Qué Pobres, Lunes 6/9/14 (#110): Signs of the Apocalypse

Leo's looking for a job?

Ana Sofia's asking for cleaning supplies?

Frida's claiming Tizoc as her boyfriend, and her classmates are laughing at Tato??

Laugh it up while you can! Calamity is nigh!!

While Sharky prepares to show Alejo the Ahole the stuff that was pawned by a rich family who fell on hard times, Vilma calls about the property transfer. Ahole leaves without seeing the stuff or saying goodbye.

Chuy is signing the paperwork at the notary's office when Vilma shows up. "You're committing an illegal act. Nobody knows where the legitimate owner is, so how did you get her signature? Or did you people have something to do with her disappearance?" The notary looks at Vilma's documents and agrees that the Menchacas will have to explain where they got the owner's signature. Better yet, she can come here and testify on her own behalf!

(Vilma makes snotty remarks about the Menchacas' wet-behind-the-ears lawyer.)

Lupita asks Vilma if Ahole sent her. Vilma says she's just doing this for the company and warns that the Menchacas could get in a lot of trouble for this. "Get a good lawyer," she advises them sarcastically, "or any lawyer."

MA is wearing silk pajamas. (Ahole's?) Mini's had breakfast delivered, but accidentally drops half of it out the open window (I don't think this was scripted!). She promises to get the laptop at her mother's today. Nervously, MA says he has no way to thank Mini for all she's doing for him. She spoon-feeds him breakfast: "Here comes the airplane...." She swears she's doing all of this strictly out of friendship.

Frida lets Tizoc accompany her to school. There, he offers to buzz off lest her friends make fun. She says no, those people aren't real friends. Some random guy tells Tizoc to stop bothering the young lady. Frida informs the man (and anyone else paying attention) that his name is Tizoc and he's her boyfriend.

Nepo whines to Gwendy, "If love is keeping my son from fútbol, then to hell with love. He's going to be a star!" Gwendy tries to tell him that he is in love, but... but Nepo won't let her finish.

Mini and Isela are having breakfast together at Isela's hotel. Mini gloats, "I should have been an actress." She tells Isela what's up. "I'll keep up making excuses to keep MA at the house. Don't tell Ahole that MA is there, or I'll kill you!" Mini sticks Isela with the bill.

Leo and Diego are on a not-date. Leo has an Ice cream and Diego has a Popsicle. Leo admires Diego for telling his dad about wanting to quit fútbol. Leo says someone suggested he teach art at the cultural center; Diego likes the idea.

Gwendy approaches and sees Diego with Leo. "¡Sopas perico!" she exclaims. Her suspicions are confirmed!

Mini tells MA she wasn't able to get the laptop; her mother is refusing her calls. MA takes Mini to task for withholding information. She tries to play innocent; she swears she gave him everything she thought would be useful and withheld only the stuff that didn't look like anything. MA says she should have given him and Saul everything to let them decide what is or is not useful. He asks again, has Mini been hiding things from him? Mini squeals, "don't you trust me? I'm risking my life to help you."

On the phone, Vilma calls Ahole, "No, you won't be blamed for this, and in fact Lupe will probably even call you for help." (I see a picture of blindfolded Justice behind Vilma. Justice ain't the only blind woman in this scene!) Ahole is coming to believe that MA really did make his family live in that nasty Nopalera house and maybe he really did kidnap Mati, too.

Vilma tells Ahole how swell he is at great length, but Perla arrives with Emiliano and Ahole hangs up. Perla is already staring all around with her mouth wide open.

At Ahole's house, Mini pulls a USB drive from her cleavage and swears to MA that this is everything, and there's nothing useful on it. MA still wants the laptop, and offers to go to Isela's penthouse himself to get it. Mini PROMISES to get it tomorrow.

Diego tries to brainstorm possible jobs for Leo. Leo resists: he can't be a bus driver, because he can't drive a stick. He was meant to "drive" a company, not a taxi. He's too pretty for menial jobs. His hands are meant for great things.

