Pasión y poder, Episode 98, Thursday, March 3, 2016: Sudden Death, Stolen Babies, Broken Hearts, and Just Plain Malice – and you thought you had problems!

¿Para qué tienes a un niño en una telenovela?
¡Para que lo secuestren, c___!  Para que lo secuestren!
(Why do you have a child in a telenovela?
So he can be kidnaped, fool!  So he can be kidnaped!)
In Rating, by Alberto Barrera Tyszka, p.127.

Death is an affront.  Always.  Even at a distance, death strips us of the illusion of control.  But when death is close enough to chill the air we breathe, it also strips us of our masks.   As we look back at tonight's story, let's pay attention to the naked faces.

Eladio, primed by Arturo's trickery, has arrived at the Gómez Luna mansion prepared to confront Julia.  And so it happens that he takes the call from La Cruz Roja, and announces the dreadful news: Gaby's parents were in a terrible accident and they are both dead.  Everyone is stunned.  Humberto appears genuinely stricken.  Gaby, who only a moment ago was rejecting Julia's overtures and saying her parents and Franco were her only family, now collapses in Eladio's arms.  "Tell me it's not true!" she wails.

Jorge "Turtle Boy" Pérez has won the brass ring.  Yes, he knows Regina still has feelings for David.  Has he, perhaps, fallen in love with an idealized version of her?  No.  Unlike many of us, he can see the goodness in Regina's (incredibly annoying) soul. Yes, he knows that Nina isn't one of his fans.  He's just happy that Arturo is on his side.

David, alarmed by Eladio's earlier display of anger in the office, has followed him home.  Now he hears about his aunt and uncle.

Gaby is infuriated by Humberto's grief.  After the way he treated her mother, he has no right to mourn her now.  She has to find Franco, she says, as she runs out of the room.

Eladio, volunteering to take on the mournful tramites that any death entails, leaves the room.  Julia kneels in front of Humberto's chair.  David joins her.  The three weep together.

Erick and Nina meet with the judge and show him the photos of Miguel and Consuelo.  The judge tells them they will make it easy to rule in Erick's favor, but he will still need proof that Consuelo is not a good mother.  "I'll get it," vows Erick.  He and Nina exchange smirks.  They indulge in a sort of Oedipal High Five – she offers him her hand and he kisses it.  (Anita tells me that Barf bags are flying off the shelves at the P&P Boutique!)

Clara visits Caridad in the vecindad.  Caridad has just agreed to be one of the witnesses in Clara's wedding.  Then she gets a call from the Argentine Mouth Breather: she's getting ready to return to Mexico.  She's just waiting for the doctor's permission.   Meanwhile, she's sending Eladio some photos.

Now back home at the mansion, Nina tells Erick that they just have to wait for the imbécil de Consuelo to make a mistake.  But Erick doesn't want to wait.  (He is an immediate gratification kind of Chimp.)

Petra enters with some papers for Erick – it's a summons to his divorce hearing to be held a few days from now.  He will have to do something to make sure things go his way.

Eladio is going off to identify the bodies. David will be staying with Julia.  Julia doesn't disguise her gratitude for what Eladio is doing.

Gaby has been trying to reach Franco, but so far unsuccessfully.  Finally, he answers his phone. "What is it this time?" he asks nastily.  He is sick of all her "drama."  If this is another jealous scene...  But when she tells him what has happened, the sneer disappears from his face.  (Could there be hope for the soul of Franco Herrera after all?)

Now Caridad approaches Franco to deliver Marintia's news, which is quickly moved to the back page when Franco delivers his jaw-dropping scoop.  (At this point, Franco displays something that resembles normal human emotion, perhaps shock.)

Gaby accepts David's consoling embraces but Humberto's misery continues to infuriate her.  The old man moans his daughter's name – ¡Mi Amanda! ¡Mi hija! – and clutches at his chest.  "SHUT UP, grandpa!  You never cared about her when she was alive!"  Desperately, Humberto tries to explain: that he was angry with her doesn't mean that the death of his daughter doesn't hurt him.  But Gaby just shouts back that she doesn't believe him.  He gasps and his head droops alarmingly to the side.

With some difficulty, Erick has managed to find the very same thug who put him in a coma.  (Hasn't he seen the security video?  The thug is enjoying this.  With a faint smirk, he tells Erick he's been lying low because of a little job that didn't exactly turn out as planned.)  Erick explains that his own wife is the target this time.

According to Nurse Martín, Humberto is now stable.  (Though what does Martín know?)

Franco finally arrives, mumbling a stiff apology to Julia for intruding.  With some effort, he assumes the role of loving spouse.  He takes Gaby in his arms and assures her that he will stand by her, even if all the others are against them.  We see his face over her shoulder.  It registers no emotion at all.  (Hope for the soul of Franco Herrera?  Perhaps not.)

