Pasión y poder, Episode 115, Thursday, March 31: Of cakes and fakes and folks on the take

Nina lashes out at Consuelo

The sight of Consuelo leaning on Arturo for comfort is more than Nina can bear.  [Maybe Nina remembers when she was the one taking tearful refuge in Arturo's arms the last time Chimp Boy was in the hospital.]  If the younger woman wants to see her son, Nina tells her bitterly, let her visit him at the mansion – especially if she continues to hang out with that dangerous chimp-beater, Miguel.

Consuelo protests that Miguel would never hurt a child, especially her son.  Nina isn't so sure:  Behind his gloomy, hypocritical face (cara de mustio) lurks a psychopath!  [But I think she's only saying that because she's a narcissist.]

¡Ya basta, Nina! says Arturo.  Miguel was only defending Consuelo.

"Whose side are you on?" Nina wants to know.

"I'm on the side of both of my sons because I love them both."

Nina doesn't buy it.  It's Miguel's fault that Chimp Boy is languishing in the hospital.  [And it's Arturo's fault that he isn't languishing in the reclusorio, but Agustín isn't around to remind them of that.]

Nina takes her parting shot at Consuelo:

"You can visit your son, but don't even think about trying to take him away."

Deaf and blind.  And dumb.

Julia continues to warn David of the problems that lie ahead if he stays with Daniela.  David tells her that Daniela has defended their relationship very bravely; and that means Julia can continue seeing Arturo with a clear conscience.   Once again, she repeats that she isn't with Arturo.

"Whatever," says David. (Como sea.)  He's going to stand by Dani and see her through her struggle with drugs.  And he believes that she truly is changing.

"Please," says Julia.  "There's something you don't get – Daniela isn't your responsibility!"  If he wants to support her as a friend, fine.  But he needs to be careful (prudente).  People who use drugs are unstable and even aggressive.

David turns Julia's words against her.  She taught him to protect and support the people he cares about – not let them down!  Evidently her thinking has changed...

She tells him she hasn't abandoned her principles; and then she adds with some exasperation:

"Really, David, you've turned deaf and blind."

[The Patio would add "dumb" to the list.]

"After everything you've gone through with Regina, you don't see the reality here.  I hope Daniela gets past this thing (ese rollo) with drugs, but honestly, I doubt she will.   To love another person, you have to start with yourself – Daniela has to start by loving herself.  And if she's harming herself, I don't think she loves you.  She can't.  Think about it."

Julia kisses her son on the cheek and leaves.

I'm worried about his influence on my daughter!

Now Arturo and Nina are left alone to hash things out.  He is convinced that David is a bad influence on Daniela, that he is only with her to get back at Regina, and that in fact, he's the one feeding her drugs.

Nina argues that David is standing by their daughter: if he breaks up with her now, Daniela is likely to get depressed and sink further into the world of drugs.  Besides, it was Ashmore who was supplying (surtía) the drugs, not David.  Let Arturo ask Julia about David – she raised him, right?  She should know about her son.  [Ironic, huh?  You raised the chimp, Nina.  What can you tell us about him?]

Exit Nina.  Enter Agustín.  Arturo asks him to investigate Ashmore: has he had any run-ins with the law because of drugs or fraud?  Why?  Because the Ash has betrayed their confidence and Arturo is determined to find a way to put him in his place.

As Julia approaches the front desk at GLA, she overhears the receptionist remind Eladio of his appointment with Nina Montenegro that evening.

Like shooting fish in a barrel

As Gaby unlocks the door, Franco stands behind her encircling her waist with his arms.   "I'm so sorry," he oozes.  "I know I haven't shown you enough patience and understanding."  Gaby takes in the flowers and champagne and canapés.  "This is my way of showing you that I love you more than anyone in the world," Franco assures her.  "Do you forgive me?"

Gaby's so easy.  "Yes," she smiles tearfully.  "And I love you too."  They kiss, he gropes, etc.

I'm worried about her influence on my son!

Eladio sees Julia outside his office and invites her to come in.  She turns him down.  She was only at GLA to see David, she says, and she doesn't want to hold him up – she knows he has an appointment with Nina.  (Harrumph!) They've already had the Nina conversation, however, so they move on to another topic: Daniela.  Julia is worried about David's involvement with her.

Eladio assures Julia that their son is very sensible (sensato).  David spoke to him about Daniela and between them, they found her a good therapist.  Now that Julia mentions it, he needs to tell Nina that both he and David are standing by her daughter.

Cash in your chips!

Eladio enters the hospital cafeteria where Nina sits chatting with the two-faced Fanny.  Selling her GM shares would give her enough money to be free of Arturo forever, he tells her.  When he offers to pay her 15% over market value, Fanny gasps with excitement.  She could travel, Eladio says.  She could be happy.  She could start to think about herself...

Regina pulls an all-nighter at GM

She yawns.  The faithful Turtle Boy brings her coffee, cookies, chocolates and flowers.  They kiss.  We yawn.

Act Now!

Fanny urges Nina to snap up the deal.  And Eladio warns her that very soon the Riviera Maya scandal is likely to drive GM prices down.  But Nina doesn't want to be a rich divorcée.  She wants to manage what she owns.  She wants to feel useful.

Which does she want more, Eladio asks her: to feel useful or to feel powerful?  She wants both, she says.
"Why don't you teach me to be like you?"  Eladio smiles approvingly.  He likes the idea.  [Is Nina beginning to earn his respect?]

The night sky over the city turns into day.  Now what?

Poor Gaby has bought into the whole Phony Phranco Baloney

Phony Phranco doesn't care whether they have kids or not – they can always adopt.  All that matters is that the three of them are together: he, she and her apellido.

He has to leave for the office, but there's something she needs to know about her parents' factory...

Whoa!  He called me George!

Regina and her chelonian* shadow present her project to Arturo, finally giving him something to smile about.  "Thanks for helping, George!" he says.

[*Chelonian, belonging or pertaining to the order Chelonia, comprising the turtles.  Hee hee.]

What ABOUT the factory?

Franco says it's not the great business they thought it was.  Gaby's father didn't keep it up-to-date and it's losing lots of clients.

"Should we ask my uncle to help?" asks Gaby timidly.

Franco says that won't be necessary.  He will figure out the best options: restructuring or...

"Or what?"

But Franco doesn't want to get ahead of himself.  And he asks Gaby not to say anything to his father.  He wants to prove to him that he can do things on his own and that he is worthy of her trust.

He flashes his over-whitened teeth at her.  She looks worried, but seems to believe everything he has told her.

"How time flies!  Before you know it, he'll be as good-looking as his daddy."

It's understandable that Consuelo lets Nina's comment slide by [though a loud guffaw is heard on The Patio].  After all, she's finally getting a chance to cuddle her baby.  [The kid seems to be sound asleep, but you take what you can get.]

Consuelo tries to convince Nina that she has been telling the truth about Erick.  But Nina has too many other things on her mind to listen to Consuelo's problems.

As good as Kentucky Fried?

When the exhausted Regina and her Turtle drag themselves back to the mansion, Petra offers them a finger-lickin' good breakfast.  (para chuparse los dedos)

Where's a mugger when you need one?

Franco delivers a maletín stuffed with cash to Humberto as he sits all alone in his Hover chair in the middle of a public park.  [Nurse Martín is in the background chatting with some woman and paying no attention to his cranky charge.]  Right on the spot, the old coot opens the case and lovingly fingers the wads of bills.

As soon as Franco leaves, Humberto calls Arturo to tell him he's ready for them to take that trip to Las Vegas.

Much to Humberto's disappointment, Arturo says he can't get away right now, what with one son in jail and the other in the hospital.

In the eye of the beholder

When Petra comes back to tell them that breakfast is ready, she discovers Regina and Jorge asleep, her head on his chelonian shoulder.  Awwwwwww.  She kisses Regina's head and wishes the two sweet dreams.

Nina walks in on the same scene.  Ewwwwwww!  REGINA!  WHAT'S THE MEANING OF THIS?  Regina startles awake and tells her mother not to be rude to Turtle Boy.  If it weren't for him, she'd still be in her office working.

Humberto swallows his disappointment (he should only choke on it) and feigns sympathy.

He hopes Arturo's troubles are soon resolved and they can travel together as planned.  He has in mind a casual encounter with Julia in Las Vegas.  Arturo does have a conference there in the future... but why doesn't Humberto arrange for him and Julia to meet in Mexico?

"Not here," grumbles Humberto, once the call is over.  "In Las Vegas!  I have to go to Las Vegas!"

Q:  How many psychiatrists does it take to change a light bulb?
A:  Only one, but the light bulb has to really want to change.

The new therapist tells Daniela that it is important for her to acknowledge her addiction.

"It's not an addiction.  I already told you – I can control it with my boyfriend's help.  He loves me, and he brought me here because he's going to support me."

"Did you want to come?"

"That doesn't matter.  I'm here."

The therapist makes it clear:  "For things to change, you have to begin by admitting that you have a drug problem."

Daniela sighs.  "Okay, I know.  But it's not my fault.  I couldn't deal with all the problems in my house, and nobody was paying any attention to me."

