Qué Pobres, Lunes 7/7/14 (#130): The TAY* of the Hurricane

*It's pronounced "tie"

It's the pause in the middle of the storm that makes you think everything's back to normal and it's safe to go outside. Then the wind whips up again and you get zapped by a loose power line.

Here is the condensed version. Discuss:

- Even though Lupita claims to be disappointed in MA, Carmelita notices she hasn't taken off her ring yet. Lupita gives her blessing to Carmelita's relationship with Chuy.

- Gwendy figures out that Nepo is embarrassed to be seen with her in public, especially around the Menchacas, because he doesn't think she's as classy as Lupita. She fights with him for being a coward and goes home in tears.

- Chuy picks up Carmelita for their date, but they are so awkward and nervous that it's almost a relief when Gwendy shows up distraught before they can leave Carm's place. Chuy goes home alone, and Carmelita tries to comfort Gwendy.

- We catch a glimpse of Mini's father in a large portrait on the wall. I'm sure there's a joke there. Is this an actor we should recognize? A relative of one of the actors? The director?

- Tomas comes to the house to see Perla, but she's not home. He mentions MA's letter to Lupe; he says he gave it to Emi. Emi overhears and when Lupe comes up to ask him about it, he pretends to be too sleepy to remember much about it. He says he left it somewhere in her bedroom.

- Also, Tom tells Lupe he's going to see Saul to find out the verdict because his phone's battery ran down.

- Cellmates warn MA that if you try to "surprise" your family with your release from prison, you might end up being the person who is most surprised. That's how Cellmate #1 ended up back in prison: when he got out the last time, he found his best friend with "guess who" (his wife) and killed him.

- Mini warns Isela that if she (Isela) doesn't hold up her end of their deal, she won't have access to any of the property Mini's getting in the divorce. Later, Ahole warns that if MINI doesn't hold up her end of the deal, she won't get anything in the divorce.

- Leo and Frida notice that the crowd at Tizoc's debut concert is more "diverse" (fresa) than they would have expected. A big sign says "TAY" (pronounced "tie") and Tizoc is wearing a sparkly jacket and lots of makeup, like an undead Duran Duran tribute band. There's confetti. His voice is electronically sweetened and the style is bland, generic pop. Girls (possibly paid by the producer) are screaming like he's the Beatles. Perla, Leo, and Diego all think it's fine. Frida does not. She is especially annoyed that all the fresa girls just adore him. Tay's manager keeps interrupting whenever Tay speaks, especially when he wants to talk about La Nopalera. People ask if he has a girlfriend; who's the song about? "It's about my fans!" Ugh.

- Leo and Diego are envious of the hetero couples around them who can do PDA without being harrassed. Maybe someday, they hope. They hold hands briefly but then separate when someone almost looks at them.

- Chuy catches AS rummaging through the kitchen for alcohol. He shares a big bottle of pulque with her. She doesn't like it at first, but boozers can't be choozers, so she acquires the taste and they tie one on, big time. (At one point, he spits on the floor.) Chuy tells a joke about a cherry and a mirror (I don't get it), and asks why she isn't happy. She says it's because she has "niente." Chuy's like, whaaaat? But you have your children! AS beckons him closer, "I'm going to tell you a secret..."

- On Ahole's advice, Vilma hides out in a hotel. Meanwhile, Ahole tells the Board of Zombies that Vilma did all the crimes, and innocent MA is like the brother Ahole never had.

Vilma's assets are frozen. Ahole scolds her, "I told you to be more careful," but promise, "I won't leave you to blind luck." Vilma reminds Ahole that the gun that was seized is the one he had the day Adolfo was killed, which is also the gun he shot himself in the nuts with. (Will he find a way to blame her for that? And how long will it take her to figure out that he shot Adolfo??)

Vilma says, "If I go down, I'll take you down with me!" but then quickly backpedals and begs him to run away with her. He rejects the idea (but leaves her with a crumb of hope) and tells her to sit tight.

Later, Ahole decides to tell Agent Chavez where Vilma is hiding. But is he telling the truth?

Next Time: MA gets out of prison. Mini picks him up. Isela chloroforms him. My question is, where are the TV people getting all of this chloroform?

More recap early tomorrow if I have time, because unfortunately I have another morning appointment and then a long day.

I don't have a lot more in my notes anyway, but there were a few bits I didn't want to leave out. You won't hurt my feelings if you mention them first. :-)

Julie, thanks, for the great recap. You hit all of the highlights.

