La Gata #6 - Mon 9/8 - La Tormenta

Gata got a job selling lottery tickets.  Centavito got a job washing cars at a parking lot.  High fives!  They joke about how Centavito showers every day and Gata showers more often since Pablo started giving her soap and shampoo, but she tries not to use a lot so she doesn't run out.

Pablo's dad gives him a lecture on how to be a proper snob.  Pablo says he thinks he's starting to understand.  His dad is thrilled and moves on to talking about Lorenza's desire for a Pablo-Monica union.  Pablo keeps the innocently bland look on his face and his dad never notices he's being mocked.

Gata has found Principe.  Crisis averted!  No sign of Doña Rita, though.  Too bad, so sad.  La Gata and Centavito work on setting out various things to catch the rain.  Centavito doesn't think Rita's on the level about begging for money.  He thinks something else is going on.

Pablo's dad keeps going on until Pablo can't take it anymore and calls it illogical.  Pablo says he'll make his own marriage choices, thank you very much.  And Papi threatens to withdraw his financial support.  Well, Pablo's heart is no whore, so that's not going to work.

Pablo worries about Gata in the rain.

Gata and Centavito are having to figure out how to deal with all the rain coming into Rita's front room while Rita and Ines huddle under blankets telling Gata and Centavito to save all their stuff.  Gata finally makes the executive decision that they've got to get the hell out of there.  Rita refuses to leave and Ines is on her side, because they both think saving their stuff and protecting their house is more important than not drowning.

Pablo's entire family, except his sister, mock him for being worried about Esmeralda.  Virginia understands his concerns. Pablo decides he's going out to find her and Lorenza says she hates Gata.

Centavito, Esmeralda, and Damian are trying to get people huddled into a little chapel.  Esmeralda tries to get Fela , but she's too scared to open the door and Esmeralda has to bust the door down.

Rita and Ines are still arguing about leaving and what stuff to grab.  Ines gives up and runs out with a piece of plastic over her head, so it's left to Esmeralda to go in and argue with the stubborn old bat.  Annnnnd…she gets hit in the head by a falling piece of wood.  Because no good deed goes unpunished.  Pablo arrives just in time to see that and try to drag her out, but she won't be deterred from getting Rita the hell out of there.

Lorenza is still fussing about Pablo being out in the rain, in danger.  She swears she wouldn't be able to live if anything happened to Pablo.  I'm sure your daughter loves hearing that.

Post-rainstorm, the La Barrancans work on getting their shacks re-assembled. Not Rita, of course.  She's too busy being crabby.

Virginia is having the chauffeur load up some suitcases in the car.  Pablo comes out of the house and she tells him she's collected some stuff she thinks might be useful.  He's on his way out to go help some more.  He tells Virginia it's too bad the rest of the family isn't like her.

Pablo shows up and gets an enthusiastic greeting from Esmeralda.  He makes sure to tell her that Virginia sent all the loot.  Esmeralda insists that it's the neighbors who need to work on the houses, even though Pablo wants to help.  She says they'd be embarrassed to have a rich kid carrying scraps for them.  She tells him it's not the first time this has happened.  She'll meet him later at their regular spot.  I think she's being silly.  He can stand in for useless Rita.  Esmeralda starts opening up the suitcases and handing things out.  Rita, of course, is as grabby as ever…for THAT she can be bothered, but not for helping.

Later, on the hillside, Esmeralda talks about needing to repay him and his sister for everything they gave them.  Pablo is sure she gave everything away and didn't keep anything for herself.  He thinks she's looking skinny and wants to take her home and feed her…and Principe.  She tries to refuse, because his mother's a harpy, but he says the harpy will have to get used to it at some point.  Principe fusses, so she leaves him in the car.  (You can't leave him in the car!!!!)  Pablo's ready to walk her right in the intimidating front door.  She's impressed with the foyer and brushes off the bottom of her shoes with her hand.  He tells her she can have whatever she wants, but she's asking for beans, tortillas, string beans, and eggs.  He takes her to talk to Vero, the cook, and see what she's making.

Meanwhile, the nosy maid has gone to rat Pablo out to his mother.  "And he said they were going to eat together in the dining room!"  The horrors!

Vero serves an excellent cream of artichoke soup that is completely ruined by Pablo's shrieking harpy of a mother.  Virginia hears her all the way up in her room and goes downstairs to see QTH is going on.  Esmeralda's not exactly rushing to get out like Lorenza keeps telling her to, but she won't look Lorenza in the eye and she won't let Lorenza talk smack to her, either.  Lorenza goes on and on about how horrible, to find this girl sitting at her dining room table and how Pablo and Virginia are going to fill this house with poor people.

