Pasión y Poder #8, November 12, 2015: The End of a Very Long Dry Spell
Honey, you've got a spider the size of a Buick in your bathroom! |
Labels: poder
Yes, the crazy moves ever forward. "Don't touch my tattoo." And instead of the "my car" refrain, we heard "my room" repeated over and over.
Does Nina ever wear her hair over the other shoulder? How does she keep it there?
More later. I have to get going into my day. Yawn.zzzzzzzz
Wow, Nina has taken being selfabsorbed to a whole new level. Annndd...we are back to "my car!!!!!" Enough about our daughter. Let's talk about me and my car.
I thought your recap was wry and wonderful. I hung on and delighted in every word.
Your headings were hysterical, especially "Going to the Gynecologist with my brother-in-law" and the simple (but laughter envoking) "Uh oh".
"Franco flexes his jaw and tries to look handsomely villainous. Or maybe villainously handsome" was among my favorites.
"Julia tears the note into tiny pieces and throws them into the trash [though the Patio thinks she should have burned the thing.]" You took the thought right out of my head. No, no I yelled loudly at the television, startling my fur daughter. I thought surely Eladio would make a beeline for the trash and even though he didn't, I kept thinking the "incriminating evidence" was still there.
"Please reserve a front row seat for me at the The "Die, Erick, die!" table". Revolting.
So, Franco is Eladio's son. They are so, so similar - no surprise. At least he is a lousy father all the way around.
Julia is in for a world of heartbreak.
Regina and David are rather cute together and while their chemistry doesn't quite reach Hepburn/Tracy level, I'm enjoying their flirting and circling.
Thank you NovelaMaven!
Diana
All of your comments were so great today.
Diana
I would love to see Erick proven to not be Arturo's son. Whatever his deficiencies as a father, Arturo doesn't deserve this. Neither does Consuelo deserve such a cheating jerk for a husband. Glad Arturo called Nina out on her deficiencies as a mother.
We all knew Franco is Eladio's secret son. There will be hell to pay when everyone else knows this. As to a comment from yesterday, Franco's fear about Eladio finding out about himself and Gabriela could be about company rules against fraternization (which are sensible), a means of maintaining control over him (which is obvious), or perhaps on some plan Eladio has to marry him off to someone from a family wealthier than Julia's now is.
It could also be that Franco is just as immune to real love as Eladio and could be a little more self-aware.
More later.
Poor Julia, so starved for affection, and dare I say, perhaps working with guilt? Those who are abused over a certain time are made to feel it's either all or partly their fault for not living up to expectation. That "love me as much as I love you" is a positive ploy on Eladio's part. Almost as if she feels she owes him for making the gesture to change too. But I think in his own sick way, he does love her but it comes with a sense of entitlement and possession of her. They sure are making these relationships complex.
As for Franco, well gee, big surprise. I think I saw that back in episode 2. Not a coincidence he looks so much like Eladio and has a LOT of his temperment. Gabby needs out of that relationship NOW.
Loved loved loved Arturo putting the skids to Nina. Interesting as Julia is getting back to Eladio, he's moving away from Nina. You clever writers. But I like he finally sees the toxic environment she has created in that house. And for cripes sake, what's with the car woman? Guess when you are bored out of your skull and all you spend your time doing is conniving and shopping, fixating on a new possession is considered your latest hobby. Buy her a bus pass and tell her to slum it.
Now as to our lovebirds...interesting to see that Gina does have a bit of a sense of entitlement being the rich girl she is. Just a smidge of Nina coming through there. That whole "the room is mine" when she came in after David had me squirming. Seriously, you want to be an independent woman, suck it up and YOU go get the corrected room. But the whole scene was sort of cute otherwise and my mind went to some happy places with the dropped towel. Actually hoping they DON'T wind up under the covers yet. Not with her drunk.
