Antes muerta que Lichita #37 Wednesday 11/11/15

Well, here we go. We start with Alicia telling us that to be unique and authentic one needs to take the risk of making decisions that could change one's life forever. . .

The first real scene is loser Magos with her loser friends Gerry and Paula. She is telling them she really doesn't know who Ximena's father is. At the time she got pregnant she was cheating on her steady El Chanclas with a "Luis somebody" who never called her after the sex. So, she will just tell Magos that her father is El Chanclas. The three losers decide to have some "chelas" (beers).

In the meantime, Alicia is on the phone with her mom telling her she will be working late. Alicia hears that Magos is out with her buds and hopes she does not get into trouble.

Back with the trio of losers: they are pounding back the beers. They talk about being lucky and Gerry brings up how lucky Magos was after vandalizing the car of the supermarket manager and getting away with it. They drink to continued good luck.

The same night, Beatriz is driving Augusto crazy in bed with her overwrought concern that Alex is not home yet. Augusto cannot be bothered: Alex is a full grown man. She has a hunch that something bad has happened to her son. She tells him to go to sleep and she will pray for their son alone.

Alicia gets a phone call at work. The next thing we know is she is getting out of a taxi. A naked Alex trying to hide behind a tree awaits her. It turns out that he got assaulted (he admits it wasn't too bad)( guess they took his clothes) Alicia has brought him clothes from the costume department at work. At least they were decent enough not to take his cell phone. He just wants to go home. He apologizes for calling her but the was nobody else he could call. Alicia promises she will not tell anyone about his misadventure.

A very drunk Magos arrives home and tries to get into her bunk under a very awake Ximena in her bunk. She decides she is going to tell her more or less about her father. She start several times with a "Once upon a time. . ." intro with calling herself the "princess" and some "zapato" (shoe) guy (El Chanclas)(Chanclas=flip flop slippers)begging her for something (we probably don't want to know what) but cannot finish. Ximena ends up being the adult and covering her up. Magos says goodnight and damns herself.

Back with Alicia and Alex, they are walking to his house through the  garage and she is trying to get him to go to the hospital to get checked out after the beating he took. He is just embarrassed about it all and apologizes for not being fair to her. He has no idea what he will tell his parents when the light goes on and Beatriz appears in the garage. She is ready to yell at them for being out all night until she sees how badly her son has been beaten.

In Augusto and Beatriz's living room, Alex is having to explain what happened to him to Beatriz. The story is they were together when they were followed and attacked. Alex suffered the abuse and they took everything except his cell phone. Beatriz thinks they were in an unsavory area because they were coming back from sinning(having sex). She is mortified! Augusto and Valeriana arrive. Alicia excuses herself and leaves. Augusto asks Alex who beat him up. Rather than answer, Alex starts groaning. Augusto has a cold and distant look in his eyes. As the others fuss over Alex, Augusto makes a call.

It is the next day at Icónika and Alicia is dead tired. She is chatting with Magos telling her she is still not done with some of the details of her presentation for Sandra. Magos has given her a change of clothes from her inventory. Unfortunately she has not had time to change yet and Néstor has to stop on by to tell her that she has one the same clothes as yesterday and ask her if she had tequila for breakfast.

At the Vidal household, Ángel is talking with his Mateo obsessed wife Marta about going to court to adopt Mateo if they do not hear anything from Licenciado Duarte. He asks if she knows something she is not telling him. She says no. Her face says yes. He looks worried.

Next day at Augusto's house: it turns out that Alex did go to the hospital and besides the black eye and other bruises, he has a cracked rib. The whole family is around him. Luciana is still not clear on what exactly happened and tries to press the issue but is removed by her mother Valeriana.

Valeriana tries to explain to Luciana that Alex and his novia Alicia were getting intimate when they were attacked that is why she didn't want Luciana asking and making it more embarrassing. Most people are not as liberal as they (Valeriana and Luciana) are; they are a little old fashioned.

