Que pobres tan ricos 127: Where do they get hair gel in prison? (and other minor details)

Ana Sofia makes a big show of gushing over the breakfast she cooked. Pretty soon everyone at the restaurant is clamoring for some of that, Lupita rolls her eyes.

Mini's mom tends to the bruise on her daughter's face. Mini pouts. If I can't have Mike, no one can! Her mom tells her to just focus on getting as many bucks as possible out of Ahole so they can afford their expensive lifestyle. Kissyfaces ensue.

Guendy is getting super close to the Banana King, his shirt is open and she's rubbing his chest. She wants more of his time. He protests about a guy he has to meet, but, predictably, she wins. They smooch. He tries vainly to fret about his son, but she shuts that down easily. She entices him to a private dinner at her place later. Oooh lah lah?

Ana Sofia washes dishes. Interesting! Anyway, the mom (forget her name) is rightfully annoyed.  I like how she calls AS "Doña Fufurra." The very same Fufurra says this food is far too complicated for simple folk like her to learn to appreciate and cook - it's not garnacha fried in lard.

In Jail, Mike's cellmate meets him on the stairs, calls him "mi Mike," which is cute, and gives him advice about looking calm and confident in front of the judge. Later in his cell Mike apologizes to a Jesus card for his sins.

Ahole drops in at the restaurant. Lupita tries to shut him down and keep him away from Emiliano, but he's actually brought what's-her-name her first modeling check. She goes and gets the kid. Emiliano is completely won. Ugh. It gets worse. The kid has agreed to intercept and steal all the letters Mike sends and block all phone calls and stop Lupita from seeing him ever.

AHA! Guendy's plan is clear! The sexy dinner is actually a meeting with the banana prince! Banana King: I just don't understand how you could like boys. Guendy, attempting to defuse, says "Easy! I love boys!" "What's wrong with girls?" "Meh, there's nothing wrong with girls but manly papuchos really move my turbines. BK's objections seem awfully simpleminded, which is weird given how long he's been brooding over them. He leaves unaccepting. Guendy to the Banana Prince: he'll get there bit by bit, like training a donkey with bits of apple!

Saul tels the R-Ps about mike's court date. Leo gets all excited about courtroom drama until Saul tells him it's not gonna be like the movies and there will be no fistfights. For her part, A.S. is terrified of more press and scandal.

Saul then goes to Lupita to tell her that she'll get to see if not talk to Mike at court. Emiliano, really starting to take after his dad with the evil grimaces, overhears and makes a plan. He will pretend to have the shits to keep his mom home, that little shit!

As the kid is acting sick and running to the bathroom constantly (where he sits on the toilet and reads his comic book and practices his dad's evil smirk), Ana Sofia sees a perfect opportunity to be superior and tells Lupe that maybe her kid is sick from all the low-class food that is served around the house. Geez.

In the courtroom, I totally missed what they were getting at with regards to the "family jewels," (can someone fill me in please?), but it was fun to watch Vilma squirm about saying "balls." However, Mike surprises them all by saying that he couldn't have shot the guy - he was at Minerva's place!

In a boardroom, Ahole is going on about the evils of his cousin and how ashamed granddad would be when he finds that the old dudes have called Agent Chávez in to address their doubts... It seems there was someone else involved in the fraud and her name is Vilma! She has been doing some "strange economic activities."

Ana Sofia will now teach the mom (dang, what's her name?) to cook a simple and "sublime" french vegetable dish. She's a jerk and drinks the cooking wine.

Ahole acts wounded and shocked about Vilma's "betrayal." Agent Chavez is wondering how she possibly could have done all this stuff without help. Ahole squirms and ominously looks at the letter.

Tizoc plays a demo track for some sort of agent who is unimpressed but changes his tune when the kid name-drops Ahole. The agent guy says there might be a market for him but only with a change of image, something more hipster and less provincial then "Tizoc Menchaca."

Nepo, at Mike's jail hearing thing, explains where he got the gun and vouches for Mike as a great guy who wouldn't do anything bad.

The cooking lesson proceeds and it's so annoying I can't even.

AHA! The bullet that killed Girón apparently came from a different gun!

Leo and his sister come home from the jail thing and are astonished to see their mom cooking! "OH. My. COOKING. GOD." Ugh, it sounds like AS wants to get payed for the derisive "lesson."

Ahole, knowing that Mini might be about to corroborate Mike's alibi, brings her the stolen love letter from Mike to Lupita that he had his son steal. She reads it but doesn't look as pissed as Ahole was hoping. Will it change her mind about testifying? From the avances, it looks like it doesn't, as we get to see her gushing in front of the judge about her night of sublime passion with Mike.

