Pasión y Poder #8, November 12, 2015: The End of a Very Long Dry Spell

What kind of a hotel is this anyway?

As Regina is stripping down and looking forward to a nice relaxing shower, David emerges from the bathroom wearing only a towel wrapped around his waist.  The two stare at each other in disbelief.

Honey, you've got a spider the size of a Buick in your bathroom!

"What are you doing here in my room?"

"In your room?  This is my room!"

David scrambles for his key card and the towel drops.  Regina shrieks.  "Cover yourself!"

David says there's no contest – the room is his because he was there first.  Regina thinks David is not behaving like a gentlemen.  While she struggles back into her dress, he picks up the phone and calls the desk. "Something very strange has happened..."

Sleep, my pretty one, sleep

Julia wakes up and sees that Eladio is watching her.  He admits that he loves to look at her – she is so beautiful.   He tells her very gently to get some rest, and he will do the same.  Then takes his place on his side of the bed and closes his eyes.  Julia looks at him wide-eyed.  She holds out a tentative hand...

Let's both pretend to be mad

The desk confirms that the hotel simply made a mistake.  Although David was there first and his stuff is already in the closet, Regina insists the room is hers.  "Fine," he says.  "I'll leave."  He straps on his backpack, grabs his suitcase and the motorcycle helmet that she passes to him, and heads out the door, still only wearing a towel.

Regina locks the door after him and then smugly strips off her robe and heads for the bathroom.

When she steps out again, someone is knocking on the door.  It is David, of course, back for a forgotten cellphone.  (He has managed to put on a t-shirt, pants and slippers in the interim).

He picks up his phone and starts to leave, but then turns back.  "Why are you so bitter and in such a bad mood?  You're about to get married – aren't you supposed to be happy?"  She tells him that the wedding has been cancelled.  "But your boyfriend is out of jail, right?"  He is, she says, but there's another reason.   It's not a pretty story and she doesn't want to get into it.

"You're very different..." he begins, thinking of the girl in the wedding gown who literally swept him off his feet.

"You're also very different from the way I thought you were," replies Regina.  "Even though you saved Joshua from going to jail, it doesn't make you any less of a jerk."

Does Regina's smile take the sting out of her words? Maybe.  She says she is too tired to talk.  "Get some rest," he tells her.

No!  I have to see my son!

The prison social worker brings Caridad some bad news: her parole hearing has been postponed indefinitely.  Oh no!  She was going to see her son again!  And she had already told her mother about it!  She rattles the surprisingly flimsy bars of her cell in frustration.  Noooooooo!

No, no, no!  Julia must not know that Franco is my son!

"I'm sorry, Caridad," says Eladio, alone in his study, "but I can't allow you to show up right now.  You'd ruin all the progress I've made with Julia..."

He glances down at a faded snapshot of a mother and infant.  "... and she can't know that Franco is my son."

Arturo resists

Nina tries to wheedle Arturo into staying home for breakfast.  She worries that he is angry about last night. They shouldn't argue on account of Consuelo, she purrs.

"That's the problem," he replies.  "You blame Consuelo when it's Erick who has distanced himself from her and doesn't meet his obligations."

She moves very close and tells him softly that he's right, but it's the children's problem and they should solve it... just as she and Arturo have always solved their own problems.  She pulls on his lapels and moves in for a kiss.  Instead of succumbing to her charms, he backs away and says they will talk later.

False hopes and a half-hearted attempt at truth

Franco begins:  "For a while I've been wanting to tell you – there's this girl..."

Eladio gets a phone call at that moment, so Franco's words are left hanging.

"I'll be there," Eladio tells the caller.  He explains to Franco that the Businessman's Association is meeting and they want him there in half an hour.  He's sure they want to offer their support in his bid to be their next president.

Before leaving, he asks Franco what he wanted to tell him.  "Nothing," says Franco.  "It can wait."

Eladio tells Franco to go to the hotel and then catch up with him at the Association.  He's confident he can talk to them about the hotel problem and everything can be straightened out.

When Eladio leaves the room, Gabriela enters and discovers that Franco has once again failed to tell him about "lo nuestro."  She gives him an ultimatum:

Si no se lo dices tú, se lo voy a decir yo.
(If you don't tell him, then I'm going to tell him.)

Franco flexes his jaw and tries to look handsomely villainous.  Or maybe villainously handsome.

Girl Talk – Nina and Daniela

Nina the Queen is breakfasting in bed (she certainly doesn't want to sit at the table with Miguel and Consuelo).  Petra runs off to fetch Nina's antioxidants and medicinal tea and crosses paths with Daniela, who is on her way to visit her mother.

Dani and Nina hug.  Dani is back earlier than expected because she got bored with the beach.  She met Johnny Torres Gil there, she says.  "You remember, your friend's son?"  She babbles a little about the yacht, (but not the butt massage, which is mildly surprising, given that these people have no filters on the crap that comes out of their mouths).

And it was a good thing she bumped into him because that David Gómez Luna was there – and he made her so mad.  Nina is all ears: "What happened with him?"

Girl Talk – Julia and Gabriela

Julia shares her pleasure at the change in Eladio.  She rummages through her purse and finds Arturo's note.  Why keep it?  He is married and so is she.  And for the first time, she is beginning to think that:

Eladio puede ser el esposo que me hubiera gustado.
(Eladio can be the husband I would have liked.)

Gaby advises her to forget about Arturo.  Julia rips the note in half and then freezes when she hears Eladio's voice.  "¡Mi amor!"  Her fist closes around the pieces.

