La Gata #13 - Wed 9/17 - La Novia
Lorenza is sending Virginia to Italy with "Tia" Eugenia (Monica's mom).
Centavito tells Esme (who's holding Principe! Drink!) that he heard from Virginia that Pablo's missing her something awful. Centavito says Pablo's parents have been trying to keep them apart. As he asks about her illness, Mariano arrives.
Suddenly, Augie has guards…and they come in and hold Damian while Augie punches him and then points a gun at him. Damian calls his bluff and tells him to go ahead, call the cops, 'cause he's got plenty to say. Augie threatens to have him thrown in prison and calls the cops to tell them to send someone over. Damnit. There goes his law degree.
Mariano tells Esme he's there on Pablo's behalf…but to ask her to forget about him like he's forgotten about her. He tells her not to come by the house again.
Pobre de Mercedes…she visits Damian in jail. He says he just couldn't take Augie's nasty attitude. So now, he's facing charges, including attempted murder. Damian tells her there's nothing she can do, and besides, Augie has too much influence. He asks her not to cry. At least he's behaved like a man, though he's sorry for making her cry. He asks her to be brave and not say anything to Esmeralda. He figures the charges will get dropped in a few days.
Gata cries while Centavito and Principe comfort her. Principe walks away when Centavito says they can only trust Virginia and they're supposed to meet at the café tomorrow. Gata can have a webcam convo with Pablo. Principe already knows she won't be there.
Oddly, Lorenza and Augie don't believe that Esme is really pregnant. I ignore the whole classist conversation.
Mariano calls Pablo to tell him that he should forget about Esme. She's with someone else. Pablo doesn't believe it. Mariano says she'll be sending him one last email to explain that she couldn't handle the separation . Pablo doesn't believe it. He's sure something happened and he'll never stop loving her.
Lorenza brags to Augie about how they're going to fix Virginia before things get as bad as they've gotten with Pablo. Italy will cure her of wanting anything to do with poor people.
Augie gets ready to write his son a Dear John letter in Esme's name. About which, Lorenza brags to Mariano. She goes to tell Virginia to hurry up. Like Lorenza, Mariano is allll worried about Augie's horrible beating and all the danger he's in. But Augie's not worried, 'cause Damian's going to jail for a good long time. He tells Mariano that he doesn't believe for a minute that Esmeralda is pregnant. He describes Damian's claim as a blackmail attempt. Mariano says if she is pregnant, it's Pablo's for sure, and Pablo has to know, because that changes everything. So Mariano has one tiny grain of decency in him?
Pablo, in his spacious New York Apartment, with multiple canvases scattered about the floor of his special painting area, books and notes scattered all around a coffee table larger than most of the shacks in La Barranca, sits at the window reading a book in a catalog-worthy pose, the perfect picture of careless affluence. He jumps when he gets an email and…can't believe what he's reading! She's breaking up with him. She just missed him too much and she started dating someone else. Someone "humble, but decent." Nice touch, Augie. As a last favor, she asks him to be happy, like she is now. Pablo cries tears of pure dolor into the cushions of his cream-colored sectional.
Augie thinks there's no way the baby is Pablo's, and even if it is, they'll never accept it! Mariano says he only went along with the plan because he thought it was best for the family, but the idea that she could be carrying a baby that shares their blood…. Wow. Is Mariano actually having some decent, uncle-ly feelings towards the alleged baby? I'm impressed! Not that he thinks Pablo should marry her, but he thinks Augie needs to help her. He's sure, SURE, that it's Pablo's baby. He doesn't know Esme well, but he can tell she's completely innocent. He suggests giving her some money and is surprised to hear that Augie gave money to Rita. Augie tells him to go, but Lorenza swans in, announcing that it's time to take Virginia to the airport. She notices the tension.
Centavito and Esmeralda decide to stop waiting for Virginia and call the house.
Virginia is crying at the airport, begging for a chance to at least say goodbye to Carlos. For the second time this episode, I've heard Augie refer to "those people" as "chusma" which is, once again, another nasty name for "the poor." I thought it had some other connotation, but it's just another synonym for rabble, riff-raff, lowlifes, etc., I suppose the implication being that they're not just poor, but that they make trouble. You know, not like all those nice poor people who know their place and stay on their side of town. Once again, I'm baffled that Virginia shares any DNA with Augie and Lorenza. They hand her off to a flight attendant while she cries.
