La Sombra del Pasado #64 Friday, 5-15-15

Good Evening, Peeps!  Well, I thought I’d lighten the mood a little bit here on the patio with our beloved Casa de Caramelos, The Candy House!  You’ll see why.  Let’s get right to it!  This was a rapid fire episode (no pun intended) with lots of jumping around.

We have a brief rewind of the biddie and bile (Val) attack in the plaza.  Aldonza goes upside Vale’s head – WHOP!! – and tells her she’d better back down before she gets smacked down - again.  Vale tries to play hurt for the biddies.

Over at Las Animas Cande tells Sev he MUST come home!  Their grown son needs his diaper changed and she doesn’t want Aldonza doing it!  Hell no, there’s lots of moola  in play with his horsey deal.  He hangs up on her.  Simonetta/Viviana (S/V) is with him, he scoffs that she wouldn’t understand these situations with kids, not having any.  S/V tells Sev she DOES have a child and he doesn’t care about her life.  He tells her to shut it and don’t start with her drama!

Back at LA, Cris trots downstairs to tell Dominga his big news but finds her sobbing.  He holds and comforts her as she sobs that sometimes one’s errors are very costly; it’s easy to give out advice but hard follow it.  She has to recover her granddaughter and feels she’s lost her forever!

We quickly stop in over at the Lagos place.  Irma sits at the dining table looking absolutely dejected when Abelardo bursts through the door!  He is ambushed by his anguished Mom.  He cries that he has done something ugly and he is really in trouble this time!  She holds him and pleads with him that they can  resolve it, she and his Dad can help him!  He pulls away he can’t stay.  Abelardo’s face contorts with dry sobs as he asks his Mom to forgive him for not being a good son and he bursts out the door just as he entered, leaving Irma calling after him and begging him to come back!

It is a very still night.  So far.  Cris and Donnie sit at a bench.  He fills her in on how it went with his Mom.  Bad.  He doesn’t tell her she tried to slap him back into childhood .  He tells Aldonza Cande doesn’t know they are married and tells her about Dominga being all torn up.  Aldonza fills him in on the whole S/V being Lola’s mother.  It takes a minute for the significance of this to sink in for Cris.

On the dark streets of SL, Adriano and another guy confront Abelardo, demanding money.  Lardo nervously offers that they’ll get it when Sev comes back to town.  Adriano ain’t having that!  Lardo pushes him and runs down the alley.  When confronted by a third dark figure, Lardo pulls out the gun he got at Sev’s desk drawer and points it at this third figure.  When Lardo turns back toward Adriano and the other dude who are at the top of the stairs, third dude takes the gun and slugs Lardo, flinging him against a wall.  Adriano and the other dude run down the stairs and Adriano shoots Lardo once in the chest!

Lola returns to LA to get her things and blows off Dom and Mele.  She is unmoved by Dom’s pained expression and pleas to stay.  Is Lola going to let one mistake erase all the good things and the love they’ve shown her?  Well, that one bad thing was BIG.  She leaves; Dom cries, Mele say let her go.  Lola meets Pato outside LA where she repeats her complaint that they lied:  she asked them so many times about her parents and they lied.   She and Pato leave though Pato seems frustrated with the finality of her rejection.

We are back with Lardo and his “friends.”  One of them doesn’t seem to want to leave the scene but at last they all run off as Lardo writhes and crawls on the ground, bloody and moaning.

Cris and Donnie walking and talking and have reached the parsonage.  The three assailants walk right past Cris and Aldonza, preoccupied with their own dirty deeds.   Cris and Aldonza kiss goodnight; she enters the parsonage and Cris continues down the street.  Once inside the apartment, Adelina scolds Aldonza about Lola staying there.  Padre J is asleep and doesn’t know Lola is there.  Adelina stops Aldonza from going to tell Padre J:  he’s asleep; poor thing has not fully recovered and is beat!

Cris continues on his way home and we hear Lardo’s tortured, gluterral death cries but it seems to take Cris a long time to realize someone is in distress.  He finally goes toward the stairwell and sees Lardo, blood coming from his nose and mouth.  Cris puts his arm around him and asks him what happened.  Lardo takes his last breath.  Cris takes out his phone and makes a call.

Once again at the Lagos home, Uriel frantically questions Irma about what Lardo said, where he is, when he’s coming back.  Irma doesn’t know, all she can do is cry that she tried to stop him and she’s afraid.  Uriel tries to comfort her; everything will be all right.  Irma says she has a very bad presentiment that Lardo is involved in something very grave.

At the scene of the crime Cris is questioned by the Police Chief.  He tells how he found Lardo at the bottom of the stairs already injured.  He answers in the affirmative that he knew him, gave his full name and said that Lardo worked for his Papa at Las Animas and was the son of Uriel, general manager of the bank.   Cris affirms again that Lardo was alive when he found him, that Lardo asked him for help, but he couldn’t do anything for him.  Police Chief tells him that’s all for now but to remain available for further questions and do not leave Santa Lucia.  Cris wants to know who will tell his family.  PC says that’s his job.  A uniformed cop runs up with a gun found at the scene.  PC tells him to submit it into evidence and let no one touch it.  Cris leaves, and the Police Chief looks after him suspiciously.

Back at the parsonage Aldonza is with Lola as she unpacks.  Aldonza hears the scream of sirens and looks out.  She worries aloud about Cris.  Lola chuckles that everything that happens doesn’t involve Cris.  Aldonza tells her about the accident in the D.F.  They chat about how Renato took the news of her marriage:  He was sad but not angry.  As a matter of fact, they are partners!  She got to reconcile with the love of her life and didn’t lose her best friend!  [Hmmmm, Donnie’s been on the Caray board again!]

And here is that “best friend” eating dinner with his Dad.  Renato tells his Dad he has t a lot of business in SL and fills him in on the office he, Sylvia and Pato will have there.  Renato also tells him about the agricultural enterprise he’s entering with Aldonza.   His Dad at first humorously, then seriously asks why he wants to be near Aldonza knowing she is married and he will suffer.  Renato doesn’t deny he wants to be near her.  “You only find a woman like that once in life.”  Renato knows the relationship is rocky and fraught with problems between Cris and Aldonza's families.  He cannot fight what he feels and essentially he’s going to bide his time, wait for the marriage to fall apart and pick up the Aldonza pieces.   His Dad says this is not the Renato he knows.   Hey, Renato can’t help it.  He’ll do anything to get Aldonza in his arms and at this point in his life, if loving Aldonza is wrong, he don’t wanna do right!  His Dad is likewise torn:  he can’t judge him and he wants him to be happy.  He just hopes Renato doesn’t make the same mistake he did, hurting the woman he truly loves by making a terrible mistake.

Adriano and the other two stooges meet in the local cantina.  Third dude confirms that Lardo is dead and they decide they’ve got to blow Santa Lucia!

Ah, here’s poor Jock playing with his son’s little Lego truck.  Eman comes in.  Jock sighs that he misses his son and hopes they turn up soon.  Eman wonders who can be helping Flavia.  Jock says she has no family.  Eman suggests maybe someone is helping her hide.  Jock gets up from the table because Eman is making him feel worse.

Hey!  It’s Flavia with a sleeping little Ray.  What’s this!  Adriano bursts into the room, throwing stuff in a suitcase telling Flavia to get her crap together, they’re outta here!   Any ideas on what relationship these two have?

Cris gets home and Cande freaks over his blood-stained jacket.  He tells her about Lardo’s death.  Whoa, she can’t believe it, he was just there!  Cris wants to talk to Vale and has to explain it’s because she is Mari’s (Lardo’s sister) best friend.  Cande doesn’t follow him to his bedroom.

Now, no matter how hard-headed, or stupid, or how much of a slug or scrub Lardo was, his parents and sister dearly loved him and I cannot bear to rewatch or give a lot of detail to some of the following scenes.  The Police Chief goes to the Lagos home and gives them the news of Lardo’s death.  Irma collapses to the floor along with Mari who holds and cries with her Mother.  The usual tower of strength, Uriel nearly collapses as well and the three weep together.

Adriano places a call to report that “the work is done.”   He is talking to Sev.   Flavia is with Adriano at a bus station as he tells Sev that the execution didn’t come out as they planned.  1) Lardo had a pistol and didn’t know how to use it and when they took it from him, it went off.  2) They couldn’t get rid of the body.  3) They didn’t have a getaway car.  Sev calls him an imbecile:  if they take fingerprints of the body, they’re sunk!  Uh oh, Adriano may soon be joining Abelardo!

Cris calls Aldonza and tells her about Lardo’s death, how he found him suffering from a gunshot wound at the foot of a stairwell, that he tried to help him but he couldn’t do anything, and Lardo died in his arms.

