Qué Pobres, Lunes 5/26/14 (#100): A Sea of Porca Miseria

Wowie wow wow. Hold onto your sombreros!

Ana Sofia takes one look at the decorations (balloons) for the wedding and complains that they are a monument to poor taste. (It takes one to know one!) That and more verbal abuse from AS induces Lupe to quit "Until you apologize."

Miguel Angel happens by and tries to get his mother to apologize. Even Leo, unsure as he is about this wedding, begs her to make nice. AS says it is humiliating, but she will do it for her children: she averts her eyes, gazes skyward, and utters a feeble "Sorry."

Over MA's protests ("Apologize to Lupe, not to the birds, air, and trees!"), Lupe accepts the weak gesture of contrition but reminds AS to respect the rest of the Menchacas as well.

Carmela leaves Emiliano at Paco's house and tells Paco's mother that Lupe will come for him this evening.

Mini and Isela prepare to crash the wedding.

AS tries to get Perla to lose the flower in her hair, but Lupe intervenes. The flower can stay! Perla offers to get one for AS. (Declined!) Later, AS bad-mouths the indoor decorations with Leo when the Menchacas approach... she quickly changes her tune, says everything looks great, and even thanks them. (Briefly.)

Confidentially, Leo asks the Menchacas of the decorations: "I have just one question: Why the Styrofoam?"

MA asks AS to take good care of his hermanos in Spain. He is surprised that she wasn't planning on taking Granny Mati with. AS says it's too much trouble to get her a passport and all of that. MA says he's already checked Mati's big handbag, and she has everything she needs! AS reluctantly agrees to take Mati to Spain.

MA and AS say goodbye very awkwardly, with no hugs or touching.

At Paco's house, Emi brags that his dad's TV is twice as big as Paco's, and they have 3D glasses and a roomful of toys, blah blah blah. Paco thinks Emi is making it up, but Emi will call his papa and prove it!

AS and Leo greet the arriving guests. Leo confides to his mother that he still isn't sure about this. AS tells him not to be "selfish." Leo gets more uncomfortable by the minute.

Vilma tries to sympathize with Alejo about his troubles with Lupita and the kid, but in true Ahole fashion he says his patience is about to run out - and he means his patience with Vilma for not hurrying up with his divorce.

Just then, Emi calls. Ahole shoos Vilma out. Emi wants Papa to tell Paco that it's true about the pricey toys. Ahole has an even better idea: they'll go to the shoe store. And if Paco's mom won't agree to let him go? Ahole suggests a father-and-son prank.

Back at the hacienda, Leo bursts into Maca's room. Sensing disaster, Count Mom tries to get rid of him, saying it's bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding. Leo shuts her down with an uncharacteristally cold look and says he needs to speak to Maca NOW, ALONE.

Oh yeah, here it comes!

"I have to tell you something before this wedding. It may change your mind. Maca, I am, I think I am, that is, sometimes I feel... Maca, I AM GAY. Or... well, I dunno if I'm gay or not. It's like, to be gay or not to be gay, that is the question, yes. I'm super-mega-confused, not sure of anything."

Maca replies, "Oh, good. I was afraid it was something serious, like you had a fatal disease and your days were numbered, or that you were RUINED, or something like that! No, I'm 'la mar' de liberal. Some of my best friends are gay!"

Leo tries to get her to understand that it would be unfair, it would be a lie, a betrayal... is he talking about her? No, he's talking about denying his true nature. But Maca is upbeat and stubborn. She declares that this will be the happiest day of their lives.

Outside Maca's room, Count Mom threatens AS that if this wedding doesn't happen, there will be another Spanish-Mexican war. But Maca and Leo emerge from the room, ready to make some wedding bells ring.

Carmelita calls Lupe to confirm that she dropped Emiliano off at Paco's house. She also promises not to leave the Menchaca house until they come home tonight (maybe because last time Carm left the house prematurely, AS set fire to the kitchen).

Outside, Leo waits at the altar as Maca approaches. He mutters things like "money" and "Spanish omelets" to keep his motivation up.