He senses something is going on with her.  She deflects his questions, telling him he looks happy.  He is, he says, and shares with her his hope that the Association is going to support his bid for their presidency.  "Now I'll have everything I need to destroy Arturo Montenegro!"  He kisses the closed hand that still clutches the fragments of Arturo's note.  "Remember how much I love you," he says before leaving the room.

Julia tears the note into tiny pieces and throws them into the trash [though the Patio thinks she should have burned the thing.]

Gaby now changes the subject to her own vida sentimental.  "Franco y yo somos novios. "  Julia looks disconcerted.

In confidence

Dani confides that she was getting even with David for what they did to her father.  Nina is horrified and frets about the scandal potential.  Dani tells her not to worry: Es super guapo, pero mega teto. (He's super handsome, but a real nerd.)  And David himself made sure to get the photos a reporter took of them.

Nina confides that things are going badly at home.  "I don't know what is happening to your dad."

Overconfidence?

Gaby says she and Franco have been together for some time.  She didn't say anything before because she thought Julia would be angry.  "You live under the same roof," says Julia.  "I know," replies Gaby, "but since you told me about Arturo, I felt bad not confiding in you."

Julia doesn't like it.  Franco is too much like Eladio, she says.  But Gaby doesn't see it.  "Franco is very different, he's very sweet (lindo) and he treats me very well."

Julia rejects the argument – and with more vigor than we've seen from her up to now.  Why didn't Franco talk to her or Eladio?  He had nothing to offer?  That's just an excuse.  Real love admits of no obstacles.

Julia gives Gaby a hug.  She didn't mean to hurt her, she says.  But it is time to sit down with Eladio and tell him the truth – no more seeing each other on the sly.

YOU representing US?

Eladio's bid for his colleagues' support is shot down bluntly.  They not only reject his bid for the presidency of the Association, they don't even think he should be a member.

They explain that Arturo Montenegro told them about Eladio's problem at the Condesa Hotel.  Surely he can understand that a man accused of corruption would damage the Association's image.

Eladio listens with apparent calmness, his anger only visible in the tightness around his mouth and in the hand that squeezes a plastic water bottle, bending it out of shape.  "It's all a misunderstanding," he says.  "The accusations are completely false and you can be sure I will clear up everything."

Querétaro (Not So) Rapid Transit

Regina's car has broken down, and she is waiting impatiently for a tow truck to arrive.  She has no way to get to an important meeting.  David cruises by on his new bike and offers her a lift.  She turns him down with her customary arrogance.

Curses!  Foiled! – or not...

Eladio is back home, and now he is having a tantrum in his office.  Julia comes running at the sound of broken glass and asks why he is so angry.  He tells her what has happened.  And then he thunders that  IT'S ALL BECAUSE OF THAT IMBECILE ARTURO MONTENEGRO!  Julia tries to calm him down.  She strokes his face and kisses him.  He turns away.  "Julia..."

"Make love to me," she says.

Where's the architect?

The panel has approved David's engineering plans for the remodeling project.  Now they need to coordinate everything with the architect.  Where is she?

Regina rushes in breathlessly and tells them about her car problems.  She and David are introduced:  "Architecta Montenegro, meet Ingeniero David Gómez Luna.   He will be working on the project with you."

How would you like that done?

Eladio takes Julia into his arms with abrupt, almost violent movements.  Suddenly he stops and apologizes.  He asks her how she would like him to caress her.  "I didn't think that mattered to you," she says.  "I want you to feel good, I want to please you – to love you.  You have no idea how much I desire you."  He kisses her and touches her gently; she seems to melt into his caress.  "And what I desire most," he says, "what I long for is that some day you might love me as much as I love you."

You gotta be kidding me, right?

Regina can't believe it.  But the panel explains that she and David have both been selected as the winners because their projects and skills complement each other's perfectly.  Regina grumbles to herself, but then womans up, and shakes David's hand.  She assures him of her professionalism.  They will be able to work together because she never lets her personal feelings interfere – and she's not going to discuss her private life with him.

David smiles.  He obviously knows better.

Julia is unafraid of the giant tattoo.

Eladio whispers that he wants her to have as much pleasure much as he does.  From what we see of his back and her shoulders, we can assume they are naked and in the act.  The background music is a vocal that telegraphs a message: love, not sleaze.

It's okay.  I'll be fine, just fine...

Maribel's headaches are getting worse and nothing much seems to help.  Clara wants to take her to a doctor – they can take up a neighborhood collection to pay the bills if they have to.  And it's time Maribel told her husband Justino the truth.  Maribel doesn't want to worry him.  She thinks she'll just go and lie down... but when she stands up, she drops to the floor, unconscious.  Clara calls for doña Gisela.

Smoke 'em if you've got 'em

A judicious display of bare knees and shoulders.  Julia nestles in Eladio's manly arms.  "You're so beautiful," he sighs.  Oh yeah.  They did it.

Are you pregnant or what?

Maribel, who has now regained consciousness, assures Gisela and Clara that she is not pregnant.  Clara, fearing that Maribel's condition may be serious, finally convinces her to see a doctor.  Gisela will stay with little Luisita.  And for the moment, no one will call Justino.

Zip

Eladio and Julia dress.  As he zips up her dress, he tells her:

Para mí, tú eres el lugar de mi felicidad.
(You are my happy place?  Nah. ISBIS – BNM.  It Sounds Better In Spanish – But Not Much)

He will be thinking of her every second of every moment.  She is so happy they are starting again.  And she doesn't want him to be sad about the Association.  She is sure he will end up as their President.