There is another painful scene where Uriel identifies Lardo’s body at the morgue.  He nods sadly and then breaks down, begging Lardo’s forgiveness for not helping him as he should have.   Later in the hallway of the Police station as he prepares to leave anger hits Uriel as he lumbers towards the Chief asking who killed his son!  They don’t know, they have to find out.  The Chief asks him if Uriel knows if Lardo was involved in any problems, if he has any enemies.  Uriel doesn’t know anything.  He walks away sobbing loudly, broken.

At the Lagos home, Mari has to put aside her grief to help her Mom.  She brings her tea but Irma doesn’t want anything, she only wants to be with Lardo.  She sobs that it’s all her fault.  “How come I didn’t know his problems were so big?  If I did, it wouldn’t have happened!”  Irma rejects Mari’s insistence that they were the best parents possible and begins to wail even louder that she is a terrible mother, will never forgive herself; what will she do without her son and that she wants to die!   Mari holds her, helpless.

Pru comes into Vale’s room.  Val sits in bed holding the phone and tells Pru that Lardo was killed.  Hum comes in, turns on the light.  Val is stunned but Pru states she’s not surprised.  Hum is not shocked but is more sympathetic.  Val cries that she just saw him.  Pru doesn’t want to go to velorio.  Hum says yes, they will go in solidarity and support of the Lagos!  Hum goes to make calls.  Pru tells her to stop crying or Hum will find out there was something between them.  Val doesn’t care.  Pru is one cold-hearted bitch.

Over at the parsonage, Aldonza is remembering her first encounter with Lardo when he and Tomas were (sexually?) harassing her and she was rescued by Cris.  Adelina watches her and asks what’s going on, where is Padre J?  Aldonza answers that he got up early and went to the church.  He left urgently  because Abelardo was killed last night.   Aldonza shares that she was thinking of the first time she and Cris met at El Santuario was when he rescued her from Abelardo and his friend.  (quisieron pasarse de listos conmigo – what does this mean?)   Somehow, Abelardo is part of their story!

At the church Lulu is readying the treasures for the raffle.  She picks up the candy house and chatters about how yummy it looks.  She notes Padre J is preoccupied.  Yes.  He tells her about Lardo.  They will have to put off the raffle, they have to ready the church for a funeral.

When Aldonza tells Renato about Abelardo’s death, he does what he always does whenever Aldonza merely draws a breath:  he’s coming to Santa Lucia.  Renato is silent for a moment and then considers that they will probably take Abelardo’s fingerprints which is routine procedure in such cases.  Aldonza doesn’t want to pursue getting Lardo’s prints to proceed with the arson investigation.  She can’t do that to Irma and whatever Lardo did in the past, he has paid for it.  She wants to leave things as they are.  He observes with admiration that he would expect nothing less of her.

Our last scene is at the Police station.  An investigator comes in to the Chiefs office and declares that they have examined the pistol they found at the scene of Lardo’s murder.  The gun has initials engraved on it, “S.  M.”  the initials of the owner:  Severiano Mendoza!

Hey, y'all! Couldn't think of a title. If one occurs to me, I'll come back and put it up later.

As usual, please correct anything I misunderstood. I'll go back through and tweak tonight or either in the morning.

I was not happy to see Lardo murdered because Uriel, Irma and Mari broke my heart! This was all about kids breaking their parents hearts: Lola by leaving and Lardo by dying.

Have at it, Peeps!

Thanks, Sara! No, you are not cold-hearted for your delight over the candy house! It had the intended effect, my dear. I guess I needed to cheer myself up, the Lagos were killing me, man!

And no, Uriel did not mention the visit by the thug, the actual killer, Adriano, to his house the day before, or maybe even the day OF Lardo's murder. Poor sap was too broke up. . .he'll think of it later.

Yeah. Let's do this tomorrow. Goin' to get me some shut-eye!

:D

Gracias, Lila. My computer froze before the last two scenes so I'm glad to read them here.

Candela will probably get her wish about preferring to see Cristobal in prison rather than with Aldonza. They'll probably arrest him and Renato will have to show up at the police station to demand the gunpowder test, etc. The scandal! The shame! Dirt for days!

I'm disappointed because I wanted a more colourful Karmageddon for this little creep.

Agree that Pru is cold. However, Candela is still worse.

Maybe more later.

Lila, wonderful recap, just wonderful!

It was really hard, watching Lardo squirm his way to his death. That actor did a fine job, I felt just awful watching him. The whole family was suffering. It was all awful. But I mean the actors did a great job.

No spoiler, but are they are setting Chris up to take the fall for Lardo's murder? I guess being in jail will be reason enough for the church wedding to be called off.

So we finally hear Aldie's "mis planes" uttered out loud--a truck farm? Really? That's going to make your fortune? Wow, I am underwhelmed.

J in Oregon

Thank you for the recap, Lila. Nice coverage. This was tough with, like you said, the parental hearts breaking.

I know I was all blaming Irma and Uriel for how Lardo turned out, but damn, now that he's dead, I hate hearing Irma say it's all her fault. Poor woman! Ya, it's over. There's nothing she could have done to keep him from getting his damn foool ass killed. Having him burst in like that right before the end just made it worse for her.

For the first time, I could see a possible turnaround for Mari. She was as devastated as her parents.

Val looked legitimately sad, though I guess that's going to wear off soon.

Cris was in total shock. I never got the impression he'd seen much real darkness in his life. I think this might have been the first time.

I don't know what to make of Flavia and Adriano. Joaquin said she didn't have any family in town.

No Tomas tonight...he's the only other person who might be sad about Lardo's death.

I'm really annoyed with the cops who act like they've never so much as seen a TV cop show. "Sir, I found this gun...what do I do with it?" Really? I don't understand why it's even Aldonza's decision whether they take the fingerprints or not. The cops are supposed to know he's being sought in connection with an arson, and they ought to be getting his prints to compare them to any prints found on the gun to help put together the full story of what happened and/or refute any lies his loser friends my try to tell.

Me likey Lila.

"Their grown son needs his diaper changed and she doesn’t want Aldonza doing it"

"if loving Aldonza is wrong, he don’t wanna do right!" Caught your reference to the Luther Ingram song If Loving You Is Wrong (I Don't Want To Be Right) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvJj7SN9EWI

Great to be surprised and was twice last night. Right as I was thinking Severiano would benefit by Adriano killing Lardo, I see it was on Severiano's command. The other was Flavia hiding out with Adriano. Couldn't she hear the conversation between Adriano and Severiano?

With so many things that point to the contrary, who benefits the most having it pinned on Cris? There are fingerprints on the gun as well as initials, Tomas knew he had a gambling debt and to whom it was owed, Abelardo was in Severiano's office prior and Adriano came threatening at the house.

Renato may not have to wait long and his little bird will fly right to him.

There is no logical reason why Aldonza would not want Abelardo's fingerprints ID'd as the arsonist. She knew he worked for Sev, the little creep appeared at Renato's former office with an offer from Sev that would have gotten Aldonza's lawsuit kicked, and the SOB tried to rape her back when before Sev actually did.

This makes no sense at all. Nor should it even occur to her that Cristobal would kill him.

As for Flavia's relationship to Adriano, I first wondered whether he was her brother, but now it seems that she who accuses the loudest is usually guilty (shades of Valeria accusing Aldonza of slutting around), so Flavia was probably cheating on Joaquin.

Even Adriano could do better.

Good morning, Lila. This was just great. I can't tell you and the rest of the recappers how much I enjoy your work!

Well, Lardo continues to be a dummy right up to his death. He pulls a gun he doesn't know how to use and has never practiced with, then TURNS HIS BACK on one of his adversaries. (Hint: in combat, you NEVER turn your back on an opponent unless you KNOW they are dead)

I wish the altercation between Val and Aldonza would have been played differently, with Aldonza showing Val her ring, but I guess they had decided to hold off telling everyone until Cris told his parents?

Sev keeps digging himself a deeper hole. I am really enjoying how his self aggrandizement is making him feel invulnerable to everything and everybody. I really hope his anvil is adequate to his crimes.

Poor Cande. No instinct for mothering, and too dumb to figure out how to handle situations around her. She always falls back on her "station" in life as a reason for everyone to treat her and conduct themselves around her in the way she wants.

David

Thanks Lila. Great recap!

I heard that collective 'yes" whispered across the patio as Lardo met his doom. It was hard to feel bad for the guy, he had a good family and more than ample opportunity to turn his life around and he choose the path that led to his end. That said, was well done to see the torment of his parents and sister. They have shown that the siblings were close, sometimes too close in their stupid behavior. I agree, let's hope this jolts Mari to be less of a Val clone.

Calling it--Flavia is either killed or arrested as an accessory in Adriano's flight. Thus Joaquin will be freed up and get his little one back.