Looks like Brisas is going to be out of a place to live again due to being (as Braulio put it) a lethal threat to the old people. She decides to go with the flow if that is the case. Later she tells Braulio after one last night at the pension, she will be living again at Icónika.

Roberto runs into Luciana in the hall who asks if he is going to go to the meeting with Sandra where Lichita (he corrects her that her name is Alicia but due to the censor bleeping Luciana must call her something even worse)is doing her presentations. Luciana says she does not know how Alicia is going to do it since she was in bed with Alex all night long. She must be a nymphomaniac. A skulking Néstor hears it all.

The meeting in the board room is about to start with Alicia's presentation on Oki Oki when Sandra decides that other campaigns with new clients are more pressing since the Oki Oki owners won't be in town yet for a few days. She tells Alicia to look everything over one more time. They all leave.

Dafne is talking to the recuperating Alex. Seems that she is going to a new high school next week and is all nervous. The maid and Beatriz bring him a meal in bed. They talk and laugh about how Dafne always thought the food on her brother's plate tasted better than her own. Valeriana stops by to take a photo of all three on Alex's  bed.

Back in the board room it is just Roberto and Alicia where he is critiquing her work. He throws it in her face that the only thing that really matters to her these days is Alex. She corrects him saying they were talking about her work not her "novio". He gets really sarcastic then saying he never thought it would be so easy for her to be with another man so soon when he was the only man in her life. He suddenly apologizes saying she must have fallen in love again. They almost go in for a kiss when Elías comes in. Alicia grabs her stuff, falls and leaves.

Back in Alex's room, Beatriz is asking Dafne to leave so Alex can rest. Augusto comes in and  both Dafne and Beatriz go to hug him. Valeriana arrives. In the midst of all this, Alex gets a mysterious text message telling him that the sender has a photo that could be of real interest to his family. He then sees the photo and looks physically ill. The whole family notices a change in his demeanor and want to know what is wrong.

At Gumaro and Roberto's apartment, Roberto is talking with his lawyer and asking him if the Vidal's have any real chance of adopting Mateo. The lawyer says unfortunately the law always has holes where one can get through but tells Roberto to calm down because he will handle it. All Roberto wants to do is comply with Venus' demands, resign at Icónika and go live with his son at the beach. Gumaro asks what about Alicia. Roberto says he is going to have to make her matter the least.

At Icónika, Alicia is going over her presentation for Marcelo's hair products with Marcelo himself who really likes her idea. Her slogan for the campaign is "Digno de una diosa" (worthy of a goddess/goddess worthy). Marcelo knows who his first model for the videos he is going to be doing for the campaign is going to be but does not say. (Can we guess?)

Back at Augusto's, Dafne says Alex must look like he does because he got an XXX message from Alicia. That upsets Beatriz.

At work Chuchette tells Alicia that the magazine interviewer wants to interview her family tomorrow and she Chuchette agreed. Alicia says that is fine. Chuchette goes on with a string of disparaging remarks. Alicia has news for Chuchette, though: from now on she will be addressing her with the informal you form "tú". Chuchette cannot believe how rebellious she is being from a lower class and all. Alicia wonders to herself and us if Chuchette understood or maybe she would have preferred being called Jesusa. Alicia just smiles.

At the Gutiérrez household, it is supper time and Alicia is telling them all about the interview. Nacho is enjoying her success as well as Ximena. Alicia is clear in reminding them the only reason she or they are being interviewed is because she is Alex's girlfriend. Nacho is just happy she will be famous. Next it will be Ximena's turn. Magos asks: what about her?

Marta is visiting Mateo in the orphanage just before bed time and is very affectionate with him. After she leaves he tells one of his pals how great it would to have her for a mother. His pal agrees.

Magos is all excited about them all being famous. Alicia says they should all be like they always are. She is proud of her family as it is. Ximena wants to know if they are going to ask her about her father.

Back at the orphanage, Mateo's friend asks him if he would like to have had Marta adopt him if his dad were not waiting for him. Mateo is not too sure about that. He does not even want to talk about that because he has to go with his dad.

