De Que Te Quiero, Te Quiero #166, 8/28/2014

De Que Ellas Son Rehenes, Son Rehenes o De Que No Hay Pila, No Hay Pila

All, it’s been my great pleasure recapping for you all. I’m glad Kat started us on this road. For the most part, it has been delightful. I especially want to thank my fellow recappers, and this fantastic group of commenters! Now, on to the recap!

Rod has taken both Natalia and Brigitte as his hostages (rehenes) at gunpoint, and left El and his team unarmed and handcuffed to the stair railings. He’s ordered that a squad car be left running for him. He smacks Nat unconscious in the back seat, and orders Brigitte to sit next to him in the front. Brigitte begs him to let HER go, and to think of their child. He tells her he couldn’t care less (me importa un comino) about her and the baby. Plus, she betrayed him! She swears she didn’t betray him. He doesn’t believe it

Nat wakes up, assesses the situation, and decides to play hero(ine). She puts a choke hold on Rod, causing him to swerve and then stop the car. He breaks free of her hold and threatens to pistol whip her again. He orders them both to the floor of the back seat, and threatens to shoot them if they cause any more trouble. They both cower on the floor, and Nat cradles Brigitte protectively. Nat finds her cell phone and stealthily makes a call.

El and his team are free and El calls Captain Vermudez. The captain is NOT pleased and won’t even allow El to go inform Carmen in person that her two daughters have been taken hostage by a lunatic. El goes anyway, and breaks the terrible news to Carmen with a hug, while Mushroom listens sadly. Carmen is inconsolable and demands that El return her daughters to her!

Clueless about the REAL important things happening, Diego has called Irene to mess with her. He insists he can’t meet the client she asked him to meet, and wants the number of the client so that he can call them to reschedule and apologize personally. Irene, who is driving, finally has to admit that he has to go because it’s a surprise Nat is planning. Diego gives himself a pat on the back for having guessed correctly, and gloats that he already knew. Irene wants him to stop with the games and just go meet Nat already. He agrees.

As soon as he hangs up, his phone rings. He hears Nat begging Rod to tell her where he’s taking her and Brigitte. Diego gets an earful of Rod threatening and cursing Nat and Brigitte. He is impactado. He calls El on his land line and tells him all about Nat’s secret call. El tells him not to hang up, and takes his leave of Carmen and Mushroom to go to Caprico to trace the call. El radios Zaimudo to meet him. Carmen demands to go too, so the three of them head to Caprico. Unfortunately, Zaimudo tells the captain where he’s going. The Captain is NOT pleased El disobeyed his orders to come straight back. He heads to Caprico in a huff.

Natalia alerts Brig to the phone and silently mouths for her to start engaging Rod in conversation and looking out the windows to get clues about their location and destination. Considering her more “amiable” relationship with Rod, this would sound more natural coming from Brig than Nat. Brig at first resists, but then she gets with the program. Rod just thinks she’s being her usual annoying self, but Brig does a really great job causally pointing out road markers and locations. They’re on the road to Puebla. Rod tells her to SHUT UP!  Diego listens and takes notes, while shushing all the people who keeping wandering into his office like it’s Grand Central Station.

First Grumps arrives. Diego writes him a note telling him what’s going on. Grumps then calls Irene. Irene goes to cry on Al’s shoulder (guess he’ll be missing that flight to London). Al gives Irene the standard telenovela calmante. They both head to Diego’s office. El arrives with Mushroom and Carmen. Zaimudo and the Captain follow. Everyone is shushed. Strangely enough, it’s the police captain who can’t seem to grasp the gravity and importance of the situation, and the need for silence.

El gets on the phone with Nat and tries to guide her through turning on the tracking app on her phone. Nat and Brig do some excellent teamwork silent communication, and Brig gets Rod out of the car to escort her to pee in the woods, while Nat speaks with El, Diego and Carmen on speaker phone to get the instructions. She notices her battery (pila) is running low, and El advises her to turn the phone off to conserve power, and to only turn it on once they have reached the final destination. Nat freaks out about cutting off communication, but pulls herself together by the time Rod comes back with Brig. The call is cut off before Zaimudo could pinpoint the location. They all must now wait with their hearts in their throats for Nat to be able to turn the tracking app on.