Diego suggests that Leo be an interior decorator. The people in the neighborhood can't afford to pay much, but it would be a way for Leo to do what he likes. Leo says no; his style is minimalist, and the neighbors' style is baroque. Too many colors and tacky knickknacks. "Well, then, you'll have to teach art," Diego concludes. Leo agrees.

Later, some "friends" of Diego's come by ad tease him for hanging out with the "princeso." Diego chases them off with some tough talk. "And if you come back, you'll have to mess with... HIM!" Leo shouts after their retreating forms.

At home, Tomás, Chuy, and Lupe all doubt that Vilma was only there on her own behalf. Chuy remembers Vilma from the wrestling exhibition. They wonder if the company's board of directors sent her. Lupita doesn't want to ask Ahole for help, and Chuy doesn't want her to go near him. Tom doesn't want them to get sued: MA isn't in a position to help, and they don't want Vilma to find out that Mati is there.

At the office, Perla is excited to see a cover girl in the hallway and says she looks even thinner in person. Ahole flatters Perla, "you sure know a lot about fashion." Perla brags that's she's a model too. (Emi is snickering, though I think he means it in a supportive way.) Perla says she tried out at a model here a while ago, but they said she was too dark and kicked her out. Ahole feigns horror and apologizes on behalf of the company. He promises to find out who that was, and they'll be in big trouble.

Ahole takes Emi and Perla to a big playroom. "All this stuff is for you to play with whenever you like," he says. Impressed, Perla urges the boy to say "no manches" in thanks. She tells Emi to do his homework, but Ahole says "why don't you play with us for a while and do homework later."

An assistant named Ivonne comes in and says Mini's not here to supervise the photo shoot. Ahole offers to watch Emi for Perla so that Perla can watch the photo shoot.

Ana Sofia pretends to be dusting a room when Mati walks in. Actually, AS was looking for a bottle of anisette she'd socked away, but Mati says, if AS is in a cleaning mood, why not ask Carmela for some cleaning supplies? Mati will go for a bucket, herself. AS tells herself she needs a drink to deal with the porca miseria, but she goes downstairs anyway.

In the kitchen, Chuy tells Carmela that he has a renewed appreciation for the expression, "Don't sell the milk before you get the cow." He may be a fighter, but lately he feels he's getting his butt kicked. He thanks Carmelita for always being here with the family. "What would we do without you?" he asks. "I'm happy to do it," she replies. Chuy suggests that they go out for a "cafecito" someday. Carmelita is so pleased that she doesn't even get upset when AS interrupts to ask for the cleaning supplies. "I'll even teach you how to use them," Carmela laughs.

At the photo shoot, starstruck Perla makes weird faces behind the photographer's back as Yvonne and Ahole watch in confusion. Ahole asks Perla if she'd like to do a photo shoot herself. (Ahole admits he left Emi in the playroom by himself.) Ahole demands, "Stop everything and photograph this girl!" He tells the other models to take her to the dressing room and fix her up.

I anticipate an ugly, spiteful makeover, but actually the models do a good job. Perla is dressed and made up nicely (no flower in her hair, either). However, she's still making ridiculous faces for the camera. Apparently, she thinks they're sexy. The photographer protests, "We're not doing a poster for a tire shop!" He urges her to to be fresh, natural, innocent, yet daring and ferocious. This results in even crazier poses and faces.

"Seduce me and the camera. We want the Perla Ivette you are inside," he says. This actually works. Perla relaxes, and the photos are good. The models grow impatient...

At school, Tato nags Frida about Tizoc. "Is it true he's your boyfriend? How could you dump me for him??" Frida calls Tato names, and their "friends" laugh at him!

Later, Frida puts on a big display of telling Tizoc he's an Aztec prince. Tizoc wants to talk in private.