Daisynjay
Thanks, Diana. Those comments were made at around six a.m. , so II might have to go back to see what I said. Like you, I often think of Madeline and miss her positive force here. Hello, Mads. I am a!so missing Elna June and Sylvia and their comments. C'est LA vie, n'est-ce pas ?
Well, things are moving along nicely with Engineer Gomez-Luna and Architect Montenegro. Much more quickly than I expected!
Also unexpected, Julia and Eladio making love, for the first time ever! (The first time didn't count since it was rape.) Great twist by the writers, especially with the juxtaposition of Art and Nina losing their sexual connection, when that was so strong when the tn began.
How much longer can Eladio keep up this nice guy act with Julia? Surely, he'll crack soon. Although he's got to realize what brilliant results actually being nice to his wife has achieved in such a short time.
Uni did some censoring with the love scene so it wasn't clear but Julia and Eladio made love in the study and on the sofa. And from what I could tell the door was open so anyone could have walked by and seen them. The way the scene was filmed and directed made the love scene seem so awkward, at least to me. I guess it was meant to be that way.
I'm thinking Maribel has a brain tumor. And Doña Gisela is right that they should tell Jacinto what is going on. Poor Maribel. She seems sweet and I feel bad for her. That was funny, however, when Doña Gisela thought that Maribel was pregnant just because she fainted.
I'm enjoying the Regina and David scenes. Can't wait to see what happens tonight.
I keep trying to figure out what the tattoo is supposed to be but so far have had no luck.
cynderella...prepositions!!.."in the study and on the sofa" Its a start .
Vivi..yikes ..the first time after being married for 20 years...what? I want to turn Eladio into the good bad guy and Art into the bad good guy. Do it, Uni.
What does Maribel have to do with the main characters?
The censorship probably didn't cut much in the way of footage although I did wonder how he could have forgotten that they were in his very public study with the door open. I thought Simona and Franco lived in. You'd think he'd also want to mark the bedroom as the territory for that.
Also curious about why he didn't want her to touch the tattoo. That doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
I keep looking at the outside of Eladio's mansion. I think that it was the palace in Alborada.
novelamaven, I forgot to tell you that I love your screencap! I wonder how Carlos would caption it ! I did like the scene of that towel flying back and forth between David and Reg.
Like everyone else, I'm puzzled about the HUGE TATTOO. Have we seen it before? (this is my first episode). Are we supposed to assume it indicates some horrible past as a gang member?
Well, anyway, looks like the brief reconciliation is going to be just that...brief.
Looked back at some of the past comments and see that folks are puzzled about why Julia has stayed so long in this awful marriage. A couple of thoughts come to mind. From what I read in the paper, women are more likely to be killed AFTER they have initiated a divorce or separation proceedings. Legal requirements for the abusive spouse or partner to stay away are ignored and women are ambushed and killed, either at work, at home or staying with relatives. So maybe she decided the safest move was just to lay low and stick it out.
And from what we see of her reactions now, her greatest desire is to make her marriage work and to believe that her husband can change. Not surprising. Most women want stability and will take on the lion's share of the effort to make a relationship function. Particularly if there are children, adult or otherwise, involved.
And as for Arturo--well, frankly it's a choice between two losers. Someone who cheats on you while you're engaged...not an attractive option either.
So...her decisions make sense to me. But alas, the previews are telegraphing that the micro-mini honeymoon with Eladio is all going to come a-cropper.
Of course the towel slipped. I was surprised the scene between Regina and David was actually pretty humorous. And I mean really Regina? His towel slips and you yank it away? Methinks she was trying to sneak a peek. “No te emociones!” “No, tú no te emociones!”
What was with the soft music as abusive Eladio was watching Julia sleep? That jerk doesn’t deserve a theme like that.
Poor David made to wander the halls while wearing nothing but a towel and his backpack, he should have put on the motorcycle helmet to complete the look. Surely then some caring soul would have taken pity on him and let him crash in their room.
