Antes muerta que Lichita #49 Monday 11/30/15: Chanclas shows his true colors and Luciana prepares to hug an orphan

We learn more about Chanclas. He slipped up and let Ximena know: he knew Magos was pregnant before he left town. But, unforgivably, when Magos comes back in the room and Ximena tries to talk about it, he denies and implies Ximena is lying.

Later Roberto surprises Chanclas looking around in his office. Chanclas picked the wrong place to get caught because when it comes to lying bums, "it takes one to know one." Beto, immediately suspicious, later tells Gumaro about the incident and they agree: Gumaro will get his shady associates - "uh, ex-associates" - to look into the guy.

Chanclas meets his skeezy friend, Axilas, who asks if they're going to be able to reap a fine harvest in Ikonika as they'd anticipated. Chanclas says there isn't much money, mostly checks, but the real gold mine in Ikonika is - Alicia!

Later Roberto visits Elsa's cafe and, while helping out, feels them out about Chanclas. He sees none of them, especially Ximena, like Chanclas. Ximena says: "He's a liar and I don't trust him at all." She's horrified at the notion he would take her and Magos out of the house if he gets on his feet financially. She says, "he and Magos can go but I want to stay."

At the engagement party Beto was trying to "retire his proposal," but the arrival of Don Augusto's half-brother ups the pressure and he ends up proposing after all. Luciana sticks up her finger expectantly for a ring but he'd forgotten about that.

When the reporters ask Alex and Alicia about the date for their wedding Luciana butts in and says she and Roberto will be marrying first. She also says her wedding will be the spectacular one, the Gutierrez wedding will probably be "canned soup and chickens all over the place" because they are not "people of our level." Alicia gets her own back a bit by planting in the reporter's mind that perhaps Luciana is in a hurry because there's a bun in the oven.

Here's the family photo:

Nothing much happens in that scene with Elias, who caught Sandra looking at a picture of the two of them when they were married. She pointedly says she'll be leaving soon with Don Augusto - "Where, to Transylvania?" asks Elias - and she tears up the picture. We hear Elias had a fiancee but she dumped him.

Rafael (the half-brother) tells his wife he's selling the mansion and they'll be moving to a modest home in the suburbs of Mexico City. She is aghast. Turns out everything valuable they owned has mostly been sold already. They cannot afford the penthouse she prefers. Also, as Chekhov's gun we have Rafael's heart pills - he rattles them in the fancy pillbox he inherited "along with EVERYTHING ELSE" yells Augusto - and we hear he can't survive without them.

Alicia asks Sandra for an assistant and is denied. However, I think this new post that's been invented for Luciana - it has a name so official and long she can't even remember it for a minute - may turn out to be "Alicia's assistant." I could be wrong.

Gumaro, holding four plungers at once, tells Roberto: "Your troubles will end the day you are not afraid to tell the truth." There we have the crux of this novela.

At the API meeting there is a bit of a dustup between one of the old codgers and Alex who, dressed inappropriately in a blue zip up sweater when everybody else is wearing a suit, says publicity needs a more modern face. They frown and warn he must stand for "family values and tradition, not the avant-garde."

Alex says being modern doesn't have to mean you are licentious. If you want the excellent Spanish words for all this they were "primordial libertinos vanguardistos e irrespetuosos." Roberto steps in and says "new package same product" is the way to go, or, in the colloquial phrase, "la misma gata pero revolcada" (the same cat turned upside down?) which makes everybody laugh and reduces the tension.

Sandra bursts into a meeting room and starts reaming Alicia out for changing the Grimaldi slogan, running right over Alicia's mild attempts to speak. She barks, "why did you change the slogan?" "Because I didn't like it." More yelling from Sandra, then the client steps up: "I didn't like it either but I love Alicia's new one." Sandra beams falsely and says she agrees. Hah! The guy who thought up the rejected slogan appears at the door (he'd tattled to Sandra) and says, "On second thought, I quit." "Adios!" says Sandra.

Augusto congratulates Beto for managing the dustup at the API meeting and says: "if it weren't for my son you would have been an excellent candidate."

There was some important music playing when Alicia, late at night, discovers in the old files: ten years ago there were a bunch of campaigns that never got launched, for brands she doesn't remember (she's been there a long time).

Alex and Alicia decide to move the meeting of the next day to an undisclosed location, tell only the real press (not the gossip rags) and not tell his dad etc. They want to "raise awareness."

Alicia says she'll help, gets a new office somehow and gives it to Chuchette - in exchange for Chuchette doing the arranging for this last-minute switcheroo and keeping her mouth shut. However, Luciana (with the bribe of being maid-of-honor at the wedding and bffs - which is a joke because Luciana doesn't have any other friends) gets her to tell.

Magos tells Alicia: when you're married you'll be able to sit on your hands all day like a princess. Ugh, Magos! You are a long long way from rehabilitated!

Braulio is in his new boss Nestor's office when the "wife" comes in and asks for grocery and school-fee money from Nestor. They kiss etc. and Braulio, perhaps sensing something off in the performance, takes some pictures as he leaves.

It appears that Mateo's orphanage is the new location of the meeting. Luciana and her mom are arriving. "I can hug an orphan as well as anybody else," she says, "I can be Saint Lucy."

One of Mateo's cronies has smuggled him a picture of Roberto and Luciana torn out of a magazine. He looks forward to meeting her. But before that can happen, as the people are starting to arrive (first to come being the gossip mag reporters Alex and Alicia had hoped to avoid) Mateo suddenly has a meet cute with Alicia.

Thank you so much, Jane. The recap is excellent!

I, too, am wondering about the old never launched ad campaigns Alicia discovered. Hmmmm . . . A mystery!

