Lo Imperdonable #50 Mon 7/27/15 Ladies' Night

Last night the women claimed the spotlight.  The men?  Mere props.  Supporting players in some cases, obstructing players in others.  Verónica, Virginia and Magdalena were geographically apart but their stories were more intertwined than ever.  Nanciyaga and Matilde were both responsible for saving a life, though Nanciyaga was a reluctant hero.  (Even lightweight Ana Perla had a sweet, if parenthetical moment.)  And the Virgin of Guadalupe was a featured guest star.

Verónica – ow! that hurts!

Nanciyaga has grudgingly worked her leafy magic; Vero awakens confused and in tremendous pain.  Why does her leg hurt so much?  And her head?  Ay ay ay, what a killer headache!  And what's that crap on her brow?  Marty tells her about the fire and how she was hurt when a beam fell on her.  She has a broken leg and a serious head injury.  It was Nanciyaga who helped bring her back to consciousness.  Dr. F couldn't tell them when – or even if – she would wake up.

At first, all Vero remembers is trying to escape from the burning hovel with Martín.  Marty hovers over her, begging for forgiveness.  "Forgiveness for what?" she asks.

She recognizes the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe that she kept in her bedroom.  She learns it was the only thing that was untouched by the fire.  A miracle?  Perhaps.  Even Dr. F, a self-described man of science, is inclined to give the Virgin props for Vero's amazing recovery.

Then Vero remembers her argument with Marty, his accusations and insults, her pain and fury.  The memory rekindles her rage.  Despite her injuries, she thrashes on the stretcher; she shouts at Marty to go away.  He is the worst thing that has ever happened to her!  All the love she felt for him has turned to hate!

And if such a thing is even possible, he makes her even angrier when he says she'll end up forgiving him just as he has forgiven her.

Before Vero's hurt brain can EXPLODE, Dr. F shoos Marty away and injects Vero with a powerful sedative.

Nanciyaga – She may be preparing her concession speech

This has been a tough night for her.  She helped Vero because Marty asked her to and because she knows that Vero isn't a mala mujer (and neither is she).  She bears witness to Marty's anguish over Vero's condition, his joy at her recovery and his despair at her rejection.  And she suffers, aware that her patrón is oblivious to her own pain.  Is she ready to accept the idea that she and Marty are not fated to be together?  (Nah.  But it's a start.)

Ana Perla – Pablo Pitches Woo while the Old Goat rests in the next room.

Joaquín engineers things so that Ana Perla and her suitor have a half-hour for chaste courtship in his living room.  Ana Perla puts the brakes on Pablo and then worries that she has offended him.  But she hasn't.  He understands and respects her innocence and doesn't want to do anything that would make her uncomfortable.

Virginia and the titos – The tita is a títere, not so the tito.

Ginny works on Tita Salma, playing into the older woman's gullibility when it comes to one prima and her visceral dislike of the other.  She repeats the story of Marty discovering Vero and Emi in bed together.  In her embroidered version, Vero is a seductress and Emi is a courtly gentleman who later swears that NOTHING HAPPENED.  But Emi is so upset that he takes to drink afterward, the single time he did so in Mina Escondida.   Ginny convinces Salma that Emi doesn't need rehab.  Why would he when he has Ginny and his ma to look after him?  The best therapy for Emi is distance from Verónica.  Now all they have to do it bring Jorge around...

The story works less well on Tito Jorge, who has recovered his faith in Verónica (about time!) and come to the conclusion that Ginny is a willful and immature girl who would not make a good life partner for his son.  Nevertheless, Jorge is willing to give Emi another chance after he returns to the family manor brandishing a lab report showing that he has NO ALCOHOL in his blood. (Emi is disappointed that Jorge doubted his word and required this proof that his son was telling him the truth.)