While the ceremony proceeds outside, Chabelita returns home from Paris, looks around the banquet hall, and complains that these green curtains are too old. She orders her staff to put up the new curtains she brought back from France. She wants the place to look nice for the photos that will be in all the magazines!

She catches a glimpse of MA skulking around; he's having some trouble getting away because there are people everywhere. But when she looks again and calls his name, he's gone.

Tizoc's band plays "Ave Maria," and everyone is enchanted. Then they switch up the tempo and continue with a more tropical version of the song. Everyone, even the bishop and the non-Counts, seems to like it except for AS and maybe Leo although it's harder to read his reaction given how confused he is. MA takes advantage of the diversion to sneak away from Chabelita, but he's not out of the woods yet.

OK, so now the marrying part of the wedding. Leo puts some coins in Maca's hand. (She should take a picture of this final investment from the RPs; it'll last longer.) The lasso weighs on him like a three-ton chain of poison ivy. He has trouble with the rings.

But none of that matters, because it still counts. So to speak. "You can kiss the bride," the bishop says. "I am a Ruizpalacio," Maca sighs. "And I am a Condesuki!" Leo replies. He gives her the slightest peck on the mouth, and with that, it's a done deal.

Mini and Isela arrive just as the ceremony is ending. Big surprise - they're not on the list. Chabelita's bouncer is immune to Mini's charms and Isela's threats ("Do we look like criminals? Dinamiteras?"). The day is saved when Tato shows up with an invitation from some relative who couldn't attend. Mini volunteers herself as his plus-one.

Guess what color Chabela's new French curtains are? Guess!! I'll give you a hint. WHAT COLOR IS ANA SOFIA'S DRESS WHICH WAS MADE OUT OF CURTAINS FROM FRANCE??

The wedding reception is underway. Chabelita and Genoveva (Kiki) make fools of themselves in front of the Counts. Chabela nearly loses her balance while curtsying too low, and Count Mom makes Kiki lean waaaaay low to kiss her hand/ring. Then Sharky the loan shark shows up and tells a displeased AS that he's playing the role of eccentric millionaire.

AS dances an awkward waltz with Count Dad, trying to maintain a dignified distance and avoiding eye contact.

In the busy kitchen, Perla seems a little wobbly, but nobody notices amid all the commotion.

Mini calls Tato "Teto," but he is more interested in watching Frida gape at him and Minerva.

Perla is serving food to the guests and seems even giddier than usual: "There ya go! It's mighty tasty!"

Genoveva is commenting with surprise that AS really did invite Mini after all, when Isela drags Mini out of there to scold her for abandoning her at the door. Mini is upset and disappointed that she didn't see MA.

To AS, Isela says, "You didn't invite us, but nobody told us we couldn't come! And what a nice dress. Such unusual fabric!" AS tells her to stay, enjoy, and die of envy!

There is a lot of eye-contact drama with pained looks across the room between Frida and Tizoc, Tizoc and Teto I mean Tato, Frida and Vanessa (I think that's the name of Tizoc's singer), etc. Tato remarks that the wedding is awfully "folksy" and grumbles about Tizoc the "naco." If we're lucky, maybe Tato and Vanessa will elope.

Chabela tells AS she thought she saw MA; AS says Chabela's getting to be the age where senile dementia sets in. Or maybe she's suffering DTs from too much alcohol.

At Paco's house, Emiliano has one eye on the video game and the other on the clock. Suddenly he suggests that they go to the park. Paco says he'll have to ask his mother. "Okay, so ask your mom," Emi says, and as soon as his friend is out of sight, Emi sneaks out of the house! When Paco returns with the good news that they can go, Emi is nowhere to be found.

Chabela comments to the Counts that they seem to be the only "nobles" present. Count Mom says the Duchess of Alba cancelled at the last minute because she didn't feel well; the Queen never travels; but there's a chance that Charles and Camilla will drop in later.

AS is chastizing her friends for standing too close to royalty when Isela swoops in - I believe she's had a bit of champagne - and starts flirting with Count Dad in an inane conversation about spicy Mexican food. Count Mom watches through narrowed eyes.

