victoria clings to both of them." Heartbreaking. Pedro has decimated that entire family.

I know Adolfo is a murderer. Am I just plain wrong in that I want him to be redeemed??

Monica is asking for a lot, much more than Dim is willing to give at the moment. I think she wants to move too quickly. Just because she is "all in" in such short order, doesn't mean he is. At least for now.

Fina held her own with Graciela. And gracefully.

Monse is clearly not in love with JL (to me at least). I think she holds him in great affection. What will that deteriorate to once she realizes his deception?

Wonderful Julia.

Diana

I agree that Monse is not in love with JL. That was obvious in her facial expressions in the honeymoon suite, both before and after. When she finds out he deceived her she will be livid, maybe more so than she was with Gracie.

We need to ask ourselves whom Adolfo has killed over the last 7 years. Has he only killed drug dealers and other scum? Is that the dividing line between true evil and redemptability? We're still wondering the same things about EZ.

The fact that many of the characters in this story tread the fine line of moral ambiguity makes us tune in to this night after night.

Love this recap Julia! Got a chuckle out of your section headers. Got a bit messed up with the viewing here with some delay on all the Uni shows, but did get most of all after the rolling in the honeymoon hay scene. Actually rather grateful for that.

So the whole he-man thing continues with Ale threatening a do or die scenario--AGAIN? And I'm sure JL will start the same thing when he sees Ale back. All we need is animal skins and clubs with these two. Cripes.

My guesses is that Monse may have been okay with going through with the full honeymoon, but that it isn't emotionally the same as she had with Ale. Cue her return to the Big Gorilla without batting an eye as soon as she knows he's alive.

Can I also add I was totally on board with Dim not wanting to be so "open" with Monica. I'm not a person who feels the need to open up past deep hurts or regrets with most anyone. With what he has gone thru and how he has come out so well, it most likely is part of his being able to move forward: the need and desire to not have to relive all that again. Monica is not getting his memo. Who knows, maybe at some point he would have been more open, but her pushing most likely just shut the door.

Pedro does know that Adolfo is the Scorpion correct? Or at least is a known enforcer? Adolfo may not have had much to live for, but he does now. Pedro must think that he can use N/V to threaten Adolfo, but I think it is going to work in the opposite manner. This is Adolfo's straw breaking the camel's back to get revenge for his sister. That scene was heartbreaking.

And cue the Kleenex for tonight's mom hugs.

Daisynjay

I don't blame Dimitrio for that. He's been through too much and why would he want to talk about his mother from hell until he has to? At least now Monica has seen what Gracie is all about.

Whether Pedro knows that Adolfo is The Scorpion or not, he set him on that path. It looks like it will be up to Adolfo to take him out.

Peddy knows that Adolfo is the Scorpion. Peddy was the one that sent him up North to oversee his operations there. Yes, Adolfo has only killed scum so far. He hasn't killed anyone that was innocent, shall we say.

Wonderful recap!!

The more of Monica I see the more I like her. She has a really good moral center and a lot of strength too. I am starting to wonder whether I really want Fina and Dim back together again.

So the writers have turned JL's character like Ale, and Ale is still his jealous, controlling self. I was always in JL's corner but now they are both treating her like a prize pig. She needs to have an "I choose me" moment and leave both of them.

Fina has changed. Before those comments from Graciela would have her hanging her head. Good to see she's got enough self esteem just to laugh it off.

I wish Adolfo would just kill Pedro now. Just end this misery of a story line.

Hi Everyone, Thanks so much for all the amazing and detailed comments! I've got some time this morning, so would love to reply back to you all. For those who comment later, I may not be able to get back to each of you, but please now I will read and be grateful for the time you took to write.

Anonymous 12:08: Thanks so much for reading so early and glad you liked the title

Mads: You're always an early commenter, too, and I really appreciate it. ITA that the sex scene between Montse and J-L was very realistic and very well done. It wasn't steamy and sexy, but it was moving to me, and I appreciated the way it showed two wounded people try to be together with respect and understanding.

La Paloma: Thank you so much. I was thrilled to be called sagacious!

Jarifa: I always look forward to your early morning comments, too! I was also happy to see that Josefina is finally standing up to Graciela and in a way that's natural to her character.

