Chapter
79: Family History Has Reruns
Caterers
are so easily bribed here and it doesn't take much. It was the only
way to get past security and into the Gómez-Luna mansion. I love
how small cameras are these days. This will make a great exposé if
I can manage it correctly. I don't want to be persona non grata here
until I'm prepared to get plastic surgery and legally change my name.
In the meantime I was able to sneak in in a caterer's uniform and
get some photos not available to the official photographer. Please
don't share these online or there can't be any more. I had a mole in
the household for after I needed to leave, so alas, no photos of
those juicy items.

Miguel
entered the hospital cafeteria with some GM documents. Arturo was
trying to get Nina to eat something but she was too worried about her
worthless son.
“How are
things going?”
“The
same,” Nina said, not looking at him.
“I hope
he recovers soon.”
“Yes, I
hope so, too,” said Nina, with no hint of gratitude and a heavy
tone of hostility. She got up from her chair. “I'm going back
up.” She left without looking even at the husband who had been
comforting her. The husband she claimed to love.
“Have a
seat,” Arturo said, uneasily. Miguel sat down.
“Dad,
Angeles sent these papers. She needs you to sign them.”
Arturo
reached for his pen, couldn't find it, and realized he would not be
able to concentrate. He felt too guilty for distracting Erick while
he was driving.
“No, Dad,
you didn't do anything wrong. This happened for a different reason.
Erick was driving like a maniac because he had just seen me at
Consuelo's apartment and she told him she loved me.”
“What are
you saying? Oh, my God. My God, you lied to me. You said you would
stay away from her. What the –”
“I know,
Dad, but I couldn't. Consuelo and I love each other.”
“No, no!
How could you let this madness happen? This woman is your brother's
wife.”
“I
couldn't, Dad. I couldn't control my feelings. Love is like that.
I thought you'd understand my reasons.”
“She is
your brother's wife,” Arturo repeated, grabbing his lapels. “She's
your brother's wife,” he said. It sounded more like a plea than a
threat. He released him and sat down. “You have to respect that
she is your brother's wife. You were raised with him. And you must
respect his son.”
“I will
respect that. I will respect my brother,” Miguel answered. “But
this does not mean that I will stop loving Consuelo.”
Arturo
stared for a moment. He sadly realized that in some way he was
looking at a younger version of himself.
The
following morning Jacinto arrived a little late to work at GLA. He
stopped by the reception desk to see Caridad.
“I was
just at the boss's house. I don't know how to tell you, but he
called me to set up an event I didn't know he was having.”
“So, what
happened? You want to tell me something so tell me.”
“It's
that Franco and Gabriela are getting married today.”
“Today?”
She was a
little taken aback, but recovered enough to realize she couldn't make
a fuss about it.
“Yes. I
guess it's difficult for you being here when you'd want to be there
with him.”
“You
can't imagine how much.”
“Well, on
the other hand it's still something to celebrate because Franco is
marrying a good woman.”
“After
all the pain the Blessed Virgin knows I've endured, this makes me
happy.”
She knew
that she couldn't have been invited without a major fight, not only
with Franco himself, but with Eladio. She would never be able to
explain her presence to Julia without telling her the truth and
Caridad had promised herself not to. She was not the sort of person
to willingly inflict pain on anyone. Despite all the deceptions both
by Eladio and by herself she was grateful to Julia and she knew that
if this fact came to light that would be a point of no return.
Julia and
Eladio were both happy that morning. The lower floor of the house
was decorated with fresh white flowers, the few family members and
friends were present, and the judge was on his way. Regina came with
David and was graciously greeted by Eladio. David mentioned that
they would have to return the next day to continue supervising the
construction and Eladio, who was usually all about business, said he
understood. Amanda, Julia's sister, looked as beautiful as a bride
when Franco kissed her hand. Eladio smiled as though he were
actually portraying the father of the groom. This seemed the perfect
intimate family wedding.
It might
have been until Humberto rolled into the room.
“What
kind of ridiculousness is this?” he demanded. Both his daughters
looked at him in outrage.
“No, no,
no, no, no. I don't want you spoiling your granddaughter's wedding,
please,” Julia said to him. She tried to lower her voice so the
guests would not hear the argument she was expecting.
“I know
that but I don't approve of this wedding,” he sputtered. “It
looks like –”
“Shhhhh!
Please!”
“Daughter,
how is it possible –”
Simona
saved the rest of this by arriving to tell them that the magistrate
had arrived. Eladio greeted him and they shook hands before going
into the living room. Eladio indicated that they would begin and
Israel escorted Gabriela down the beautiful curved staircase.
“Gaby,
you are gorgeous!” Franco said. He sounded sincere enough and her
hairstyle was certainly a vast improvement over her usual Wednesday
Addams look. “I am the luckiest man in the world that you will be
my wife.” Eladio nodded toward him as if to say he was making the
right moves.
“You'll
be getting married soon, too, I guess,” Franco said.
“For now
you'll concentrate on work. Must finish those hotels. There's a
time for everything, remember?” Eladio said. “Everything is all
about timing.”
Neither
Regina nor David took this badly. Gabriela hugged her parents and
Eladio directed everyone into the living room.
Caridad
pressed Justino for the details. She wanted to hear enough to be
able to picture the wedding. He told her about the white flowers,
the expensive champagne, the short guest list. Intimate, but
beautiful. Neither expected Marintia to arrive and ask “What do
you mean, wedding? Who is getting married today?”
“Franco
is getting married,” Justino told her.
After the
short ceremony the magistrate called Eladio and Julia to sign the
book as the groom's witnesses, then Gabriela's parents for her. Both
couples happily signed. The bride and groom signed next, Franco with
Eladio's prized gold pen that went everywhere with its owner. The
magistrate declared that they were married and the bride and groom
kissed. Julia and Amanda could not have looked happier.
Marintia
told Justino not to gossip about the boss and snapped her fingers to
shoo him out. He departed with some sense of relief. Caridad waited
for him to go before talking to her supervisor.