The thug demands more money than Erick was planning to pay because the job is complicated and a kid is involved.  Of course if Erick wants to try his luck with someone else, someone who might not know how to keep his mouth shut...

David comforts his mother. He won't pretend he isn't still upset about a lot of things that have happened, but he wants to be there to support her. "You can't go through life harboring resentment, son," she tells him.  "You never know what might happen.  Imagine how bad your grandfather must be feeling now because of the conflicts he had with my sister."

At Julia's suggestion, David goes off to see Humberto.

Now Julia gets a call from Arturo.  "I need to see you," he says.  She tells him what has happened.  Stunned, he offers words of sympathy.  He wants to be with her.  "I can't talk," Julia says.  She ends the call.

Franco gets huffy because Eladio has gone to identify the bodies.  That was HIS job as Gaby's husband.  (No.  No hope.  Gah.)

"You weren't here!" she says angrily.  "I kept calling and calling..."

Did her parents leave a will?  Who will take over the factory?  Gaby doesn't know – and she definitely doesn't want to talk about that right now.

Back at the GLA offices, Caridad phones Marintia with the news, which the young woman greets callously, even gaily:  Qué triste, pero así es la vida.  (How sad.  But that's life.)  Caridad reproaches her for being so unfeeling.  Marintia laughs out loud: Caridad isn't exactly on moral high ground herself.  But right now, what concerns her is the money she's expecting.  But Caridad hasn't been able to speak to Franco yet.  She'll continue to deposit her own salary in Marintia's account.  She knows it's not enough but...

For reasons unknown, the creepy corrupt reporter from 40 or so episodes back now appears at the door and listens as Caridad continues airing her personal dirty laundry right there at the reception desk:

"I love Franco.  He's my son.  But I also know he's a difficult person.  Let me see what I can do and I'll get back to you."

The reporter immediately phones his paper:  "I have more dirt on Eladio's bastard son!"

Back at the house of mourning, Gaby heads off to call some of her mother's friends.  Franco takes advantage of the moment to call Daniela and fill her in.  He suggests that condolences for David would be in order.  Wink wink.  (Okay.  He is definitely going to hell.)

At GM, Regina learns about Gaby's parents when she overhears Arturo and Agustín talking.

Consuelo and Erick, backed by Agustín and Rueda, respectively, sit before the judge.  Consuelo wants the divorce.  Erick claims he'd stay married for the child's sake if it were up to him.  In answer to the judge's query about possible reconciliation, Consuelo says that's impossible for many reasons, including her husband's infidelity.

Erick now goes on the attack: Consuelo is consorting with his half-brother, the same person who sabotaged the brakes on his car and caused the accident that almost killed him (but sadly, did not).  Consuelo retorts that neither part of the accusation is true.  If Erick could prove his accusation, says the judge, it would be grounds for divorce and removal of the child from his mother's custody.

At GLA, David brushes off Caridad and her words of condolence, condemning them as mere hypocrisy.  He sends her off to find out about funerary niches.

When Daniela approaches him, however, his BS detectors must be jammed because he listens to her words of sympathy as if he believes them.  She hugs him tight.  He hugs back.  His phone sits on the table.  We can see that Regina is trying to call him.

Agustín protests Erick's accusations.  One case has nothing to do with the other.  A child belongs with his mother.

Erick insists that Consuelo is not a good mother because she consistently and foolishly rejects the Montenegro family's help.  Her choice to leave the baby with Clara rather than the child's own grandmother or aunt, for example, puts the child at risk.

At GM, under Ángeles' watchful eye, Regina tells Miguel how bad she feels about David's aunt and uncle and how much she wishes she could be there for him.  (But she can't because she is so incredibly rigid.  Or perhaps that tight ponytail is finally doing a number on her brain.) David isn't answering his phone.  Miguel thinks it might be better if she didn't stir things up by trying to contact him.

At GLA, David thanks Daniela for her kind words.  Once again, she offers her friendship to him.  When she walks away, David glances at his phone.  But now Caridad is back with the information he requested.  Is there anything else? she asks.

David kind of loses his cool.  "What I can't understand is how my father still has you working here after everything that has happened.  It's nothing personal, but I understand why my mother can't forgive him – I wouldn't either."

At the mansion, Eladio tells the family that cremation was the wisest choice.  It's true that they can't have a velorio, but sometimes those just prolong one's pain.   Nobody objects to his decision.  Both Julia and Gaby would like a funeral mass.

Eladio stands with an arm around each woman.  Gaby thanks him and Julia for being like parents to her.  Now Franco approaches the trio and puts his hands on Gaby's shoulder.  Eladio glares at his son.  Franco glares back.

Consuelo and Clara are taking a walk in the park, pushing little Erick in his stroller.  They are suddenly startled to find themselves in the middle of an angry brawl as they try to help a woman repel her assailant. While Consuelo is distracted, Erick's thug swoops up the baby and runs.  Once he has escaped, a second woman pushes in, and then the three strangers run away, the man seemingly in pursuit of the women.

