Qué Pobres, LUNES 6/2/14 (#105): Ana Sofia’s Purple Haze

MA confronts Alejo (Ahole) in the office parking garage, asking Alejo how many more crimes he's going to accuse him of/frame him for, stealing all of his family's money. Ahole plays dumb, urges MA to turn himself in, and asks, "Are you going to kill me like you killed Adolfo?"

MA doesn't want Ahole to harm any of the people he cares about. Ahole pounces on this, accusing MA of fooling around with Minerva, which confuses MA because he doesn't know that Ahole thinks MA is Mini's secret lover. MA says Ahole resents him because Grandfather always liked MA best. Grandpa sent MA away because he didn't want him to become a vulture like Ahole.

MA catches Ahole trying to work his cellphone behind his back and tries to take it away from him. They come to blows. The fight sets off a car alarm, and MA flees.

Ahole returns to the office and uses his bruises to persuade the new police detective to hurry up with the homicide case against MA. MA threatened his life, Ahole claims. The detective is confused; he thought the RP company wanted them to handle this discreetly? Ahole says it's too risky. MA is too dangerous! Please catch him now! The detective tells him to calm down. They still haven't completed the ballistics analysis and they won't charge MA until they're sure.

With the discovery that their agent is distantly related to their bandmate Pelambres (is that really his name or just a nickname?), everyone in Tizoc's band (especially Vanessa) tries to become that Pelambre's best friend, and now Tizoc feels like chopped liver. He tries to get the agent to get them a contract right away, but the agent advises, "Calm down! One step at a time!" The suck-uppy bandmates echo the agent, "Calm down, Tizoc!" Tizoc feels cheap and is openly sour with his bandmates. But that doesn't stop him from bragging a lot of nonsense to Frida when he gets home; within months, Tizoc says, he'll be able to move his family into a much bigger house in a better neighborhood, and the RPs will still be stuck in La Nopalera.

Saul is horrified that MA confronted Ahole and urges him to "calm down." (It's a running theme in this episode.) He mustn't let his desperation get the better of him; he'll slip up and be caught.

AS wakes with the worst hangover of all time. In her groggy state, she thinks her kids have left her a card for her saint's day, but the car is actually the instructions for the pills Leo brought her. "Option A: If you have a headache, take 2. Option B: If you don't have a headache, DON'T TAKE ANY PILLS." (The assumption being, I believe, that if she doesn't have a headache, she's still drinking and shouldn't take the pills with alcohol.)

Well, she does have a headache, so she takes two pills and washes them down with the only liquid at hand: the last of her booze from the wedding. She's still thirsty, and grumbles that there's no one around to fetch her a glass of water.

As AS approaches the kitchen, she overhears the Menchacas planning a big fiesta in honor of a saint. In her excitement, she fails to notice that the fiesta they're planning is not for HER saint, but for a miracle-working saint. They're going to ask him to help with the neighborhood's problems.

She runs upstairs and tells Leo all about it. She is getting loopier by the moment as the pills and booze combine in her brain (and liver) to produce delusions of fuzzy, rose-colored grandeur. Leo thinks she must be trippin'. She goes on and on: the poor people of the barrio really are so, like, decent and thoughtful in spite of everything, you know? They're peasants, but they're so good to her, she says.

Later, AS sees the fonda all decked out in purple - her favorite color (she's in a purple dress). "My people love me so much!" She rehearses a grand entrance. (All I need now is a lava lamp and a velvet painting of Vicente Fernandez and an ultraviolet strobe light!)

Lupita is displeased with MA for fighting with Ahole. Chuy at first seems to disapprove as well: despite his wrestling career, he's opposed to solving problems with violence. But... "Did you really wallop that guy? Cool! I've been wanting to smack him up for years." Chuy and Lupita ask MA to help them transport the saint. MA thinks he's going to pick him up at the airport.

Mini and Isela set off a fire alarm at the office and steal Vilma's laptop. They take it to a hacker (not a hucker or a Houston or a hamster) who says it's going to be expensive.

