Que Pobres Tan Ricos 146, wednesday

Alejo is menacingly telling Lupe there is no option for divorce/annulment. Meanwhile, EmiliAhole trots up with some bit of electronics or something, "just a little gift from Dad." I think it's a Wii U, and Alejo acts like he forgot to buy games for it. Guess they're going shopping!  Since they are married, he doesn't have to ask permission!

Oh, some good news! Mike is w/ Doña Matti at the hospital and the doctor (and his colleagues, he is quick to point out) has done some tests and found her to be quite healthy. But he wants to do more tests, of course. Aww, she talks about how grateful she is of the help Chuy and Carmen gave her. Kindness is the greatest gift, etc...

Matti remains extremely calm, but is insistent that she will forgive Ahole. Mike protests a bit. She has an interesting stance - he'll always be my grandson and he needs to know that. She's grateful to him for sticking w/ Aureliano through everything. All she wants is to end the resentments. While explaining, she also mentions what may be the strategy with Ahole - keep your enemies close! Also, she doesn't know what kind of atrocities Ahole might sink to if even his grannie denounces him.

I don't know what the foundation is, but AS is at a pool giving a ton of money to some women (and also being mean and vain about the money that "God gave her." They still mock her for her disasters. When she leaves they all talk about her - she has returned to society more insufferable than ever! Now she's a terrible combination of Mother Teresa and Lady Di[iana?]. The ringleader has a wicked alternative plan for the thousands of dollars they just got from AS.

Oh yay, Tizoc's still in trouble! But unfortunately, it's not for being a turdbag. The agent just wants him to talk like a fresa.

At the mall, the twerp picks video games while Lupe attempts to have it out with Ahole. The vile child realizes they're fighting and runs up to talk about how great his dad is. Ahole: well, we can't fight in front of the kid. It's his new weapon - let's spend happy family time! Barf.

You have to learn that being a fresa is a way of life, of being a condescending dick. Fortunately it comes naturally to Tizoc.

Wendy is still talking about that mysterious woman from yesterday. She still wants to hire her. And GASP! The banana king is still married to the mother of his son!

Aaaaand AS is now transferring a ton of money to her personal account on the apparent cart-blanche authorization of her son Mike. Oops, how'd he fall for that one? Oh, she forged it. She has a moment with her dog.

Mati is surprised to see Frida still eating with the Menchaca. She notices that the girl is even paler than usual. Grandmotherly advice-dispencing mode, ACTIVATE! Oh dear lord could they go more overboard on the pregnancy cliches? She's putting all sorts of weird toppings on her food.

Haha look at Don Chuy playing the video game after EmiliAhole gets sent to bed! At bedtime though, the turd-twerp wants to live with his Dad.  She says no and he pouts.

Doña Mati puts a plan into action - she takes the chofer to go buy some street tacos, all greasy and meaty and intense, and shoves them under Frida's nose. Predictably, the girl runs and vomits, and Matti gives the camera a knowing look, like this was some devious abuela-trick to get verification of pregnancy.

Tomorrow, at the office, Matti is planning to bring her grandsons together in her office. Also she reveals to Mike that he was always Aureliano's favorite, but the man never showed it because of some grand plan to toughen him up and prepare him for leadership or some nonsense. She says that everything the old man did to make Mike angry was completely planned and calculated!  Flashback time! Grandpa wanted to make sure Mike was comfortable and strong and capable of holding his head high and succeeding on his own, not relying on a rich dad. Now it's time for the meeting... Abuelita power!

She makes the boys sit side by side. Closer, closer. Once Alejo is sufficiently uncomfortable, she announces that she is planning to resign as president. Aaaaand giving the presidency to Mike! Bomb drop! Oh cute, she makes Ahole vice-president! That'll be fun!

The new girl comes back to Guendy's. Her name is Rita, and Guendy got so excited about her that she left a customer sitting in a chair.

The boys start fighting and superabuelita shuts 'em up! I love her being tough like this!

Thus far, it seems like Leo has been oblivious to how awful his rich friends are, but it finally gets to him. I like that.

What's the one thing she wants Alejo to do. It's very mysterious and important, and she gives him a week.

Aww, poor Frida is worried and pregnant and she looks on TV and sees Tizoc being a dick in an interview and not acknowledging her!

Ha! Ahole has no one to take his worries to but Mini and Minimom. He basically is just taking out his rage on them but they get him back! He gets a call from Wilma, who's so mad that he's left her to rot. At first he's mean, but she says something (that I miss) that gets him to race down to jail to see her. Ok, they're now accusing her of killing Girón. She says he needs to confess to the murder or else.

Granny knows Frida's pregnant.

Thanks Ez! I tried to watch but all of a sudden Flash decided it had to update and it took so long I missed 35 minutes of the show.

Ezra, loved your "superabuelita". Thanks for the very fine and fun recap.

I also loved MA calling Alejo out about Vilma's innocence and his guilt in front of doña Mati. Also, loved doña Mati telling Alejo that if he did not like being the vice president he could resign and live off the few shares of the company that he did own. He didn't like that suggestion.