“I'm
sorry, but you knew about this,” she said. “You knew he was
getting married.”
“Yes, I
knew, but that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt.”
“I
understand more than you know,” Caridad said, taking her hand.
“Yes,
Caridad. I know.”
“Have you
thought about what you're going to do?”
“Yes. I
didn't sleep last night. My mind kept spinning and spinning.
Everything was going through my head. I had to think about a lot of
things. I'm going to have the baby and Franco will have to take
responsibility for it.”
Franco
raised his glass and proposed the first toast.
“Salud to
all, because I want to drink to the love of my life,” he said. “She
is the most beautiful in the world. I have always loved her and I
want to have her at my side all the days of my life to make her
happy.”
Yes, it was
a little overdone. Poor Gabriela looked into his eyes like a fawn
who couldn't recognize a wolf.
“You are
gorgeous, my love,” he said. They kissed.
Marintia
told Caridad that Franco was not in agreement with her about the
baby. She lost it and said “He got married!” while slamming her
hand on the desk. Two female employees turned around and looked at
them. Caridad took a breath and told her to think things through and
talk to him.
“I can't.
He will kill me. He will kill me.”
“Don't
say that.”
“But you
don't know him. He is very violent.”
“I'll go
with you to talk with him.”
“No,
that's not a good idea. You don't know what he will do and we won't
say anything for now. He needs to be assured that I had an abortion.”
“No!”
“He'll
force me. I know him better than you do.”
“You need
to talk to him to change his mind.”
“Caridad,
understand that you look at him with a mother's love. You haven't
seen it all because you haven't been at his side for a long time.
You don't know him. He is cruel. He is violent. He is despotic.”
Gabriela
talked with Regina at the appetizer table. Humberto watched, waiting
for his opportunity. Franco was also eavesdropping.
“I heard
your brother is in the hospital. It means a lot to me that you're
here in view of what's happening. If there's anything I can do –”
“Thanks,
but there's nothing we can do for him. He's in a coma and all we can
do is wait and have faith, but thanks.”
Franco
joined his bride.
“Franco,
congratulations,” Regina said.
“Gracias,”
he said, embracing her for a second. “We're almost siblings. And
you know, I heard about your brother and I'm sorry.”
Neither of
the two young women had any idea what he really meant by that.
Julia
looked at them and said “Imagine how it will be when our son
marries Regina.”
“You know
I'm alright with this relationship, but Arturo isn't.”
“Yes,
it's a pity. But it will be beautiful for our son to marry a woman
he loves as much as I love you.”
“Yes, but
this relationship has so much going against it. I hope they will end
up together but right now there are so many questions. I don't know
what to tell you.”
They
watched David and Regina kiss. Julia was looking concerned. Eladio
was unreadable.
“Caridad,
promise you will help me. Until your grandchild is born we have to
do things my way.”
“Very
well. What do you want to do?”
“I'll
have to work a little longer but nothing can be said about my
pregnancy. In a little while I'll tell them I need to take two
months in Argentina because of my family. My baby will be born
there.”
“But
you'll be so far away.”
“But only
for the birth. Then I'll come back with my baby and then Franco can
know I didn't have an abortion. It's the only way to do this,
Caridad. Please believe me.”
“I've
always believed that the truth is better. Think about it.”
It's
usually a foolish mother who doesn't know her own son. But Caridad
was willfully blind.
Arturo and
Consuelo sat in the hospital reception room and he brought up the
delicate situation in their family. She admitted to loving Miguel.
She had tried not to, but he didn't think that was enough. He
insisted she reunite with Erick. He didn't like that anything had
happened between Consuelo and Miguel even though she swore it was
only one kiss. He didn't like that this was happening and told her
this could not continue for the good of the baby.
Arturo did
not stop to think that a bad marriage was a poor foundation for a
child. He knew that even Julia stayed for years in an abusive
marriage with Eladio for her son's sake and could not believe that
this had changed. He himself had married once against his heart and
a second time to end loneliness and depression. His entire family
was falling apart around him with this revelation. It was almost
more than he could take.
Daniela had
coffee with Augustin in the hospital lounge. She had the nerve to
criticize Regina for attending a wedding while Erick was in the
hospital.
“It's
better that everyone go on with their routine and activities,
Daniela.”
“I can't.
You know how much I love Erick. No matter what, I can't think of
anything else other than my brother's in a coma.”
“He'll
recover, I'm sure.”
“Yes.
That's the only thing I want.” Her cell signaled she had a
message. She picked it up and checked her inbox. “Oh, look;
pictures of the wedding.” She paged through. “The bride doesn't
look bad. Franco looks happy. Here.” She handed him the phone so
he could look. His earlier smile faded quickly.
“It's
Gabriela's and Franco's wedding,” he said.
“Of
course. That's why Regina didn't want to miss it; Gabriela is
David's only cousin.”
Israel and
Amanda thanked Eladio and Julia, who said that Gabriela was like a
daughter to them. He even said how good Gabriela was for Julia.
Simona waited just outside the doorjamb as the Israel talked about
how wonderful their wives were and what a shame they had a father
like Humberto. Eladio glossed over the situation as gracefully as he
was able. They toasted the bridal couple.
Gabriela
asked Regina and David whether they were returning to Monterrey and
Regina told her that they would first be stopping at the hospital to
see her family before going to the airport. Finally she suggested
that they drink one more toast, which they were all in favor of.
“Hope
that passion never ends,” she said.
Just as
they were about to clink glasses Marintia arrived with a leather
portfolio.
“Good
afternoon. Sorry to interrupt.”
The
atmosphere of the room seemed to change and the change was not
positive.
Augustin
handed back Daniela's cell phone. She was peeved that Franco hadn't
invited her, but Augustin didn't notice for the moment that this was
contrary to her earlier attitude about Regina attending. He thought
it just as well because things between Arturo and Eladio were worse
than ever.
“Your
father doesn't want you or your sister to have anything to do with
the Gómez-Lunas.”
“It's my