Thanks so much for this fabulous recap! AS was cooking Hungarian Goulash, it's Leo's favorite dish, and she and Frida were eating it in the restaurant part and the rest of the customers thought it was so good, they wanted some. Neither Lupe or
Carmelita (She's the cook and friend of the family) has a recipe for it and begged AS to give up her recipe, she wouldn't. That's why Leo was so excited when he came in.

I'm still laughing at the guy that is taking Leo's class and he's already talking the uki talk, lol. Glad Diego got the job at the school teaching soccer.

I have to say I am really liking Nepo and Guendy, they are so good together and she is really good for him, who knew???

As for Emi, I am so glad I missed that part, I got a phone call. He is doing exactly what Ahole wants and then some. How can he look his Mama in the eye? He is becoming a really good liar, I must say.

I am glad the "Zombies" and the "Hecklers" are talking to our Top Cop Agente Chavez, good for them. Vilma sure looks worried. She ought to be thinking about how Ahole keeps throwing people under the bus.

I liked MA talking to the picture of St Jude, Patron Saint of Impossible Cases. I like MA's prison roomy too. He is too funny.

Thanks so much for this fabulous recap Ezra : )

I am so frustrated with that little brat Emiliano. I know he doesn't know the consequences of his actions but UUUUUGHHHHHHH, think about your wonderful mom and all the lies you're telling her.
So I share your sentiments, Ezra, about him being a little shit, thank you.

Ahole giving Minerva the letter worked exactly as he hoped because Minerva no longer believes MA is trying to get back with her, so you see in the previews that Ahole tells her that she can have MA if she says what he wants. So of course it's that she and MA were doing the deed the day Ahole shot himself. MA already admitted to having been with her, but made clear that he did not have sex with her, but Lupe wasn't around.

Ana Sofia will never change. Even when she's being more productive she's a horrible person constantly putting everyone at La Nopalera down.

I'm classically trained in culinary arts so it kills me a little how poorly they fake knowing anything the dishes they name-drop on this show, heh.

Ezra, thanks for the great recap! Alejo killed Girón (this is the murder that MA is being tried for among other crimes) and managed to shoot himself in the cojones in the process.

With the growing presence of Alejo overall and his influence on Emiliano (who has turned into a real obnoxious manipulative lying brat )( I surprised myself with that string of modifiers!!!!) there has been so much less to enjoy lately.

But, I am really enjoying seeing AS in the kitchen and her being able to do something really well besides drinking. It was funny when the customers wanted some of what Frida and Leonardo were eating(the goulash).

It was great that Güendy tried to get Nepo to reconcile with Diego. Unfortunately, Nepo is just as stubborn as he was with accepting the truth about Lupita. At least he wasn't violent this time. Güendy is probably right he will come around in time.

Looks like Vilma might be making her own trip to the reclusorio for women. I really am liking this detective /agent Chávez.

When the music executive is done with José Tizoc, it sounds like there won't be any of him or his music left.
New name, different style of music . . .

Anon 8:35:

I love to cook, but have never been classically trained. I did like that AS was telling Carmelita she should have added the sour cream to the Hungarian Goulash last. Carmelita had added it before hand and I bet it had curdled a bit.

I'm really surprised AS can cook at all. I thought she was all bluster but she actually cooked something, and it was good, who knew???? I still don't like her attitude with the Menchaca or anyone else she thinks is "beneath" her!

Madelaine - I mised that about Saint Jude. That's perfect!

Thank you, Ezra! Yes, good call on little Emi, the little shit!!

Here is the deal with Ahole's family jewels:

This incident took place when MA was rendezvousing with Mini. MA thought she was going to give him some evidence, but Mini was taking her clothes off and trying to seduce him.

Spying from a distance, Ahole couldn't tell who Mini was meeting with - he was just upset that she was cheating on him. Vilma convinced Ahole to leave, and he accidentally shot himself in the junk when he was putting his gun away. (Which is why he now cannot have children.)

This happened when Ahole still thought MA was in Italy, but he told the police he was the victim of a drive-by shooting and that he was sure MA had put a hit on him. (I would think the hospital could disprove that it was a drive-by based on how close the gun was to the wound and the angle of entry.)

The murder of Adolfo was a separate incident, months later. Ahole gave Vilma his own gun for safekeeping. Vilma has no idea that he killed Adolfo, much less that this is the gun that fired the fatal shot.