It was interesting finding out that don Aureliano did not want to make the same mistakes with his grandson MA that he had made with his own. So MA lucked out when he thought his grandfather just didn't like him.

Also, I was glad doña Mati told Frida she knows she is pregnant. That should give Frida the support she needs to sort out her situation.

I would sure like the "one week deadline" (that doña Mati gave Alejo to comply with) to apply to Alejo filing for an annulment from Lupe but I am probably being too optimistic since we still have a few weeks left and need to keep the drama churning.

Don Chuy was so happy playing those video games!

Ezra:

Thank you for this marvelous recap!

I too liked Superabuelita! Dona Mati was one tough cookie with both Ahole and My Name Mike! I wonder how this is going to work with Mike and Ahole working together. I also like Dona Mati putting her foot down with Ahole. I too think it has to do with the annulment.

So Nepo is married. Guendy wasn't happy to hear it. Why didn't he divorce long ago?

Frida was eating chicken! Amazing for a vegan. I liked her little explanation. And when Dona Mati got the street food, loaded with fat and meat, poor Frida. But at least Dona Mati knows Frida is preggers and will help her.

Tizoc sounded like Leo without the ukis, too funny. I liked his English phrases he tacked on too. And he used Carlos' favorite word in the right way too, NEXT! Too funny.

Can't wait for tonight to see how Vilma will hold Ahole's feet to the fire.

Ezra:
great recap.
what AS forged was a power of attorney, which, if she wrote it very vague, could mean she would be able to 'play' MA pretty much anywhere to do anything.
What Vilma summoned A-hole with was the famous 'notebook' that Mini and Isela found way back when and they had no clue what the numbers meant...
I don't remember who ended up with it, if Mini actually gave it to Saul or not... I think not.
Anyway, that is what made A-hole jolt up... and she did not tell A-hole that she thought he killed Adolfo, just that the cops were accusing her of that...

Regarding that power of attorney that AS forged...would it be legal since no witnesses also signed the form? She said God was her witness, but I don't think that would hold up in a court of law.

Does anyone know what kind of necktie knot Ahole uses? It is ornate and somewhat unusual. He used the same kind of knot when he dressed up Emiliano with a coat and tie at the birthday party. It sort of resembles an Eldredge knot, but I am not sure.

Thanks, Ezra! I sympathized with you during those long, long, LONG conversation scenes! (They are not my favorite to recap.)

When Mati wanted to sit down and rest before leaving the hospital, I thought she was going to die right then and there. :-(

The aforementioned notebook full of account numbers and/or passwords that Ahole used to keep in his safe: Mini and her mom found it once, but they couldn't figure out what it was, so they put it back in the safe so Ahole wouldn't be suspicious. But Ahole got paranoid on his own and had Vilma take it out and hide it. The cops didn't find it when they searched her place, and Ahole doesn't know where it is either; but it's obviously SERIOUS EVIDENCE. If Vilma turns it over to the police, Ahole will end up in prison and I don't think he'll get a warm welcome. Especially if Bambi sends his regards from afar.

AND, funny how a couple of yesterday's questions got answered last night!

- Nepo having been married, and neglecting to get divorced

- Mati and Aureliano WERE disappointed in their sons (MA's dad and Ahole's dad) - I was never 100% sure I'd heard that right the first time, so it was nice to hear it confirmed again.

Furthermore, Mati said something like "if Aureliano and I had been as tough on them as we were with you and your cousin, they might still be alive today."

So there's yet ANOTHER story to be told...

GoBlueFan - he sometimes does an Eldredge knot and sometimes does a Trinity knot. Maybe some other weird knots too - I don't pay much attention - but we've confirmed those two at least.

I laughed when Ahole flounced out of the office, it was exactly the same as when Emilhole flounced out of the Fonda when Lupe told him to go to bed and again when she told him no way no how would they be living with his dad. The child has turned into an insufferable brat and Lupe is still being too easy on him. He truly has picked up the absolute worst of the RP genes.

I too thought when Mati sat down at the hospital that she was going to be a goner which would have really bugged me.

Glad that Frieda now has someone to support her and Mati is not going to be fobbed off with some lame excuse that she isn't pregnant.

Loved Gwendy ripping into Nepo about not having gotten divorced when he was doing all that chasing after Lupe and now her. I suspect he never bothered to get divorced because he either didn't know where the wife ran off to or figured there wouldn't be any woman for him so why bother. Now he has a problem.

It will be interesting to ee what happens when Gwendy takes Ritas around the hood to introduce her to all her firends.

Thanks Ezra, Mati taking is taking charge, but I don't agree with her about Alejo. Just because he's her grandson doesn't mean you forgive them all the bad stuff they do or did to you. Will she also forgive him for murdering Adolfo?

As all TNs go, there are no abortions, so Frida and Tizoc will end up together.

I hope Lupe doesn't give in and live with Alejo, but I can see it happening. She's reluctantly given in to everything so far.

At least now with Rita showing up, Nepo can get the divorce he needs. Otherwise, it would be much more difficult.

Thanks, Ezra! Fantastic!