Judy B. You always comment early, too, and give me much pleasure with your praise and insights. Maybe Monica was pressing DIM too much and too soon. As he himself said, it was an exhausting day and he was tired. Maybe just being together was enough.

Urban Anthropologist: Thanks, as always, for your early morning comments and praise. It means a lot to me since I always enjoy your recaps so much. I also enjoyed your point about how the moral ambiguity of the characters in this TN keeps us coming back.

Emarie: Thanks so much for your kind words and thoughtful comments. And I should have translated those phrases/word, which I will now:

Grosero/a: a crude or vulgar man/woman

El Perdedor: The Loser. This is actually also the title of the song that plays during the opening credits.

And while I'm at it the refrain in the song is what I referred to in the title of the recap "No me queda nada más" which translates as "Nothing is left to me" or maybe more idiomatically "I have nothing left."

Vivi in DC: Thanks so much for reading before you left for work. I do feel bad for Alejandro, but I agree with you that his feeling that Montse and his own son being with a good man they both love is somehow worse than Nadia and Victoria being with a man they both hate and who is an abuser crazy.

Diana: Your praise is always so detailed and thoughtful--thank you! ITA with you that I really want Adolfo to be redeemed. I also want HIM to get Josefina in the end. I have always really liked him, too, in sprite of his flaws. He is probably my favorite character on the show.

Daisynjay: So happy I made you laugh and thanks so much for your praise and smart comments. The whole he-man thing with Alejandro starting again is annoying--maybe he'll get beyond it by the end and have some growth.

Carvivlie: Thanks so much for reading. I really like Monica, too. I agree that I want DIM with Monica-and, as I said, Josefina with a fully redeemed Adolfo.

I hope I got everyone--forgive me if I missed you! And thanks to all!
Best,
Julia R

Dear Julia Rold,

Thank you so much for this exquisitely written and thorough recap (with just enough mischief to assure us your sense of fun is nicely intact). I especially enjoyed your subheads, my favorite being this one:

DIM Does The Seemingly Impossible and Actually Gives Carlotta TMI

Going on 40 nephew + aunt who has been like his mother to him + graphic double entendres = eeewwwww!

P.S. Emarie, grosero means rude or vulgar. It can be used as an adjective to describe a person or thing; or it can be used as a noun and mean 'a rude or vulgar person.' (Grosería is a noun that means rudeness or vulgar behavior, or a rude remark.)

Perdedor means simply 'loser,' from the verb, to lose: perder.

A review of the comments leads me to the surprising conclusion that Urban Anthropologist are in agreement about something. No, seriously.

I am also feeling sympathy for Alejandro right now. Lo siento. I find myself swept up by the central fairytale. I want to see the golden family reunited. I want steadfast Rosario to have her boy back. I want Penelope to know that Odysseus has come home and she has allowed one of the suitors to deceive her.

I so despise José Luis for his recent behavior. I doubt that even Angélica would approve of what he has been doing.

Julia, I think the issue about Victor's problem vs. Alejandro's is that there is no ambiguity about what they need to do about Nadia and Victoria: They need to rescue them because Pedro is a monster. We don't know whether Victor every told Alejandro about Pedro's shortcomings but he obviously knows that this was the proximate cause of Pedro's cruelty toward Nadia. And his motive for kidnapping Victoria and luring her back. They need a plan for rescuing Nadia and Victoria.

Alejandro's problem is bigger because JL is not evil, not a criminal (in the greater sense), and basically a decent person. There was a good-faith belief that Alejandro was dead. The right and logical thing to do would be to have Monserrat choose between them. Laurito should be left out of that until she makes that choice.

The big irony in all this is that JL needs to help rescue Nadia and Victoria. He may exact a high price for that assistance. If he does that he's stepped over the line because Nadia and Victoria's safety can't be compromised for any reason.

Julia- Glad I'm not the only one who thought that comparison Ale made was crazy. I'm surprised Victor didn't lose his sh*t and go off on Ale. He's a way better person than I am. :)

Novela Maven- Sure. I want Ale and Monse to get back together, but only because that will make her happy. Both JL and Ale have deceived her for their own convenience at various points, so in my mind that only thing that should make Ale win out over JL is the simple fact that Monse is in love with Ale (vs loving/caring for JL).

