Qué Pobres, Friday 8/1/14 (#148): Ana Sofia's No-Class Reunion
Emi tells Ahole that if Mom doesn't let him visit Daddy, he'll defy her. Ahole tells him to just sit tight for now and don't let on that they're having these secret conversations. Emi can enjoy his time with Mati, but "don't forget she's on Miguel Angel's side! Be careful!"
The papers are signed. Don Chuy is finally the official owner of the house that's already been rightfully his for a long time. There is much rejoicing. Mati invites them all to dinner at the RP house. Chuy doesn't really want to go, but Mati indicates that she'll be offended if he doesn't. MA says he'll even stay away so that it won't be too uncomfortable for everyone!
Prince Emiliano finally makes his appearance. He greets Mati happily, but snubs MA. "High-fiving is for babies!" (Earworm: "Don't Gimme No Lip Child" classic version or loud. I chose the latter video over better ones because it's subtitled in Spanish!)
Meanwhile, at the art gallery, Ana Sofia is inviting her "friends" to dinner at her place too. I keep thinking she's got something up her sleeve, but sadly, it's only an arm.
Oh boy! It'll be like Leo's wedding all over again! (Minus the guests of honor!)
Alone with Emi, Mati asks why he was so rude, looking at MA "with guns in your eyes." Emi says it's not because of MA, but because Lupe and Chuy seem to welcome virtually everyone to their house except for Emi's dad. "Why do you suppose that is?" Mati probes. Emi doesn't know, but maybe it will make him think. Emi's afraid that Ahole will stop visiting. "He's the best dad in the whole world," he enthuses. Lupe grimaces, overhearing.
At the market, MA again tries to persuade Nepo to give Trofeo more responsibilities. Trofeo complains that Nepo never treats him as a "friend" unless he feels like getting hammered. Nepo laughs. "OK, Trofeo, you're promoted to Assistant Executive Secretary. Make some copies of these papers!" (At least he doesn't make him wear a pink Avon uniform!)
Lupe confers with Mati: Ahole won't agree to a divorce. Mati says hmmm, he told me he would! What a liar! But Mati says she still believes that Ahole was telling the truth about how much he loves Emi! Lupe says the real problem is that Ahole is a bad influence.
Emi has another secret phone call, telling Ahole they signed the papers to own the house. "That's nice, but my house is much better," Ahole replies. He's still working on getting Lupe to move in. "Get along with your mother, I'll get along with my grandma, and soon they'll stop bugging us." He adds, "You're very important to me. I love you even more than I thought."
Then Ahole stops short, bewildered. "What's happening to me?"
Rita's given Chuy enough advance rent to cover several weeks. Chuy gives her the keys, and Carmelita tells Rita to call Gwendy if she needs anything tonight because the rest of them will be away this evening.
Privately, Carmelita says she doesn't want to go to dinner tonight. She doesn't want to see AS, and she's still mad at Chuy for getting smashed with her.
At the RP house, Mati consults with the cooks about tonight's dinner. After she leaves, AS consults with the cooks about her dinner. The cooks wonder why Mati and AS are so uptight about this event!
Lupita takes Emi to school, and he's being a very good boy. He's excited about checking out the RP house tonight and seeing Frida again. But just as Emi leaves, Ahole shows up. Lupe says she's still trying to get an annulment, if not a divorce. She asks, what's the point in staying married now that Mati's overriding the clause? Ahole says this is about being with his son, and he won't let Lupe keep them apart.
Lupe warns that someday Emi will figure out why she married Ahole. Ahole doubts Emi will believe it. He won't leave her family alone like he promised because things didn't work out the way he wanted. Ahole tells Lupe not to count on Mati's help, either. Ahole knows every little thing that goes on in that house, so she'd better not tattle to anyone, or else.
It's evening already. A chauffeur arrives to pick up the Menchacas. (Perla is rude to him. I wish Tomas could see her now.)
AS is waiting nervously for her guests. She is dismayed when the maid opens the door to a chorro of Menchacas. But before anyone can explain, her own swell friends arrive. Porca miseria!
Beba wants to know why the "help" aren't wearing their uniforms. Chuy talks back. There is almost a brawl. Carmelita says they're invited friends of the RP family. Chabelita reacts with shock. (I don't think she recognizes the Menchacas from the wedding.)
AS is trying to disavow the Menchacas when Mati shows up and greets them warmly. She takes AS aside and scolds her. Chuy just wants to go home. Mati says no.
There is some witless classist repartee between the two contingents. Mati announces that this is no way for AS to treat the family who shared everything they had. Chabelita is scandalized to hear that they all lived under the same roof (well, above and below the same roof).
Mati leads the Menchacas to the dining room. AS tries to convince her friends that it really was a penthouse, but these poor people just call it "the roof."
Elsewhere, Nepo tells Diego and Gwendy that his own divorce will be a simple matter. Diego says he doesn't remember his mother. Gwendy asks, why did she leave? Nepo doesn't want to talk about it, and now he doesn't have to, because here's Trofeo. Nepo invited him over for dinner, just to show that he's a real friend. He's also promoting Trofeo to supervisor, for real. ("Supervisor of making copies"? I'm not sure if he's joking again this time or not.)