At Augusto's it is supper time and Beatriz and Valeriana have made some of Alex's favorite dishes. Augusto wants Alex to take it easy and not even come into work. The best is yet to come: the event of the year: the API dinner. He wants Alex at 100%. All of the distinguished members go with their families except for Dafne. Beatriz tells her she is a minor so she will not be attending: thank God. Looks like Luciana may not be going either. Augusto says it is just for "close" relatives. Alex of course will be bringing his girlfriend. It is for couples only. Alex says however whatever he will be going alone. The meal gets decidedly more unpleasant when Augusto tells Alex that he Alex  he will be filing a police report about his assault. Besides beating Alex up, they robbed his car. Alex gets very panicky and clearly does not want to do it. He says he doesn't remember much so what good would it do. Augusto is not buying it. Beatriz amd Valeriana chime in with how nothing ever happens by filing a police report. Augusto goes on about all of the crimes his car could be used in. Luciana supports Augusto. That car could be used in a fight with bullets and wounds. . . One never knows . . . She looks at Augusto and smiles. Luciana leaves the table. Augusto insists on the police report. Alex changes the subject to Alicia being allowed to use one of the cars at Icónika.

The next day Alicia is at the Ikónika garage to pick out the car of her choice eventhough she does not know how to drive (yet?) She is excitedly talking to the man in charge of the cars whe Nëstor comes on by to tell her she does not have to tell the man her whole life story. She tells him off. He is left surprised with his mouth wide open. Alicia says she will be back when she makes up her mind about which one she wants.

Alicia calls Alex at home to thank him for the car. He tells her it is not a gift but just something that goes with her position in the company. It is her due. She tells him about the family interview and how he could use that as an opportunity to get out of their noviazgo (formalized courtship). No, he does not want that. He wants her to take advantage of the situation for her own career. She also wants to know if he has thought about what they talked about: him coming out of the closet. He says he has and since everyone In his family has been so caring after his assault, he feels that he can do it without the fear that they might reject him. He is going to tell her about the photo but chickens out.

Roberto is polishing his shoes in his office and looking at beaches on his computer when Augusto calls him on his cell phone. He wants Roberto handling the speech his son is going to give at the API dinner. He wants to see what ideas he has for the speech and wants him to put them on his desk so he can look them over. He also needs to talk to him about a very serious and sensitive matter. Roberto looks concerned.

Néstor is filling Luciana and Chuchette in about Alicia getting access to a car. Luciana is mad because they never offered her a car. Chuchette reminds her about one of her uncle's own cars she has grabbed for herself. Luciana is not happy with Chuchette and leaves. Luciana reiterates, first they gave Alicia her job, now a car. What is next? Will she be the owner of Icónika?

At Augusto's, Dafne, Beatriz and Alex are going over photo albums together and talking about trips they took as a family. They talk about the family they used to be. Alex tells them that he has something very important to tell them at supper. Dafne then talks about her dad's very long business meetings and how she is not sure if he is really at  business meetings. Beatriz shuts her up by saying that children should never ever question their parents. Alex asks Dafne to leave so he can talk to his mom on his own.

At the Gutiérrez house the interview goes nice and smoothly. Ximena is the star. Magos tells Alicia to lighten up,and enjoy what she has going on with Alex. Alicia looks pensive.

Alex wants to talk about Augusto the cheating husband but it is soon clear that Beatriz does not want to. Augusto is a man. He has other needs. She does not care if she is living a lie or not. Alex thinks problems should be faced. Why such fear about being open? Beatriz thinks that there are secrets that can cause all sorts of bad things, so better to not reveal them sometimes. (She will not be rocking her own boat.) Beatriz hopes that Alex's dinner talk is not about backing out of the API nomination. If so, that will disappoint his father.

