La Sombra Del Pasado, Capitulo #26, March 24, 2015: In which villains act like children but, sadly, none of them get slapped
The old: Cande’s an elitist b**** with a stick up her butt about E staying in Cris’s room, but too bad for her b/c it’s doc’s orders. Padre J reveals his Lola theory to Adelina.
The new: Cris is going to tell Vale that her dad is staying to watch Emmanuel. Hum’s on board b/c he doesn’t want to talk to Vale.
Lardo’s stuffing pillows under his covers to fool his folks. He wants his friend Tomás to call Las Ánimas and find out what happened to Emmanuel. He thinks he might need to go on the run b/c he might’ve killed E. (Could he please flee anyway? I’m already beyond sick of him.)
Irma and Uriel have too much faith in their kids. They discuss Mary’s heartbreak and Uriel is sure she’ll get over it soon (yeah, we wish). Talk turns to Lardo and their hopes that he sticks with his job. Irma’s proud that he came home early and thinks he went straight to sleep because he’s exhausted from working. In reality, he’s sneaking out to lay low at Tomás’s house. Those poor, deluded parents.
The young and innocent can’t sleep. Cris is up remembering Dom and Lola talking about Aldonza coming home and hanging with Renato. He wonders if she’s in love with this new guy.
Answer: nope. In fact, Aldonza is up remembering the waterfall kiss with Cris and his speech about always being there for her. Adelina comes in to say she’ll go to the bank with Aldonza tomorrow, but Aldonza’s mind is still on Cris, though she denies it. Adelina teases her that deep down, something besides vengeance is driving Aldonza’s desire to stay in Santa Lucia.
Renato also can’t sleep. His dad notes that he’s been sad since he came back from SL. Renato just can’t forget Aldonza. He’s never felt this way about anyone else. He’s been chasing her since he first saw her, but now he feels like he’s lost her forever. He’s thinking about quitting his job to follow her to SL. His dad thinks that’s crazy and Renato agrees, but the idea keeps popping up in his head.
Lola’s bummed that E didn’t pick her up, but her grandparents fill her in on his condition. She’s ready to go charging up to see him, but her gran physically sits her down her (three times!). Lola’s happy that E didn’t stand her up.
Irma checks on Lardo and is tricked with his pillow under sheet thing. Random note: In the lighting, she kind of looks like Aldonza.
It’s a new day. Aldonza goes to see Uriel at the bank about the account her mom left for her. Apparently it’s very generous. It’ll take a couple of days to switch the account over to her name. While Uriel’s copying the death certificate, Sev slithers up to leer at Aldonza. He’s going to get her back for the stabbing, but his debt with her is far bigger, and she swears to his face that she’ll make him pay up someday. It’s not a threat, it’s a promise.
Tomás has the scoop: Emmanuel didn’t die, so Lardo can go home.
Sev tells Aldonza there’s still time to get out of Santa Lucia, but she counters that she’ll only do that after she’s seen him on his knees, where he’s put so many other people. Uriel returns and Aldonza leaves.
Padre expands on his theory about Lola with Adelina. He thinks Sev made up the story about Lola’s parents to keep Lola around with people he trusts (Mel and Dom). Adelina is surprised that he’s already figured out Sev’s the daddy, but he’ll keep that under confession rules as well (dagnabit!). Aldonza enters and wants to know what’s going on with the two of them; she knows they’ve got something brewing. They make like she’s imagining things and joke that they’re just conspiring to protect her from any of the town jackals that might want to hurt her (which is not a bad idea).
Sev wants to know why Aldonza was at the bank. Uriel reveals that Roberta left her a sizeable amount of dough (thank God he’s not the doctor, he cannot keep info confidential!). Sev tells Uriel that Lardo fought with another employee, but doesn’t come close to explaining how serious it was. Sev admits that Lardo sucks at his job, but he’ll try to help him because he’s good for other (more evil) things and Sev’s just such a generous and helpful guy.
Lola wants desperately to check on her love, but her gram reminds her that Emmanuel needs to rest and recover. Besides which Dominga doesn’t want Cande to see Lola running around the house. Lola wants to give E kisses (and possibly pork rinds? There was talk of “un achichurrón” that I did not understand) because love cures all, but her gram swats her with a dish towel and tells her to slow her roll.