"So you think other people are to blame?"

"Yes."

"And you had no small part in it?"

Again, Daniela sighs.  "Okay, I shouldn't have tried drugs.  But it was the only way I could forget everything.  You don't know what it means to want to numb yourself so you don't feel anything."

The therapist shifts the direction of the dialogue now.  "How much do you love yourself, Daniela?"

"I don't know.  A lot."

"Are you sure you appreciate and love yourself and that you know all that you are capable of?"

"I don't know anything!  I'm not like my perfect sister Regina... and that's why my father doesn't love me.  He only loves her!"

The therapist nods sagely.  Paydirt.

You stood up for me!

Jorge thanks Regina for defending him.  He may be the Turtle Boy, but he thinks it's her shell that seems to be cracking gradually...

Love Thyself

The therapist asks Daniela what she likes about herself.  She doesn't know.  She's pretty, but at times she doesn't feel that way; and people stop her in the street and ask for her autograph, but the people who really matter don't love her.

"Maybe you should start by loving yourself," the therapist tells her.

Daniela, now with tears in her eyes, has had enough for one session.  Isn't the hour up?  It is.  But there's homework: She is to make two lists:

1.  All the good things she feels are within her
2.  What she feels she needs to be happy

David is waiting for her in the waiting room.  David has to leave to help his father with the Riviera Maya project.  As soon as the words are out of his mouth, he realizes this is a sensitive topic; but he makes things worse when he adds hastily:

"I'm sure if your dad had left the project to Regina, he wouldn't have lost it."

But Daniela, after an hour of therapy, is a new woman.  She's hurt but she doesn't fly off the handle.  Instead, she acknowledges that Regina is good at her job.  "But we're very different and we each have our worth."

David quickly agrees.  And of course, Dani is very professional at what she does and very brave to tackle her drug problem.  They hug.

Petra is a better person than most of us.  Okay, better than me.

Even though Erick has been a jerk (retemala onda), she tells Consuelo, she bears him no ill will.  Is Consuelo going to visit him at the hospital?

Break bread with him?  Puh-lease.

Julia is happy that things are going well between Gaby and Franco, but she's not quite ready to join them at that dinner Humberto keeps nattering on about.

Thanks, bro!

Franco thanks David for their chat.  It helped him make up with Gaby.  He's just sorry that things are so tense between Eladio and Julia.  David admits that at one point he thought his father might end up with Caridad, but now he realizes that won't happen.  Franco glares at David through narrowed eyes.  David doesn't seem to notice.

I'll give you everything I own!

In Erick's hospital room, Nina gushes over baby pictures to which his father is strikingly indifferent.  Nina notices and is concerned.  Erick tells her he is simply not feeling well.  And by the way, he has taken advantage of his hospitalization to postpone the custody appeal – the baby will be staying with them.

Consuelo enters the room.  Having decided to ignore Arturo's advice, she now offers all her GM shares to Erick if he will agree to forgive Miguel and get him out of jail.

I'll pay whatever it takes!

Arturo shows up in Eladio's office prepared to buy Daniela out of her GLA contract, no matter what it costs.  He is convinced that Dani's problems arose in this work environment.  In fact, David is taking drugs with her.

Eladio refuses.  He doesn't think that's what Daniela wants.

Erick takes umbrage.  Yeah, right.

"You know very well that Miguel hit you because you abused me!" says Consuelo.  But Erick stoutly denies the accusation.  Consuelo is simply wrong.

"You were drunk, Erick, but you knew exactly what you were doing!"

"That's a lie, Consuelo!  What's wrong with you?  You made it up so Miguel would..."

"I would beg you, but I know that money is much more persuasive to you."

Erick says she is wrong.  In fact, he is so offended that even though he was thinking about forgiving Miguel, now she can forget it.

Consuelo can't believe it.  "So you're turning down my shares?  I just hope that some day my son forgives me for choosing you as his father!"

When Consuelo leaves, Nina looks hard at the cruel man in the bed.  "Tell me again to my face that you didn't abuse Consuelo," she says.  "Say it."

Shall I explain it with apples and oranges?

"Number one," says Eladio, "David doesn't do drugs.  And number two, don't blame me.  All I did was give your daughter a job."

But Arturo digs in his heels.  All he knows is that his daughter had no addictions until she started working for Eladio.

Eladio observes that Arturo doesn't know very much about his daughter's life.  Her problems didn't just start recently.  Maybe if he hadn't been so busy running after Julia, he would have noticed what was going on in his family.  If he'd given her enough love, she would never have turned to Eladio or been willing to turn to drugs for an easy way out.  Arturo should be grateful to David for standing by her.  And until Arturo is ready to be reasonable, there won't be any contract negotiation.

"A baby always needs his mother"

Even a very big baby.

Erick denies abusing Consuelo.  Nina tells him that Miguel once offered her all his GM shares if Consuelo could see her baby.

"Did he give them to you?" asks Erick hopefully.

"I didn't accept them," Nina tells him.  "And if I brought the baby to her, it was because a baby always needs his mother."

Erick can't understand Nina's decision:  "Oh ma, only you would do something like that.  You had him where you wanted him – you should have taken advantage of that!"

"Of course not," says Nina, who seems to be edging ever closer to the truth about her eldest son.  "What do you take me for?  And if your pride hadn't been wounded just now, would you really have sold Miguel your forgiveness?"

Erick shrugs.

Let them eat cake!

Eladio tells David about Arturo's visit and his accusations.  David doesn't give a hoot about Arturo's opinion.

Luly and Daniela walk into Eladio's office carrying the homemade cake Dani had promised David the day before.  Dani thanks Eladio for his help.

Arturo calls on Julia

"I have a very serious problem," he tells her, "and I need your help."

Petra deserves a raise.

Not only does she help Regina schlep a humongous suitcase down the stairs, she also gets the Pouty Princess to smile.  Regina is going to stay with Consuelo until Miguel gets out of jail.  She is leaving her turtle in Petra's care.

Daniela and Luly appear on the scene.  Dani makes some snotty remark about Consuelo and Miguel living together.

Everyone gives Petra orders, but she knows how to prioritize: first, the baby; next, the turtle; and finally coffee and buns for Dani and Luly.

Are you kidding me?  MY kid is the one helping YOUR kid!

"I'm here because of my daughter Daniela," Arturo tells Julia.  And then he asks her bluntly:  "Does David use drugs?"

She is aghast.  "What?  Of course not!  He's the one helping your daughter!  He's never needed drugs!"

"I'm sorry.  I had to ask."

"It's okay.  I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but I asked my son to end his relationship with Daniela.  Really, he's not in love with her although he says he is."

Arturo bristles.  "So you admit he's toying with her?"

"No, no, no – I'm not saying that.  Even though he denies it, he's still in love with Regina.  He feels affection for Daniela.  He won't leave her now because he wants to help her."

"I understand.  Please help me find out how she's doing.  She won't let me get near her..."

Julia agrees to help Arturo.  "Count on it."

Yeah, writers, but why are you telling us all this?

David tells Justino not to postpone his wedding because of the Riviera Maya project.  Justino suggests moving the date up so.  That way he'd be free to work on the project full time when construction begins.  He'll talk it over with Clara.

Ah, I get it...

And so it happens that Justino is in the corridor at GLA and overhears Marcos the Boughten Accountant saying this to Phony Phranco:

"Here are all the receipts (comprobantes) for the purchase of don Eladio's shares."

Marcos notices Justino is standing quite close.  He gets so nervous that he drops the papers in his hands.  Franco turns in the direction of Marcos' gaze. "How much did you hear?" he asks Justino. "Nothing," replies Justino.  "Why?"

Franco sends Marcos away.

"You may work for the 'niño David,' Franco tells Justino, " but that's no reason for you to listen to conversations that don't concern you."

"Well you were talking in the hallway, weren't you?   And I'm not deaf," replies Justino.  "And I don't understand why you're so scared."

"It's not fear, it's caution because your little girlfriend works for the competition and my work is confidential.  You can't discuss it with anyone!"

Check out the doctor too!*

[*Lo siento, Dr. Carlos.  I'm not making this up – I'm just a lowly scribe.]

Regina and Arturo are together at the GM offices when Agustín returns with some discouraging news.  Erick has upped the ante by accusing Miguel of attempted murder.   Agustín, Consuelo and Clara can all testify, of course, that Miguel wasn't trying to kill Erick...

Regina interrupts:  "You have to investigate the doctor too!  Osvaldo is a friend of Erick's.  The other day, I went to visit him and I heard them coming to some kind of agreement.  I swear it.  I think Erick is faking or making something up so he can incriminate Miguel."

Homecoming

Eladio stands in the front hall of the Montenegro mansion and looks around him.  "Who'd have thought I'd be back here some twenty years later?" he says to Nina.  He tells her he wants to help Daniela by relieving her of her job responsibilities.  Nina doesn't understand: how can he help her daughter by taking away what she loves doing most of all?

I know what I heard

Arturo asks Regina if she's sure.  She is.  Erick denied it, but that was definitely her impression.  Arturo is going to get to the bottom of it.  Agustín asks what he is thinking of doing about it.  "You'll see."