Ahole's fingerprints are NOT on that gun. If Vilma is arrested for the fraud and they search her place, she'll be accused of Adolfo's murder, too. And if that doesn't cure her of her love for Ahole, nothing ever will.

Additional thoughts:

Kinda sad that I know more about the Mexican legal system than Leo does!

Love how Tizoc's new agent is even more negative about T's style, music, etc than the original one was. And now Tizoc has no choice but to go along with him if he wants his big chance at fame.

I've never had Hungarian goulash before. Wonder if I'd like it. I was definitely confused by the vegetable fricassee. Fricassee is a meat dish that is simmered with vegetables for flavor. If you do this without the meat then you're pretty much just making a mirepoix and then poaching it, which might also be nice but isn't a fricassee.

Julie, you are so right about Alejo's self mutilaion. It did come after Vilma told him to stow it (the gun) somewhere.

Julie:

I think you'd like Hungarian Goulash, it's wonderful. Beef, tomatoes, paprika, bay leaf, onions, garlic, and a bit of beef stock, it cooks about 1 and a half hours until the sauce reduces and then you add the sour cream right at the end. It is served over egg noodles.

Thanks, Ezra. I love your title. Also liked "BK's objections seem awfully simpleminded, which is weird given how long he's been brooding over them." I think the problem with Banana King is that his thoughts just run back and forth on the exact same track over and over, wearing a deeper and deeper rut. His mind never ever wanders into new territory. Good for Guendy for trying to push him out of it, though. She is sloooooowwwwwwllllllllllyyyyy making progress.

I like goulash, but frankly I think it is at exactly the same level of elegance as the everyday Mexican stew-type dishes they always serve in the fonda. Slight change of flavors, nothing more. I know I should never be surprised by the extent of AS's selfishness, but I was still a little agog that she expected to collect any money they made selling her dish, after the Menchacas have been housing and feeding her useless heinie for months, not to mention giving her money for cabs and whatnot, plus probably buying the ingredients she used. She. Is. The. Worst.

I also roll my eyes at how AS is always mocking the greasy foods of the lower classes (although from what we see, they don't actually seem to serve much greasy stuff at the fonda), and somehow her eggs benedict don't count as fatty food. AS must have been in some heaven spa demanding a pedicure when she should have been standing in the line for logic and reasoning skills.

Lupita should have ditched that little brat and gone to the trial. "You're not feeling well, Emiliano? Bummer. Well, no point in me hanging around while you sit on the toilet all day. Here's some rehydrating drink and a magazine. Buh-bye." Lupita is far too kind to her little monster.

Tizoc's new agent is terrible. This should be funny.

Thanks so much Ezra! I went to be early last night, so I missed this episode. I'm shocked that AS has continued the cooking, but not surprised that she is being a snot about it.

Mexican food is extremely complex (I'm not talking about the TexMex stuff we often see), so the stuff AS is whipping up isn't any more difficult. It's just different. And everything she has prepared so far involves cream-- not exactly healthy light fare either. It's wonderful that the folks in Nopalera are open-minded enough to try something new. AS certainly isn't!

Frankly AS (and family) often lauds what are essentially simple, peasant dishes just because they're European and it's quite ridiculous. Mexican cuisine is in fact considered one of the major cuisines these days. Not to mention all the Asian restaurants that are among the finest in the world.

But for example, MA speaking of banana bread, which is an incredibly simple baked good available in pretty much any grocery store in some form, or Leo wanting tortilla española, which is a homey Spanish dish, and looking down their noses at Mexican dishes that are often far more complicated just makes me twitchy.

They're basically showing all the Menchacas being swallowed up by Alejo. Tizoc losing himself for the same of fame, Perla thinking she's a top model, Lupe being filled with doubt, Emiliano being a horrid brat.

It's funny because AS thinks her tastes are so sophisticated, but they are not at all. Like how she talks about buying her shampoo in London or Paris, like you can't buy fancy shampoo in Mexico City. You can buy pretty much any fancy thing in Mexico City. There are LOTS of really rich people there. She just has snooty attitude against Mexico and has decided to deem anything about it beneath her, even if the things she embraces are no better.

Remember at the beginning when she still had money and she bought that HORRIBLE painting? She does not have good taste. She knows nothing about taste or class or elegance, so she substitutes expensive and foreign and snooty and hopes the poors won't know the difference, but I'm pretty sure most of them do.

I think it's quite deliberate that the things she is making to showcase her supposed sophistication are not sophisticated at all. Eggs and ham on toast with cream sauce? Yeah, that's pretty basic, even if you give it a fancy name. Same with the Spanish tortilla and the other stuff. Foods that are mundane or even peasanty in their places of origin.