Now I heartily agree that Allie dropping her case to prove Lardo was the arsonist was the dumbest decision ever. Sure it would hurt the parents, but it would also help in finding out the true killer and what this creep was up to. So we'll have the obligatory wrong person pursued? Angst alert.

In the real world, I don't think this would just drop since police departments would check for priors, etc. Of course, the SL police may be one step above crossing guard in their ability to figure things out ( Hum office break in comes to mind). Seems a lot of saving the day is falling more and more on Renato...and not all in a good way.

That comment Ren's dad made about hurting the woman you truly love...that better not have been some lame attempt to set up the Ren really loves Sylvia, but won't admit it. Bull hockey. Anyway, yeah, it's sad to see him hanging on for Allie, but this guy also just lost his mother and there could be a sense of not wanting to let go of Allie since he just had to let go of the first woman he loved.

Like I said...a psychiatrist could make a gold mine in this town.

I smiled at the candy house, but you know, there is nothing that is appealing about that thing anymore. Every time I see it I think of the staleness, germs and dust that have accumulated over the years as that box is opened and closed. And of course...it's secrets are delayed to another future date. The payoff better be stellar!

oops, my signature didn't take. That was me last comment

Hey Lila. Superb job on this sad episode (for the Lagos family). Thank you for the happy candy house screen shot. It might not be edible anymore, but someone is eventually going to be very happy or very shocked to find that diamond ring inside.

I was shocked by the Flavia-Adriano connection. But then when I thought about it, I too think that the person who screams the loudest about infidelity is many times the one committing it. I wonder if Little Ray could be Adriano's...

I hope Ren convinces Al to reconsider the fingerprints thing, or that the SL cops just do their jobs and take them unprompted. I was surprised that they automatically realized the gun belonged to Sev after seeing the fancy initials. I guess only a rich dude would do that, and there's only one in town with those initials.

I thought it was interesting at Sim reminded Sever that she HAD told him about her daughter before, but he just doesn't care about her life. What took her so long to realize that? I am surprised she ever told him though. Of course, she never told him that her daughter is the granddaughter of his employees. I don't think he'll be so happy to learn that.

He definitely won't.

On that note, I am wondering at her backstory. Why did she run out on Santiago and what has she done these past 20+ years? How long has she been Satan's whore?

The problem with Abelardo's death is that so much will die with him if anyone lets Aldonza drop the arson investigation. Renato will probably freak at that one, especially since Abelardo worked for the devil.

Uriel will have to remember Adriano's visit when he next talks to the police.

It will be a few eps (I think) before the church raffle. Can't wait to see who wins the candy house. It would be interesting to know who originally had it.

Lila – thank you for the recap! Now I can’t wait to watch my recording of this episode.

Urban – I’m with you. I wanted a more sensational ending for ‘Lardo. I feel relieved and cheated at the same time. Is that possible? Who will we all hate now? Besides Sev?

Tomas probably won’t give up any info re: Lardo, if the thugs know where Tomas lives.

”(Renato) cannot fight what he feels and essentially he’s going to bide his time, wait for the marriage to fall apart and pick up the Aldonza pieces.”
Vaya! A hottie *and* he has a brain.

Ooooh, Candy House sighting!

”The gun has initials engraved on it, “S. M.” the initials of the owner: Severiano Mendoza!”
Bazinga!

Helashelle and Sandy in TN – I’m with you, ladies! If there is not a Pato table on the Patio, let’s open up one!

Well dang, I hit Post when I meant to hit Preview . . .

I might have to FFWD--> thru the sadness of the Lagos family. Grief like this is all too real. I know people whose kids have gone astray, just like Lardo, and ended up dead. It is not always the parents' fault; sometimes a child consciously chooses the wrong path and suffers awful consequences, while the parents suffer terrible grief and pain over their loss.

Urban- We know the candy house originally belonged to Marga, the lady who owns the little shop in town. Her long lost novio gave it to her, and she never opened it, thus never seeing the ring we the audience saw him put inside in flashback. However, we were never shown his face or heard his name.

Anyone else think Uriel was about to have a heart attack after he identified Lardo's body? The big guy needs to calm down and take it easy.

I don't see how Aldonza can tell the fire investigators to NOT check fingerprints. Either this is:
1. Telenovela beanie hat time
2. Mexican law is different
3. A plot device
4. None of the above
5. All of the above
6. Time for more melon'ritas on the Patio.(or, what was that melon based drink we concocted???)

When Renato professes his love again, Aldonza cannot plead ignorance. She and Lola discussed it again last night.

For the life of me I do not understand why Cris thought he should be the one to tell Val.

Irma - mama don't let you babies grown up to be Lardo's

Abelardo - wait, wait, I want a do over

Detective - look boss, Size Matters

Flavia - what? I did the same thing as Aldonza, ran, hid and slept in another mans room

Adriano - he was begging for it

Renato - she wants me in her life who am I to refuse

Pru - look hon, be glad shit runs downhill

Severiano - I cannot win, they came highly recommended on Angie's List

Thanks, Urban! Well, I think being the chopped off arm of Sev, the real big, hot, spiked, acid-filled anvil belongs to Sev. I agree with Donnie, Lardo has paid, and more, for whatever he did but his poor parents are paying more! :(

Hey, J! Gosh! That was one of the worse death scenes I've ever seen. Yah, Urban, poor thing suffered mightily before he died and he knew for days that he would probably be killed. He tried frantically to pay off the gambling debt but Sev and Val slammed the door in his face. Wonder if Val feels any guilt? Sev, of course, planned the whole thing.

Yah, J. they certainly are setting up Cris to take the fall. Golderned previews pretty much made that clear! Maybe with Donnie's fancy ag degree the land will become terrifically productive and she'll supply regional gourmet restaurants and the Mexican version of Whole Foods with wondrous produce or something, I don't know!

Okay. Gotta break fast. Can't wait to see y'all later!

Doris- The SL police aren't the fire investigators. It's the DF police who are looking for him, but it is the job of the SL police to inform the DF police and help them with the due diligence, like take dead Lardo's prints. There isn't a warrant out for him. He was wanted for questioning and printing to either rule him out as a suspect in the fire, or show he was the culprit. But even the DF police don't yet know he did it.

Adriano should have made sure his buddies were a little bit more cold blooded, so that they could finish the second part of the job, dumping the body, instead of running off in a panic and leaving the not quite dead yet Lardo there.

Thank you, Diva!, ITA about Cris seeing darkness for the first time. He had good reason to be dazed. His need to tell others was not just to inform them, but it's very normal to have to repeat such a story over and over because it feels so unreal.

Yeah, can't wait to hear what others think of the Flavia/Adriano connection! I didn't sense that they were intimately involved. . .unless they are and it was covered by the chaos of the execution of Lardo.

I don't understand why it's even Aldonza's decision whether they take the fingerprints or not. THANK YOU! That's the same impression I got, as if she could determine whether or not they take the prints!! That was so preposterous that I told it as the police WOULD take the prints, but she didn't want to use them to prove Lardo's guilt in the fire. Ditto the rest of that last paragraph!!

Thanks, Tofie! You nailed all the evidence! If this gets pinned on Cris, I can't see it lasting more than an episode as these guys seem to be good at getting us all riled up and then resolving by the end of the ep or next day!

Renato may not have to wait long and his little bird will fly right to him. Yah, Tofie. She certainly will go weeping to his arms if/when Cris is arrested for Lardo's murder and, of course, he will get Cris out! He should be able to get enough hugs to tide him over until the next, and he hopes, final time she runs to him!

Renato is Aldonza's lawyer (and business partner). Why wouldn't it make sense for her to request his services if her husband gets arrested? The two of them aren't on the outs. Is there any reason why she wouldn't logically ask Ren for his help? I don't get how that somehow makes it seem Al is running to his arms in a romantic way. She's never stopped confiding in him.

UA @7:24, Totally agree. We've wondered at her uberbitchiness. Maybe little Ray is not even Jocks!

Thank you, David!
Sev keeps digging himself a deeper hole.
Totally agree and am glad! Astute observation re Cande with no instinct for mothering: she absolutely did not pick up on Cris maybe being disturbed by having someone die in his arms! She was more concerned about his yucky jacket! Sheesh!

I don't see Aldonza running to Renato in a romantic way but he already said to his dad the main reason for going to SL and remaining close is because he knows it only a matter of time before there is trouble in paradise and he will be there to give her a soft landing (in a romantic way). What I fault her with is knowing he is in love with her and believing that won't cause an issue (with him or Cris) at some point. Attorney ok, close business partners, uh, touchie but ok, the man she will run to when a problem arises in her marriage, at best very, very naive of her.