Ding ding ding! Everyone who suspected Franco was Eladio’s son was right! Speaking of the smarmy bastard, he almost grew a spine and told Eladio about his thing with Gabriela, but nope. Gabriela has more balls than him.
Petra continues to be delightful. Telling Nina that of course she looks beautiful and later trying to give Joshua romantic advice.
I like the theme music that plays during Regina/David scenes, it’s sweet and suits them. Can’t wait to see them grow closer as they work together on the project.
I don’t know how to feel about the Julia and Eladio sex scene. Plus, they didn’t even close the door to the study, some poor soul could have walked in on them and been horribly scarred. I guess at least they weren’t on top of the desk?
I wonder what’s the purpose of Maribel (she of the headaches and fainting spells) like are she, Clara, and Gisela gonna be stuck in their own subplot separate from the main story?
Ugh the meal with Nina and her two spoiled favorites was as unpleasant as one might expect. So of course they were joined by Joshua, he fits right in personality-wise.
That was sweet of Miguel to show up to support Connie since her husband can’t be bothered. He’s a pretty sweet guy, I’d wager some of his students probably have a crush on him and/or think he’s the cute young teacher.
Tipsy!Regina was fun to watch. And we got their first kiss already! That was fast.
The final scene between Arturo and Nina was great. I love how he called her out on her faults (mistreating Miguel, spoiling Erick and Daniela, trying to make decisions for Regina, still being obsessed with that damn car), but he forgot about the purple lipstick.
Mauricio, thanks for clarifying the place of the, er, tryst. I'll change that in the recap. It doesn't surprise me that the scene wasn't heavily edited. I suspect the grown-ups are leaving the stripteases to the kids this time around, and revealing just a tasteful and judicious bit of toned flesh here and there.
JudyB, we've seen the tattoo before and have been speculating about it. Conclusions: it is fake, it is ugly, but its meaning in the story is still obscure, although it is consistent with an earlier, hard-scrabble life.
Susanlynn, everyone around Maribel connects back to the main story:
-Clara works for Gómez Luna and is Consuelo's best friend from the Casa Hogar. She knows her secrets.
-Doña Gisela is Franco's grandmother and got a big payoff when she turned Franco over to Eladio at the time her daughter went to jail (for murdering her husband). She has been getting a monthly "pension" from him ever since then.
-And as Vivi said, Maribel's husband works for Gómez Luna.
We don't know the rest of the backstory yet. I don't trust 90% of what Eladio says about himself, so it will take someone else's word and some documents for me to believe anything about his past. As for Arturo, the infidelity could have been something like him getting drunk and an ex coming onto him like white on rice. At any rate, we will probably find out about this before much more time passes. He's had enough regret about this and the fallout.
Now I have another comment about Nina. She is scared witless of being poor again. She is also very vain. She is constantly looking for validation of her sexuality which she believes is the only tool she has for success. She gets a kick out of getting material things by trading sex appeal and sexual skill for them. Now that it's not working like it used to she is going to get very desperate and bitchier than ever, which will only drive Arturo further away. When that fashion show event happens and she sees Julia that will be a major red flag that will show her own expiration date in flashing lights.
Oh, JudyB, you spit that gum out right now and you and Susanlynn can take a seat in the front row where I can keep an eye on you. [jajajajaja]
"She babbles a little about the yacht, (but not the butt massage, which is mildly surprising, given that these people have no filters on the crap that comes out of their mouths)"
I'm beginning to really like this show despite typical TN fare. It is weird Julia does a 180 after a day but a starved dog does gotta eat no matter the hand that offers. Glad we didn't have to wait long to confirm Franco is Eladio's son and that Eladio, though gaming, backed off the rants. Have to say SG the stroke and going in for a lick or bite of the tattoo wasn't sexy for me.
Also very surprised how much I like the David/Regina thing, show stealer.
Novelamaven..I got a kick out of you pointing out Nina's "expiration date." Her old tricks are not working as well as they used to. I also get a kick out of Nina's attempt to keep ahold of Artie by literally keeping aholdbof him. Her hand is always on his shoulder or back. Heh
P.S. Just went out into the backyard to hang up laundry , and it is verra windy..sunny but cool and windy.