Once the call is cut off, the Captain takes the opportunity to demand El's badge/shield (placa) and gun (arma). He’s off the case! El argues vehemently that he’s the best man for the job, but the Captain isn’t having it. This seems like the perfect setup for a cop buddy movie.

Everyone gathered can’t believe this and are ticked off at the Captain, but he refuses to change his mind. His team is on the case.

Everyone is distraught. Irene, Al, and Diego want to give Carmen the famous telenovela calmante. Mushroom brings her tea, while Diego, searching for a way to be useful, goes first to the Caprico dispensary and then to the local pharmacy looking for calmantes for Carmen. He ends up sitting on the corner in front of the pharmacy consumed with worry. El, meanwhile, drives home and beats his steering wheel and cries in frustration and worry as he remembers Rod taking Brig and Nat.

At the fonda, Abdul, Paolo, Mali, and Mara try to act like nothing is wrong when Luz brings Lupita from school. Lupita asks for Carmen and they tell her Carmen had business to take care of. While Mali distracts her with food and conversation, Abdul reminds Luz and Paolo of the importance of pretending everything is ok in front of la Enana (midget/runt).

Everything is certainly not ok. Rod goes off road into the forest, then forces the girls to march through the forest at gunpoint. Brig falls and hurts her ankle. Rod doesn’t care and demands that she get up on her own. Nat gets between him and Brig and helps Brig up and to walk. They reach a dilapidated looking cabin. Rod locks Brig up in a room upstairs, and locks Nat into a room downstairs. But before he locks Nat up, he gets rapey with her. First kissing her by force (she bites his lip), and then by running his hands over her and telling her they still have a pending honeymoon (luna de miel).

Nat takes out her cell phone from her jacket pocket and follows El’s instructions for allowing her location to be traced. Unfortunately she only has 5% battery strength left and has no idea if the trace is working or how long she’s got till the phone goes dead.

Zaimudo runs into Morales at the station and tells Morales all. El is in his apartment and has just loaded his personal pistol, and put extra bullets in his jacket pocket, when Rod calls. He’s called El to taunt him and to demand a ransom and a get out of jail free card. El promises to deliver it personally, but also demands proof of life by speaking to Nat. Nat has just enough time to kick the cell phone under the bed as Rod walks in and shoves his phone in her face. El asks her if she’s managed to turn on the tracking. Nat says she tried…er..tried not to cry, but she’s scared. El reassures her, and she manages to say Brig is fine before Rod cuts off the call.

Diego, still moping in front of the pharmacy, gets the signal from Nat’s phone with her location (in the middle of a forested area with no visible roads). He tries to call El, but El is busy on the phone with Rod. Diego takes off in his car, and luckily brought the car charger since HIS phone is low on battery too. El calls the Captain, who is continuing to act like an ass. He thanks El for the info, he’s still OFF the case, and the Captain will take it from here. El regrets calling him. While driving, Diego calls El again, but this time he’s on the phone with the Captain. Diego has a hunch that Rod took the girls to a cabin where he used to take his conquests. Big Al told him about it. He sends a text to El.

Morales arrives at El’s and tells him he’s with him all the way. You say jump, and I’ll say how high? (usted dice rana y yo salto/you say frog, and I’ll jump) They get Diego’s text, and take off in El’s squad car, with the help of Diego’s directions and the GPS. Morales knows some shortcuts they can take to beat Diego there. El calls Carmen and the folks at Caprico get the update.