AS says she'll sit and watch Carmela clean up, and then next time she'll do it herself. Carmela isn't fooled. "You'll have to be more patient with her than I am," Mati tells Carmela. Defeated, AS takes the mop and starts waving it around the furniture. She dunks it in a bucket of water, nearly knocking the bucket over, and swipes it across the rug.

Isela is at the hotel bar (of course). Mini calls: she doesn't think she can keep up the lie much longer. She'll get the laptop, but take all info off of it first. Isela says Mini needs an exorcism (I think there's more joke here that I missed). Mini says she'll call later and fake an argument in front of MA; Isela says since Mini's such a great actress she can give Isela a break and fake the call too.

Alone-ish (friends are watching), Tizoc wants to know why Frida is making such a show with him. Sometimes she's demonstrative to upset her friends, but other times she wants to keep it all under wraps. He feels like a pet that she shows off to her friends and then hides at home.

At the cultural center, Leo tells the director how great he is: a cross between Picasso and Brad Pitt. The director says there might be an opening after summer vacation, but it doesn't pay well. Leo says he'll get back to her in the fall.

Leo whines to Diego about his bad luck. Diego says that's just how it is when you're looking for a job. Diego wants to leave; he doesn't like the way people are looking at them. Leo says, "They're all looking at ME!"

Mini pretends to argue with her mom on the phone and tells MA she'll go tomorrow for the laptop no matter what. MA leaves the room without his phone. Mini takes out the battery and hides it so he won't be interrupted by any more calls from Lupita. (Like he won't notice that it weighs only half what it used to?)

Back in the playroom, Perla humbly thanks Ahole for letting her feel like a real model. He'll send her the portfolio when the photos are ready. She says she owes him a favor. "Now that you mention it," Ahole says, "...but I don't want you do feel obligated." (LOL.) "Just say 'jump,' and I'll jump!" Perla promises.

Ahole tells Perla he wants to settle down and have a family with Emi and Guadalupe. "You've heard bad things about me, but give me the chance to prove I can make Lupita happy." He'll improve Lupe's standard of living as well as her family's.

Perla says, "The problem is, my sister is totally in love. And not with you!"

"What?" asks Ahole with premeditated surprise. "Tell me who? I must know!"

Next Time: While Lupe worries that her family may have to move out soon, MA tries to escape from his plush prison. Where will they all end up?

I so loved your signs of the Apocalypse! They are so right on! Can't wait for your entire recap : )

Funniest scene, Ana Chofi trying to con Carmelita into "showing" her how real cleaning was done, HA! Carmelita was so wise to her.

Guendy finding out who the Sopas Perico, she keeps saying, is. What will she do with this info?

Great Apocalypse Teaser, Julie. What an episode, I can't wait to see your recap tomorrow and read the patio parleys.
Buenas noches...

Working on it now... won't be long.

Done!

Julie, thank you for a wonderful recap.

Two expressions that I will remember from this novela: Porca miseria ! / ¡Sopas perico!

I am ready for something to happen or will we just continue with MA spending the day(s) in the red satin pj's?

Poor Lupita when she finds out about Perla's modeling experience at the Editorial with Alejo. I hated when Perla asked how she could ever repay Alejo and said tomhim "call me a frog and I will jump". Y

Poor don Chuy realizing he has no option in reference to his ownership of the La Nopalera property but to just sit tight and see how things play out.

Poor Tizoc feeling like a pet out on display.

I loved AS mopping/wet mopping everything in sight.

Sounds like Leonardo will never find a job worthy of him.

Finally, don Chuy is putting the moves on Carmelita. That made the episode for me!

Julie:

Thanks for this most marvelous recap.

Ahole really made a misstep here with causing a ruckus over the house. He didn't want this to affect Lupe, he miscalculated and also wants to add one more charge, kidnapping Dona Mati, to the list of MA's "crimes". And Perla about to give Ahole info is no surprise. I can't wait for the piecart to hit Ahole.

Mini is so funny in her wanting to "help" MA, she doesn't know MA is so on to her. I too wonder how he is going to escape from Mini and where he is going to go.