Time to heal

Eladio clarifies.  He doesn't want to take Dani's job from her; he just wants to give her time to recover – and with no contractual penalties.

Nina is relieved and grateful.  Eladio tells her about Arturo's clumsy attempt to buy his daughter's contract and how he turned him down.  But this is different – it's a chance to help both Daniela and Nina.

Only connect

Ever so chastely, Eladio and Nina join hands.  She thanks him with evident sincerity.  "Con mucho gusto," Eladio replies.  "I'm happy to be able to help Daniela."

At that moment, Julia arrives at the Montenegro home (she tells Petra she has come to talk to Daniela).  She sees them together...

Woo hoo! We're in últimos capítulos, guys!

Thank you sooo much Novela Maven:

Nina, Nina, Hyena, Bo-bena, is finally getting a clue.
Seeing Chimp Boy as he really is. He couldn't lie to her face about the rape.

Oh I was hoping some enterprising criminal would see old 'can't wipe
my own... much less fight off a robber', Humdog and
relieve him of that briefcase which he had open for all the world to see.

At least Dani recognizes she aint the sharpest knife in the drawer
and tries to get by on her looks. Gaby is so pitifully dumb,
she don't even KNOW she is dumb. Poster child for "Dumber than a box of rocks".
She don't know nutin, hell she don't even suspect nutin.

Speaking of..does anybody beside me and her shrink not believe Dani?

Loooove Julia's Homer Simpson 'DOH' moment seeing Eladio in Art's house with Nina.

Thank you Novela Maven!

Kirbo: Gaby & Connie are STUPID!!!!!

Daniela will relapse, just a matter of time! I'm not buying this so-called "new woman" garbage!

I also foresee Purple Lips & Eladio making out since they're going to be a couple!

Franco going to scam dumb Gaby from all of her millions!

Novelamaven..Thanks so much for the recap. I just started reading, but I have to quickly comment that I want Julia's dress. It looks like a white canvas that Monet started to paint on. Those pastel colors look like a watercolor painting. Anyhoo, no matter how dim life is, Juiia always manages to look marvelous..beautiful hair, makeup, and wardrobe. Wow, girl.

Gracias, NovelaMaven. I particularly loved this:

"A baby always needs his mother"

Even a very big baby.

Did Nina even realize the truth in the second line when she said it? That's rhetorical and wasn't meant as a criticism of her.

I was initially surprised that Ape Child didn't leap at getting Consuelo's shares, but his motive for refusing them is clearly the intent to destroy her and Miguel. I was also surprised that Nina didn't take Miguel's because she was so determined from the opening episode that he get nothing but it could be that she is finally starting to see Ape Child for what he is.

I am now wondering whether the thing she was ashamed of in her past and wouldn't even tell Arturo about years ago was that she had been raped. If that is the case, it would be the one thing that would make her disown this selfish, destructive son.

Arturo and Augustin are likely to dig up some dirt on Assmore that they never expected to find. That shouldn't take too long to solve. At least Regina told them what she heard at the hospital, but now being in Ultimos Capitulos (that phrase used to come up when there were only a dozen remaining episodes) things have to happen fairly fast from here on.

Arturo seems to have a memory problem right now, as David and Regina were together for over six months and there was no drug issue. He is over-reacting to Daniela's situation and forgetting that she bailed on therapy before (with Nina's help). All the complications in his life aren't helping this at all.

Daniela's shrink was on the money. Definitely hitting paydirt in more ways than one.

Humberto opening a briefcase of cash in a public park? We all thought him smarter than that. But.... what if those US greenbacks are counterfeit? (Probably not, but I can dream.)

Eladio's offer to Nina could create the run on the shares that he is warning her about. If the general public doesn't give a damn about stuff like family infighting or has learned to dismiss things like this in the gutter press, it won't matter. Also, this could be how he discovers Franco's embezzlement because he might have to dig into company funds to make this purchase.

More later.

Susanlynn: Arturo & Aguie both warned Connie multiple times not to do anything stupid!

What does she do ? Does something stupid by giving up her shares!

Viva Las Vegas. Humbug is like a dog with a bone about going there. the thought of Art and Hum on a road trip just tickles me. I got a kick out of Hum in his suit and baseball cap.

Gaby needs to snap out of it before that smarmy lying liar who lies sells her shoes right out from under her. He may take the pair she is wearing right off her feet. What would be an appropriate anvil for this conniving pretty boy?

Art blaming David is par for the course.Rule #1..always blame someone , anyone else. Never assume any responsibility for anything ever. It's not me ; it's you.

The only person responsible for addiction is oneself. Daniela made that choice. There is no evidence of substance addiction in any other family member.

Since we didn't see Daniela in her high school years we can speculate out the wazoo whether she ran into a drug dealer on campus (an example we've seen in other novelas) or whether she looked for it on her own. She had no interest in anything that could have been a refuge and was too lazy to look for something like the school drama club, art, or anything that required effort. It's not unusual for parents to look outside the child or the family for blame; I witnessed this in my own family. If there is blame to assign to Arturo and Nina it's their failure to notice that Daniela was lazy and had no focus. Nina is responsible for the entitlement attitude and both share blame for failing to teach her the kind of responsibility that Miguel and Regina seem to have picked up on their own. In return Daniela took shameless advantage of being the baby of the family and became Nina's Mini-Me.

She could also have had a learning disability that wasn't identified, like dyslexia.

Her shrink's pronouncement about loving oneself is perhaps the hardest psychological lesson to learn. It is too easily confused with conceit to someone horrified by it. It will confuse Daniela big time because she is equating love with attention gotten by any means. People like her need years of therapy.

So would Gabriela, who witnessed so much familial abuse that she fails to recognize what's happening with Franco.

Wow NovelaMaven, not only do you enrich my Spanish, you also add to my English vocabulary. Doubt that I will have occasion to speak of anyone leaning on a "chelonian shoulder", but the word is now in my kit bag just in case.

Loved this:

Humberto swallows his disappointment (he should choke on it). and

"A Baby Needs His Mother".....Even a very big baby.

Haven't seen this yet, but sounds like the only thing I have to look forward to is Julia's snazzy wardrobe. Oh well, we take what we can.

Thanks NovelaMaven. You always make Friday mornings a treat for me. And I never fail to learn something new as well. A real plus at my creaky and increasingly lazy old age.

AuntyAnn, thank you for yesterday's recap which I just read. It was fantastic - thank you.

NovelaMaven, let's start with the splendid "Of cakes and fakes and folks on the take". Inspired. Very unlike this increasingly insipid cast of characters. Of course, your recap was superb.

"Regina and her chelonian* shadow" was also wonderful but my favorite, which made me laugh out loud was "Q: How many psychiatrists does it take to change a light bulb? A: Only one, but the light bulb has to really want to change". Simple but great.

Regina finally hears (and further shares) something to bring the detestable Erick down. I believe both his parents are suppressing the cold hard truth of exactly who and what their son is. I do not know what the future holds for Erick, but expect it to be bleak indeed - as it should be.

Dani's resentment and jealousy may be at the heart of her issues. Yes, her father should have paid more attention to her whims and wishes and her mother less, but many children have been brought up in similar circumstances and have survived, and often thrived.

My hope is that Dani recovers and that she, Regina and David all come to a place where they can be friends. David's interchanging of the sisters should mean that he does not end up with either but at a place where he can mature. He has a good heart and good intentions but has major growing up to do.

So Franco is going to concoct some story and have Gaby believe he is acting in her best interests. Blech. His conceit is amazing - does he really think he can outsmart Eladio? I thought he was going to arrange for a convenient accident for Hummy. I can't recall - has Franco murdered anyone?

There must be some point for Justino' s place in this story. He will either be the one to reveal Franco or die trying.

I don't much care for any of the leads - Eladio, Julia, Arturo and Nina. I can't imagine where all of this is going to go.

I still love Julia's wardrobe (as you do susanlynn)...

And the babies are adorable.

Happy Friday all!

Diana

Thank you NovelaMaven. This was a joy to read from beginning to end. Also, loved the title that you chose for this episode.

Oh yeah, opening up that briefcase with all that money in public wasn't a smart move. That's how you get yourself mugged. If Hummy goes to Las Vegas it should be fun watching what he does over there. I bet he'll hit the casinos.

I loved your description of the Regina and Jorge scene where they pull an all nighter. It looked to me like he brought her some milk chocolate M&Ms. I'm not impressed. Personally, I prefer the ones with peanuts. But if he really loved her he would brought her some real food. He could have at least brought her a large pepperoni pizza. Speaking about Jorge, what was with the "George" business?

I can't believe it took Regina so long to tell Arturo about her suspicion about Erick. That should have been the first thing she told him when she first saw him.

I'm glad Erick didn't accept the shares. I would have hated it if he had gotten his hands on them.

NM, you just never fail to amaze with your recaps. Insightful and fun on this TGIF morning.

"Art blaming David is par for the course.Rule #1..always blame someone , anyone else. Never assume any responsibility for anything ever. It's not me ; it's you."