father's fault that I work with him. If he had helped me like Eladio
did, things would be different.”
“If
that's what you think, why didn't you tell your father?”
“Well, I
did. And he said he couldn't break my contract with Eladio. He said
he would make me famous and he will keep his word.”
Augustin
shook his head. He knew that this was not anywhere near the entire
story.
Marintia
looked at Eladio, who was surprised at the intrusion. Humberto
rolled in silently and demanded to know if she was looking for the
groom, emphasizing that he was his grandson-in-law. She said it was
important documents from the company lawyer that couldn't wait and
she needed Franco and Eladio to see to them immediately. Eladio
suggested they go into the study. Gabriela watched Franco leave and
did not look happy.
“Salud to
this sadness,” announced Humberto. His daughters looked at him
knowing that all he wanted to do was start trouble.
“Who is
that young woman?” Amanda asked.
“Eladio's
secretary,” Julia told her.
“Daughters,
if you really knew Franco, you wouldn't allow that 'secretary' in
here.”
“Don't
joke, Grandfather,” Gabriela said.
“Well,
it's not a joke because surely you are more valuable to him.”
He laughed
and called for everyone to drink. It was difficult to determine how
much he had consumed. If Franco had heard this he would have hoped
it was more than he was allowed.
Consuelo
sat down on the sofa in the hospital waiting room and promised her
unborn child she would avoid Miguel. Just as she sat down Miguel
arrived. She told him about her conversation with his father and
finally decided she would resign from Group Montenegro so they would
not run into each other. She told him to forget her and find another
woman before leaving him alone in the waiting room.
Nina was in
Erick's room stroking his hair. He was in a foam neck brace and
breathing through a ventilator mouthpiece. Nina promised to take
care of him, his wife, and the baby. She begged him to wake up
before the baby was born. She looked worried as she kissed his
bruised face, which was covered in small cuts from the car's window
glass.
Eladio was
no fool. As he signed the documents and Marintia said that the
lawyer specifically asked her to deliver them because she was the
only one he trusted, he told her he would talk to the man. He handed
back the leather binder and told her that now that Franco was married
he wanted her to stay away from him. She said he didn't have to tell
her and she didn't want to be misunderstood. She began backing away.
This could have gotten more awkward except for Julia's arrival.
“We're
waiting. David and Regina are leaving.”
“Let's
go.” He took Julia's hand. “Excuse us.” He looked a hair
further behind himself. “Franco!”
Franco
stopped Marintia as she headed toward the exit.
“Tell me
why you came here.”
“I waited
all morning for you so you could accompany me to the abortion clinic.
But no; the Master is too busy getting married to his pathetic
little fiancee.”
“Ah, you
know perfectly well I was going to do this. What's more, Eladio
suspects us.”
“He
suspects us so you marry this idiot.”
“Marintia,
that doesn''t matter. Do you have an appointment?”
“In a
little while. Are you coming with me?”
“Do you
think I'm going to leave my wedding to accompany you? You know the
rules, Marintia.”
“Yes.
Exactly how it is.”
She looked
into his eyes for a second before leaving without another word. He
leaned on the desk for a second and took a deep breath.
Miguel met
up with Clara and they talked about his situation. He had loved
Consuelo for years and just when she was within reach Erick separated
them again. He could not understand this in view of Erick's insults
and infidelities. Now he is also a killer. Clara said she
understood but they needed to respect Consuelo's decision, especially
in view of the current circumstances. He couldn't believe that she
would remain in her abusive marriage with a man who would only bring
her pain. Miguel said he sometimes wished that Erick were dead. He
didn't see Nina approaching.
“What are
you saying?” she asked.
Clara
backed away as Miguel locked eyes with his stepmother.
“How dare
you say such a thing, you wretch.”
Nina
slapped Miguel hard. Clara was shocked.
“Of
course! You want my son dead so you can take his wife.”
“I'm
sorry, Nina. It wasn't my intention. I wanted to say I want him out
of Consuelo's life.”
“Remember
that she's his wife and she's having a baby.”
“I know.”
“And
whether you like it or not Erick will get back together with her and
his baby.” She paused for a second. “Get out of here. I don't
want to see you here. Get lost.”
Later
Augustin filled Arturo in on Consuelo's resignation. Arturo said it
was better this way and she could live well on the profits from her
shares in the company. He did not want Consuelo and Miguel to see
each other. Augustin reminded him about himself and Julia but Arturo
didn't see the comparison. He was determined that this relationship
not go any further because he didn't want to think of the
consequences. Augustin looked worried.
Arturo told
Augustin they would need to replace Consuelo and he told him he would
address that. Then Augustin reminded him of something more urgent.
“The day
after tomorrow we need to be in New York about your divorce. Should
I ask Angeles to make the reservation?”
“Of
course I'm not going. My son is hovering between life and death; I
can't leave him alone. He could wake up any minute.”
“Forgive
me for what I'm about to say, but I have to give you a reality check
and separate the friend from the lawyer. Erick might not wake up for
a long time, Arturo.”
“That
won't happen,” Arturo said, without looking at him. “What's more
I can't abandon his mother just like that when our son is in this
condition.”
“Then,
what do I do? Prepare the divorce?”
“Yes.
But we can't do anything with it for now.”
The wedding
guests were departing. Eladio had Franco escort the magistrate to
the door. Humberto announced he was going upstairs.
“I'm
going to rest; I'm exhausted. This wedding was garbage and nothing
to celebrate.” This raised his daughters' ire and Gabriela's.
“Father,
please!” said Julia.
“Thanks,
Grandfather,” said Gabriela. “We won't wait for you here.”
“Now that
you've committed the stupidity of getting married I hope that on top
of that you don't get pregnant.”
This drove
Eladio to the edge.
“Enough!
We are all sick of you,” he said. “It's time you returned to the
seniors' home.”
“You
can't do this to me, Eladio. I love you like a son and...I help you
with Julia.”
Nobody in
the room believed a word of that.
“That
isn't true and it's obvious,” Eladio said. “Besides, I don't
need your help because I trust my wife more than ever. Go and offer
Arturo your help before I return you to the center.”
