Family Fallout
Cap. 14
• Don Fernando has retrieved the car keys (Nando is shocked!) along with the credit cards (No! Not the credit cards, too??) from Fannie, who’s careless late night napping at Leon’s has caused a mini-scandal. “--My house, my rules!” “--Papa, you’re such a disappointment since Mama’s death. You’ve ignored us and when you are at home you close yourself in and do nothing but work!” She races off and slams her door.
• Ana realizes there’s a deeper pain here seeping to the surface and mentions this to Bruno. Bruno stammers back to Ana that they’ve never had a blow up like this in the family before. “—Why not? It’s a family full of kids and they all have their problems, right?" “--If only Sra. Stefania were still alive…..” "--Well, she’s not so they’ll have to learn to deal!”
• DonFer tells his wife’s portrait that he’s failed as a father. And now, Fannie’s dating his messenger boy.
• Fannie’s solution is to pack her bags and head for Leon’s digs at the boarding house. (That’ll last about as long as it takes her to realize she’s gotta share the bathroom with six hairy beasties who are also strangers.)
• Brooding Bruja de Bela has a bitch fest with herself at her apartment because she at least expected a phone call the day after their night before and got bupkis…..
• DonFer rings Ana on her cell and asks her to come to the library for a bit if she’s free.
• Ana’s solution is to get DonFer to relax and rethink things by bringing a couple of brandies with her. DonFer admit’s Fannie was right about having ignored them for that past year. Ana agrees he’s cold at times. She lets slip that her nickname for him has been Don Hielo. He actually likes it and they have a good giggle or two over it. He tells her he admires her “spontaneity” and the that she’s a breath of fresh air. He’s proud of his decision to hire her and with what she’s done for the kids. He doesn’t want to lose her…er… the family rather, would be lost without her. They agree to tutear [use the familiar form of addressing each other].
• Leon tells Fannie that he’s in love with her and he’ll always be there for her no matter what. They begin chatting. He tells her that among his other talents and his job as messenger boy, he also is a professional masseur. (Fairytale Theater time for preteens….) He lights candles and gives her a massage to relax her--without any of the funny stuff. (Time for a hormone check.)
• DonFer, whose hormones are wearing high-tops about now, gets on his knees, kisses Ana's hand, and tells her what a beautiful woman she is. He tells her then that he really loves to dance, especially slow (romantic) dancing in a woman's arms. He puts on some sexy American jazz. “—for one night let’s just forget you’re the nanny. Let yourself get carried away…..” He pulls her into him and they begin dancing cheek to cheek. He tells her how much she’s changed their lives and his. She mumbles something like he has no idea how much he’s changed hers. Just then Ana accidentally trips and Fernando catches her. They can’t resist the electricity of the moment and they kiss... and kiss….and kiss……
• A bit later that evening in her room (another bit of Fairytale Theater here) Ana has a chat with her conscience about having a thing for DonFer and what she really feels for Johnny—which is not love….. Bruno knocks and needs an alibi for wherever he’s heading out to so late at night. She asks if it’s got something to do with his mysterious phone call earlier. She’ll be like the four walls with his secret….whatever that is, cuz I couldn't catch it in between the slang and the stammering……
• In bed, alone in their individual rooms, both Ana and DonFer remember that night’s kiss as they turn out the lights and head off to Dreamland.
• Next morning at breakfast DonFer is suffering from a well-deserved hangover. Don Nico guesses that Fer has a new woman in his life. Ana comes in with Luz. Everybody thinks Fannie is still upstairs in her room angry or sleeping still since nobody’s seen her come down and she didn’t answer Ana’s knock. The noise from the kids is deafening for Don Fernando whose head is feeling about ten times its normal size considering. Ana asks them to speak very softly since their papi --she takes a bite of her toast and adds a sexy, sensual lick of her jelly all around her luscious lips-- had a“rough” night of it. DonFer notes the naughty nookie look and smiles weakly in acknowledged thanks. Alicia enters the kitchen and then hands DonFer the note from Fannie she found. (Dun dun dun dunnnnn!)
• DonFer reads the note Fannie left while the kids sneak a peek from the hall. He then has Betty, the office's secretary, get him in touch with Leon.
• Don Nico appears by the hall door and asks Ana what’s the matter. They listen to DonFer’s side of the conversation with Leon.(Of course, Viewerville gets to hear both sides.....) “Yes, she’s here with me and spent the night." "--You can stand there and say that like it's nothing???? Let me speak to her." Leon offers. She refuses. "--She won’t speak to you. Don’t worry, I respect her and won’t let anything happen to her.” He’ll pass on the message that they’re all worried about her and that they all love her.
• Meanwhile, Seb has his own problems because there’s the problem with him not attending Lacrosse and needing a costume for his dance contest. (I think).
• Ana brings in a bit of tea to the library where DonFer and Don Nico are discussing his worries over Fannie. He feels he’s failed as a father. This is proof. Ana tells him he’s really a great dad whose kids really do adore him, but he stops her and yells back that he’s in no mood for her words of wisdom are not about to calm him down. She is embarrassed and excuses herself from the room. Don Nico warns him this is not helping things. Don’t blow up at others; it’s not their fault. It’s his to handle, he reminds his son as he storms out of the room.
• The doorbell rings a minute or two later. Ana races (NOISILY) to answer it. Bela breezes in. She smiles cattily. “—Oh, I didn’t realize you’re also the majordomo of the house.” Ana takes her leave and adds a sarcastic aside about leaving him so that DonFer's novia will be able to calm him down instead.
• Bela reminds him he’s got a meeting with some pretty important clients. His daughter will be able to manage without him for a while. Her hands are all over him….his mouth, his cheek, his upper arm. (Gawd the willies she’s giving Viewerville-- just watchin' those shiny nails flicker and flit around him…..) He tells her he isn’t in the mood for that now. (Guess they're giving him the willies now, too.)
• Once outside the door of his house, Bela pauses to tell herself that if she can handle the (Fannie?) problem for him then he will love her. (Block-headed Boob!)
• Inside in the kid's play room, meanwhile, Ana keeps trying to reach Fannie on her cell. Just then a text comes in from Seb about a change in his dance classes, but he’s got to have his dad’s signature on some paperwork because of them. She decides to enter the lion’s den and confront him with Seb’s problem. When she explains that she okay’d the dance classes, he yells back that she’d overstepped her authority with his children. “--Oh yeah? You’re never available so somebody had to step in.” “--What? Is everyone out for me or what?” “--Didn’t you learn your lesson with Fannie?” “—I’ll solve that problem myself!” “—Welll, I hope that you solve the problem with the Fernando I met yesterday. You’re Don Hielo again. I thought you were giving yourself a chance to be more sensitive. Yesterday.... that was the one and only time I proved that you actually had a functioning heart!!!”