Hey, Daisy! You have some great theories, Daisy. I don't know if you keep track of your record but yes, you can call Flavia going down in an Adriano raid!

Excellent point about dropping the arson investigation. Does Renato have to go along with that? Had to laugh at your comment on our increasingly toxic candy house! Hee Hee!

Thank you, Vivi Vivi, I'm with you, Tofie, Daisy and others that the SL cops should follow procedure and do their jobs. The Chief sure gave Cris the stink eye: he'll probably think Cris took Daddy's gun to do the job. The Chief will go hat in hand and apologize but insist he has to take sonny boy into custody, especially after receiving a certain phone call. Sev will probably rat on Adriano and have him killed before the police can take him into custody!

Thank you, Doris! Can't wait to see Tomas reaction to Lardo's death. Will it have any lasting impact on him. . .for "good?" Will he stop his conniving ways and even give up his pursuit of putrid Pru?

Doris, the grief scenes were very realistic and touching! Yah! FFWD>>>>

Thank you Lila. I can't believe Lardo is dead. I was hoping he would have something to do with Sev's downfall.

Are we going to see Cris getting the blame for the crime when he's the one who called the police in the first place? And stuck around to answer questions? And none of his fingerprints on the gun? I shake my head.

So I did say that usually the one who exhibits extreme jealousy is usually the one who is actually cheating, could I have been correct in this case with Flavia? At the time I would never have thought that she was actually two-timing Joaquin, but now it looks like she is.

5Ft, totally agree with you on how the cops are handling this crime.

Ooh, I just thought of something. Abelardo's death will clear the way for Pru to continue with Tomas.

We have Cande as a witness to Lardo coming to their house and being in Sev's office where the gun was kept, which can explain where Lardo got the gun and why it was at the crime scene.

Also too, if Cris does have to spend a few days in jail until this gets cleared up, the marriage may stay a secret a bit longer.

Why would Severiano or Cande let Cris stay in jail for a few days or allow Renato to be the one to get him out of a jam? They may be angry with their son but he is their son and do not know of the marriage yet. It is in both their interest for Cande to disclose Abelardo in the office prior and there is motive for Adriano to kill him. All Severiano has to do is run all those guys down and kill them or make sure they never return.

Thank you, Cathyx! I was actually thinking that maybeTomas would be shaken and try to mend his ways, straighten up and fly right. That seems a little unlikely even as I say it. Just seems like if he has even one brain cell he'd look at the evidence for crime not only doesn't pay, it can get your ass killed!

Above where I bolded Tofie's quote about Renato's little bird flying back to him, that should have been italics instead of bold. Anyway, yes, it's appropriate for Renato to act as Donnie's lawyer but he himself feels an ethical delimma in that he very well knows he has ulterior motives for being johnny on the spot for her every crisis. If Renato goes dark, it may be more gray in that maybe he won't act with the legal vigor he could to defend Cris or he will let his love for Aldonza cloud his legal perspective.

I wondered if Renato would go along with Donnie's not wanting to submit the fingerprints for the arson investigation but you stated it with even more accuracy, Vivi:

t is the job of the SL police to inform the DF police and help them with the due diligence, like take dead Lardo's prints. There isn't a warrant out for him. He was wanted for questioning and printing to either rule him out as a suspect in the fire, or show he was the culprit.

Will Renato insist this be done? Did we see a scene where DF and SL consulted? Will Renato press this forward or let Cris take the fall? None of this sounds like Renato but his Dad said those exact same words at the dinner table and while he didn't break out in song ala Luther Ingram but he DID say he loves Aldonza and wants her in his arms, right or wrong.

So, it's double dealing knowing he's attentive to Aldonza's every heart beat and breath, not just because he's a crack lawyer and friend, but because HE WANTS HER and may blur or cross some ethical lines to win her.

Candela would have nothing to lose by disclosing that Abelardo came into the house unauthorized and she saw him in the study where the gun was kept in the desk drawer. However...

...both she and Sev might want to punish Cris for going after Aldonza to DF so they might not be so quick to bail him out. It would also give them a perfect opportunity to rant about how lesser people want to bring them down to their level (or lower).

This does mean that the marriage will remain a secret a little longer than we expected it would. Here's hoping Cris keeps quiet until after he walks out of the cell and the precinct house. If he talks sooner, I can see Sev and Candela walking out on him or telling him that he will have to renounce Aldonza if he wants to get the charges dropped.

See me at 11:26 and Tofie at 11:44. Sev and Candy may let Cris stew in jail just a little bit while Sev extends fake condolences to Uriel, who tells him about Adriano's threatening visit to their home the day of Lardo's murder. Then, upstanding citizen Sev makes sure Uriel shares this with the police while Sev gets yet somebody else or even one of the three stooges, dark haired third guy or striped hat guy to bump off Adriano thus silencing him from squealing on Sev or them

After the DF cops came back from SL empty handed, the DF chief told Ren that they couldn't do anything more since it's not their jurisdiction. He said all they could do was wait for Lardo to return to DF. It might be the case that the SL cops don't even bother to inform the DF cops about Lardo's murder because they hate being bossed around by big city cops, they don't see it as their problem, or are just too lazy to complicate things for themselves.

Okay! Thanks, Vivi! Here is where Ren could step in and do the right thing and tell the DF police about Lardo's murder so they can complete their arson investigation! It seems if SL doesn't talk to DF it is ethical for Ren to do so! Can Aldonza forbid him to or say, ok I want to drop the case and Ren just keep silent?

All of this is to say that I can see how or why the SL cops might not take it upon themselves to print Lardo. But Ren should ignore Al, or convince her that they need to make sure the SL police do it. He should point out to her that exposing Lardo as an arsonist is not about hurting Irma and Uriel, but instead about showing that Sever is connected to the fire and establishing some real hard evidence of a plot against her.

Lila- We were writing at the same time. ITA!

I hope that it was Renato does, convince her it's key in establishing a plot against her masterminded by ev. Even though we heard him say that her asking the case be dropped is what he expected of her, that doesn't preclude him pressing the issue as you describe, Vivi. I certainly hope so.

Of course, this is the one time that Donnie didn't suspect Sev being behind a crime but it might dawn on her: Remember she said she feels that somehow Abelardo is connected to her story with Cris. It will probably dawn on her that Sev IS behind this as well and understand why the arson investigation has to be pursued. Besides, Irma, Uriel and Mari deserve to know who killed their son.

Like I said, these guys are good at freaking us out for an episode then resolving it. Even if Cris is picked up, with Cande confronting Abelardo in her house; Adriano going to Uriels and Abelardo's last frantic words to his Mom, I don't see how they'll hold Cris more than one episode.

So if Sev was the smart guy he likes to think himself to be, he would now just pile it on as thick as all get out that Lardo was a loose cannon he couldn't control. Cande could contest to the fact the kid broke into the office while Sev was out of town, etc. Lardo is the one who has finger prints all over ( I'm sure they are on the friggin' gun!!). It's Sev's word against a dead man at this point. And I don't think he has to worry about Adriano, or for that matter Tomas. The latter is going to be scared you-know-what to keep quiet.

I'm thinking all this angst on having it look like Cris could be accused is so much drama. There isn't anything, even Val's big mouth can't really put Cris in the thick of things. It would be at that point that if the police haven't done their due diligence, Renato could hook them up with the detectives in Mexico.

There has to be something better than Lardo's death to stop the lovebirds being together. Might stop the wedding though. Scratch that--I just remembered Allie got all bent out of shape seeing Val mack on Cris and didn't give him a chance to say a word...so it really could be something pretty ridiculous. She's scared witless on the intimacy part anyway...would she again subconsciously sabotage her own marriage with another over the top reaction to something?

I'm also just waiting for it to somehow slip this marriage isn't consummated and Val hears. She will have a field day rubbing it into Allie she has the hubby and then some. With Allie's insecurities....ouch!

Daisynjay

Well Val won't be alone in relishing the marriage not consummated. Renato will be a very happy camper.

Abelardo dying in Cris's arms has affected him but wonder if Aldonza will even notice.

Renato is just being an attorney and responding how he should. Even when Cris crashed his car the first thing out of Renato's mouth as he approached was if Cris had insurance.

Drama and adrenalin just follow Cris and Donnie around while Renato and Donnie get all the contemplative and cerebral moments together.

Captain and Tennille: Drama! Drama will keep us togethuuh!

Lila...Thanks so much for capturing the tragedy of this episode which was so hard to watch...as Lardo lay dying and the aftermath with his family turn to pieces in grief..too real not to feel for anyone who has lost a loved one. We knew Lardo as a conniving little weasel, but to his family he was a beloved son and brother.

Well, I am trying to tear myself away from caraycaray and the Mad Men marathon so that I can post my speaking final grades and get some chores done. Have a good weekend , all.