In the real world, if Monse were my friend, I would tell her to dump both these possessive losers. And if for some strange reason she HAD to choose between the two (because being alone or finding a better man isn't an option), I would tell her to go with the one who didn't rape her.

That scene with Nadia was hearthbreaking and i got ill in stomach when he said "I am sad to interrupt the happy family reunion but he has to go to work" Yuck, like that wise woman Gracie said a few nights ago,he really has no limits,he is even worse then Fevier or Dionisio.

The scene with Gracie,Monica,Dim and Josefa was quite interesting.. I really hope JL does not make Monse pregnant. And when Maria returns ,she will most likely cause even more issues and complicate the things even more, unless she somehow magically forgets about Ale and prefundamente falls in love with Adolfo but thats just wishful thinking, I wonder how Addie will introduce Maria to Vicky when he marries her. Will he tell her she is her aunt but also been the whore of Uncle Ale? Most likely not!

Urban- I see what you're saying but I still don't buy it. The solution with Monse is simple. Ale just needs to reveal that he is alive to her. If she still loves him, she'll dump JL. If she chooses to stay with JL, then he moves on. It's not the end of the world. None of their lives are in danger. Sure, some hearts will get broken, but that's life.

With Nadia, Vicky and Victor, there are lives in danger. He has no idea what kind of mental and/or physical abuse Pedro is and will use against them. There is no comparison to Ale wondering if Monse and JL are having sex.

Vivi, once again, you have cut to the heart of the matter: "In the real world, if Monse were my friend, I would tell her to dump both these possessive losers. And if for some strange reason she HAD to choose between the two (because being alone or finding a better man isn't an option), I would tell her to go with the one who didn't rape her."

Very well stated.

Diana

Vivi:

I am so with you too, about not going with the one that raped her. You are so wise, Amiga.

I'm not just bothered by Ale's rage, I'm bothered that he completely talked about Montse like an object. I'm bothered that he seems more interested in getting her back because of revenge and not because he loves her. He even had the nerve to say that she fell in love with JL again, assuming she ever stopped loving him. It's just never enough for him. There is no amount of reassurance that can satisfy his incredible insecurity. When I was growing up I watched a cartoon called Recess. The kids in kindergarten were sometimes depicted as fighting over toys, and I always remember a fake depiction with two kids tugging a doll back and for while yelling "MY TOY!". That's what I think of at this point when I hear Ale and JL talk about Montse. Except Ale is much, much worse.

But yes, I am really loving Nadia. I didn't care much for her, but her acting has been so good lately. And Adolfo turns my heart into marshmallow, to use a quote from yesterday's recap.

I have to agree to liking Monica, but I do think she was out of line wanting Dimi to bare his soul to her so soon. She needs to be patient.
But it's true I am finding myself rooting less and less for Fina and Dim because I think Dim and Monica are a good fit.
And I know it'll never happen, but I'd like a redeemed Adolfo and Fina.

Adolfo and Fina is conflicted too because of Maria/Diana i dont see Addie and Fina together in the end but then again what isnt conflicting in this telenovela, thats one of the reason i love it! Monica-Dim- Maria-Adolfo- Fina love orchester is quite nice, although not yet properly established but once it is it will go haywire! And im waiting for Monica to meet the real Gracie, because of her position,i thought she was more adept at sensing witches! She needs to give Dim a break because she does not know who Graciela Giacintti "The Satan in High Heels" really is.

I like that Fina isn't spending/wasting time thinking about what could have been with Dim. She made the choice that was right for her at the time- no need for regrets and beating herself up about the past like most the these characters do. If she and Dim find their way back together, then it will be in a very organic and real way. If they don't, then Fina has proven herself to be quite capable to riding off into the sunset with herself, and being happy with that. Some of the other women in this tn should take note. She and Adolfo will never be, because as soon as she were to find out that he killed people (even scum) and was a drug cartel enforcer, it would be all over. She has a very strong moral code.

Novella maven and Julia- I'm so happy to see I'm getting better with me Spanish and wasn't too far off on my translation, thank you both for clarifying.
When I was growing up we called someone "gross" when they were rude or crude,...