Ahole goes to Emiliano's school, where the teacher and principal tell him they can't let him see Emiliano without his mother's permission. Ahole pretends to be deeply concerned and respectful of the rules, but makes sure that Emi sees him and comes running to him. Ahole asks Emi to convince his mother that he (Emi) won't be happy unless he can live with his father, so she has to marry him. Ahole says he'll keep buying him toys to play with at his house. If Lupita doesn't want to marry him, Ahole says, it's just because she's afraid to leave the house where she grew up.

The teachers do inform Lupita, and she chews Ahole out when she gets to the school; he pretends to be innocent and bewildered and tells her to CALM DOWN. From their disapproving looks, it seems that the teacher and principal are siding with Ahole. Later, he gloats to Vilma that he's wearing Lupita down.

At the prepa, Frida is teased without mercy for being a non-Countess and on scholarship. Nice kids. She walks out of the classroom. Later, Tato seems to stick up for her - until she says she still has some class. Then Tato says no, you have no class at all!

MA meets with Saul and Tomas and tries to get them to work together as a team. They rehash: MA hasn't been formally charged yet, but he is the prime suspect in Adolfo's murder. Tom says, "It's dark just before the sun comes out." (It's darkest just before dawn!)

Vilma breaks the bad news to Ahole about her stolen laptop. She assures him that in the unlikely event that the laptop is hacked, it won't provide any useful evidence against him because stolen evidence can't be used in court. Disgusted, Alejo says he should have Vilma draft her own termination notice right now. He rants and raves about her incompetence and actually makes her cry.

A procession in honor of the saint wends its way through La Nopalera. MA is indeed helping to transport the saint - he's carrying the back end of a very heavy float. Eventually they reach the fonda, where the saint is honored with song and prayer and LOTS of purple.

AS hears the revelry and tells Leo she doesn't want to let "her people" down. Leo tells her to stay there while he checks out the scene. MA and Mati explain it to him, but AS doesn't wait: she staggers to the loft/balcony/whatchamacallit overlooking the fonda to make her grand entrance. "Hey, don't cry for me, Mexico! Wheeeeeeeee! My little bronze people, my Mexico, my peasants of Nopalera!" Everyone stares as she gibbers incoherent, egotistical rubbish. She's very unsteady on her feet, and she's in prime position to topple off the balcony or maybe drop DaVinci.

Ahole is at home when Mini and Isela return from the hacker's. He asks, if you've been out shopping, where are your shopping bags? And by the way, he saw MA. Mother and daughter don't even try to keep up the charade. They tell him they've got plenty of evidence against him for money laundering with Bambi, framing MA for fraud, and killing Adolfo.

Ahole says the only ones who are going to jail are MA and Mini, and they won't even get to conjugal visits. Isela and/or Mini say nope, because now they have Vilma's laptop! Ahole and Mini try to strangle one another. Isela pushes them apart. Can somebody explain what her ring is supposed to be? A spider? A pompom? One of those rubbery wiggle toys?

After Mini goes into the house, Isela offers to give Ahole all of the evidence they have on him if he'll just grant Mini everything she asks for in the divorce. Nothing doing, Ahole says. Isela sweetens the deal: she knows where MA is, too.

Next Time: MA makes the papers! That's gonna harsh AS's mellow big time.

Oh!! I'm so annoyed with myself that I didn't think of the obvious and much better title: PURPLE HAZE!!

Julie:

You can change the title any time you want! Recapper's privilege so to speak : )

I will comment more after your recap I can hardly wait to get your take on it ; )

Yeah, I changed the title. It doesn't change the URL, alas. But I had to change it anyway because it's not actually her birthday, but her saint's day.

Recap will be up in a bit.

"All I need now is a lava lamp and a velvet painting of Vicente Fernandez"!!!!!! So funny I am looking forward to the rest!

Jarifa

Done!

Now that I think of it, maybe it's her birthday AND saint's day. It's definitely her saint's day, though.

Jarifa, I upgraded the psychedelic decor a bit with an ultraviolet strobe light. Seizures for everyone!

Julie, thanks for another good laugh with "seizures for everyone!" and another great recap.

Before commenting on the episode I have to mention how much I am enjoying the performances of Sylvia Pasquel as well as Ingrid Martz and Raquel Pankowsky.. They really hit the jackpot when they cast these three.