E’s ready to get up and get going, but Cris says they’re following doctor’s orders so he better stay put until Hum gives the green light. He reminds E that he’s like a brother (to him) and jokingly threatens to knock E out again if he doesn’t rest. Hum and E talk briefly about how Lardo just got the ranch and already sucks at life.
Sev wants Uriel to block Hum from seeking loans at all the banks in the region. Uriel can’t do anything directly, but he doesn’t think any of the other banks will loan Hum the money either because Hum just doesn’t have the resources to get that kind of credit.
Cris looks for Lardo at his house, but he’s not home. Irma thought he was already at work. She invites Cris in and goes to get Captain Worthless from his room but finds the pillow person instead.
Cande wants Sev to kick E out. Sev reminds her that E was already in Cris’s room when Sev got home and though he’s technically the man of the house she’s made it her life’s purpose to remind him that she wears the pants, so she should handle her business. Cande was going to do just that, but Cris was so worried about E that she couldn’t. She doesn’t like that Cris cares about Emmanuel. Sev talks sense for maybe the first time in his life: He says Cris is noble and he doesn’t know where he got that from since he and Cande are far from it. Cande argues that she does a lot of charity work, but Sev says giving money doesn’t make you a good person especially if you do it for your reputation. He knows she only does all that for two reasons: 1) Padre J. He implies that she has a thing for the priest. 2) so that local crows don’t think ill of her. He says that she was really good, she wouldn’t treat E and Lola the way she does. She’s pissed that he, of all people, wants to give her lessons in morality. She snaps that God’s the ultimate judge, and Sev’s going straight to Hell before stomping off. I reel from the shock of Sev actually making sense.
Irma’s telling Cris that Lardo’s out when the slimeball comes home. Cris shoves Lardo’s worthless ass from wall to furniture as he tells him not to show his face at the hacienda again after what he did to Emmanuel. Lardo says he’s going to tell on Cris to Sev. Irma tries to break up the fight just as Mary comes in. Cris is noble enough to let Lardo tell what happened. After he leaves, Lardo hems and haws, but finally starts telling (what was sure to be a heavily edited and vague version of) what happened. He barely gets past the fact that he hit E when Mary starts smacking him, furious that he laid hands on her crush. Lardo whines that no one’s ever on his side. Irma wants him to apologize to everyone and save his job, but Lardo refuses. Because he is a child. He tries to lay a guilt trip on Irma and storms out, slamming the door behind him. Oh this jerk is going to get stabbed in a dark alley for five bucks one day and the world will simply shrug.
Lola’s trying to sneak in to see E under the guise of cleaning, but Dominga catches her and drags her away by the ear. Man, she is better than celeb security with a fangirl!
Aldonza’s talking to Adelina, who’s a million miles away thinking about the Lola situation. She asks Aldonza if she’s seen Lola. Aldonza says of course, she has; Lola is pretty much her only friend. Adelina’s in full support of the friendship and wants Aldonza and Lola to stay close. Aldonza’s like “oooook… random.” She thinks her aunt’s being weird, but shrugs it off.
Melesio comes in for some water just after Dominga deposits Lola back in the kitchen. Lola shares her meeting with Padre J. Her grandparents get nervous and Dominga runs Lola off to go to her job. She and Melesio wonder worryingly if Padre J knows something.
Pru washes some pills down with booze, still lamenting her supposed situation with Hum. She and Vale talk about Lardo’s bitch ass move with Emmanuel. Pru’s on Cande’s wavelength, wanting to know why they didn’t put E in the stable or stock room (Seriously? These harpies are pissing me off). Vale knows Cris wouldn’t have allowed it and doesn’t want her mom commenting on it in front of Cris.
Mary refuses to work with Lola in Irma’s store and when Irma won’t fire Lola, Mary quits. Because apparently Mary is played by a 33 year old who is pretending to be a 25 year old that is acting like a 12 year old.
Cande asks Hum if he really needs to monitor E or if he’s just avoiding talking to Vale and Pru about Aldonza. Hum says she and Vale misinterpreted things. He met with Al because they had things to discuss. Like what happened when she stabbed Sev. Cande practically chokes. What does he know? Enough to know Sev earned that stab wound, he says. Hum leaves an embarrassed and angry Cande fuming in the hallway.
