Weekend Discussion: Your Favorite Classic Novelas

How long are you watching novelas?  What are your favorite classic ones?  What do you love most about them?  Would you like to have a Classic Novela Channel?

I deeply miss good novelas de epoca.  Those had style, substance, great performances, and great cinematography.  While sometimes the costumes and hair were completely wrong (the men of Alborada all should have had shorter hair and Regency-period clothing, for example) the general look of the series was always like something out of a romance novel.  Corazon Salvaje (1993) was my second novela and it felt like such a book coming to life.  Hombres de Honor (2005) -- despite being studio- and backlot-bound -- is meticulously correct in costume, coiffure, and props, down to period telephones, china, and glassware.  I wish someone would show it again.

Yo Compro Esa Mujer (1991) had such a great story with great characters and performances that it made a star of Eduardo Yanez.  The original El Clon (2001) didn't need to be remade; the remake wasn't different enough to justify it and made no improvement in terms of photography.  The original also had better music.

Finally, I do have to get back to watching Cuna de Lobos (1986).  Televisa made a huge mistake trying to remake this one because it was already perfect.  Nobody could follow Maria Rubio into the role of Catalina.

Have at it, amigos!

Hands down. Cuna de Lobos.

(I posted a link on the Que nos cuenta Thread, but Televisa does have a novela de época in the works. It's a Mexican version of the Spanish Gran Hotel.)

For me Corazon Salvaje (1993). Oh. My. Gosh! Love, love, LOVED it! Wasn't watching novelas in 93 but watched it on YT not too long ago. LOVE it! I missed all those others and would so watch a classic novela channel. Cable is killing us, though, and I don't see adding the Spanish language package. I haven't searched hulu, Netflix or Amazon Prime for a while to see what all they have. I do watch missed episodes of my current novela on hulu and they have this horrid thing called novela express which are condensed versions of some older novelas. Bah! I want the whole enchilada! Hopefully, Maybe I can get some leads on this discussion. Thanks, Urban!

Thanks Urban. I dread the fact that I have not watched much of the epoca novelas consistantly but I did catch up glimpses of Zorro Espada Y Rosa( Note that back then I was not an avid watcher of novelas, I just catched them on TV occasionally) . Hector Suarez Gomiz was terrific there! It also contains very wicked anvils.

I have not watched much of Cuna but even after seeing the first few episodes, I could see a very dark and malevolent aura streaming out of Maria Rubio!

I have previously mentioned Latele Novela Network which now appears to have disappeared from the line-up. That's where I saw the Argentine one I posted. It had novelas 24/7; 3 airings per episode. It also had the original Mujeres Asesinas. We need more channels like that one.

I don't like condensed versions, either. I have the DVD to CS '93 and it's not well-done. I would strongly recommend to Televisa and the other networks that if they want to do something like that they should just do movie script versions of the stories and do a 3-hour movie at the same time. No additional production expenses other than the hourly pay of the cast and crew. Then there would be a DVD that makes sense.

Oh, my first telenovela and still favorite is Alborada starring Fernando Colunga and Lucero. I was surfing the channels and stopped when I saw tall, dark, and handsome Don Luis . When Placido Dominga started to sing the theme song ..game on. My second favorite is Amor Real starring Fernando and Adele Noriego. My third favorite is Pasion with Fernando and Susana Gonzalos and....PIRRRATES...swashing their buckles and buckling their swashes. Ahoy. Whatta man , whatta man, whatta mighty fine man. I love the historical novelas, and we have not seen one lately.

I have been watching telenovelas for eight years. I have never seen Cuno , and I never heard of the one with Ed Yanez's, but I love Big Ed! I never saw the original CS, but I saw the second starring Big Ed , and I liked it.

1) Corazón Salvaje 1993 -- Perfect Novela
2) Amor Real
3) Pasión
4) Alborada

¿Please does anyone know where to watch the complete version of "Yo Compro Esa Mujer?

I'm dying to watch it.

Countx: "Zorro, La Espada y La Rosa" is actually very good IMO. There is a whole blog dedicated to it and years later there is a cult following on the Internet.

I haven't found any Spanish-language eps of YCEM anywhere. YT has some of the Italian-dubbed ones, but not the whole series. I really loved that one; saw it on Galavision in 1996.

Now if only Televisa did a Zorro novela. Since it's a Mexican story it seems right.

UA...So..Who would you cast as Zorro ? Fernando would have been perfect , but perhaps now we would need a slightly younger galan to climb those roofs and leap into the saddle. How about Marcelo Cordoba ?

