La Sombra del Pasado #9 2/27/15 Candy's Very Busy Day!
Cristobal smiles gently, remembering the waterfall kiss he shared with Aldonza. “For one kiss from you I would break both legs.” He closes his eyes and leans against the headboard.

A little more sedate of an episode but hopefully lots to discuss. Good night any early birds reading this, thank you in advance and see you in the morning!
"trying Aldonza's forbidden fruit"...would those be the...melons?
"He stirs and is startled awake by Valeria sitting right on his bed!" That. Was TERRIFYING! Boundaries, Valeria, boundaries!
I was all kinds of excited about that horseshoe, and then the stupid impressionable cops completely dropped the ball! Especially after Melesio mentioned that those horseshoes have to be specially ordered--and is Sombra the only horse that has the special shoes? However, Roberta was all kinds of awesome with her freakout and her twirly skirt. I loves me some Roberta with eyes blazing!
In that conversation in Padre G's office, did Candela basically say that Roberta's a ho and Padre G agreed with her? So much for my theory that the good Padre wouldn't be listening to gossip.
That trip to Spain with the two families sounds like the ultimate travel hell. Prudencia would be trying all the local liquor. Humberto would just be bored/annoyed the whole time. Valeria would be hanging all over Pablo, who would be pining for Aldonza, and Candela would be fuming that none of it is working out the way she planned. Only Severiano would be having a good time, because he'd be watching everyone else suffer!
Speaking of Prudencia, is there a liquor bottle in town that's safe from her?! I'm starting to question whether she's been sober at ALL since the time jump. She does spin a good story, though...too bad we know every other word out of her mouth is a lie. I'm so glad that Prudencia and Valeria's penchant for making up stories reared up to bite them in the collective ass, wondering if maybe Emmanuel is Humberto's son. Serves them right!
"Satanic renewal of vows"--fabulous! And very fitting for that match made in hell!
I'm sorry about the intercepted letter, but I don't know if Cristobal-in-writing can hold a candle to Cristobal-in-the-flesh. It was sweet, but I'm ready for more steam on the screen!
Then I got to "properly and severely coiffed"... I love your phrasing!
I conjecture that this man from Cande's past is Raymundo NOT Padre G.
It explains the hatred for Roberta (since really Cande hated her even before knowing about the affair.) And it explains Roberta's reputation AND it adds a new layer to the competing baptisms in episode 1.
*sigh* Now the weekend Sombra withdrawals begin.
Well, our romance seems to be well launched and already being assaulted by sinister outside forces.
I wonder if they have crop insurance in Mexico like here in the U.S. If so, Roberta could recoup some of her losses.
Roberta needs to think outside the box. She is on the ground floor of a new food sensation - roasted watermelons.
Sever plays a great innocent man, mixing facts and made up things as he talks to the police. The cops kept the horseshoe so that will probably come back to bite him in the ass.
Also this classist stuff that allows him to get away with so much stuff annoys me, but I guess it will build up to some tipping point where it can't sustain itself, then Sever will be had for a multiplicity of sins.
David
Emmanuel sounds intriguing. Alex Sirvent looks so young in this role.
Niecie- I have been looking at Alex and wondering how he has managed to look younger than ever for this role. It's funny because in Amor Bravio he played mid-30s guy, among the friends of 30-somethings that included Lisett (Adelina) and Renee S. (Ray). Now he's playing a character in the younger generation who could be the kid of Lisett or Renee. I think it's something about the way Alex/Emmanuel carries himself, but he just looks so baby- faced too. I'm also wondering if they've given Pablo/Cris facial hair in this so that he can look the same age/slightly older than Alex who has quite a few years on him in real life.
Be back later when I've actually had the chance to watch. Looking forward to seeing Roberta on the war path.
:D
Well, it seems that we have our theme for this novels..those melons.
Who knows what darkness lies in the hearts of man..the Sombra knows.
What is up with delusional Val ?Geez. ''I am so worried about your injury, so let me just crawl right into your bed.'' What? Personal space, girl.
Well, it is STILL cold here and another storm is predicted for Sunday, but Hub and I are off for drive and a concert.
Why the heck doesn't he tell HER?
Yah, Robert was right when she called them boot lickers. Sev just rolled right over them, didn't he?
Yeah, Padre did kinda agree that Roberta was a ho.
