Qué Pobres, Lunes 6/30/14 (#125): Pretentious? Moi?

Prince Emiliano is full of attitude about his mother's engagement to MA, but he does sort of have a point. First they were cousins, and now they're getting married? He's in jail, so what is going on? Emi waves the newspaper photo right in Lupe's face (so maybe he has a point, but he's still a brat). Lupe says, "MA is a good man and you know it. I thought you wanted a father like him." Emi says that was before he met his real dad.
And of course he's really in a mess at school because when his pals didn't believe he had a father, he let them think it was MA; now he has a real father and they don't believe that AND they think his father is a criminal. (And, in fact, he is... it's just not the same father. I'm getting a headache just thinking about how confusing this would be for a kid.)

Frida overhears the conversation and privately tells Lupe she can relate to what the boy is going through at school. She counsels Lupe to be patient with him. Later, Frida visits Emiliano to talk about the way he was bullied. They bond over the helpless feeling of being teased by classmates about foolish things.

Top Cop asks Ahole, "Is it possible that someone could have framed your cousin for the fraud?" Ahole says, "If I thought so, I'd be the first to look for proof!" ("And destroy it," he doesn't add, but you know he's thinking it.)

Emi calls Ahole. He's confused about MA, who's always been a good friend. Ahole assures Emi that MA is the bad one, but not to worry about the engagement because Ahole and Emi are already working on their plan to get Lupe to marry Ahole. Ahole tells Emi that all women, including Lupe, just love to make men beg. Emi is taken aback by this bizarre description of his mother.

Vilma tells Ahole she double-checked, and there's NO WAY Ahole can be traced to the fraud. If MA gets out of jail somehow, Vilma says, they'll just pin it on another scapegoat. Vilma pours something into his coffee - I hope it's arsenic. She leaves, and Ahole gloats to himself that he's already got the perfect scapegoat.

At the market, Gwendy corners Nepo and kisses him in front of everyone. She drags Nepo off to his office and asks: "So are we an item or aren't we?"

Call me crazy, but I think she's too much woman for him.

Trofeo walks in while Gwendy and Nepo are fooling around under his desk, but they still have all their clothes on, so no harm done. Trofeo's got the $$$ from the juice stand, which prompts Gwendy to remind Nepo that this profitable juice stand was Mike's idea. This prompts Trofeo to remind Nepo of some of the problems that Mike brought them, including the trouble with the gun. Gwendy remembers Nepo having a gun, but this is the first time she's heard about what happened to the gun after that! She tells Nepo he should really tell the police how the gun ended up in MA's hands.

MA is summoned to meet with a surprise visitor. It's Mini! Her mom called in a favor to get to see MA. Like being in prison isn't bad enough!! She's threatening ("but don't take this as a threat") not to testify for him if it turns out that he's really engaged to that tamale-making fry-cook. He tries to get her to go over what she'll say in her testimony, but she wants to plan ahead for when he's freed, gets his money back, and they can go to Paris!

Visiting time is over. MA reminds Mini to be discreet about their reconciliation. She tells him she's going to try to arrange for a conjugal visit next time!

AS asks Lupe when she's planning to tell MA she's marrying Ahole. Lupe thinks AS misunderstood something, but AS isn't asking her, she's TELLING her, that she (Lupe) is a climber and a gold-digger. She mustn't marry MA. She's sure Lupe really prefers Ahole. There is more, but it's horrible and foul. AS is so snide and snotty and self-righteous I want to smack her right into August. Make that September.

Later, Carmelita notices that Lupe is distant and distracted. She's upset that Ahole accused her of being a lousy mother, and Emi doesn't approve of her engagement, and then AS with all her BS, etc. Then Chuy shows up and comments on how sad Lupe looks, too. Carmelita tells Chuy how AS talked to Lupe. Chuy is furious.

In the penthouse, AS is spewing all kinds of venom about Lupe to Leo and Frida, who have better things to do than listen to her nonsense. Then AS waves the magazine cover with Perla's face on it. Leo is amused. Frida says this "news" is so five minutes ago, and who cares any more? Leo says he can laugh about this one for centuries.

Chuy bursts in, sort of apologizes for not knocking, and tells the kids to clear out so he can talk to their mother. They listen from outside the door along with Carmelita, not because they intend to eavesdrop, but "just in case" (according to Leo).

In the most respectful and dignified way imaginable, Chuy firmly tells AS that Lupe is not the kind of woman AS is saying she is. If Ahole is saying differently, then Ahole is the liar. Lupe is respectable and hard-working and gave up her the best years of her life to raise her son alone because of Ahole. As long as AS lives under Chuy's roof, she'd better not talk that way about Lupe ever again.