The nosy maid gloats as she tells Carlos that Virginia is gone to Italy and won't be back for a long time. Carlos, however, realizes immediately that her parents did this to get her away from him.
Esme goes to the little chapel in La Barranca and begs the Virgen to make Pablo write just one more letter to her. La pobre Virgen…people expect so much from her!
Pablo goes to a grand cathedral with gorgeous stained glass and actual pews and prays to the Big Guy for some guidance to help him figure out how to live without her.
Pablo writes to Augie telling him he really needs to see Esme, just to look in her eyes and hear directly from her that she's ditching him for another guy. He begs Augie to arrange the trip. He swears he's never known love for another woman and he can't eat or sleep. The sadness is killing him.
Augie tells Lorenza that Pablo is stubborn and he's going to come back. Lorenza fusses that if he comes back, the jig is up and they'll lose their son.
Mercedes is determined to go to Augie and beg him to pardon Damian. Jarocha encourages her. Mercedes makes the mistake of thinking that maybe she can appeal to Lorenza, you know, woman to woman. Sorry, Doña Meche, but that would be more of a woman-to-heartless block of ice conversation.
Rita tries to get Gata interested in some milk. Principe licks his chops. Gata is feeling a little pukey. She's weirded out that Rita is treating her differently since she had the fever. I somehow missed that nobody bothered telling Gata that the doctor said she might be pregnant. Which means she also hasn't gone to get an actual test done. Rita rubs some more salt in Gata's wound, saying rich guys don't marry poor girls. And even when they do, like Gata's dad married her mom, it's not like it does any good. Her mom ended up with nothing, dead from pain. Now, Rita lets it slip, telling Gata she's not likely to find another Rita to take care of her baby. That's right, Gata, you're having a baby. "Ask Jarocha if you don't believe me." Gata runs right out to do that. Jarocha says yes, the doctor said "maybe." But Jarocha thinks it's for sure. Gata thinks this is great news! Pablo's family can't reject her now! She's having Pablo's baby! "I'm going to make him respect my rights!" Um, what rights? "My rights as Pablo's wife and the mother of his baby." "Having his baby doesn't make you his wife." Ohhhhhhh, but our somewhat dynamic duo pulled a Romeo and Juliet and got themselves wedded and bedded before he left for New York! Jarocha thinks Gata's gone nuts. Gata flashes back to their sepia civil ceremony, just the two of them and a judge (no flashback to the nookie…we're still having to assume that was a given). Jarocha still looks doubtful. She doesn't see the point of it, or the point of keeping it a secret. She asks for more details…who married them? Where are the witnesses? Gata says it all happened so fast…Pablo saw how upset she was and he arranged the whole thing to calm her down.
Pablo meets with his advisor to ask for a leave of absence. In English. He's sure he'll be back. His advisor looks doubtful. And really, he only wants a few days or maybe a week…that's a bad cold or some nasty food poisoning. Just go, dude. You don't need a leave of absence for that. The advisor talks him into staying until exams are over in a month.
Jarocha doesn't think Gata's "marriage" is legit. She didn't even have her birth certificate. Gata swears Pablo's friend, the judge gave them a certificate and she's going to go shove it in Augie's face and tell him she's Pablo's wife and the mother of Augie's grandchild. Show it to Lorenza instead, attack her with a hug while screaming "Suegra!" (mother-in-law) and we can sell tickets.
Gata carries Principe (drink!) into Rita's hut and grabs her marriage certificate.
Pablo mopes on a bridge in a light grey 100% wool cable-knit hoodie- $99.95. Also available in charcoal and navy.
Jarocha goes to tell Meche that Gata now knows she's pregnant and is thrilled. But also…Gata married Pablo before he left! And, she's going to go shove the marriage certificate in Augie's face! She advises Meche to wait to go talk to him…because who knows how they're going to react to Gata's news. Mercedes won't wait.
Damian gets shoved around in jail by a group of guys. Silencioso thinks Damian reminds him of himself when he was a prison noob. So he pulls rank and tells the guys to leave Damian alone. He doesn't have to tell them twice. Well, he does, but only twice. Silencioso warns Damian that he won't always be there to protect him. Silencioso explains that his name is Silencioso because this is pretty much the most he's talked to anyone in the 20+ years he's been there.