Jardinera, what a delightful recap and asides! "Bruja de Bela" has a certain flair to it. Thanks!
I am loving the pacing of this novela. My favorite scene was the cognac Jazz inspired interlude between Ana and Fernando.
The one thing I did not like was when Ana told Fernando she had a novio, too. Will that come back to bite her when the pressure is on and Fernando might not have the energy/will to fight off Bruja de Bela and could use "Ana has a novio" as a convenient excuse to not put up a fight? Just thinking . . . .

Jarifa: Thanks! I am sure I missed the part where she told Fer she had a novio herself. She told the little conscience fairy, I remember. The rest was lost in translation and SN's mumblings/grumblings I suppose. Again, it's bad enough with CC's when SN is involved, but even the Uvideo's noted no CC's were available this episodio, so I had to punt again.

ok what happened is his dad has always 'made' Sebastian take lacrosse as his 'elective' but Sebastian really wants to take 'dance' instead. So for that he needs his dad to sign a permission for him to change his 'elective'. The final argument was her telling Fernando that she 'allowed' Sebastian to take dance instead of lacrosse, to which Fernando went totally irate saying she had no right to do that... but then again he tells her the kids are HER responsibility, sort of giving her the decision making... so this is why Ana got mad at him.
Bella Skank came to the house bringing the contacting info for Leon. Fernando wanted to run to Leon's place right away. But then Bella Skank told Fernando about the meeting scheduled in an hour so he would not have time to deal with the Fanny/Leon situation. I bet she wanted to 'handle it herself' from the get go so she would win points with Fernando... (GRRR!!!)
It was intersting Fernando refused to kiss her after the kiss the night before. When both Fernando and Ana went to bed they both were enchanted with the memory of the kiss... Even before that, when he was staring at the portrait of he and his wife together, he kept saying 'what a kiss!... what a kiss...' and then told his wife 'you did this, didn't you? just like you keep doing so much for us...' (i bet he knows that the late Estefania would approve of Ana much more than of Bella Skank because of how well she gets along with the kids.

