Lo Imperdonable #36 Mon 7/6/15 I'm very uncomfortable dealing with your obsession with my spouse.

This was a night devoted to the lovelorn, the lovesick, the spurned and the spiteful, and most of all, to the obsessed.

Ladies and gentleman of The Patio, I present the Claudia Show!

The good (and the not so good) folks of Mina Escondida and Pueblo Nuevo gather in El Purgatorio for the surprise they've been promised.  Heeeeeeeeeeere's Claudia, singing and wiggling and glamming up the normally dreary cantina.  And it's not a one shot deal.  Oh no.  Pierre Dussage is bankrolling her for a whole season!

Verónica and Martín realize Claudia has pulled a fast one on them. She has chosen to spend her paid vacation right here in Green Hell.   They can't exactly banish her from the town.  They can – and do – give her a talking to.  Vero warns her to stay away from Marty or she'll be forced to show her claws.  "I don't know why you're defending him," sniffs Claudia.   "You know he only married you for..."

Marty quickly cuts off Claudia before she can blurt out the word "vengeance."  He tells her HE LOVES VERO.  If Claudia forces him to choose between their friendship and his love for his wife, well, goodbye friendship.  Then he, Vero, Botel and Magdalena leave the cantina.  Ouch.  Claudia has been hit where it hurts – in her vanity.  During her next set, she even cranks out a crocodile tear or two.

Just when everything is humming along again, and the place is all smiling faces and bobbing heads and swaying hips...

...the music dies.

All eyes turn to Crescencio.  HE PULLED THE PLUG!  He is offended by the antics of the slinky bombshell in her low-cut tight dress.  He throws his old jacket over her shoulders and orders her to leave the cantina immediately and return to Mexico on the first boat of the morning.  [Check out the crowd.  Dr. F's amusement is priceless.]

Now Manuel steps in.  He amazes the crowd by REASONING with his grandfather: the miners have been working hard and they deserve a little fun; they are with their womenfolk, which means they'll behave themselves; and it's better for the fuereños to get an eyeful of Claudia than to ogle the local women.  Believe it or not, Crescencio (the Old Goat) buys the argument.  (He pointedly turns away from the stage, although we catch him sneaking more than a few peeks at the she-devil.)

Poor Emiliano.  He accepts the small room offered to him on his arrival at the French Hotel (Les Oliviers).  He doesn't balk when he learns there's nothing to eat because everyone is at the cantina and the only store in town is closed.  (Fortunately, Teo can set Emi up with a bottle of booze. )

The heat in the room is stifling.  The ceiling fan doesn't work.  The chain comes off in Emi's hand and he throws it across the room.  [Muffled giggles break out on The Patio.] Emiliano is dying to see Vero.  He takes out his gun (you know, the one that should have been confiscated at the airport).

Nicolas when he's at home
We take a small side excursion to Mexico City and see Emiliano's best friend in an unguarded moment:

Nicolas returns to his apartment and finds a lady of a certain age waiting for him in his bed.  The lady is married but separated from her rather disappointing husband.  From their conversation, we learn that he hasn't been taking her calls and that he has never introduced her to his friends.  She gives him an ultimatum: she meets the friends or it's all over.  (A pretty toothless ultimatum since he has obviously been avoiding her.)

[Wait a minute – is she his Salma Substitute?  Whoa!]

Poor Pablo.  He tried to talk man-to-man (or pipsqueak-to-ogre) with the Old Goat, but he was thrown out on his ear.  Now that Ana Perla is locked away like a princess in a fairytale, what is he to do?  He begs Teo to help him make contact with her.  Pablo will toss some pebbles at Ana Perla's window to get her attention and he'll be able to see her and talk to her.  Teo reluctantly agrees to act as lookout and warn him if Manny or the Old Goat is coming.  Alas, the plan misfires.  It is Julio who discovers Pablo and Teo lurking around the house.  And remarkably, after a little testosterone-fueled posturing, it is Julio who agrees to deliver a note to Ana Perla on Pablo's behalf.

Poor Ana Perla.  She weeps and mopes.  She prays to all her saints and deities to keep Pablo safe.  She is locked in her room.  She doesn't have wi-fi.  She's a mess.  And now Aunt Raymunda comes to tell her the cautionary tale of Great Aunt Abundia and the Wicked Fuereño who ruined things for all future fuereños in greater Mina Escondida:

Many years ago, a very bad man came to town.  Not only did he steal all the gold from the mine, he seduced and abandoned the Old Goat's sister, Great Aunt Abundia.  The poor woman suffered the taunts of the people in the pueblo.  Tragically, mother and infant died due to complications in childbirth.  The Old Goat felt guilty because he was the head of the family and he had allowed the fuereño into their lives.  From that point on, he became distrustful and embittered.  He deliberately cultivated a persona that others would respect and fear.