Fela has a birthday party for her doll baby. With a party hat and an iced something with a candle on it and everything. No piñata, though. What's a party without a piñata? Fela cuts the pastry in pieces and lays it out on plates. She decides to save her piece for her baby's father. She has a funny feeling he'll be back with them soon.
Silencioso tells Damian he'll get used to being there. He advises him he'll need a smoke every now and then, but Damian says that's not going to fix anything. He doesn't think he'll be there long. "That's what I thought, and it's been twenty years. I showed up like you one day, alone with my thoughts, about to get beaten up. Now that I'm getting out soon, I'm feeling sorry for the guys just getting in." Damian says he'll post bail and get out. He just disrespected a lawyer is all. "A lawyer? I killed one once. Some of them dishonor the profession." Damian lays out his charges and says he attacked the guy in the process of defending a woman's honor. Silencioso warns him it's going to be better in there to either be friends with everyone or pretend to be. Damian gets very passionate about how a lot of the men in there were pushed to what they did. The bell rings for everyone to get back to their bunks for inspection and Silencioso gives him a bit more advice about acting like someone who deserves respect and making the guys think that he has more influence than he does. He tells Damian his real name--Fernando de la Santa Cruz.
Gata goes to Pablo's house and tells the nosy maid she wants to talk to Augie or to Lorenza. She's chattery and saying it's happy news. Nosy maid doesn't let her in the gate as she goes to tell her mistress. Lorenza is furious that she showed up, but agrees to go talk to her, mostly because she's looking forward to heaping verbal abuse on her. She tells the maid not to let her in. "She'll never set a foot inside." Lorenza goes out to the gate. Gata makes the same misguided assumption Mercedes does…that a mother would understand her. She tells her that she's going to have Lorenza's grandchild, and Lorenza certainly can't reject her now, right?
Mercedes visits Damian in jail. She tells him she went to see Augie, but he wouldn't see her. Damian isn't happy. And he doesn't think he has anything to ask Augie's forgiveness for. He asks her to stay away from Augie so she doesn't end up in jail too and warns her that if Augie does anything to her, he'll kill him when he gets out.
Lorenza reacts predictably. And then she says she will only recognize grandchildren that come from her children's marriages to others of their class. Gata says she luuuurves Pablo. And that the doctor has confirmed her pregnancy. She's not there to demand anything but her rights as Pablo's wife. She flashes her marriage certificate.
Tomorrow: Pablo returns.

I loved all your snark! Thanks for giving us a full recap. Every Wednesday we keep saying discussion and there's always important action!
La Paloma- I want to thank you again for yesterday!
"perfect picture of careless affluence" "Principe licks his chops. Gata is feeling a little pukey."
"Pablo mopes on a bridge in a light grey 100% wool cable-knit hoodie- $99.95. Also available in charcoal and navy."
Thank goodness Carlos put together the Virginia connection but bummer, love and lost in a matter of days.
Esmeralda - I don't know, Pablo called it a quickie
Lorenza - he was emasculated how did this happen
Damian - perhaps you were a little hasty
Silencioso - look who's talking
Fela - set a fine table
Virginia - a country looks like a boot, what does a boot look like
Augie - this catfishing is fun
Mariano - chameleon
And I forgot to mention earlier-Mariano is kind of a wild card for me. He's been a spoiled brat and a little conniving, but it seems to me he could go either way. At this point I think he's redeemable.
When I saw Pablo wearing that hoodie with his perpetual pouty pout, I nearly lost it. I loved your reference to his catalog shoot. The guy would be a perfect model fir Abercrombie.
Well, the writers pulled avast one on Ughie, Lorenza, and us with this sepia , secret wedding. Therefore, Kitty might truly have a bun in the oven.
Well, I have to get to work. Thanks for a terrific start to my day, Kat. you are funny, smart, and talented.
Thanks for this rip roaring account of last night's activities.
To gringo (from yesterday) yeah, lets start making the anvil for the sneaky servant. I'll meet you out on the patio, and we can start collecting used frying pans and stuff to melt down. I'll bring some Off in case the mosquitos are bad.
I don't remember having to present a birth certificate to get married. Of course, that has been a long time ago, so maybe my memory is failing me. However, I think the recurring subject of birth certificates must be a hint of things to come.
It seems to me that a blind women is also a recurring theme in tn's, as though the writers are saying that blind people "see" things about people that sighted people are "blind" to.