Aldonza made lunch, which she and Padre Jeronimo are having together. Adelina’s taking a nap. Aldonza notes that her aunt hasn’t been feeling well and hopes she doesn’t get sick. Padre J says Adelina’s strong as an oak, she’s just getting older. He asks about Lola and Aldonza gets suspicious since Adelina just asked about her too. Padre says Lola’s on his mind because she visited the church the other day and seems lonely. He asks Aldonza to check up on her and she says she will after her errands. He asks how things went at the bank. She’s surprised her mom left her so much money. Not enough to go buck wild, but enough to really help. Padre recommends that she be careful with it, but she’s not gonna waste it. She’s got plans for that money…
Mary brings chocolates to E. Dom walks her right to him! After running Lola off like a bouncer?! Unfair!
Cris has stopped by the Zapata house to fill them in on Hum staying at the hacienda to monitor E. Hum also asked Cris to pick up some clothes for him and Cris is a little surprised by the request. Pru enters regally from the stairs and says Hum can stay away forever. Cris thinks she’s pissed that Hum’s so concerned about Emmanuel, but she couldn’t give a rábano (radish). She’s mad that Hum’s having an affair with Aldonza!
Mary is all over the E situation. She’s apologizes on behalf of her whole family for her idiot brother and hopes that E doesn’t hold it against the whole clan. E assures her he doesn’t. He just doesn’t want Lardo back at the ranch. He thanks her for visiting and bringing his favorite chocolates. She takes an extra beat to enjoy kissing him goodbye (on the cheek) and says bye three times before actually leaving.
Outside she sweetly tells Lola that she was hanging with E-man and Lola takes it for what it is: a declaration of war.
Pru insists that Hum and Al are lovers. She parrots back Vale’s recap of the restaurant meeting, which really only makes their argument sound more ridiculous. Hum and Al were in a restaurant! (In a restaurant!) They were holding hands (Holding hands!) as if without a care in the world (Not a care!). Conclusion: Obviously they’re knocking boots! Cris doesn’t buy it. This pisses Vale off. Oh so now I’m a liar! You believe her over me! Cris tries to reign her in, he’s just saying it’s weird, but Vale is 100% sure that Aldonza is a whore that is out to destroy her family! Cris (on account of not being an idiot or 13) doesn’t agree and we end on their locked horns.
Avances: Vale continues to be pissed that Cris won’t leap to outrageous conclusions with her. Pru accuses Al in the street!

Just two great lines in this wonderfully detailed and spirited recap! Love it!
I guess the closest we get to love between our lovers are their mutual misty midnight dreams and Cris's unabashed defense of Aldonza's character which, strangely, do work for me! Was it you, HellaShelle who said the harpies, led by Cande, are driving these two right into each others arms? They are quite ridiculous, indeed! Let Vale keep it up so Cris can get a foretaste of the hell that awaits him as this heffa's property!
Thank you, HellaShelle! Fantabulous, as usual!

Lines I loved:
Because apparently Mary is played by a 33 year old who is pretending to be a 25 year old that is acting like a 12 year old."
Cris (on account of not being an idiot or 13)...
I don't know if it helps, but dar chicharrón can mean to kill. I can't remember her line exactly. Could she have meant something like that?
1. My absolute favorite part of the recap was your retelling of Val's retelling of the restaurant encounter with Pru singing harmony. You nailed it and everyone in the waiting room is wondering so why I'm staring and my phone and chortling.
2. You wrote: "He says that she was really good, she wouldn’t treat E and Lola the way she does." (emphasis added.) Could Lola be yet another love child? Not Roberta's, but Simoneta?
Well, Vale's reactions to situations are the best argument for long engagements. Doesn't hurt to wait a while and find out if your intended is a bitch, or has other qualities that are off putting.
Emm and Cris; normal guys acting normally, but being buffeted on all sides by weird people.
Aldonza is going to get callouses on her cheek from being smacked so much.
Cande is just seeming to be more and more powerless to me. But she still has that candle stick up her butt.
Loved Aldonza's "promise" to Sev. Bet she gets the job done, too.
I am loving the Padre/Ad detective agency, and Sara I like your thought that BOTH Lola and Emm could be Sev's offspring. That would complicate things.