Back at Nepo's house, Gwendy is happy that Nepo was so good to Trofeo. She tries to persuade him to accept Diego as he is, too. "What do you mean?" Nepo asks in surprise. "Diego's not gay. He just needs to meet the right girl!"
Perla is impressed with the huge dining room. Tizoc plans to get a similar place when he's rich. Chuy points out that he hasn't seen a penny yet. Admiring, Emi says this place is even bigger than his dad's. He can't wait to see the pool.
Mati apologizes for AS's behavior. "We know how she is," Chuy laughs. ("Yeah, you nearly killed your drinking buddy," Carmelita growls.)
Mati toasts to being family. Chuy is overwhelmed by the elaborate place settings, all the forks and such, but Perla still remembers AS's lessons.
Frida comes to the table with hugs for everyone - everyone except Tizoc, who is still wearing his sunglasses. She only shakes his hand. The awkwardness is not lost on Chuy and Lupe.
Mini and Isela are working late. Mini actually wants to do a good job with the magazine. She thinks the way to do this is to find a great cover model, and she has an idea for Isela to help.
We come back to them several scenes later, and Isela says she has her doubts about this plan. (We don't get to hear what the plan and the doubts are.) She thinks they should be trying to get Ahole to give them those properties. Mini reminds her that Ahole didn't fulfill the clause. As long as Mati is alive, Ahole can't give Mini and her mom anything.
Isela says Mati can't live much longer. Maybe they can help her along with a good scare. BOO! "You frighten me," Mini says.
In a non-dining room at the RP house, the swell friends express all kinds of morbid curiousity about living with the Menchacas. Was it like a zoo? AS tries to convince them that Mati is senile and was just babbling crazy talk. Nobody believes this.
AS changes the topic to the Foundation. She feels they haven't been doing as much lately as they did when she was in charge. But she's willing to be in charge again. They just need to have an election.
AS's words are met with strange, distant laughter, as from a worn-out laugh track. It is the Menchacas (plus Carmela) enjoying themselves with Mati and Frida. It's not clear if AS senses the irony.
In the dining room, Chuy can't resist commenting on the fact that Emi cleaned his plate, unlike when he's at home. ("You're cuter when you're quiet," Carmelita tells Chuy.) Emi still wants to see the pool. Tizoc will keep an eye on him. Mati sends Frida along too, supposedly to help them find the light switch. Subtle, Gram!
(The pool is the place in the first episode when AS was doing a benefit for homeless dogs, featuring a fashion show with fur coats, which was disrupted by Frida and her "activist" friends, who ruined all of the furs, and AS ended up in the water.)
After making sure Emi knows how to swim (MA taught him at Chalma, but Frida wasn't there), Frida tells him not to jump into the pool. She and Tizoc take off for a private chat. Tizoc confides that he doesn't like being Tay, but the family needs the money and he could even go to jail if he breaks his contract.
Frida asks Tizoc what he feels for her. Hesitantly, he says that the feeling is something very strong, but maybe it's not love, because it's not as if we think about one another all day long, right? Frida repeats, sadly, "Right. We don't think about one another all day long." Tizoc agrees.
Neither seems happy, and I don't know if they even believe what they just said; but Frida doesn't tell Tizoc anything else.
MA finds Emi standing alone next to the pool. Emi claims not to be angry with MA. MA wants to follow through on his long-ago promise to take Emi to a polo match and even let him ride a horse. Emi perks up, but becomes sullen again when MA says they need to clear it with Lupe first. Emi backpedals and says maybe he'll just go with his father, then.
MA says that won't work. Ahole doesn't like polo, he's allergic to horses, and he doesn't know how to ride. When Lupita comes for Emi, MA asks if he can take the boy to a polo match sometime, and Lupita just mutters that Emi's busy that day.
AS's party, such as it is, wraps up. The swell friends say they'll discuss AS's offer with the other ladies and be in touch.
AS complains to MA. "Why would you even want friends like them?" he asks. AS says "if you're not on the inside, you're on the outside. You're nobody." MA disagrees.
The Menchacas are just piling out of the car. Chuy asks Tizoc never to buy such a large house: "I'll never be able to find you." Lupe says she understands now why it was so hard for the RPs to adjust to having so little.
Chuy thinks they'll probably never see the RPs again, or at any rate it will be less and less. Carmelita disagrees; Mati is different. "True, but no one lives forever," Chuy answers.
(I wish these characters would stop talking that way. Of course no one lives forever, but doesn't it make more sense to enjoy your loved ones while you can, and not bury them while they're still alive?)
The Menchacas' door is wide open. Lupe scolds Perla for forgetting to close it again. The sala looks okay as they enter the house; but beyond that, they all stare in shock. The kitchen's been trashed, and the dining area has been ravaged. Everything has been turned over, tossed around, and smashed.
Next Time: Ahole crows to Lupita about his friendly warning. MA and Saul hope to incriminate Ahole. And Lupe goes to the doctor!