I would like the epocas to stay epocas, Amor Real had a remake already and it turned out to be a writing disaster ( LQVR). But in my opinion love to see something made about the French Revolution. A brand new epoca would be great.

Has anyone watched La Pola? I had it on TV for a while but my lazy self ignored it completely. It aired on RCN.

How are we defining classic? In the period novelas Pasión makes my list. I did watch it when it aired and LOVED it! It would be my second.

I think "classic" can mean 10 or more years ago.

Marcelo Cordoba would make a good Zorro, but so would Diego Olivera. I would have nominated Jorge Salinas 10 years ago but he might be a bit past it now. Too bad. And he was never in a novela de epoca, so I wonder why. I'm still fantasizing about him as a hard-boiled detective in a noir-style one.

I think Alborada is the only novela de epoca that I've seen, but I agree it was AWWE-SOME! I think I saw most of the full run, but I also watched the condensed version. Twice. And I hate condensed novelas.

I never saw Corazon Salvaje. I started watching the remake, but it was a joke from the very beginning. All I remember now are those horrible, horrible wigs on the little girls. Oh good Lord, it was terrible.

There are a couple of TNs I really enjoyed that I don't think were very popular, but they weren't de epoca.

There were others I liked back then. My first one starred Julietta Rosen and was called Madres Egoistas. Maria del Sol was the villana, the heroine's ama de llaves who had once been her nanny. The male villain was played by Alberto Mayagoitia as the villana's son. This was a fairly twisted story and I think it ran 90 episodes, which was normal for 1991. It was much better than the shorter one that replaced it.

Amor Real was my first novela, before I found about Caray. Little tough following everything but totally worth it. I been hooked since, but it set the bar pretty high.

But then there was La Espada y La Rosa. Loved that one! It was a great combination of excellent acting and the most ridiculous plot points. (Gypsy queen! Amazon women!) Fabulous.

I forgot to add "La Traición". It was really entertaining. The best part for me was watching MarioC race after DannaG in the rain down the mansion steps then pick her up, and twirl her around and around in a tight, manly embrace with rain pouring down their bodies! !!. Funny, but this scene was never shown during the novela, just at commercial breaks!!

As Kelly wrote, Amor Real (and Alborada) set the standard pretty high.

#1 Amor real, it had everything including some of the sexiest scenes, EVER.

# 2 Alborada, do you see a trend here, FC!!

# 3 Pasion, more FC

# 4 Corazón Salvaje 1993, the recent one with Yanez was mierda

I didn't see Cuna de Lobos & the remake was supposed to be made by Salvador Mejia, need I say more? Haven't heard anything about that lately, thankfully.

Where is Marcelo Cordoba, I miss him.
FC is going to be the Antagonist in Pasion y poder, can't wait, he does angry so well, adorable all the while. Hope the botox has worn off, I want to see that beautiful face, natural with wrinkles.

I'm really mad at myself that I missed La Traicion. I really loved MarioC and DannaG in Pasion de Gavilanes (which had some really silly points, especially toward the end), but was also really very nice.

Hellashelle
I watched "LT" on Youtube, my favorite channel

Esmeralda, mid-90's, La Usupadora late 90's, and later on I started favoring the "humorous ones: Juan Querendon, La Fea Mas Bella, Una Familia Con Suerte, etc... maybe those are not considered truly "classics" Interesting to see what's being posted here.

The two that I've always wanted to discuss, but didn't have Caray around to discuss them on were Entre El Amor y El Odio and, the big one, Mi Destino Eres Tu. Any of you watch those?

Amazing but I didn't realize Gaby Spanic had such a tremendous singing voice and sang the entrance song to LU of the same name.

Hellashelle,
"Mi Destino Eres Tu," another great Carla Estrada novela with Jorge Salinas and Jamie Camil. JC plays a very interesting character. Definitely not a época but worth watching. Lucero does a great job here also.

Victoria - Well Gaby Spanic has a pretty impressive smoker's voice. I didn't see LU, but I wouldn't expect her to be a huge singer anyway. Then again, she's an actress. That usually means singer/dancer/fragerance financier at some point too.

But seriously: I LOVED Mi Destino Eres Tu. What I wouldn't give for a spotlight discussion on that TN. It was way ahead of its time.

Victoria: The theme of La Usurpadora was sung by Pandora, this is Spanic's voice:

Thumbs up for Corazon Salvaje 1993. Great acting, protas with smoking chemistry and a galan, played by Eduardo Palomo, who is not a moron, wishy-washy or sleeping with every woman while the prota remains immaculate. Once he set eyes on Monica, Juan was inconditional with her. Every galan at Televisa's acting school needs to watch his performance in CS.