So Srta Kitty is now Sra Pablo? (Calling Esme "Miss Kitty" reminds me of Amanda Blake on Gunsmoke. Although we didn't understand it at the time, she was America's favorite hooker.) Mariano is on Esme's side? Oh, gosh, going to need a score card to keep all the personalities straight.
I hope that Augie winds up in that prison were el Silencioso and Damian are being held, and that the prison population descends upon him like they did on Damian.
Tofie: "A country looks like a boot, what does a boot look like?" was great.
Thanks again, 5ft. I just love your ability to craft these recaps in such an entertaining and accurate way. It really adds to our collective enjoyment of the whole thing.
David
I miss one day and all hell is breaking loose. Gata pregnant AND married? Damian in prison with El Silencioso? I'm stunned.
It always amazes me how dark and gloomy episodes can have such bright and funny recaps. Examples
Decent uncle-ly feelings
Woman to heartless block of ice conversation.
They got wedded and bedded before he left for New York.
No flashback to the nookie. What?
We got cheated.
We can sell tickets. LOL
$99.95 Also available in charcoal and navy.
David---Good idea. There's plenty of room out on the patio. We can
set up shop in the corner and we won't bother anyone. However I think that we will have to round up a lot of stuff to melt down as we will need more than one anvil for this bad bunch of people.
Tofie---A great list as usual. You always make for a great morning.
I did notice the thought provoking line which said that there were books and notes scattered around a coffee table larger than most of the shacks in La Barranca. So much wealth and so many in need.
I was thinking about the Damian confrontation and found myself saying---What are you thinking? You go to the rich man's house and attack him. You're studying to be a lawyer---What Are You Doing??? You're throwing it all away! But later he meats Silencioso in the jail and it all made sense. Team #1 has just formed.
I'll be counting the minutes to tonight's must see tv.
the gringo
I wonder how long (or even if) it will take for these two to find out that the woman Damian was defending and basically ruined his life for is the (somewhat) silent one's long lost daughter.
I couldn't believe the naivete and real innocence of Esmeralda. She actually believed that Pablo's parents would be jumping for joy at the news that she is pregnant!
Gracias, tofie. "Augie - this catfishing is fun" The thought of Augie writing those emails...grosssssss! And he added that 1 slang word that made me think he'd analyzed the previous emails for tone. Blech! w/r/t Pablo, his attractiveness wanes when he's moping about his terrible situation...in his swanky bachelor pad which I assume has a fully-stocked fridge. Sell some of that art and send the money to Gata, will ya?
Gracias, Susanlynn. Sometimes the jokes are just lying there, waiting for me to pick them up. The massive difference in living situation between Pablo and Gata and how much they're playing that up makes me wonder what message they're trying to send...because the one I'm getting isn't very flattering for Pablo!
Gracias, David. I think that not only have they been keeping Gata's birth certificate hidden, but she's been going by the last name "Cruz" rather than "de la Santa Cruz." Perhaps Silencioso has such a hoity-toity last name that if Esme has the same one it would send up too many red flags.
Gracias, Niecie. Yep, all hell is breaking loose for sure. Now, if we can just get Silencioso actually breaking loose....
Gracias, Anon@1246. That's what it looks like.
Gracias, gringo. I feel so bad for Damian. He was doing the "right" thing, at least until he got the fistfight started, and I can appreciate that he's not going to back down from that, but yikes! He and Silencioso need to get into specifics about which dastardly lawyer put them both in there so Silencioso can help him get his law career back on track.
Gracias, Anon@0152. I share your surprise. And after all these years of knowing Pablo, and especially with the most recent events, I would have thought that Gata would have a better sense of how manipulative his parents are. I'm ready for the Silencioso-Damian team to start making things happen!
First, somehow, Pablo locates a friend who is also a judge who will marry them without all the necessary paperwork and without alerting his parents...but this guy wasn't around earlier when Pablo needed help finding a job?
Then, even though Pablo and Esme know they're legally married, they both believe all the lies that the other has "moved on"...because it's just soooo easy to get out of a legal marriage? All those emails and verbal messages only make sense if they're only dating and don't have a legal binding contract. Pablo thinks something has gone wrong, but it doesn't seem to occur to him that the "something" isn't his relationship...pardon, his MARRIAGE...to Esme, but might have something to do with his scheming family?