AS promises to get out from under Chuy's crappy old roof as soon as possible. Chuy is firm again: "I've treated you well, given you the best I had, and been unfailingly courteous, so you can stop being putting on airs and being so hateful. You've done nothing but mistreat my family since you got here, and we cannot continue to be so accommodating. You'd better start acting nice."

AS takes offense at being called pretentious, but is soon speaking Italian again. Chuy tells her not to interfere with Lupe and MA; they're old enough to know what they're doing. He adds, "Why don't you find something to do? Like looking after your children? You need to EARN respect. If you want MY respect, stop screwing with my family, or I'll screw back." (I paraphrased slightly.)

Carmelita admires Chuy for the way he spoke to AS. Chuy admires Carmelita even more.

Carm knows something else is bothering Lupe, though. She tells Lupe not to worry about what Ahole said about MA and Mini reconciling, but Lupe says she's worrying about something else: Emi's bad behavior.

Evening. At the prison, MA tells his cellmate he's just gotta talk to Lupe. The sympathetic cellmate offers the use of his phone for a discount: all the money in MA's pocket.

Outside, Leo tells Diego about Chuy and AS. He doesn't want to go up there until AS cools off. Leo shows Diego Perla's magazine cover; he wants to mock it some more. Offended, Diego says he's happy for Perla and doesn't like the way Leo makes fun of her. He stomps off. Leo is a little bummed, but he still can't stop laughing.

Lupe stops in to see Emi, who pretends to be asleep. Lupe's phone rings, waking Tizoc. MA has to hang up before she can answer, because the guard caught him with the phone and take it away. Ah, oui, oui.

Morning. Gwendy informs Carmelita that she and Nepo are, indeed an item, or at least that's what he said with his kiss. Carm reminds Gwendy that sometimes a kiss is just a kiss, but Gwendy is sure about Nepo and even thinks he'll make up with Diego soon and help out MA too.

Lupe tells Emi's teacher/principal that she'll transfer him at the end of the semester. The teacher says okay, but don't kid yourself that that changing schools will change anything between Emi and Ahole. As Emi gets closer to puberty he'll want to spend more time with his father, even if Lupe forbids it.

In the Menchaca kitchen, AS is stirring a pot. Literally. Cooking breakfast for her kids. (Allegedly it's Eggs Benedict, but that's an awfully big pot to be stirring Hollandaise sauce.) Carmelita tries to egg her on, so to speak, but AS doesn't take the bait. She serves her Eggs McRuizPalacios to Leo and Frida. They are nervous about it; I think they say she's never cooked for them before. Carmelita and Lupe watch with morbid fascination.

At the market, Nepo tries to deny to Trofeo that Gwendy is his girlfriend, but Trofeo shames Nepo into admitting that MA wouldn't hurt a soul. MA and Lupe need his help.

So Nepo and Trofeo meet with Saul: Nepo wants to testify on My Name Mike's behalf!

Next Time: Lupe and Mini put their heads together. Ouch!

This is so good already. Good luck with the dentist.

I was so glad that Diego called Leo out on his stupidity about Perla. Leo was being a putz. I hope he sees the error of his ways.

I loved that talk Don C had with AS! It's about time he let her have it. I loved Leo, Frida and Carm listening outside the door. That was so funny with Leo and the cup was it? Too funny.

So what is Ahole up to? Vilma let him have it too. I wonder what scapegoat he can come up with next?

MA was so funny in the jail with his roomy and getting that illegal cell phone, too bad he got caught.

I loved Guendy going to the market and showing everyone that she and Nepo are an item, whether he wanted people to know or not. He sure took his hat off and fanned himself. I am glad he went to Saul's office and said he's tesify for my name Mike.

I'm glad Frida had that talk with Emi. I so don't want him turning into a little Ahole, and I don't like Ahole poisoning his little mind either. I wish Emi would stop being so rude to his Mama and for goodness sake let her finish before he stomps off.

I too wonder if AS' Eggs Benedict were edible. The kids sure were surprised.

Mads, based on the timing of Ahole's comment I'm certain that Vilma is the scapegoat he has in mind - especially since she's assured him many times that HIS name isn't on anything (and it was established very early on that at least some of the money is in HER name).

Here's hoping that Vilma has taken some precautions in case dear Ahole does turn against her. Starry-eyed with love or not, she strikes me as the type who doesn't leave anything to chance even when the worst (like being rejected by Ahole) is too awful to contemplate.

I'm not gonna be able to flesh out the recap before the dentist, so my update will have to wait till lunchtime. Sorry. :(

I was silently applauding Chuy's speech to AS, every word...
and I agree that Vilma might be the scapegoat A-hole has in mind... i hope she realizes he is not loyal to anyone but his ego and will have prepared for this.