Thanks again, hellaschelle. I really enjoyed your take on things.
David
Oh no! PLEASE don't let Lola and Emm be half siblings! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! There is way too much passion between them for that to end because Sev is their dad. Ew. Just ew.
I am really getting sick of kids that insist that just because someone doesn't agree with them about one thing, they're "never on my side!!!" Last night Lardo, Mary, Vale all made me want to slap the crap out of them. These baby villains are too much for me, esp since I'm already needing to tighten the beanie to pretend they're as young as they're supposed to be.
Still, something is up with the Lola origins.
I did hear Sev mention to Cande about treating both Emmanuel and Lola better, but it went right over my head (whoosh!) that they might BOTH be his children-on-the-side.
Am liking the Padre more each day. He is a *real* character, not just a padre who is dragged out to dispense standard advice, and it's very satisfying to see him digging into the mystery of Roberta's missing baby.

Boy it sure was "let's bash Cande" night. Everyone was taking stabs, well in most cases, well deserved stabs at her last night. Watching her eyeballs popping out of her head with that severely pulled back hair is so fun!
I agree, Dominga is fighting too hard to keep E-Man and Lola apart. They kissed, so by TN law that rules out siblings ( or at least I hope so), but what the heck is her problem otherwise? Does she know something about E-Man's background that she doesn't want Lola anywhere near the mess that may become one day?
Watching Pru is sort of a hoot, but the actual character and her daughter together are enough to make you want to slap them silly. And Pru washing down her "pills" with a shot of whatever, WTH?? So not a good idea. Her drinking is really getting out of hand.
I could watch E-Man smiling all day...the writers better do right by this poor guy. On the other hand, Lardo can go drown in the pool. How the blazes did Irma and Uriel get such whiney kids? Mary isn't as bad, but Lardo is worthless. I agree, he could disappear from this story anytime.

"Because apparently Mary is played by a 33 year old who is pretending to be a 25 year old that is acting like a 12 year old"
My favorite, most awesomeist exchange was in the hallway between Humberto and Cande and he dotted that i with a, he got what he deserved. Go my boy Hummer.
Mari - served on a platter
Lola - come on grammy this electric dog collar chafes
Pru - is too, 2 + 2 = whore
Yummanuel - who needs dinner when I got candy
Humberto - who wears the pants now
Aldonza - Midnight at the Oasis
Irma - damn, I'll have to get a key made, we already changed the locks
Val - if she wasn't guilty she would have hit me back
And something that went over my head- the implications of the "Adelina is so tired lately" conversation.
Or am I being paranoid? Or have I missed it entirely and it's just that she's tired keeping secrets from Aldonza?
Thank you Hellashelle. Great recap.
Great lines all the way through---
Could he flee anyway? I'm already
beyond sick of him. Yes and the gringo is too.
He's going to get her back for the stabbing but his debt with her is far bigger, and she swears to his face that she'll make him pay up someday. It's not a threat, it's a promise. The gringo sees ominous dark clouds on the horizon.
But her gram swats her with a dish towel and tells her to slow her roll. Gringo says wow! Lola is ready to ponce. Let her go, she knows what she wants. Too bad that she will have to fight Mary over the handsome E. Yes, it will be a declaration of war and while I'm not against Mary at this point
I have to be rooting for sweet Lola. Is there a Lola table out on the patio?
Stabbed in a dark alley for five bucks? Would anybody miss this guy?
Right Lila---Let Val keep it up so that Cris will get a good lesson of what he is getting into with this woman. Can he handle her? I think not.
Bankers talk to much---Doctors talk to much. Does anyone in Santa Lucia know how to keep a professional mouth shut?
8 hours and 20 minutes to go to must see tv.

I love all your digs at Abelardo...it's funny 'cause it's true! "Could he please flee anyway? I'm already beyond sick of him." "Oh this jerk is going to get stabbed in a dark alley for five bucks one day and the world will simply shrug."
Oh, Roberta! She's still reaching back from the grave. She could have made her own life so much easier with that money, but it's almost as if she hated to have anyone say anything positive about her. This is a contrast to what Sev is saying to Cande about how she only does good things so people won't talk smack about her. "I reel from the shock of Sev actually making sense." Right there with you!