Again, Susanlynn, you speak what I was thinking. I see a LOT of Daniela in how Art behaves. She is her father's daughter just as much as Gina. Gina may have gotten his work ethic, but the person who best mirrors how he approaches his relationships and self is Daniela. Always someone else's fault, create scenarios to satisfy your own self that you are always the one in the right, manipulate if you have to and justify it with family or someone being worse than you. Add to that the emphasis Nina put on appearances, using her sexuality for gain, not having to work or be responsible since you could always marry money...recipe for self-destruction. Sure, she's spoiled and as UA brilliantly pointed out, she is not a quick fix in the therapy department, but I do feel for her. She's also a recipe for the type of person who even in therapy could easily slip back into a dangerous back-slide. I think they will go there in this TN.

I'll give it to David, he is genuinely there for Dani in trying to help her. She needs more than that, but hey, it's someone. Strange that at this point, I really don't see he and Gina as a couple. I'm sure it will go there, but it will feel off.

As for Erick---good lord. Nina knows...she KNOWS instinctively she has an idiot for a son, but her allegiance and support of him ran so deep I think there is definitely denial going on. Looks like the comment gods ate a comment I had yesterday, but Erick again put out that bully attitude with Connie's visit . Someone who from youth just pushed and bullied his way around (bet he was a pain in the ass in school--notice the man has no friends just drinking buddies?) and learned there were no consequences because, hey, your parents are rich and they will bail you out no matter what you do. You can literally get away with murder. (Am I leaning to a reveal that he DID kill the Monse?)

Hey, Justino finally has a purpose in this TN??? he will help bring Franco down?

I'm right there with hoping some thug ran up in the park and ran away with Hum's stash. C'mon Artie---I'm not clear, but I thought he knew Eladio helped bail out her father's gambling addiction or that even when they were engaged, her father was a player? if he allows Hum to fall back into gambling, he can REALLY kidd Julia goodbye. Maybe that's where this is going.

I can't with Gaby--talk about someone who needs therapy.

Daisynjay

Sorry-- meant kiss her goodbye (Julia). I'm not use to the sun blaring through the windows in the morning :)

Daisynjay

M&M's? How unoriginal. I prefer almond ones or better yet, the cherry cordial ones. They don't have Godiva or at least Russell Stover in Mexico?

I didn't mention this before but I think that Julia is right that David still loves Regina. In which case hanging with and banging Daniela is a very bad idea.

Was the finale date announced?

NovelaMaven, you dear are incredible

" Q: How many psychiatrists does it take to change a light bulb?
A: Only one, but the light bulb has to really want to change."

Now how in the world did Art end up at Julia's to solve HIS problem with HIS daughter? Equally stupid, she's gonna do it.

Didn't think Nina was stupid till last night. I get denial but at some point you gotta admit the dog poo on your carpet belongs to your dog and it stinks to high heaven.

If watching these trainwrecks is supposed to make us feel better watching people dumber than us, it is not working. That works on humans when there is a measurable intellectual distance. I speak only for myself, but that distance is not measurable. Like watching an earthworm and feeling some superiority thing.

Well, we now have three psychiatrists in this novela, and they all have their work cut out for them! Although I find the subject of psychology fascinating , I could never be a psychiatrist. They spend the whole day listening to people's problems. I do not know how they do it. I have three friends who are psychologists, and they all have their own troubles.

Having worked in a senior high school, I have seen teens from lovely families get involved in drugs and alcohol. Teens are much more influenced by their peers than their parents. Kids who are kept busy with sports and activities and who care about their studies are less likely to do drugs and drink, but nobody is immune in today's culture.

Daisynjay...yes, we often seem to reflect each other. No sun here. Rain predicted with temperatures in the 70s, so it is muggy and dismal today.

I think that these characters need some hobbies. Have we seen anyone do anything except occasionally frolic on the beach? Stress management includes doing activities that one finds fun and relaxing..swimming, playing sports, running ,walking, painting , reading, writing, etc. ...plus not stalking people or being an a$$hat.

I have to say that I have become a George supporter. The guy is so sweet to Reg..totally devoted . He brought her snacks ,and he is standing by her despite her crazy family and her mother's outright hatred. He is a keeper. As for David, he is a nice guy , but yikes...he has been bunnyhopping all over the place with Reg's sister. #creepyweird

NM thanks, delightfully clever as usual!

I think it is easy for those of us on the patio with our big (medium/small!) screen TVs running a video with recaps(!) of every scene in the lives of the Montenegro children.......to blame Nina and Arturo for ignorance of the situations that have developed, but remember, we have all the information they have almost none. (Yes, Arturo knows more, but he is in the dark as to the extent of the problems.) As we see in this novela, parents are often the last to know ANYTHING about the miss deeds of their children. Nina has been a tiger as she realizes that her son is not what he seems. She has threatened to kick Erick out of the house if he truly assaulted Consuelo and told him to go to the hearing like a man when he was accused of Monsie's murder. It is one thing to see the video of, in Erick's case, crimes, and completely another to feel that something isn't right, but have no details. I would imagine most loving parents are reluctant to believe the worst in their children until the facts are in front of them.

Thanks AuntyAnn for yesterday!

I wish Nina wouldn't refer to Jorge as "ese" and show her displeasure so openly, but my interpretation of that sleeping scene in the living room was that she didn't like the impropriety of a young unmarried couple sleeping together in the living room. Remember her disappointment with Regina and David living together before marriage. I'm glad someone is taking a stand for old fashioned values!!!!! I would have said or done the same (more charmingly I hope) in a similar situation.

I must disagree, Sandy.

Nina effectively traded sex and an empty promise of love and family to Arturo in exchange for his social position and lifestyle. She emotionally shortchanged everyone. She was no virgin when she met Arturo, so she can't play that card against Regina now. That was just a smokescreen for her contempt for Jorge's origins and a demonstration of her own insecurity about her own.

Nina has no class.

They fell asleep fully clothed on the couch after working all night, not partially or fully naked in her room. Por favor!

UA, otra vez, "agree to disagree."

Thank You UA.Succinctly put.

Pretty obvious Nina has never been exposed to the dreaded "Studying for Finals" some people are woefully familiar with. At least they were on a nice sofa instead of slumped across a library table.

NovelaMaven,

Yet again you manage to blow me away with your wit, cleverness, and dominance of the English language, but I am also detecting a hint of wicked slyness in your essays. Always a great pleasure. For some reason I found this particular amusing:

"But I think she's only saying that because she's a narcissist."

Thanks.

Also hilarious:

"They've already had the Nina conversation..."

"They kiss. We yawn."

"All that matters is that the three of them are together: he, she and her apellido."

I enjoyed that you gave us this:

"Whatever," says David. (Como sea.)"

I wonder if Mexican parents are as annoyed by como sea as US parents are by the English version?

UA,

"The only person responsible for addiction is oneself."

An interesting statement but do you think that you might be oversimplifying?

and I respectfully disagree with this:

"Daniela took shameless advantage of being the baby of the family..."

I think that Daniela was woefully neglected by her parents and siblings and has desperately spent her life trying to simply gain some sort of recognition and validation.

Carlos

UA,

"She was no virgin when she met Arturo..."

How do you know this?

Carlos

Wonderful recap!

Some things I found interesting and may be thinking way too deep about:

When Connie offered Erick the shares I thought Nina was impressed. Miguel offered all of his shares just for Connie to see the baby and now Connie has offered all of her's so Miguel can be free. I think Nina is impressed by the love that they are showing for each other and what they are willing to give up. I think it really is working on a positive nerve with her.

Second, when Julia told Art that David felt "carino" for Dani but still loved Regina. I'm thinking she is describing herself perfectly. She feel affection for Art, because of their past, but loves Eladio.

So many secrets to be discovered I fear they won't all come out. Glad Regina told Art and Augie about Erick and the doc. Now I hope Justino tells Eladio or David about all he knows. After all, he'll be fired in a heartbeat if Franco takes over.

Jorge and Regina are boring but Jorge has been an exceptional boyfriend and a really good guy. She could do a lot worse and he deserves better.

Urban: Your idea that Nina might have been raped in her past is a good thought. I wonder if we will find out. Could Erick not be Art's but her rapist's? Maybe she fell into marriage quickly after finding out she was pregnant which is why she is so hard on Art about Erick? Subconsciously she is worried that Art knows the truth? This is me going on a blind bender again!

Also, Eladio buying Nina's shares could bring Franco's stealing into light. He will have to come up with a lot of cash, on top of what he has to come up with for the Maya Rivera project.

I can't believe Franco gave Hummy the money! I think the shoe factory has been sold because Franco wouldn't have given him in the money in advance. Franco is now just setting Gaby up for the loss. Her knowing anything before the sale may have caused it to be stopped.

The funny thing is how concerned Gaby looked when she took the news. Her husband can't run a huge shoe factory business and do all that he does for Eladio and be home while she lays in bed moping. Gaby should have said "either you quit working for Eladio and takeover my father's business or we hire someone from the outside to run it". She isn't suppose to be stupid but gosh is she!!

UA,

"She emotionally shortchanged everyone."

And I suggest that if anyone was emotionally shortchanged it was Nina. Arturo has admitted as much.