Ana Sofia was dreadfully perfect last night, sucking up to the society bars and denying she knew the Menchacas. I like that we know her backstory as the mortified daughter of a Mexican servant. I hope we find out more about that mother.

Jane, in México an "azotea" is a room built on top of a roof. I think we have referred to it as the "attic" here for a lack of a better term even though it is not under the roof but on top of it. From what I have read this is a popular style of construction in México and other countries as well.

I was so worried that Rita was responsible for the vandalism. I'm glad the previews cleared it up quickly that it was Alejo. But since Lupe will likely keep the truth from everyone, they'll all probably think Rita had something to do with it. We also finally find out what Lupe's health issue is next episode. Yet one more major worry that she'll keep to herself. She and Frida are very alike in this way.

AS was a hoot trying to explain her way out of the Menchaca being there. I'm surprised Chabella didn't recognize them, but then again when has Chabella ever paid attention.
Doni Mati is so very sweet and I loved her dinner with the Menchaca all eating together. I too wonder why Tizoc kept his sunglasses on.
So Ahole is sticking with his game plan to intimidate Lupe. I too was afraid that maybe Rita had trashed the Fonda, but it was Ahole, what a putz. His anvil can't come soon enough for me. Poor Rita will be the obvious suspect in the destruction but since she has no motive even the lately dense Lupe should figure out it is the evil one.
The moment Mati invited the Menchacas to dinner you just knew we were headed for a disaster. Watching AS while her snooty "friends" went on and on with their gibes about class I couldn't help but think she was getting a hard lesson. She also has to be in mortal fear that if they all knew her background they would trash her the same way. I think MA sort of pointed it out to her after they left on their broomsticks but she is still in denial.
I wonder why Nepo is so reluctant to talk about his wife and why she left. Somehow I can't see him as a wife beater but it must be something.
So we have Jack Nickleson at the dining room table and I couldn't help but wonder if he doesn't want Frieda to be able to look him in the eye. They are both so incredibly immature I just can't see them getting together with any chance of success. Maybe Frida can give the baby up for adoption and years later we can a sequel. LOL
Like a lot of the rest of you I have a problem with the heavy foreshadowing that Mati is not long for this world. This is supposed to be a comedy so one of the most endearing character should not buy the farm before then end.
The moment Mati invited the Menchacas to dinner you just knew we were headed for a disaster. Watching AS while her snooty "friends" went on and on with their gibes about class I couldn't help but think she was getting a hard lesson. She also has to be in mortal fear that if they all knew her background they would trash her the same way. I think MA sort of pointed it out to her after they left on their broomsticks but she is still in denial.
I wonder why Nepo is so reluctant to talk about his wife and why she left. Somehow I can't see him as a wife beater but it must be something.
So we have Jack Nickleson at the dining room table and I couldn't help but wonder if he doesn't want Frieda to be able to look him in the eye. They are both so incredibly immature I just can't see them getting together with any chance of success. Maybe Frida can give the baby up for adoption and years later we can a sequel. LOL
Like a lot of the rest of you I have a problem with the heavy foreshadowing that Mati is not long for this world. This is supposed to be a comedy so one of the most endearing character should not buy the farm before then end.