So all this time Nepo was trying to get Lupita to marry him, he was still married and didn't feel the need to do anything about that? ¡¿QUÉ?!

I haven't seen it yet, but I look forward to Tizoc talking like a fresa.

I'm glad Superabue is back and straightening things out, but I think having My Name Mike and Ahole working together is going to be a disaster. I wonder what poor Mati will think when she finds out about all Ahole's crimes.

Cathyx:

Since Nepo lives in the D.F. he could have gotten a divorce long ago. All he had to do was get the quickie divorce, the spouse doesn't even need to know. But Nepo being Nepo probably thought his wife would come back to him. Go figure. Oh, and Lupe would not have taken that well either. Him still being married that is.

Mads, I agree Lupe would have been at least as angry about Nepo as Gwendy was, but we already know Nepo doesn't worry about that kind of stuff. He didn't care that Lupe didn't want him in the first place, so why should he care that she'd object to his marital status? I still think Gwendy is too good for him.

Cathyx, you bring up something that really bugged me last night. It's a topic that Urban Anthropologist was once moved to devote a Weekend Discussion to: Forgiveness. At that time, even though I felt strongly, I didn't comment because I was unable to express my thoughts in a coherent or concise way. Since then, however, I've figured it out:

It's fine and dandy to let something go, out of mercy or as a way to have peace in your heart or whatever, when it's just between two people.

Apart from that, however, if you are talking about the kind of criminal who would do the kinds of things that Ahole did to HIS OWN GRANDMOTHER, it is the height (or should I say the nadir) of irresponsibility to give that a pass. If he did those things to her, he'll do such things to virtually anyone else who gets in his way too. Mati can forgive him in her heart if she is so inclined; but if she doesn't turn him in, she is leaving him free to harm others.

I also still believe that it was extremely nasty of Aureliano to pit MA and Ahole against one another. This idiotic competition (seriously, encouraging Ahole to marry and procreate? dumbest idea EVER) gave false hope to Ahole and encouraged him to stick around instead of moving on and making his trouble elsewhere. Grampa strung Ahole along for years, setting the stage for deep resentment and provoking all of his worst instincts knowing full well what a greedy monster he was.

Not that I feel sorry for Ahole, but why would you do this to someone? Isn't it a clear recipe for disaster? Thanks to Aureliano's little games, Mati and MA have both been in serious physical danger, and Emi is getting put through the wringer.

And let's not even talk about the other victims outside the family, like Vilma and Adolfo. Sure, maybe Ahole still would have ended up laundering money, killing Adolfo, etc., but at least he wouldn't have dragged MA or the family business into it.

*deep breath*

I'm not a big fan of "keep your enemies closer," either. But I'll save that rant for another day. ;-)

Julie, I agree. Actually, I think Ahole may have gotten his sociopathic games-playing tendencies from Aureliano.

Why would Aureliano set up his succession in a way that was nearly guaranteed to create rifts and abuses in the family? A way that was almost certain to reward the evil and cunning and punish the innocent and moral? Why try to drag other people into it, meaning the wives and children MA and Ahole would have to try to acquire to gain control of the company? Did he really want them, especially MA, to have to make those kinds of decisions? Like, should I get married even though I am not in love because if I don't, my mother and siblings will be on the street? That could have happened. If Abuelo was any good at business, he should have known he was setting up a disaster.

Julie, I tend to agree with you, and if the bar is not set at affecting one's own family... defintely the bar is no further than affecting the CHILDREN of the family... I can't wait until Emiliano talks to his 'abuela' about his dad A-hole and how 'wonderful' A-hole has been to him... yikes! i wonder if Mati will give A-hole the benefit of the doubt there too...

the other definite bar... murder. and A-hole is no stranger to that role either.

so how many attempts of murder can we pin on A-hole?
he certainly killed Adolfo.
didn't he try to order Bambi killed?
he also tried to kill MA and Mati, of course.
how about anyone else?
would not be surprised he would have gone after Dr Miranda, Mini or Isela if he saw the need.

Speaking of quick divorce. Lupe could also do this without Ahole ever finding out. I remember from Un Refugio Para El Amor, that Zuria Vega's character, Luciana, also got one and she was preggers at the time but the groom, Rodrigo, didn't know that. Even with Emi, Ahole need not know. He doesn't even need to sign any papers. In PVAA there was a husband that got divorced and married another woman, the woman that is playing Guendy here. And he had two minor children to support. Lupe needs to get with Tomas.

Good job Ezra. I always enjoy your take on this TN and look forward to you crisp recaps.

It's looking to me like Vilma is finally running out of patience. I wonder if Alejo will ever realize how important she had been to the success of his schemes?

I'm so glad that Mati is aware of Frida's pregnancy. She doesn't seem to have any close friends or other support from either world and Tizoc is hopelessly preoccupied with his unrealistic hopes, self-delusions, and all too real problems.

I'm hoping for Bambi to return before this wraps up. He is such a hoot.

Carlos

Thanks, Ezra, for this brisk recap with one zinger after another. Loved all the superabuela comments on Mati's maneuvering. She needs to be tough to overcome Alejo's sneaky ways.