Thank you, dear Susanlynn. Yah. I need to get up off my rusty dusty and get some chores done myself! not too many dull moments in this piece, hunh? Take care and see you later, Susanlynn!

Just finished watching this episode.

The only good thing about all of Irma's crying is that her green eyeshadow is disappearing. Bless her heart.

The Lardo/goodbye-to-Irma/deathscene/family grief (thru which I FFWDed) were like something right out of MCDLVR episode. Gah.

tofie-OMG, your list totally rocks today. Sev's had me LOL. I was thinking the same thing, just not quite so eloquent.

We got a hint, early in the episode, about why Cande & Sev stay together. On the phone, he basically told her those malditos caballos help them maintain their position in town. I am assuming he meant financial position. Cande might own the land & house, but looks like Sev's horse business is the cash flow that keeps everything going.

Sara and other teachers here on The Patio --- I changed my avatar for y'all, to a photo posted on FB by a teacher friend of mine. Unfortunately, it stays thumbnail size when I click on it.
The left-side caption says "teacher at beginning of school year"
The right-side caption says "teacher at end of school year."

So, now that I've slept on it, and with further clarification about the details from the patio peeps...maybe the conversation about Lardo's fingerprints wasn't about dropping charges--since there haven't been any charges and he's just being sought for questioning--but whether they were going to remind the SL cops that they need to be taking fingerprints to send to the arson investigators in the DF or not. Which still shouldn't matter, but ends up mattering because it doesn't seem like the SL cops are very good at this whole investigating thing. If they say something, the SLPD has to do it as they have no justification for refusing. But if they say nothing and it just happens to not get done, then nobody really cares because the arson case isn't high priority and the neighbors are getting paid off.

I thought the issue was the fingerprints would have to be taken from a dead body and understand Aldonza was sensitive to the family and what they are already dealing with.

It *should be* part of the routine processing of the body and not have anything to do with any pending charges. So if his friends come back and say "I swear, he shot himself" they'll at least know whether his prints were on the gun. So that's issue 1, are they actually going to do what's necessary to investigate Lardo's death? That should include fingerprints, and should not have anything to do with the DF arson investigation.

Issue 2 is, are they going to pass along the fingerprints to the DF arson investigators because they know he was being sought for questioning. That's where Aldonza/Renato has a chance to intervene, not by saying "Don't do it!" because that's not up to them, but by not saying "Hey, make sure you do it." If this goes down in a remotely realistic way, and the SL cops do their job and forward the prints to the DF arson investigators, the grieving family won't be told "Sorry, we had to do it, Aldonza Alcocer insisted." At least this way it's just "Sorry, it's procedure."

Of course, this being Santa Lucia, the fact that she's not pushing for prints probably means they won't bother to collect any, or investigate Lardo's death in any meaningful way beyond asking questions (to which they will get nothing but lies) and arresting whoever the most fingers point at regardless of the lack of evidence, and Aldonza will still be blamed for it in some way because everything that happens there is her fault.

Size matters... okay, tofie, I just got that. Ha!

One good thing is the relationship that Rennie has with that detective in DF. They both are smart cookies who together cansokve this murky mess and bring that narcissistic asshat Severed down.

Lila-yummy candy house.

The next thing that could happen is: and as sick as this sounds, I wouldn't be surprised if crazy candy & hot stuff sev set their son up to take the rapp for this murder, just to get him away from ally. In their minds "we must protect him from himself". Yeah thats why.

And for a while renato will be happy. He'd better enjoy this small victory. Cause as it goes in saops, it don't last. This is getting good. I think I'll give it a chance.

Nina

soaps, it's spelled s-o-a-p. that's how I meant to spell it. Above→→→→→→→→↑

Nina

The SL cops should absolutely check if Lardo's prints were on the gun found near his body, if they are competent. Did anyone notice if Adriano was wearing gloves?

Thanks, Nina! You know, this being a soap maybe both these things will happen:

Of course, this being Santa Lucia, the fact that she's not pushing for prints probably means they won't bother to collect any, or investigate Lardo's death in any meaningful way beyond asking questions (to which they will get nothing but lies) and arresting whoever the most fingers point at regardless of the lack of evidence, and Aldonza will still be blamed for it in some way because everything that happens there is her fault.--Diva

And, from you:

candy & hot stuff sev set their son up to take the rapp for this murder, just to get him away from ally. In their minds "we must protect him from himself".

But, since Sev isn't freaked out about a Cris/Donnie hook-up in the same way as Cande, I go for him making sure the cops are sicced on Adriano and kill him before they can get to him. Sev is the other kind of sick enough to take the opportunity for Cris being in jail to try to assault Aldonza again.

Hey. Teachers out there, how the heck to you spell the "sic" as in "sick the dog on someone" and what is the past tense of that. Even a google didn't answer satisfactorily!

Not only did not notice if Adriano was wearing gloves but third guy at the bottom of the stairs disarmed Lardo and I didn't see him pass the gun to Adriano. It was as if Adriano had his own gun. Wouldn't he, if he was given orders to kill Lardo? Why would he expect Lardo to bring his own gun for his own execution? So Sev's gun is the suspected, not the real murder weapon which they should be able to verify with a simple ballistics exam, shouldn't they? I don't watch all these csi shows so y'all help me out, please.

Did anyone else notice when aldonza and her auntee was leaving the hospital, they saw val and lardo, (I think that was him) tickling each others tonsels (kissing)? This was when padre J was in that accident on purpuse car reck, A week or so back. They stood a few seconds and watched. Val was so upset that she tried to off herself. That was fake, I guess they saw how fake that so-call suicide atempt was. I thought about that when she was harassing ally with those two busy bitties.

Thats going to be a funfill funeral, padre J has got quite a eulogy to prepare.

Nina.

Yeah, Nina, not sure when you joined us, but if you know the approximate date you can go back and see in the comments how we worked that whole event over. Val's true shock and sadness at hearing of Lardo's death is because it has been long established that they were going together for quite some time. Pru was trying to get Val to tone down her sadness so her father wouldn't suspect this.

Yep. Val and Lardo have been hooking up since years before- before she went after Cris in Spain. Glad to see she has some feelings.

Hurray, I have a new computer, so can catch up on the blog. Have not had time to watch last night's latest, but will savor it tonight.

Pru (I have also decided) is a bitch, but the gal knows how to wear clothes.

Thank you for the recaps the past few days. I am reading all of them.

See you all Monday.

Nina that time that Val tried to kill herself was when Cris called off the wedding, not when she was caught kissing Lardo. There were probably some slaps thrown over the kissing incident though.

Val's response after being busted by Al and Ade was to panic. Then she decided to beat Aldonza to the punch by telling Cris that she and Lardo had sorta kinda dated. Cris didn't care.

That's also when she stopped pretending to be nice to Aldonza, which she had been doing for a while, even getting sympathy from Al for being dumped. Al blew her little game out of the water, when Val was acting like she and Cris were back together.

I didn't have a chance to comment the last couple of days, but when you all were discussing the amount of slapping in this show I lol'd. I said to my husband that night that there is more slapping in this show than all the TNs I've watched put together.

Emeraldrose! Thanks, hon! See you later!

I know the slaps have got to be a great inside joke on the set--I know they certainly are here on the patio!

;o)

I remember when all of that happened, the suicide attempt and al called her on it and then she, like you said vivi stopped pretending to be nice to her. I was just saying that it came to my mind when I saw those two old gossips harassing her and then Val decided to join in on the fun. That slap was good tho. We'll be seeing a lot more those I think.

Nina

Lila, according to the American Heritage Dictionary, "sic" or "sick," meaning "To urge to attack or chase; to set upon or chase," is spelled as above, and the past tense is "sicced" or "sicked."

David

Lila - in literature I've seen it spelled 'sic' as in "sic 'em, Fido." and I always picture a 5-lb Yorkie going for someone's ankle. LOL

Thank you David! It's a word often used by I can't say I honestly ever saw it written. I started to say sicced but it looks weird! :D

Doris, I think of a neighborhood mutt named Blackie that used to chase people all the time. I even had a dream as an adult that he caught me and I could feel his teeth sinking into my leg.

I like your doggie better!

:)

Yes Lila, you did lighten the mood on an otherwise dark episode with your picture of the candy house right at the start. I was surprised but loved it as soon as I saw it. That was great.

Lila---Your recap was excellent as
always.
She tried to slap him back into childhood was a great line. Quite a slap wasn't it?
He (Lardo) bursts out the door just as he entered. Was very descriptive. He really did burst through that door both coming in and going out.

J in Oregon---I'm confused about your comment. What's wrong with a truck farm? Ali has an agriculture
degree and probably will be growing melons. Instead of paying someone to truck the melons to market, she probably will have her own truck/trucks and her own employees to do it once she gets Sev's animals off of the land.