Now Consuelo looks down in the stroller with horror.  The baby is gone!

Erick is back at the Montenegro mansion.  He boasts to his mommy that he has a plan for ending up with the baby.  He has to leave now.  If anyone asks, he says, he was with her all afternoon.  He kisses her cheek.  "Trust me," he says.

Consuelo and Clara run frantically down the pathways of the park.  There's no sign of the baby.

At the Gómez Luna mansion, Humberto has been given a sedative and is now asleep.  Gaby and Julia thank Eladio for everything he has done.  "We wouldn't have had the strength to do it," Gaby tells him.  "You're still the strongest one in the family," Franco tells his father.  The bitterness in what might seem a harmless platitude does not escape Eladio.

Gaby wants to go to church.  Franco offers to accompany her.  Before they leave, Gaby and Julia embrace.  Julia tells her tearfully that this isn't a time for quarreling.  Gaby agrees.

When they leave, Julia thanks Eladio for being so kind to her niece.  Then she remembers to ask why he came to the house in the first place.  He says it was nothing important.  The important thing is that he is there for her, whatever she may need. Then he excuses himself – there are a few things he needs to see to.

Consuelo and Clara report the kidnaping to a cop patrolling the park.  Consuelo realizes the whole thing was a set-up.  Then she calls Miguel and leaves him a message.

Regina and Turtle Boy talk excitedly about attending the Architectural Biennial in Venice.  Then Ángeles gets another eyeful when they kiss right in front of the reception desk while David, who has just arrived, looks on unseen.  He turns around and leaves without saying a word.

When Ángeles asks if Jorge is her boyfriend, Regina answers: "I don't know... I guess so."

As soon as Regina walks away, Ángeles reports to Franco.  He thanks her but says he is more interested in what is happening with Ashmore and the status of the materials they've imported.  She promises to snoop some more but says she is nervous about getting caught.

At the Montenegro mansion, Nina tells Arturo that Fanny saw Consuelo in the park with the baby.  Wasn't the baby too sick to go out?

Arturo is unimpressed.  So the baby is better!  He doesn't want to get drawn into an argument.  But that is exactly what Nina wants.  "Where are you going?" she asks.  He tells her he owes her no explanations.

Humberto has recovered somewhat.  Saying that the family needs to be more unified than ever, Humberto asks Eladio to help him mend fences with Gaby.  After all, his estrangement from his daughter wasn't deliberate.  He couldn't bear it if the family were to break apart.  "It's not in my hands," Eladio replies, glancing at Julia.  "I'm not the one who can decide that right now."

Eladio leaves father and daughter alone.  Humberto turns to Julia:  "And even now – when you see how fragile life is – you still won't forgive him?  One must forgive..."

Oh, Nina is getting mad.  "WHERE ARE YOU GOING?!!! To offer your condolences to your lover?  Before or after you make love?"  She lets loose a string of insults, her volume and pitch rising.  Finally, Arturo loses control.  He bellows something  bleepable followed by a resounding SHUT UP!!!

At GM, Miguel checks his phone, listens to Consuelo's message and runs out.

Arturo apologizes to Nina for raising his voice.  He needs to leave before it ends badly.  Petra puts a comforting hand on Nina's shoulder.  And Nina lets it stay.  "Samanta, I feel like my heart is breaking."

At the Police Station, Consuelo is told that there are, unfortunately, no security cameras around the park.  But an Amber alert has been raised and the search is on.

Gaby and Franco are back at their place.  Caridad arrives to express her sympathy.  When Gaby tears up again, Franco berates Caridad for making her cry.  But then he is distracted by a ping on his phone.  He looks down and reads in Las Noticias: MOTHER OF GÓMEZ LUNA'S UNACKNOWLEDGED SON REVEALED: The empresario employed her in his office to silence rumors!  He stares at the large photos of Eladio and Caridad beneath the headlines.

He shoves the phone in Caridad's direction.  "You wanna explain this?"

For Julia's sake, David agrees to spend the night at the GL mansion.

Caridad knows nothing.  Franco is enraged.  The press will investigate her life now (and find out about the fatal sartenazo, a thing that never looks good on a resumé).  He has to find his father!

Before he leaves, he turns back to Gaby:  "I'm sorry honey, but this woman just keeps doing me harm."

Miguel arrives at the Police Station.  He gives Consuelo a hug and suggests calling Arturo so he can put his resources into the search.  Consuelo says she'll make the call herself.

Breathless, brainless and heartless, Erick catches up with the thug in a hotel hallway.  He gives him a wad of bills as payment for the first part of the job and tells him to wait.  Then he enters an apartment where a pretty young nurse is holding the baby.

Arturo shows up at the GL mansion.  Simona accompanies him to the door.  She's not sure if Julia will receive him, she says.