Ana Perla protests that unlike Abundia's fuereño, Pablo is a GOOD man.  He has done nothing wrong.  They have had no contact – she loves him from afar.  And besides, how would Raymunda feel if the Old Goat had forced her to marry another man even though she was in love with Joaquín?

Later, Ana Perla indulges in an extended, romance novel fantasy involving herself, Pablo and a horse.

The Old Goat's Breakfast Table

Raymunda reveals that she has been swayed by the story of "love from afar."  Manuel tells the Old Goat that he knows better.  Because he is so good at fomenting discord spotting problems, he's the one who should be in charge of things at home while Crescencio is in Mexico taking care of  business at the mine office.  The Old Goat agrees.

[Loud groans on The Patio.]

Claudia – Obsessive but Pragmatic

The artiste is awakened by a knock on the door.  She finds a single long-stemmed rose and a note from Pierre inviting her to breakfast.  She gets quite excited.  (Maybe she is very hungry after all that bouncing and lip-syncing.)  She thinks she has won the lottery with the Frenchie.

A bit later, as she is stepping into her bubble bath, she reflects on her great good fortune – Pierre treats her like a queen, and Marty's house is just a few steps away.  When the venganza bombshell hits the fan, she'll be there to provide solace to Martincito... and if that doesn't work out, Vive la France!

The San Telmo Hovel

Even though Marty and Vero have agreed to keep Claudia away from them, Verónica doesn't want Claudia fired, knowing, perhaps, that she is the kind of high maintenance girl who needs a steady income.  But if Claudia tries to get close to Marty, Vero will show her what a dangerous enemy she can be.  Marty is turned on by his wife's flash of anger.  The couple kiss...

In the morning, Marty is getting ready to spend the day at the mine.  Vero is going to use the time to give the hovel a good scrubbing.  Marty repeats his promise to build her a beautiful house as soon as the mine issue has been resolved.  She tells him the house can wait – the school and church come first.  [Anyway, she wanted a HORSE, not a HOUSE, bozo.]

When Vero steps out of the bedroom for a moment, Marty removes the second V pendant [I think] and a snapshot of Demetrio from the bedside table.  He remembers Nanciyaga telling him that Demetrio wants him to be happy.

Nanciyaga steals silently into the bedroom as if summoned by Marty's thoughts.  She has had another vision, a bird that augurs ill.  Marty must not go to the mine today.  She insists that something very bad is coming. The patrón has to stay home where Nanciyaga can protect him.

Vero comes back in time to hear this.  She doesn't want to insult Nanciyaga and it's not that she doesn't believe her, but she doesn't understand her.  Nanciyaga says she is just speaking the truth and telling them what she sees.  Marty isn't impressed (though we know that he SHOULD be).  He kisses Vero and leaves.

More Soap and Fewer Visions, Nanciyaga!

Well.  We've been here before.  Vero is down on hands and knees scrubbing at the bloodstain on the floor.  She is putting everything she has into the effort.  Nanciyaga says there are some things that can't be removed by washing:  "That stain will never come out."  Vero scrubs even harder.  She breaks a nail.  Nanciyaga intones:  "Broken nail, bad omen."  Vero permits herself a little snark:  "Before you go out to gather fruit, please get me some soap – more soap and fewer visions, Nanciyaga."

What a dump!

With some difficulty, Emi follows the local who has kindly offered to take him to the San Telmo home. (For my money, Emi looks every bit the ave de mal agüero.)  He stares at the place, unable to believe that Verónica actually lives there.  He walks in and sees Vero in full Cinderella mode.  She looks up.  Her schmutz-smudged face turns joyful.  She rushes to welcome him with a big, sisterly hug.

Nanciyaga gets an eyeful.

Avances: Crazy Emi confronts Marty.

NovelaMaven this is awesome. Much better than the show by a mile.

"Claudia, singing and wiggling and glamming up the normally dreary cantina"

"lady of a certain age"

"talk man-to-man (or pipsqueak-to-ogre)"

How old is Veronica anyway, 14, and Martin, hulking over Claudia with his menacing demeanor cause she is smarter than he? This is what happens when there is no trust from the get go, childish drama and tantrums. Not sexy, not endearing.