Notice how many times Graciela called Fina "la fenómena", as in freak? Then she said she must have been to a lot of spas over the past 7 years to look halfway presentable.

Instead of just laughing it off Fina should take the next step and knock the smirk right off of Graciela's seven-layer face.

Julia, Terrific recap.
I had missed some things. Thanks for clarifying everything. Looking forward to a reconciliation between Dim & Fina. The writer make this character very real, witty and likeable ...and besides, I think he is cute.

Enjoy all comments.

Nice work, Julia! this time of year must e so busy for you and I really appreciate the detail that you put into this fine work.

Hi to all my good friends on the Patio and in the Bunker. I miss all of you and look forward to coming out for a beverage and a chat.

Moving Day is May 28th. Thanks again for all the kind wishes and good vibes. I won't be able to comment today but I will post a short recap and a place for comments this evening.

Thanks again to Mads, Urban Anthropologist, Gloria, Novela Maven, Eli, Julia Rold, this fine recapping team for all of your support.

Julia R - Great recap. Loved the headings, especially Aye, aye, Captain--not! Thanks for andar con pies de plomo.

I give Ale a plus for being understanding with Fina about her not telling Monse he was in a coma.

So the triangle has reversed. The biggest difference now to me is that there's a young boy involved. Something Ale must’ve momentarily forgotten when he said he’d get Monse back even if it killed him. Poor Victor, in anguish himself, having to listen to estupideces from his BFF.

Hmmm, JL and Monse are in Miami. Might they run into Sandro? Hoping for more Scooby and less triangle.

Am i just me or i really want to say someone "Te Hase Falta Jesus,Perdonate" in their face:) We should call this holiday,Gracies day, everyone gets to be a Graciela for a day! I love Daniella Castro by the way:)

Julia thanks so much for your wonderful recap.

I am disappointed but not surprised that Ale has not changed. At least I can look forward to his reunion w/Rosie.

I side with Ale against JL. Why? Well granted that the majority of viewers are trying to place an 'objective' yardstick on his intentions and feelings toward Monse and JL, the old adage "Vox populi, vox Dei" just doesn't cut it. The reason I side with Ale is in support of Monse's feelings for him. Can anyone deny that if it came to choosing between the two of them, she would rush to Ale's side? So no matter how thuggish his behavior is toward JL, she WANTS Ale, bad attitude and all. And I suspect she will get what she wants.

Anon- I think all of us will agree with you that 1) Monse wants Ale, not JL, and 2) Ale and Monse are end game- he IS the main galan after all. (See one of my comments above.) But that doesn't mean I need to like either one of her galan choices (since they are both bad choices and Ale is the worst of the two), even the one she wants. But, as in real life, people often make bad choices about their mates, and fictional Monse is no better. :)

Vivi, those are my feelings. Yes, I want Montse to know he is alive, but he is a terrible galan. To me SR has never looked better than in this novela, but the writers have made him extremely unappealing as Alejandro. I don't mind a complicated galan, but this goes beyond, where I basically can't find anything good to say about him except that he's good-looking.

Anon- SR does look super fine in this tn. I like him in those smedium blue shirts and well-fitted jeans. But I also liked his look as professor hottie in those tailored suits in Teresa. :)

Thanks for another crisp, clearly written and fully detailed recaps, Julia. Well done.

The actress portraying Monica did such a good job at silently conveying her shock, horror, and discomfort with Graciela's cutting remarks about Josefina. I think she now has a much better understanding of Dimitrio's tenuous relationship with his mom. She so looked like she was looking for an escape hatch. I'm sure she's looking forward to paling around with Gracie.

I don't know which scene was more touching, Victor describing their new daughter to his blind wife, Nadia, or Nadia's reunion with her brother Adolfo. I fought back tears with both.

I just can't picture Adolfo's redemption, we've seen him blow away two guys and worse, he set up Padre Anselmo murder at the hands of Zeke and he pulled the trigger on the pistol pointed at María's head with the intention of killing her. Of course JL and Refugio have also shot folks and gotten passes.