I loved seeing the procession for San Ciprianito ( Saint Ciprian). His saint day is September 16 so at least we know what date it is. Poor MA having to carry the back of the platform with the statue of San Ciprian all by himself. They are all singing "San Ciprianito eres rey de la Nopalera". (Saint Ciprian you are the king of the Nopalera) with MA adding his "San Ciprianito, como pesas" (San Ciprian, how heavy you are.) just a bit off key, too. It was so funny but so good seeing MA a part of the family and neighborhood.

What can we say about AS drugged out of her mind with her "Evita" imitation? I wonder if poor Da Vinci was freaked out with her staggering all over while holding him.

I also enjoyed Lupita's reaction to MA confronting Alejo. He sure deserved the slaps for being careless. Best of all was don Chuy first chiding MA but then enjoying the fact that MA landed a few good hits. I also liked when MA asked don Chuy if he could "acercarse a su calor" but the answer was still no.

Looks like Isela is ready to wheel and deal in order to insure her future finances via Alejo and the divorce settlement.

Saul's hair was back to normal.

Jarifa

Thanks for the recap Julie!
I thought the same thing at the school scene... if Lupe had told them not to let A-hole get to see Emiliano, let alone ALONE, why did the teachers BOTH walk away to call Lupe and take their time to get back? why don't they see through A-hole's gimmicks if they are right there standing behind Emiliano?? Lupe should find another school for him... sometimes it is not about standing up for yourself when you are humble trying to get your kid to go to a school where more wealthy kids go to, it could harm him more than be benneficial...

Anyway, LOVED when the hacker told Mini and Isela that it would turn out 'carinosito' (expensive, well, not quite, carito would be expensive but carinosito is literally sweet/caressing)

Also at the procession they left MA carrying the whole back side of the statue of the Saint and while they all were singing to San Ciprianito to welcome him to La Nopalera, MA was repeating a refrain 'como pesas' (you are sooo heavy!)... LOL!

at prepa... 'Nice kids.' is right!

Jarifa, we were posting same comment at same time... about the procession and MA's version of the refrain.

Marta, all I can say is " two great minds, one great thought!" That is so funny!

Jarifa

Julie:

Thanks so much for this awesome recap : ) I liked the whole purple theme from the title to the purple strobe light, so funny.

Ahole is such a putz! I really liked MA giving him the bidnez. Don Chuy was funny too sticking up for MA at the end and Lupe, making all MA's bruises hurt all over again.

If I were Frida, I'd find a way to switch schools, where no one knows her. All those kids ganging up on her, the poor thing. I feel bad for her.

Tizoc is getting a big head. I hope he heeds Frida's advice.

That procession was very cool, and MA was a riot! I've seen guys in Italy, six of them, put the Saint's statue platform on their shoulders as they walk in procession.

I guess Isela is gonna be helping Ahole out, but maybe she'll lead him down the garden path. I'm hoping she does.

Oh, and I liked the detective's answer to Ahole, they haven't finished the ballistics yet, on the bullets that killed Adolfo. Ahole should be shaking in his boots, cause the majority of those bullets came from his gun.

AS was too funny all through this epi and the "Evita" theme, too funny. I liked Leo all through this epi, he really does take care of AS.

Thanks again Julie for this awesome recap : )

Mads, Leo really does deserve some kind of bonus for showing more concern for his mother than she does for him. I'm surprised she isn't blaming this whole mess on him for getting involved with a fake countess. Maybe she will when she sobers up!

Jarifa, this episode aired April 4, so is it possible that this is a different San Ciprianito? I think they called him San Ciprianito de Tule, but Google isn't finding me a Tule-specific saint.

Juarever.

I didn't even notice that Saul's hair was back to normal. Hmm. Does Gwendy know about this? Did she do it?

Marta, I agree about the schooling issue. Emiliano will be dealing with shallow, materialistic jerks his entire life. Being overexposed to them in childhood doesn't benefit him at all, and is a distraction when he should be learning. Lupita's spending and arm and a leg on his education; is this what she wants him to learn?

On the other hand, I don't know what other options are available to Lupita, but I'd guess they're limited.