Ines walks along with Garabato (who's still wearing his hat) and mentions that Esmeralda is out with her rich boyfriend and will probably end up getting pregnant.

Seriously, Ines?  'Cause right now that boy's mother's not even letting her have soup, much less access to…uh...well…you know.  After some more screeching by Lorenza, Virginia butts in and asks Esmeralda if she's hungry.  "Yes, miss.  The rain brought down a lot of houses and I've been working on getting them put back up and I haven't had time to eat anything."  As far as Virginia is concerned, that settles it.  This is a humanitarian issue and the humanitarian thing to do is sit Esmeralda the hell down at the table and have Vero bring her all the food she wants.  But Lorenza isn't known for her humanitarianism and wants to bodily throw Esmeralda out.  Pablo finally gets in her face and says he hoped she'd come to her senses, but since she's not, then he and Esmeralda are BOTH leaving.  Hopefully they'll hit a drive thru.  She had, like, one mouthful of soup.  Even a girl this spunky can't sell lottery tickets and rebuild shacks on one mouthful of soup.  Not to mention how much energy it takes to deal with Doña Rita!

The next day on the hillside, Pablo mopes.  He tells Esme he's grumpy because of his mom…and the lecture he got from his dad earlier.  Even though his dad didn't bother with insults.  He promises to be with her forever and they smooch.

Virginia is sitting at the breakfast table alone when Lorenza stalks over to her in a really creepy way.  Virginia says she can smell her perfume, and the residual anger from yesterday.  No, I'm not joking about the anger thing.  Lorenza tries to sway her daughter by spouting the same paranoid classist nonsense she always does, just…in a sweeter tone of voice.  "Those people" have bad habits.  If you let one in, they'll case the joint and come back later with friends to rob us.  Blah, blah, blah.  When Virginia says that Esmeralda has a right to be in the house because she's Pablo's girlfriend, Lorenza drops the sweetness and goes back to screeching.  She swears Pablo will marry Monica.

Pablo wonders if Esmeralda will still want him if she has to wait a really long time.  Like, until he has a job and some stability.  Dramaturgy and Literature…that could be a very long wait.  He just needs to know she won't stop loving him and she won't leave him.  I'm barely listening to the conversation…it's really just a lot of "I love you/no I love you more" "I don't deserve you"  "We're meant to be together"…it's just setup for smoochies now and separation later.  Oh, she appreciates the poetry of Rafael de León.  So, take that, Lorenza!  Poor people CAN appreciate poetry!

La Barranca.  Esmeralda brought Doña Rita some herbs for a tea.  Rita's walking better with the cane Esmeralda rigged for her, but she disses it.  Don Italiano shows up with flowers and I ignore him.  Rita scolds Esmeralda and tries to order her to accept the flowers or else…she'll throw her out of the shack.  Rita invites him in for coffee and Esmeralda takes the flowers and tells him to come in as rudely as she can.  Rita tells Don Italiano that the flowers remind her of the flowers people used to bring Gata's mother at performances.  "She was a real artist!  Not like the ones today who say they can dance and since, but don't even know their 'do-re-mi-fa-sol'!"  Gata cowers in the kitchen, thinking of Pablo.

Mariano gets home and Lorenza asks him to spy on Pablo.  He doesn't want to be Pablo's nanny, but he says he'll talk to him.  "You're the older brother.  It's your job to look after him and advise him."  Mariano actually seems to be making some sense as he says Pablo knows what's good for him.  Lorenza breaks the news that Eugenia will be going on vacation and Monica is going to move into their house while her mother is gone.

Rita tries to insist that Gata "attend to" their guest.  Don Italiano tries to say that he was drunk the other night and wants Gata to forgive him.  He doesn't like her arrogant attitude and says she needs to make some effort if their friendship is going to work.  "The problem is, I don't have any interest in being your friend."  You tell him, Gata!

Mariano, being the cad he is, realizes that Monica being in the house is Pablo's opportunity to seduce her.  And THAT is something that's definitely in his wheelhouse, so no worries…he'll take care of it.  Pablo comes downstairs and claims to be going to the movies.  He yells at Mariano for asking if he's going out with the Wild Cat.

Don Italiano is ready to give up, but Rita pleads for patience.  La Gata is like a wild animal.  "Who refuses to let me domesticate her. Like she's so great!  Stupid kid!"  Sorry, just had to share that with you, so I could share the horror.  After that I tuned out Rita's whining and Italiano's further smarminess.  Rita shoves Gata into the kitchen and demands she smile and make coffee.