Ginny's face brightens when Emi says he doesn't want to hear about Vero, but it falls several notches on the smugness scale when he forbids Ginny and Salma to badmouth Verónica.  Then he tells all three to butt out of his life.  He intends to work on his prehispanic jewelry designs (his visit to Nanciyaga's community was, uh, enlightening).

La Virgen de Guadalupe – Marty reneges on his promise

In his darkest hour, Marty had struck a deal with the Morenita:  If she agreed to save Verónica, he'd accept it if Vero could not forgive him. Only now that Vero has been saved, he can't imagine a life without her.

Magdalena is torn between her feelings for Vero and her sense of duty to her daughter.  Wait a minute...

When Aldo the detective reports that Clemente will only talk to Magdalena if she comes to see him alone and if she communicates with him on a cellphone he has provided, she balks.  Absolutely not, she says.  Botel and Aldo agree – it would be foolhardy to agree to Clemente's terms.

Botel prevails on Magdalena to take one of her pills.  Once she calms down, she changes her mind.  She refuses to allow her fears to keep her from finding out about her daughter's short life.  She owes her at least that much.

Magda takes out the generic Etch-a-Sketch of her daughter and looks at it longingly.  And yet, inexplicably, her thoughts keep straying to Verónica.  She can't shake the feeling that Vero is in trouble and needs her right now.

Botel agrees to call Pierre's hotel and get news of Vero.  Before he can do so, Maggie's cellphone rings.  It's Clemente.  He is watching her and Botel.  He knows Botel's role in the story and  threatens to harm him if Maggie tries any funny stuff.

Ginny – She hasn't killed anyone.  Yet.

Ginny discovers that Jorge is revising his will.  (Matilde has just brought him a copy of the document.)  Naturally, Ginny lurks in the doorway to his office and hears him talking to his lawyer on the phone.   He making some changes, he explains.  He had been planning to leave equal shares to his three children, but now he has decided to leave the largest share to Vero.  After all, she is the only responsible one in the family.

Oh my.  What choice does Ginny have?  She has to get rid of her uncle before he can do such a thing.

Ginny searches through her dresser and finds a small vial of poison she has stashed away.  Just the ticket for getting rid of an annoying old man.

Next, she highjacks the coffee tray that Matilde is about to deliver to the tío.  She pours the entire contents of the poison vial into a single cup of coffee and then presents it to Jorge.  Jorge tastes a bit of the liquid on the spoon and doesn't notice anything is amiss.  He stands up and walks around the office as he takes a swallow from the cup... within seconds, he gasps and falls into a chair, writhing, clutching his gut.

Matilde – She saves his life.  Eventually.

Luckily for Jorge, Matilde, drawn by some forgotten errand, returns to the office and discovers him breathing what would otherwise surely be his last breaths.  Oh sure, she wastes precious seconds dithering as we on the Patio are all wringing our hands and screaming at the TV screen for her to DO SOMETHING!  After the commercial break, however, we see that she must have gotten it together because Dr. Victor Ríos, the brilliant cardiologist-psychiatrist, is now in attendance.  Jorge is going to be okay, but he really should see a specialist.  That esophagitis of his could kill him.  Oh and lay off the coffee.

Matilde will make sure that Jorge follows through.  Jorge can't stop thanking her for saving him.  He considers her one of the family.

Ginny is disappointed but not discouraged.  She's sure she'll find another opportunity to do away with the old bastard.   And  "sooner or later, all this will be mine."

Vero – Was it a nightmare or a memory?

Vero has been settled in the Botels' bed.  Dr. F's sedative has calmed her hysterics.  But her sleep is fitful and filled with troubling dreams and she calls out for her mother.

When Padre Juan comes to see her, she tells him about a memory that has only now bubbled up into her conscious mind: her drunken, abusive father tells her that her mother has abandoned him; she cowers in a chair, watching him set the house on fire.

She barely escaped with her life, Vero tells the padre.  And the sad fact is that her mother abandoned both her and her father.