I was so mad that they brought in Tinkerbell. My husband already has a low opinion of TNs in general, although he's never watched one, and he just happened to come in when she's talking to it, and my husband notices it and just went off on how ridiculous these shows are and this just confirmed it. I tried to explain that it wasn't a character and it was just her talking to herself, but he didn't believe me of course. UGH!

Cathyx: Figures that the hubby would walk in at the most inoportune moments--on the other hand, this tn is definitely teetering on the borderline for being deemed Saturday AM fare. After the lighting strike silliness, Tinkerbell didn't bother me much, since it gave me a glimpse into Ana and how she coped as a child in the orphanage. It was cute when Bruno inquired who she was taking to and she fumbled a bit and just said doesn't matter in the end I'm talking to myself.
Does Fanny have two cell phones? Guess one for work and one private when Fernando was calling for Lola. I don't understand why Fernando needed to call Isabela for the address of Leon when he had just gotten the phone number for him from Betty.

Weren't we told a while back that there are no more kid-targeted novelas and that everything now is going to be for 18-24 and 18+? I guess then that the kid actors end up in novelas meant for everyone older than Nando.

Tofie, I was wondering about Ana's phone also. Fernando called her when he thought she was Lola, and again as Ana. Didn't her name come up on the screen as Ana when he was calling Lola?

I haven't yet figured out how to enable the captions on my TV, so I try to translate during episodes with my trusty Spanish-English dictionary. I appreciate being able to compare your clear synopsis to my own feeble attempts at translation.

So Fer, who NEVER drinks, readily accepts a cognac from Ana. And it took so little to get him drunk! At least he's a goofy romantic drunk and not a mean angry drunk or sobbing wreck drunk. And he likes to dance!
I'm looking forward to Isabruja trying to fix things with Fanny. I'm not sure she has any idea just how much Fanny hates her!

Wouldn't Fer have Ana's cell phone number anyway since she's responsible for his kids. And secondly, he called Ana on her cell, but isn't that the same number as Lola's? Did she get a new cell phone.

I agree about the phone id issue. Fernando being the 'prepared' guy he is, should have had the number come up as 'Ana' when he tried to dial Lola's number.
About Tinkerbell... I don't mind that as much as I minded the nightmare stuff...
btw, Ana told her 'tinkerbell' character that she had not seen her since the 'home' years... so 'Tinkerbell' was her imaginary friend while she was growing up in the 'hole' and the one that got her through the loneliness and emptiness of 'love' she experienced as a kid... the tinkerbell character was nagging that Ana was the one not in touch.

My theory as to why Fernando is so dead set against Sebastian taking dance classes: consider that Fernando as a younger man was much like Nando. Studious, nerdy. We also found out after he'd been drinking that he likes to dance, but represses that part of himself and hadn't danced in years. I suspect that when Fernando was a teen, he was bullied over liking dancing. So this is a triggering issue for him, and he worries the same might happen to Sebas. Being bullied might also explain why he buckled down so hard with the studying and working. That was a way he could ignore everyone and make a success of himself.
I like your idea, Julia... and my brother was bullied about having to wear glasses at school, and also orthopedic black boots... so i can see both Fernando and Nando being bullied like that. Good point.

When Isabruja had her little tantrum and threw the wedding magazines off the table, I wondered at her motivations for wanting to get married and why Fernando specifically. She said something like "EVERYONE is married!" with a lot of frustration and aggravation that she slept with Fern and he still didn't call. I wanted to give her some free advice about selling cows and giving away free milk, but it's also possible I just wanted to call her a cow.

Sadly, there is still the idea that a woman is nobody without a man. We can get MBAs, PhDs, MDs, or whatever after our names that that still is in too many people's minds.