Perla wasn't rude to the chauffeur. She was just really excited and loud. She greeted him smilingly and then yelled for the others that the driver with a cute little hat was here for them, then yelled again to hurry them up, saying he had a face of "being upset" that they were taking so long.
The one who was rude was Lupe. She barely let MA get the words out about his invitation to Emi to the polo match before she snapped, "he's busy that day" without even waiting to hear WHAT day. So she's not speaking to him, but that was rude and uncalled for.

I don't feel sorry for Lupe about what Alejo is doing to her. She was stupid enough to marry him without a contract knowing the type of person he is, so now too bad, deal with it.

Oddly enough, it never occurred to me that Rita would be a suspect in the vandalism. My first worry was that something had happened to her.
Decie, Nepo is probably embarrassed by the situation with his wife. Whatever her reason for leaving him was - and I personally find him insufferable, so that's reason enough for me - he probably feels that it reflects poorly on him.
Or maybe he doesn't know why she left. Even if she'd explained it to him, he's a really terrible listener.
I'm also recalling that for a while he didn't think Gwendy was classy enough for his image. If Rita is indeed his long-lost wife, was she talking about becoming a wrestler back when they were married? I can't believe Nepo would have liked that.
I assumed that Tizoc left the sunglasses on because he was hiding from Frida. Not to mention he thinks he's cool, and cool people wear sunglasses indoors, right? Just like poor people always have a penthouse on the roof.

Julie, I really enjoyed your recap. I loved your "chorro de Menchacas". Thanks. I got the same idea as you that Tizoc left his sunglasses on to avoid/minimize any contact with Frida.

I've been thinking that maybe Nepo is the poor man's counterpart to AS. Both of them have rigid views of life and their place in it and what they expect their children to be. I didn't have a problem with Nepo in the beginning but his character has changed as we've gone along becoming less likeable.
Emihole's relationship with MA has been poisoned by Ahole but also by Lupe and MA has no idea. For a few seconds last night it looked like the little boy was more like the child we first met but Lupe made sure he disappeared once again. I'm wondering how on earth the three of them will ever to be the real family the little guy wants after all this.

Julie thanks so much for this recap. It was great. And like you, I'm impatient w/Lupe being completely passive w/Alejo. At least tape what the beast says to you so you can get a restraining order.

Well, maybe they're not foreshadowing. Maybe they're just messing with us. In fact, this seems like a great opportunity for Mati to play a mean trick that could cause Ahole to slip up and show his hand prematurely.
That is, if Mati shares her husband's bizarre urge to teach people lessons by playing cruel games, she can plot with Chuy and her doctor to fake her own death. I've been waiting for something like that ever since Querida Enemiga, when I was so sure Fafy was faking death so he could incriminate his evil little chippie.

My comments are a combination of Thursday and Friday's episodes:
1. I'm thoroughly convinced that not only does Vilma not have two brain cells to rub together but doesn't even have one bouncing around in her head if she believes the huge pile of BS Ahole was giving her about how he cared about her.
2. Emilahole needs a reality check about how his father really feels about him. I saw something like that on an episode of "Law & Order" where a boy was defending his mother until he overheard her telling the police they could do what they wanted with him because he was nothing but a pain in the butt. Maybe if Emiliano got the same treatment he may go back to being a good kid.
3. I was thinking the same thing about how Tizoc wearing his sunglasses at the table was bad manners.
4. I think Ahole is behind what happened to the restaurant so he can use it to get custody of Ahole, Jr.
5. I wanted to smack Isela for wishing death on Grandma Mati.
6. NOTHING BETTER HAPPENED TO GRANDMA MATI! She's one of my favorite characters too and she better be alive and well in the finale.