Erick flatters the nurse and flirts with her.  She seems to be enjoying his attention.  "The good thing," she says, "is that the baby isn't nursing."   Erick confides that for some reason, his wife's milk just dried up:  Fíjate, que un día mi mujer dejó de tener leche.

The nurse asks the child's name.  "Juan," answers Chimp Boy.  "Just like me.  Juanito."

When he leaves, the nurse is smiling; she confides to her charge:  ¡Qué papá más guapo tienes, bebe! (What a good-looking dad you have, baby.)

Back in her apartment with Miguel and Clara looking on, Consuelo phones Arturo:  "My baby has been stolen, Señor.  I need your help."

At the GL mansion, Julia tells Simona she doesn't want to see Arturo.  It was hard enough to convince David to stay the night – she doesn't want more problems.  Where is he?

We see Arturo hurrying down the outside steps of the mansion.

Simona calls out after him:  ¡Señor! ¡Señor!

David hears her voice.  He comes out of the study, perplexed.  "Who are you calling, Simona?"  Then he stares at Julia as she walks down the stairs, a troubled expression on her face.

Erick tells the thug it is time for the next step of the plan.  The thug calls the Montenegro mansion and asks for Erick.  Petra tells him he is out.  The thug leaves a message:  Just tell him we have his son!

Whew! That's a whole lot of heartache for one episode! But I have to admit, I loved it that Eladio got to be a mensch tonight.

I believe Humberto's grief is real, but I also believe he is hedging his bets.

I wouldn't mind it too much if Regina and Turtle Boy fell into a canal in Venice and swallowed a whole lot of filthy water. (Snort).

OT-In case anyone on this thread is interested, there are now 3 recaps up for Un Camino. It's actually pretty good.

Will get back to this recap in the morning.

Novelamaven , thanks so much for that excellent retelling of all the woe and misery on this cold, dark, snowflurry morning. It does put one's own personal telenovela into perspective.

Tell us how you REALLY feel about Reg, the Queen and her faithful NInja Turtle Jorge. My advice is never date anyone who is prettier than you....and a relentless stalker. I think that we can categorize Jorge as a "fanboy." Venice is too good for them.

NovelaMaven,

Thanks for this brilliantly amusing recap of such a tragic lugubrious episode. I especially enjoyed your increasingly damning evaluation of the state of Franco's soul with this sequence:

"Could there be hope for the soul of Franco Herrera after all?"

"At this point, Franco displays something that resembles normal human emotion, perhaps shock."

"Hope for the soul of Franco Herrera?  Perhaps not."

"No.  No hope.  Gah."

"Okay.  He is definitely going to hell."

This was nice:

"Humberto appears genuinely stricken."

He did, but then when this happened:

"He gasps and his head droops alarmingly to the side."

he stole a quick glance Gabriela's way to confirm that he was reaching his target audience... he wasn't.

Loved this:

"...fatal sartenazo, a thing that never looks good on a resumé..."

Which brings me this almost hidden gem that Petra gave us:

After Nina gently scolded Petra for meddling in Erick's private affairs after she commented about the divorce papers she had just delivered to him, Petra threatened to commit a miguelazo... suddenly leaving the house without warning and with no one to prepare the enchiladas they so enjoy.

Carlos

NovelaMaven, sublime.

I hardly know where to begin but "They indulge in a sort of Oedipal High Five – she offers him her hand and he kisses it"; "Consuelo is consorting with his half-brother, the same person who sabotaged the brakes on his car and caused the accident that almost killed him (but sadly, did not)", "tells Miguel how bad she feels about David's aunt and uncle and how much she wishes she could be there for him. (But she can't because she is so incredibly rigid" and "Breathless, brainless and heartless" were excellent.

In the midst of all the "whole lot of heartache" as you stated, I found myself musing about Franco. How disconcerting. I felt I was in good company and enjoyed your comments immensely: "(Could there be hope for the soul of Franco Herrera after all?)" - yes I grasped at that straw momentarily! "(Hope for the soul of Franco Herrera? Perhaps not)" occurred only moments thereafter and then "(No. No hope. Gah)" was the final realization. I believe in hope but think I will not squander it here with Franco - there are others more deserving.

How alike Franco and his father are! "Now Franco approaches the trio and puts his hands on Gaby's shoulder. Eladio glares at his son. Franco glares back" said it all.

Petra is my clear favorite here...

Carlos, I didn't see the "side eye" Humberto gave Gaby...Is it possible he was truly distraught for a few moments only to have his selfishness obliterate any real grief? Chilling, like so much else here.

Consuelo should have been concentrating solely on ensuring she retained custody but even if she hadn't been with Miguel, Erick would have abducted his child. Of course, he has shown no interest, except to the nurse as you noted.

Karen, so glad you are commenting again amiga!