That trip to Spain with the two families sounds like the ultimate travel hell. You said it and Cris knows it! Wasn't he so respectful the way he said it to his mom, though?
Oh, that Prudencia can sho' drank up some likker cain't she?
Thanks, Diva. Love your appreciative comments and look forward to more from you with all are Sombra peeps throughout the weekend!
David
Enjoy your observations, Sara. Sooo, you think the other man is Raimundo? Intteresting! Hadn't thought of that!! Ah, this ought to generate some great conversation. Making my way down comments, we'll see how it tallies up!
Sara, if it wasn't so late I would've spent more time trying to unravel Pru's colorful, liquor-lubricated speech. Oh well, I could still go back and try to decifer it. She is a trip!
I love that Cande was in scarlet last night and Roberta in black (a black cardigan). Hadn't caught Dominga's remark about the man from Cande's past...but too bad it isn't Padre G; that would give much more opportunity for ongoing conflict.
Actress that plays Valerie sure has a resemblance to Prudencia. Great casting.
Susanlynn: "The Shadow knows...bwahahahaha!"
J in Oregon
Yes! on the horseshoe. I hope it DOES come back to KICK him in the ass!
Yah, come on back! See ya later!
:D
Enjoy your concert and be safe! They're downgrading the storm we're supposed to get. I go visit my Mom every Sunday and do NOT want to get on the road and get caught in their wrong forecast!
that's my girl, Lila
Well, even the FloomZoom at 6 flags takes a breather, so our show does too.
What is it with these TN's and shrewish mama's, and their 20 something baby boys, trying to protect them from some shameless hussy. I'm tired of it. I hope Christobal doesn't become stupid after giving me so much hope he isn't.
Roberta - Fools, it was him, his horse the only one in town that wears Air Jordans.
Horse - I need to learn how to tie my own shoes
Valeria - oh my, so that's morning Wood
Severiano - now boys, if it were me, Smokey the Bear would have fingered me already
Christobal - the NSA can't monitor hand written correspondence, can they?
Candela - forget the content of the letter, it's the hearts and smiley faces that piss me off
Emmanuel - desperate enough to scrape shit off of shoes?
Prudencia - wanna see my Jack Daniels tattoo
It might be more logical for Cande's mystery man to be Ray, that would explain her hatred of Roberta. But if it's Padre we would certainly have much more ongoing drama. Which of course is more fun!
J in Oregon
"...whoever is experiencing unwanted advances from someone should put their foot down and lay out the ground rules in very clear terms."
Since you're male, I'm glad you said that David. So even as flattering as it is, males would want boundaries too. (Since I do not understand the male psyche lol.)
susanlynn-your "sombra knows" joke cracked me up!
Then again, he seemed just as lost as Aldonza and the rest of us as to why Cande hated Roberta.
Is he the older brother? How old was Ray when he left because Padre G seems to have NO CLUE about Santa Lucia. It's almost as if he didn't keep up with Ray at all. And he's been there about 20 years since he came back. I still can't believe that the feud between these two families is NOT on everyone's lips.
Severiano - now boys, if it were me, Smokey the Bear would have fingered me already
Oh, tofie, I was about to copy the whole darned list. Girl, you are nuts! Love it!!
Count me in on the "there's no romantic history between Candela and Padre G" camp. The way he greeted her says not. If they were that hot and heavy I don't think "Do you remember me?" is what he'd say.
Okay, so it was 10:45 p.m. for you when I posted. I was like, okay, this is cool; being up til 2 to do a recap is one thing but I don't think I'm going to be up reading one at that time! HA!
Happy Birthday to Mr. 5 ft!
He was trying Aldonza's forbidden fruit.
The kids are taking it easy today after the fiery kiss that the waterfall couldn't even quench.
Roberta looks away, spots something on the ground and picks it up. It's a horseshoe! Pain turns to anger. Lila this is great writing. This said it all, it was perfect.
Cris doesn't seem to be easily moved from his convictions. (not like our last easily manipulated galan)He isn't going to Spain. He's going to stick around and taste a little more of that sweet forbidden fruit.
It would be tragic if Roberta looses the beautiful land. I'm willing to start up a drive to help her keep it.
The police are next to worthless, they didn't even look at Sever's horse to see if he was missing a shoe.
Can't wait to see what Monday brings.
the gringo
Sara, lovin' your melon!
