Chapter 40:
Puppetmasters
Isela told
Ho-sefa to forget the revenge. Claudio had terminated their
relationship and her employment. He was going back to his wife and
suggested that she marry Orlando. Ho-sefa couldn't believe her
daughter would do this to her. Isela said she loved her but could
not do what she demanded. She was going to marry Orlando because she
loved him and wanted him to be the first man in her life. She should
have said that ages ago. But Ho-sefa said she would take care of
things. Isela realized that meant trouble.
However, when
Orlando saw her later outside the civil registry office she ran away
and got into a cab.
Jenny and Julian
talked about Fermin. She hadn't been aware that he knew that Fermin
was his father. She told him he had gotten a job as a janitor and
wanted to be left alone.
Honoria and Padre
Juan talked about her having kept Julian's paternity a secret from
him. No surprise that the padre thought this was wrong. The secret
was a prison and nobody should have been in it. He told her that
Fermin was going to refurbish the statues from the church to make
them look like new. Honoria realized that those were the ones
Ho-sefa destroyed.
Maleny remembered
her most recent argument with Ari. Then she argued with Mama Bear
about Max. Claudio said he would help Maleny recover Max but had
done nothing. Maleny told her that Max was now involved with “that
seamstress”. Mama Bear said she and Daniel had plans to separate
them, but Maleny didn't want to get involved, saying they would only
make things worse. She got back into her car and drove off.
Mama Bear and
Danny-Boy talked about using Jacinto to entrap Maria Dolores. Mama
Bear didn't see how this would help. Danny-Boy wanted to impregnate
Maraia Dolres but Mama Bear knew his chances weren't great anymore.
She said “Well, if you can't do it, Max will.” Danny-Boy didn't
like this.
Gerry tried
talking Ivana out of marrying Danny-Boy. He failed. She told him
she intended to punish both Danny-Boy and Maria Dolores. Danny-Boy
had told her that Maria Dolores was only getting involved with Max to
throw it in his face. She intended to help her with that. Gerry
asked about the lawsuit. That was for later, he was told.
Max was in
Julian's office. He tried to convince Julian that he should look for
Fermin. He said he should convince him to recover with his family.
Julian asked him whether Maria Dolores had told him that Fermin was
his father. Max confirmed she had. He talked about how Julian and
his mother could help. Julian told Max that Fermin had given him
hope that he would have a chance with Maria Dolores. Max started to
say something when the secretary came in. She told him Ivana was on
the phone and that it was urgent.
Maleny was
desperate. She went to the Bustamante mansion to beg Alma to cancel
the dinner party. She didn't want to be ground into the dust when
Max presented Maria Dolores as his new main squeeze. Daniel had told
her. Alma didn't believe it until Maleny became hysterical. Maleny
was sure that Max would make an official announcement that evening.
Isela saw Ho-sefa
near the police station. Ho-sefa threatened to file charges against
Claudio.
Alma told Maleny
she couldn't cancel dinner. Alma told her she and Claudio were
together with the plan. Maleny's hysteria at the prospect of losing
Max got worse. Alma told her she would never accept Maria Dolores.
More fool her.
Ho-sefa told
Isela she intended to destroy Claudio as he had destroyed her family.
She would leave Claudio without work or position. Isela begged her
not to because she had shagged Claudio in the cabana. Ho-sefa went
on about the death of her other daughter. Isela demanded to know why
she was interfering in her plans to marry Orlando. Ho-sefa's excuse
was that she wasn't going to have him take her away. She dragged her
into the police station.
Julian went home.
Honoria showed him an old photograph. It was of himself as a child
being held by Fermin. He told her he knew where Fermin was.
Max met Maria
Dolores and Doris at the tailor shop as they arrived in a cab. They
took out two large boxes. He brought them up to date on Julian.
Doris showed off a new mannequin and talked about the other things
they would be getting for their business. The business Danny-Boy
intended to destroy.
