Yo No Creo En Los Hombres #100, Wed 12/2/15: In Which Someone Finally Says the Name of the Telenovela
Julian’s Last Wishes
Adrian, Orlando and Doris sit Fermin down and review Julian’s
last wishes, and loose ends to tie up. Orly will take care of selling his car,
Adrian will take care of selling Julian’s part of their business, and the money
will go to Fermin and Honoria, who will need it more than ever. Adrian also
reveals the life insurance policy Julian took out (to take care of his parents), and
the contract he signed where he paid for a shop for Esperanza’s business—it was
a surprise he had planned for MD’s wedding. He also wanted to invest in MD’s
and Doris’ business. Fermin breaks down in tears over his thoughtful son.
Honoria emerges from Julian’s bedroom just long enough to spew her venom and to
refuse any last wishes Julian had to help his murderer (MD) and her family. She
also curses God once more, and decides she’s no longer speaking to God, but
instead to the dead.
Fermin leaves her to her suffering to go see if he can pull
Jenny from the brink. She’s still drinking in her apartment, but has finally
changed into sweats from her red dress. After he knocks a few minutes and begs
her to let them mutually support each other through this pain, she finally lets
him in. She offers him a drink, because she knows he needs it as much as she
does. Fermin stays strong and refuses. He made a sacred promise to his wife and
son. He wisely points out to Jenny that she just exchanged her addiction to alcohol
for an addiction to Julian—and has fallen back to alcohol now that Julian is
gone. This gives Jenny pause.
Ivana Gives Bad News
Gleefully and Gets Good News Despondently
Maleny enters Ivana’s living room just as she’s leaving a
message for Gerry begging him to get in touch, since she hasn’t heard from him.
Maleny mocks her seemingly lovesick message, but then warns Ivana that she
shouldn’t trust any man. And even less so Gerry, because he’s likely to be
cheating on her with a man. Ivana is not amused, and points out to Maleny that
she shouldn’t be either, when her brother just killed a man- Julian. Mal says
they all know it was MD who killed Julian, then asks for more dirt on her mama
so that she can force the info out of her about her father’s murder. Ivana
mocks her and uses her same flippant tone, and says they all know it was Maleny
who killed her father. When Mal vigorously denies this, Ivana points out that
the exact same thing that’s happening to MD, happened to Mal. She asks Mal if
she’s just stupid or pretending. She knows, just as surely as she knows that
Dan killed Julian, that Dan killed her father—and Ursula covered it up and
pinned it on Maleny! Her advice to Maleny is to trick/anger Ursula into
confessing it.
Later, Gerry finally makes an appearance and announces to
Ivana that he was at the clinic. He pulls out an official HIV test result. He’s
NEGATIVE! Whew! Yay! His recent Flu shot was the cause of his previous false
positive. Ivana is ecstatic, until Gerry happily tells her there’s nothing
stopping them from finding that surrogate mother and making a baby together now.
(That would be fabulous if, not so deep down, Ivana weren’t still obsessed with
MD’s baby.)
Clod’s Women Troubles/Alma
Sings “I Will Survive”…at least a few more episodes
Clod hears from the attending physician that Isela was beat
up and didn’t just faint. But they couldn’t do extensive x-rays after they
discovered that she’s PREGNANT. She’s so newly pregnant that a home pregnancy
test wouldn’t pick it up, but the blood test did. Clod has barely processed
these words when he turns around and is faced with the wrath of Alma, who has
heard it all. WHAM! Right across his fish mouth. Alma stalks off, and they take
the rest of the discussion to Alma’s hospital room.
Alma wants to know why he didn’t just tell her that he didn’t
love her anymore. Clod says he doesn’t know how it happened. Alma counters that
he does. She heard Isela’s confession about seducing him as part of her and Jo’s
vengeance plan. But that has nothing to do with the life commitment he and she
made to each other. “Until death do us
part…and that will be soon. Listen to me, although I’m terminally ill, I’m a
woman, and that’s how I want you to treat me. Not with pity.”
Alma points out that even if she weren’t sick, they would
have gone on the same way. Claudio would have gone on pretending to have
feelings for her, just as he did knowing she was dying and having his lover in
the same house. “You wouldn’t have left
me, even though you don’t love me anymore. And don’t you dare tell me again that
you love me as the mother of your children, because then I’ll also have to
forget that I’m a mother. And that’s the only thing that’s sustained me as I
fight for my life day by day!”
The doctor interrupts Alma’s shaming of Clod to tell them
that Isela has left the hospital (without being discharged). Yeah, just what
Alma needed. But she pulls herself together quickly, and gets Clod focused on
finding Isela. She calls and leaves Isela a message telling her she’s worried
about her, then takes off to search for her. Clod is standing there like, well,
a clod, so Alma breaks it down for him. “Look,
Clod, since you weren’t able to fulfill your vows/obligations to me, let’s see
if you can do it this time with the child you’re expecting with Isela.”
They both head straight to Josefa’s place, who’s surprised to
hear Isela left the hospital. She’s even more surprised when she happily drops
the bomb on Alma that Isela is Clod’s lover, only to have it fizzle because
Alma already knows. Ha!
Alma keeps her cool and keeps it classy, and Clod backs her
up. “I’m not like Isela’s father. I’m not
going to abandon my wife and kids.” Jo tries to wound Alma again by saying
she’s the typical little wifey, who will even put up with her hubby cheating on
her.
Josefa: What a fool
you are. But what I can’t understand is you rewarding him by letting him bring
his lover into your house! That’s the limit!
Alma: I’m no fool, nor
am I going to have Isela back in my house. I’m here because Padre Juan warned me
that you want to harm Isela. But if you hurt her again, the doctor will give us
the medical report showing how you have abused her. Don’t look for trouble,
Josefa!
Josefa accuses Alma of (falsely) playing the saint and
trying to get points in heaven.
Josefa: Why are you
defending your husband’s lover?
Alma: I’m defending my
right to die in peace! I should be slapping you for having the cynicism to
speak to me this way, after what you did to me. But no, Josefa. I’m not going
to sink to your level. I’m not going to do what you do so well—attack with
words; hurt with blows. And you know what? In a way, as a mother, I identify
with you. It has to be very hard to lose a child/daughter.
Josefa: What do you, damned
rich lady, know about losing someone? My daughter died because of an injustice!
An injustice HE committed!
Clod denies that’s true, but Josefa is too attached to her
version of the truth to see any other possibilities. It is Alma, however, who
has the last word. She admits that she has only recently started to experience
pain and loss, “But that doesn’t erase
how happy I have been. In contrast, you have turned the death of your daughter
into something that has eaten your soul. And now you want to destroy my family.
But I won’t allow you to do that, Josefa. You won’t destroy in seconds, what I
have built in years.”
Alma walks out with her head held high, and Josefa dissolves
into tantrums, screams, and inconsolable tears on the floor.
Clod finally finds Isela at the church, thanks to a call
Padre Juan made to Alma. He gives Isela the shocking news that Alma knows about them, and that she (Isela) is pregnant. Then he tells her he’ll stand by her and the baby. He and Alma especially don’t
want her anywhere near that child beater Josefa. Isela had planned to go up
north to stay with Doris’ Nana Chelo, but now she’s decided to stand her
ground, in her hood where she grew up her whole life, and fight for her baby!