To break the tension, AS calls Perla for more champagne. Perla drops the tray and falls in a swoon.

MA is still at the hacienda! Lupe brings him some food so he doesn't have to go home on an empty stomach. Hobbling around the lawn with a broken shoe, Mini sees them te-amoing and smooching... and she doesn't like it one bit!

Next Time: The Uncountables loot countless handbags. AS has a tummyache? (Not sure about that one.) Mini grumbles about being replaced by a fry cook. Father and son make their long-awaited visit to the Fancy Boy Shoe Store. MA prepares to confront ahole Alejo.

I'll be off the grid for a couple three days, so I want to comment now.

Wowi is right. The deed is done, thru the Church anyway. I had to laugh at Leo's indecision, then finally marrying Maca and doling out the coins to Maca while trying to take the lasso off his neck, too funny.

I knew that Isela and Mini had not been invited to the wedding and Tato showing up with the invitation and leaving Isela at the gate, also too funny.

Loved Chavella running after the phantom MA.

Also liked the make out session with MA and Lupe, but Mini catching them, not so good.

Also liked the curtains in the reception area matching AS' dress, too funny.

Didn't like Emi running off with Ahole. This can't be good.

Thanks Julie and I'll see Y'all on Thursday ; )

See you Thursday, Mads!

The recap is done.

I will be counting the minutes until 10 o'clock tonight!!

Julie, Thanks for the wonderful recap. I loved the comment:

"The lasso weighs on him like a three-ton chain of poison ivy."

And, I giggled at: "The Uncountables"

Also, so unicel means "styrofoam"! I didn't think to look it up--I wasn't sure what they were talking about and I thought it was an advertisement/product placement for a phone company. LOL!

Typical that Leo tells Maca the truth but mainly because he was worried about being true to himself. I'm not quite sure why he didn't reveal that the family is ruined when Maca gave him the opening. So now what happens? Will the marriage be annulled?

I knew something was up when Chabelita wanted to change the curtains, but I didn't guess the new ones were the same kind that AS's dress had been made from. And, I think when AS is dancing with the UnCount Dad, she was trying to keep her scarf closed and covering her dress, as if that would help!

Minerva sinking down into the wet lawn with her high heels was fun. She must love MA a lot to endure that. LOL!

Barbara

Julie! great recap!
I also loved 'the uncountables' and the scene where Leo gave Maca the 'sarras' one by one... LOL!! usually they have all the sarras in the two closed hands one over the other and the groom opens his hands enough for the sarras to drop on the bride's hands... the one by one gig had me laughing, just like watching Leo fool around witht he lazzo as if it weighed a ton indeed!! too funny!
but my favorite part was watching AS try to cover up her dress with all the guests, especially when Isela came to her and AS was standing right in front of the curtains... talk about a 'wanna get away??' moment...

Julie, thank your for your spirited recap this a.m. My favorite line was "The lasso weighs on him like a three ton chain of poison ivy."

Leonardo stole the show for me from the beginning looking at the wedding decorations and calling them a "monument to bad taste" to trying to get out from under the lasso to the dramatic wedding "peck" at the end of the ceremony.

I think when Maca was talking to Leonardo about being gay: that is it wasn't like a fatal disease or being "ruined", she was talking about financial ruin. That will make it even funnier when she finds out that the Ruizpalacios are broke.

Loved AS's dress matching the drapes and her "Porca miseria. Porca fortuna."

Also loved Isela serving appetizers to the counts and calling them "Covadonga" and "Quique".

Emiliano has sure been turned into a little conniver very quickly. His other missteps have been minor compared to this one.

Should be a good one tonight!

Jarifa

I've fallen behind on this one again, but I HAVE to see this episode! Thanks for the recap, Julie. It's hilarious!!!

So much fun in the last 2 episodes! Thank you for the wonderful recaps Marta and Julie!

I wasn’t expecting Leo to admit to Maca his dilemma - to be gay or not to be gay. LOL
But interesting how he would admit to that but not that his family is now poor.
I loved his pouty face as he was greeting all the guests coming in. Like AS said he looked like he was at a funeral rather than his wedding.