J in Oregon
Seems to me that Cris is a bit of a natural flirt and enjoyed the attentions of Val at his side. He's going to have to learn the hard way that this is sending mixed signals.
Prudencia should be writing bodice rippers. She has quite the imagination. I think she must be responsible for most of the gossip circulating in that town.
Loved Roberta's turquoise dress with the leopard print belt. The way it swished at the hem would make it perfect for dancing...or for running around town making arson accusations and berating the police.
Those two small town detectives were remarkably well dressed, no? Their suits were unfortunately sharper than their brains. Obviously they missed the class on critical thinking. Candela knew perfectly well to follow Sever's assurance that he would never set the firs knowing his son was there by suggesting the obvious-- he didn't know his son was there. Duh!
It's really a shame I couldn't find a picture of one that had been involuntarily grilled.
*snort*
Maybe the cops should have grilled the melons about the horseshoe.
I'm here all week folks.
Hi, Vivi! Thank you so much! Prudencia is probably THE major gossip engine in Santa Lucia! That chick is a piece of work!
Roberta was so out done over how they so easily dismissed her evidence on the word of Sever. She thought she really had him!
It's painful to type. I can't find my glasses! Gling to make it through comments and will have to come back tomorrow.
:)

Sara! Love your melon. I can tell you spent a lot of time looking for your melon: it looks like it was indeed ready for its close up!

". . .that melon is a ho!" Giiirrrl, you are on a roll tonight
derned glasses!

gringo. . .I know I responded to you but I can't see my comment! Thank you for your kind words. I literally hope to "see" you all tomorrow! Good night!
It's so late for me this evening and I am dog tired from waaay too much work, but I wanted to thank you both!
Fatima
Thank you, Fatima! Awww pobrecita! I'm glad were able to contribute to your moments of relaxation. Come on back when you're refreshed and speculate with us on who Candy's mystery man is and Emanuel's origins -- though that seems to be pretty clear!
Vivi! Stupid dress, indeed! My daughter and husband see the dress as gold/brown and white, my son and I see it as blue and black. I thought the whole "controversy" was whack until we looked at the picture. Reminds me of the black and white renderings of fruit bowls in the old science texts to show us what colorblindness was like. Weird.
The only dresses I care about are the ones Roberta wears. ;)
Not sure where they came from but they are not natives.
Thanks, Vivi! Yep, they are not from there.
This cracks me up:
Now I'm questioning if I really see everything around me as it truly is. Or just what I want to see. Am I living in an alternate reality of my own making, like Prudencia and Valeria? :)
Hahahahahahah! Yah, kinda does mess with your mind! Long as we don't start drankin' like Pru, we're fine!
;D
This was one of my faves:
https://instagram.com/p/znz7loh_tf/
Looked at multiple pics of the dress, even color corrected. The color corrected just looked like someone put a purple filter over a white and gold dress. *shrug* Oh, well!
Two well received shows and Uni has so far taken a pass on both. Grrr.
It's called "sanity".
:))
Fatima
I understand that some names get bigger ratings, but I'm not convinced that there are consistently different viewing habits between Mexico and the US.
You can't tell me friends aren't talking to each other across borders and saying "you have to see YNCELH. It's good!"
By the time Uni airs it I bet folks will have already sought it out online.
Re: Yo no creo en los hombres and El color de la pasión. Wow! Would love to see those but didn't the Mexican audience like TSTSNBN?
Anybody know if Televisa, Univsion ever wrote anything (serious) about what they think of their North of the border audience? Do they care what we think; are they even aware of hus?
OT: Hope my mommy's wi-fi is back up. . .hate trying to post on a teeny weeny phone!
;D
And when I screw up I can blame my phone.
If ever there was a candidate to be a "mommy's boy", this guy is it. So far, so good.
Also, Prudencia did not seem such a lush in the beginning episodes. What happened to change her? Was it Humberto bringing Emanuel into the house? I am not clear on that point, but she seems to be drinking at all hours of the day. NO ONE seems to say anything to her.
Fatima
I haven't quite figured out Humberto, either.
Fatima
I have to agree the Pru is drinking because she's bored. I guess she's avoided being the subject of gossip only because she is the source and no one will probably say anything negative about her because of her relationship with Cande.
So why is Cande ok with Val? I know there's the whole "she's one of us", but could someone like that be found elsewhere?
I guess it's a control thing.
As the years have gone by, I think Candela has really enjoyed her control. Severiano has told her that outright.