A tribal tattoo if it's supposed to "mean" something for this character should ( and he highlighted should) then be used as a symbol of someone who belonged to a certain heritage (the Maori in New Zealand wear them with pride) or harkened back to a long established secret clan or society, some going back to Egyptian, Aztec or Indian heritage, that wore those as a sign of "belonging" and still has their members wear them still.
Just thought I'd throw that out there. Might explain why he doesn't want her to touch?
Off to another meeting, but wanted to add this piece since the email just popped in at work from him.
Daisynjay
That tattoo. I got the impression that Eladio was embarrassed about it, but not that he didn't want her to touch it. To me, Julia looked at it like she'd never seen it before, but maybe that was a "Goodness, I'd forgot how huge that thing is!" look. Anyhoo, I thought she kissed it to reassure Eladio, kind of like you would if a loved one had a scar they were insecure about.
After she did that, I thought I might have seen his mask slip for a brief instant. He looked truly touched.
Although his feelings are obsession, not love, it is surprising he is able to care (as much as he is capable of) about anyone. He certainly doesn't love his sons.
Diana
I think Erick is a little smarter about things like that because Monserrat seems to not have this issue with him. That doesn't make him a better person because he is still playing dirty despite any business ethics Arturo would have tried to teach him.
Niecie, I like your explanation of Julia's encounter with Eladio's tattoo. But count me among the Euwwwww group (although thanks to Daisynjay for her friend's research). For whatever reason it's there, it *could* have been smaller and still made a big impact. The only reason I would accept its present size is that Eladio was kidnapped by narco-industrialist-terrorists and kept imprisoned in the jungle for 5 years and his ransom was to pay up or add a little to the tattoo every day.
Regina has been such a goody-two-shoes, probably all her life, I was maybe one of one that was surprised she would drink so much champagne and get so tipsy. I also wished they had not kissed, just yet. For David, it was too soon after the Dani hookup, even though he was already thinking about Reggie, in a non-professional way, since his hospital stay. The immediate results will probably be she doesn't, or pretends not to remember the kiss; he tries and she gives him a boffetada and they have to start all over again. At least she has an idea of what the whole package looks like. She wasn't drunk when the towel went missing.
Susanlynn--Don't put your hands on any stone monoliths while you are out there on that verra windy day.
Anita...If I could find some monoliths, I might be tempted, but I would probably have a hard time living rough and not being able to take a shower or floss my teeth even if Jamie told me that my eyes were his heart and I was his home. ....sigh....it is tempting.
So many clever lines... a personal favorite:
"Among other things, the champagne has loosened Regina's tongue."
and what a perfectly chosen photo. I'm not sure that this is a compliment, but this TN really suits your style.
When I initially began watching this, I was extremely annoyed by the frantic Eladio. Unlikable is one thing but unendurable is quite another. However now it appears that his medication may be kicking in.
Susana Gonzales is one of my favorites and though I liked her character Cynthia (LQNPA) better than Julia although she looks a bit better nourished in this.
I don't much like either of the main guys (Eladio nor Arturo), neither is a very good husband, nor do I care for Miguel who is something of a creepy sneak.
Probably not a surprise to anyone who knows my predilections (notably cathyx and AuntyAnn), I'm rather fond of Daniela, but I also find Regina to be quite refreshing (just hope that she doesn't submit to David while she's drunk). As for Nina, right now, while I think that she's very pretty (in a skanky way), I mostly feel pity for her being married to that jerk, Arturo.
What a fun group here on The Patio and I really look forward to participating in the discussion.
Carlos
Niecie, I agree with you and Diana about Julia's reaction to the tattoo, though you described it far better than I could.
Daisynjay, thanks for the extra info on tattoos. We are always educating ourselves around here, aren't we?