NovelaMaven, thank you for making Friday even more special.

Diana

Good morning, friends! I see a few of us are already gathering on The Patio, so let's begin, shall we?

Dear Susanlynn,

Always a pleasure! Your advice (Never date anyone prettier than you) is sound as a bell, of course.

Am I treating the Queen and Turtle Boy too harshly? Nah. I never liked Regina, even when most were cheering her on. Too rigid, too self-righteous, and especially, too slap-happy! And yes yes yes – Venice is much too good for them. Maybe they should go to Fresno...

I'm pulling for Erick to destroy Connie, who does NOT deserve to be a mother!

Dear Carlos,

What a lovely surprise to read your kind and witty words so early in the morning! Thank you so for being so generous.

I'm so glad you mentioned the Miguelazo. I went back and forth about including it (Petra/Samanta often has the best lines in the script, but just as often she seems to have wandered in from the lot next door where they are shooting a comedy. And the recap was getting so very LONG!) Even so, it was a thing of beauty.

"[Humberto] stole a quick glance Gabriela's way to confirm that he was reaching his target audience... he wasn't."
Hahahaha. La gente no cambia. That the H man is in pain doesn't mean that he has stopped playing the angles...

Good morning, Diana!

Thank you so much for your heart-cockle-warming words!

"How alike Franco and his father are! "Now Franco approaches the trio and puts his hands on Gaby's shoulder. Eladio glares at his son. Franco glares back" said it all."

You're right – they ARE alike in many ways, partly because Franco is trying to emulate and imitate Eladio. But I see the son as a bad copy of the original, form without substance. I could believe in Eladio's compassion last night and in his pleasure at being given the chance to step up and be a good man. Yes, it was helping him get close to Julia, but he didn't seem two-faced. Now Franco, on the other hand... well, see above.

Have a wonderful Friday!

Absolutely echoing with delight everything Carlos and Diana said, in addition to loving "the Argentine mouth breather" and "(he's an immediate gratification kind of Chimp.)"

Although I blithely said I didn't care about the baby or anyone else in this mess, I'm afraid I can't watch any show where a baby is kidnapped. That just strikes too deep at a primal fear for me.

But the recap was clever and hilarious as always. The worse this gets, the better you get, NovelaMaven. I think I'd like to hire you to re-write my life for me. I could use some laughs right now.

Thanks for consistently writing such fine recaps. You have a golden pen...or in this case, a computer.

And a very thoughtful prologue as well. Got so caught up in your humor I forgot to mention that.

Gracias, NovelaMaven.

I didn't catch the quick glance at Gabriela, but Humberto did boast to Eladio on my watch about what a great actor he is. As annoying and frustrating as we find Gabriela there was much justification in her charges against Humberto. He wasn't in any danger here of being killed by anything as alien to him as grief for the loss of an "ingrate" daughter.

Nina is also acting. The only thing that hurts her about the divorce is the blow to her pride and the possible loss of social status. Being the wife of Arturo Montenegro was the role of a lifetime and she's about to lose it.

You are so right about Petra. She is a slightly calmer version of Adele from MIVAC. This actress must have most of her resume in comedy.

Erick's plan looks very premeditated with the issue about the "security guard" being dismissed. However, Consuelo realizes this is a set-up and the supreme irony of it all is that the kidnapper is the one who cut Erick's brakes. Not an unusual operatic coincidence for a TN but a truly delicious one for this character.

That nurse needs glasses if she thinks Ape Child is guapo. He is anything but and doesn't even look intelligent (The new hair is only a slight improvement). I still wonder how he could be the biological child of Nina and Arturo.

You captured Franco's duplicity perfectly; nothing else needs to be said. He'll be this way until his Karmageddon hits.

Does anyone remember that reporter's name? He needs to go on the Karmageddon list.

(((Judyb)))..hello, friend. It is okay to escape your real-life novela from time to time and as the sidebar advises.."Let you brain float like a pear half in jello." A Novelamaven recap is just the ticket to an all expense paid vacation to a calmer place for a little while. May I also recommend joining me on April 9 in 18th century Paris with my book boyfriend... And his wife ..mmpphhm..when Outlander season two starts. Sigh..now there's a vacation from the anything or anyone harshing your mellow.

Oh, JudyB, thank you so much, amiga! You, of course, are the one with the golden pen/keyboard.

"I think I'd like to hire you to re-write my life for me. I could use some laughs right now."
hahaha. Only if you will agree to re-write mine. I could definitely do with your perspective these days. (On second thought, maybe we are all engaged in writing our personal narratives RIGHT HERE and RIGHT NOW. A Dickensian format, to be sure - the serial grows day by day - but wholly suited to the subject matter.

Thanks for indulging me in the prologue. I almost deleted it at the last minute but decided to go for broke.