He asks about the foundation's fashion show and the launch of the new perfume.  She tells him it's the following Friday.  He asks:

¿Te gustaría que te acompañara?
(Would you like me to go with you?)

Julia's face lights up:

Claro.  Me encantaría que estuvieras conmigo.
(Of course.  I'd love it if you were with me.)

She brushes his lips with hers.  Gracias, she whispers.

As soon as Julia leaves, Eladio picks up his phone and makes a call:  "Elda, make sure that Arturo Montenegro is present at next Friday's event."

Tell him.

Gaby is still upset with Franco for not telling Eladio about their romance.  She says she told her aunt Julia and even though she wasn't happy, she promised to stick up for them with her uncle.  Franco once again promises to talk to Eladio.

The Bad Montenegros yell at each other in the beautiful garden that they don't deserve, not even remotely.

Nina yells at Erick that he should never have married Consuelo.   Daniela, as always, is dismissive.  He married her because he thought she was hot – a "famous model."  Erick grouses that now Consuelo wants to go back to work.  Nina is shocked:  "Doesn't she understand that she's married?"   Dani makes a mirthless sound that passes for laughter.  "Maybe you should let her go back to modeling – then she won't bother you."

Now Joshua joins the group. He starts kvetching about Regina leaving for Querétaro so abruptly.  Nina tells him not to worry – she will convince Arturo to make Regina come to her senses (entrar en razón).

Going to the Gynecologist with my brother-in-law

Miguel catches up with Consuelo in the waiting room.  He knows the fertility tests are stressful and he didn't want her to be alone.   Consuelo mentions that she is going to the ad agency afterward to turn down their job offer.  If that's her choice, Miguel supports her in it.

Pouty Regina is stranded again.

Her car is in the shop and her cell phone is out of power.  David once again offers her a ride.  She declines.  He tries to convince her that he is a careful and responsible driver (unlike the idiot she was engaged to).

Uh oh

Maribel's doctor has ordered some blood tests and a CT scan.  She can't make an accurate diagnosis without those results, but No me gusta lo que estoy viendo (I don't like what I'm seeing).

He promises to go very slowly

Regina, now wearing David's jacket, climbs on the back of his bike and holds on tight.

Cine Mudo

Consuelo and Miguel have stopped at the university to pick up some student papers.  They pass a poster advertising a silent movie festival and on a lark, decide to catch a show.  "I'm going to have to turn down jobs more often if it means you leave the house and have fun," Consuelo says.  And they do seem to be having fun.

Text and subtext

Architect Montenegro dines alone at a restaurant in Querétaro.  Engineer Gómez Luna sits at another table and observes her.  He sends her a text:  What are you having for dinner?   She looks around, sees him and pretends to ignore him.

He sends a second text:  I saw!  You're having the same as me!  Did you like it?

This time she answers:  Yes.

David texts back: Don't you think it's silly for us to text when we can share a table?

And Regina answers:  Okay, fine.

When David joins her at her table, she reiterates the ground rules: they only discuss work.  But she allows herself to be persuaded to have a glass of champagne.

Where the devil were you?

Consuelo and Miguel return from their movie date in great spirits.  Erick swaggers up to them and demands to know where they were.  Consuelo looks trapped.

The Two Faces of Eladio

Eladio asks Elda if Arturo will be at the fashion show on Friday.  He is pleased with the answer he gets.

Julia tells Eladio she prefers to stay home with him for dinner.  She will ask Simona to prepare something simple for them.  "Or bring something to our bedroom," says Eladio.  Julia looks unhappy and steps back from him.  "No, don't look like that," he says lightly.  "I'll never force you to do anything you don't want to do.  When we make love again, I want it to be because you want to."

Consuelo has this one covered.

Miguel begins to answer Erick's question.  But before he can say anything about the visit to the doctor's office, Consuelo interrupts him.  "Miguel came with me to turn down the modeling job.  Then we went to the university and we stayed to watch a movie..."

Erick doesn't want to hear any more details.  He gets it that she's so insecure that she needs someone to come along when she is turning down a job offer, but he's amazed that the bastardito actually left his cave. [The "Die, Erick, die!" table is being set up on the Patio even as we speak.]

Erick is such a loudmouth that Arturo hears him.  Now he puts his loutish son in his place.  Sort of.

"I don't want you referring to your brother like that again.  Is that clear?"

Erick doesn't exactly apologize, but he says he understands.  As soon as Arturo leaves, however, he points to his eyes ("I'm watching you!") and walks away.

Consuelo tells Miguel that as much as she enjoyed herself, it would be better if they didn't do it again.  Miguel understands – he doesn't want to cause her problems with her husband.

A social lubricant

Among other things, the champagne has loosened Regina's tongue.  She has apparently been bending David's ear about her life.  Now she proposes a toast to her dad (because he's a great guy) – and to David's dad too (because he's also a great guy, right?).

It's David who has to stop the flow of champagne and convince tipsy Regina that it's bedtime.  Regina giggles that David isn't the big jerk (sangrón) she thought he was – he's really very sweet.  She stumbles a bit and blames it on her shoes.

Arturo Montenegro has reached his limit

Nina tells Arturo she has bought tickets for them to Friday's fashion show.  She's hoping to buy a dress to wear to Regina's wedding.  Arturo tells her the wedding isn't going to happen – she needs to cancel everything.  These are fighting words to Nina and she demands to know what is going on:  He doesn't listen to her, he rejects her when she wants to be with him and he hasn't even given her the car she asked for.

"What's happening," Arturo tells her, "is that I'm getting fed up.  You abuse Miguel, you spoil Erick and Daniela and you don't even try to understand Regina.  My God!"