The funniest scene was Ana Chofi and the mop. Too funny.

Thanks again Julie : )

From the look on Perla's face when Ahole asked her who Lupe's guy was, I'm not so sure she's going to tell him. Either she'll stall until they're interrupted, or Emi will distract them, or maybe she'll say it's Nepo.

I'm also not so sure Ahole made a mistake with the house thing. Even though Lupe suspects him (not what he intended!), he now has the family at a disadvantage. He can "help" them again, which will just make Lupe feel more pressured. That does seem to be her weak spot, and it is wearing her down.

If the family home is put in jeopardy, just what will Lupita feel she needs to do to save it? I don't even want to think about it. : (. I hope I am wrong in my suspicions.

Jarifa

Jarifa, I have the same suspicions. Let's just hope it doesn't go too far.

Maybe Ahole's injury isn't fully healed yet.

Julie and Jarifa,

Oh, noes, I don't want Lupe to have to stoop that low. It's a shame that MA doesn't know what is going on with the house. Saul was the one that had all the best info and would be able to help them.

I've been thinking a lot about how this could be solved. If only Ana Chofi would give up the sauce, er elixir, and start fighting back. I've been thinking that Dona Mati knows a lot more about the El Editorial, then the familia gives her credit for. If only Ana Chofi could be the mouthpiece for Dona Mati, so to speak, they might have Ahole quaking in his little Napoleonic boots! Ya, know threaten him a bit, bite back at Vilma.

Madelaine, we know don Chuy would never agree to her getting back with Alejo but if her whole family is at stake, I think she would just do it. Ths whole plot line with Alejo could be considered a cautionary tale how one bad decision in your youth can have life changing impacts you cannot imagine even years later. Unfortunately that is so true to real life.

Great title for this episode!

who would have thought Ana Sofia would ever attempt to clean their penthouse? That scene with her attempting to clean was too funny!

It was great to finally see Leo looking for a job. I liked some of the suggestions Diego had like working as an interior decorator or organizing dances for quinceañeras. But driving a microbus? or custodial jobs? I must agree with Leo that he is too 'pretty' for those jobs, LOL.

I can't imagine that Lupita will actually go to bed with Ahole (his injury is a good excuse), but she might be bullied into marrying, regardless. If MA can't get in touch with her, he may assume the worst. (Of the situation, I mean. Not of Lupita.)

It would be a civil ceremony only, so she'd still be able to have a church wedding with MA later. And of course she can't marry Ahole unless Vilma gets Mini to sign the divorce. But if Mini thinks the divorce will put Lupita with Ahole and free MA to be with her, she might not mind signing it. Especially since Ahole will be motivated to give her a very generous settlement.

Part of my brain is dreading this, if it's what ends up happening. But another part of my brain is saying that Lupita will make this experience really unpleasant for Ahole, so maybe it won't be so bad.

Now, AS wanting to clean up? I don't think that's sincere at all. Mostly she just wants to find her bottle, I think. But she's going to have to do something useful, and do it well, AND ENJOY IT, before this TN is over. I wouldn't have figured her for a housekeeper, but maybe that turns out to be her true calling. It's got to be safer for her than bartending. :-)

AS would make an excellent head housekeeper at an upscale hotel (of course, it would have to be out of town so no one would recognize her) - she certainly knows what the rich folk expect and she would be great at ordering her staff around.

Perla. Ivette. You had ONE job to do.

It was funny watching her model, though, especially the reactions of everyone watching her.

Fantastic recap and great title. Who would ever have thought we would see any of those things?

Great suggestion for a job for AS. I couldn't think of anything she would be competent at, but yes, being in charge of other service staff for rich people would be perfect for her as long as she could remember that they weren't all there to serve HER.

Leo shouldn't have been quite so quick to dismiss Diego's idea of being a decorator. Presumably if someone is hiring a decorator, even in La Nopalera, they are going for a look other than Assorted Acquired Knick-knackery. He might have found someone who appreciated his style. Although he should change his pants before he tries to sell anyone on his style. Those tight burgundy pants look like some yoga pants with pockets that I have.