Don Chuy's joke was a play on how words sound: Una cereza está caminando y se para frente a un espejo y se dice "ay, ¿seré esa? ( A cherry is walking along and stops in front of a mirror and says to itself " Oh, is that me?") The joke is that "cereza" and "seré esa" sound the same.

My favorite scene was AS and Chuy with the pulque. I loved how quickly AS developed the taste for pulque but as Julie said "boozers can't be choozers."

Nepo was a jerk one more time being ashamed to be seen with Güendy. I hope she makes him pay big time if he decides to get back with her.

Diego and Leonardo were interesting talking about being envious that gays are not able to freely show affection in public and then holding hands for what seemed like a fleeting second.

Looks like Vilma will be paying big time for Alejo's crimes----if he has his way.

I was happy that Lupe found out about MA's letter and may start realizing that Emiliano is not as trustworthy as she thinks.

Looks like don Chuy and Carmelita are a done deal even with them not getting out for their date.

Jarifa

Better wording: Diego and Leonardo were interesting talking about being envious of heterosexual couples and about gays not being able to show affection freely in public.

Jarifa

Another little bit on Diego and Leo... before they headed out to the club, Diego came to pick up Leo, Leo started saying that he was used to going to Madonna and Lady Gaga concerts and being in the 'balconies' away from the naco crowd. Diego smirked and asked him if he was going to start acting all nosed-up (uppidy for being 'high-society')again, and Leo snapped out of it and said of course i am going!... I forgot the wording Diego used to describe Leo's attitude at first.

Thank you for the recap, Julie.

I think the only thing missing is that Carmelita told Lupe about the date and Lupe happily said "finally you decided to come out with it". She was happy for Carm!

I'm so annoyed Emi got to hear Tomás and Lupe talking about the letter. It gives him time to come up with a bunch of lies. I doubt he'll sell his dirtbag daddy out.

Oh, Tizoc, what have you done? I hope Frida knocks some sense into him.

Ahole has screwed himself over by doing this to Vilma. She has all the dirt on him and will realize he murdered Adolfo soon enough.

Nepo doesn't deserve Güendy.

Anonymous, I could not agree with you more on the last two statements.
A-hole has opened a huge can of worms by betraying Vilma like that. And Nepo deserves misery. Gwendy should run far far away from him.

This comment has been removed by the author.

also, i would not put it past A-hole to have given Mini/Isela bad documents and really has not given them any property, but will keep them in the dark until Lupe marries him.

Julie- Great mini-recap. No need to come back and fill in.

The Tay concert was hilarious. "Tay" is just as bad at lip syncing as many of our current real life pop stars. I can't believe Perla, Diego and Leo were grooving along like it was great. That cell phone song was insipid, and Tizoc's Michael Jackson styling was ridiculous.

Marta- I think many episodes ago, Alejo said to Vilma that the house isn't his to give anyway, because it belongs to the company. So yea, I think he's duping Mini.

Thanks for explaining the cherry joke, Jarifa!

And thanks Marta for fleshing out the talk between Diego and Leo before the concert. Yes, Diego was unhappy that Leo was planning to mock the concert, but Leo said he couldn't change overnight (they've had this convo before) and Leo said "I'm trying, baby!" and "of course que yeah we're going."

I left out that both Chuy and Carmelita specifically asked Lupe's blessing to go on their date. Of course she couldn't be happier.

I also left out (but will add back) some more stuff about Vilma and Ahole:

- Vilma's assets are frozen.
- Ahole scolds her, "I told you to be more careful," but promise, "I won't leave you to blind luck."
- Vilma reminds Ahole that the gun that was seized is the one he had the day Adolfo was killed, which is also the gun he shot himself in the nuts with. (Will he find a way to blame her for that?)
- Vilma says, "If I go down, I'll take you down with me!" but then quickly backpedals and begs him to run away with her. He rejects the idea (but leaves her with a crumb of hope) and tells her to sit tight.

Julie, thanks for:
"If I go down, I'll take you down with me!"
I knew Vilma had said something and then backpedalled instantly, but i was not sure what she said... geez! if she only had the backbone to back that line off.

Thanks Julie, this episode really moved things along, I think.
I hope Lupita finds out what happened to the letter that MA wrote to her.
I hope that Vilma realizes that Alejo is the only person who knows where she is, so when the cops come and get her, she'll know he turned her in. And then I hope she squeals like a pig.

I didn't recognize Tizoc at all. I Hate to say this, but I prefer his new look over his old look.
What a jerk again about Nepo. I can foresee a serenade to Gwendy in front of everyone to show how sorry he is.
I can't believe Don Chuy keeps giving alcohol to an alcoholic.