I don't think they can kill off Mati because THIS IS A COMEDY. More likely she will be part of the cliffhanger of the last few episodes. Like dangling the baby over the edge of the cliff. They will never drop that baby. Just my opinion.

Lupe is just like Isabel from PSMA and Blanca from La Impostora: INCOMPETENT.
She just doesn't have the backbone to stand up for herself against vile people like Ahole, who's got co-conspirators plotting to destroy people like her and others, who get in their way.

On the other hand, PESE was a great comedy and Antonia didn't survive it. But she was killed off much earlier in the story (not during ultimos when it hurts most), and her ghost brought justice.

Not to quibble, but there are those of us (like your blog mom) who do not know these shows by their acronyms. What was PEAM? PESE? If you could spend a few seconds more and spell them out I for one would be very grateful.

Personally I loved 'Por ella' and think Jaime did a much better job in that show. I find him a cipher in this production, the only thing that seems to wake him up is opportunities to speak barrio slang.

Personally I found Frida's and Tizoc's little talk on the steps very touching. It conveyed the sense that yes actually they do think about each other all day (not that that is an adequate indication of love). But they do seem very torn between their great attraction and affection for each other and fear of it not being reciprocated. I think Tizoc kept his shades on because he was intimidated by the class differences at least as much as anything else. All the Menchacas (except Perla and Emi, bless their enthusiasm!)had reservations about entering the RP world.

Thanks Julie, great job. I can't believe the nerve of Alejo. He's not messing around. And I'm glad for the previews that we know it was Alejo who ordered the hit job. Not sure that Lupe will admit to her family that he was behind it. But I can't see that she would let Rita take the fall for it either.

Ann, I loved PESE (Por Ella Soy Eva). Except for the surplus of heavy-handed sermonizing, I felt that it was a work of art.
It was "silly" in that Jaime Camil did a lot of "antics." He seems happiest when he's doing antics, so if you don't like antics, you won't like all of his work.
(The actual dressing-as-a-woman part of PESE was not especially silly, IMO. It was less silly than, say, people not recognizing Clark Kent as Superman. The silly stuff was all the crazed ad-libbing which some people love and some people hate.)
On the other hand, I detested PEAM (Porque El Amor Manda) so much that I never could remember the full name on my own; only the acronym. I don't even feel like talking about all the different ways that PEAM annoyed me.
I thought Que Pobres was going to be a stinker too, but I have been delighted with almost every aspect of it. Camil is giving a mild performance, but he's playing a mild role. MA is the least challenging character of the bunch. (Even Perla is more interesting than him because I keep wondering how she doesn't die of stupidity.) He's not hilarious, but the other characters are; and it's sort of interesting to watch JC taking a back seat.
OK. I guess I'm agreeing that JC isn't adding much to the show, but on the other hand I don't really feel his absence.

Also, "I keep thinking she's [AS] got something up her sleeve, but sadly, it's only an arm." LOL, but I agree. Though AS deserves all the scorn and embarrassment she's suffering….I want to see her friends "get theirs" too. In a way, it's actually bullying as well. AS should be smart enough and secure enough not to be affected by it. I'll repeat myself and say that the RP's have enough money that AS could do nothing and at some point her "friends" would be approaching her again for the millions she could donate.

I loved Por Ella Soy Eva. It and Jaime Camil are what made me want to watch this one. Unfortunately, I was in the middle of Santa Diabla and tried to watch this one on demand but got behind. I am so kicking myself for missing

Do whatever you want to do, totally own it, act like you're above it all and too cool to need anyone's approval! All the groveling just shows that you are lower status! Idiot!
I don't understand how Frida spends so much time moping in her room when she has that gorgeous pool to swim in. That was a good scene with Tizoc on the stairs, where neither of them was willing to admit their feelings. I think Tizoc needs to be the one to break the ice there. When they broke up, he was all "I'm too hot stuff right now to be with you" and Frida was all crying and saying she thought they were serious about each other and he was all "pffft." So right now it is his job to make things better. He should know from how things went down that Frida was really into him, and that she would be the one doubting that he cares about her.
MA may not be the most exciting character, but at least he doesn't cry all the time. An empty tear bucket filled with points just for that.