At Icónika, since Magos is still at the family interview with Alicia, Fátima is helping out at the reception desk. That does not escape Augusto's eagle eye as he enters. Out of nowhere Luciana appears begging Augusto for a car. At the same time, Roberto has his folder with speech ideas to give to Augusto, but Fâtima is not at her desk to take them from him and pass them on to Augusto. So, should he enter Augusto's office himself and leave the folder on the desk or not? He finally does and sees a notebook on Augusto's desk labeled : "Icónika Estados Unidos" (Icónika USA) He finds this interesting. He hears Augusto and his entourage coming down the hall and has nowhere to go.

Back at the interview, the reporter is asking Alicia about how the difference in social class has affected her and Alex's relationship. Alicia tells her that since their relationship is built on a strong friendship it is not an issue. Alex arrives right then and stands behind Alicia with his hands on her shoulders.

Roberto hears Augusto telling Luciana he is tired of her rude remarks and tantrums. They are now arguing in Augusto's office where Roberto has moved to hide under the desk. Augusto says that when they made their agreement, there was no mention of a car. Luciana reminds Augusto about his suspicious car accident and how he is involved in something so shady he almost was killed by a bullet. Roberto is shocked at what he is hearing.

Sort of got the feeling that Alex is going to have a change of plans about coming out to his family after hearing his mother's ideas about avoiding "inconvenient truths". : )

Thank you for today's recap and yesterday's poem and translation, Jarifa.

This show is the perfect combination of comedy romance and mystery. All the characters are interesting.

Stellar Jarifa. Simply stellar.

Your intriguing recap filled in so much that I missed. "Magos says goodnight and damns herself" was my favorite line of many.

Thank you for "(Chanclas=slippers)" - I always appreciate new vocabulary.

“She tells him to go to sleep and she will pray for their son alone”. Initially, I thought Bea different and interesting. Now I find her haughty, cruel and view the fake piousness she so blazingly displays contemptuous.

Best scene for me was watching Alex and Daphne together. Easy camaraderie. She makes him a bit more animated...

Angel should follow up his gut feeling that Marta is "not herself". While I dislike that she is trying to claim Mateo for her own, my heart goes out to her for her loss and I hope she gets the psychological help she so desperately needs before things go horribly wrong.

I wish someone would "stamp out" Nestor and Chuchette as they are pesky, unwanted cockroaches (apologies to cockroaches everywhere).

Jarifa, thank you for starting the day off so splendidly. It's always a happier day after reading one of your great recaps.

Diana

PS - it's heartbreaking to watch Mateo long for a mother. It's so sad that this woman has a history of mental health issues because of the death of her child.

Diana- you say things so well. Your comments about Marta are spot on. Hers is a character that I cannot hate. I pity her.

Sara, yes, this is a perfect combination of comedy, romance and mystery. Just enough of each to keep us hooked.

Diana, a "chancla" is like a flip flop kind of slipper or house shoe. Your comparison of Chuchette and Néstor to cockroaches is so appropriate as they scuttle and scatter around Icónika. They are useless. What do they get paid for? We may have an idea in Chuchette's case (sorry, but I had to go there) but Néstor????

Marta is a very sad character. I am just worried that Mateo is going to come to trust her too much.

Is it stupid to hope that in the case of Marta that eventually she and Roberto come to terms, she and her husband become friends with Roberto and Alicia and they invite each other to dinner parties?

Would that not be lovely? With this novela, who knows? It is sure quirky enough to let something like that happen.

Jarifa- I love your retelling of this episode.

I'm so glad that Alex is now back to believing Alicia is a good person. They are better when they work together. He will need her support when he finally comes out of the closet. He made be outed by these criminal blackmailers before he's ready.

One correction-- Alicia wasn't showing Marcelo the Oki Oki campaign. She was showing him the campaign she designed for his hair products.

The scene with Magos and Ximena was so sad. I was really disgusted by Magos' whole attitude about revealing to Ximena who her bio-dad is. Ugh! And now we know she wasn't abandoned by some great love. She cheated on her novio with some other dude who knocked her up, and whose name she can't even remember. I'm starting to understand why Nacho has no patience for her.