She wants to control her son, but thankfully, the son seems to have not inherited so many of his parents' bad attributes.
Fatima
This is certainly Humberto's alternate reality (LOVE that, Vivi!). In any other reality, that physician would be up before the medical board.
Fatima
I feel bad for Aldonza. She is suffering because of everyone else's alternate realities.
I am spoiled using the IPad. I don't even want to use the laptop or desktop anymore. However, I dropped my Apple and have to find a place to have it repaired, so I am using Hub's cheaper Le pen.
Snowing here again and Hub has to drive an hour to pick up the girls at their father's house. He would only agree to two hours earlier than usual..4.oo ...idiot.
"According to Prudencia Cristobal got burned because he was over at Las Animas trying Aldonza’s forbidden fruit!" and "...her loose lips lubricated with liquor" were among my favorites.
I loved Roberta's fire and passion and Aldonza's sweetness wrapped in gumption.
So sorry to be late but enjoyed all the comments.
susanlynn, so sorry the issues with your ex-SIL are still occurring. Keeping all of you in my thoughts and prayers.
Diana
I try to ignore previews but I am heartened that our two lovers will meet in person soon. . .I DO NOT want to see another domineering mama win battle after battle with a malleable mama's boy!
Keep fighting Cris!
Fatima
Now. That's what you call a friend: a gal who'll help make a ho outta ya melon. Word!
Skillz. yes, 5FT, you have them and then some!!
I don't know what I would do without the laughter this group brings. :))
Fatima
Fatima
Speaking of madams...am I the only one who is having trouble with this whole "Roberta is a ho" story? Sure, she's got the dresses and the leopard print belts and the shoes with the ankle strap so she never has to worry about them falling off at an inopportune moment...but if she's really trading sex for $$ then she's either not charging enough or spending it all.
I disagree with her detractors. I'd be willing to believe that there are men she sees occasionally and that she enjoys their, er, carnal attentions. And maybe they occasionally help her out with the odd expense, but that's not the same.
...and re the LGBs! I KNOW!!
I've mentioned this once before, but there is much more to Padre Geronimo than meets the eye. Do I think he was ever involved with Candela? No. I wasn't "feeling" it during their convo. He wasn't looking in the least bit torn about seeing her. It was just a factual, we were friends as chilren. I did NOT get any "Thorn Birds" vibe during that specific convo.
Fatima
I suppose Candela has been celibate for the last 20-something years and she is no fun at all!
Fatima
So when I call her a ho I mean a very loose woman. Not a prostitute.
But Cande for sure thinks she trades favors for money.
Like you said, Diva... It's more like she trades favors for trinkets or the odd expense. And I don't even think it's "I'll give you sex you pay to fix the irrigation system" I think she moaned about an expense and someone offered to pay. Then maybe she was a little less likely to say no to a man's affections.
I think maybe she's been a serially monogamous kept woman sort of kind of.
I could see Roberta having just the one guy that she sees on a regular basis. And if that's the case, what does it mean that when the shit hit the fan, that's NOT who she went running to.
Roberta has it bad for Sever and always has.
I think Cande used to be nice. Then Roberta and Sev happened.
Roberta was probably always selfish and used her feminine wiles to get what she wanted. She met Sev, had a thing for Zorro and the rest was history.
Roberta is just a gal with a healthy sexual appetite and not willing to swear off fulfilling her needs for days, months and years on end for a little thing like, say, widowhood. What got her ho status is acting like a ho. She crashed Cristobal's baptism and then stood there exchanging "knowing" looks with Sever, looks complete with smiling, slightly parted lips, steady, direct gazes and raised eyebrowys. The stunt she pulled at Ray's funeral wasn't very subtle either. Yelling and screaming at towns people doesn't mean you're a ho but it doesn't help.
So, if she weren't so brazen and impulsive, a little more classy or even bummed around in sweats and sneakers sometimes, maybe being "sex positive" could be an alternate reality she could enjoy in private instead of having all the men covet, and the women curse, her melons.
Yeah, I've had a Candy...or two...or three...in my life.
I think you make a good point about La Candela. After awhile, who cares?!
I wonder if Sever has been fooling around all these years?
Fatima
This is why I love Caray, Caray! There aren't a ton of people I know IRL who get the jokes about "no me toques" and "no puede ser!" and the ones who do get them, I don't get to hang out with very often.