Cuna de Lobos is dark but great. I loved Mario Rubio's dark sense of humor in that one.

I always have a soft spot for Alondra and Corazón Salvaje 93 is certainly one of the best. I also enjoyed the historical telenovelas like El Vuelo del Aguila and La Antorcha Encendida.

From Colombia I enjoyed Las Aguas Mansas, the original version from Pasión de Gavilanes and Fuego en la Sangre, which is set in Bogotá in the 40's and has a bit of a noir style.

And I don't know if this counts as classic but as a kid I loved Baila Conmigo, which was a musical telenovela set in Mexico City in the 1960's. My mom even bought the cassette. It reminded me of the old musical romance films with Angélica María.

Put me down for one more vote for Zorro if we're talking novelas de epoca

I also enjoyed la Usurpadora - it was the first novela I watched where I understood more than half the Spanish so maybe that's why

Jarocha.
Thank you so much for the correction. At first I didn't think it sounded like her, but then she was given credit. I wasn't able to watch the video, freaking blocked here in good ole southern North Carolina.
But I did like "Un tal Guadalupe".
I appreciate your input.

Put me down for "Amor Real." Mauricio Islas and Ernesto La Guardia were fantastic in interesting roles.

"Alondra" was compelling, and I think Ernesto L. was in that one too.

I keep reading that Carla Estrada will take a break from "Hoy" in 2016 to produce another telenovela. (THIS IS PROBABLY UNTRUE but I don't know how to verify it) But the subject is unknown at this time.

Urban/Diva/etc, you guys should have a straight line of communication (that is read) to Carla Estrada / Univision! !!

Dios, I wish I did! Then maybe we'd not only get a Zorro novela but my long-term dream of one based on Dark Shadows.

I'll take a modern day TN from her too. Lucero's character in MDET was one of the smartest, most capable and earnest heroines I've ever seen. The plot was well-paced, rich, smart and realistic with pretty fully developed side characters and relationships. I'm not surprised that Lucero and Carla Estrada followed up with the wonderful Alborada. I think they were a great combination. I just wish more people had appreciated the first TN.

PS: I also really liked Gitanas (Telelmundo). I fell off watching towards the end though. It was the first really, really different TN I ever saw and it was so sumptuous! Did anyone else watch it?

Lucero-Carla Estrada is a fantastic combination:

Cuando Llega el Amor
Los Parientes Pobres
Lazos de Amor
Mi Destino Eres Tú
Alborada

Hellashelle: I watched part of Gitanas because it was on here at noon. I had watched Capadocia before (a Mexican dramatic series) so it was interesting seeing Dolores Heredia and Ana de la Reguera as mother and daughter after seeing them in one of the rawest tv shows about jail, playing the main characters there: the prison director and the newest inmate in the first episode (who's imprisoned for an accident she wasn't guilty of but ends the first season committing the murder of her bully in jail).

I also saw Gitanas and loved it. However, I thought that they could have cast better-looking babies at the end for those photos.

I didn't see the end, so I'm not sure about baby photos, but Ana de la Ruega and Manolo Cardona were beautiful so ugly babies must've been just a ridiculous call.

I really liked how Gitanas brought in another, more "exotic" culture and gave a fresh look at the tired TN standbys of "have-have nots", "rich vs. poor", "old money vs. new blood". The town, the set up, it all felt more believable than the usual big city setting when these plot points were introduced. Good stuff.

Ana de la Reguera was also in this telenovela from Azteca that I really liked called "Todo por Amor". It's one of the few I've seen where the galán is the villain, and not villanous like in La Mentira and its remakes where we are supposed to forgive him later, the galán there was a murderer and a criminal but he loved de la Reguera's character SO MUCH and treated her so well (better than supposedly good galanes in other novelas) that it was very compelling to watch their romance blossom even if you knew that a man like him wasn't good for anyone. He ended up destroying people around her and of course there was no happy ending but at times viewers wished there had been.

My #1 is definitely Corazon Salvaje 1993. The performances were sublime. Eduardo Palomo had the character down and this TN made him a star.

I've been watching them on and off since I was a child so a few notables in my memory:

Los Ricos Tambien Lloran
Cristina Bazan
Bodas de Odio
Amor Real
Alborada
Los Plateados
Gitanas
Alcanzar una Estrella I and II
Ramona
Alguna Vez Tendremos Alas
La Usurpadora
Vanessa
Colorina
Quinceañera
Rosa Salvaje
Topazio
La Esclava Isaura
Pasion

Oh wow! What perfect timing for this post!