Lorenza: classist lines.  Mariano: suggestive lines about Monica being in the house.  Pablo says Lorenza will be happy to have Monica around, since she's always complaining that Virginia is too busy with "her stuff."  Meaning, doing things to help the less fortunate, which of course Lorenza can't even understand.  "It's like she's not even my daughter!"  Filing that away for future reference, just in case.  Mariano says he will have to be Monica's galan, since Pablo's not interested.  "Lots of women find me irresistible."  Pablo says if that's Mariano's attempt at reverse psychology, it's a total fail.  Mariano offers to go to the movies with Pablo, and off they go.  Lorenza gloats from the top of the stairs as the boys leave.  She goes inside and does an interpretive dance about Monica marrying Pablo and how rich Monica is because she's her father's only heir.

Tomorrow: Mariano lectures; Monica attacks; Esmeralda confesses; Pablo punches.

I love Virginia.

And I'm glad that Lorenza's too snooty to ever consider an alliance with Rita, because THAT would be the partnership from hell.

Thanks, Kat! I don't know why, but I found Maite busting down the door to be an awesome scene. Subtle comedy. Har Har.

The cheese and cliche is strong with this one, but I love it.

But on a serious note, the reality of the garbage dump community it so very real. It's jarring to me sometimes.

Oy vey. "the reality is real" talk about bad writing. It's too early for deep thought. I'm trying to express that it's odd that they are so clichéd in most of the show, but for me at least, every time we have the garbage dump scenes the reality of those people's plight intrudes on the fantasy. I guess it's supposed to, but when I see that and Maite's costuming it seems almost insulting to me. Like they couldn't even bother to portray these people as real and normal. Whose side is Ms Latoodle-oo on? Personally, I think she's a closet classist.

5ft, thanks for this overview with your usual snark.

I think Lorenza is a stupid classist. If she had any sense, she would display outward friendliness and pseudo-concern for Esmeralda while plotting against her behind everyone's back.

I had hoped that Esmeralda would appear to agree to Rita's order to serve the Italian Stallion coffee, then "accidently" dump it in his lap.

So far, Monica is a benign element, but I am afraid she will swing toward the bad side.

I don't think it was particularly smart for Pablo to bring Esmeralda into the dining room knowing how his mother felt. I think he could have accomplished his goal a whole lot easier feeding her soup on the back porch or something. A tactician he is not.

David

Thanks, Kat for hitting the high points and painting details in between.

I vote for Lorenza being snobbier than the "cloob" ladies in QPTR. I almost choked at your "interpretive dance" description for her final gloating speech. That foyer with its acres of marble and a few scattered pieces of furniture!!??

The soup sounded wonderful. Not sure if Esme drank it from the dish because of hunger or lack of training with utensils.

Great Kat.

"so it's left to Esmeralda to go in and argue with the stubborn old bat"
"Hopefully they'll hit a drive thru."

Sara, "Whose side is Ms Latoodle-oo on? Personally, I think she's a closet classist." I thought the same way with CI and continues here. Unfortunately it works for her. What plays, insanely, is a caste system.

Lorenza - phooey, marry for love and attraction, I'd be an old maid

Mr. Lorenza - my rules or I take my ball and go home

Pablo - what if I hose her off on the patio first

Virgina - I'm blind not deaf mom

Esmeralda - just a minute I need to wash off that filth your mama spewed

Rita - drown bitch

Pizza Man - beginning to think gata has bad taste in men

Mariano - what's in it for me

Principe - SOS

Thanks 5ft Diva. You had several great lines today. -- Rira and Ines huddle under blankets telling Gata and Centavito to save all their stuff. What? We'll
stay here in bed, you guys do it.
--- I loved, even a girl this spunky can't sell lottery tickets
and rebuild shacks on one mouthful of soup. Not to mention how much energy it takes to deal with Dona Rita. -- Virginia can smell her perfume and the residual
anger from yesterday.

I hope that there won't be a Monica pregnancy in the near future. I know that she will be turning it on to get Pablo all for her own.

I know that it would be a cruel thing to say but if Pablo wanted to be free of any Monica interference, all he has to say is that you're not women enough to compete with Esmeralda. That would be the absolute end of any present or future Monica problems.
However I am afraid that this nothing will come between us talk
will fall by the wayside in the near future.

Sara---Are we on the same wavelength? The bust the door down
scene was terrific, just perfect. I was yelling Go Girl, Go Girl!