Fatima, there is NO WAY Sever is NOT getting his ashes hauled!
From the opening sequence,it looks like there will be quite a few characters added. It will be interesting to see where this storyline goes. I feel sorry for Emmanuel. Talk about feeling unwanted. Have we decided that he is the disappeared Bebe ?
I have the greatest job in the world because I can TEACH everyone around me to say no me toques and no puede ser. I do and they say that stuff all the time. They've picked up cállate and I have to constantly remind them how rude it is and to notice it's the villains who always say it.
I don't believe Humberto's story about knowing Emmanuel's mother and promising she would take care of him after she died. And I'm baffled that Prudencia accepted that...at least enough to accept Emmanuel, even if she doesn't like him being there.
I always feel weird when I'm translating those, or attempting to translate...I don't want anybody to get in trouble for saying them at the wrong time in the wrong place!
Lila, "getting his ashes hauled"!!!
Sara, "grilling his melons mercilessly"!!! I love it that you can teach others all of these sayings that we love. You lucky dog, you!
Vivi in DC, I think I remember Candy Girl saying that to Sever once, but I kinda blew it off.
I figure the guy HAS to be doing some fooling around. After all, he has told Candy Girl more than once that he has "his needs". I die laughing when I hear that, too!!
Fatima
And sometimes in movies they will use a word that's common in that country but not as crude as a dictionary defines it. I usually turn off the subtitles for the nano second the word is used.
I am sitting at my desk where I SHOULD be finishing up my taxes, but I just can't help coming back for more laughs!
Fatima
I think TSTSNBN made us all insane and we'll be completely normal again.
Fatima
I've read some interesting articles about the kinds of expenses actors can deduct, but no way in hell am I going to do the math necessary to claim part of my cable bill (for study purposes), wardrobe (that ends up being used as costuming), beauty treatments (not that I get to do those very often), fitness equipment (haha, ha, hahaha), cell phone bill (since that's how my agent contacts me, plus sometimes it doubles as a prop) etc., etc., etc.
For now, I am sticking with paper. I write notes on the paper to clearly identify what is really deductible. I wasn't doing so hot with the digital receipts.
I don't go crazy with the deductions, either. Who has that kind of time?!
Can you imagine Candela doing her own taxes?!? NOT!
Fatima
Roberta, on the other hand...yikes...I don't even want to think about it. I hope Adelina handles all of that and Roberta stays way the hell out of it. But if that's the case, then why was Adelina so shocked to hear that they're on the verge of collapse? She didn't even know about the other mortgage.
If Roberta does have anything like crop insurance, the state of her finances is going to make it look like she's the one who burned the fields.
Damn. Is it Monday yet?
I wish the Adelina we saw initially would "come back". She was appropriately forceful and direct with Roberta. how can they all be living in that fancy house and not wondering how the bills are paid?!
Fatima
Adelina has to know something about their finances! Somebody's buying the tortillas, and it's not Roberta!
*ahem*
I've been a little grumpy about Adelina not wanting a relationship with Joaquin, but what would that look like? If they get serious and she wants to marry him, where are they going to live? In the house? With Roberta wandering around pantsless most of the day?
Twirling her tortillas...lol, Sara! Homemade tortillas are a precious commodity! Sell high!
Maybe it's only in the last year Roberta has gotten behind.
Two hour delays for local schools. I feel like this winter is never going to end.
Sara, love your new avatar.
Looking forward to tonight's episode. It's nice to have something positive to look forward to instead of anticipating how bad the next installment will be as on TSTSNBM.
Gringo, do you think we could sell some of these anvils left over from the last TN and help out Roberta with the mortgage?
I find the plays on words re: melons very humorous. Our melons here in Knox County aren't hos, but they are so good that they do sell themselves, so, I don't know if selling yourself constitutes hoism or not.
5ft, just wish we all could have your temperatures. Sounds great.
David
I think you're on to something David. It is nice to have a sense of happy anticipation about a show and not dread. On that other show my happy anticipation came from the patio.
I think you should wear that leopard print with frisky and risky pride!! And TWIRL that skirt!!!
Susanlynn, bring on the melondrama!
Lol!
Not to offend, but I remember getting a text from my daughter the first time she drove in LA when it was raining : "Angelinos can't drive in the rain!"
I told her it must be similar to us driving in the snow.
Maybe I'll check out Nordstrom and see if they have any.