Nina protests that all she wants is Regina's happiness.  "If she marries Joshua..."

"If she really loved Joshua," retorts Arturo, "she would forgive him and go back to him, but it's obvious that she doesn't love him anymore.  Cancel the wedding!"

"You're the one who doesn't understand that your daughter is throwing a tantrum!  Besides, what does Regina have to do with my car?"

Arturo gives her a what the...??? look.  But she's not done:  "And why don't you want to make love to me anymore?"

"You think I'm going to feel desire for you when all we do is fight?"  With those words, Arturo starts walking towards the door.

"Where are you going?"

"Someplace where I don't have to argue with you."

Regina Montenegro has exceeded her limit.

David has escorted her to her door.  Now he fishes in her purse for the key card and then opens the door.  They stand on the threshold.  "I'm started to discover that I really like you," Regina tells him.  (Me caes muy bien.)  He says he likes her too.  (Me caes muy bien.)  And he's very attracted to her.  (Me gustas mucho, Regina.)

He strokes her face.  She leans in and kisses him.

Good morning, P&P fans,

This was a nice juicy episode, don't you think?

Thanks so much , NovelaMaven, for that snappy recap that has put a good start on the day.

Yes, the crazy moves ever forward. "Don't touch my tattoo." And instead of the "my car" refrain, we heard "my room" repeated over and over.

Does Nina ever wear her hair over the other shoulder? How does she keep it there?

More later. I have to get going into my day. Yawn.zzzzzzzz

Loved the subheadings , especially "Going to the Gynecologist with My Brother-in-Law." Heh

Wow, Nina has taken being selfabsorbed to a whole new level. Annndd...we are back to "my car!!!!!" Enough about our daughter. Let's talk about me and my car.

NovelaMaven, you always manage to make even the brightest days a bit sunnier.

I thought your recap was wry and wonderful. I hung on and delighted in every word.

Your headings were hysterical, especially "Going to the Gynecologist with my brother-in-law" and the simple (but laughter envoking) "Uh oh".

"Franco flexes his jaw and tries to look handsomely villainous. Or maybe villainously handsome" was among my favorites.

"Julia tears the note into tiny pieces and throws them into the trash [though the Patio thinks she should have burned the thing.]" You took the thought right out of my head. No, no I yelled loudly at the television, startling my fur daughter. I thought surely Eladio would make a beeline for the trash and even though he didn't, I kept thinking the "incriminating evidence" was still there.

"Please reserve a front row seat for me at the The "Die, Erick, die!" table". Revolting.

So, Franco is Eladio's son. They are so, so similar - no surprise. At least he is a lousy father all the way around.

Julia is in for a world of heartbreak.

Regina and David are rather cute together and while their chemistry doesn't quite reach Hepburn/Tracy level, I'm enjoying their flirting and circling.

Thank you NovelaMaven!

Diana

Susanlynn, "Yes, the crazy moves ever forward. "Don't touch my tattoo." And instead of the "my car" refrain, we heard "my room" repeated over and over" had me smiling in appreciation.

All of your comments were so great today.

Diana

Good stuff, NovelaMaven.

I would love to see Erick proven to not be Arturo's son. Whatever his deficiencies as a father, Arturo doesn't deserve this. Neither does Consuelo deserve such a cheating jerk for a husband. Glad Arturo called Nina out on her deficiencies as a mother.

We all knew Franco is Eladio's secret son. There will be hell to pay when everyone else knows this. As to a comment from yesterday, Franco's fear about Eladio finding out about himself and Gabriela could be about company rules against fraternization (which are sensible), a means of maintaining control over him (which is obvious), or perhaps on some plan Eladio has to marry him off to someone from a family wealthier than Julia's now is.

It could also be that Franco is just as immune to real love as Eladio and could be a little more self-aware.

More later.

NM, rich stuff!! Boy, things are ramping and secrets are spilling. So many of your wonderful comments were already highlighted...pure gems.

Poor Julia, so starved for affection, and dare I say, perhaps working with guilt? Those who are abused over a certain time are made to feel it's either all or partly their fault for not living up to expectation. That "love me as much as I love you" is a positive ploy on Eladio's part. Almost as if she feels she owes him for making the gesture to change too. But I think in his own sick way, he does love her but it comes with a sense of entitlement and possession of her. They sure are making these relationships complex.

As for Franco, well gee, big surprise. I think I saw that back in episode 2. Not a coincidence he looks so much like Eladio and has a LOT of his temperment. Gabby needs out of that relationship NOW.

Loved loved loved Arturo putting the skids to Nina. Interesting as Julia is getting back to Eladio, he's moving away from Nina. You clever writers. But I like he finally sees the toxic environment she has created in that house. And for cripes sake, what's with the car woman? Guess when you are bored out of your skull and all you spend your time doing is conniving and shopping, fixating on a new possession is considered your latest hobby. Buy her a bus pass and tell her to slum it.

Now as to our lovebirds...interesting to see that Gina does have a bit of a sense of entitlement being the rich girl she is. Just a smidge of Nina coming through there. That whole "the room is mine" when she came in after David had me squirming. Seriously, you want to be an independent woman, suck it up and YOU go get the corrected room. But the whole scene was sort of cute otherwise and my mind went to some happy places with the dropped towel. Actually hoping they DON'T wind up under the covers yet. Not with her drunk.

Some of you here may remember ShutupDoris from CI. We have several characters whom we use that title with..ShutupNina..ShutupDaniela..and please ShutupErik.