I agree that Marta is a sad woman, and I wish her husband would realize she's off her meds, before she does anything crazy. Sara- That's a nice thought about them sharing time with Mateo with Roberto, but the fact is that Marta is crazy, and when she looks at Mateo she is not seeing him at all, but her dead son Angel, of whom he reminds her. That's not healthy in the least, and not fair to Mateo. Even his little friend was weirded out by how she calls him Angel. "Doesn't she know that's not your name?"

It's true, Vivi. Marta is not doing healthy things at all. I guess I'm channeling Pollyanna and hoping she gets the help she needs before any psychological damage is done to Mateo. :-(

Sorry to comment bomb-

If a character's name is remembered incorrectly but it's still said aloud, does that mean we will see that character later?

Thanks, Vivi for the "hair products" info.

Magos sure has a lot to do to redeem herself. Damning herself before falling asleep does not quite do it for me.

Sara, now that is a conundrum!

Sara- I think since it was brought up, for sure Magos' baby-daddy mystery will soon take center stage. As well as her vandalism of that car, since they were laughing about her getting away with it, AND she's been wearing that very unique hoodie a lot lately.

Wonderful recap!

Magos is dead to me. We have seen her come home from work and go directly to the tv to see her TN. She has no motherly instincts and seems not to care about Ximena. No wonder Ximena doesn't call her mom. Now, she comes home late and drunk.

Marta is a very sympathetic character but also a very dangerous one. Her husband needs to take action. I have a hard time believing that she was allowed to be at the orphanage that late, especially after Venus told her she can't just come and go as she pleases.

I too am glad that Alicia and Alex are back on the same team. I worry about the photo Alex received. Any chance Nestor is following him around? He seems to not have a job other than spreading gossip.

Oh I so hope that Alicia hits it out of the park with her campaign for Oki Oki.

Best part of the episode was the family time between Alex, Dafne and Beatriz. It's as if Bea finally remembered how to be kind to Dafne. Alex seems to bring out the best in the family.

I wonder if Alex will come out. After what Bea said I would be holding my tongue. In the intro we see Alex and Alicia getting married but I can see Augusto knowing Alex is gay and forcing him to marry.

Chancla=flip flop or house shoe. Another awesome vocab word for me to throw out there! Thank you!

Wow! Jarifa, nothing better to say than 100% perfecto. And 1AM too. Thank You.

I thought that it was sweet when Ximena covered up her passed out mother with a blanket but in a way it was also sad. Will Magos ever have a I see the light moment? I haven't given up hope.

Diana---LOL again and again over your stamp out comment. I agree that Nester and Chuchette are the pits.

The magazine interviewer wants to interview Alicia's family tomorrow. She and Chuchette agree. I ask why does Chuchette have any say so in it at all?

Sara mentioned it---What if Roberto and the Vidal's were to become friends and all work together being supportive of Mateo? I add, what if Marta would become Mateo's godmother? I think that neither situation would work without Marta being under a doctors care. Otherwise if given the chance, in her mental condition, she would try to take over and undermine Roberto's position of father and legal guardian.

there is never a dull moment with this tn and so it is---must see tv tonight.

the gringo

Gringo- Chuchette is the head of PR for the company. She's the one who sets up the interviews and deals with the press.

Thanks Jarifa for your wonderful recap and also the vocab lesson. I will more likely remember "chancla" in the future.

Alicia dissing Nestor in the parking lot was one of the best scenes for me. That and the happy family moment between Bea, Alex and Daphne. I agree that Alex seems to be the glue in the family.

I think Don Augusto is on to Alex....I do not put it past him to investigate his own son.

It was sad seeing Ximena act like the adult. I am so glad she has Alicia and her grandparents. I keep trying to give Magos a chance but she always disappoints in some way or other. I used to feel sorry for her in the beginning...especially when Nacho always threw shade at his own daughter but at this point I can see why.

ITA Sara...all the characters are interesting minus Nestor and Chuchette.