“I don't
understand what Arturo has to do with any of this.”
“I know
perfectly well you've been in contact with him. I don't know exactly
why, but I know it's nothing good.”
“I don't
know where you heard this but I swear it's a lie.”
“They
weren't lies. I know you spoke to Arturo. Erick was your pretext.”
“I didn't
do anything wrong. Besides, I went to see him in the hospital.”
“That
makes no difference. You had a motive to do this.”
“I wanted
to stop Arturo. Only that, nothing more.”
Eladio
wasn't going to take any more. He put his right hand on Humberto's
neck so that his thumb spanned the old man's windpipe.
“Don't
keep lying. You've always hated him. Years ago you told me you
hated him for leaving Julia at the altar because he knocked up
another woman. The emotional scar she carried was that he had a
child with another woman. Tell the truth! Tell the truth!”
Had any of
the others been able to see better they would have known he was about
to choke the nasty old man.
“Alright,
alright. I wanted to talk to him about ending the relationship
between his daughter and David.”
“That's
not how it looked, Father,” said Julia. “And I'm asking you to
stay away from Arturo. I agree with my husband. The best thing for
you, for me, and the rest of the family is for you to return to the
retirement home.”
“No.
Daughter --”
“No.
Don't call her your daughter,” said Eladio. “You're going to the
retirement home.”
Humberto
knew then he had gone too far, at least for the moment.
Nina looked
for Consuelo in the waiting room.
“Consuelo,
Miguel is a disgrace,” she said. “Do you know what he said? He
wanted Erick dead.”
“No, that
can't be. Miguel is incapable of saying anything like that.”
“If you
don't believe me, ask your friend, Clara.”
“I don't
understand what happened. I decided to keep my distance from him.”
“It's
very good that you're going to distance yourself. And how are you
doing?”
“A little
better, thanks.”
“Good.
Because you have to take good care of Erick's baby. And because he's
the first grandchild you're going to name him Erick, aren't you? And
Ericka if it's a girl?”
Consuelo
found this curious. Had she been in a clearer frame of mind she
would have realized that to Nina she was just a uterus with legs.
Eladio and
Franco shared a cognac in the study. Eladio went to the high antique
desk against the wall.
“I want
to make you happy so I have something special for you,” he said.
“This should bring back a good memory. Ever since you were a child
you liked this.” He showed a blue square box. “So today I'm
giving it to you.”
“It's the
watch?” Franco broke into a smile.
“Yes.
How do you like it?”
Franco took
it out and put it on.
“Thank
you. Thanks for accepting me and taking care of me.”
Eladio
reached to shake his hand.
“I'm very
happy you have married Gabriela,” he said. “And even though I
can't give you my name always know that you have my blood and you are
my son.”
Neither of
them knew that Gabriela had just stopped near the open door and heard
Eladio's last statement.
Franco put
on the watch while Eladio continued speaking.
“Well,
with this wedding you are in all things a Gómez-Luna. Salud.”
They clinked the snifters. “Actually, Franco, keep this secret so
Julia doesn't find out.”
Gabriela
almost went into shock. She covered her mouth and began to cry.
Justino
stopped by the office and left Luisita with Caridad for a few
minutes. She told him she missed Clara, who stopped by to get her
things. Justino and Clara stared at each other.
Clara tried
to talk some sense into Caridad, but she would not listen. She
sensibly reminded Caridad that she had been apart from Franco for
more than twenty years and thus they were for all intent and purposes
strangers. Caridad insisted she needed to stop him from making bad
choices just as Marintia arrived and crossed her arms. Except for
her attire she may as well have been Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS.
“What are
you doing here?”
“I came
for my things,” Clara said. “And honestly I hope I never have to
see you again.”
She walked
away. Marintia tried to follow her with some nasty words, but
Caridad stopped her.
Clara got
her things in a transfile box. She met Justino and they had a
disagreement. He asked whether she had abandoned Luisita because she
had a new boyfriend. She was offended in view of his previous
objections to her and what had happened before. She said goodbye to
Luisita who asked her when she was returning home to her house. She
missed her a great deal. She hugged her and exchanged looks with her
father.
Angeles
entered Arturo's office to tell him that Erick's insurance man was
there to see him.
“Angie,
just tell him to send the check. I don't want to see anyone.”
“He
didn't bring a check. He insisted on speaking with you.”
“Let him
in,” Arturo said. He didn't need any more grief for the day. The
insurance man entered with a beige envelope and sat down.
“Now tell
me,” Arturo said. “Why don't you want to pay? The premiums are
paid, the car is covered, my son had an accident.”
“I'm
sorry but it looks like the accident was provoked.”
“I don't
understand. How?”
“It looks
like someone cut the brakes on your son's car.”
Israel was
embarrassed for Amanda and Julia that their father tried to ruin the
wedding.
“Well,
I'm glad that neither my daughter nor Franco let that bother them,”
Amanda said.
“Gaby
knows his antics, as we do,” Julia said. “The truth is that he
gets worse all the time.”
“I don't
know how much more you can take,” Amanda said. She embraced Julia.
“You're a great sister. I am so grateful for you taking care of
my daughter for all these years.”
“You know
I love Gaby like the daughter I never had,” Julia said. “You
don't know how much I miss you. With her here I felt closer to you.”
The sisters
embraced. Gabriela entered the room in tears.
“What's
the matter, my love?” Julia asked. “Don't pay any attention to
your grandfather. What's wrong?”
“Nothing,
Aunt. Nothing. It's just that it's a day with a lot of surprises.
Only that. I'm just very emotional.”
“Ay, my
love, smile!” Amanda said to her daughter.
“I'm
sorry. It's just a very emotional day.”
“Julia
tells me you're going to spend a few days in a suite in one of
Eladio's hotels.”
“Yes.
Because the honeymoon will be after the religious ceremony.”
“Good
because when you return we have an unconditional invitation with
accommodations...”
“Thanks.”
“Well,
I'm going up to relax,” said Amanda.
“Smile!
It's your wedding day! You look lovely,” said Julia.
The two
women left Gabriela alone in the living room. Franco came in and
embraced her from behind.
“Why are
you all alone, my love?”
“When
were you planning to tell me that Eladio is your father?”
Franco was
not prepared for this.