Thanks, Diana. Those comments were made at around six a.m. , so II might have to go back to see what I said. Like you, I often think of Madeline and miss her positive force here. Hello, Mads. I am a!so missing Elna June and Sylvia and their comments. C'est LA vie, n'est-ce pas ?

NovelaMaven- I'm so glad you got this great episode. You recapped it with your usual brilliance and humor.

Well, things are moving along nicely with Engineer Gomez-Luna and Architect Montenegro. Much more quickly than I expected!

Also unexpected, Julia and Eladio making love, for the first time ever! (The first time didn't count since it was rape.) Great twist by the writers, especially with the juxtaposition of Art and Nina losing their sexual connection, when that was so strong when the tn began.

How much longer can Eladio keep up this nice guy act with Julia? Surely, he'll crack soon. Although he's got to realize what brilliant results actually being nice to his wife has achieved in such a short time.

Thank you NovelaMaven for a fantastic recap. I loved the screen cap and caption. Also, loved the title. This was a very juicy episode.

Uni did some censoring with the love scene so it wasn't clear but Julia and Eladio made love in the study and on the sofa. And from what I could tell the door was open so anyone could have walked by and seen them. The way the scene was filmed and directed made the love scene seem so awkward, at least to me. I guess it was meant to be that way.

I'm thinking Maribel has a brain tumor. And Doña Gisela is right that they should tell Jacinto what is going on. Poor Maribel. She seems sweet and I feel bad for her. That was funny, however, when Doña Gisela thought that Maribel was pregnant just because she fainted.

I'm enjoying the Regina and David scenes. Can't wait to see what happens tonight.

That was interesting when Eladio wouldn't let Julia touch his tattoo. What could that mean?

I keep trying to figure out what the tattoo is supposed to be but so far have had no luck.

Thanks , Mauricio, for filling in the parts that Uni cut. Regarding the tattoo, hmmm..maybe the Mexican mafia????

cynderella...prepositions!!.."in the study and on the sofa" Its a start .

Vivi..yikes ..the first time after being married for 20 years...what? I want to turn Eladio into the good bad guy and Art into the bad good guy. Do it, Uni.

What does Maribel have to do with the main characters?

That ginormous tattoo reminds me of The Rock's Samoan tattoo.

Thanks NovelaMaven for the entertaining recap and the lines of the characters. I now have mega teto to add in my vocab.

This comment has been removed by the author.

Susanlynn- I was also thinking what role Maribel and her illness could play in all of this. My first thought was that her husband, who works for Gomez-Luna, would be desperate enough for the best treatment for her that he would do anything-- something illegal for Eladio perhaps?

I'm sure it won't be long before Eladio cracks. I wonder just how much he cares about what the sex is like with Julia.

The censorship probably didn't cut much in the way of footage although I did wonder how he could have forgotten that they were in his very public study with the door open. I thought Simona and Franco lived in. You'd think he'd also want to mark the bedroom as the territory for that.

Also curious about why he didn't want her to touch the tattoo. That doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Vivi...hmmm.I did not realize that Maribel's husband works at Eladio's company.

I keep looking at the outside of Eladio's mansion. I think that it was the palace in Alborada.

novelamaven, I forgot to tell you that I love your screencap! I wonder how Carlos would caption it ! I did like the scene of that towel flying back and forth between David and Reg.

Always love your recaps, instructive and hilarious. My favorite line was about Sounding Better in Spanish....But Not Much! Still, give the guy some props, it's a lot better than what Prince Charles said to his paramour.

Like everyone else, I'm puzzled about the HUGE TATTOO. Have we seen it before? (this is my first episode). Are we supposed to assume it indicates some horrible past as a gang member?

Well, anyway, looks like the brief reconciliation is going to be just that...brief.

Looked back at some of the past comments and see that folks are puzzled about why Julia has stayed so long in this awful marriage. A couple of thoughts come to mind. From what I read in the paper, women are more likely to be killed AFTER they have initiated a divorce or separation proceedings. Legal requirements for the abusive spouse or partner to stay away are ignored and women are ambushed and killed, either at work, at home or staying with relatives. So maybe she decided the safest move was just to lay low and stick it out.

And from what we see of her reactions now, her greatest desire is to make her marriage work and to believe that her husband can change. Not surprising. Most women want stability and will take on the lion's share of the effort to make a relationship function. Particularly if there are children, adult or otherwise, involved.

And as for Arturo--well, frankly it's a choice between two losers. Someone who cheats on you while you're engaged...not an attractive option either.

So...her decisions make sense to me. But alas, the previews are telegraphing that the micro-mini honeymoon with Eladio is all going to come a-cropper.

Thanks for the recap. I liked your use of the subheadings!

Of course the towel slipped. I was surprised the scene between Regina and David was actually pretty humorous. And I mean really Regina? His towel slips and you yank it away? Methinks she was trying to sneak a peek. “No te emociones!” “No, tú no te emociones!”

What was with the soft music as abusive Eladio was watching Julia sleep? That jerk doesn’t deserve a theme like that.

Poor David made to wander the halls while wearing nothing but a towel and his backpack, he should have put on the motorcycle helmet to complete the look. Surely then some caring soul would have taken pity on him and let him crash in their room.

Ding ding ding! Everyone who suspected Franco was Eladio’s son was right! Speaking of the smarmy bastard, he almost grew a spine and told Eladio about his thing with Gabriela, but nope. Gabriela has more balls than him.

Petra continues to be delightful. Telling Nina that of course she looks beautiful and later trying to give Joshua romantic advice.

I like the theme music that plays during Regina/David scenes, it’s sweet and suits them. Can’t wait to see them grow closer as they work together on the project.