Carlos

Carlos, I agree. Just watched this on Hulu and you could see Monica's increasing horror and the light dawning on why Dimitrio was so distant with his mamita. Graciela really revealed herself in all her cruel taunts about Josefina. First time I've seen our wicked mama fail to realize what's at stake and handle it intelligently (albeit malevolently). She got hung up on her own petard this time...and how! Monica has to be giving serious thought as to what kind of suegra she would be.

Julia,
Once again you have outdone yourself. Thank you for this beautifully written recap. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

You guys know that I side with Ale. I have been a loyal member at his table from the beginning. I am not changing teams. I feel sad for Ale. The tables have turned and he is in pain. I know that he will eventually reveal himself to Montse, but the writers are sure taking their sweet time. At least he will have a reunion with Rosario tonight, according to the avances. There is no doubt in my mind that Montse will want Ale once they are reunited. And JL knows this as well. I can't wait to see JL's reaction when he SEES Ale up and walking around. But I am anxiously awaiting the reunion between Ale and Montse. There is going to be more heart-pounding, emotionally-charged, energized tension during that reunion than there was during last nights "love scene". I am soooooo looking forward to that.

Speaking of love scene, it was more like bla scene. Sorry, but I just don't feel any chemistry between the newlyweds. And Montse seemed to be going through the motions. When she stopped and turned away (when they were in bed, under the sheets), it was more than nerves. She was maybe trying to think of an excuse? Who knows? JL needs to get a clue. He is the one always saying "te amo". Montse never responds with a "yo te amo tambien". JL is trying to hang on to a past love that, according to Angie, was doomed to fail. I agree with those who are tired of Montse pleasing everyone. I hope when she sees Ale, she runs to him and gives him a big 'ol kiss. Because everyone knows that's what she's going to WANT. Who wouldn't want some lovin' from that sexy, blue-shirted hunk!

Very emotional scene between Adolfo, Nadia and Vicky. You could see Adolfo's true feelings. He really loves his sister and niece. I just hope that Adolfo doesn't get killed in his efforts to help Nadia, Vicky and Vic. I have always had a soft spot for Adolfito.

Get the tissues ready. Rosario's reuniting with her hijo tonight. Should be a good one.

Back to work...hasta pronto!

The thing with Gracie and her lack of limits is her sense of entitlement. She feels entitled to mouth off at or about anyone -- including her own children. I can't remember a single thing she's ever said to either of them that hasn't been insulting in some way.

I also saw the growing horror on Monica's face during Gracie's barrage of insults. The day Gracie's real background is revealed to everyone else will be sweet. However, I think it's wait until the Ultimas Semanas.

Julia Rold, once again you have outdone yourself. Loved your recap, especially the way you described the scene with Nadia, Adolfo and Victoria. I got mushy all over again. I really feel bad for these characters. As Diana stated, Pedro decimated that family, and although he is now engulfed in the drug world, I do hope for some redemption for Adolfo as well.

Have to say, I'm so glad that Fina is holding her ground with Graciela, now that she knows she was tricked. Looking forward to tonight when Dimi arrives home to find his witch mom, Fina and Monica together. I'm hoping he heard the way his mom was insulting Fina too.

Aunty Ann, I guess we are in the few but you couldn't have said it any better. I'm also feeling bad for Ale and hope they don't drag his meet up with Montse too long. She's meant to be with Ale because he is her true love, and although I didn't use to dislike JL, his keeping quiet and pushing Montse to move up the wedding using Laurito as an excuse so that he could go on their honeymoon was not right. It will come back to bite him when Montse learns the truth. She can expect these kinds of deceptions from her mom, but not JL who she considers noble and good.

Maricruz

Now that Monse and JL have had a church wedding and have consummated it, the story will now permit Monserrat to know Ale is alive and well, and even see him so there can be plenty of angst all around, if this story goes the way they generally do.
I hope Monica can be healing for Dim, and help him put a bandaid on that Madre-ectomy incision he has gaping open.

Maricruz,
ITA with your comments on JL. I never really hated the guy, he was just annoying. But now I don't like him. He is deceiving Montse, and using Laurito.

I am curious to see if they will do a time jump for the honeymoon trip. Lo siento, but I don't want to watch JL, Montse and Laurito on vaca for the next week. I hope they get back to Aguazul soon.

Does somebody know wht song is that one when josefina dreams adolfo after dead when tells her olvidame