Carlos

Validation can't come from the negative, Carlos.

Daniela went in with Erick and Nina to harass and torture Miguel, thereby getting their approval. All that did to Miguel was get him to withdraw rather than engage. Makes me wonder whether he went away to college to get away from them. I don't think Regina did or there wouldn't be a track record of Daniela going after her boyfriends, actual or potential.

As to the addiction statement, people still make the choice. In my youth so much less was known about this and kids were easily lured into drugs. More is known now and the drugs are more potent and therefore more dangerous. Daniela is still choosing to deny that she has a problem. If she sees this shrink again I hope he asks her why she tortures two of her siblings and why she kept throwing herself at her sister's men.

Oh, and to whomever said yesterday that she admired Daniela's announcing in advance "I'm gonna steal your man," I have to shake my head. The advance gloating is just as despicable as the action that achieves the goal.

Carlos, maybe by her family of origin, which is why she is the way she is. However, I am beginning to doubt that we will hear that information at this late date.

My new favorite expression..."como sea." My young Dominican students greet each other with "Quo lo que."

UA,

No, I meant that she was emotionally shortchanged by Arturo and that he has admitted that.

and

"Validation can't come from the negative..."

What does that even mean?

"...the drugs are more potent and therefore more dangerous."

Cocaine and heroin are the same drugs now as they were when they were first introduced.

Carlos

Regina STILL hasn't told Arturo & Nina about Dani's hotel incident so it's not surprising she's just now getting around to telling Arturo & Agustin about Erick & the shady doctor.

Unlike her siblings, Dani didn't have anything outside of herself to feel good about:

Miguel was smart and into computers;

Erick was being groomed to take over Grupo Montenegro;

Regina was smart and applied herself in architecture

Dani was not smart* and didn't have anything else going for her except being pretty & having lots of boys flock to her, which is all Nina required of her because being pretty & seductive is how you get a wealthy man to marry & take care of you.

But we've seen that Dani is a good model and she likes to cook. Perhaps this is a skill she can develop and lean on when the beauty fades, if she survives that long.

Daniela needs to discover what's special about her, outside of her family & David. Dani responds better to David & Eladio because they actually care about her as a person...well IMO Eladio cares more about Dani as a person than her own family does. Dani deep down knows this and that's why she responds better to David & Eladio.

I loved Eladio reading Arturo for being so bad a father he doesn't know what his children are about. Eladio might not be the best father but he knows David's not on drugs, Nina knows David's not on drugs, Julia knows David's not on drugs. If David was this big druggie why isn't Regina on drugs? Arturo took his DAVID IS ON DRUGS show on the road and got cancelled at every turn.

*Daniela is much more intelligent than Erick. If Arturo & Nina had been aware parents, they would have known that and could've steered Daniela in a more productive direction.

Ohuh.."que lo que"..thanks autocorrect...como sea. I think that we finally have the perfect catch phrase for this novela.

I still cannot figure out how it all will end. I do not want Reg and Davy back together. The whole bunnyhopping with sister thing....no. I like George . He is kind and hopelessly devoted to Reg. They are both hard workers and understand each other's careers. You had me at M&Ms , George. Some ladies like bad boys, but I prefer the sweet boys. Real men are kind , caring, empathetic, responsible. David is a good person who will support Dani, but I do not think that he loves her. She was a fun date, but the drug problem surprised (why?) Him. Does he not remember finding her in that hotel room with the passed out dude?

Franky needs to be stopped . He thinks that he is so smart , and he is too good-looking for his own good. Arrogant little boy. Despierta, Eladio, and smell the betrayal.

Susanlynn: My Bold Prediction is that Regina will likely be the LAST Montenegro left standing when all the chaos is done!

Steve..maybe. I have no predictions.

I would be willing to bet that JorgeGeorge would never fall under Dani's spell.

♥Susanlynn,

I forgot to mention how much this managed to crack me up:

"Gaby needs to snap out of it before that smarmy lying liar who lies sells her shoes right out from under her."

Unfortunately it appears that he's already done just that.

Carlos

"She is leaving her turtle in Petra's care."

Who could ever have anticipated this back when Jorge gave her the turtle? I guess Petra should be grateful that it wasn't a pig.

Carlos

Good morning everyone!

Urban, I haven't heard the final date announced yet.

Thanks to all for your kind words and interesting comments. There's quite a range of opinion around here, isn't there? Well I normally don't get too dogmatic or opinionated in the comments because I figure the recap is my bully pulpit, I'm going to share with you what I thought were the most interesting developments last night:

1. The nascent connection between Eladio and Nina, one based on dawning mutual respect. These two could actually end up as friends. Eladio is teaching Nina to be an adult woman who can do more than seduce with her looks. When we met her, she was like another child in the Montenegro household. Now she is talking about "being useful" as well as having power that is unrelated to her sexual appeal.

2. The likelihood that Erick will be exposed as a faker, which would free Miguel to be with Connie and allow Connie to get her baby back. It would also help to free Nina from acting on her worst impulses in defense of Erick.

3. The fact that Justino now has everything necessary to blow Franco out of the water: he knows about the other woman and baby and he knows that Franco is up to no good in the office, though he may not be able to connect all the dots.

It's getting interesting!

Carlos...You know me. Pretty is as pretty does.No matter how handsome a guy is if he is an a$$hat , he holds no attraction for me. I guess that the other shoe(S) have fallen since Frankfurter handed that briefcase full of cash to Horrible Humbug . This is what happens when you do not look out for yourself and trust someone else with your resources . Gaby needs to take charge of her life and stop being a puppet . I need someone to wipe the smirk off Pretty Boy's facade!.

OT..My book boyfriend was on The Late Late Show last night . Now there is a sweet guy...it seems.

We don't know that Nina wasn't a virgin when she met/married Arturo. She probably wasn't but the only partner we know for SURE that wasn't a virgin when Nina/Arturo got married was Arturo.

Julia wasn't a virgin when she got married either, so...

I also can appreciate Daniela saying straight up "I'm taking your man." That's a much more refreshing approach than say, Julia, who weeps and plays damsel in distress or Marintia, who grins in Gaby's face while plotting to snatch her man. Or Caridad, who pretended to care about Julia while simutaneously sliding up to Eladio. Or Nina, who wants to be Eladio's apprentice.

Daniela just straight up said, "I'm taking your man". No guessing where she stands. That's refreshing. And the funny thing about that is Daniela didn't have to "take" Regina's man, Regina threw David away with both hands.

Anon, Daniela was still trying before the issues with the parents came up. That is not admirable.

And I don't think she actually loves David any more than she ever would have loved Joshua. She is incapable. It was always about vexing Regina and I can't fault Regina for wanting all that to stop. This is where she is seeking validation.

As to the virginity issue, I don't fault anyone for prior experience (which I'm all in favor of), just for hypocrisy. Nina was being hypocritical when she scolded Regina and Jorge. She was just looking to throw dirt on him for not being To The Manor Born. It certainly takes one to know one.

Before it gets to late (ultimos capitulos), I want to say how much I appreciated all the recaps and comments for the last few weeks. I've fallen behind watching, due to flying solo on Un Camino Hacia el Destino, but I've read everything you folks put up.

NovelaMaven, your recaps always delight, refresh and charge up my system, then, when I finish one, I'm always glad it's THEIR family and not MINE. What a bunch of screwed up folks and the brilliance of the writers for weaving this web of lies, deceit, cruelty, power--but somewhat lacking in passion (IMHO).

Kudos to all of you.

Nina doesn't need to scold Jorge on his sexuality to drive home the point he's not to the Manor Born; she's done that several times already.

I don't think Nina would be approving if Daniela & David decided to live together either, and it's probably not for any purity reasons, it's for the reason of why should the man buy the cow if he gets the milk for free reasons.

Nina doesn't want Regina giving her milk to Jorge for any reason; her milk needs to be poured out for someone with wealth & status, which Jorge doesn't have.

If ALL Daniela is about is taking Regina's men, we should see Dani making moves on Jorge soon, shouldn't we?

Justino & Clara have both had information that could shut down several other characters but they haven't shared it with anyone yet:

Clara saw Angeles lurking & spying on the Montenegros

Clara knows about Marintia, the baby and Caridad's role in all of it

Justino knows about Franco & Marcos making shady deals & that Gaby is connected.

I predict Justino will tell David what he knows and David will runteldat to Eladio.

NovelaMaven,

"Check out the doctor too!"

As for Dr. Osvaldo, I'm withholding condemnation until it's demonstrated that he has actually done something illegal or unethical in helping Erick in a deception. I admit that it's suspicious that he has coached Erick about exaggerating his symptoms but I think he is just not want to alienate his friend who has shown him generosity (the loaned condo) even prior to the beating. He has essentially turned down Erick's offer to enrich him...

From Tuesday:

Erick: For sure if you help me with this I’ll return the favor like you have no idea.

Dr.: I’m not going to have to lie, Erick.

Erick: What happened? You’re rejecting me?

Dr.: No, it’s not that, It’s that you really are injured (mal). You suffered a cerebral concussion.

I think that he is genuinely concerned for Erick's well-being and wants time to check him out. Now I could certainly be wrong about him and if I am, I'll be the first to call for his exposure and punishment.