Back in the cabin from hell, Rod is being haunted by memories of better times in the cabin with Big Al and hot women. Big Al make an appearance and taunts Rod. Rod takes his frustration out on Brig, who is trying to find a way out of her room, and slaps her to the ground. Nat hears the commotion upstairs and starts yelling at Rod in a panic and banging on her door. Then she starts looking for a weapon and finds a large piece of wood over the window. She waits behind the door until Rod comes in dragging Brig with him, and knocks him upside the head, knocking him out cold. She quickly searches his pockets for the car keys, grabs Brig, and they run out of the cabin. Unfortunately, she listens to Brig about what direction the car was in and they end up running around in circles in the forest. Brig is too tired to run, and her ankle hurts, so she sends Nat to keep looking for the car.  Nat refuses to leave her at first, but then tells her to hide if she hears Rod coming. Nat finds the car, starts it up, starts driving, and then…BAM! She drives right into a tree, and I remember that neither Nat nor Brig (nor Carmen) knows how to drive! She takes both the police radio and the walkie talkie and calls for help, but gets no reply. Then she sees Rod and Brig running towards the car. Nat jumps out of the car to try to put herself between Brig and Rod, but it’s too late. He manages to grab Brig, takes her by the throat, and holds a gun to her head, while Nat looks on horrified. He tells Nat to say goodbye to her sister. Nat begs him to not harm Brig!

Tomorrow: The Gran Final! Rod finds Nat’s cell phone, and he threatens her with the gun. Diego sneaks up on the cabin. Rod shoots El and maybe Morales too! Diego and Rod have a showdown, with Brig in the middle! Carmen sobs! There better be some happy stuff too.

How big is the Dead Pool Hit List in this TN ?

Rod is more vicious like Feo and Ahole.

Vivi thanks so much for this great recap. I am proud to be part of this team with you!

Similar to yesterday's botched capture, I don't understand why Diego never put his phone on mute. If he can do apps, he has a mute button.

I think the captain became another character assassination. Though the writers did have him act dumb previously, they also told us about a will that doesn't seem to be surfacing. But really in the middle of all this crazy he takes El off the case?!!

Sadly tomorrow's episode looks like 45 or 50 min of mayhem. I'm very concerned.

Kat thanks so much for your recap. I'm glad you felt the same way I did about some of the plot points; dudes, why the uncomfortable ED detour on this family show.

Karen- It was also driving me crazy that Diego didn't just put the phone on mute. All the better for ramping up the drama, I'm guessing.

It seems the writers are trying to make us feel that Vicente's illegal suppression of his wife's will, and wrongful CEO position at the company is ok, as long as he's now a nice guy. It's NOT ok, Writers!

The episode itself was exciting, and it was good to see Brig and Nat working together, and doing pretty well for a while there. Now, let's hope they also give us plenty of happy time in tomorrow's finale too.

Yes Vivi the lack of muting was probably to create drama but like supposed capture of Rod it stretched my beanie too much.

But I am glad that Brig and Nat were working together as you noted. And let's hope the previews for tomorrow are only about 15 mins and the rest is happy time.

Tono Telenovio Sighting! He was in the background when Abdul was letting Paolo, Mara and Luz know they should keep a good vibe for Lupita.

Why does Brig hate Nat so much ?

I mean, what did Nat do for Brig to hate her ?

Thank you so much, Vivi in DC!

5FT Thank you SO very, very much for getting us all involved from the very beginning. I have told you this many times, but you just amaze me.

Thank you to our wonderful recappers for such hard work especially here at the end when things seem to be so frustrating.

I will miss our group! I'm watching MCET, but really just to see SN and JS. The story line is pretty predictable, but I love Silvia Navarro and will hang out there. The other stories don't interest me, sad to say.

Well, let's hope for the best for tomorrow!

Fatima

Fatima

Steve- It was just envy, plain and simple. Brig is lazy and feels entitled, and it just burns her when others (especially Nat) gets the things she wants. It doesn't matter if those other people worked hard and she didn't lift a finger.

Corazon- It might be a good thing that they keep Tono in the background. Look what happened to Angela when she stopped being a background player! :)

Thanks Fatima. I'm watching a few minutes of MCET each week. Enough to see my fave SN, and I read the recaps and sometimes chime in. It's doing well in both Mexico and here, and I'm glad. I'm trying not to get sucked in by the other new tns, but it's hard.

