Weekend Discussion: 2014 Novela Faves
Labels: telenovelas, weekend
My first fave was "Qué pobres tan ricos". I so enjoyed the antics of the pobres and the ricos and especially of Da Vinci. He made me appreciate chihuahuas! I loved the cast, the plot and above all I loved that it was a comedy. I especially enjoyed Jaime Camil and Ingrid Mertz.
Then there was my favorite drama "Lo que la vida me robó". Again the casting was great and even though I quickly disliked most of the characters the writers kept me coming back again and again with their "no holds barred" approach to the plot. They kept me guessing and I enjoyed it. I even liked the ending!

I'm not sure I can pick just ONE fave. I like almost every TN for different reasons.
I would have to put El amor lo manejo yo at the top of my list. Jorge Zabaleta and Maria Elena Swett have massive chemistry together. Coca Guazzini is fun to watch as well.
Señora Acero would come next. I always swore I would never watch a narco novela and I suspect that this one isn't in the same class as LRdS, but I am addicted to it and can't stop watching.
Quiero amarte is shaping up to take third place...but it's still early. I hope it doesn't deteriorate.
I have to put Por siempre mi amor on my list...but more for the recaps and comments. I loved kvetching with everyone about Arturo the dunce and trying to figure out why Aranza thought Feo was attractive.
I liked PSMA for the most part, but I saw the complete episodes. The editing done by Univision made it lose too much logic. LQLVMR had such excellent performances by virtually the entire cast that I predicted that Daniela Castro and Angelique Boyer will probably be cast as mother and daughter again in the future. We'll see soon, I guess.

Marcela is and was a kick-ass, stand-up woman who fought who she needed to in order to maintain what was rightfully hers.
Acacia is a daddy-lice-infested, burning bush for her step-father and that's almost all there is to her.
Speaking of Acacia, did anyone enjoy the Destilando Amor replay?
El Color de La Pasion was just as great too.
I'm almost sure Santa Diabla isn't very well missed LOL.
Lastly, another favorite was the replaying of El Privilegio de Amar that ended before Pasion started. Considering Amor Real is being re-played, I hope for Alborada to be as well soon. It would have been nice for it to have been in the summer so the Holy Estrada trinity would have been played this year.
Sadly, might be short-lived with Globo starting their own Spanish-language cable network next year, they'll probably be reserving their novelas for that venture.
I thought the Televisa novelas on Univision were fairly watchable this year except for "La Gata." Liked "lo que la vida me robo" and "Quiero Amarte" best; and thought "Por siempre mi amor" was the funniest novela I saw this year, though its comedy was mostly inadvertent.
Hated all the narco-novelas this year though "Camelia la Texana" and the first 10-15 episodes of "La viuda Negra" were at least well-produced and acted.
On Telemundo, their Argos productions are all starting to look the same to me, but I liked the supporting cast and villains of "La Impostora" and the protagonists of "Los Miserables." I have nothing nice to write about their Miami productions this year so I won't write anything at all.
If you ask me, I'm surprised Emilio Larrosa is even given the time of day anymore after Dos Hogares and this but I have never heard of a novela being banned (well, Los Exitosos Perez but it is on Pasiones ATM.) It hurts a little because the only GOOD novelas Emilio has done are El Camino Secreto (La Verdad Oculta's original... by him) and Hasta Que el Dinero Nos Separe. Whereas I liked Las Vias del Amor, I will not hold back on telling it like it is and calling it violent, cynical and downright stupid LOL.
Same goes for Mejia; CS '09 , QBA and LT were major floppies and he is still given the time of day.
I did like QBA, especially for JS and PM and the music. Mejia usually gets the music right, but definitely needs better writing.
I am also enjoying La Malquerida and Quiero Amarte. I had fun watching the ridiculous Reina de Corazones. I thought there was some fantastic comedic timing and teaming in Pobres. Loving Jane the Virgin right now.
I did not like any of the characters in Robo, other than Fina, but the acting kept me watching.
and I agree w/you re Marcela vs Acacia
I also loved Mujer de Vendaval I think it is the highest quality telenovela I've seen this year as far as writing and acting except Reina de Corazones which would be better if they hadn't chopped it up.(still not finished with it yet, but I'm loving the actors and writers - soo good)
Sara I kind of agree with you on Quiero Amarte ( which I haven't actually seen for about a week except the wedding that wasn't) but I've already have found myself thinking "oh get over yourselves already and fix your imaginary problems!" a couple of times hopefully either I'll become more tolerant or the story will pick up
I'm actually liking Cosita Linda (which my brain creepily insists on translating as 'sweet young thing')even though it got moved to Unimas and they changed the time the plot seems good so far and the twin thing is very well done which is good because I am easily confused when I can't tell the twins apart and usually stop watching.
Do you offer classes in time management?
You've mentioned your rl work from time to time (and I am sure I was joined by all Carayers in celebrating your prompt return to work after your recent surgery) but I swear I'd never have time to follow, much less recap, as many novelas as you do unless I were retired! No criticism, pure admiration.
And since I do NOT have good time management skills, I probably don't need to know, but:
Where/when are these Brazilian shows aired? Or is there a "safe" download source? Do they dub into Spanish? And, of course, if they are so good, are they ever part of Caray Caray, perhaps as the "and more" of the Telemundo weekly compilations?