Between the soccer delay and the weather/tornado warnings, I thought I'd never see this last night. : )

Julie, thanks for the highpoints you listed.

Anyway, I agree with you all that Vilma is probably who Alejo has in mind to set up for the fall.

AS was particularly nasty with Lupita. And of course she had to throw having an illegitimate child in Lupita's face as if Alejo had no role in it. Sure made the hairs stand up on my neck! We are in the 21st century, right? The most ridiculous was AS's taking Alejo's word because he was a Ruizpalacios inspite if what he has done to her and her family. She should realize that he is directly responsible for not having as much elixir as she woukd like.

Don Chuy's lecture at least got AS into the kitchen and actually doing something other than drinking. It also got him some admiration from Carmelita. They were so cute complimenting each other.

Poor MA trying to keep the prison guard between him and the meowing Minerva dreaming of a conjugal visit was very funny. Then poor MA with the cell phone. Not his day at the reclusorio.

I liked Frida talking to Emiliano and offering her understanding and support.

Diego continued to be a class act as Leonardo relapsed into his stupid Ruizpalacios self. I was glad Diego called him on it, called Perla his friend and left him standing there all by himself.

Unfortunately, the principal was probably right: Emiliano changing schools will do nothing to distance him from his father.

I’m looking forward to the full recap later, but enjoyed the highlights.

AS made my blood boil with all the nasty stuff she was saying to Lupe. I really don’t know how Lupe does it. I would have slapped AS long ago. I also marveled at Chuy, because that would have been the straw that broke this camel’s back. It would have not been a warning—I would have kicked her out of my house then and there. How dare she call Lupe a slut and a golddigger?! I’m glad Lupe told Carmelita. She needed a hug and a bit of a cry with MA in jail, AS getting on her case, Emi freezing her out, her siblings selling her out, and her dad not being very supportive.

Good for Diego for calling Leo on his nastiness, and for Frida for talking to Emi about the bullying and pressures at school.

We didn't have a delay on the west coast, I'm sorry you all did.
I hope Diego gives Leo the cold shoulder until he apologizes about making fun of Perla.

Even though moving Emiliano from that school won't stop her problem with Alejo, it will stop her problem of the school giving him access to Emi when Lupita asked them not to.

I was hoping that Lupita would tell AS that if she were a gold digger that she would have told Alejo about Emi 10 years ago and wouldn't be denying that she's going to marry him again. AS's logic just doesn't compute.

Dpn't watch this, but sometimes check in on the recaps and love your new avatar Marta.

Ack! Better late than never. The recap is done. Sorry for the delay.

Cathyx, I agree that switching Emi's school might solve the problem of the school letting Ahole have access, but I think the teacher's point was that Emi will find a way to sneak around with his dad no matter where he goes to school. Not that this excuses the teacher for enabling them!

AS has had momentary lapses of humanity before, so I'm trying not to get too excited about her breakfast experiment. If this thing with the eggs doesn't work out, she'll go back to her rotten old self. And if it DOES work out, she'll be insufferable. That is my prediction, anyway.

Thanks, Julie. I only saw the first half.

Lupita is far too kind to AS. I'm sure taking the high road will pay off for her in the end, but AS needs to be challenged more. Calling her a golddigger makes NO SENSE. If she were out to get money from Ahole, she could have been collecting child support all these years! Not avoiding him like the plague and refusing to take anything from him.

Who's the one who mooches off everyone? AS is such a Hector Projector.

Leo really was being a jerk about Perla's cover, although his impersonation of her was dead on and hilarious.

I think Ahole is helping Perla and Tizoc not only to leverage them into helping him snag Lupita, but also because if he is going to be related to them as he wants, he probably thinks it would look better for him to be in-laws with a successful musician and model than ordinary lower-class people.

Thanks for the full meal deal writeup! I'm sure it's mil ocho mil times better than AS's eggs.

I need to watch the rest of this to enjoy Chuy reading AS the riot act. If only he knew she stole the money so he would REALLY give her some hell!

Where is Mati? How long will we have to wonder about her?

off subject... just found this.
Carlos, have you seen this?
its a book on notable females in history... chapter 8 is on our favorite colombian revolutionist. La Pola

http://books.google.com/books?id=jCNz6CoIZV4C&pg=PA75#v=onepage&q&f=false

Julia, I hadn't thought about that - Ahole wanting to make Perla and Tizoc more presentable as in-laws. It makes sense, specially since he doesn't respect their father's wrestling fame at all.

But I'm sure that the power to crush Lupe's siblings' dreams will be a powerful weapon for Ahole too.

I really would like to see how Mati is doing.

And I'm still curious about Perla's diet pills. Last I heard, Tizoc threw them away but it turned out she had more. Is this a plotline that fell through the cracks? Or is it a time bomb that will result in a Very Special Episode with lots of lecturing about health, diet, and body image?

