La Gata #44 - Thu 10/30 - La Enfermedad
Fernando is upset about the earlier incident with Fela out on the lawn. He tells Mercedes what happened. Those "gente" (people) are more like "bestias" (beasts). He keeps backing off on the "revenge" but then something else happens. Fernando is feeling overwhelmed and he's angry that they would accuse her of theft when they're the thieves.
Pablo insists on going to get his car to take the baby to the hospital, whether Esme likes it or not. He tries to pay Meatball for the armload of stuff Meatball brought over, but Meatball won't accept it. For no good reason, and with no clear logic, Esme accuses Pablo of having done something to the baby, of trying to hurt them to get back at Silencioso for wanting revenge on his family. And then, once Pablo is gone to get his car, she leaves with Meatball. She won't listen to Carlos, either, about the baby being Pablo's too. "He lost that right when he let her get soaked like this."
Pablo calls Mariano.
The doctor checks out Leti and he can't even finish before Esme is already freaking out and begging him to do something.
Pablo tried to go back, but they were already gone and Rita wouldn't tell him what hospital Esme took the baby to. He complains to Mariano about how Esme should know he wouldn't hurt the kids on purpose and how he's their father too. Mariano, of all people, lectures him about what a "real" father does and basically calls Pablo nothing but a sperm donor. Pablo, being the dip that he is, doesn't remind Mariano that if that's the case it was because of Lorenza and Augie's machinations with the help of Mariano. He just pouts that Mariano is right.
Pablo tries getting Rita to tell him where Leti is again, but she won't, and calls Ines and Garabato to help kick him out.
Leti's just hanging out in the hospital, looking fairly normal, but Esme keeps crying over her. The doctor has the test results and a worried face.
Rita keeps seeing death in the cards. Maria feels bad for trusting Pablo, when he's "crazy." Chácharas thinks Maria was just helping a father have time with his daughter. He hopes this won't harden Maria's heart and says they should pray for "gatita." Pablo comes in and sees them praying, but no one will tell him what's going on.
The doctor says it's serious. Leti has pneumonia. If she doesn't get over it in 7-10 days, she could die. Esme thought bubbles yet again "Pablo, what did you do?"
Rita keeps attacking Pablo and blaming him. Chácharas tells her to leave him alone, his conscience is punishing him enough.
Fernando is upset that he hasn't heard from Esme. Mercedes and Jarocha try to counsel him, explaining that Esme felt smothered in the house and needs her space. Fernando wants to send one of them to convince Esme to come back home. Damian comes in with paperwork, saying that Augie's house arrest has been lifted, but says something about the neighbors….
Augie is yelling at Mariano for screwing up his case. Dorila comes in to bring the paperwork showing that Augie's law license has been revoked.
Pablo searches hospitals for Leti.
Meatball visits Esme and Leti in the hospital. Despite the doctor saying that Leti is strong, Esme has already made up her mind that Leti is dying. Meatball vows to pay for everything and bring in specialists.
Pablo ends up back at the chapel in La Barranca. He prays to God to punish him and spare his daughter.
The doctor tells Meatball they have to give the medication time to work. He tells Esme they have to wait and pray.
Fela is working on a present for Esme. A model of her old house built out of scraps of stuff. It's remarkably accurate. Fernando misses Esme too. Fela calls Fernando her friend and he says he loves her.
Lorenza complains that Augie is only allowed out of his house for medical reasons. Meanwhile, Augie is upset that Fernando gets to enjoy freedom AND Blanca. He laments that he's too sick to screw Fernando over again like he did in the past and keep all his assets permanently. He demands that Lorenza summon Mariano to help him. This gives him alone time to spy on Blanca and Fernando.
Pablo tries to get Meatball to tell him where Leti is. All Meatball will tell him is that Leti is "dying."
Jarocha tells Fernando that Leti is gravely ill with pneumonia. Fernando is sure she picked it up at Rita's and Esme shouldn't have left the house. The babies had gotten used to living a different kind of life.