Oh, Urban, thank you so much for the fast recap as it is only 11:00 p.m. here in SoCal and I am still up to relish it. Your pictures are great too and how multi-talented you are.....wouldn't have a clue how to do that!
First, I'd like to say that Jorge Salinas' acting is just superb. He really carries me away with it, with his mobile face and great timing. It's so satisfying to see so many good actors in one TN. All very attractive too.
Erick can't go soon enough and after all the mean and abusive treatment he loaded on Consuelo why is the poor thing so upset?? I guess she loved him in the beginning. It seems to me that the best thing would be for him to pass on, Consuelo and Miguel take some time out, win over the parents and marry. I'm sure he would take good care of her and the baby. I've always thought it was a generous and good-hearted man filled with love who would take care of another man's child of a woman he loves. And they love each other. What right do the parents have to dictate their lives to them? (They don't!) Stand up and put a foot down people.
I almost got up and danced when Eladio told the old nasty Humberto that he was going to send him back to Shady Pines or wherever. Good riddance!

It's after midnight here in the Pacific NW and I'm so glad I was up to read this great recap! Wonderful and much appreciated UA, I love the pics they really add to the details of your recap!
So Eladio's house begins to crumble with Gaby hearing he is Franco's PaPa! Surely this is going to eat at her, because she loves her tia Julia and will not be able to abide keeping this huge secret from her. I suspect that Gaby will confront her tio and tell him that this is not something she can support. Poor Eladio, just when things were going so well for him. He should have told Julia himself.
I just about put a fist through my screen when Caridad told Marintia that she thought the truth was best. Huh? Caridad needs to drink a big ol' can of STFU! This woman is trifling. So all those years ago when she was slumming as El's mistress and then having his baby, where was the truth? What about now when Julia has given her a part time job and she is also working for Eladio? Funny how she has yet to tell the truth to Julia. What about Gaby? She was quick to cover up for Franco when she knew he was sleeping with Marintia? Caridad telling the truth would have saved Gaby all the pain she is going to experience when she learns her new husband is a cheat and a father to another woman's baby. Caridad needs to just sit down and zip her butt. This woman is a hot mess and causing all sorts of unnecessary trouble for those she claims to care about (Gaby/Julia).
Arturo is a hypocrite for sure. How dare he give advice to Consuelo about how she should conduct herself w/her marriage to Erick and their baby? This man has nerve. He knows full well his son is an adulterer and a murderer of his mistress but he expects that Consuelo hold up her marital vows to him. I do not support a Miguel/Con hookup but I at the very least want Con to be free and happy to find a man that is not part of the Montenegro clan.
So Hummy goes back to the retirement home. This is just going to fuel his support for Arturo. In Hummy's mind Arturo will set him up in the lifestyle he wants in exchange for his Julia.
Time for bed, I can't wait to read everyone elses comments in the morning!