Carlos

To all you armchair shrinks hammering away at your keyboards, may I respectfully remind you all of what M. Scott Peck author of 'The Road Les Traveled', and 'People of the Lie', said which I take for almost true.

"As a child you are 0% responsible for what your parents do to you. As an adult you have 100% responsibility for fixing it."

There can be an argument made, that as far as she is emotionally, Dani may truly believe she loves David now. She certainly is looking to him as her lifeline. But truthfully, with the dysfunction she has experienced, the side lessons taught on how to get a man, and the fact she isn't sure she even likes, let alone loves, herself, she may not be in a place where she recognize real, adult long-lasting love.

I agree, this TN can go in a whole lot of directions with the couples: total cliche and we get the couples that were being sold at the start (which would be soooo bogus) or blow them all of the water from except for the maybe Justino/Clara. Heck, even those two, who knows. Franco could do one of them in as a last ditch effort to hold his secrets. Personally, I hope we don't get the cliche predictable pairings because most right now seem off or down-right wrong. Heck, I was watching Connie and Auggie the other day and thought, you know, they look pretty good together. There's an opportunity missed.

I agree, Gina seems better suited to Jorge. David was like the cute quarterback that the smart, supposedly non-beautiful girl would love to land...but maybe not have all that much in common with when push comes to shove. If she was willing to freak over what the parents were doing, how do they get past the sibling dating? And if the fathers continue to battle to the point of destruction, how do those two work. To me, that boat has sailed, but then this is a TN.

Then there is the off the wall option which everyone makes friends at the end. After some tragedy, pick any number of options, Artie and Eladio bury the hatchet (maybe in Franco's head), join companies and everyone now can pair off and be happy. Totally the TN Pink Bow version which will all make us want to hurl things at our TV's.

Daisynjay

Other than her husband, in a failing marriage, and obviou office wear misdemeanor, who has Nina tried to seduce with her looks? She has stayed right on the farm as long as I can remember.

"As a child you are 0% responsible for what your parents do to you. As an adult you have 100% responsibility for fixing it."

Good one.

David and Miguel know this. Regina mostly knows this. Franco, Erick, and Daniela do not although of the three Daniela has the best chance of fixing it. Onlt if she keeps seeing the shrink.

My vote is for Auggy and Connie. They are more suited to another than a Turtle and Hamster for sure.

one another

You did it again, NovelaMaven! Thank you for an exquisite recap! Está para chuparse los dedos.

I know the Montenegro men suffer from hereditary ADD but why is Arturo running all around town telling anyone who would listen than David is his daughter's drug pusher? Helloooooo! Didn't Ashmore tell you he boinked your daughter and gave her drugs? I'm shaking my head so much I'm getting dizzy.

As for Julia giving her dumb sisterfudging son advice about defining his feelings, what can I say? el chiste se cuenta solo. The joke tells itself.

Thank Crunchie for Humberto zooming around and sowing mischief! The crafty rat bastard always puts a smile on my face! :D

I haven't shared these for a while but I enjoyed seeing Eladio read Arturo for filth.

-- A quote from the capítulo --

“[...] si no te hubieras dedicado a perseguir a mi mujer, hubieras estado atento a tu familia y te hubieras dado cuenta.” *

* Eladio dishing out some hard truths to the delusional holier-than-thou Father of the Year: “[...] if you hadn’t dedicated yourself to pursuing my wife, you would have paid attention to your family and you would have realized [that your daughter had a problem].”

perseguir= to pursue, to chase after.

atento(a) = attentive, thoughtful, courteous.

estar atento a (alguien o algo) = to pay attention to (someone or something).

darse cuenta = to realize, to be aware.

Ow....burn.

Maybe the writers will give us a surprise ending...Eladio, Julia, Art, Nina...Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice....besties..double dating, playing bridge, doubles tennis, going on cruises together .

That's what I have been saying for those who think that Daniela is the villain here and dani knew that Regina was stupid enough to throw David into her hands

Olise

A NovelaMaven recap is ALWAYS a great way to start out the day.
The chimp beater caught my eye as did Humberto swallows his disappointment--he should only choke on it.

They need to check out the doctor. sorry Carlos---I'm just a lowly scribe.

A baby needs his mother, even a very big baby.

No one caught this but I loved it---The therapist nods sagely. Paydirt.

Regina is leaving her turtle in Petra's care. I ask--Would that be the small turtle or the big one?

Urban---Was Nina raped years ago? I had never suspected that but it's starting to make sense when we see Nina's changing attitude towards her beloved chimp boy. This whole Consuelo rape accusation might just be the thing to finally open Nina's closed eyes towards Erick, her pride and joy.

I feel that Art blaming David for getting Daniela on drugs is a natural reaction. We see it every day. Not my son, not my daughter, they couldn't possibly do thaaat!
It is natural that parents wouldn't think that their own would go down the wrong path and when it is proven that they have, well it's natural to blame someone or others for their loved ones downfall. Yes, David did it. I know that he was giving Daniela drugs is a natural parents reaction plain and simple.

Daisynjay---Me too. This morning I started thinking that Erick really did kill the Ratt. It is all beginning to make sense. The bruja's eyes need to finally be opened and what better way to do that is through a rape and a murder? Until now I was on the fence concerning the Ratt's demise but now I'm thinking that it is Chimp Boy all the way. Bruja Nina will be the next one checking into therapy.

must see tv
the gringo

Someone mentioned Eladio's growing respect for Nina because she doesn't just want to be rich, but useful. Isn't this what Julia wanted when she took the real estate job and Eladio was against it? Primarily, against it because she would no longer depend on him. I just find it interesting how our views on people can be so different based on what we want from them.

-- Gringo: I understand your point about Arturo looking for someone to blame because of the whole parental denial thing: My baby isn't capable of doing such a horrid thing etc. However, Arturo ALREADY had someone to blame and that someone was Ashmore! Ashmore went to Grupo Montenegro and told Art that he had sexual relations with Dani and gave her drugs. Why is Arturo adamant on blaming David?

As for Erick and Montserrat's murder, I can't for the life of me fathom where doubts of his culpability came from when the writers of this show revealed many many many episodes ago that Chimp Boy is his lover's killer! Considering his long list of crimes, I would like to see one tiny indication that Erick isn't dumb enough, violent enough, arrogant enough and reckless enough to commit murder (accidental or otherwise). I would really like it if those who doubt what the writers of this show told us unambiguously and insist on clamoring for Erick's innocence, to please show me one measly redemptive quality, one teensy-weensy shred of evidence that Chimp Boy is above committing murder!
Erick killed Montserrat. He confessed it. He had a false alibi provided by Consuelo. A witness saw him commit that murder. The silence of that witness was bought off by Arturo. Arturo asked the witness, verbatim: "No tiene que reconocer al hombre que mató a Montserrat Moret." ("You do not have to recognize the man who killed Montserrat Moret"). This was in Episode 87 (Episode 70 in the Univision broadcast), if anybody wishes to go and double-check.

And I totally agree with you that Nina could use some therapy. Heck, the entire cast of PyP characters needs bootcamp-style, 5-days-a-week therapy. :)

Don't forget about Aldo, who was the last person to see the Ratt alive during the party!

We haven't seen the last of time even though he's in Spain!

Gringo, I'm speculating there.

One of the things that we've all commented on from the beginning is Nina's outdated attitudes about men, women, and marriage:

-- She sees marrying money as the ultimate female achievement, totally discounting Regina's degree and career
-- She thinks that Arturo's entire fortune should go only to Erick. She seems to forget that Arturo inherited it all because he was an only child
-- No higher education for herself (although Arturo wouldn't have stopped her if she had wanted it) and no concern that Daniela didn't finish college.

She is embarrassed at having been born to poverty, which Arturo never held against her. However, there is also something "shameful" in her past she hasn't revealed despite 25 years of marriage. It would be very consistent with all of the other things to feel shame at having been raped in her youth. That was a 1950s attitude. If we take into account that we have never met any of her family of origin we can speculate that she was raped by a relative and the rest of the family dismissed what happened to her as "nothing serious" or as even having been her fault. Possibly they hushed it up to avoid being gossipped about.

That is the worse-case scenario. The other is that she was raped by a stranger, a classmate, or a guy her parents didn't approve of and they treated her like damaged goods thereafter.

In either case, I could see her getting out as soon as she was 18 and never looking back. Maybe she even changed her name.

To me this would be the most logical explanation for her threat.

Someone made the comment a few days ago about how Consuelo could possibly have had relations with Miguel a few days after the rape. The simple answer is that she was not a virgin and she had been waiting for Miguel for a while. She may also realize on the unconscious level that Erick did this deliberately to intimidate her. For some women in her situation it is how they protect and defend their sexuality, since many rapists like the idea of destroying it.

gringo, you are right in that it does appear Nina would consider a woman's violation as unforgiveable. I feel there is something in her past that deeply affected her. No spoiler. There was a bit of speculation here early on that Nina might have had a child and given her/him up for adoption - again, pure conjecture. We will find out soon enough.