I don’t know how to feel about the Julia and Eladio sex scene. Plus, they didn’t even close the door to the study, some poor soul could have walked in on them and been horribly scarred. I guess at least they weren’t on top of the desk?

I wonder what’s the purpose of Maribel (she of the headaches and fainting spells) like are she, Clara, and Gisela gonna be stuck in their own subplot separate from the main story?

Ugh the meal with Nina and her two spoiled favorites was as unpleasant as one might expect. So of course they were joined by Joshua, he fits right in personality-wise.

That was sweet of Miguel to show up to support Connie since her husband can’t be bothered. He’s a pretty sweet guy, I’d wager some of his students probably have a crush on him and/or think he’s the cute young teacher.

Tipsy!Regina was fun to watch. And we got their first kiss already! That was fast.

The final scene between Arturo and Nina was great. I love how he called her out on her faults (mistreating Miguel, spoiling Erick and Daniela, trying to make decisions for Regina, still being obsessed with that damn car), but he forgot about the purple lipstick.

Also count me in for the "Die, Erick, die!" table

It is so great to see everyone here and read your comments. Thanks so much Susanlynn, Diana, Daisynjay, Urban, Vivi, Renji Herbosa, Mauricio and ... drumroll please.... JudyB! Yes, now it's a party.

Mauricio, thanks for clarifying the place of the, er, tryst. I'll change that in the recap. It doesn't surprise me that the scene wasn't heavily edited. I suspect the grown-ups are leaving the stripteases to the kids this time around, and revealing just a tasteful and judicious bit of toned flesh here and there.

JudyB, we've seen the tattoo before and have been speculating about it. Conclusions: it is fake, it is ugly, but its meaning in the story is still obscure, although it is consistent with an earlier, hard-scrabble life.

Susanlynn, everyone around Maribel connects back to the main story:
-Clara works for Gómez Luna and is Consuelo's best friend from the Casa Hogar. She knows her secrets.
-Doña Gisela is Franco's grandmother and got a big payoff when she turned Franco over to Eladio at the time her daughter went to jail (for murdering her husband). She has been getting a monthly "pension" from him ever since then.
-And as Vivi said, Maribel's husband works for Gómez Luna.

Thanks, marco! Hey, maybe Arturo likes the purple lipstick. (Up to now, we have no reason to suspect him of having good taste.)

Judy, I think your comment is particularly true of Julia because she is so isolated. Eladio has kept her prisoner in that mansion with servants who report her every move and who won't drive her into town without his permission. I'll bet she doesn't even have a driver's license. With no real family anymore (I'll bet her sister died or why would Gabriela be living with her?) and no close friends because she isn't given the opportunity to make any, she doesn't have an escape route. I'm sure she doesn't even have her own bank account.

We don't know the rest of the backstory yet. I don't trust 90% of what Eladio says about himself, so it will take someone else's word and some documents for me to believe anything about his past. As for Arturo, the infidelity could have been something like him getting drunk and an ex coming onto him like white on rice. At any rate, we will probably find out about this before much more time passes. He's had enough regret about this and the fallout.

Now I have another comment about Nina. She is scared witless of being poor again. She is also very vain. She is constantly looking for validation of her sexuality which she believes is the only tool she has for success. She gets a kick out of getting material things by trading sex appeal and sexual skill for them. Now that it's not working like it used to she is going to get very desperate and bitchier than ever, which will only drive Arturo further away. When that fashion show event happens and she sees Julia that will be a major red flag that will show her own expiration date in flashing lights.

"Still, give the guy some props, it's a lot better than what Prince Charles said to his paramour."

Oh, JudyB, you spit that gum out right now and you and Susanlynn can take a seat in the front row where I can keep an eye on you. [jajajajaja]

Thank you NovelaMaven this is great!

"She babbles a little about the yacht, (but not the butt massage, which is mildly surprising, given that these people have no filters on the crap that comes out of their mouths)"

I'm beginning to really like this show despite typical TN fare. It is weird Julia does a 180 after a day but a starved dog does gotta eat no matter the hand that offers. Glad we didn't have to wait long to confirm Franco is Eladio's son and that Eladio, though gaming, backed off the rants. Have to say SG the stroke and going in for a lick or bite of the tattoo wasn't sexy for me.

Also very surprised how much I like the David/Regina thing, show stealer.

Hi, Judyb..So glad to "see" you here. Your comments are always so insightful and enlightening. Even with a strong family offering support and protection, breaking away from an abusive relationship takes strength and courage.

Novelamaven..I got a kick out of you pointing out Nina's "expiration date." Her old tricks are not working as well as they used to. I also get a kick out of Nina's attempt to keep ahold of Artie by literally keeping aholdbof him. Her hand is always on his shoulder or back. Heh

Uh oh...After bring called out by Cynderella a few days ago ,now Novelamaven is putting me in the front row with Judyb. Oh my..That is not a good idea. Judyb and I would never be allowed to sit next to each other in school. We would just rile each other up. I am so easily influenced by peer pressure.

P.S. Just went out into the backyard to hang up laundry , and it is verra windy..sunny but cool and windy.

So asked a friend of my son's about the tatoo FC wears, showed him something I found in a picture that was very similar. He's into the study of those since he was an an anthropology and sociology major. He said for the most part, those type of large shoulder tattoos are known as Tribal Tattoos. Most gang tattoos are smaller and obvious as are those that are done for prison populations, mark where you did time.
A tribal tattoo if it's supposed to "mean" something for this character should ( and he highlighted should) then be used as a symbol of someone who belonged to a certain heritage (the Maori in New Zealand wear them with pride) or harkened back to a long established secret clan or society, some going back to Egyptian, Aztec or Indian heritage, that wore those as a sign of "belonging" and still has their members wear them still.