It's a wonder Vicente didn't chew up the Captain and growl that the lives of his granddaughter and unborn great grandchild were on the line.

Nice Review! You covered everything. I'm glad you pointed out to that Nat couldn't drive, because when she ran into the tree the first thing I thought about was, "I hope the recapper states she couldn't drive," because that was ridiculous. I'm actually surprised that Nat was able to knock him out with the wood. I didn't think that would actually work but it did. But c'mon, take the gun. He was out, take the gun. Nat's held a gun before(in the hotel), they should've taken it.

Also the previw doesn't look good. Looks like El and morales get shot and Diego has to save the day. I wonder if Carmen was bawling because Brig died, or El. But I believe one of them will, based on the preview.

Thank you so much, Vivi! I got home late last night and my recording cut off the last bit so I didn't get to see Nat driving into a tree or the avances!!!

I agree with you, there better be some happy stuff, too!!!

You're betting either El or Brig get killed off tonight?

Morning all! I certainly hope no one gets killed, with only an hour to go. That would be too much tragedy in a short amount of time. This is a light telenovela, not a dark death fest like Robo. But those previews sure didn't look good.

Bryan- It would have been good if they had gotten the gun, but I think Nat was focused on escape and being quick, while Brig had completely frozen up in the corner.

Vivi, you captured all the events so well, your tone and narrative were excellent "Carmen is inconsolable and demands that El return her daughters to her!". You have an incredible knack for noting every single detail and as we've noted during the years, your memory is amazing.

Thank you for the wonderful vocabulary. "Nat wakes up, assesses the situation, and decides to play hero(ine)" was another favorite.

I love that both Nat and Brig remained strong women throughout. Despite their tears and fears, they tried to be as proactive as possible to help El to find them. I would never have had my wits about me. I though Brig was very brave and am hoping this was a pivotal turnaround for her.

I hated seeing El cry at his frustration at the kidnappings. But, am relieved Morales is now on the case "Morales arrives at El’s and tells him he’s with him all the way. You say jump, and I’ll say how high? (usted dice rana y yo salto/you say frog, and I’ll jump)". I have faith in this duo!

I agree with Karen in being concerned as to what is to come tonight especially at the previews which I won't go into. Let's hope it's a "red herring" and that all's well that ends well.

Vivi, looking forward to reading your comments and hope you will be able to recap soon.

What a great community this has been...

Diana

Thanks, Diana. I always look forward to your comments. I agree that Nat and Brig kept it together pretty well (more so that most people would in real life), and were really smart about alerting their family/friends to where they were going. I felt bad for El too. He loves those girls and I think he felt personally responsible for allowing Rod to take them.

Vivi, thank you so much for this and all your other excellent recaps and comments. Your recollection of detail is astounding and assessment of events and characters spot on. Even as a starter and you head to the bench for a much needed rest, if called, you jump right back in.

"This seems like the perfect setup for a cop buddy movie."

Hot Rod - like herding cats

Brigitte - can you hit Wendy's drive-thru for a frosty

El - take this job and shove it

Carmen - they'll always be my babies

Nat - talk dirty, right now?

Alonso - "The Pusher Man"

Diego - this better not be a ruse

Paul - never know what to do with my hands

Irene - no it's not a hump on my back, it's Alonso

Ah Miss Vivi--thanks for the great, detailed recap--with vocabulary--always my favorite part--and a chance to relive the drama from last night. I wanted to be blasé but man, I was riveted to my seat and very tense!

"They all must now wait with their hearts in their throats for Nat to be able to turn the tracking app on"

You conveyed the tension so well with that one sentence. And I had to laugh when you referred to "tea" as the telenovela calmante. Man, tea has never worked that way for me! I just had to laugh when Carmen said she was feeling better about the girls being in danger after having a cup of tea. As if!

Yes, Nat and Brigette are working together, but the latter is still a whiny butt and a drag. Very brief window of opportunity for her to straighten up and fly right, I must say. And not much time for a happy ending either, unless we're going to have a "meses después" flash on the screen.