I'm with Fernando. Pablo keeping her out in the rain may have provided the bacteria/virus/fungus an opportunity to take up residence in little Leti's lungs, but that bacteria/virus/fungus had to come from somewhere. Like, perhaps, a hut with no running water.
Pablo and Meatball keep arguing.
Augie tells Mariano to take over his defense. "I'm trying!" "Stop trying and do it!" Yoda he ain't. Mariano wants to be clear that Augie basically fired him five minutes ago and now he's telling Mariano to do whatever it takes. He wants clarification about "whatever it takes," and refuses to do anything unethical or illegal.
Pablo and Meatball keep arguing. Pablo ends up asking Meatball to talk to Esme on his behalf. Oh, that's going to go well. And Meatball actually thinks he'll be able to win Esme over by being there in her time of need. Pablo gives Meatball money for Leti's care, but he doesn't want her to know until the "right" moment. If there's anything he should have learned by now, it's that there's never a "right" moment.
Esme finally pulls herself together and gives Leti something of a pep talk.
Mariano tries to find out from Rita where Esme is, but Rita won't tell him. Pablo shows up.
Virginia and Carlos visit Esme and Leti in the hospital. Esme is happy to see them. Carlos tells her to trust in God, the Virgen, and the doctors. Esme tells Virginia that she's welcome there, but Pablo isn't. Carlos didn't want to tell Virginia earlier, but now he tells her that Pablo had Leti out late "without permission" and they got rained on. Virginia's reaction: "Damn! My family keeps screwing you over!"
Mariano plays the concerned uncle and Pablo calms down. Rita throws a bucket of water on both brothers and kicks them out. For their sakes, I hope it was clean…ish water.
Garabato's boss talks to Ines and Garabato about some job he wants done. Ines is having some doubts, but that's not allowed. Garabato seems to be trying to cover up the fact that they don't have a solid plan for the job.
Lorenza tells Augie that his trial will be delayed 2-3 months. Augie: "Excellent! That gives us time to mess with the evidence and buy some witnesses!" Well, there's one problem--Mariano refuses to do that. Lorenza blames it on Mariano being in love with "that woman." Lorenza seems fairly unsympathetic when she says that Augie's right, he's got no one else to count on but Mariano. Not even any friends. But, what they do have…are grandchildren. "Dear, beloved little grandchildren." Augie practically hyperventilates with disgust.
Esme wonders if she's being too hard on Pablo. Fernando shows up, wondering when she planned on telling him what was going on. Esme is too embarrassed to accept help from him. Fernando says he sees her and the kids as family and she agrees. She's frustrated that she can't do anything. She lies that the baby just got sick all of a sudden.
Ines is in a hot little red dress as part of the plan for their next job. It's actually not too short a dress, but she looks uncomfortable and keeps pulling it down. She walks into an office or apartment building.
Lorenza tells Augie that Esme's probably as sentimental as all poor people and she'll totally eat up the fiction that Lorenza and Augie have been won over by the babies. And Fernando won't dare get in the way. She's sure this 2-3 month delay of trial for sickness is a good thing. Silencioso can't attack them during this time. And before the delay is over, they'll get Silencioso to drop everything. Lorenza doesn't know how they'll get to the babies, but she says they've got "rights" as the grandparents.
Tomorrow: Pablo suspects; Esme suffers.

Augie and Lorenza were particularly gross today. I also wanted to kick Mariano in the shins.
"I'm with Fernando. Pablo keeping her out in the rain may have provided the bacteria/virus/fungus an opportunity to take up residence in little Leti's lungs, but that bacteria/virus/fungus had to come from somewhere. Like, perhaps, a hut with no running water."
If fault is to be laid at someones feet (not giving irresponsible Pablo a pass), it is Esmeralda. Couldn't she make a personal sacrifice for the benefit of her children and stay in a house made of stone. I'm watching "16 and Pregnant"
I really like Mariano and want Esmeralda with him (won't happen). He knows exactly what he wants, managing multiple competing interest, stretches but not breaks the truth, is way smarter than everyone else and now (except with Pablo & Esmeralda about his love) his cards on the table. He'll defend his father vigorously within the law but will not break it again and he tells mom & pop & Fernando straight up. When he shows up I breathe a sigh of relief and not dissimilar to Damian, whom I also like.