Loved Roberto discovering El Chanclas rummaging through his office.

Loved Luciana trying to figure out what exactly is her new position.

How appropriate that El Chanclas' partner in crime is named "El Axilas" ( Armpits) and that he was wearing an undershirt not tee shirt. That was funny.

It was the second time Gumaro gave Roberto the same advice that goes straight to the point: when Roberto is no longer afraid to tell the truth all of his problems will disappear.

Another good one.

Good one Jarifa! I also forgot to mention that Chanclas stuffing his face at the table and talking with his mouth full, to the disgust of Ximena, was very eloquent. He and Magos are such unprincipled babies.

Jane- I echo Jarifa. This recap was excellent.

When Magos refused to believe Ximena, it made me so mad. It reminded me of those real life horror stories when a mother brings a man into the life of her kids who abuses them, and she refuses to believe the kids (or even blames them). She has fallen even further down on my list-- not that she has much further to fall.

Just what Alicia needs-- another loser trying to take advantage of her.

I hope Roberto can neutralize Chanclas before he does any damage to Alicia and her family.

Vivi, so true about Magos and her reaction to Ximena's comments. I wish Magos would just run off alone with El Chanclas and stay away. That would be a gift to Ximena.

Jane this is so good, thank you.

"la misma gata pero revolcada"

Mateo's smile at Alicia was so sweet, he knows she's the one.

Bless her little heart I can't imagine how uncertain Ximena's world is right now and a wonder she can sleep. Angst is written all over her face.

I absolutely loved the short retort Alicia gave Sandra about changing the slogan. "Because I didn't like it."

Excellent recap as always Jane! My favorite line "Chanclas picked the wrong place to get caught because when it comes to lying bums, "it takes one to know one."

Great now Alicia has another burden to worry about....bad enough she has Magos.

I wonder if Luciana is purposefully trying to make her dad jealous by being all grateful to Don Augusto. He seemed hurt by her actions which Don Augusto picked up on.

Does anyone think that Rafael may not live longer??....they were focusing on those pills way too long. It definitely made me nervous...but this is a comedy so maybe that is off limits.

Thanks, Jane. Wonderful recap – all the deets, choice vocab, and I learned about Chekov’s gun. I too loved Chanclas picked the wrong place to get caught because when it comes to lying bums, "it takes one to know one." Glad you included the family photo because I wasn’t sure if Daphne made it in.

Can’t believe Magos took Chanclas’s word over Ximena’s. Magos is lazy and selfish but not dumb. She knows how smart and mature Ximena is. If the little girl has never lied to her before, why would she start now? Grrrrh!

Diana, I hope we hear from you soon.

Thank you Jane! Enjoyed the recap & the family photo. It pretty much says it all.

"Because I didn't like it" Loved that short retort too! I liked how Alicia kept calm throughout that exchange because she knew in the end it was point to her. Sandra is really letting her dislike make her look dumb.

Jarifa, tks for the info on the nickname. Haha now I'm imagining of all the weirdly nicknamed friends Chanclas might have.

Also liked the run in between Alicia & Mateo, and so glad it wasn't Luci who met him first.

Add me to all the previous excellent comments list Jane.

A lot could be said about last night but for some reason all that I can think about is poor Ximena being raised by Magos and Chancias---PLEASE NO!!!

must see tv

Just looked again-- love the family pic (it wasn't there earlier). It so perfectly captures everyone's (not great) feelings about these two engagements.

Cece, I don't think Luciana was doing it on purpose. She just clicks better with Augusto's horrible personality, plus I think she's drawn to his power something her artisty dad doesn't exude. But I could totally see Augusto using that to stick it to his brother.

I hope Rafael doesn't die later on. I like him, weird glasses and all.

First, I would like to thank everyone for the terrific recaps the past few days...

Jane, this was excellent. I love your sense of humor and all the dialog translations you provide. Favorites include "meet cute" and the sentence that explains and points out my hands down favorite scene, "Gumaro, holding four plungers at once, tells Roberto: "Your troubles will end the day you are not afraid to tell the truth." There we have the crux of this novella".

Any scene of Gumaro and Roberto makes my day. The plungers were great but them fixing each other's tea/coffee was just so sweet.

"I can hug an orphan as well as anybody else," she says, "I can be Saint Lucy." Oh my. That was just priceless!

Niecie, how kind of you to note I hadn't been here. You are the best...

Diana

Thank you to all of the recappers from last week!! I was up in the mountains with no cell or wifi service. Hope all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

I wonder if Alicia will try to take Chuchette's new office away from her? I hope so.

I'm wondering if those old campaigns that went nowhere are somehow linked to Augie's dirty dealings? Maybe they were a cover for money laundering or something.

Loved "takes one (bum) to know one".

The previews make it look like Alicia's good fortune and winning ways may be coming to an end. I can't believe Sandra, Ms. Professional, would risk losing clients just to get back at Alicia. I mean the girl has won 3 accounts on her own (Oki Oki, Shampoo, Mi Can) and just helped secure the 4th.

Anyone else wondering if Luci is about to find out that Rob is Mateo's daddy straight from Mateo's mouth? I worry about how she will treat Mateo.

Carvivlie- Yes. But as soon as he got engaged to her it was a given he was going to have to reveal Mateo to Luci. Venus wants to talk to her, and he needs her to play happy families with him to secure him getting Mateo. The question is, what will Luci want in return? Look how deep he got in with her simply because she found out some of the stuff on his resume was made up.

Vivi, I know Luciana will find out about Mateo but from Rob, not by Mateo. Too much to ask, but I was hoping Rob would tell Luci in a way that would keep Luci in line and fearing the end of the engagement if she doesn't treat him well. Of course, most likely she just has more ammunition to use against him.