Anyway, cheers everybody. Thanks for the good times and the hard work of our dedicated recappers, keeping this going.

TGIF one and all!

Judy- If only we had access to the readily available calming teas and pills that tn characters do. We could all have Calgon moments at any time of the day! ;)

"Irene - no it's not a hump on my back, it's Alonso" LOL, Tofie! Thanks as always for your fun and ironic lists.

Judy- I noted that Brig first asked Rod to let HER go, no mention of Nat. But, by the time it became clear that he didn't care a whit about her (or their baby), and that this could get very ugly, she became a team player.

Eleazar getting shot should convince him and Carmen to stop playing high school games and get on with it.

I don't think anyone will die except Rodrigo. Although the main villains in Amor Bravio didn't die, they both ended up in jail. Minor villana Ximena (played by Laura Carmine) ended up going over a cliff and exploding.

I don't think anyone died in Que Bonito Amor, either. Maybe Rodrigo will end up in the crazy house for the rest of his life, tormented by Big Al.

Anon207- I was waiting for Grumps to pull rank with the Captain too, and demand that El stay on the case. He was surprisingly subdued during that scene, and then genuinely surprised that the old grump Captain would ignore the sound advice and desires of the younger people under his leadership, and barrel ahead without them. Hey! Who does THAT sound like? I hope they're not turning the old man soft, just because he's found his tender side.

Thought I heard Morals mention bullet proof vest before he and El sped off.

Great job by Brigitte providing landmarks and distracting Rod and Nat bashing him with the stick but wanted her to hit him again and take the gun. Rod should feel like a punching bag by now.

Tofie- Yeah. El had Morales grab his bullet proof vest from his squad car before they hopped into El's squad car. I'm assuming El has his own in his car. Hopefully, that will keep everyone safe.

Vivi, thanks for you well structured recap and the vocabulary notes. You do this so well.

Well, looks like we are in for more violence tonight. Seems like they have a lot of ground to cover to bring this thing in for a smooth landing.

I was impressed with Rod's marksmanship with a pistol. I am a lousy shot with a pistol, so it always impresses me when someone can actually hit something with one.

Nat's first driving lesson didn't go very well, did it? She's about as good with a car as I am with a pistol.

Since they had Morales get his bullet proof vest out of his trunk, I'm hoping both he and El are wearing one.

I was away from any computers yesterday, so would also like to thank 5ft for yesterday's installment.

David

David- Yes. Rod must have a lot of practice with a gun.

As for the driving, I hope one of the first things Abdul and Paolo do after this ordeal is give their mom and sisters driving lessons! You never know when you'll get taken hostage and dragged into the woods by a lunatic again.

And Mali and Mara too! I don't think they can drive either.

Wait a minute, Brig and Nat don't know how to drive ?

LOL.

Alicia- Nope. This is pretty common among poor women, especially poor women in other countries. When you watch tns, you'll see a pattern that the only women who know how to drive are middle and upper class women (who tend to have drivers anyway). Driving is often a thing that men (and rich people) do in other countries.

I remember in Sortilegio it was a really big deal when then galan insisted that the heroine (who started out poor) learn how to drive, precisely because he wanted her to be better able to take care of herself if the bad guys attempted to kidnap her (again). He also got her a bullet proof SUV-- but he was quite the galan. *sigh*

Even middle class women, if they come from Arab countries, don't know how to drive. The girls are not allowed to ride bicycles after the age of 8 (nor can they wear shorts after that age). A fried of mine from Palestine took years to finally learn how to drive here. In the meantime, her husband, a busy doctor, had to drive her to the grocery etc.

Judy- My mom finally learned a few years back, got her license, and my dad (or I) still drives her everywhere, or she takes public transportation (which she feels the most comfortable in).

Well, I'm all sympathy. While I still drive a stick shift, I'm no great shakes on the road and hate trying to find my way downtown or to make the long drive to Charlotte on my own (negotiating the freewary merges getting out of Columbus still scares me silly).