Julie, as far as I know, there is only one St. Ciprian so maybe they didn't bother to coordinate the holiday with the airplay of the episode.

A bit of trivia: from what I have read there was no planned extension of this novela. How good is that for fans of good writing? As a matter of fact they finished filming about 3 weeks ago. So, it is all in the can so to speak. :)

Seeing the unexpected pregnancy rear its ugly head one more time as a plot device on LQLVMR, do any of you think that we will see one here? Will Lupita have a baby and save the day? Not a spoiler, just wondering because I have never seen a novela that has not had the "whoopsie pregnancy".

Jarifa

so if this episode aired Apr 4 and they finished filming 3 wks ago, how close are they to the finale in Mex? do we still have at least 2 months left of QPTR?

Marta:

The last episode of QPTR airs in Mexico on June 23rd. It will end here, probably at the end of July or the first week of August depending upon any preemptions for the World Cup.

Jarifa:

Good question about the "whoopsie pregnancy". Well we have Guendy, Lupe and Frida that have done it so far. I too wonder about that ; ) I'm betting on Guendy. Wouldn't that be a hoot?

It might be Perla if she doesn't stop with her being so "ofrecida" - although at this point she only wants Diego Armando (and NO WAY is anything going to happen there), she's showing her insecurity about her weight and "model" looks, which may make her easy prey to a sleazy "casting director" or "talent agent" who will say the right things to her.

Marta, I think there are 160 episodes total. So we have 55 left. As Madelaine mentioned the Mexican finale is on June 23 and then "Mi Corazon eres tu" starts on June 30. I hope we don't have any preemptions with the World Cup. I had not thought about that. :(

Oh, I really hope Vilma wakes up and smells the coffee and starts working against Ahole. She has had so many verbal beat downs from this putz and his constant, he's marrying Lupe to get what he wants. Enough already! Vilma has the goods on him and should accidently on purpose expose that gun for a start!

the last post was from me.

Jarifa

Marta:

Please check your email. I sent you some info on "Mi Corazon Es Tuyo".

Madelaine, Guendy getting pregnant would be a hoot. Lupita would also be okay by helping to fulfill the "grandfather clause" because she is going to end up with MA anyway. Anonymous 1:01, your are so right about Perla being "ripe for the picking" with her desire to model. I would really not like to see her or Frida end up pregnant because they are both so young. Of course, either of them ending up pregnant would set them as the bad example in a precautionary way. I hope we don't go there with the young ones. Maybe they will surprise us and nobody will be the victim of the "whoopsie pregnancy". Sure. :)

Jarifa

Thanks so much for your recap Julie and I liked your title too.

Jarifa, good call on the "whoopsie pregnancy." I would like to think that Lupe already had the one but you are probably right about another looming on the horizon.

Mads, ITA and yes about Vilma. She needs to use her brain and realize how mean Alejo is to her all the time.

you guys are right about Vilma... but it is hard for someone to see when you are in her shoes...
it is much easier to see the abuse from an observer 3rd party. She doesn't have anyone to witness that abuse (other than Saul making derrogatory comments to her about it and Adolfo, but he can't help her anymore). She is what we can call a masochist woman in love, she is willing to stand by her man no matter what, even if he asks her to jump off a cliff... she will do it (or will she?, maybe she has a surprise in store for us when we least expect it, or when the truth about who killed Adolfo comes out). I am still holding up to hopes for her character to come up to the surface and rip off the blindfold.

Thanks Julie, I forgot to set up the recorder so I had to have this recap today.

I can't believe that Isela is selling out MA and basically Minnie too. I might hate her more than AS now. Telling Alejo that they stole Vilma's computer and took it to a hacker was the lowest and stupidest move she could do.

Vilma will turn against Alejo if, and hopefully when, she learns that he killed Adolfo. I hope that moment is soon.

So if this episode aired on April 4th, then we are basically 2 months behind. Therefore, if the ending will be on June 23rd, then our ending will be 2 months from then, around August 23rd, unless we are delayed by soccer.

Jarifa, thanks for the info on the no planned extension. I am grateful. It just seems odd because the story feels as though it's close to wrapping up.