That does lead to a question--what
if she looses in court because Sev has paid off the judge? What then?

I expected Lardo to get an anvil but didn't expect it this soon.

Just about everything has been said already and several think that Cris might end up in jail for Lardo's murder. Well at least until Renato can get him out. It
could happen but nothing would add up. Cris called for help ambulance/ police? when he found Lardo shot and his fingerprints were not on the gun. Also Cris didn't have a reason to kill Lardo unless someone might say that Cris was still mad about way back when Lardo smacked him in the head. Possible but not likely.

Lardo was desperate and needed money. Val caught him stealing, he
went around saying that he was in big trouble and needed money. How would Cris fit into that?

Also Cande caught Lardo in Sev's office with the door locked.

Did anyone notice that when Lardo finally got the desk drawer open, the latch was in the up, locked position? When he got caught by Candy, he hurriedly closed the desk drawer but it didn't close all the way because the latch on the lock was still in the up or locked position? Sev would have known right away.

David---he pulls a gun that he doesn't know how to use. My answer---It was a pistol. Point it and pull the trigger. If the safety was on, it doesn't take a genius to figure how to flip the safety off. Of course if you are panicked, well-----

Flavia and Adriano threw me. I guess he was why she was so anxious to get rid of Joaquin.
Two winners???

How many people know that Lardo owed money to Adriano? Thomas?
Right Lila---Sev probably will have Adriano killed to keep him from talking.

This is turning into a classic, well for me anyway.

Renato hanging around to pick up the pieces? Poor guy. He's got it bad but it's Aldonza so I understand. She's worth waiting for.
the gringo

gringo, you make good points. Especially about that desk and its (I assume) now-busted lock. It seems like if the cops actually look at the physical evidence it should be obvious that Cris had nothing to do with it. If anything, now that he has proof that he's married to Aldonza, that makes him look like a far less likely suspect, who had little to no motive for wanting Lardo dead.

I'm sure Val's going to try to pin this on Aldonza, but I can't even picture what kind of story she would spin...or how that story would stand up to Cris saying he was walking her home, and the eventual reveal of the marriage. If Cris does end up getting this pinned on him, I think it's more likely that it won't happen because anyone's trying to make him look guilty, but because they're trying to make Aldonza look guilty and their aim is bad.

Thank you, Gringo! You Do make good points, as does Diva. I don't generally like to discuss previews but we've pretty much chewed and digested this episode. Val was calling, I suppose, the Police, saying she knew someone who had a motive. . .if I remember correctly. Anyhoo, she was lying/snitching on someone. I always assumed it was Cris whe would be lying on but Diva, you bring up the possibility of Donnie. Yes, we all know EVERYthing is Donnie's fault. Yah. She's a good liar but she's not THAT good. Does she even know about Lardo and Tomas harassing her that day Cris rescued her? I don't know. Doesn't make sense.

Once Uriel calms down he'll surely tell the SL cops about Adriano coming to his house looking for and threatening Lardo. I maintain, the false accusation and possible arrest will be a single episode thing.

Who does know about that day by the waterfall? Everyone who was actually there, for sure. Aldonza told her mom and Adelina. I don't remember if she told anyone else. Lola, maybe? And what about Cris--did he say something to Emmanuel? I'm almost positive Val doesn't know anything about it or she wouldn't have thought that Lardo had a prayer of "seducing" Aldonza back when that was her Stupid Plan of the Day.

If that gets out, it could be seen as motive for either Cris or Aldonza, but at the same time--wouldn't the cops wonder why they waited so long? And wouldn't they think it's just too far-fetched that they waited years...to bump off only Lardo...with the gun that it appears he stole from Sev's drawer, based on fingerprints and a broken lock? The typical CSI-type show, I'd think they would look for another explanation. SLPD? Where a cop actually has to ask what to do with a weapon found at a crime scene? I have a feeling beanies will be necessary.

Or, maybe we're due for a pleasant surprise and the promos are meaningless. I wish I'd been keeping track of how often they've been accurate vs. misleading vs. completely meaningless...like the time they kept saying Val was preparing "the ultimate revenge" and we were all "aw, damn, not another tired fake pregnancy plot!"...and nothing happened. Nothing that could have been construed as either "ultimate" or "revenge."

Who knows what the writers have in store for us come Monday but I for one am counting the hours.

I guess that sometimes people (myself?) tend to focus on the
lead actors and actresses. However I must say that both of Lardo's parents gave it their all.
They almost had me feeling sorry for their dirt bag son. Something like that is devastating to a parent and they both really poured on the grief. They played their parts so well that I felt it was really genuine and not a case of over acting. This novela has a super great cast.
the gringo

Do you think that AL wonders if Chris killed Lardo because he thought he raped AL? She saw how crazy Chris got demanding a name when she told him a about the rape.

We do have an amazing cast on this show. Even small parts, like Lulu, the Padre's assistant...that actress seems to be taking her job seriously, not just phoning it in because it's a small part.

susanlynn, I don't think she's thinking that as of right now, but I think she could be led there...except for the part where she was with him most of the night, he didn't seem particularly murderous, and as far as she knows he wasn't carrying a gun.

If he was in the habit of carrying a gun on him, it would be way easier to convince her that he met up with Lardo on the way home, he got a little mouthy, and Cris lost his temper.

Kat- Well said about all the actors taking their characters seriously, even the small ones like Lulu. Hack, even the background maid at Las Animas made the most of her scene with Lardo when she questioned him about why he needed to go to Sever's office. I sure hope she doesn't get fired for it.

Heck, not hack.

Hahaha, yep, there are no hacks on this show :D Er, other than the literal physical arm removal!

I feel like Cande's staff live under the constant threat of firing at all times.

Severiano knows that Lardo's fingerprints were found at the burned apartment and on the gas can. Thus, his plan to get rid of the evidence (as in Lardo). However, los imbeciles he hired didn't get rid of the body, so now he must execute Plan B. He will (IMO) act all friendly and empathetic to the grieving parents while convincing them to cremate their poor dead son whom he was trying to help and straighten out by hiring and trusting him to build his confidence. They will, of course, see that the best, quickest way to start the grieving process is to cremate him and keep his ashes so he will always be with them. By the time the Keystone Kops figure out, "Duhh, should we take those fingerprints after all?" - too late! They will be gone!

It didn't seem to me that Flavia and Adriano had any sort of romantic relationship. I thought he must have been either her brother (that nobody knew about - maybe she was ashamed of his life of crime) or a cousin. He didn't even give little Ray a second glance, so I think he took her in but is just tolerating her presence.

Daisy? Is that you up there as Anon? This intriguing theory sounds like something from the mind of Daisy! Hadn't thought of cremation! Yikes! That would totally do away with the fingerprints, wouldn't it!

Hey! I should know this, but didn't the Police also talk to Uriel about Abelardo?

Plus, knowing that Abelardo lived in SL, is it too much to expect that there is some way the DF Police could find out about Abelardo's murder (I don't know, intra-police department communication or something?) and get there to see that they get what they need from the corpse?

I think there was some mumbling on the part of the DF cop about "understaffed" and "not a priority"?

Yeah. I was actually surprised the DF cops did as much as they did by sending two officers to SL to try to track Lardo down. I'm sure it's not a huge priority for them, when Mexico City has FAR more serious crimes than arson (that didn't kill anybody).

I see, thanks guys. Oh well, guess we'll find out tomorrow. Whatever Vile says on the phone, it'll just be another one of her plans that flopped!

Ay, Val. Does anything she tries work out right? Maybe she'd be better off finishing one of her many "almost-finished" degrees and doing something useful. Screw marrying a rich guy...get a job or start a business and make some money that would actually be hers. It can't be any harder than trying to snag Cris again.

Lila, thank for the great recap that produced so many comments.

I finally came to me that Pru reminds me of Carol Burnett. I can even see Harvey Corman as Hum. Now, if someone joins the cast that resembles Tim Conway, I am going to LOL. Pru's scenes while she is knee deep in her beverage of choice are priceless.

Val is an idiota, when will she learn that her schemes simply do not work. I am sure she will try the old pregnancy thing before the finale.

Rosemary Primera

Rosemary Primera, now that you say it...Pru sure does bear a resemblance to Carol in looks and demeanor!

Thank you Rosemary Primera! Wow! That's so tru about Pru! She and Carol Burnett are kindred souls! That's hilarious! Let's hope by the time the show is over she's doing a real life rendition of Carol's cleaning lady!

;o)

Lila, one can only wish!

Gringo: - "I'm confused about your comment. What's wrong with a truck farm?"
Reply: -- Nothing wrong with a truck farm. It was just surprising, after all Aldi's mysterious hints about "Mis Planes", that it wasn't something more spectacular. Also makes me wonder just how many years Hum leased her that property.