Claudia is odd but the girl got a plan and a solid plan B. Manuel could be the fly in her soup though. Quite entertaining watching him attempt chivalry.

Yep old goat, purty ain't she.

Finally Emiliano arrives. Funny he bustin up in there without knocking. Wonder what he wanted to see? Again, I hate that he's got to go royal butthurt just to make Martin look like a sweety pie in comparison but bring it Emiliano, bust those two up.

Virginia, where are you?

Why the insistence Ana Perle and Pablo be in this thing. Poor Julio, wise up brother, there is no nobility in sticking your neck out for two who don't care a smidgen.

Thanks, NovelaMaven, for a complete, concise, and comedic recap. I'm thinking I need a new beanie, but can't decide if it should be poofy and glittery in honor of Claudia or homespun and flower draped in honor of Nanciaga. Maybe I'll just construct it of smoke and mirrors to recognize Marty.

And I loved she wanted a HORSE, not a HOUSE!

The lack of comfortable accomodations shouldn't bother our anthropologist Emilio!? Surely he's done a little field research in primitive societies? Or at least traveled the world a bit?

Hoo boy! If we thought life in the mining colony wasn't difficult enough, now we have obnoxious chump Manuel in charge while Gramps goes to the city. I can't see this going well for anyone, especially our sweet ingenue couple.

@NovelaMaven - most entertaining recap of an episode that was anything but, notwithstanding (or perhaps because of) the Claudia Show. I actually think #36 was the most boring of all the episodes up to that point, but you sure livened it up. I also loved your "she wanted a HORSE, not a HOUSE" line. Classic.

NovelaMaven- This episode was a snoozer, but your recap was just the opposite. How did you make it sound so interesting?

Wow, they really are pushing Alicia M's singing career/album. I was glad that they answered my question about how she just happened to have a glitzy dress packed for the jungle. She didn't. Pierre had it made for her...which is kind of creepy.

The continuity issues with the pendant continued again. Vero had on the V pendant in the cantina, and the saints medal in the house later.

Gramps sneaking a peak at Claudia on stage was hilarious. Not so funny was him stupidly putting Manuel in charge while he's away. I just about choked on my tea when Manuel pointed out that he's been right so far, like when he warned Cresencio that there would be trouble with the Santelmos. Yeah! Because YOU stabbed the husband! How in the heck did that make sense to Cres?

What a treat to have your snappy recap with my breakfast this morning. I am halfheartedly watching this show. I have gotten a little interested now that Crazy Marty is less crazy and seems more interested in kissing than vengeance. Annddd...the guy is a good kisser. He reminds me of someone..maybe a young Liam Neesin?

Creepy Manuel seems to have taken an interest in Clawdia. ..likewise Grumpa who appears to be lusting in his heart. What is up with so much of the episode devoted to her cabaret act ? Pierre is smitten.

Medicine Woman is on my last nerve. I do not get that Very does not put a lock on the bedroom door. Watching her constantly just gliding into their bedroom is weird, especially now that Marty has become the devoted bridegroom and the honeymoon is in full swing.

As for Ana Perla and Pablo..do not care. I would opt for the bodyguard.

Finally, joven Em arrives to confront and pout and throw stuff. Also...not caring.

Thanks so much NovelaMaven for such a wonderful recap.

"He throws his old jacket over her shoulders and orders her to leave the cantina immediately and return to Mexico on the first boat of the morning."
That was so funny! What a party pooper he is. I loved it when he called Claudia "exotica".

"Check out the crowd. Dr. F's amusement is priceless."
I agree. His amusement was priceless. He really enjoyed it.

The heat in the room is stifling. The ceiling fan doesn't work. The chain comes off in Emi's hand and he throws it across the room. [Muffled giggles break out on The Patio.]
That was also very funny! Hahaha Poor Emi!

[Wait a minute – is she his Salma Substitute? Whoa!]
That took me by surprise. Wasn't expecting it. I'm keeping an eye on Nicolas.

"When the venganza bombshell hits the fan, she'll be there to provide solace to Martincito... and if that doesn't work out, Vive la France!"
LOL. It's always nice to have a Plan B I guess. Poor Pierre. If only he knew...

He walks in and sees Vero in full Cinderella mode.
That is exactly what it looked like unfortunately.

tofie: "Virginia, where are you?"

I agree. Where is she? What is she up to?

I forgot to mention that I laughed out loud when truly young Teo checked Emi in and called him "Joven". Seriously??!!! Come on writers! A kid Teo's age would be calling someone Sergio Sendel's age "Señor". Calling Pablo "Joven" makes sense for Teo. Emiliano? Not so much.