Chabelita bowing down to the fake counts was too funny; I really thought she was going to fall flat on her face at one point.

I’m sure people will notice that AS’s dress is made out of curtain fabric, just one more thing to add to the long list of things to go wrong in this wedding.

I loved it when Perla almost shoved an entire tray of food (no individual table service, i guess LOL!!)at the main wedding table and Leo (who had Maca beside him, I believe) just stared at the tray briefly and then hid his face in his hand like wanting to be very small at that moment.

and yes, Isela had her moment with the 'Uncountables'...

I wonder if Chabela will also 'pass the bill of embarrassment' to AS when the truth spills out and over.

Thank you, Julie! I loved the line about the poison ivy lasso, too. When I was watching it, I was thinking "is that made of barb wire?" from how irritated Leo seemed by it.

Also found it very funny when he slowly counted the coins into her hands one by one, instead of pouring them from his hands like a normal groom would do. It was like he was slowly feeding them into a slot machine he was sure would hit the jackpot.

So they actually went through with the wedding. How long will that last? Another fantastic Ave Maria.

For ONCE, I agreed with AS. Those decorations were tacky. However, since she herself is a thousand times more tacky, I still thought she should shut up about it.

The pool area where MA and Lupita met was so beautiful. It was way prettier than the ballroom where the reception was held, new gold French curtains that the staff installed in record time or not.

I hope the Menchacas collect all their payment from AS/Slicky before it all goes to hell. Looks like that could happen pretty quickly, with the previews of the unaCountables and their wedding shenanigans!

I LOVED LOVED the fact that AS brought the Archbishop!!! to officiate the wedding... (or so she bragged). and he was dancing to the Ave Maria just like everyone else(except Leo and AS that is)... lol!

the Unaccountables definitely came up with their own meaning of 'the wedding crashers'. (double that judging from the previews!!)

The scene of the groom kissing the bride was funny too. First Leo flipping Maca around, then the tiny mini kiss on the lips (shortest wedding kiss I've ever seen)then he was ready to run away without her!

Excellent recap, Julie! There were lots of funny things to recount. I was also surprised that Leo came out to Maca. Of course, since she's marrying him for money, she didn't care. That should have been a red flag for him. I did love that dramatic, but quick and chaste kiss, and the foolishness with the arras and the lasso.

Yes, Leo should have been a little more curious as to why Maca still wanted to marry him after he told her they weren't going to have a normal marriage. I suppose he was too stressed out over his own secrets to wonder about anything else.

So, will this marriage last even one day, or will they decide to split before the honeymoon even starts?

I don't think either side has thought of a honeymoon yet. At least the RPs are ready to move to Spain as soon as the wedding is over.
If there is a honeymoon, it will have to be at La Nopalera!

To be gay, or not to be gay? That is the question.

"It's just like Hamlet said: to thine own self be true."

"Hamlet didn't say that."

"I think I remember Hamlet accurately!"

"Well, *I* remember Mel Gibson accurately, and he didn't say that. That Polonius guy did."

Thanks for the recap Julie. I'm glad everyone gets a piece of this wedding action. But I think the best is yet to happen, i.e. when they find out neither has money.

I'm surprised that Leo went through with it, I was hoping when he hesitatingly told her he was gay, that he was instead hesitatingly telling her they were bankrupt. That would have stopped the wedding. Now they'll have to get an annulment.

I hope Mini doesn't turn on MA now that she knows that he's with Lupe. But her knowledge could prove useful with her dealings with Alejo. She knows that Lupe will never marry him.

Another great one, Julie, thanks! I especially liked all your "next time" comments.
A "honeymoon at the Nopalara?" What a thought! I can't wait to see what comes next.

I wonder if Maca even has enough money to get herself home, wherever that may be, or if she spent everything she had on her wedding dress and such assuming she wouldn't need even a centavo after she married Leo and his imagined fortunes. I hope she's stuck hanging around because she has no other place to go! It does seem like she might be up for hanging on Tato, since he's got money. Would the fact that he's still in prepa bother her at all? Maybe she can give Ahole a try and take him for all he's worth! Or she could get together with Saul.