J in Oregon

I believe the lease is only for one year for now. I'm catching up slowly on episodes I missed while away last month, and in a conversation between Al and Ren, he clearly states that he'll help her in her plans to recuperate her lands. THOSE are the "mis planes". I don't think we are yet privy on how she plans to turn a year-long lease into permanent ownership, but that's what she wants. As for what she plans on doing WITH the land- I don't think it's a surprise that she wants to farm it like her father and mother, but be successful at it.

That year, which never sounded like a whole lot of time if she's planning something agricultural, is slowly dwindling away. How much time has passed since she signed that lease?

Oh yeah, the clock ticks. Aldonza's "mis planes" were flimsy at best and her operating capital has dried up. Heck, all she'll have left is the proceeds from the sell of a burnt out apartment. No bank or private investor that knew a thing about business would continue to dump cash down that hole. Renato is clearly not a businessman and while his mama gave him a bundle how much does he float her before he wants some...er, return? Perhaps Aldonza should start a petting zoo or use the property as a junk yard (truck farm) or surprise me and pull a money tree out of her butt and grow a bunch of those.

It seems to me that Aldonza is operating on the belief that she doesn't just have a year-- That she will be there permanently. So the time isn't an issue for her, just the capital.

Think she's got the capital covered. Business acumen be damned when she's got both Cris and Renato ready with checkbooks. No way Cris lets Renato spend his way into Aldonza's heart. They'll both throw peso's at her like confetti. All she's got to do is not sleep with her husband.

Aldonza isn't the manipulative bitch that implies. However, their marriage can't stay a secret forever and she needs to be aware that Sev will cut off Cristobal's dinero once he finds out. He may even disown him altogether, although Candela would probably fight that.

Not implying that at all UA. Renato will stay around as long as he believes one day he'll get the girl. He admitted to his father Aldonza is the reason he is going to SL. She has not proven to be a business wiz and worthy of his deep pockets, she isn't paying for his legal work and she's married. This is on Renato and when or if he ever accepts he does not get the girl his mother encouraged to get and partially why she gave him a war chest.

Not sure I agree with your sentiment Tofie. I think that Renato is a nice guy who truly likes Aldonza and he sticks by his friends. Perhaps he's intrigued by the idea of living in a small town.
For these TNs to work, the characters need unlimited funds to do what they do. They have to have an open checkbook and the time off to spend it. And the education to do whatever they plan to do.

It's Cris who's supposed to have the business sense. Renato, Pato and Silvia know the law. Aldonza (theoretically) knows how to grow stuff and maybe knows the land. Joaquin knows the land and, I'm guessing how to go about selling the crop. Cris is supposed to have gotten a business degree, but I'm not sure where the line is with the stuff he's not going to get involved in. Just the fight over whether the rental agreement includes the land? Or is he not going to help run the place because she considers that part of her "revenge"? If he's not going to help, I'm at a loss to think what he'll do with his time. He's definitely going to get cut off soon and I'm not sure whether he ever had any money that was just his vs. ability to draw from family accounts/credit. Maybe he's just planning to work on his tan.

Yes, Renato said to his dad that he's waiting for Aldonza to be available again, and that was his reason for going to SL, that was very clear. We also get a lot of shows where we see this situation decades later and the family friend who was "always" in love with the widow still waits another few years before even saying anything, so as not to intrude on her grief, or out of the habit of keeping quiet about his love, or not wanting to upset the children who he loves as if they were his own. And sometimes, by then, they end up realizing that the person they were in love with is either gone or never existed and they move on. So I'm not seeing anything really skeevy about Renato's behavior. Now, if it turns out he's written up divorce papers that he carries around with him at all times so he can whip 'em out the first time Aldonza tells him she's had a fight with Cris, then I will stand corrected!

Kat- I remember that exact situation of the family lawyer/doctor/etc. being in love with the wife of their BFF/client and waiting patiently for decades until the husband passed away. Off the top of my head, Soy Tu Duena and Sortilegio. Unfortunately for the doctor friend in Sortilegio, the older Victoria chose her son's young, hot, studly friend, instead of the older reliable doctor who had pined for her for decades.

I feel like the writers have not written the Aldonza/Ren dynamic very well.

Our first scene with the two of them was Aldonza being an ice princess and Ren's friends (Pato and Silvia) telling him to give up that dream.

But then suddenly she and Ren are friends when she needs a lawyer.

Then we see her a little jealous of Silvia at the funeral and Aldonza even tells Lola that maybe she has feelings for Ren.

I feel like the writers just use Ren for romantic tension/conflict when needed. Then they just stuff it back into a box until they need it again.

There's still a lot of show left, though.

My point being (that is if I actually have one) that the whole Ren/Aldonza dynamic is for me just one of plot convenience. There's no point in giving myself a headache trying to figure it out.

I believe the turning point in the Ren/Aldonza relationship came when he supported her after her mother's death. She only gave him a chance to go on a date and maybe think of him as a suitor after Adelina spoke to her about opening herself up. Unfortunately, that got stalled by finding their parents in mid lip-lock. But it was Roberta's death that brought them close and was when Aldonza seemed to accept Ren as a true friend. Since then, he has served as a sounding board and a champion of her causes; and she was able to support him when his mother died (knowing exactly what he was going through as she had just experienced the same loss). Things like that can bond people very quickly.

They're playing with the "men and women can't be friends" trope and it bugs.

Lola and Cris are friends. Silvia and Pato are friends.

Thanks for the reminders, Vivi.

Lola and Cris are friends, true. But I feel like they've thrown a few hints that maybe Silvia and Pato could be more than friends.

Is it just me or are the writers messing with us more in this TN?

Hm...how about "Men and women can't be friends when one of them is the protagonista"? ;)

I have serious reservations about considering Cris "friends" with anybody. There's that power dynamic of him being sort-of-the-boss. I'm still holding a grudge about him waking Lola's family up in the middle of the night and the way he keeps doing crappy things to Emmanuel and then insisting that they're "brothers." (Has he even talked to Emmanuel since that happened?)

Pato and Silvia, though, totally buds.

I've not picked up on any vibes between Pato and Silvia. Silvia is totally gaga for Ren, and Pato is head over heels for Lola.

Really? Pato and Silvia totally buds?

I am really starting to feel like the dummy. I swear I saw a spark a few episodes back. I can't remember the scene exactly.

Ugh. I'm going to quit while I'm ahead. I have no business trying to figure TNs out. I never catch anything and misread everything.

They kinda had a moment when he was all pouty over seeing Lola with Emmanuel and she was teasing him about "noooo, you're the cutest!" It was right on the edge of flirting and then they pulled it back to "just friends" when he rolled his eyes at her.

Men & women can be friends, I have several that predate Mr. tofie and I mentioned before one I hiked the Appalachian Trail with as a young woman for a month and he saw me naked. Some I stay with when I travel overseas both straight and gay, married, in a relationship or single. None of them I'm still close friends with ever professed romantic love for me and one actually is closer to Mr. tofie now than he and I ever were. There have been a few that crossed my own personal boundary but those remain only an acquaintance not a close friend.

I lean toward Renato is being used as a very cute plot device.

I'm not saying I don't think men and women can't be friends. That's way too much of a blanket statement for me and I despise lumping all men or all women together as if we're not unique individuals. I'm saying it's an idea that movies/TV have overused, and with TN's perhaps especially when it comes to protagonistas...because protagonistas are irresistible...men are mysteriously drawn to them even when they have no redeeming personality traits...any man who sticks around for too long ends up getting homicidal...the only way to resist is to get out of the range of the Eau de Protagonista and start a relationship with someone else...then and only then will you be safe!

I never turn down a cute plot device. Especially after...well, perhaps it's better if I don't bring up the specter of The Show That Shall Not Be Named....

Funny you referenced TSTSNBN cause I was thinking of that one too. That scar is deep

Luckily, so far in this tn, Eau de Protagonista is only affecting one other person besides the protagonist. Valeria and Renato. No one else seems to be infected and affected, yet.

We got to add Severiano to that list

Hopefully, the memory will fade with time. I've mostly forgotten TdA, even after looking at my old recaps for it. Apparently I was quite ragey by the end of that one, yet I have no actual recollection of anything but William Levy rowing a kayak...just this writing that's allegedly mine, but has no feeling of familiarity. I'm hoping the same thing will happen with LG...but I will never forget my vow to never recap a Mejia or Latoodle show ever again!

This show sometimes is helped by my recollections so that I think "OK, that got a little rough, but it's still nowhere near as bad." And then sometimes, because they raised the bar so high, I'm disappointed when they fall back on old tricks.