CeCe -I'm embarrassed to say I Chuchette has an interesting way of talking though, *darrrling* :-)

Nestor is utterly uninteresting. That's true. Blech.

That should be "I think Chuchette has an interesting way of talking."

Sara, I agree about Chuchette. I find her more interesting than Nestor. She seems to at least work. I hope they both get a good anvil though.

I find it interesting that as big of a mouth as Chuchette has, she manages to hide the fact that she's Agusto's mistress REALLY well. She hides it better than Sandra does.

Carvivlie - Chuchette totally needs an anvil. At least she's fun to watch while she's making my blood boil. Nestor can't even manage that...useless twerp.

Vivi - do you think that Chuchette has only recently started her affair with Don Augusto?

Vivi: Agreed I was completely surprised with that plot point. I totally believed her persistent denials when Luciana confronted her about her relationship with Don Augusto. At least there are some secrets she can keep. Nestor on the other hand....

Agree Vivi, Chuchette hides it really well and we haven't seen her try to use it to her advantage. But then Sandra thinks she is in a relationship and Chuchette knows the real deal, otherwise she wouldn't have slept with the guy from the other company.

Sara- I'm guessing that it's been going on for a while with Agusto and Chuchette. But they are both so damned tight lipped about it, it's hard to tell. She certainly doesn't seem to be hounding him for more of a relationship like Sandra does.

The one subplot that they could cut and would not be missed, IMO, is the one with Braulio and Brisas. Just does not have enough of a connection to the main characters to hold any interest for me. Sort of like if we had to witness Gumaro's life when he is not with Roberto: I would not care. In this case, I just don't care. Better to shorten the novela by how many hours this subplot will end up eating up.

Late to the patio but want to thank you Jarifa

It really would be sad if Ximena didn't have her grandparents and aunt.

Jarifa: I kind of disagree with you about Brisa and Braulio. I like them. But I agree that I wish they were more incorporated with the other characters and action at Iconika.

Carvivlie, now if the writers would just listen to us. Right?

Thanks everyone for taking the time to stop by today!

I originally liked Brisa and Braulio but there is something missing from their storyline...I'm less invested now. Perhaps if they have more going on with the other characters like some of you mentioned. There storyline almost seems separate at this point. I think Braulio is interesting with his "supercool" "like" and "YOLO" speech. He is so addicted to technology...I cant imagine him spending a day away from that phone.

The editing probably didn't help the Brau and Brisa story. Maybe it will get better when we've caught up to Mexico. Brau's beard is fascinating.

It feels like they haven't been editing this week. Have we caught up to Mexico?

Thanks, Jarifa. Great recap.

Favorite scene - Alex, Daphne, and Beatriz having a happy group moment and taking a selfie.

The rest was quite sad, almost forgot this is a comedy -- but then the bright colors blast me in the face and remind me.

Vivi- I'm not sure. I think (don't quote me) that episode 58 aired in Mexico yesterday. I believe CeCe said last week she had Mexican episode 41...so maybe we're still behind? Math is hard.

Sara, I think you are right that a good part of Braulio and Brisa got edited out. Something had to go.

Something is definitely missing from their story.

Maybe they've stopped editing since ratings have gone up a little. I hope soso.

These were all single episodes this week. You are right, Sara, in Mexico it was #58 last night. We are about 11 single episodes behind from what I can see. Not bad: less than 3 weeks. I don't get why they don't broadcast the episodes at the same time. But then, there is that nasty censorship busiiness that they employ on Univision.

Thanks, Jarifa! So they aren't editing. Woot!

I've been watching Corazón Salvaje '93 on the Televisa channel on YouTube. It just makes me miss the little things like bumpers before commercials and full screen ending credits before avances. Uni seems to have gotten rid of all these things. Cutting off scenes mid sentence to cut to commercial is particularly annoying.

One of the funniest sight gags this episode for me was Agusto, coming out to the living room in the middle of the night to check on Alex, in his pajamas, AND carrying his little blue purse! I'm really starting to wonder what's in that thing.

I am going to have to keep my eye open for it!