I wonder if the wedding coins are enough for bus fare and a taco. Maca might need those! I hope she held on to them!

I'll bet that when the noaccounts steal the money, the Menchaca's will get blamed.

And Emo Bassist will look so sad about it!

maybe Maca could sell (or pawn since sharky is around) some of those wedding gifts to fly herself back to Spain. that is if they even get to keep them.

They may drag out the unveiling of poverty of the families. We could be in this for a couple of weeks, but I hope not.

Thanks for your excellent eyewitness account of the wedding of the year and the surrounding festivities, Julie. Very well done and extremely entertaining and amusing.

Tizoc's and Vanesa's version of Ave Maria was so entertaining and yet so wrong. Even so, on the whole it was much better and certainly much less cringe-worthy that Pablo Montero's off-key rendition in a previous TN.

So Leo is gay... or not. I think that he is still genuinely conflicted and never even gave it any thought until he met Diego A.

I thought Maca made a stunningly gorgeous bride and I really liked the Countess' elegant pink dress and hat. Minnie looked dangerously gorgeous in her strapless peach dress and how good was it to see Mati in something other than those pajamas and robe?

I can't even begin to imagine the fallout from all that transpired at the wedding.

And the baby must have been born by now.

Carlos

Interesting comments about the fact that Leo told Maca about being gay, but not about being in ruin. I didn't find it odd at all. It even reflects well on his character, in a twisted sort of way.

See, in his mind, the financial side of it is purely practical, but he's doing that for his family. (I did say this was twisted, right?) But the love/sex/attraction side of it is sacred to him. It's one thing to marry for money, but it's NOT okay to marry someone if you know they will never be happy with you, and if you know that you'll have to cheat in order to tolerate the arrangement.

Now, the money... With some luck and good timing, AS could catch the Counts with their hands full of cash when she asks to be reimbursed for the wedding. Then they'll have no excuse not to pay up. This opens another can of worms, with AS paying the Menchacas with stolen money. Better hope none of those bills are marked.

I just had a thought. Can Perla and Tomas sue the diet pill manufacturer? (I am going to assume for now that she's only woozy and not dead.)

Carlos? Baby? What baby??

Oh right, that baby. I've been assuming that the baby was just an excuse to take the Detectives Gomez out of the story for a while, maybe just long enough for MA to relax and let his guard down.

I'm not ready to bank on Leo's sexuality just yet. Whether he's gay or not, he must have realized that there was a big difference between the way Diego looks at him (with admiration in his eyes) and the way Maca looks at him (with Euro signs in her eyes). Obviously he senses that something is amiss, but it might take longer to find out WHAT is amiss. It would be an unfamiliar sensation for someone like Leo to be loved rather than used.

Julie, interesting analysis of Leo's morals. That seems very true, that to him money is less important (so long as there's plenty of it to go around), but that marrying for money would be a perfectly satisfactory business arrangement as long as you could follow through and have the emotional and physical bond one would expect from a marriage. If you can't do that, THEN you're cheating the other person and yourself.

Too bad he didn't follow through with that conversation and talk to Maca about what exactly she did expect from their marriage. Then again, have they ever discussed ANYTHING? They haven't covered any of the typical things people talk about before they marry, such as where they plan to live and whether they want to have children. And whether he's a package deal with the momster-in-law tagging along.

It would have been so easy to get rid of Maca by telling her yes, ruina R us. I love how gently and kindly this TN is dealing with homosexuality, the next frontier is racism, when will main characters ever reflect the real skintones of Mexico? At least this show is lambasting snobbery. I can't wait to see how this anvil falls and I'm recapping tonight! Since I'm new to the party I don't know how Leo and Maca met, or for how long we've done she is a desperate gold-digger. And are those her real parents or just some lowlifes she's hired to impersonate royalty?

I don't think we know how Leo and Maca met, or where she's really from. We know they used to hang out together on the private-jet-set rich kids party circuit. They have mentioned places they went together in New York. How Maca got into that crowd in the first place, we aren't sure. But when she came to visit them in the D.F., supposedly not having been to Mexico before, she knew right where to go for good cheap street tacos when it was her turn to treat for dinner.