And in all his self-induced drama over what's going on with his WIFE nobody bothered to mention to him that they sent his sister to Italy? That should be adding to his suspicions.
Thank you, thank you! That was a 10ft recap!!!
Somebody said "how can such a gloomy episode make for such a hilarious recap?" I don't know-- but it's a relief to read all the fun comments and know that I'm not suffering in the gloom alone.
By the way did anybody notice that when Lorenza was on the phone telling someone they were sending Virginia to Italy to keep her away from Carlos, the Jamaican maid was standing on the stairs in the background, as if listening. Maybe she will become an ally to the lovebirds.

Gracias, J, that would be Vero, the cook. She's been very quiet so far, but sometimes it's the quiet ones you have to watch out for! She and Omar(?) the chauffeur tend to stick to their jobs and stay away from Lorenza. I'm remembering the day Pablo and Augie got into a shouting match and Vero was standing by Virginia downstairs until Lorenza sent her back to the kitchen. You maybe on to something. Also, I love her outfits. They're a much needed spot of color in that cold, drab house.
Multiple meanings:
Novio/novia...could be boyfriend/girlfriend, fiancé/fiancée, or bride/groom
Hombre/mujer...could be husband/wife or man/woman (as we'll sometimes hear "mi hombre" or "mi mujer" meaning my man, my woman with emphasis on the MY)
No way to spin this any other way:
Comprometido/comprometida...fiancé/fiancée (estar comprometidos = to be engaged)
Esposo/esposa...husband/wife
un matrimonio...a marriage, but also a married couple. Un matrimonio feliz = a happy couple. Un matrimonio joven = a young couple. El matrimonio Negrete = The Negretes (the husband/wife pair, not the whole family)
Marido...husband
casados...married
I know I'm probably missing a bunch, but these are the ones off the top of my head. Who else has some?
I hope it doesn't make me a perv, but I feel cheated out of a love scene. I hope there are some!
Not much to add except I like the analysis and comments about this boda secreta.
Oh and yes, Kat... They are keeping this moving and I love it!
I can't believe they didn't tell anyone. Well, I guess I can given Lorenza's attitude. But Pablo thought his dad was on his side... So he didn't say anything to dad? And yeah, given Lorenza's attitude why are they believing all the lies?
I do applaud Televisa for creating a novela that shows this much socio-economic contrast. That alone has me hooked. Oh, and Gata, the doctor didn't confirm anything about your "embarazo" because you haven't really been tested yet.
Mariano is giving me whiplash, is he good or bad? I am rooting for him, but I don't know if I should. Also Ines. Yes she is a spoiled brat, but she is pretty decent so far.
I agree with you guys. Though the marriage looks like it's real, Pablo and Esme is not acting like it is, maybe it's because it was a civil marriage and not a church marriage. For a college degree student, Pablo is not so bright. If Esme "broke up with him", He should know that it would include divorce papers, not just an email.
Esme said she didn't want to take Pablo's money until they were married. Since they are, Pablo could have asked for money from his parents and lie and say they are for school, but use it to give it to Esme or put her in a nice apartment or pay for her to go to school like she wanted.
Also, I feel like Esme could have found her father. Rita has been saying her mother is dead. Esme could have asked for proof like a gravesite or death certificate. She could have done some background digging on Rita if Rita won't give her any information. Rita also said that her father is a marquis. There shouldn't be too many marquis. Rita and Esme's relationship is unhealthy. Rita acts angry one minute and then nice the next.
Okay, venting complete.
Shiftwork has turned me into an unintentional lurker and I'm not happy about it because it causes me to miss commenting before a new show starts. (Like now, it's 15 minutes before showtime urrrrgh!!
Gracias, Foxy! I have noticed that native English speakers who don't have a lot of exposure to Spanish have a hard time pronouncing the "t" and vice versa. There are no dentalized ts in English or hard ts in Spanish (I don't think...someone correct me if I'm wrong!) but the letter is the same and it's hard to train your brain to pronounce it differently. Using the wrong "t" sound at least doesn't render someone's speech unintelligible, but it marks the speaker as a non-native-speaker (like last night's conversation). And at least the pronunciation of the "t" doesn't affect the meaning of the word, unlike the "r" for example (pero vs. perro).
Also--addition to Vero the Cook, I think the chauffeur also has a spark of decency: he seems okay with driving Virginia to see her friend Carlos.