Hombres…Except Max
MD is finally getting some food, love and comfort from her
first prison visitors, Max and Esperanza. Everyone tries to stay upbeat in
order not to upset the other two. Esperanza busies herself feeding MD, while
Max tries to both instill hope and patience. He skirts around the question of
how soon MD will be able to leave (not till after your trial, honey—IF they
find you innocent). He wants MD to let him know if she has any serious issues
in the pen, and he also forces her to take money so that she can pay for necessities
(including protection). MD insists she wants to keep working, at least
designing for her and Doris’ online clothing company (I foresee a lot of tan
and navy in her upcoming collection), even if she can’t manage to do any
sewing. She calls Doris, with Max listening in, and tells her the plan. Doris
(trying to hide the call from vengeful Hon), asks if MD is sure she just doesn’t
want to throw in the towel, and return the small business loan. MD wonders if Doris
doesn’t believe she’ll get out. Doris says of course she believes MD will get
out soon, and she’s all for continuing the biz, even though no one does as fine
needle work as MD does. As Tim Gunn says, they’ll make it work!
Meanwhile, in another part of the prison, Nayeli is having a
sad because her boyfriend/husband/ex didn’t bring her kids to see her, as
usual. Corina has finally been let out of solitary, and asks her chum, why so
glum? Nayeli tells her and says she’s not surprised her jerk ex didn’t bring
the kids to see her. “Yo no creo en los hombres.” Well,
Corina doesn’t believe in them either. And she’s this close to writing off
women too, after what that Maria Dolores did to her. Nayeli tells her MD is in
the courtyard having a grand old time with her visitors. Corina marches
straight for MD, spoiling for a fight, calls MD a litany of names, and spits in
MD’s soup! MD chases after her, with Max and Espy in tow, and has to shout over
Corina to explain how she looked high and low for her, asked Max to be her
lawyer, even sent money and food in with a stranger, and when all else failed,
made up holiday meals for the whole prison, in hopes the food and sweets would
find their way to Corina. Max and Espy back up her story, and although Corina
remembers that holiday meal (and realizes how hard it must have been to find
her), she’s not yet ready to let go of her anger, and marches off. Nayeli
catches up with her, and points out that MD’s story adds up. It was MD, not
Nayeli, who left that meal for her in solitary the other day. Plus, if MD got
her a lawyer, she would be dumb to pass that up. Corina thinks about it.
It’s the end of visiting hours and Max and Espy hesitantly
say their goodbyes to MD. Once outside the prison, Max collapses in tears. He
apologizes to Espy for falling apart, but he was working really hard to keep it
together in front of MD. Espy tells him to let it out. She knows how hard it is
for him, with his mom dying and MD behind bars, and him wanting to be strong
for both of them. They cry and embrace tightly. These two are a great
mother-in-law/son-in-law team.
As soon as Max and Espy leave, Dan is waiting to pounce on
MD (he must have paid a guard). He smugly asks MD how it feels to be behind
bars. He then tells her that she’ll only get out if she does what he says, and
threatens that he can come see her whenever he wants, as the father of her
baby. MD slaps him and attacks him for killing Julian. He pins her against a
post, as she fights him off and yells. Corina sees what’s going on, and who it
is, and rushes straight to Dan. The other inmates also make a bee-line to the
man attacking one of their fellow inmates. Corina is the first to get to him.
She yanks Dan by his hair, throws him to the ground, and starts kicking the
crap out of him. The other inmates join in, as MD looks on in shock and horror.
Finally, a guard comes to break it up. She yanks and shoves the women off Dan,
then decides to use her baton. A sickening THWACK is heard, as MD’s eyes widen
and she sinks to the ground next to Dan from the pain of the blow to her
STOMACH!