The unaccountables are not her real parents; they are actors she hired.

I'm surprised Leo didn't insist on performing some "music" himself at the wedding! Remember his majestic performance at the fashion show at the beginning of the novela?

We don't have Maca's whole backstory yet, but those people are actors that she hired to pose as her parents. Maca and Leo met in NY, details unclear, some time before our story began. They became novios over the phone DURING MA's engagement party to Mini. (Like, "Quiet everybody, I've got a phone call!") They maintained infrequent telephone contact after the RPs' money ran out. She came to Mexico for a visit a few months ago.

Ana Sofia had just stolen 300,000 pesos from the Menchacas to put herself up in a swanky hotel, but then had to let Leo in on the deal when Maca showed up. They entertained Maca, fed her, and bought expensive gifts with the stolen money and a lot of bounced checks. (In return, she treated them to street tacos one evening.)

At the end of Maca's visit, they got engaged. Maca was so thrilled that she offered to stay in Mexico to live with them right away, but they really couldn't afford to stay a minute longer at the hotel so they sent her home to plan the wedding, LOL, not that she did any planning beyond hiring the actors.

And now they are married. Isn't that romantic??

Oh yeah, Leo's one-finger piano concerto. Well, he hasn't been able to practice ever since his soulmate piano got smashed in Italy Street.

Thanks for the backstory! Now, I've been worrying - have the MENCHACAS paid for all this wedding food etc or has Ana Sofia scrounged the money from that sharky Romeo of hers?

Great summary of Leo and Maca's romance! Too bad they didn't have a slideshow of that to play at the reception!

" they really couldn't afford to stay a minute longer at the hotel" HA! That's putting it nicely! They had already overstayed their welcome and their funds significantly, and the staff were running them out! I miss that hotel desk clerk. Can someone else please stay at the Tres Estaciones so he can pop up again?

I think the piano was the most tragic loss of the show so far. I mean, Adolfo's death was kind of a shock, and the loss of Ahole's pants area was just funny, but the smashed piano was gutwrenching.

Thank you for the recap Julie!

This is why Scarlett O'Hara only took that dress from curtains to jail. So sad for Ana Sofía.

I wonder what impression Leo got about Maca after she wanted to continue with the wedding even though he had just confessed he was gay. It was obvious then that she didn't want a real marriage.

Julia, lol, I love Clueless. Thanks for the quote.

Jarocha

I'm surprised AS hasn't noticed that there are no guests from Maca's side other than her parents. Her friends already noticed there's no royalty. I would have thought that would be a red flag for her

They didn't invite any of Leo's and Maca's old friends, either, did they? I wonder who the people who DID show up are. Considering they only got the invitations like two days before, I would think they shouldn't be too surprised that not many people came. But yes, they might eventually wonder why NO ONE from Maca's family other than her supposed parents, and no besties or anything, attended.

Jane, Ana Sofia has been negotiationg with the Menchacas to cater the wedding and borrowing money from don Salomon to pay for the wedding with the understanding that Maca's parents will reimburse her for it all since they are the parents of the bride.
Lotsa luck!

Jarifa

Although I once attended a wedding where I was the only friend of the bride's there, and none of her family attended; meanwhile her husband's whole extended family and tons of old friends were there. Some people's families are just like that, or there are circumstances...

I want people to ask the noncounts lots of detailed questions about Siberia.

I hope the Menchacas have already gotten that money from Don Salomon. I would think they would have to have gotten at least a good chunk of it upfront in order to buy the food and decorations.

I doubt the menchacas have seen any money so far. I'd think AS paid for the supplies when she went to the market with them but that's all. The way things are headed the menchacas may be laboring for free right now.

Jaime Camil was a villain in Carla Estrada's Mi Destino eres Tu. It's funny since Sylvia Pasquel and him are together there and Lucero is as well when they were the protagonists of PESE.

What? Jaime Camil was a villain??? I cant't believe it! I can't stand it! Tell me it isn't true!