Cathyx- I was just coming back to say how appalled I was by Don Chuy yet again giving alcohol to AS!

Thanks, Julie! Enjoyed it all, but "like an undead Duran Duran tribute band" made me laugh out loud for real.

Oy, what a concert. I think I was making the same face Frida was making, at least until I just started laughing. That was so bad, it was funny. I expected a change of styling for a stage luke, and didn't mind it all that much, but the voice autotuned into oblivion was an affront to my musical sensibilities. Plus the song was SO INANE. Even for inane pop music it was beyond stupid. And then when he denied having a novia, I wanted to pop Tizoc, perdón, TAY, in the snout on Frida's behalf. At least he still has his acrobatic skills.

I was annoyed that Chuy yet again is enabling AS's addiction. I wonder if she will actually tell him a secret.

How exactly is MA's trial result a secret, and why does he have to stay in prison all weekend after he was found innocent? I don't understand this at all. How long can it possibly take for the judge to sign some papers or whatever and for them to release him? Completely ridiculous.

It looks like MA will get what he deserves for making his family and Lupita worry longer. If only he had told them he was being released, maybe they would be there to greet him instead of devious Minerva.

Poor Guendy. She deserves better than Nepo.

So what could AS's secret be? That she was never married to her children's father? That she was poor growing up and married a rich man? It's got to be something that she would find humiliating if it got out.

She could confess that she stole the 300,000 pesos and went on a spender bender with the Menchacas' hard-earned cash.

I personally think she is not so to-the-mansion-born nor Italian as she pretends, though.

I also wonder if there is any secret or history behind her total disregard of Frida. Even Leo has blown up at her about always forgetting Frida exists.

Julia, I forgot about the secret of her stealing the money. But can she ever get drunk enough to confess that?

In Avenida Brazil the villainess adored her son and totally ignored or treated her young daughter like crap. For a while we thought it must be because the daughter’s father was a man she despised, but it wasn’t that at all. The girl and her older brother shared the same mother and father. We concluded that the mother didn’t like her simply because she was a girl. Perhaps AS’s problem with Frida is simply because Frida refuses to be a carbon copy of AS.

AS doesn't exactly treat her sons very well, either. It's a sad state of affairs when even remembering that they exist means they are more favored. I really wonder what the kids' father was like and if AS really did go downhill fast after his death or if she was always like this.

At least she doesn't have a problem with Leo being gay (aside from his insufficiently fancy choice of novio). Poor Diego and Leo looked so sad watching the other couples. I would argue that maybe we don't need quite so much of a public display from ANYONE, but ni modo. They need to find a friendlier neighborhood to hang out in.

I read recently that Rosy Ocampo filmed a kissing scene between Leo and Diego, and the big wigs at Televisa made her cut it because they were worried about public reaction. I guess if the folks who are producing a tn with a gay tolerance message can't tolerate a chaste kiss, then it's understandable why these two characters feel like they would be persecuted for expressing any bit of affection in public.

Frida was in AS' words, a rebel without a cause. She used to pull stunts that embarrassed the family and act like she wasn't like them because she preached social equality (which was easy to do when she was on top since romanticizing poverty when you're rich is easy, only to see you enjoy all your luxuries just as much as everyone else once you don't have them). And then once poor she had the nerve to drop the pretense and apply for a scholarship, much to AS' embarrassment.

Aren't the producers worried about backlash from the pro-equality community for their mixed message and homophobic practices?

I know they are probably right that there would be some conservative outrage. I just think they should tell people that if they have a problem with seeing gay people, maybe they should watch a different show anyway. Instead of this backhanded pretending to be progressive while simultaneously contributing to oppression.

Julia- Although Mexico has some of the best laws on the books that protect the rights of homosexuals, I found this info on Wikipedia:

"According to the first National Poll on Discrimination (2005) in Mexico, 48 percent of the Mexican people interviewed indicated that they would not permit a homosexual to live in their house. 95 percent of gays interviewed indicated that in Mexico there was discrimination against them; four out of ten declared they were a victim of exclusionary acts; more than half said they felt rejected; and six out of ten felt their worst enemy was society.

Between 1995 and 2005, 387 hate crimes due to homophobia were committed in Mexico (98 percent of which remain unprosecuted). Between 1995 and 2005, 126 homosexuals were murdered in Mexico City. Of those, 75 percent were reclaimed by their families. In 10 percent of the cases, families identified the victim but did not reclaim their bodies (which were buried in common graves), and the remaining 5 percent were never identified."