This took a little longer because of the screen grabs, but I always do those when I catch a wedding. I always enjoy those episodes because since I don't come from a large family and don't have many married friends whom I've known since they were single I've not been to many weddings in the real world.
We had a laugh yesterday at Cynderella's "20th trimester" comment about Consuelo and that's a reminder that we haven't had a time jump yet in this series. We're due for one now because there are two pregnancies, a coma, and a divorce issue in play. Augustin's warning that Erick could be in a coma for a long time is the checkered flag to the race against time and Arturo is willing to take the risk because of the coma. What I am wondering about is how Marintia is going to conceal her pregnancy until the seventh month when her leave of absence is supposed to begin. Since she is far from overweight this isn't going to be easy even if she is transferred to another floor. Unless she's put in an isolated office I still don't see how she could conceal her pregnancy from anyone else at GLA.
That she is willing to have Franco's baby is easily explained: They're two of a kind.
I completely agree that Gabriela will not be able to handle the strain of this secret. I wonder whether she will delay the church ceremony over this. She is very close to Julia and is understandably outraged at this incredibly nasty deception. We know that Franco's failure to come clean with Gabriela is bad enough, but it's not even close to Eladio's concealment of this secret from Julia.
Completely agree also about Caridad. She has major blinders on because of everything Clara and even Marintia told her: She desperately wants to make up the 20+ years of lost time with Franco that she would otherwise have spent raising him to be a good, moral man. She needs to see him that way and that isn't what he is. He was raised by a monster who happens to have a handsome face (a truly deadly combination) and has become a junior version of him. He seems to have a few cracks in that armor because of Julia and possibly also Gaby, but I'm not sure he knows that.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to recall a past comment from him that he doesn't love Gabriela and had decided to marry her to advance himself. If he told that to Marintia he could have been lying because he's using her in what he was hoping would be a short-term arrangement. On the other hand, he might see Gabriela as his salvation. Gabi's entrance left me "impactada" for all the wrong reasons. What on earth was that thing she was wearing? That dress came straight out of the "2015 Ramera Bridal Collection": How to look like a virginal hooker on your wedding day. ¡Qué horror!
Regina on the other hand looked so lovely! After some consideration, I decided that I like her dress. Not something I would personally pick off a rack but Regina wears it well, especially with her hair down. She was pretty as a picture!
I must say that Julia and Eladio are excellent hosts! They know how to throw an understated but elegant reception and Humberto knows how to spoil everybody's fun! He's vile but hilarious so I feel kinda sad that they're sending him back to the nursing home. Instead, I propose the following solution: they put Humberto in a room with a giant case of booze and see which one of them finishes the other first! Or as Carlos suggested a while back, they can set him up with Petra! Imagine those two hooking up! I bet a couple of special encounters with that feisty and saucy lady are enough to send Humberto to his next life, where he shall be reincarnated as a toilet brush.
I don’t know about you but I don't understand Marintia. She says that Franco is cruel, violent and merciless yet she wants to have his baby, which will tie her to him for life? I don’t understand Caridad either. She says she loves her son but she is conspiring with his mistress to trick him into paternity, all the while covering up for his lies to trick his poor cuckolded (“cornuda”) fiancée into marrying him?
Over in the Montenegro clan, things are getting worse every day. When it rains it pours and Arturo can't seem to catch a break! It's one thing after the other and I take my hat off to JS for managing to look physically gaunt, depressed and exhausted to match his character's state of mind. Wonderful actor!
Nina picking baby names for her grandbaby was a LOL moment after so many scenes of tears and drama at the hospital: "If it's boy, Erick. If it's a girl, Erika." If it's a monkey, Koko.
Miguel was getting on my last nerve yesterday and I'm glad Nina bitch-slapped him on my behalf! I wish he and Consuelo would run away together! I hear Tabasco is nice. They can join Francisco in his exile and never come back! Clara and what remains of the WTF Family can travel there as well. Then all this happy bunch can star in their own spin-off TN which I won't have to watch. They can call it "Doormat and the Chump" or "Icky Romance & Filler Scenes in Tabasco".