Carvivlie, excellent point about Eladio's respect toward Nina. I guess it isn't transferrable to Julia in that his life and his pursuits should be enough for Julia. I think he's softened a bit but...

Diana

UA, our comments crossed.

I agree with your speculation on Nina, particularly "However, there is also something "shameful" in her past she hasn't revealed despite 25 years of marriage. It would be very consistent with all of the other things to feel shame at having been raped in her youth".

Diana

-- Steve: We may or may not agree with how the writers solved the Monserrat whodunnit but they have already pinpointed the murderer and moved beyond this point to explore its ramifications, such as Arturo paying the key witness, Erick avoiding jail and sowing the mayhem that we are now witnessing: the baby's kidnapping, the custody battle, Consuelo's rape, Miguel's accusation of attempted murder. Not to mention the disaster of the Rivera Maya project and the money and jewelry Erick received as ransom for kidnapping his own baby.

Olise, I think you’ve posted before, but welcome if this is your first post.

Gringo, looking forward to our drinks with Carlos at Frida Restaurant. Could you, just for this one evening call Nina..... Nina and not Bruja Nina? I now think Bruja goes with every Nina, even the one on “The Americans.” If you’ll do that, I’ll buy the first round!

Daisy, “Personally, I hope we don't get the cliche predictable pairings because most right now seem off or down-right wrong. Heck, I was watching Connie and Auggie the other day and thought, you know, they look pretty good together. There's an opportunity missed.” I agree and I’ve been thinking about that myself! Of course, telenovela rules, David and Regina are in the opening credits, will the old rules apply? Please no, no, no. Will the writers kill off Dani to make this happen? Are we getting that vibe? If so, I plan to use my weak, stupid Twitter account to protest to the high heavens!!!! (At least one’s Spanish doesn’t need to be perfect or even good in this medium!)

I just cannot see Arturo and Julia together, the bloom is already off that rose. I’m going with my previous prediction of Arturo in a facility of some type with faithful Nina at his side. I’ll add that she, using the tutelage of Eladio, has managed all the activities of the company during his illness. Again, Julia, años despues, meets Eladio at a condo closing and they smile and walk in hand into a cafe...(add your own ending) Los demas, no mi importa.

Nandicta, I never said he was completely incapable. I said he had no motive. Eladio had the motive, the cold blood, and the bigger wallet to bribe a witness with.

I agree that Erick isn't intelligent enough to plan a murder that couldn't ultimately be pinned on him. If while he is still free as a bird he finds out that Franco hired the guy who cut his brakes he would definitely go after him at breakneck speed and screw it up in the process.

What I am saying is that he lied about what happened on the balcony. Either he saw Eladio or Callao do the crime and was scared into silence or he killed her on impulse and lied about it having been an accident. As he described it to Nina it sounded like an accident. He went into a coma a few minutes after telling her. She believed every word and would have been the first to relate this to Arturo. And no parent (except maybe a drug kingpin) ever wants to believe their child could commit murder.

UA,

"One of the things that we've all commented on from the beginning is Nina's outdated attitudes..."

Well... perhaps not quite all of us.

"However, there is also something "shameful" in her past..."

I'm not disputing this and I know that there are things in her past that haven't been revealed, but I don't recall having learned that they were particularly shameful. Did I miss something?

Carlos

Carlos, I don't remember the episode number but there was a conversation between Nina and Arturo (a long while back) in which he mentioned that there was something she never told him about out of shame. All he seemed to know of her past was that she was born to poverty. That never went anywhere for some reason.

Carvivlie, I did once speculate that Nina might have had a baby she gave up for adoption before having met Arturo and -- per TN track record -- for her to never have told him wouldn't be unusual. That's because we don't know Clara's origins and I was looking for a reason for Clara to be in the story. However, she seems younger than Erick, so that isn't likely.

As for whether Erick is the theoretical rapist's child and not Arturo's, that's interesting but I don't think Nina was pregnant at the altar. For that to be the case Arturo would have had to have been seeing her for only a few weeks before marrying her and I think he knew her longer than that. If she had been pregnant on the NYC wedding day and giving birth at 7 months I'm sure we'd have heard that in the conversation about Arturo's father and the post-nup document.

-- UA: What we know for sure is that Erick killed Montserrat. Whether he did it on impulse (he was drunk off his rocker and had no qualms about violently pushing his petite pregnant wife to the ground earlier that night) or whether it was an accident (as he confessed to his mother), is something we might never know for sure. However, judging from his violence towards Consuelo and his obsession with snatching her back from Miguel at any cost, I personally would speculate that he pushed Montserrat on purpose, in a moment of jealous rage. However, this is my own personal speculation because I feel that someone who acts in such a despicable manner towards his old "woman-toy" that he never liked anyway, is capable of being much more ruthless when faced with the prospect of losing a "woman-toy" he actually wants/loves.

As for Erick being scared of Eladio, I'm sorry, but the mere thought makes me laugh! We are talking about the same Chimp Boy who confronted Eladio several times and once even threatened to beat him up for "killing my Montse". More importantly, this is the same reckless clueless ape that bragged to the criminals locked with him in the same cell that his shirt was worth more than their lives! Self-preservation isn't Chimp Boy's forte que digamos! If Erick had just a smidgen of fear in him, he wouldn't have stupidly provoked his rough-looking cellmates and he wouldn't have planned his own baby's abduction so soon after escaping jail for Montserrat's murder. Let's face it, the guy is a violent reckless imp with delusions of grandeur and the IQ of a banana peel!

-- Carlos and UA: I do remember that conversation where Nina briefly mentioned that there was something in her past that she was ashamed of but we could chalk it down to poverty since the writers seem to have dropped that thread. There was also a conversation between Nina and Fanny waaaay back where Fanny mentioned that Nina was dating a pobretón, some poor devil that she knew before Arturo emerged in her life, but this thread was also abandoned by the writers. This conversation took place in the garden and it was around the time of the triple episodes. I never saw it mentioned in the recaps or comments, so I assumed the scene wound up on Univision's cutting room floor.

I certainly agree about his IQ. Still, he has a sense of entitlement that he's bulletproof because he comes from money, which this latest medical thing is payback for. No amount of money can fix the inevitable, if that's what's waiting for him.

As to Eladio, we haven't seen them interact for a while (no reason for them to) so who knows? What was that cryptic conversation between him and Callao in that episode? He also still has hidden secrets. If they saw Erick actually exterminate the Rat you'd think they would have used this against him and Arturo long before this.

As to the full truth, when I look at the secrets list I realize that this series could leave multiple unanswered questions, which annoys me a bit. YNCELH didn't show us Ursula's Karmageddon so we can't be sure what happened to her. I hope that isn't a direction that Televisa writers will take for the future.

Sandy---Ok you win just for this once but I have to admit that every time I see that angry, daring you cross the line with me and you will wish that you hadn't face on Nina, it sends me past the moon because it is a bruja look punto. But tomorrow no Nina bruja's---after that, well I can't promise.

Thanks gringo, first round of Frida drinks on me!

gringo,

From UA's recap of Tuesday's episode:

"Nina was playing with the baby when Arturo brought Daniela back."

UA is generally very descriptive and yet she really didn't capture the tender loving tableau of a doting grandmother cooing her lavish affection to her clearly adored (not to mention adorable) grandson. Do you recall that scene? Did that look like the countenance of a bruja to you?

Carlos

A few more thoughts triggered by your comments –

Sandy, I understand that Nina seems to have been faithful in her marriage. Nevertheless, we saw how she first approached Eladio and tried to bowl him over with her sex appeal. (He wasn't at all receptive, as it happens.) In that sense, she has been 'seductive,' and not in a literal sense.

Carlos, you are right that Dr. Osvaldo saw something – evidence of a concussion that was particularly worrying given his history – on the images of Erick's brain; and it was sufficiently alarming to order him to remain under observation for at least 24 hours. But the good doctor does seem to have gone along for the ride when Erick faked just about every possible problem (except sudden death). I guess we'll have to wait and see what Osvaldo has to say when we see Arturo put the screws to him, as he is likely to do.

Carvivlie, I think Julia took the real estate job because she wanted to be independent. She was already 'useful' in her work at the Foundation, arguably a lot more useful than she is selling real estate. And it is the idea of her independence that scared Eladio. In the case of Nina, her desire for independence is no threat to him. As for wanting to be useful, why not see that as admirable? He already admires that in Julia.

Urban, I'm not sure a woman must experience the personal horror of rape in order to see it as the ultimate abomination. I'm quite ready to believe that it would be the last straw for Nina to learn that Erick had violated Consuelo, even without a backstory of a nightmare experience of her own.

As for Erick's guilt in the murder of Montserrat, I have no reason to doubt it. In fact, the police found forensic evidence that given the trajectory of her fall, she had to have been pushed from the balcony and it could not have been an accident. I think it's possible that Erick really remembered it as an accident. After all, memory is a tricky thing and often self-serving.

NovelaMaven,

"...we'll have to wait and see what Osvaldo has to say when we see Arturo put the screws to him..."