Pablo - as you argue over the placement of the ball, someone else will pick it up and score
Esmeralda - oops, I didn't call work and tell them I'll be 7-10 days late
Fernando - tell her idiot, they're your grand kids
Lorenza - gimme the keys, I'm driving
Augie - ok, but will you drive by Blanca's house, wanna see if she's home
Virginia - we all knew he was kinda off and not enough sense to get outta the rain
Meatball - whew, my card was maxed out
Rita - just flushing my indoor toilet boys
And ridiculous Augie! He and Loathe-renza swear up and down that he's the most honest and upright lawyer, a victim of Silencioso's lies ... yet out of the crooked side of his mouth he's demanding that Mariano do "whatever" it takes (illegal stuff if necessary, hint, hint) to get him out of his situation. Smooth, Ughie, real smooth. Yet, if he had asked this of Pablum (had he been an attorney and not a paint-by-numbers artist), I believe Pablo would have agreed, "Of course I believe you, Daddy, I KNOW you're innocent. What? You want me to bribe the judge and buy some witnesses because you're not guilty so it's okay? Duh-h-h, okay!"
Let's see: jerry-rigged electricity, no running water, made of scrap boards, corrugated tin, and cardboard, leaky "roof" and it's got to be infested, not with that singular fat, shiny-furred Univision rat, but nasty, flea-infested, sharp-toothed rats, mice, roaches, ants, flies and maggots! And she's got the nerve to ask him what HE did to the baby! Esme is stupid, picking up a stupid gene from Fernando who doesn't see this is the time to tell her he and Blanca are her parents and to get her and HIS grandkids out of that shit-house hovel and into a real, safe, secure, sanitary home! FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!
Phew. I feel better!
Esme is further stupid letting meatballs get in between her and Pablo. I don't know why they couldn't let Pablo's rival be say, some equally young hunk that had made it out of the dump, or a guy from a nearby neighborhood or something instead of this uber-annoying, over-baked Pillsbury Dough boy with the frickin' fake Italian accent!
DIE! DIE Meatballs!
And just a personal thing, I don't want Esme with Mariano, not with Pablo's brother, that is just YUCKOLAH! Couldn't they have made Mariano a cousin or a childhood friend of Pablo's: that would be some real competition I could root for.
Ok. Thank you for yesterday's recap, too, Diva. Was still at my conference and couldn't read it till too late to comment. (I might need help knowing how to post my recap later today. I have this fear of clicking the wrong thing and deleting the whole dat-blamed blog!!) See y'all later. . .please, let's talk about this episode. . .the babies in the shack thing is driving me crazy!!!!!
Lila
DUMB.
ASS.
The recap was fabulous, though! THanks for taking one for the team.
I totally agree with everyone that it was stupid for Esme to bring those kids into the dump to live. For me, of the two of them, Esme is the worst parent at this point.
I liked the interchange between Augie and Mariano when Mariano said he wouldn't do anything illegal. Augie looked back at him with an expression that said, "What? But you're a lawyer!"
Meatball creeps me out. I'll bet the money Pablo gave him will wind up in the till of a Mexican whore house.
Lorenza and Augie trying to get the babies? Oh my God. . .
Thanks again, 5ft. You always satisfy, even when the plot doesn't.
David
Augie tells Mariano to take over his defense. "I'm trying!" "Stop trying and do it!" Yoda he ain't.
Add me to the Esme is a fool pool. She should’ve never brought the babies back to the dump and Rita as babysitter makes me shiver. Then she rebuffs Pablo and Fernando, but lets Meatball help.
Loved Rita throwing water on Pablo and Mariano to get them to scram. It was so unexpected, it made me laugh.
Sure hope they do a 7-10 day time-jump.
Comment after comment today about babies and the dump. OK!!! Not a good environment but will you guys answer this question---How many babies and young children are growing up in the dump? Remember some episodes back when Esme brought clothes and blankets for her former neighbors. young children came running from every direction. Where were those young children born? Where did Esme and Ines, Carlos grow up? Did they all die from the dust, dirt, mice, rats, bacteria, bad water etc. Not a good place to live but I am not convinced that little Leti is dying because she spent a couple of days in Rita's shack.