She'd like to talk to him about what happened the night before, but first, she has a question: Why didn't you ever tell me that Martín and Demetrio were brothers?

Padre Juan swallows hard.  Um...

Avances:  Vero tells Martín she's going back to Mexico City, she's getting a divorce, and then she never wants to see him again.   (Déjà vu all over again?  Yeah, well.)

What a treat NovelaMaven! Thank you

"Magda takes out the generic Etch-a-Sketch of her daughter "

Virginia climbing the stairs singing her little lalala tune after poisoning Jorge, cute. At least someone other than Manuel and Martin got their bad on.

Veronica flat on her back writhing in pain and Martin still trying to restrain her and force her to forgive his misdeeds. Nasty man but guess it only fair since he so benevolently forgave her whoredom.

Botel continues to creep me out and I cannot shake it.

Hehehe, Emiliano passes a piss test, bam!

Hate that Jorge wobbled early after Virginia's smear but he never slut shamed her and despite the efforts of both Selma and Virginia Jorge is fully behind his precious girl. Yeah for Jorge so at least there are two firmly in her corner.

What a scumbag the Padre. Yeah, come on, tell her or perhaps you want to pile on with some slut shaming yourself.

thank you , Novelamaven. I was so happy to have your recap to enjoy with my coffee.

Well, here we go. The wheels keep on turning as the baddies do bad things to the good folks.

Magdalena...Despierta ! Your daughter is right there in front of you..your new bestie. Telenovelas are so frustrating. They make you talk to your TV screen.

So , Joven passed the test. Gold star. He should write a thank you note to his friend the witch doctor.

Am I wrong to want Very to end up with a reformed Dr. F? I keep seeing him as Big Sexy (aka German) from LA Mal. I am tired of looking at CrazyMarty's stricken face. Snap out of it, Marty.

Wow..Ginny ramped up the evil. Perhaps she should befriend Dr. Nancy and get herself a love potion. However, it seems that she has now given up snaring Joven and decided to kill tio for the cash and prizes. Is she now on Plan B ?

Thanks, NovelaMaven! Loved every snarky detail.

Susanlynn- I think Plan B is Plan Baby. She's going to use her baby snake to trap Emi into marriage.

Marty just doesn't get it. Can't believe he went for the I forgave you so you should forgive me argument again. He saw how well that went over last time. Well, now he knows Vero can't escape since she is immobilized with a broken foot.

Susanlynn, I was thinking the same wishing for a hook up between Dr Dan and Veronica. He did run the big bad wolf off when he heard her screaming. As Martin begrudgingly left the room he looked like a hyena just run off from his prey.

CrazyMarty...you cannot forgive someone for something that they DID NOT DO. You are not thinking clearly. Your angst is making me tired. Basta. Lighten up, hombre . WHere are the heroes with a sense of humor and snap ?

Great introductory paragraph, NovelaMaven, weaving all the female character themes together. I'm giving you an A+ on this paper, lady! You really set the stage for the rest of the episode.

Loved the headings too: especially the Tito, t
Tiítere, Tita and the shoutout to Carlos...Ginny, She Hasn't Killed Anyone Yet! Nope, but our greedy lil' gal sure is tryin'. Plus, she was rude to "la sirvienta". Always a sign that a character is bad, bad, bad, even if no one has perished yet.

Thought the setting for Veronica's nightmare was great. Presumably Mom has had many a nightmare about her daughter in that bed. Not only "La llamada de la sangre" but "la llamada de la cama". Seems like the writing staff loves parallels.

After complaining sporadically about the other characters, I found I rather missed them in this somewhat claustrophobic episode. Bring back cheesy Pierre and the equally cheesy Claudia. I'm missing the cantina too.

Thanks for a beautifully constructed, clever recap Ms. Novela. You're definitely going to ace this class.