What am I gonna watch when this show ends? Each actor when called upon delivers, every scene I feel in my gut. Fermin and his anguish and my suspense as he knocked on Jenny's door. Juan Carlos Colombo didn't have to bring it all for a short scene like that but he did.
As MD and Dan lay face to face in the prison yard it was the first time I felt the bond between the two has been broken.

Alma was the headliner this episode, so I wanted to highlight her dialogue. The writers have really allowed each actor/character their moment in the spotlight, and given them some real meat to work with. I loved Alma taking away Josefa’s power over her, by simply not playing into her misery/anger/vengeance game. I’m sure her feelings for Claudio and Isela are all kinds of complicated right now, but she’s choosing to prioritize in her last days/weeks/months of life. Despite what Isela has done, she loves her unconditionally as a true mother does. She’s not going to have her back in her house, but she wants to make sure she’s safe and protected. But the responsibility of making sure that happens is in Clod’s hands. Let’s see how he handles it all.
I am SO glad Gerry is HIV free!!! Oh, but it just exposes that Ivana was never really planning on having a baby with him. Will she continue to play along? Will Gerry see through her and see the crazy mania for MD’s baby still in her eyes? Until I see her make a statement to the police, I still don’t trust that she’s really going to help MD get out of jail and testify against the Santibañez.
If MD’s baby survives her abuses in prison (after all the other abuses), it’s a Teflon baby. That little one is a fighter!

A flu shot and other immunizations can also create positive HIV ELISA and Western Blot results. Having or having had herpes or hepatitis may produce a positive test, as can vaccination for hepatitis B. Exposure to microbes such as those that cause tuberculosis and malaria commonly cause false positive results, as do the presence of tapeworms and other parasites. Conditions such as alcoholism or liver disease and blood that is altered through drug use may elicit the production of antibodies that react on HIV antibody tests. Pregnancy and prior pregnancy can also cause a positive response. The antibodies produced to act against infection with mycobacterium and yeast, infections which are found in 90% of AIDS patients, cause false positive HIV test results."