Wow. That is sad. I guess it's no wonder the producers feel that they have to slowly persuade people to give up the bigotry.

Not even prosecuting 98% of the hate crimes? Qué the hell?

Having the laws in place is one thing. Implementing them is another.

Thanks so much for your recap Julie. I can't believe Nepo continues to be an idiot and that Chuy gives AS some hooch. Alejo needs to go down quickly.

I do not like how Emiliano is learning to lie, but I must say he is learning from the best. Ahole actually said "I am not an idiot!" with a straight face!

The new image of "Tay" is calculated to appeal to the most diverse group possible, so it's not weird that some people like that better than Old Tizoc. What IS weird is that Tizoc isn't bristling at this. As much as he enjoys having people adore him, I thought he took too much pride in being Tizoc to enjoy being Tay.

Oh well.

I think AS's "secret" will be something that only she believes is actually a secret, like "I really am worried about Miguel Angel" or "I like tacos more than I let on." It would be nice if she'd confess to stealing the money, but I'm not sure if she even believes it in her own mind.

Julia: "I would argue that maybe we don't need quite so much of a public display from ANYONE" - I agree, in fact, but those two can hardly even sit together (much less hold hands) without people giving them ugly looks or outright harassment. If what Vivi read is true, these scenes might be Rosy Ocampo's way of protesting, "I'll stop lecturing people about the double-standard when Televisa stops upholding it."

Given that the bad reputation of Mexico's judicial system is one of the themes of this TN, Vivi's comment "Having the laws in place is one thing. Implementing them is another" is right on the money.

About Chuy sharing his jug of pulque with AS: for some reason, that didn't bother me nearly as much as when he handed her the gin at the wedding. On that occasion, it felt as though he was handing her a glass of hemlock. This time, I think he really felt like getting loaded, and he didn't want to do it alone. Which doesn't really excuse him, but AS did seem to dry out okay on her own last time and she's coming out of her depression and learning to get along with people. So this might be okay for now, maybe, as long as it doesn't become a daily thing.

Julie, thanks for another great recap.

Nepo really does need to do better by Guendy. He may live to regret his callous behavior.

Don Chuy shouldn't give AS alcohol to drink, but I did laugh at their conversation. AS was willing to drink the lowly stuff when nothing else was available. The family may be appalled if they see the results of the confab.

Tay reminded me of Adam Lambert of American Idol fame. The eye shadow was the crowning touch for his new image. I'm with Frida in liking his original stuff better, but we'll see if the public is fickle in their support.

Julie, I forgot to say I too was laughing out loud with this

"like an undead Duran Duran tribute band"
brilliant!

and Tay needs a good whipping... hated that eye shadow, made Tizoc look like he was on drugs.
Bring the old romantic genuinely happy tizoc!

I actually worried that Don Chuy and AS were going to start kissing and end up in bed, I hope that doesn't happen.

I agree, hand holding should be okay. It's just the serious groping and such that no one should be doing in public. Diego and Leo need to get richer so they can move somewhere else.

No, cathyx! NOOOOOO!!!!!!!! That would be horrible!

Julia, that would just kill Carmela and AS when she sobers up, lol.

Promoters have been known to pay girls to shriek ecstatically at concerts. But even if the screaming was for real, Tay's style is so generic that there's little risk of long-term stardom. Soon another sparkly fellow will come along, and Tay will be forgotten.

Nepo has been such a jackass for so long that I've wondered if he was being set up for a tragic end (prolly at Ahole's hands). I hope not. But consider: AS is in the process of turning the corner. You'd think if she could do it, anyone could; yet Nepo has been on the brink of free-fall for months and he doesn't seem to be getting any better. It doesn't look good.

Cathyx, I hate to admit it, but I worried about the same thing. Perhaps this is a good time for AS to confess to stealing the money after all.

Don Chuy and AS kissing? That would be enough to scare me away from this novela forever. Luckily, I have too much respect for this story to believe that it could happen. (Don Chuy? He's our hero!)

I don't think Chuy would go for it - he's a one-woman man at most - but I wouldn't put it past AS to throw herself at him in her inebriated state.

Good point, Julie. I'd throw myself at Don Chuy, too (assuming MA didn't want me to throw myself in his direction).

Don Chuy's mullet is enough to keep me away.

I don't think AS would be seducing Chuy for his hair. She'd be doing it for his big plastic jug of luscious, silky pulque.