Claudio arrived
at the police station and saw Ho-sefa and Isela. Ho-sefa went on
about “I trusted you” the natural anguish of a mother at the
rape of her daughter. Claudio said he had no time to listen to her.
He had a family event to attend. Ho-sefa walked out and Claudio
grabbed Isela back. He demanded to know why she didn't tell him
about this. Isela told Claudio that her mother was about to accuse
him of the crime. He stared for one cold second. He had no idea
what a snake pit he was in.
The Morales women
were dressing for dinner.
Isela told
Claudio that Ho-sefa thought the worst the night she came home late.
She said she explained that to her and this was a mistake. Claudio
said this was criminal. “You can fix this, can't you?” she asked
in that stupid-and-helpless little girl tone that mostly dumb men
fall for.
“And what
happens to my marriage? My prestige if anyone finds out?” he
asked. He finally said “I'll try to settle this, but if I can't
your mother will face the consequences.” Which would be better for
all concerned.
Max paced in the
courtyard as he talked on his cell. He assured Alma that nothing was
going to happen. Ho-sefa walked past him, watching. She was also
eavesdropping.
Maria Dolores
finished dressing and went outside to meet Max. He told her his
mother was a bit nervous. She told him that Clara was, too. Ho-sefa
watched them and eavesdropped. They held hands and kissed. Ho-sefa
gloated as she flew into her apartment. She called Honoria to tell
her to go outside and look toute suite. “Your poor son
should see this.” Julian was sitting at the table when his mother
took the call. He saw her look out the window and freeze. He knew
something was wrong.
Max and Maria
Dolores went up to her apartment door. Honoria stepped away from the
window and ended Ho-sefa's poison call. Julian went outside just in
time to get his heart broken. Honoria followed him. Maria Dolores
saw them. She and Julian seemed to share a thousand-yard stare. She
tried to say something to him but her mother and sister came out.
They knew something bad had happened. Ho-sefa gloated at Honoria.
“I told you so,” she said with her usual venom. “I said she
would break his heart and that's just what happened now. He saw her
with this here lawyer.” Max told her he won't allow her to talk
that way about Maria Dolores. “I'll say whatever I want to because
I always speak the truth. She's a goddamned filthy old bat.”
[maldita mustia]. Honoria told her to shut her trap. Julian cried
and told Maria Dolores he didn't want to talk, just to go.
Max and the
Morales women left in silence. They ignored Ho-sefa, who wouldn't
shut her sewer mouth. Honoria went after her. Ho-sefa then said
that Julian was less than a man. Honoria slapped her hard enough to
almost knock her down. Good shot; too bad it wasn't fatal.
Julian went
inside and started collapsed to his knees. He cried. Honoria held
him. She slowly collapsed onto the floor to hold him across her lap.
Almost like in Michaelangelo's famous statue.
Max suggested to
the Morales ladies that he call his mother to say they would be a
little late. He wanted to given them a little time to calm down.
Maria Dolores was afraid that Julian would never speak to her again.
Max suggested that Julian might not want to talk to anyone at the
moment.
Isela saw Orlando
talking to someone about selling his business. She told him to
forget her. He stopped her and said he was keeping his word to Alma.
He would pay all of Leo's medical bills and she would not have him
arrested for causing Leo's accident.
Alma was
reluctantly getting ready for the dinner party from hell. Her phone
rang. Isela told her that they had to talk because of what Orlando
was doing. Alma said she couldn't at the moment. They would talk
later but Isela was not to say anything to anyone, especially
Claudio.
Max and the
ladies arrived. Leo presented flowers to all of them. Claudio
arrived. He suggested that Max get the drinks while he fetched Alma.
Alma was arguing with Maleny on the phone. She was refusing to do
something behind her husband's back. They talked about Orlando
selling his business. Alma said she couldn't leave the house because
Max and the others would be there any minute. Claudio walked in and
she ended the call. She looked both relieved and nervous. Claudio
told her that Clara and her family had arrived.