I forgot the most important thing and it's a plea to my Bad Boy Eladio: Close The Darn Doors! People are either barging in on your Funtime with Julia or listening in on your conversations. Install a bolt on every door and learn to close them!

I am admittedly surprised the wedding occurred. It was only yesterday Gaby still (rightfully so) mistrusted Franco to the point she actually asked Caridad to keep an eye on him! For her to get married so hastily seemed gravely out of character. My heart went out to her when she overheard Eladio and Franco's conversation. Once her hurt subsides, she will realize that this is but one of many secrets and lies.

Just outstanding UA. Loved the intro explaining how your alter ego Dominick Dunne got all those photos and enjoyed all the fashion commentary. I too loved the caption "like a fawn who couldn't recognize a wolf"...and I would add, like a fawn who needs braces. Either get a good mouth guard or learn to keep your mouth closed,Gaby, rather than looking like an adenoidal special needs nymphet. They're so diligent about bleaching these actors' teeth into fluorescent white, I don't know why they haven't arranged for braces for both David and Gabriela. Oh well, no es de mi incumbencia.

Nandicta, that's hilarious. I think we all need to look out for examples for the 2015 (or 2016) Ramera Bridal Collection. That would deserve its own photo shoot as a Crimes of Fashion Special Edition.
Caridad's problem is that she was robbed of the right to be Franco's mother. I've repeatedly said that she should not have gone to prison at all for killing to protect him. We also know that Eladio delayed her release at least once. He effectively discarded them both until Gisela sold Franco to him at the age of 3 or so. I get that this was monumentally wrong, but Caridad is going about it all the wrong way. Getting Franco's baby isn't going to fill that void and will create more problems between her and him than it would ever solve.
Franco is now in a position where he could repeat Eladio's experience. He backed off of repeating Arturo's experience because he demanded that Marintia have an abortion, as Eladio demanded of Caridad. But Marintia isn't Caridad. She is hoping to use the baby as a pawn in a revenge game. She might try to blackmail him for half -- or more -- of his assets. This will make Eladio go ballistic when he finds out.
JudyB, if you saw the novela Rebeca back in 2003, the tooth bleach sent the actors' teeth into the neon end of the color chart. They looked like they would glow in the dark. What we're seeing now is kid stuff in comparison.

I understand Arturo's issue with the Erick/Consuelo/Miguel situation. He seemed to have accepted that Consuelo wants to divorce Erick, but to end up with Miguel is a recipe for future problems and that would be in a normal family. There is already enough disrespect from Nina toward both Miguel and Consuelo from the get-go that would only escalate if Consuelo and Miguel got together. Arturo doesn't even know about Nina's scheme to get her hands on Consuelo's and the baby's shares in the company; so far only Erick knew about that. He didn't succeed in getting them or we would know that by now, as it would be too important a plot point to have happen off-stage.
As I typed that I realized that Nina's expectation that the baby be named Erick could be related to her intent. Because Ape Child tells her everything she may already know that Consuelo intends to name her baby Arturo if it's a boy. This would be Grand Theft on so many levels. If Ape Child remains in the coma or dies I could see Nina plotting Consuelo's death and attempting to assume custody of the baby, which would make her executrix of its shares in the company. This might not give her a controlling interest but it would be enough to cause trouble whether she kept the lot or sold it to Eladio.
As for Daniela, she consistently fails to see that Arturo was not going to let her get a free ride with a job she didn't earn. She has no work ethic and a major entitlement attitude. She could even be a bigger narcissist than Nina by now. As for the terms of Eladio's contract, they're normal. She will probably not take them seriously. If she puts the moves on David going forward (We can't believe her if she says she won't) all that needs to happen would be him telling Eladio, who would stomp on that in nothing flat.
We've never seen Eladio play chess, but I'll bet he's good at it. Allowing Daniela to take a day or two for this family emergency is a test and/or a set-up. Since Erick is in a coma and there is nothing Daniela or anyone can do for him, it does no good to sit around in a hospital waiting lounge. Augustin and Arturo know this, hence Augustin telling her that it's best to go back to work. Daniela may pass or fail this test. Either way there will be a time when any request for down time will be less legit. Or she may party away a few nights and end up in compromising situations that go viral on social media or just look too wasted for photo shoots. The latter would put her on Double Secret Probation but the former would be a violation of her contract with a very expensive penalty that Arturo would have to pay because she doesn't have the dinero. Her shares in GM are protected because they're in Nina's name and will remain so unless Nina sells them. Arturo would end up having to foot the bill or fight it. Neither option is good.
Finally, the news about the brakes of Erick's car came faster than we could ever expect in the real world, but will matter big time. They could cause a knee-jerk reaction in Arturo to accuse Eladio. I don't know whether Daniela heard any of the insult fest between Erick and Franco at the auto event, but I also question whether she would make any connexion between these things. It's revenge for Erick trying to get Franco's cell and having him beaten up, but I don't think anyone else knows about that.

I've missed the last couple of episodes so I have a question. Do we know for certain that Mari is really preggers? Could she be lying just to trap Franco? I can see her going off to Argentina and somehow securing a baby to use.

We didn't see her read a pregnancy test stick so we have no proof. Your theory could play out because she doesn't seem the type to allow herself to get knocked up, but there is also the issue of DNA! DNA! If she did that Franco could demand a DNA test, which would end up with her trying to falsify it. Nothing we haven't seen before but it would be peculiar generational karma for her to actually be pregnant. It would demonstrate that Franco has failed to learn from Eladio's mistakes and show him that he's not as smart as he thinks he is.

Wow, UA, I appreciate the time and effort you put into giving us such creative and detailed recaps.
Kirbo ..yikes "turn off the tractor...I've already plowed that field." Yikes again. Maybe we should give Franky the nickname of one of my classmates in my rural school.."Plowboy." ..not for the same reason. He just walked like what they call around here a "heevahava" (roughneck) Like our Plowboy Franky, he was a fan of the ladies . I am also reminded of another show in which a teenage vixen trying to seduce someone's husband tells the wife "He must have to get swine drunk to plow your field." That earned the mean teen a slap right across her facade.
As for that rapid ceremony..."Marry in haste, repent in sorrow." Proverbs hold a lot of truth. I felt sorry for Gabby's dad who had to peek pathetically over her mom's shoulder to look at his daughter. Julia and Ladio were running that party . Gaby's folks definitely took a backseat.