Yes, the kidnaping. I don't blame you at all. There was a Telemundo novela a few years back (¿Dónda está Elisa?) that did indeed go to all the dark places of the soul in its tale of an abduction. Here I have faith that the writers will simply use the trope (see the quotation at the beginning of the recap), but spare the feelings of The Patio in the end.

Urban, you are welcome. I enjoyed your thoughtful comment.

To paraphrase what I've said before, even schemers grieve. Even mean girls suffer. I only wish Nina had the imagination to empathize with Consuelo or Regina, say. But when she tells Petra that her heart is breaking, I have no reason to doubt her.

As for Humberto, I see him as a scoundrel but not a monster. He is a seriously flawed human being, as are so many other characters in this story. And unlike so many of the others, at least he has the grace to be funny.

Novela Maven: Old Goat Humberto won't be around with us much longer either!

Nina's heart can only break for herself, her stupid son, and her equally selfish and narcissistic daughter, Daniela. She has been playing Arturo through their entire marriage while playing the role of good wife.

Humberto is worse than a scoundrel. He can be charming to outsiders like Nina can, but he is a sociopath. He sold Julia to Eladio after almost bankrupting Israel and Amanda and doesn't have any conscience about either of these things. He considers both daughters to be "ingrates." He equally has no conscience about attempting to sell Julia to Arturo. If he lives long enough to see the pharmacy shares go bust that will be the beginning of his end.

I neglected to mention this before, but I think the death of Gabriela's parents was meant to begin the reconciliations of Gabriela and David with Julia. It will also be compounded by the shock of Marintia's baby when Gabriela realizes that Franco played her and Humberto begins shouting "I told you so!"

Now, that last thing could provoke Humberto's Karmageddon because Franco could be moved to finally knock him off for real. That staircase has to do more than look cool.

Addendum to the above about Gabriela: That Franco and Caridad played her.

Also, it is obvious that Erick never saw the security video of his brakes being cut. I pointed out previously that this would have been too important to not have been shown. That he hired the same thug is obviously the reason the writers didn't have him see the video. They could end up in the same prison at the end and the thug will have the last laugh.

You are hilarious NovelaMaven. I really didn't know what to highlight cause you had me at the prologue. Thanks

"He is an immediate gratification kind of Chimp"

Just guessing David ran to GL cause Julia Jr. called ostensibly to console but really to hand him his daily rejection. He got it anyway.

Errrrr, what the hell does Julia Jr. think so funny all the time to warrant that smirky smile? She's doing it to Jorge too. This is a girl that would put gum in a seat and wait for someone to sit in it.

Old, infirm and wheelchair bound but gotta admire a man willing to sling feces at a wall all day, everyday, always amused when it sticks.

Ah Susanlynn...always enthralled by your Outlander reviews, but alas we don't get Starz. But enjoy it doubly for me, my friend!

Tofie, YOU"RE the one who's hilarious!

"This is a girl that would put gum in a seat and wait for someone to sit in it."

"Old, infirm and wheelchair bound but gotta admire a man willing to sling feces at a wall all day, everyday, always amused when it sticks."

Good thinking about why David ran to GL. Of course! It was "cause Julia Jr. called ostensibly to console but really to hand him his daily rejection. He got it anyway."

Thanks so much!

Just perfect, NovelaMaven. Thank you! You had many great lines and perfect title that fit this episode so well.

It was getting on my nerves how twice Gaby didn't allow Julia to embrace her. Then FINALLY she did and even thanked Julia and Eladio for everything they had done for her. Hope that Julia and Gaby can recover the relationship they had.

Was surprised to see Franco show some emotion over the death of his in-laws. He showed that same semi-emotion over the death of Gisela as well. But wasn't surprised when he started asking Gaby about the will.

Enjoyed when ThugMan told Erick about having to lay low because of a failed job *wink* *wink*. I guess Erick didn't get a chance to see the footage of the man who tampered with his brakes.

Also, enjoyed when Erick (out of breath) met with ThugMan. Erick must have rushed up those stairs and couldn't handle them.

Erick used a different voice when he met with the nurse. He sounded "naco". Either the nurse needs glasses or she just has bad taste in men if she thinks that Erick is handsome. Uh.. no.

Wonderful recap NovelaMaven!!

I laughed out loud when Eladio gave Franco the stare down. Comedic gold!

I'm surprised how well behaved Eladio is being. Someone else would have tried to use the situation, i.e. Art, to get closer to Julia but Eladio is playing it just perfectly. Helpful but not pushing for more. He did look a bit uncomfortable when Gaby went to him for comfort.

Die Erick Die!!!! I don't see how this kidnapping helps his case if the baby was stolen for ransom? It shows that Connie wasn't being neglectful but that a premeditated abduction took place. How is that her fault?