I hate the idea that men and women can't be just friends. Or that this is only possible when the woman is ugly.

Let's see whose pheromones are most powerful (attract people who want to jump their bones and make babies with them)...

Aldonza- Cris and Renato
Cris- Aldonza and Valeria
Valeria- Lardo, Emannuel, and Cris
Renato- Silvia, and kinda-sorta Aldonza
Lola- Emmanuel and Pato
Pato- Nobody (maybe Mari, but she's hot for almost any young man)
Silvia- Renato (at some point- enough to date for a while and do it on a desk)
Mari- Nobody (maybe Emannuel who is slowly getting there)
Emannuel- Lola and Mari
Lardo- Valeria
Tomas- Prudencia

Tofie- Sever will jump anything. What woman has he NOT had indecent thoughts about or licked his chops at? Dominga? Aldonza is just added temptation since she's a tool for getting back at Roberta and Ray.

good point Vivi, even saw him undress Adelina with his eyes while threatening her

If we leave the making babies part out of it, you can add me to the Pato list.

Or maybe I just want him to come out ahead of Mari :D

Is it really their pheromones, or the pheromones of their available cash? Is Valeria suddenly going to find Em irresistible when his true parentage is revealed? Would Em be having warm fuzzies for Mari if she hadn't given him that check?

Speaking of Mari...her little theme song reminds me of something like a music box or a carousel. Puts me in mind of carnivals and cotton candy. I feel like they're going way overboard with the "See! She's young!" cues.

One would think that Sev would be satisfied to gloat over the fact that Roberta killed Raymundo so save his sorry butt.

Aldonza will be devastated when she finds this out.

Kat- Don't know how Val will react to Eman once his true parentage is revealed, but it certainly isn't money that's been driving her to Lardo's arms all these years. Girl just has needs and he meets them, especially since Cris has cut her off sexually since their return to SL from Spain.

Pobre de Val! Her only lover is dead! Who's gonna meet those needs now!?

No, I'm serious...this is part of her characterization. She's young and has a healthy sexual appetite and she doesn't believe in suppressing it, but she does (I think) believe in discretion. How does one discreetly recruit a new lover in a town that small?

Will Eman really have any claim to Las Animas? We suspect that Cande is really the owner of it all. Sev just "married in" and used his business acumen to make it more profitable. But does Sev really legally own any part of that business?

Val should get with Tomas. That would make for some fun plotwise.

I don't think he does. Mexican law doesn't give him any rights over it unless he married Candela when her parents were still alive and the surviving one left it to the two of them jointly in his/her will.

However, I don't think that was the case.

Cristobal would certainly share it with him because that who he is.

Maybe Val can import that hot guy from Spain who was meeting her needs until Cris got with the program. I'd be happy to see him again. :)

Sara, I love that. Imagine how grossed out she would be to discover that he could sexually compare her to her own mother?

Urban-I know, right?? I doubt they will go there, but it sure would be fun to watch.

It would also be interesting to see a Val and Sev hook up. But again, I doubt they would go there.

Sara- Blech! *shudder*

Dear Spanish Lovah: If you're not busy doing something else, could you please, pretty please come visit Santa Lucia because we really need you...I mean, uh, Val really needs you!

Although the comedy of Val realizing she's in a lust triangle with her own mother is also appealing.

No matter how this plays out (and I really hope it does play out and they don't just ignore it) I would like to make a plea...no more sex in cars!

Sev go after Valeria? He might if he feels he has a reason to stick it to Humberto, but that would carry a major risk: Humberto could figure out how to anaesthetize him long enough to relieve him of the relevant weapon.

Vivi - yeah. Totally blech. It's why I think they won't go there.

Cambiando de tema- Could Lulu be a possibility for Pato? (I think it's been discussed. I just can't remember the final ruling.)

But Humberto is spineless...he would never ever!

I can't see Sev making the first move, but if Val ever thought there was an advantage to be gained and went after him...oh yeah, Sev would go there.

Sara- That would be a nice pairing. Have they actually met yet? Lulu tends to only hang with Padre J. We also thought that Bernardita might ditch the habit and come to SL to be an option for someone. There's always an outside chance.

Urban-I guess Hum could do that, but he seems so...ineffectual and patsy-esque that I have trouble even thinking he could care. Digo...he would care, but ultimately he would waste a lot of time posturing and being offended and in the end wouldn't do anything.

I see we are on the same page IRT Hum, Kat.

Lulu and Pato? I'd have to see them together. But so far, she has done nothing to make me consider her unworthy of him.

Perhaps the ideal woman for Pato is the one with whom he has a conversation full of big words and the two of them understand each other perfectly and everyone else around them is thinking "Huh?"

I really like the Lulu character and I do love that the actress is giving it her all. I meant to say how much I agreed with you when you made that comment, Kat.

But Humberto is Valeria's father. The idea of his daughter being violated by Satanic Sev might just be what it takes for him to find his cojones.

Humberto is very "all talk, no action" but I also think he's like a volcano that's just waiting to erupt and when he does...it's going to be epic! The only thing better than Humberto unleashing all the secrets at once would be Sev losing his mind and standing out in front of the church confessing every single one of his crimes. And since that ain't gonna happen...come on Humberto!

Sara, I am loving the actress playing Lulu. Way to take a small part and make it count. If they reward that by having her character walk off into the sunset with Pato or some other sweet guy, I'd be pleased.

I am wondering about the flag/adrano connection. Is he her lover or her brother? I know that Joachim. Said that she had no relatives , but perhaps she hid her sibling because he is not exactly an upstanding joven. True confession...the guy is a hottie.

Wow! You guys are on FIRE! Yeah, Susanlynn, Adriano IS HAWT! Can't figure out the Flavia/Adriano connection either. IF they were an item once, whether little Ray is the result of that or not, it meant nothing to Adriano and he's just helping her cause. . .uh, let's see. . .even though he's a hit man he draws the line at hurting women and children?

Agree with Diva's seeing Renato as a cute polot device. Combine that with Daisy's theory of Ren killing Sev for the rape of Aldonza and his role is complete. He's got the element of crazy/mad love for Aldonza, like Cris but he can kill Sev without the stain of patricide.

If Ren does kill Sev, maybe somehow it will be self-defense so he won't have to spend his life in prison. OR, if he finally sees he will never get Aldonza, maybe it will be "suicide" at Sev's hands.

I just feel like they're setting us up for something extreme like this with Ren declaring he is going to wait for the (he thinks) inevitable break up of Cris and Donnie AND his father declaring that this position is NOT like Cris. Feels like foreshadowing of a dark end of Ren.

Val& Sev, that is a NASTY thing nightmares are made of. Someone mentioned farther up that Chris and Al Haddened consummated their marriage. That sounds like something that can be used to come between them if the wrong person gets ahold of that imfo. I'm thinking: cande, val, those two twisted sisters would work it for all its worth. And there's daddy dearest:with his twisted thinking he probably thinks that she couldn't get Him out of her mind.

The possibilities are endless. If I didn't know these tns had happy endings, I'd think those two were doomed. But all the characters will fall into place. It 'll be interesting to see how they find out "WHO SHOT LARDO". I hope lulu can fore her grandparents. I think thats→↑ her name. Thats the girl that just found out who her mom is, simoneta, that's her mother right? I'm trying to catch up.

Nina

Nina- That's Lola. Lulu is the girl who works with Padre in the church. ITA. I hope Lola can forgive her abuelos too.

Thank you vivi. I remember the girl in the church, I just never knew her name. Lookin forward to 7:00, got two hours & thirty nine minutes to go.

Nina

Wow.

I missed one heck of a weekend. Before I go home and watch tonight's episode, I'm a little confused by the fact that no one's pointed out that if they do take Lardo's prints and connect them to Aldonza's fire, then Aldonza and Cris could shoot to the top of the suspect list. Honestly, the thing that bugs me most of the PD in TNs is that they don't question anyone but the main characters. Like, how about the bartender in the bar where Lardo hangs out every other night? And why did they NEVER question Tomas or his family as to where Lardo was? So disappointing.

After today there should be a suspect. That lying val.

The funeral was full of all the usaul suspects.Cande cande cande. How self righteous she is. If looks could kill aldonza would dead. Cande was looking at her like she'd be happy if ally was in the coffin instead. Yall should be on fire with these recaps. What will padre J say.

Nina

Let's wait until Eli has the recap up before we start making comments on the action.

O thats right, you guys are on the west coast. Sorry Eli, Sara. Darn these time zones.

Nina

Thank you. Not to harp on it, but specifically, only comment on the episode covered in the recap. Don't get ahead of the recap, even if the next episode has already aired. Some of us aren't necessarily able to watch right when it airs, and we're subscribed to comments.

Ok will remember that!

Nina