I think in Skankho's case, she may want to check her personality before wondering why she's not married. Take a few tips, again, from the master Leon. Take it slow...stop giving off the I'm available, desperate and want a man vibe.
And I don't think she's either someone who has had to deal with no being taken seriously because she's smart or successful. If anything, throwing yourself at your boss week one isn't a way to be taken seriously. I'm guessing she wants the rich hubby so she can then just be the wife of the manor, live the social life and be "important". She and Graciela on Robo would be chums easy.

If Isabarnacle has trouble keeping a man, it's probably because the stench of desperation is so off-putting. She plastered herself all over Fer and dragged him into bed without giving him the slightest chance to want her first. What part of that is supposed to make him committed to her?
Playing hard to get may be a stupid game but actually being at least a teensy bit harder to get is probably a sound strategy.

I think Isabela an opportunist (rich or poor doesn't matter) and clearly did her homework on Fernando. She knows there is a window of opportunity and she has to move fast. So far, other than a few meek protestations from Fernando, her assessment of his vulnerability was correct. What was not expected is a nanny entrenched in the house loved by the children and a fantasy for Fernando.

Reason: simply por interes, as they say ("Show me da money"). Jennifer won't know what hit her. There is a middle aged blond lady now running around in the labyrinth credits, maybe that's her?

J, sometimes it doesn't matter what you look like. And guys with the "nerd" image will always be picked on.
But look what Bill Gates became. Nando should think about that.

It would take such a tiny, tiny makeover for Nando to blend in better. It would take less effort than his current style! He could wear the same pants and shirts, just lose the bowtie and leave the shirt untucked with the top button unbuttoned. And don't put any product in his hair. Maybe splurge on a new pair of casual shoes. I haven't noticed what shoes he's wearing.
My instinct is usually to say that people don't need to change or fit in, but Nando is SO MISERABLE and seems like he'd rather be left alone than express his style. Sometimes you have to do the pragmatic thing and save your ideals for a different battle.

Big Fer didn't try very hard, as I recall. Nando tried to talk to him and his response was basically "just keep studying; you don't need to have a life or be happy!" So I'm not impressed with his efforts to understand his son's problems.
The Lion King sure was ready to go with those candles and the massage skills. What's his deal? Does he bring over a lot of ladies for a candlelight massage? Or is he like an optimistic high school freshman who totes a condom around in his wallet just in case? He was like, "I better buy candles. Someday I will use them"?
Julia, you never know when you meet a girl and she wants to see your etchings. You have to be prepared.
We have enough conformists in the world, I admire Nando. Stay true to who you are. Never change because society makes you feel ashamed of who you are. There is an awful lot of bashing on this blog. We are all entitled to our own opinions of course, but perhaps we should open our minds a bit more, maybe it is time to think outside the box. How is it a positive message to say "Change yourself just a little bit so everyone else will like you." What a way to empower the bullies!

Jardinera, thanks for such a fun recap. I try to only watch one show at the time, but since LQLVMR is still going and I wanted to watch MCET, I've been trying to catch up on the main things going on. I especially enjoyed: "That’ll last about as long as it takes her to realize she’s gotta share the bathroom with six hairy beasties who are also strangers" and "Fairytale Theater time for preteens…"
I've been trying to decide whether to allow my 11 year old daughter to watch with me, to work on her spanish speaking skills. I think she would enjoy all the kids' antics, but then we go to the strip club and Bela's seducing of Fer, and she may not be ready for all that yet.

I don't think Nando should change himself, but I think he needs to try to protect himself first and empower himself second, however he can achieve that. Whatever it takes to get some relief; it doesn't have to be a long-term fix. Really I think the teacher and school should address their bullying problem, but I don't know how much control Nando has over that. He should tell Ana what's going on, at least. Or Fanny should pay more attention; she seems to have more influence at school.
My new idea for Nando is that he needs a secret identity. Ninja or something. He could take martial arts and parkour training, then go about in disguise in the evenings, kicking ass and righting social injustices. I think this would give him more confidence when dealing with his knuckle-dragger classmates.

Thanks, J., for the nifty recap. This episode had some very good moments -- always at its best with SN and JS and the kids in action. The silly little touches are goofy but this novela takes no mental work. I am enjoying sitting back, not thinking too hard and enjoying these several very good actors try to make the most of the material. Love the kids!