Well, Gabi finding out that Franco has no problem lying to her/hiding major stuff from her came much more quickly than I would have expected. What will she do now? How will she keep this info from her beloved aunt?
Nandicta- "Go on hooker bride, spill the beans!" LOL! Love this. I also liked what Regina was wearing. I thought she looked very appropriate for not overshadowing the bride, and for someone worrying about an ill family member. I thought the outfit looked comfortable and feminine.
Humberto is vile, but he's entertaining. It's completely out of character for Eladio to still keep him around now that he serves no purpose, but the audience obviously wants someone to fill the role of thorn in Eladio's side, now that Gisela is gone.

I get a kick out of his arrogant mama's boy self. A highlight in the show for me was his bragging to his cellmates about his expensive shirt.
Don't blame Nina one bit for slapping Miguel. Hombre, if you want your brother's wife, fight for her. It SHOULD be hard, not easy. Why should Erick die to make smooth sailing for you?
Nice scene with Dani and Augie having a calm chat. Dani, how about doing a makeover on Augie's hair?

The other thing about Humberto is that he has to have that oxygen tank. The power chair is because he can't walk more steps than it takes to get up to go to the bathroom or to get into bed. The cigar Eladio gave him back when is something he's not supposed to have. That says emphysema to me so he could end up in a fiery blaze before too many more episodes go by.

Oh, Urban, it wasn't 7 months, it was after 4 months she's going to Argentina. She can wear one of those rubber wraps that are advertised to help you sweat during her 4th month. They look tight. Some women don't show for a long time--just look at Consuelo--and she's in her 20th month!

There didn't seem to be any pazzaz, no happy happy aire of excitement, no happy buzz in the air all around. It seemed to be laid back, too laid back. I don't know, was it just me?

Franco's motivation for marrying Gaby are so twisted up we hardly know what to believe.
Originally, we meet him and Gaby when he was trying desperately to get into her pants without a commitment. She put the brakes on it until they'd gotten approval from Elo and Julia to be novios.
By the time they did, he was already planning to take Eladio to the cleaners and brought Marintia into his scheme. The deal was--no strings, but sex a-plenty. At some point he told her not to fall in love with him and she told him it was too late.
He should have paid her off and sent her back to Argentina.
Somehow, I don't see Marintia lying about being pregnant. She's not the sort who would want a baby to interfere with her "career," whatever that is. But if she thought she might get more out of marrying Franco, or having him (and all of Eladio's money) support her, she might have stopped using birth control. I do agree that getting pregnant wasn't an accident.
Nor do I see her going off to Argentina and coming back with an age-appropriate baby, just to mooch off of Franco's bank account.
Now that she knows Franco is Eladio's natural son, all bets are off. She's going to use the pregnancy to live off him in splendor.
Her plot has taken a sudden turn, though, now that Gaby also knows about Franco being Eladio's son. Still, if Gaby divorces Franco and he is freed, I doubt Franco will go running into Marintia's arms. He told her from the start he's not interested in her as a partner.

Gringo. The Choreographed wedding? I too noticed that. I couldn't put my finger on it, but you worded it better than I can. It just looked sterile. Steve good point. Purple Lips did not show the kind of restraint Art showed when Dani deserved a long overdue WHACK. Art is an emotional train wreck right now, but he does have breeding. We know very little about Purple Lips, but it is not hard to see she does not come from the same stock as Arturo. I wonder like you, when her secrets are going to start surfacing.
Great comments and I have to agree that the wedding was lacking in energy. Still Eladio and Julia really do know how to set up a spread. That was a lot of food for just 10 people. I hope they took all that left over food to the orphanage! While I thought Gaby looked beautiful, I didn't think the outfit was appropriate for a civil wedding ceremony. It was more suited to an engagement party dinner.
I really did love Nina slapping the taste out of Miguel's empty head. I understand Miguel does not have warm feelings toward his brother but that was not an appropriate comment, considering there is an unborn child who will most likely be without its bio father if Erick dies or goes to prison. As a mother myself, I know if my son were fighting for his life, the mother bear in me would come out if I heard anyone, especially another sibling uttering such harsh words. I'm no Nina fan, but that is her son in that bed. Even Regina who is not close to Erick, managed to show some compassion and concern, willing her brother to fight for the child. Miguel showed his selfish ass on that comment. I really hope Consuelo comes to her senses and realizes she is not in love with mr creepy beady eyes. Miguel is emotionally stunted and needs to get some therapy and then date truly available women, not lust after and stalk a woman married to his brother. I wish he would exit stage left to Tabasco or wherever and take Mr. Corn cob stand Justino with him. Both are wastes of time for this viewer.
Poor Augie he literally had the wind knocked out of him when he saw his Gaby's wedding photos. Don't worry, Aug, the Love boat of the novios has already hit a rock and they haven't even been married an hour! Soon Gaby will be seeking solace or representation.

I think he will be the one to use this information to get revenge on Eladio by telling Arturo what he suspects. Arturo like a dog with a bone will go hard with the information. What better way to bust up Julia/Eladio than to tell her husband has a son she raised all these years?

He does have feelings for Julia himself so he has to know that this information will hurt her in every way he is capable of understanding.
Caridad is keeping the secret to spare Julia pain. Is that necessarily the right thing? Not sure, but we know that Humberto won't care how Julia feels about it as long as he gets the right price for her and he doesn't care who pays it.