At first I thought Mini's "clever idea" for the magazine cover would be to model for it herself, but then why would she need her mother's help?
Barbara, I like your theory about Rita too. And you're right that AS could just wait for her swell friends to come to her. But she still looks as though she's up to something. Maybe she is. Maybe that air of desperation is calculated, and she's leading them into some kind of trap.

About Jaime Camil. I like him when he is not trying to use the slang here. It's just not natural to use it so much when you didn't grow up using it and his excessive intonation makes it sound even more forced. Then there's his glee at the use of a wiwi and the way he acts like it makes him sound from the barrio but "a wiwi" is basically a censored version of "a huevo" which can't be used in the telenovela, so he's basically excited to use kids slang. I guess it is supposed to be cute how hard he tries but it makes the character look dumb.
Camil doesn't need a schtick to be likeable and I'm not sure he or the directos are aware of that.
Besides that complaint, I really loved this telenovela. It was filled with great characters and actors and I thought everyone did their best. I haven't liked a cast this much since Gancho and I've never liked a Rosy Ocampo comedy as much as this one. I liked PESE but the psa did go on too much sometimes and I hated La Fea Mas Bella. PEAM was terrible and I'm just not into Osorio's comedies.

Thanks for the recap and comments! i have to admit i am getting a bit deflated by this one... I really want A=hole to begin suffering his anvils before 10 minutes from the 'FIN' and I totally agree that Lupe's slapping MA like that with 'he is busy that day!' and her attitude were totally out of order and unlike her...

What I have really enjoyed about this production is what a balanced exercise in storytelling it has been. Even though Jaime Camil is the male lead, his character MA ( who is pretty goofy sometimes) has not been written to monopolize every scene. The subplots have been so well written that they have maintained my interest and have added to making this a very coherent show.

Thanks for mentioning the subplots, Jarifa. I've seen some TNs where the subplots truly contributed nothing, because they weren't even tangentially related to the plot, and/or because the actors just didn't have what it took (talent, motivation, direction, charisma, whatever) to make us care.
I also like that this TN has a good enough cast and strong enough writing that they don't need to be carried by the male lead. MA is there to tie everything together, but he doesn't have to go in up to his neck into everyone else's business like Chucho did in PEAM.

I see this as an ensamble show where MA and Lupita play the anchors of the two types of families that we are introduced to be our main players. En PEAM Chucho was supposed to be our main lead and everyone else was a secondary player. The problem is that neither the writing nor the acting made him charming enough to be all over that story.

I agree, Julie and Jarocha... and seems like JC does not mind that role. he is not selfish for screen time.

I agree about the ensemble feel of this show. A strong cast, solid writing and no real off the rails plot lines. It is what a good comedy should be and rarely is. I gave MCET a two week shot but finally quit. It is exhibiting all the worse traits of novela comedies. Loud characters, some over the top acting and despite the fact that Salinas and Paulina Goto are charming and doing a good job I just can't get past some of the slapstick. Then again it is an Osorio number and has all the hints of sleaze that his things usually do. I am going to miss this one especially AS and Da Vinci

I was tempted by MCET until I saw it was Osorio. I mostly liked Una Familia con Suerte, but the storyline about Violeta (the crazy homicidal mother) really bothered me. Then Osorio brought us a couple more crazy dangerous women, including a homicidal mother, in PEAM. That was enough of that. I don't know if it's just a coincidence or if it's something that Osorio is actually interested in, but I've had enough of the psychotic women.
I don't think Veronica was originally supposed to end up being an homicidal psycho in PEAM but the extension and the changes that were made after dropping a character changed her storyline.

Julie, thanks for a great recap. I'm another viewer who has enjoyed the entire cast, not just the leads, in this TN. Mati, one of my favorites, needs to stay alive.
I'd like to see Emi, after a discovery of Ahole's true character, make the overtures to MA. Let MA hold off a while before he bonds with Emi again.

Well, there are nicer ways to get rid of a character. Did Osorio spend even five minutes thinking about this? He could have killed her off by having her bright green cell phone handset explode, or she could die of food poisoning (spoiled organic food!). Or get killed doing something heroic. Or hear the calling and join a convent. Run away and join the circus. Whatever. No need to have Valentina kidnapped a second time by a different crazy woman. That's lazy!