Vivi, I love your rationale for learning to drive: "You never know when you'll get taken hostage and dragged into the woods by a lunatic again."

My mother-in-law didn't learn how to drive until after my father-in-law passed away. In fact, when I asked my future wife out for the first time, she said she would have to check with her mother because she was "babysitting" her since her father was out of town. It turns out that is what members of her family called it when they were responsible for providing transportation for their mother.

David

Vivi, gracias for this recap, and for getting involved to save me from carpal tunnel when the 2-hour episodes started! What an action-packed episode!

"Clueless about the REAL important things happening, Diego has called Irene to mess with her." Yeeeeeah, that was off-key compared to the rest of it.

"Brig does a really great job causally pointing out road markers and locations." That she did, and I was surprised that Rod didn't find it suspicious, just annoying. That's what he gets for underestimating her and Nat.

"While Mali distracts her with food and conversation" It was such a small moment, but so natural. I love the way Mali and Mara have just fit right in with the Garcias. Big Al *sniff* was heading there, too.

"Morales arrives at El’s and tells him he’s with him all the way." El and I both need a kick in the shins for taking so long to realize the awesomeness that is Morales. It really just hit me last night how solid he's been from the beginning. A few minor goof-ups here and there, but basically dependable. I'm going to miss him and Kimmie.

"Big Al make an appearance and taunts Rod." Always a pleasure!

"She drives right into a tree, and I remember that neither Nat nor Brig (nor Carmen) knows how to drive!" It didn't hit me why it was taking her so long to do things like locate the ignition and actually turn on the car. I thought they were doing it for extra added "drama." And then she hit the tree. Yikes!

"I don't understand why Diego never put his phone on mute." Yep, Karen, Mr. 5ft kept telling him "mute and speakerphone" but Diego refused to listen.

"It's a wonder Vicente didn't chew up the Captain and growl that the lives of his granddaughter and unborn great grandchild were on the line." Anon207, I was thinking about that, too. He's manipulated that same Captain into doing what he wants on previous occasions...why stop now?

I'm thinking Rod's a goner, for sure, and someone else is at least getting shot. Morales had 2 bulletproof vests in his trunk, but there's 3 guys to share them. Vivi, I hope you're right and El has one in his trunk, too!

Thanks Fatima and David, for your kind words!

"It was such a small moment, but so natural. I love the way Mali and Mara have just fit right in with the Garcias. Big Al *sniff* was heading there, too."

Kat- So true. Big Al loved that family and fit right in. He would have made such a great addition to the Garcias. Brig really missed the boat there.

You're likely right about the number vests because in the previews Diego was clearly wearing one. Now I'm all worried again!

Vivi: Thanks for the recap. Finally this one is ending.

Stupid of the Captain to take El off a case that was in crisis. HE should be the one suspended.

Nat finally found her brain.

I liked how Nat immediately tried using the radio after the car crashed. No hand wringing.

Speaking of Mali, I was a little surprised that Carmen did not ask her to call her "mama" after she married Abdul.

Nanette

The Garcias didn't even have access to a car until Gino gave a car to Paolo.

The only female on this show that has been shown driving is Irene (driving both Vicente & Tadeo).

Everyone else has used a cab.

What a great recap of a very frustrating episode. When I watched the episode I was annoyed because with 3 nights to go, instead of advancing and tying up lose ends, the entire hour was spent on the kidnapping. But you managed to make "lemonade out of lemons".
I'm really looking forward to tonight but not getting my hopes up too high that there will be closure on several things like: Karina's situation, Tiburcio testifying against Rod, etc, etc.
Wouldn't it be great if we all lived close so that we could have our own private celebration for putting up with what these novelas put us through.

Oh, and as usual, I appreciate the translations. I had never heard "pila" used for battery before. Is that just in Mexico?

I don't know if "pila" is just in Mexico, but I know I've heard it before. Less often for literal batteries "ponte las pilas" for something like "get going" or "put some energy into it."