NM, “When Daniela approaches (David), ..... his BS detectors must be jammed because he listens to her words of sympathy as if he believes them.” Yes, our David’s BS detectors were jammed and he’s falling in Daniela’s trap, he even let his eyes watch her as she left the room. Your descriptive phrasing threw the tiniest bit of humor into what is going to be a sad episode all around. Thanks! NM, we are so lucky to be the recipients of your immense talent, I hope my humble thanks, written not with a golden pen or keyboard, but a broken, nubby pencil on a yellow pad, is sufficient to thank you for the beauty of your recaps!

Steve B., “I'm pulling for Erick to destroy Connie, who does NOT deserve to be a mother!” I’m not that fond of Consuelo because she has knowingly made one of the most serious and lasting mistakes of the novela, entrapping an alcoholic chimp to be the father of her child. But, I feel that she will be a loving mom and doesn’t deserve to lose her baby!

Mauricio, your words always mean a lot to me since I'm such a fan of your work. Thank you!

Nice observation about Erick trying to get on the level of the nurse by changing his language a bit. That reminds of the thing Daniela does when she talks to David: she translates her teenybopper fresa-speak into standard adult terms. She does this with words like "bronca," and "mala onda," for example. (It would be more fun if she were more charming, like, say the Nikki character in Amores Verdaderos.)

"Either the nurse needs glasses or she just has bad taste in men if she thinks that Erick is handsome. Uh.. no."
Poor Chimp Boy. He really gets NO respect around here, does he. jejeje

Thanks so much, Carvivlie!

"Eladio is playing it just perfectly. Helpful but not pushing for more. He did look a bit uncomfortable when Gaby went to him for comfort."

Eladio is breaking my heart these days. His humanity seems to be blossoming, but shyly, diffidently. The actor is playing these scenes of social awkwardness – "on the spectrumness" – with great delicacy. I love it!

And by all means – Die Erick Die! And take Franco with you!

There was discussion in the other thread about if Connie deserved to lose custody or not.

There's nothing Connie has actually done, including palling around with Miguel & kissing him the hallway that should make her lose custody of Erick Jr.

HOWEVER, Connie is going up against a very rich and very powerful family. She comes from a poor background, with no family support.

The 2 people in her soon to be ex-husband's family that support her keeping the child have both told her to stay away from Miguel because it's going to be brought up as an issue.

Miguel has been told to stay away from Connie until the divorce/custody issues are resolved. He has ignored everyone, with encouragement from Connie who sends him pictures and invites him in.

I don't even know why Connie had the stroller she had; she should've had one where the baby faces HER; the one she had was more appropriate for a toddler than an infant.

I don't know, Sandy – you get a lot of eloquence out of that broken, nubby pencil and yellow pad of yours. :) But I am very glad you enjoyed the recap.

Yes, that Consuelo has done a lot of silly things hardly means that she deserves to lose her baby. From everything we've seen, she's a loving mother. From everything we've seen of Erick, he is a selfish SOB.

I'm kind of curious about whether Ashmore is still in the picture as far as Dani is concerned. (On the other hand, if he pulled a Miguelazo at this point, I wouldn't be too sad.)

I'm no fan of Connie either but more because she fell for the Chimp and then the Dweeb not because she's "bad" and certainly doesn't deserve to be stripped of her child. It was clear, had the nurse not been pretty, Chimpboy wouldn't have stayed a minute checking on his son.

I know babies are supposed to be cute or precious but we all must admit some have a face only the mother can love and if fathered by Eric, well. Perhaps that is why Connie's stroller did not face her.

Brava NovelaMaven--You did us proud last night. The Patio was worried. Hands gripping the edges of the tables, drinks halfway to pursed lips, eyes shut--except for the ones peeping through squinted eyelids.

What an episode. You handled Humberto as he should have been (except he didn't stay prone long enough). You handled Eladio as the ggodhead he is. You handled Caridad and Marintia as far away from you as you could.

I'm with JudyB and all others--babynapping is one of the worst plot devices ever. I can't believe Erick (oh ye of little brain) thought this one up all by himself! And he won't have to change dirty diapers either--what a stroke of genius. The excuse he gave the baby nurse is that he's distraught because his wife has been hospitalized and he needs to be by her side, so he may be AOL a lot of the time. She says she's up to the job--the best reputation in all of Mexico (and she's how old--22, maybe?)

More after I read the comments.

While I think that Coni has demonstrated extreme stupidity and selfishness in the way she and Miguel have behaved, in no way do I think that she deserves to lose custody of Niñrick. If she does, however, I firmly believe that Nina (and perhaps to a lesser extent, Erick) will provide both love and appropriate care for the child. As for Erick, I don't blame him for having her followed to obtain evidence to bolster his effort to win his case (remember, he has said that he does not want this divorce) but I cannot condone the kidnapping (a serious crime) and expect it will ultimately lead to his undoing. I'm also hoping that Nina refuses to participate in this incredible act of stupidity and insists that Erick at least finds a way to rectify things quickly.