Sarah---I know how you feel, others too about Maite's attire---
but there is no way on planet earth that a film studio is going to cover up a beautiful young goddess in long sleeved raggedy shirts and pants. Not even in a dump, unless a few female directors are hired. Then maybe there will be a little less emphasis on well girlie/womanly charms.

Tofie---You're killing me! Hose her off out on the patio first.
Virginia---I'm blind not deaf mom.

Must see tv---pizza man goes down
the gringo

I don't understand why Esmeralda even needs Rita anymore. Just go stay with Fela. Her place had less water in it than Rita's did during the storm. Well, it did before Esmeralda kicked the door in, but still with a little scavenging could have a much nicer pad and without the heavy panting of pizza man.

Oh, Pablo, why don't you take Esmeralda to a movie and buy her some popcorn, milk duds and a coke. She should be able to sit still for a chick flick.

Even though they're basically the same character, Pablo is so much more likable than Octavio was in Corazon Indomable. Pablo wants to marry Esmeralda because he loves her, not to get back at his disagreeable relatives, as Octavio did. And I don't believe Octavio even ventured out in the tropical storm to check on Maricruz, whereas Pablo was more concerned about Esmeralda.

The scene where Esmeralda got hit on the head with the flying board was pretty scary (great sound effect). Where I live in Florida, flying debris is a real threat during a hurricane. A friend of mine was nearly whacked by barrel tiles flying off a roof.

The pizza man should have brought a large pepperoni instead of flowers.

Pablo is tons better than Octavio! I hated that twerp.

Gracias, Sara...Maite busting down the door made me think of the first Resident Evil movie, with Milla Jovovich in that short dress with the combat boots. I think it was the boots. And the kicking. There's something about the dump, and using the actual location, but then stereotyping the characters. I agree with you. I think she's a closet classist and when I heard Gata's line from last night about how Pablo shouldn't be helping, that it was going to embarrass people to have him there, I thought "Oh, she just laid out the perfect excuse for people who don't really want to help. 'Poor people don't really want your help. It hurts their feelings. Go about your business.'" Maybe I read too much into it, but at the very least, it was careless writing. It also made me wonder...here they are taking over people's actual homes, but what did they do to contribute to the community? Did they just "use" or was fair compensation offered? Just borrowing someone's house to film in is fine for student or low-/no-budget films, but if the production has money behind it? That ain't right! Anyway...just wondering.

Gracias, David...high five to everything you said.

Gracias, Paloma...her little twirl in the foyer with the fan with the thought bubble, was just ridiculous! And you could fit at least four of those La Barranca shacks into the foyer. That one rug that's so precisely placed in a rectangle of tiles that's just the right size for it bugs me. It makes me want to kick over a corner just to mess things up a bit!

Gracias, tofie..."just a minute I need to wash off that filth your mama spewed" was my favorite, but I'm with you on all of them!

Gracias, gringo...oh, I would bet a pizza from a reputable establishment not run by a sexual predator that Monica is going to get knocked up. And I'd throw in some breadsticks that it's going to be Mariano's spawn. I wonder if that would make it look like Pablo's in a DNA test? I have to admit, if I were costuming this, I would put Maite in pants and long sleeves for the dump scenes, sorry, gringo! But when she's out and about town, there's no reason for her not to wear skirts. I do miss her pink shoelaces, though.

gracias, Aleta...bringing the pizza, I love it! At least it's useful! What? He thinks they have a vase in that house?

5ft, thanks so much for the great recap! After reading that this show is filmed in an actual dump, it does add pathos to Miss Kitty's situatin. She said in the People interview that Univision wouldn't pay for her to have a tetanus shot before filming all those scenes scrabbling thru rusty garbage. Hello, execs, get the girl a shot!

Also, whoever first mentioned Miss Kitty's dental hygiene, I wish you hadn't because that's all I can think of when she and Pablo kiss....
Meow.

J in Oregon

sorry JnO.

Gracias, J...I'm surprised that Televisa's insurer wouldn't require that the entire cast and crew be up to date on their tetanus shots at all times. Accidents can happen on set, even in what looks like a safe environment. Why not be prepared? Oh, well...that's me thinking logically.

Speaking of classist statements: Maite could have paid for her own tetanus shot. Heck, she's a TV star with a million Twitter followers!
(Maybe she submitted an expense report and they wouldn't cover it.) I don't imagine the people who really live at the landfill are getting any tetanus shots.

Aleta, you're not wrong! Maybe I'm making an incorrect assumption, but I would also think that she has the money to pay for one herself.