Can't Ulises ever keep his mouth shut! Don't be talking to Sev about Aldonza's money situation!
"Sev admits that Lardo sucks at his job, but he’ll try to help him because he’s good for other (more evil) things and Sev’s just such a generous and helpful guy." This does not bode well...though it made for a cynical chuckle on my part.
"He reminds E that he’s like a brother (to him) and jokingly threatens to knock E out again if he doesn’t rest." Yeah, that was...not so subtle. I expected to hear some music cue, or even to have a little more info revealed when Cande and Sev argued, but they're really keeping the hints vague. Not that I'm not 99.999% convinced that "the baby" is Emmanuel and not Lola, but they just keep not giving me that tiny extra push to 100%.
"Man, she is better than celeb security with a fangirl!" Ha! Dominga can be my bodyguard any day :) I really think she's just being the traditional, overprotective grandma who doesn't believe in taking the car for a test drive before signing the contract. I don't think there's any hidden message behind it.
What pills did Pru down with her booze?! And she referenced her name...and took more pills. Ay, Pru!
"Because apparently Mary is played by a 33 year old who is pretending to be a 25 year old that is acting like a 12 year old." Spot on!
a novela recapper. Wow! You lead a full life. You put me to shame.
"oh this jerk is going to get stabbed in a dark alley for five bucks one day and the world will simply shrug."
Abe is such a narcissist and nobody would miss him if he ended up in the lake wearing concrete shoes.
Usually when a character, good or bad, is killed off a tn- that's that. But for some reason, I still feel the strong presence of Roberta. I'm sure it's in the strength of character that Aldie has developed, plus other things like Uriel saying that she (Roberta) set up the account with an initial amount, then kept adding to it throughout the years. Poor Roberta suffered the "desprecio" and bad thoughts from Adelina and Aldonza in (relative) silence while all the time she was building up her daughter's "inheritance" in the only way she knew how. Makes me love (and miss) her even more.
I loved the taunting of Cande but loathed Lola being denied visiting rights to E!
An in another long meeting but had to stop and thank you for your marvelous comments including "(Could he please flee anyway? I’m already beyond sick of him)" which was my favorite.
Will read the other comments later.
Diana
Gringo - thanks for those words. I will take your advice and let that ghost quit hautning me!
David- Doesn't hurt to wait a while and find out if your intended is a bitch Well said! I am definitely more at peace now that I'm focused on how her b*tchiness is bringing about the downfall of the relationship.
Pru's another one that might bring on her own end.
Daisy-I'm looking at the constant drinking too. She yelling her grievances at Aldonza tonight, but I can easily imagine her slurring them in the town square and making a spectacle of herself that way. She reminds me of Roberta in that she's not particularly noble or useful, but she definitely inspires mycompassion.
Gobluefan - I'm shaking my head because I can totally imagine that and it would be a gosh darn shame.
NOOOOOOO Bluefan NOOOOOOO Not a pregnant Val as a means to hold onto Cris. I couldn't bare it.
Must see tv.
the gringo
Since they've been back there hasn't been a specific scene of her sleeping with anyone....but it could still happen the way Gobluefan has suggested.
They've made it clear that Val has needs. She's very liberated. ;-)
You know the way Uriel talks, where he sit and then checks the woman sitting next to him, is he really the head of the bank or just a loan officer or account manager. He's sort of right out there for anyone to overhear or see. Surprising for a bank even in a small town. Usually bank managers have a private office. If he's not, might explain how he's so easily manipulated.
Daisynjay
It seems that Val and Cris have not any sexy time since they moved back home. Cris is losing that loving feeling...or more accurately..that lusting feeling. Val had better arrange the time and place for a quickly.
Ann-NYC
P.s. I loved the way that padre seemed to really tuck into that salad. Usually actors just pretend to eat as they tap their firms on their plates, but padre seemed to actually be enjoying that salad. I love padre
Yay..I successfully identified photos of beer to prove beyond a sombra of a doubt that I am not a robot.
Everyone has mentioned the best moments and recap lines. One little thing that stuck out and made me giggle was when Aldonza laughed out loud and reminded Padre that she's an adult too, when he told her adults like him and Adelina get tired. It was a cute moment.