Just thought I'd throw that out there. Might explain why he doesn't want her to touch?

Off to another meeting, but wanted to add this piece since the email just popped in at work from him.

Daisynjay

Thanks, NovelaMaven. What a fun, detailed recap.

That tattoo. I got the impression that Eladio was embarrassed about it, but not that he didn't want her to touch it. To me, Julia looked at it like she'd never seen it before, but maybe that was a "Goodness, I'd forgot how huge that thing is!" look. Anyhoo, I thought she kissed it to reassure Eladio, kind of like you would if a loved one had a scar they were insecure about.

Niecie, I wasn't sure to interpret Eladio's reaction but after reading your comment, I think you are absolutely correct, especially with "I thought she kissed it to reassure Eladio, kind of like you would if a loved one had a scar they were insecure about".

After she did that, I thought I might have seen his mask slip for a brief instant. He looked truly touched.

Although his feelings are obsession, not love, it is surprising he is able to care (as much as he is capable of) about anyone. He certainly doesn't love his sons.

Diana

Niecie..good point. Julia did looked surprised, but was she surprised because she had never seen the tattoo before or surprised at his reaction to her looking at it ? If the tattoo surprised her, he either got it after he raped her or that long ago attack was in the dark. Did he take her on their niche de boda , and then, no other contact in twenty years of marriage? I am confused. I guess that I need to work harder at suspending my disbelief. Maybe Eladio is a time traveling ancient Aztec warrior. Oh..yeah...let's go with that.

I think he just took his hormones elsewhere and treated all the previous women as he did Monserrat: It's all about my satisfaction and you get nada.

I think Erick is a little smarter about things like that because Monserrat seems to not have this issue with him. That doesn't make him a better person because he is still playing dirty despite any business ethics Arturo would have tried to teach him.

NovelaMaven--You continue to live up to your nombre de pluma (ISBIF). Merci. It was a rollicking good roll inside the big brown sofa? You'd think they would both at least want to close the door--or is risk-taking what Eladio is all about. Hope the stuff they left behind doesn't stain good leather.

Niecie, I like your explanation of Julia's encounter with Eladio's tattoo. But count me among the Euwwwww group (although thanks to Daisynjay for her friend's research). For whatever reason it's there, it *could* have been smaller and still made a big impact. The only reason I would accept its present size is that Eladio was kidnapped by narco-industrialist-terrorists and kept imprisoned in the jungle for 5 years and his ransom was to pay up or add a little to the tattoo every day.

Regina has been such a goody-two-shoes, probably all her life, I was maybe one of one that was surprised she would drink so much champagne and get so tipsy. I also wished they had not kissed, just yet. For David, it was too soon after the Dani hookup, even though he was already thinking about Reggie, in a non-professional way, since his hospital stay. The immediate results will probably be she doesn't, or pretends not to remember the kiss; he tries and she gives him a boffetada and they have to start all over again. At least she has an idea of what the whole package looks like. She wasn't drunk when the towel went missing.

Susanlynn--Don't put your hands on any stone monoliths while you are out there on that verra windy day.

Goggle : The Rock tattoo. Ah-mazing.

Anita...If I could find some monoliths, I might be tempted, but I would probably have a hard time living rough and not being able to take a shower or floss my teeth even if Jamie told me that my eyes were his heart and I was his home. ....sigh....it is tempting.

Susanlynn--Translation, please, Goggle. Is it Google, Oggle, Giggle, or all three?

Tattoos are big with gang members, but they usually have them on several parts of the body.

Anita..oops..That's what happens when one is hurrying to pick up shirts that have blown off the laundry line and not proofreading the typing on the tablet. I meant google but my tablet keeps autocorrecting.....giggle and oogle also could apply...so..yeah..all three...verra sorry for the confusion.

Ck out Mara Salvatrucha for gang tattoos & they are probably the worst gang there is,even doing dirty work cor drug cartels.

Eladio's elaborate tattoo resembles New Zealand Maori facial tribal tattoos. The boxer Mike Tyson has one such tattoo on his face that surrounds one eye. And, many pro NFL football players have similar tattoos on their neck and/or upper arms.

Thanks for this great recap, NovelaMaven. I apologize for having been missing from the discussion here since the beginning of this TN. I've had computer problems. What a great group of recappers, each with his or her's own unique distinctive style. What a treat to be here.

So many clever lines... a personal favorite:

"Among other things, the champagne has loosened Regina's tongue."

and what a perfectly chosen photo. I'm not sure that this is a compliment, but this TN really suits your style.

When I initially began watching this, I was extremely annoyed by the frantic Eladio. Unlikable is one thing but unendurable is quite another. However now it appears that his medication may be kicking in.

Susana Gonzales is one of my favorites and though I liked her character Cynthia (LQNPA) better than Julia although she looks a bit better nourished in this.

I don't much like either of the main guys (Eladio nor Arturo), neither is a very good husband, nor do I care for Miguel who is something of a creepy sneak.

Probably not a surprise to anyone who knows my predilections (notably cathyx and AuntyAnn), I'm rather fond of Daniela, but I also find Regina to be quite refreshing (just hope that she doesn't submit to David while she's drunk). As for Nina, right now, while I think that she's very pretty (in a skanky way), I mostly feel pity for her being married to that jerk, Arturo.

What a fun group here on The Patio and I really look forward to participating in the discussion.