I bet if Lupita and Carmelita just gave a French or Italian made-up name for the dishes, and mentioned they learned the recipe from some famous foreign chef, AS would eat all the same things they've been cooking this whole time and think it was much better.

Ezra: BK's objections seem awfully simpleminded, which is weird given how long he's been brooding over them.

Julia: [BK's]thoughts just run back and forth on the exact same track over and over, wearing a deeper and deeper rut. His mind never ever wanders into new territory.

Wow, yes. Thank you both. I've been trying to put this "feature" of Nepo's into words for many weeks. That's it exactly. I don't know if it's that he doesn't have the capacity to think new thoughts, or if he's just too lazy or afraid; but either way, it explains a lot about him, including his taste in interior decor (cartoon horsies, bananas) which seem to have been fixed at around age 8.

Why does Guendy want a boyfriend who has to be trained like a donkey? (Or is it a plus that he can be trained at all?)

Did the agent suggest "Ty" as Tizoc's new showbiz name? Tizoc will end up like Greg Brady as Johnny Bravo.

When Saul was talking to Lupita after the trial I thought sure he was going to mention MA's letter. Argh! Follow up, people! Follow up!!

And I keep asking myself if I'm being to harsh with Emi considering his age, sudden acquaintance with his father, little monsters at his school, etc., but even if he really had been sick, unless his symptoms were serious (swelling, hives, fever, etc.) there was no reason for Lupe to hang out with him. He didn't need any help in the bathroom, and there were other adults in the house who could have looked in on him and brought him something to drink once in a while.

I can see why Leo and Frida would be excited about the dishes AS was making. When you've undergone a big life upheaval and a lot of stress, and everything has changed and you're living an unfamiliar lifestyle and eating unfamiliar foods all the time, having the same food mama used to make (or had the servants make, back when she could) can be very comforting.

But that is still no excuse for AS to be constantly insulting the food the Menchacas have so graciously been providing.

Ezra and Jane:

Please be safe during Hurricane Arthur.

Yes, the agent did suggest Tizoc go by "Ty"! He hates Tizoc! He is trying to make him generic and forgettable, I'm sure.

Re authentic Mexican cooking - oh my yes. As opposed to AS's image of Mexican food, which is closer to Gringo Chow (brown some ground beef with an envelope of powdered mix, stick it in a tortilla, add some sauce from a can), Mexican cuisine emphasizes complexity and subtlety.

Maybe AS can whip up a decent Hungarian goulash for the kiddies, but I wonder if she'd have the patience to measure out all the ingredients in this recipe for a mole sauce.

PS I'm not knocking Gringo Chow. I make it all the time. But I know it's not "Mexican cuisine"!

I wonder if AS has ever even tried things like chiles en nogada or cochinita pibil. Although I also think anyone who doesn't like tacos is just weird. Tacos are delicious. I could go for some tacos al pastor right now.

Yup, to make a lot of Mexican sauces, you toast chiles and spices, rehydrate, grind, and blend, strain, fry and reduce. It is a lot of work!
The Mexican version of olla podrida is quite elaborate!

To be fair Eggs Benedict does take knowledge of hollandaise sauce, which is not a cream sauce. And which is definitely not simmered on a stove as AS was doing!

Heh, Querida Enemiga used to make me batty with their made up cooking methods.

Okay, creamY, not cream. But it's still absurd for someone serving a sauce of egg yolk and butter to sneer at the fat content of anyone else's food.

Oh, absolutely, not to mention that classical French cuisine is loaded with butter.
And northern Italian cuisine isn't shy about fat either.

But I'm sure the European grease Ana Sufrida is accustomed to is of a much finer quality than Mexican grease. @@

Julie, that mole recipe you linked to was beautiful - a work of art!

I love Pati's Mexican Table. She makes the yummiest-looking things.

Pati's carnitas recipe is good too. I made it for Father's Day and my family devoured it. They would have eaten more if there'd been any left. This includes family members who were nervous about Mexican food. They snarfed it down as if it were the last available meal on the planet.

The mole recipe is far beyond my aspirations, but it's the perfect example to show to people who think that Mexican isn't a sophisticated cuisine.

Madelaine, I'm with you in regards to Nepo and Gwendy. They have great chemistry and she can eventually twist him around her little finger. I wish Diego would have waited a little longer before he tried to get his dad's approval. I think Nepo needs a some more time to process the news and for Gwendy to work on him a bit more.