NovelaMaven---Your last night the women claimed the spotlight opening paragraph was
the crème de la crème. I hung onto every word as it was written so well and true to last nights show. Novela, your recaps are always such a joy to read.

Tofie---I always expect some of the strongest comments to come from you. Your best line today was---He so benevolently forgave her whoredom. What a guy, right Tofie?

Susanlynn---Some good lines from you too. So, joven passed the test. Gold star. He should write a thank you note to his friend the witch doctor.---Virginia is now on plan B.

Carlos---You have lost a patient. You can keep your Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Eli Lilly prescriptions. I will settle for Dr. Nanci's smoke and magic leaves.

No Manuel last night. Wasn't that nice?

I'm surprised that no one in the novela noticed that the front door was deliberately blocked to prevent any escape from the burning house. Also someone mentioned that there was another door, side or rear entrance to the house. True or not?

The advances are for sure telling us that tonight is a must see tv night. Can't wait
the gringo

NovelaMaven, I like all the women character theme. The ladies are in termoil, all but the Vsnake. I guess they are going to let her take
The next step off the cliff, and murder somebody.
The only person In this family that seems to be pullin their head out of the toilet, and supporting veronica, might die at the hand of
This heffa.
Marty, stupid stupid stupid stupid foolish foolish stupid stupid Marty, that should have been the name on his birth certificate.
"You'll end up forgiveing me, just as I have forgiven you", REALLY? SERIOUSLY? REALLY?
Everybody else on the show last night, whatever.

Pardon the intrusion. If it hasn't happened yet, it's best to err on the side of caution and not mention it. The edited comment follows:

Great recap, thanks so much. My only problem with the doc and Vero pairing is that I do not want Vero to get Virgy's dirty, sloppy seconds, yuck! I want a really good guy for her. Poor tio, I am afraid Virgy will succeed one of these days. I can not wait for tia to get hers too but I want her alive to see her pet snake swallowing her for snack. [Redacted] Is this a spoiler? Ojala, it is not.
Romy

"The men? Mere props."

"...ow! that hurts!"

Forgive me, I thought those two lines begged to be connected.

Thanks for such perfection, NovelaMaven. Words are your willing minions.

"The tita is a títere, not so the tito."

I just can't get enough of such stuff. And then there's:

"Ginny – She hasn't killed anyone. Yet."

Something that I'd be proud to say... oh wait... I think I did.

Heck, you already know how much I admire your work.

I hope everyone is able to cut Ginny a little slack here. After all, it was an act of self-preservation. I especially liked the way she shrugged off the lack of success... "Ginny is disappointed but not discouraged." You gotta love her positive attitude. What a contrast to Martín's incessant negativity.

Carlos

Dear tofie, susanlynn, Vivi, JudyB, gringo, Nina, Romy and Carlos,

Thanks so much for the kind words and for sharing your take on the show. And special thanks to Carlos for letting me steal one of his favorite lines.

¡Hasta la próxima!

gringo,

"Carlos---You have lost a patient."

and I completely understand. If you will recall, I pointed out early on that many here were severely underestimating the mysterious and exotic Dr. Nanciyaga. Just allow me to share something that was imparted to me by my wise professors in medical school:

"Even if you do nothing at all, many sick or injured people will heal, so importantly, First do no harm."

Maybe all Verónica needed was a little time. And how could a few leaves pasted to her forehead have hurt anything?

Carlos

My well written comment just disappeared. Grrr!

Thanks to NovelaMaven for the excellently awesome recap. Sorry I am late, now I am out of time to re-write my comment. Grrr...

Hasta pronto.

Thanks so much for the recap NovelaMaven.
I don't understand why Emi is cast as a protagonist, he hasn't really done anything wrong (apart from insulting Vero at the party). Maybe he might do something bad in future, but so far he has been defending Vero. If he was wicked, he would have lied to Martin and said something happened between him and Vero. I hope he finds someone that truly loves him.

Opps I meant cast as an antagonist.