I liked the Mentir but the last quarter was a bit disappointing. I didn't see the new ideas.
Now I like Los Miserables, but I have a huge lag in this story because of other activities, about 20 episodes. I love the Hayser-Arambula duo, but I think the violence in this TN is too much.
Oh, and I almost forgot the Yo no creo en los hombres. The best TN is by Televisa in 2014. Realistic happenings, every day there is something new, exciting and likeable characters, innovating TN. Adriana Louvier is amazing and magical. She showed in the QA, she is better actress than Karyme.
The Brazilian tns shown in the US are dubbed in Spanish. Avenida Brazil was shown on Telemundo and recalled on that feed. Lado a Lado and La Vida Sigue were on Mundofox. All are dubbed into Spanish.
I was kinda disappointed with La Tempestad. I wished Uni hadn't cut so much out of it. I hope William Levy does another TN soon. I know he's been doing films here in the U.S.
(I'm just starting to read all the comments. Good topic.)
My Top Favorite for 2014 for pure enjoyment was Reina de Corazones (even the mounting Body Count was fun), produced by Aurelio Valcárcel Carroll with Joshua Mintz. Juan Soler was an incredibly attractive, debonair, suave, sophisticated, evil man in black. He preferred pricking and icing his victims, to the one who sutured the victim's lips shut.
In the class with Amor Bravio, Cuando me Enamoro and ENDA, I'm really loving right now Quiero Amarte, produced by Carlos Moreno Laguillo. The characters are well written and the actors are superb. Also, the various characters' stories are tightly woven in to the main leads. It doesn't sag anywhere.
I watched LQLVMR, but I felt it dragged on too long and characters kept changing character, if you know what I mean.
On Telemundo, I hated La Impostora, but I had to watch until it ended. The ship's cargo container drowning death for the villana, all alone, was just not very satisfying, after waiting all that time through such dreck to get to her mighty downfall. It was a waste of several good actors.
Over on Azteca, I liked Destino a lot, enjoyed Siempre Tuya..Acapulco--even though they were run of the mill boiler-plate telenovelas.
I would like Mi Corazon es Tuyo better if there weren't so many kids and the pace were not so frenetic. I just couldn't get into La Malquerida. I've decided I don't like Ariadne Diaz enough to watch her every night.
Can't wait to see which novela will win the Premio this year.
"Lo que la vida me robó" was good, although there were times it made me tired. Some powerful acting in many roles and enough plots twists to keep my interest.
So Moreno-Laguillo Holy Quartet aside, I really wanna see his shows Bajo la Misma Piel (I've heard all about it and know what I'd be getting myself into) and Suenos y Caramelos.
So about the premio; there are five who due to Televisa's favoritism will qualify only- LQLVMR, QPTR, MCET, La Sombra del Pasado and La Malquerida (they always throw in one who never stood a chance to give false hope)
The only reason HEFDM is being stretched like Hubba Bubba Max is because of Mejia's installment of La Mentira ( see Cuando me Enamoro)
I loved those shows on YouTube, but completely missed them on TV.
I know Hulu has 'Alborada ' now.
I hope you respond.
What channel played 'El Privilegio de Amar' and Pasión?
I loved those shows on YouTube, but completely missed them on TV.

I wish there was a place on the blog we could add in irder to notify everybody when one of these repeat telenovelas is about to air on an alternative channel, like Unimas or Azteca TV.
I think las repeticiones is a great idea and thanks for the tip about wiki