Wow. I only caught part of that because I don't have a lot of specialized vocabulary. It's a good thing I don't need an HIV test because I've recently had a flu shot and the hepatitis vaccines.

Urban- Yeah. When Gerry was listing all the things that can cause a false positive, it was an education for me too. People must get false positive tests all the time. That was a nice bit of education for me.

Urban- The time for the P&P double header is different in each timezone because the Telethon starts at the exact same time across the country. Check out a bit of the discussion on Kat's Proximas post earlier this week.
The description on my TV Guide for PyP tomorrow says "Resumen" then "Lo más relevante de la historia...." It starts at 5 my time and the telethon starts at 7.

Iam not likin ivana right now, she fixin to do some Stinky stuff. she could rid herself of a big problem if she would just go ahead and have a baby with Jerry, or adopt. I seriously do not believe that she wants that baby just because the baby belong to her ex jerk unless she wants some really good genes and that child she's thinking maybe Maria Dolores can supply that but still that's no reason to take the woman's baby. Gerry's is a pertty decent guy and she's not bad when she stop thinking crazy. And there's a pretty good gene pool right there. they could have a very sweet little baby together but noooo she wants to steal Maria Dolores is baby.

Nina- So glad you liked the recap. I too loved seeing Dan being kicked around by the female inmates. I only wish it had gone on longer before the guards decided to break it up. Guess the are more concerned about a visitor causing trouble because they were attacked by inmates, than by seeing an inmate being attacked by a visitor.
That scene reminded me of another Dan's (Danilo) fate at the hands of the women he hurt in my last favorite dark telenovela, La Malquerida. THAT was poetic justice!

Guess the are more concerned about a visitor causing trouble because they were attacked by inmates, than by seeing an inmate being attacked by a visitor.
That scene reminded me of another Dan's (Danilo) fate at the hands of the women he hurt in my last favorite dark telenovela, La Malquerida. THAT was poetic justice!

Alma was definitely a class act last night--and it was all her and not an act. Beautiful speech, from beginning to end.
MD complained about smelling bad, but didn't her hair look lovely? All freshly washed, set, shiny and brushed? I'm being cynical since the director didn't want to be realistic.
I was furious when I saw Dan-Dan show up after visiting hours were over. I hadn't considered he'd had to bribe someone. What did he really expect, that MD would welcome him with open arms and a loving kiss? I guess prison rules are the same as families--we can fight among each other, but when an outsider tries to hurt one of us, it's all of us against them (him). I didn't get to see enough of Dan-Dan getting the beat down he deserved because of all the women around him, to satisfy me. Ah well, he'll probably get dragged out by one of the guards and suffered only bruises, dang.
It would really simplify things for a happy (with certain reservations) ending if MD does lose the baby, but then the ending would come too soon. So, if the baby survives, it can only be because it is Max's, for my peace of mind.
What abuela said is true, at least for some victims. The unmarried cleaning lady my family had, had shared with me that her only child, a daughter, at that time about 12, was a product of a horrible rape. She saw her rapist's face in her daughter every day and was forced to remember the violation constantly. Of course, she was not in a financial position to get professional help, but at least she had a loving mother and family members around her to help her continue to live her life and take care of her daughter.

Anita- How horrible for that poor woman! I'd like to have your faith that MD's baby's sperm donor is really Max, but I don't think these writers take the easy way out of any situation they put these characters in- including carrying their rapist's baby.

I didn't even notice MD's hair and though she knew she would smell bad I could see her trying to look good for Max and running a brush through.
I felt sorry for Max as he broke down and tried to hide it especially since I knew Dan was inside terrorizing MD. I tasted bile when Dan kissed her on the lips.

Julian's hair was very nice when he was in prison too. There must be something in the prison water that makes their hair shine.

I am wondering why Luz Maria Jerez (Alma) never got to be a protagonist. I first saw her in the 1991 classic Yo Compro Esa Mujer where she played the dual role of a maid (younger scenes) and her grown daughter.
Kudos also to the makeup department for her look now that she is gravely ill.

I'm just catching up, letting these emotional episodes pile up before watching. I wanted to call out to Urban that I've been dying to watch 'Yo Compro Esa Mujer', but haven't been able to find it anywhere. Guess it's not easy to find many novelas produced before the 2000s