Isela went home.
Ho-sefa said she'd settle things with Claudio. “You saw what I'm
capable of, huh?” she said. She threatened to reveal the secret
that Isela and Claudio were lovers. “Imagine the headlines:
Mother in prison for filing rape charges against prestigious judge
when they really were lovers.” Isela replied “I'm not sure if
that's better or worse.” Ho-sefa said “Bustamante must know he's
in a real mess,” then displayed that she didn't give a damn.
Ari was too close
to the pit by joining Maleny. He couldn't help living so close to
Orlando. She said she would take care of that. He talked about
Orlando and Isela getting married, but that after this they'd be out
in the street. Maleny only laughed. “You've got it all wrong. A
slut like Isela is looking much higher than marrying a mere
mechanic,” she said. “She's shagging her boss.” Ari didn't
look like he bought it.
Max was pouring
wine. Esperanza said “Not for Clarita; she's too young.” Alma
agreed, saying the same about Leo. She then said that if they didn't
like the food being served she'd order something else for them.
Esperanza said not to worry about it (although she should have been
worried about the intent of this comment). Claudio toasted the
occasion.
Honoria found
Fermin in a schoolyard basketball court. She went after him for
causing Julian to suffer over Maria Dolores. She yelled at him to
get out of their lives and leave them in peace.
Esperanza said
she was a little worried when Clarita told them that she and Leo were
dating, especially after the disaster of Daniel and Maria Dolores.
This was almost too much after Rudolfo's death. “But don't we all
worry about our children?” Alma asked. She saw how awkward Max and
Maria Dolores were at hearing this conversation. The maid came in to
announce that dinner was served.
Susanna asked
Ivana how Danny-Boy was doing back to the office while she was at
home resting. Ivana told her that she was back there herself in her
rightful place. Susanna said something about talking to various
people about real estate and Ivana explained that she was having
Arango look into some apartments at a good price. “Something
suitable for a woman your age on an allowance.” Susanna then got
the idea that Ivana was going to kick her out of the mansion. Ivana
said “No, but since you don't like children and Daniel and I plan
to have many it would be better if you lived elsewhere.”
She hung up and
turned to the woman sitting on the opposite side of the desk.
“Everything's ready.” “Do you want me to call your
mother-in-law?” Ivana said she would speak to her. The woman said
that if she heard from the aunt she would call. Then she left.
Gerry was confounded at the idea of Mama Bear moving into the
mansion. Ivana said “They planned the engagement and wedding only
to strip me of my assets. But I will put them out on the street.”
Gerry looked like he saw a ghost.
Susanna called
Mama Bear. She told her she was being kicked out without an
apartment to move to and “You have to do something or I will tell
the whole truth!” Mama Bear hung up in shock.
Honoria got on
Fermin's case. He started to apologize when Julian came in. Jenny
was watching from outside the window.
Claudio talked
about giving his sons trips when they finished school. Esperanza
talked about allowing her daughters to study what they wished. Maria
Dolores mentioned her plan to start a website for selling dresses.
Clara talked about studying to become a teacher. Alma didn't look
impressed.
Julian apologized
to his parents for not being the futbol player his father wanted.
Honoria told him to stop. He then told his parents he wasn't going
to pursue Maria Dolores anymore. “Because Max isn't like Daniel.
He's a good man and he can everything she needs that I can't give
her.” Honoria cried. So did Jenny.
Ari and Orlando
were talking about the apartment, but Ari kept looking around.
Orlando knew that something was up and then – just as Maleny
planned – Ari told him that Isela was boinking her boss.
The Bustamantes
and Moraleses sat down in the parlor. Alma mentioned coffee and Max
announced that he and Maria Dolores were involved. Claudio and Alma
stood. He said, “I'm glad you told us, but we don't approve.”