Over reaction. Remember a couple of episodes back when Principe meowed, Esme was on the verge of being thrown in jail for animal abuse.
the gringo
Esmeralda sho is pretty.....stupid.
gracias anon@1024. Augie's getting desperate now! I remember it being sooo important to him and Lorenza that the kids never find out and now they'll settle for not going to jail.
Thanks, Lila. Email me if you need help posting later. Meatball needs to go! He's not even a character, he's a caricature! And when his fake Italian is so bad that even I know it's not Italian, it's just...uuuuuuugh!
Thanks, Sara. I tried. There was so little joy in this one.
gracias, David. Lol, well, Augie's the one who didn't want Mariano working with him so he wouldn't find out the truth. He had his chance to indoctrinate Mariano into how "the law" really works, and he blew it. Now he'll have to deal with Mr. Ethics.
gracias, Niecie. And for yesterday's comment as well! That water bucket trick is supposed to work on fighting animals, but I doubt it's ever worked as well as it worked on the two brothers! What a sacrifice--Rita's going to have to go pump some more water now.
thanks, gringo. You gotta let us vent! It's the only way we're going to survive!
I wouldn't have been be nearly so annoyed if Esme hadn't ranted multiple times about "What did you do, Pablo?" and "This is all your fault!" No, the dump is not a good environment and lots of women raise their children in bad environments, and I don't think they're bad parents for it. Fernando said it best--the kids had gotten used to a different environment. She chose to take the kids back to Rita's, and she knew there were risks to doing that precisely because she's been there before. No one HAD to do anything for the babies to get sick. Germs happen. The roof was practically caving in during that rainstorm were a lot of the houses were wrecked.
So, when she starts talking about how Pablo "did something," and saying he has no more rights to be a parent because he made a bad decision...that ain't right! Pablo doesn't have a monopoly on bad decisions in this relatoinship.
They need to be working together to raise those kids, and they're not. Esme is "the parent" and Pablo is "the sperm donor" and it keeps getting glossed over that he didn't leave them or decide he didn't want them--his frickin' family conspired to make sure he didn't even know he HAD kids. He's like a kicked puppy where those kids are concerned. And now that something really dire has happened, he's taking responsibility for his actions. Unlike Esme, he's not pointing the finger at her and saying "If you hadn't moved them back to Rita's! How dare you! You're an unfit mother!"
And all of that just provokes me to the point that I find myself defending Pablo and checking my temperature.
David
gringo, I agree with you about the many children who grew up in a dump like situation and didn't get sick. (I know because I grew up in a getto.) But, that said, it didn't mean that we were not at risk. And I believe that living in s dump like situation definitely puts one at risk. When I visit my home town now adays I look at some of my former classmates, friends and neighbors and thank God I made it out of there. Sure they survived but in the long run living conditions did take its toll on their health.
I would be interested in hearing your take on the "who's the most blame for the current situation.
Agree that Fernando needs to tell Esme whose daughter she is, so the babies can move back to the mansion.
Maybe Rita needs to visit while Augie and Lorenza are "doting" on the babies? Then she can reveal their earlier evil deeds.
I'm in the grandstand with those that think Esme's decision to take two small babies back to the dump was immature and not based on what was best for her children. However Pablo hasn't seemed to take fatherhood seriously; several times has stood arguing with Esme right over the top of their cribs and never bothered to look down or ask how they were.
I fear Lorenza and Augie may start plotting to take the children away from Esme based on their undesirable living conditions, that would be truly evil.

David, that's a sobering thought.
Sue, thanks for sharing your experience.
La Paloma, thank you! I'm wondering how many things Lorenza and Augie did on their own without the other one knowing about it or whether they were both in it together all the way.
Eli, bummer! This is in no way comforting, but I'm sure they'll continue their same arguments today.
J, that's a good point. It's like he can only focus on 1 thing at a time!