I still think Leo should be a salesperson, either in a clothing boutique or in an art gallery. He needs to get serious about finding something, though, with MA not able to support them anymore.

Did Minerva steal MA's clothes, hoping that the red satin jammies would keep him from leaving?

yeah AS trying to 'clean' was awesome...
MA is wearing silk pajamas. (Ahole's?) ... yeah i thought the same thing. whose are those??

Mini's had breakfast delivered, but accidentally drops half of it out the open window (I don't think this was scripted!). that's how i saw that too.

Funny how A-hole kept repeating Perla's slang (no man-ches!) to himself like trying to make sense of that... and then same when she referred to him as 'manito' and he looked at his hand and flipped it over trying to figure it out...

yes, things are looking pretty gloomy for MA and Lupe if Ahole and Mini manage to get Lupe to 'marry' Ahole. and surely Emiliano will be all for it, making it harder on her.

About the possibility of Lupita being forced to marry Alejo. I've always thought that this could come about if Alejo gets Miguel Angel in his grip and offers Lupita the option of not sending MA to jail if she marries him.

Salvador, i have been thinking the same thing for quite a while, ever since Lupita accepted to have a relationship with MA before the trip... that is her aquiles heel, IMO. That and having her family lose their home.

Sales would be a great job for Leo, yes. But that might require him to work outside La Nopalera, and I think (?) he's still trying to keep a low profile. Really does not want to run into anyone he knows from his old life!

The main appeal of teaching art, though, is that he's already done it. Leo is extremely reluctant to go outside his comfort zone.

As for AS, I don't want her to be the head of anything until she's gotten her hands dirty. She has to at least scrub a couple of toilets and change some strangers' bedsheets without complaining. THEN she can be the boss of someone else!

I'm sure Emi would be happy for his mother to marry Ahole, but she's not very good at hiding her feelings from Emi. It wouldn't be long before he'd figure out something was wrong, especially if he hears Ahole bad-mouthing MA. And he'd miss Mati and MA.

Yowza, how is this thing going to work out? Ahole is so close to finding out everything, it's unbearable! (Almost!)

Julie, thanks for this excellent recap and your forecast of doom!

"Leo and Diego are on a not-date. Leo has an Ice cream and Diego has a Popsicle." The tentative progress of this relationship is worth watching.

Of course Perla Ivette couldn't resist the photo shoot. She was funny in trying to follow directions: "He urges her to to be fresh, natural, innocent, yet daring and ferocious." Who knows, maybe someone will end up liking her look.

Tizoc nailed this one, IMO: "He feels like a pet that she shows off to her friends and then hides at home."

Don Chuy finally seeing the light that is Carmelita: "Chuy suggests that they go out for a "cafecito" someday. Carmelita is so pleased..." Maybe we'll see progress here.

Alejo isn't nearly as brilliant as he thinks, but he does have a degree of low cunning as he manipulates Perla. Yeah, she's easy to manipulte, but he knows exactly how to set her up. Let's see, he sorta owns her and Emi now. More pressure for Lupita.

AS with her cleaning attempts? Funny, but probably faking it underneath. I've seen my kids and other people deliberately doing something so badly that I'll give up on them.

Pobre de MA--a prisoner, not in an orange jumpsuit, but red satin pajamas!

Ana Sofia will probably have to fall a LOT lower before she will actually make an effort to work to support herself. I don't think she'd be willing to do actual work until she runs out of things to sell and can't coerce anyone into taking care of her, and I think any of her kids would provide for her if they had any means at all, so I'm not sure we'll ever see her completely humbled and toiling with the masses.

I wish that Lupe or Don Chuy would tell Mati what's going on with the contract for the house. I think she is a lot smarter and more aware of things than everyone thinks - and I'd like to hear what she thinks of this effort to keep the house sale from going through. She might even have some suggestions to offer.