Carlos

Carlos, Those of us who have been on this long and winding tekenovela road with you fir awhile know exactly which of the lovelies are your type. I am glad that you will be joining us for this bumpy ride. You have already introduced me to a new descriptor for the fairer sex...''skanky pretty.'' Yikes.

Oh wow, this is getting good. Not only do we have great comments from tofie, Niecie, Variopinta and Gobluefan, but Anita, JudyB and now Carlos are back in the game. Woo hoo! Not to mention that Karen has been spotted around these parts.

Niecie, I agree with you and Diana about Julia's reaction to the tattoo, though you described it far better than I could.

Daisynjay, thanks for the extra info on tattoos. We are always educating ourselves around here, aren't we?

Carlos, while I agree that neither of the main guys is exactly a mensch, I'm rather surprised that you would take up Daniela's cause. She's rather a bore, don't you think? I would have expected you to advocate for Nina, who, as you point out, is not only pretty and scheming and somewhat to be pitied, but also frequently hilarious. Ah well, time will tell.

"When I initially began watching this, I was extremely annoyed by the frantic Eladio. Unlikable is one thing but unendurable is quite another. However now it appears that his medication may be kicking in."

hee hee

Carlos, so glad to see you again. Your posts are always entertaining & usually with a different slant. I also hate seeing SG as a wimp. I agree, both main guys are gilipollas (sounds so much better in Spanish)

The start of a love story, surrounded by snakes, lizards, and cesspool water. Well nobody ever said love wasn't a struggle when people from their families are loony tunes.
They'll survive after much heart. Great recap
By the way NovellaMaven. And why is that tattoo so dagum Big? It looks fake. Thats to much ink in one Place.

Sorry I didn't mention it before but I love the Woody Allen caption!

Thanks so much, Urban!

*PS: Dear Patio,
The screen shot caption is a loose paraphrase of a line in "Annie Hall." Annie (Diane Keaton) has called Alvy (Woody Allen) to the rescue after finding a spider in her bathroom. This is what he says after checking out the situation himself.

Great to have that clarified. I've got some serious culture gaps so I know I miss a lot of your wit and humor. But there's more than enough to go around, even for us elderly clue-less!

Elderly clue-less my eye! Hah!

No, dear JudyB, it's all on me and my terrible tendency toward self-indulgence. [Sigh.]

Well, given my Prince Charles innuendo, I'm pretty self-indulgent too. But you knew exactly what I meant!

yes, I did. I guess we're entitled. :-)

Hi everyone!

Just a note to say that I'm really enjoying reading everyone's comments on here. I've been watching this as it airs in Mexico so, as usual, I'm cut off from the group. :-(

An interesting note... Diana Bracho was the original 'Julia' in the first PyP (there named 'Ana Laura'). It was her last telenovela role before her groundbreaking role as Evangelina Vizcaino in the classic 'Cadenas de Amargura'. There's a cute interview (in Spanish, of course) that I think one can find on YouTube where she talks about how Carlos Sotomayor (the producer of 'Cadenas') approached her almost apologetically when offering her the role of the iconic villana Evangelina, saying "I've got a very important role for you, but before I tell you about it, I hope you won't be offended by it...", where she says "why would I be offended?", and he continues "because I don't know if you'd be willing to play the villain" and she just LIGHTS UP at the memory and offers this delicious, sheerly delightful "SI!!!!", before going on to explain that, after her last back-to-back roles in 'Cuna de lobos' and 'Pasion y poder', where- she especially notes in the LAST one (PyP) her role was pretty much limited to 'un mujer sufrida'- she saw how much FUN the VILLAINS were having (namely, Maria Rubio in 'Cuna' and Enrique Rocha in PyP) and thought "now, why can't THAT be me??". Thus began a totally different career trajectory for her, playing some iconic villanas (which will, apparently, continue in the upcoming 'Hotel de los Secretos', that she has gone on record saying she has MUCH more fun with!

I bring this up because Susana Gonzalez has ALSO gone on record to state that she was originally hesitant to take on the role of Julia here as, having read for both the heroine and the villain, she was drawn more to the villana role of Nina.

She has also stated that she got more out of playing the complex antagonist role of Roberta in LSDP for 20 episodes than she did playing the typical heroine role of Camila in 'Pasion' for 120 episodes.

She is obviously a fantastic and dynamic actress, and let's hope that some creative producer somewhere offers her a role more to her tastes, similar to Sra. Bracho with 'Evangelina'. I have no doubt she would excel!!

Hi Stevey!

Thanks for stopping by. I'm always interested in what you have to say and I love the delicious bits of background you provide.

It makes sense that an actor would enjoy letting loose in a good, meaty villain part. These long-suffering heroine roles tend to be very monochromatic and are probably not only tedious for the actor, but also rather depressing.

It must be great to have the freedom to go back and forth as Laura Flores and César Evora have done. After Lo Imperdonable ended, Grettell Valdez told an interviewer on Hoy that she hoped to play a good girl next time, and Ana Brenda laughed and said she was hoping to play a villain (though I'm not sure how soon either will get her wish).

Playing the hero is probably not as tedious as playing the heroine, of course. There's lots of tooth-gnashing but not much crying, for one thing. Even so, it's understandable that FC would want to branch out. (He was a little ham-handed in the first few episodes, but now he seems to be hitting his stride.)

Anyway, the role of Julia may not be a great source of professional satisfaction for SG, but I can't imagine anyone I'd rather see in the role.

Diana Bracho & Guillermo Garcia Cantu, the ONLY salvation to FELS. Both are the BEST villains ever.