The writers will probably remember Perla's diet pills when they get into doldrums and are racking their brains for something to use as filler.

I want to see how the agentes Gomez are doing, too! How long will they be on baby leave? They need to jump back into the mix!

Oops, I think my previous post did not get through. I'll have to resend it when I get home.

I am not sure that Alejo's plan is to make his allegedly future in-laws more presentable. With regards to Perla I. She got on the cover thanks to Mini's lack of responsibility and Alejo paid Perla and as far as I know that was the end of that. With Tizoc; however, is another story. Alejo can use T's ambition to make him do something that will come back and bite him, excerting even more pressure on Lupita to submit to hid will. One thing is certain, Alejo has both T and Perla in his pocket, but this is also Lupita's fault for not telling then how Alejo really is (as far as I know, the story has not shared with us exactly how much Lupita's siblings know about Alejo).

As for the diet pill subplot, well I think that this is the weakest part of the story. There isn't hardly any emphasis on this subplot, the story does not clearly show any diet pill abuse, does not really show any kind of eating disorder (like for example in Amores Verdaderos). It just seems to get the message across that diet pills are bad (which they are not if taken responsibly).

Great recap, Julie!
I'm with you on 'oh the confusion! in this kid's head!'
And of course he's really in a mess at school because when his pals didn't believe he had a father, he let them think it was MA; now he has a real father and they don't believe that AND they think his father is a criminal. (And, in fact, he is... it's just not the same father. I'm getting a headache just thinking about how confusing this would be for a kid.

Julie, thanks for filling in what I missed last night.

I don't expect much of the diet pill subplot and have to confess I really don't care much about Perla as a character. I would rather that they spend their time on other characters.

I wonder what AS would be like if she were ever sober and had her underlying depression under control. I am sure the telenovela will never be long enough for that to happen but it would be interesting.

Cathyx, you made a good point about the school. What annoys me most about Emiliano's school it seems that it doesn't matter what they agree upon with Lupita they always cave into his "father's" wishes. So since when are Emiliano's sweet talking "father's" wishes more valid than Lupita's? Maybe being upper class and male just works! Don't like that conclusion.

Jarifa

I'm all for Lupita moving Emiliano to another school. Even if he wants to spend time with his father, at least she might get less stupid administrators who won't blatantly ignore student safety and who won't violate direct orders just because some guy makes Bambi eyes at them. She should ask principles at prospective schools what they would do if a strange man wanted to hang around the school with the kids and buy them ice cream.

totally with you Julia! and make it evident to the school admin that A-hole is not to come close to Emi unless Lupe is notified and approves in advance!

Thanks for this great recap, Julie. Well done. I haven't commented in awhile although I've managed to catch up and keep up with the show, recaps, and comments... usually a day behind. Fortunately I was saw that the schedule was behind yesterday and made adjustments in the recording settings.

Thanks for that link, Marta. What a great chapter about La Pola.

I'm guessing that poor Vilma is Alejo's alternate scapegoat.

Isn't it about time for us to check in on Mati? Maybe some gang of toughs have taken her in and adopted her as their leader.

Sorry I'd fallen behind, I'll try to do a better job of participating in the discussion.

Carlos

I wonder where the Detectives Gomez live?

And what they'd do if a disoriented grandma wandered into their neighborhood?

I think it's a nutty idea even as I'm typing it - but it'd be a neat way to bring Agentes Gomez back into the story.

Thanks, Julie! You must have survived your dentist appointment in a good frame of mind to write such an entertaining recap. "Eggs McRP" - ha!
At this point in the show I'd like to see more of Mati and less of Mini.
Do we want the agents Gomez back on the job? She seemed determined to pin it all on MA - I think he wasn't too sure. I like having the current detective who seems a little more sympathetic to MA.
I didn't see the previews (they never show them on Hulu). When you say: "Next Time: Lupe and Mini put their heads together. Ouch!" I hope that means that Lupe has a big old head butt for Mini. Right?

Ann: You guessed right. :-)

Julie, great idea! I think Granny Mati would be a nice, helpful, calming influence for frantic and tired new parents. A day or two for the drugs to wear off and she can probably settle right in and make herself useful.

Jen Gomez did start jumping to conclusions, but in the beginning of their investigation, she actually had some good intuition. Maybe she just got into a hurry and careless because she wanted it all settled before the baby arrived?

I don't think we can fault Gomez for paying attention to the evidence. That's her job. In fact, Chavez has been doing exactly the same thing. However, perhaps his presumably longer experience is making him more reluctant to take Ahole at face value.

Even so, I'd like to imagine that, had the Gomezes brought MA to jail, they would have been just as open to listening to MA as Chavez has been.