Thanks for this recap, Kat. I didn't see it, but could picture it. I had to laugh when I read about the big rain storm and the galan worried about the heroine. I had to do a double take that I hadn't opened up a CI recap by mistake. But as noted, this galan actually got off his butt to go see how the heroine was during the storm, versus that good for nothing (but kissing and making babies) Octavio from CI.

Nope. The people who live there aren't getting shots. That's why they wear clothes that cover their limbs, and why they often still get sick anyway. Yeah, that's one out of pocket expense I would have taken on, no matter what. :)

J. in Oregon---I mentioned dental hygiene but I don't think that I was the first. Anyway sorry that the smooch scenes are messed up for you now.

Pablo better than Octavio? Now he is but just give him time to run off the rails. I'm sure that he is going to mess up big time. Every night that I watch the episode, I cringe thinking when Pablo's going to head South.

I want to see Esmeralda and Virginia to become best friends. I hope it's soon. The writers could really expand on that.
the gringo

Oh, Pablo will run off the rails or he wouldn't continue to insist she save her self for him for an indeterminate time period. Just wonder, instead of shooting him, Esmeralda will try to run him down with a shopping cart.

I too think Esmeralda and Virginia should be introduced. They both need a friend.

I've asked myself a hundred times
Why didn't I go to acting school.
This guy is on top of the world
with love scenes with two goddesses in a row and money to boot. Hey, Maite in dirty pants would be ok for me, I wouldn't complain.

I'm really going to feel bad when
Monica puts her moves on him and Maite's tears will start to match that rain storm last night but in
the meantime I will enjoy watching pizza man go down,
the gringo

Eleane Puell (Mara from DQTQTQ) and Fabiola Guajardo (Brigitte)are in Yo No Creo en Los Hombres. FG's name is Isela and EP's name is Clara.

Gracias, Vivi...I only wish she'd let him be as useful as he wanted to be, but oh well.

Esme and Virginia would be such awesome BFFs! That, I would like to see! Plus (no offense, Pablo) she wouldn't be invested in making Esme over, she'd just accept her as she is and offer support if she *wants* to change.

I never liked Octavio. Pablo I like, from the beginning he's been sweet. As has been mentioned (and I'm too lazy to go back and see who mentioned it), Octavio married just to annoy his family. Pablo GENUINELY loves Esmeralda. And I may be the only one, but he loves Esme the way she is. All the things he's done for her are not necessarily to "change" her. He sees her potential. He thinks every human has the right to know how to read and write. I like to think the bathing thing is not an attempt to change her, but protect her from germs.

I LOVE the idea of Virginia and Esme as best friends!!

Aleta--I completely agree with you about Maite being able to pay for her own shots.

Thanks so much, Kat.

I agree with those who feel that Pablo is so much better than Oblivio. During the rainstorm in CI, he seemed to have no concern for poor Mari and her family in their leaky shack. In fact, it seemed that he only invited Mari into the house when he was in the mood for a little love. What a jerk. Pablo seems to have a good heart and really seems to care about Miss Kitty. He just is not very proactive or pragmatic. As to his double major..teehee..very practical. It reminds me that one stipulation of paying for our daughters ' college educations was that they would have jobs after graduation. The elder was a math and computer science major , and the younger was an elementary education major. They both got jobs immediately after college. My friend had a different point of view. She wanted her son and daughter to live their dreams...a nice idea. The son majored in film.....surprise....no luck getting a job , so he went to the police academy and is now a cop. The daughter majored in acting...guess what....she became a yoga instructor. Then, she went back to school and became a social worker. Perhaps, Pa lo should take some accounting electives.

I noticed that Rita helped herself to a suitcase and a blanket, whereas Gata took nothing for herself. Well, we all know that karma is alive and well in novelas and what goes around finally comes around at the end. The evil are punished and the good rewarded...unlike real life.

That foyer...what is up with that foyer? Lorenza has an enormous mansion , but she seems to spend most of the time sitting or standing in that foyer. Odd. Maybe she feels as if it is a stage for her to make her proclamations about class distinctions.

Gracias, Susanlynn! I know I'm picking on him so badly for his choice of major, but I think you hit the nail on the head when you said he's not proactive. If his attitude is that he'll finish his degree and then a job will drop out of the sky for him...that is SO not going to happen, whether he majors in literature or law. If he wants to write poetry for a living, there's nothing stopping him from starting on that right now and I don't think his lack of a degree will hold him back. I've never judged a writer based on their degrees or lack thereof!