Carlos, while I agree that neither of the main guys is exactly a mensch, I'm rather surprised that you would take up Daniela's cause. She's rather a bore, don't you think? I would have expected you to advocate for Nina, who, as you point out, is not only pretty and scheming and somewhat to be pitied, but also frequently hilarious. Ah well, time will tell.
"When I initially began watching this, I was extremely annoyed by the frantic Eladio. Unlikable is one thing but unendurable is quite another. However now it appears that his medication may be kicking in."
hee hee
They'll survive after much heart. Great recap
By the way NovellaMaven. And why is that tattoo so dagum Big? It looks fake. Thats to much ink in one Place.
*PS: Dear Patio,
The screen shot caption is a loose paraphrase of a line in "Annie Hall." Annie (Diane Keaton) has called Alvy (Woody Allen) to the rescue after finding a spider in her bathroom. This is what he says after checking out the situation himself.
No, dear JudyB, it's all on me and my terrible tendency toward self-indulgence. [Sigh.]
Just a note to say that I'm really enjoying reading everyone's comments on here. I've been watching this as it airs in Mexico so, as usual, I'm cut off from the group. :-(
An interesting note... Diana Bracho was the original 'Julia' in the first PyP (there named 'Ana Laura'). It was her last telenovela role before her groundbreaking role as Evangelina Vizcaino in the classic 'Cadenas de Amargura'. There's a cute interview (in Spanish, of course) that I think one can find on YouTube where she talks about how Carlos Sotomayor (the producer of 'Cadenas') approached her almost apologetically when offering her the role of the iconic villana Evangelina, saying "I've got a very important role for you, but before I tell you about it, I hope you won't be offended by it...", where she says "why would I be offended?", and he continues "because I don't know if you'd be willing to play the villain" and she just LIGHTS UP at the memory and offers this delicious, sheerly delightful "SI!!!!", before going on to explain that, after her last back-to-back roles in 'Cuna de lobos' and 'Pasion y poder', where- she especially notes in the LAST one (PyP) her role was pretty much limited to 'un mujer sufrida'- she saw how much FUN the VILLAINS were having (namely, Maria Rubio in 'Cuna' and Enrique Rocha in PyP) and thought "now, why can't THAT be me??". Thus began a totally different career trajectory for her, playing some iconic villanas (which will, apparently, continue in the upcoming 'Hotel de los Secretos', that she has gone on record saying she has MUCH more fun with!
I bring this up because Susana Gonzalez has ALSO gone on record to state that she was originally hesitant to take on the role of Julia here as, having read for both the heroine and the villain, she was drawn more to the villana role of Nina.
She has also stated that she got more out of playing the complex antagonist role of Roberta in LSDP for 20 episodes than she did playing the typical heroine role of Camila in 'Pasion' for 120 episodes.
She is obviously a fantastic and dynamic actress, and let's hope that some creative producer somewhere offers her a role more to her tastes, similar to Sra. Bracho with 'Evangelina'. I have no doubt she would excel!!
Thanks for stopping by. I'm always interested in what you have to say and I love the delicious bits of background you provide.
It makes sense that an actor would enjoy letting loose in a good, meaty villain part. These long-suffering heroine roles tend to be very monochromatic and are probably not only tedious for the actor, but also rather depressing.
It must be great to have the freedom to go back and forth as Laura Flores and César Evora have done. After Lo Imperdonable ended, Grettell Valdez told an interviewer on Hoy that she hoped to play a good girl next time, and Ana Brenda laughed and said she was hoping to play a villain (though I'm not sure how soon either will get her wish).
Playing the hero is probably not as tedious as playing the heroine, of course. There's lots of tooth-gnashing but not much crying, for one thing. Even so, it's understandable that FC would want to branch out. (He was a little ham-handed in the first few episodes, but now he seems to be hitting his stride.)
Anyway, the role of Julia may not be a great source of professional satisfaction for SG, but I can't imagine anyone I'd rather see in the role.