I've known and worked with a few neurosurgeons in my time and believe me, the pompous blustering Arturo is no match for any one of them. I think that Osvaldo and Erick are close friends who may have been in the same fraternity in college (Erick referred to him as brother) and thus Osvaldo's indulgence and seeming deference toward Erick.

Carlos

"I've known and worked with a few neurosurgeons in my time and believe me, the pompous blustering Arturo is no match for any one of them."

Carlos, I'm not sure it even matters, but I had the impression that Osvaldo was the médico legista, rather than a neurosurgeon. And the kind of pressure I imagine Arturo using would be a threat to expose his less than ethical stretching of the truth and thus tarnish his reputation unless he revises his report to the court. But as I said, I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Nandicta---You are right about Ashmore, he did tell Arturo. Maybe Arturo at this point is loosing it and can't think straight or remember for that matter. I know that he doesn't like or want Eladio's son messing around with Daniela, especially after he had first dated Regina. So maybe he was just wanting to pin Daniela's problem onto David totally overlooking Ashmore's past involvement with Dani.

Erick's guilt? Yes I agree that he is capable of murder. He has a lot of anger and is impulsive.

Ok, the hospital confession. At the time, it was said by some that Erick had just come out of sedation and may not have been thinking correctly. I thought that this may have been possible. And wasn't Erick pretty drunk at the party? Could he remember clearly?

The witness---You wrote the exact words that were spoken. They're pretty direct but I do not speak Spanish. I was under the impression that the witness saw Erick on the balcony on or about the time of Montse's demise but actually didn't see Erick do it--push her, throw her. I thought that Arturo's payoff was just insurance that no one even saw Erick on or near the balcony at or about the time of death.

Ok---if it is as clear as you say, what did Eladio tell Callao just before Montse died and where did Consuelo go when she left the mansion?
Another good point, why was there no scream on the way down? Was Montse so drunk that she thought that she was flying as someone had suggested? Even if Erick did do it, there still a lot of unanswered questions.

WOW! this novela is really bringing the comments. In my entire novela career I have never seen comments like this, and so well thought out. I can't keep up with them.
I will have to read more this evening, I'm swamped.

I will be stunned if it isnit't revealed Erick as actually pushing Montse in anger over the balcony. Drunk... so what. As we have seen through all his antics since that time, his knee jerk reaction is always to paint the scene where he is not at fault. His blown business dealings, his treatment of Connie, the way he treated his siblings, go on and on. It's the classic bully or spoiked child who instantly cries "they made me do it". I think in his panic, he turned the whole events with Montse as an accident, say it long enough, you believe it. There was SOME evidence, but no eye witness to see an actual push or an argument, so the case could be bought off or pushed aside. I'm just waiting for some flashback to show us how it REALLY went down.

As for no scream from Montse--was she hit in a way to knock her out or slap her hard as she went over? She was probably unconscious as she went over.

"In my entire novela career"

Ay, Gringo, you're so funny! I'm gonna steal this one (with your permission, of course!)

-- Gringo: As regards, the exact words spoken in the car between Eladio and Callao, if memory serves me right, I think it was something along the lines of taking care of something they agreed upon. It was vague and my recollection was that it could apply to chucking Montse out of the apartment Eladio was paying for. When they were on the balcony, Eladio ordered Montse to collect her knick-knack and get the heck out the very next day. Let me go down memory lane and get back to you on this. I think the rodenticide as our dear Mauricio dubbed it, happened either Episode 45 or 46. Gimme a few minutes and I'll be back with the quote.

I'll steal it, too. Ii think two decades and change of viewing puts me in that class.

Carlos, a narcissist like Nina will be attentive to a baby with her DNA. It's when that baby becomes a person who can say "No" that she begins ignoring it.

This is far more likely with a child of the same sex. Once I became a walking, talking child who could say "No" rather than a prop in a frilly dress, my mother had no real use for me.

Nandicta, I vaguely remember that conversation, too. It may have ended up on Univision's cutting room floor, but I would think that Nina would have been smart enough to use contraceptives.

I don't think we ever got an exact timeline of when Arturo and Nina met; all we got was that Miguel was a year old when they got married. Nina struck me as the type who wouldn't want to be pregnant at theh altar or get pregnant immediately after the wedding so I figured that it happened three months into the marriage and Miguel would have been two years old when Erick was born.

The murder was in episode 42.

NM, " Eladio is teaching Nina to be an adult woman who can do more than seduce with her looks." NM, that sentence implies that Nina overly relies on seducing men with her looks. One trip to an office in a low cut dress, by a woman in the middle of a divorce, doesn't mean that Nina has formed a habit of seducing men with her looks. Arturo yes, others no.

(Now you see how much better it is to be a recapper and just stay above the fray, says "dogmatic and opinionated" Sandy, tee hee)

But every dress Nina has worn to Eladio's office qualifies for that description. Let's also add that they looked painted on.

She is still trying. She will have a very hard time when this is no longer possible.

"Nina would have been smart enough to use contraceptives."
They had been invented by then, right?

If my ass were two axe handles wide I would not be wearing aerosol clothing.

UA, almost all female novela characters wear inappropriate clothing to the office. The habit has spread to the US, I look up and there is Norah O'Donnell on CBS Morning News with lace and cutouts at 7AM. What has happened to appropriate office wear? Julia wears seductive clothing as well, and she is no stranger to a wonder bra! You might be correct on Nina's coming behavior as a divorcee, but as a wife and mother, she hasn't made a habit of trying to seduce men with her clothing. (NM's description of being "dogmatic and opinionated" is beginning to weigh me down!!!!!)

-- Gringo and UA: OK, here's the cryptic conversation. It was in Episode 42.

Callao: “¿Todo bien, Patrón?” (“Everything OK, Boss?”)

Eladio: “Todo bien. Qué bueno que me avisaste lo que estaba pasando aquí. Ya comprobé su complicidad. Y algo sí te digo, Callao, Montserrat se va a arrepentir.” (“Everything OK. You did well in notifying me of what was going on here. I confirmed her collusion [with Erick]. And let me tell you something, Callao, Montserrat is going to regret it.”)

Callao: “Pues usted dice, Patrón. Ya sabe que estoy aquí para lo que necesite. A mí no se me olvida que usted salvó la vida de mi hija y ya sabe que por usted hago lo que sea.” (“I’m at your service, Boss. You know that I’m here for whatever you need. I will never forget that you saved my daughter’s life and you already know that, for you, I would do anything.”)

Eladio: > “Quizás sí necesito pedirte algo. Déjame pensar.” (“Maybe I do need to ask you [to do] something. Let me think [about it].”)

I also rewatched the balcony scene between Eladio and Montse, he said that he will come back to the apartment the next day and he'd better not find her there. He ordered her to pack her things because she is being evicted(desalojar) tomorrow. His parting words to her were the classic TN catchphrase "¡Suéltame!" ("Let go of me!") followed by "No te quiero volver a ver" ("I don't want to see you ever again!"). This is what led me to believe that the thing Eladio was going to think about and maybe ask Callao to do, was simply supervise Montse's eviction, since Eladio never wanted to lay eyes on her ever again.

By the way, revisiting these scenes reminded me how much I loved Bad Boy Eladio. These writers ruined a great villain and it's yet another missed opportunity I'll never forgive them for.

Hope this answers your queries.

Cheers, UA. It was indeed Episode 42. I wish I read your comment before.

On painted on clothing, at least our PyP gals aren't wearing painted on yoga pants, that's the rage around here!

Sandy. Here in FloriDuh too. I have even seen a couple guys? in the grocery store wearing them.

Maybe it is just me, but the less likely I am to want to see someone in yoga pants/thick pantyhose, the more likely they are to wear them.

Same thing around here. The old men who should definately wear shirts.....DON'T.

Kirbo, I'm actually happy to see the people who shouldn't be in yoga pants wearing them. It is the perfect, young yoga gals who look wonderful.......that make me go home (in my mom jeans) and cry!!!!!

Awwwww

So glad I'm a guy. No childbirth, no skintight clothes afterward, grey hair is sexy.
If it starts falling out....Cowboy hat.

:-)

We still do NOT know any of Purple Lips' secrets!

Believe me Steve, soon.... When that beyonch figures out that she raised a murdering rapist the floodgates are opening like Niagra Falls. A L L her dark secrets will come boiling out. When she admits to everyone how dirty and unholy she really is, she will hopefully whack herself.

No spoiler, just wishful thinking, Bud.

Im always late to the patio lately, but life happens. NovellaMaven the title you chose is fitting for this episiode. These folk are whacked out if their crazy minds.
I really hope that nina is starting to see the monster she spawned for what "it" Is. Thanks to hers and arturo's steller parenting skills.
See this is why I can't stand arturo. He takes responsibility for none of his mistakes in causing the mess in his messed up childrens lives. Yes they're adults. But this mess started when they were children, nobody was watching and the weeds have taken over the garden. Nina has discovered her precious flowers are ragweeds. Some nasty ones.

How long is it going to take eladio to find out his bastard son is stealing him blind? He should hurry times running out.
Hummy and his hoverround should get chained to an 18 wheeler leaving town. We can only hope.

Ok thats all I got for this episode. Thank you NovellaMaven. Steller recap, you hit it girl.