NovelaMaven- good and funny episode.
I saw most of it. I hate it when they put good shows on different chanels at the same time.
Anyhoe, is miss universe really lip syncing?
Did she sing when she was in the contest? I really don't care, I was just wondering on my keyboard.
Gramps taking a peek at the curvy one on stage, really? The old goat was probably hot stuff in his younger days, and there was a reason why he didn't turn all the way around from the bar, hee hee ;-);-);-);-);-).
Manuel being in charge is a disaster waiting to happen.
About that love story rayray told ana perla; there seems to be some under current. Who is Emi's mother, where did he come from?
Did his (Crescencio) sister really die in child birth, or did he vanquish her from the family?
He'd do something like that to protect the family name, and keep the truth away from ana perla. Man I am really reaching aren't I?
There seems to be all kinds of stories in this story. Its only a few weeks old, anything can happen.

what's the translation for "joven"?

NovelaMaven---I don't know how you do it, line after line of pure perfection.

He takes out his gun--the one that should have been confiscated at the airport. Yeah
right. You can carry loaded guns on airplanes in Mexico? Ok, this is a novela and so you have love obsessed tough guy Emi packing heat.

She thinks she won the lottery with Frenchie.

He walks in and sees her in full Cinderella mode.

She wants a horse, not a house.

NovelaM---I didn't thing last night's episode boring, I rarely think that any novela is boring although I must say that you made last nights epi sparkle.

Manuel in charge? I say time to throw the snails Nanciyaga.

Advances---Crazy Emi confronts Marty. Now who would want to miss that I ask? This is definitely---must see tv.
the gringo

Nina- Joven means young man. It's a descriptor but also used as a title of respect for a young gentleman (teens and 20s), like saying "Young Sir", versus just saying "Sir" (Señor). Of course, to someone very old, almost everyone is a joven.

Thanks for the wonderful comments, everyone! I'm glad you got a chuckle or two out of the recap. I may be suffering from a serious case of novelabrain, but I have to tell you that I really enjoyed last night's episode. It's true that nothing particularly important happened, but it was SO FUNNY, intentionally and unintentionally. Wait a sec... I see that I have some company at the Guilty Pleasures Table on The Patio – I see La Paloma, Mauricio, nina, the gringo...

As for the rest of you with your taste and standards and all, may I remind you that the full name of our meeting place is The Patio of Lowered Expectations. :D

Vivi, I have more than once been taken aback by the elasticity of the title "Joven" as used in Mexico. It wouldn't surprise me to hear a 30-something addressed this way. Poor Sergio. Because of the discrepancy between his real age and that of the character, almost every scene he plays is mined with potential absurdities. (I hope the guy has a sense of humor.)

Nina,

Did his (Crescencio) sister really die in child birth, or did he vanquish her from the family?
I guess we don't know for sure, but I'm inclined to believe she did. Apparently it happened before the Old Goat's heart had turned to stone.

As for Emi's mother, I suspect we haven't heard all there is to know of her story... or of Salma's, for that matter.

tofie,

"How old is Veronica anyway, 14,"
hahahahaha. It feels that way sometimes.

susanlynn,
I think this was just the Claudia show y punto. Now that we've got it out of the way, we can all move on. And really, the fun wasn't so much the show as the audience reaction to it. (Joaquín was totally into it – and so was his Good Ol' Girl sister, Lupita.)

Yes, the audience reactions were the best part (not so much the show -- although the singing was pretty good as was the lights and the dress brought from France).

I was surprised to see Joaquin in the crowd and with his sister Lupita and not with Raymunda. I wonder what Raymunda's reaction would have been. Would she have covered Joaquin's eyes? Probably.

It looked like Botel was really into the show too before he had to leave. Botel had this ooh la la face.

Pierre really is smitten with Claudia. Poor guy. If only he knew she's just interested in his money and not him.

I loved how Ireri was taken aback when she heard Manuel reasoning with the old goat.

I also loved how the old goat refused to look at the performance but then he sneaked a glance a or two at the performance.

I missed the "Joven" part but I agree that it is very funny. Emi is NO "Joven". He's more of a "Señor". I'm surprised Teo said it with a straight face.

Mauricio,

"Pierre really is smitten with Claudia. Poor guy. If only he knew she's just interested in his money and not him."