I would be thrilled if the board of directors/zombies agreed that nobody "won" the grandfather clause, but unanimously agreed to put MA at the head of the company anyway. That way, even if Lupita does have a baby, it won't figure into whether or not MA gets the company.

Mads, I think Vilma's loyalty is beginning to erode. It didn't used to hurt her so much when Ahole insulted her.

Yes, it would be hard for her to see how much Ahole abuses her, except for one thing: her week with Adolfo. Now that she's had a taste of what a healthier relationship might be like, I think it's finally dawning on her that she can do way better than Ahole.

Cathyx, I desperately hope that Isela is just setting a trap for Ahole, but that doesn't seem likely, does it? Her loyalty has always belonged to the guy with the most money.

AS had her chance to sell MA to Ahole before the stakes were even this high, and she didn't take it. Since there were extenuating circumstances (wanting to avoid family scandal for the sake of the Countess wedding), I can't swear that she was being totally selfless, but Isela doesn't have even that much pride. (I am thinking more about how this will upset Minerva than how it will affect MA.) Very disappointing.

Hola, y'all. I haven't had a chance to watch yet, but of course had to read the recap. Fantastic! I'm looking forward to AS's "party". Tangerine trees and marmalade skies?

I'm not sure the editorial will survive Ahole's pillaging and Minerva's editing for there to be much left to win in the baby stakes. In a way, it might be nice for the Ruizpalacios (and Lupita, when she's happily ever after with MA) to build up new wealth on their own or from the ashes of the editorial, rather than having it all handed back over.

We will almost definitely have pre-emptions for world cup matches. Possibly a bunch of days without our novela. I wonder if the 10:00 time helps us in that regard. Probably not; they seem to always scramble the whole schedule when games are on.

I hope we don't have oopsie surprise pregnancy stories. I'm most concerned about Frida, because she and Tizoc have rolled in the hay a few times and I'm not sure how careful they're being. Lupita, I hope not. Not until MA's situation is straightened out and they are stable and ready for a baby. Guendy, maybe? Although she seems to not have gotten pregnant the one time with Nepo, and now she seems to be holding out for him but he's being a tool so probably not anytime soon. Perla could be the unlucky winner if someone turns her head in her pursuit of a modeling career. Currently, she's only into DA (no way), and Tomas likes her, but she isn't interested in him and I think he'd be super responsible anyway.

Purple Haze!! Loved the title, loved the summary. Thanks, Julie. And that was the best drunken acting I've ever seen! Very realistic! She's great (actor who plays AS) - shame on me for not looking up her name. There are so many great character actors on this show.

Julia, the tangerine trees and marmalade skies would have to be purple. (Purple tangerines? I'd eat 'em!)

Perla had better not get knocked up, after lecturing Tizoc on the importance of always wearing a mask to wrestle!

Julie, a great recap with a prize-winning title!
Sylvia P./AS turned in a tremendous performance in this epi. I was laughing so hard I was afraid of waking sleeping hubby in the back of the house.
The extra dimension of AS dropping the snotty attitude and "appreciating" her humble public's tribute was too much. And never noticing she still had her sleep mask on. At least Leo removed it.
Vilma was also excellent in turning off her tears each time Ahole asked "you're not crying, are you?"
Ahole is so skilled at his smarmy persuasion to the school personnel. Also enjoyed Don Chuy's delight at MA's beat down of Ahole.
Such a great cast working as a team. Love this show.

Maybe Frida and Emiliano can search for a new all-grades school and apply for scholarships there together. The message of this show seems to be that "good" schools are a nightmare.

Late as usual. I have to wait till I get home to post.

Madelaine, I saw your post addressed to me. To answer your question, I envision Mini getting together with Alejo… oh wait! That already happened! I would predict sparks and lots of passion, but this has already happened too. I don’t think it can get any more sparkier than yesterday’s emotional and passionate embrace. I have to admit that I had never seen the Simpson chokehold done in a live action TV program.

MA’s confrontation with Alejo had no purpose, except to blow off steam and have Alejo become a therapeutic punching bag for MA. I think MA only made matters worse and as was seen in the previews for today (June 3) it looks like the confrontation only led to the business being made public.

I am sure the RP Editorial board will have a field day when they find that the RP name is now being dragged around. They wanted to keep this matter quit to avoid shaming the RP name, but this is somewhat difficult to do with Alejo running around doing every he can to sink the RP ship.

Ana Sophi is now an official mess. It looks like As is going to take a tumble any second now. I just hope they have a stunt double for Da Vinci. But even in her current state she can’t stop demeaning everyone around her. I am just glad that she finished off the gin bottle and will have to come down and face reality, assuming that she can still do this in her current state of mind. At this time it would be just horrible for some one to provide her with more elixir.

Personally I am glad that Fri got badly treated by her classmates. She has been living in a bubble where she thinks that keeping up the appearances will help her keep her friends. Now she can plainly see that those people are not her friends. Once she understands this her granma’s advice will sink in and she will be able to make adjustments in her outlook to just drop those people who are dead weights and be able to see who will stand by her.

I totally disliked the way Isela treated the computer hamster, err, I mean hacker. Being him I would have thrown the computer in their face. Isela and Mini are cheap money and low class and is evident by how they interact with others.

Waiting for gun ballistics? Exactly how could this help or harm MA? A note: Someone mentioned that Alejo had fired his own gun multiple times, but this is not really correct. Alejo shot Giron once with his gun and then used the second gun to repeatedly shoot Giron.

Still, even if the ballistics analysis proves that two guns were used, they can’t tie Alejo to either, except, maybe… In theory any gunshot wound needs to be reported to the authorities. When Alejo shot his own babies and was treated at the hospital it should have been procedure to report the incident to the police, but none of this was shown. I don’t even know if the police were notified, or whether they kept any kind of ballistics record. This is assuming that they had a bullet to begin with, because the gun went off while Alejo had it holstered in his pants, so there is a chance that his wound was from the burn and so much because a bullet entered his body. But then again, I am now speculating here.

to be continued...

The character of the episode was Leo. He actually acted human and genuinely concerned. His actions were so that for a second I asked whether he had been replaced by a clone. I hope the story evolves this character in a good way. He really needs to get away from his mom’s influence and bigotry.

Julie, you mentioned that the band members were sucking up to the manager’s newly found cousin. I get the names mixed up, so I’ll just avoid them altogether. Perhaps I missed this cue because I saw it another way. The band members were happy for their friend to have found family and that he came from a wealthy family, but I saw jealousy in Tizoc and felt that it was Tizoc that pushed the band members away. From what I perceived Tizoc was not happy that his friend found family and was from a rich family. It seems that throughout the story Tizoc has always had a certain aversion towards rich people.

Of course, this is just my perception and I may be wrong.

Sorry to be chiming in so late! Julie- Excellent recap!

Salvador- I read the scene with Tizoc the same way you did. The only one I saw sucking up was the girl.

Thanks Julie, this is, of course, excellent. Great job. I've not quite finished watching last night's episode but I wanted to go ahead and say thanks and respond to Salvador.

Ballistic analysis can show that the fatal single shot came from Alejo's gun which he still has in his possession, I believe. The shots from MA's pistol were apparently all delivered post-mortem. This can be easily determined at autopsy. I can see where that could prove to be part of Alejo's undoing.

Now I must get back to LQLVMR.

Carlos

Carlos, that is how i saw it. Adolfo was upright when he got the first shot from Alejo's gun. when Alejo emptied the other gun on Adolfo, all those shots came at an angle, and like you said, the autopsy can prove which one was the fatal/first one. I believe the gun in question (Alejo's) is the one that Vilma has in her apartment drawer. maybe she can use it against him if she ever finds out for sure he killed Adolfo.

and that is one reason I like that the case is now in the hands of the new police cop (anyone know the name yet?) played by Adalberto Parra, even though i can totally shake off how evil he was as Capitan Espindola in CS'93. But I have high hopes that he will be very fair and straight (if not straight an ally) with MA. I would not be surprised he becomes a sort of guardian/sponsor of MA if he ends up in jail, kind of Mark Tacher's character in Mariachi with Daniel Lugo as Comandante Salas.