LOL. Well, I'm not shedding any tears for Pierre. I think it was Carlos who called him something like an "equal opportunity lecher." He still flirts with Vero even though he knows it makes Marty crazy. And when he offered Claudia his room the first time, it seemed pretty clear that he intended to be IN the room too, though he backed off soon enough.

And yeah, Botel was really getting into it.

NovelaMaven -- You're right. He goes from Vero to Claudia back to Vero (when Claudia was not in town) and then back to Claudia. Equal opportunity lecher is right.

Thanks again for the recap. It is really helpful in understanding what is being said. I am watching from the UK. I wanted to ask, the version being shown by Univision is there subtitles? The links I watch has no subtitles so the recaps help a lot! I am loving Pierre, Vero and Martin. They are my favourite.

I read online that lo imperdonable is having low ratings. Is that true? I really hope not! I really looooove it!

Duchess,

Univisión does offer optional subtitles in both Spanish and English in its televised version of Lo Imperdonable.

I think I'll let someone else address the ratings question. I don't follow those things and I wouldn't even know where to find them. I'm enjoying the novela too so I also hope that it is doing at least well enough to survive intact and in primetime.

Thanks for stopping by.

NovelaMaven, what an incredible job on the recap today. So many lines had me chuckling. Too many to list, but all your asides where a hoot. Especially the one about when Emi flung the fan chain: [Muffled giggles break out on The Patio.] I must admit, mine were a little less muffled. Sergio Sendel really likes throwing things doesn't he?!

Mauricio, I'm keeping my eye on Nicolas too. Seems that he's into "more experienced" ladies, and the glances he was throwing at Salma early on in the TN weren't for nothing! ;-)

Can't wait for tonight to see what happens with Emi in town!

Maricruz

Maricruz, it's so nice to see you back here. I'm glad you enjoyed the recap.

As for the asides, what can I say? Low hanging fruit, my friend. :-)

I'm also anxious to see what kind of trouble Emi gets into tonight (and I'm hoping that Claudia is too exhausted to be involved in the goings on!)

Yes, do keep an eye on Nicolas. His life turns out to be a bit more complicated than we thought.

Nicolas' lady friend said straight out that he likes "experienced" women, and he agreed. So Salma is right in his preferred demographic. Where will that go, though? I really can't see Salma falling into his arms any time soon. That little glimpse into Nico's love life seemed so random!

Oh yeah, Vivi, totally random. When I wrote the recap on Monday night, that's how I described the Nicolas thing. It was only in the morning that it occurred to me that it had to do with Salma – either he was in love with Salma but realized she was un amor imposible or he just liked women of Salma's age. (We had seen – and been a little creeped out by – his behavior with her earlier in the novela.)

NovelaMaven I read your clever recap and wondered if "Silk purse...Sow's ear" was coined for you. Thanks.

I understand Sabado Gigante is ending...but please. Clawdia must be dating one of the writers. Wait. Aren't the writers women? OK I'll just shut up. :-)

Aw thanks, Anon!

My best guess about Alicia Machado is that she has an AMAZING agent.

What if Emi's mother is Crescencio's sister and Jorge was the furriner who absconded with the gold (and Abundia & Emi)?

Just because Crescencio said she was dead doesn't mean she's actually dead. He could've banished her, and now she's dead to HIM.

She tracked down Jorge, he married her, things didn't work out & Jorge got custody of young Emi.

Crescencio's sister had been banished from Pueblo Nuevo and never returned.

Anon207, very interesting theory! I like it!!! ;-)

Maricruz

Anon207, Like I said above→→↑ there are stories in this story. It will be interesting to see what comes rolling out. We got a ways to go.

Thanks NovelaMaven for your response.

@Duchess - about the ratings - Lo Imperdonable is currently #1 in both the USA and Mexico. But the media in Mexico are portraying it as a ratings failure.

Alas, because it is in the primest of prime time (the 9:30pm timeslot) in Mexico, Televisa's executives expected it to get better numbers in Mexico, never mind that it's entire lineup of novelas is way down in viewership. It premiered at a respectable 21 points, but they were hoping it would go up to high 20s/low 30s. Instead, it has hovered in the 18 to 19 point range, and at one point it dipped to 15 - but so did the rest of Televisa's programming because it's soccer season.

Here in the USA, it's doing better. Univision reports its ratings in total viewer numbers. Initially this novela and Amores Con Trampa were practically tied for #1, both hovering at 2.2 million viewers. However, last week Lo Imperdonable jumped ahead by almost 20%, rising to more than 2.6 million viewers, as reported by Univision itself.