A quick word about Nina, in addition to her children adoring her, Petra also seems to have genuine affection for her and is even comfortable joking around with her.

Carlos

Thanks so much for your hilarious recap NovelaMaven. Though the episode was sad, your comments kept me giggling (the possibility of Franco's humanity and the trouble with Regina).

Glad to see you again as well Diana. I've missed you and the group. I truly admire Carlos' ability to admire and criticize Nina and in that spirit, I have to agree with NM. While I didn't see the rigidity and self-righteousness of Regina initially (I was revolted by her slap-happy nature), it's so glaring now. She knows her selfish family would not make the "sacrifice" she is making with regard to David. Even Miguel, who I try to support in spite of wildly poor choices and his unfortunate stalker tendencies, did restrain himself from Connie and he probably has the most discipline of his whole sorry family.

Susanlynn OT how excited are you for "Outlander" season 2? I too miss Sara.

Steve, your assessment of Connie is harsh. I have to agree with Sandy, Connie may have been dumb but she's a better parent than Chimp Boy will ever be.

One of the things that is hilarious about Petra is how she almost always causes the actress playing Regina to crack. It's fun watching her try to be serious (and mean to David) once Petra gives on of her trademark quips.

NM--Fresno, just breathe in that wonderful country air--the avocado growing capital of Central California. That's the Only place where one breaks up in a yoghurt café and a yacht is not just a yacht.

UA--"That staircase has to do more than look cool." Well, it did provide the tumble sequence for Julia tripping. Humberto would look good bumping down all those steps strapped to his hummer chair.

tofie--I have earnestly tried to like Regina, but she has gotten annoying. I was disappointed she accepted Jorge to kiss her and become novios so soon after declaring her undying love for David. "This is a girl that would put gum in a seat and wait for someone to sit in it." You said it, but I believe it now.

Sandy in TN--I'm glad you said to Steve what you did regarding Consuelo as not deserving to have her child taken from her. She's done everything to protect him AND love him. He's happy (we think) and healthy (we are told). During the hearing I was surprised to hear the ChimpBoy use her refusal to hire a highly paid nanny-nurse to care for the baby as a measure of being a bad mother. Her defense was she wanted to care for the baby herself, as though that was highly unusual. How many of us working mothers had only wished we could have taken care of our own babies from cradle to high school.

Anon207--You are right on about the stroller. I actually had a baby carriage for the first few months, until I found a six-month old pulling herself up in it. I used a facing stroller so I could talk to my toddlers about the wonders of the world around him and her. After that--they walked everywhere.

Well so much for plot devices vs. the real world.

Karen and all.....A couple of episodes ago Petra talked over both Erik and Nina for a full two minutes and gave a performance worthy of Abbott and Costello. (Showing my age!) I thought both Alejandro N and Marlene F were barely containing their laughter. Raquel (Petra) has brought a delightful warmth to our dark little novela. I too have noticed the everyday banter and respect in the relationship between Petra, Nina and even Arturo, plus the children seem to get a kick out of her gentle meddling. Maybe we should FF though all scenes except those with Petra, we'll have less angst that way!

Sandy, ITA w/you about FF through everything but the Petra scenes! We'd come away from this tn with laughs. JudyB had mentions this a while ago, but the actress who plays Petra does make the most of the few lines she gets. And yes it seems she has beamed in from a comedy show but this tn, with some of the most annoying characters I've encountered, needs it.

Karen...yes..I cannot wait to join my book beau, the King of Men in Paris.Have you checked out the gorgeous costumes for the French court online?

Anita ..I was one of those stay at home mommies. I only worked part-time two days a week starting when my girls were 2 and 4 , and my mother and mother-in-law both lived close by and watched them the days I worked. We only had a paid babysitter once...the niece of friends.I am sure that Erick had a nanny or nannies whom he terrorized daily, so the thought Connie taking care of her own child seems odd to him.

Thank you NovelaMaven---Your snark was off the wall funny as well as interesting today, especially your comments that were in parenthesis. I'm short on time today and don't have time to mention many of your great lines and so I will just say that you have made this a gold star recap.

I for one can see the goodness in Regina's (incredibly annoying soul.) My offer of a few days ago still stands. I will be more than happy to take this annoyance away from the patio. It's but the least I can do.

I didn't know where to go with Humberto. Either he really does have some feelings or he's a very good actor.
But then---Urban at 10:28. us always, you make so much sense.

It looked like Erick was more interested in the young pretty nurse than he was in little Erick. I don't believe that he cares about little Erick at all, he just wants to hurt Consuelo. Oh! Rat Boy Chimp hurt Consuelo? Well that doesn't count and rat momma Nina will be backing Erick all the way.

Carlos---Quoting your most famous line--you don't know that but. No I don't but it is in Nina's character to do so.

I have to run---will read all of the comments later tonight.

must see tv
the gringo

I'm glad someone else agrees with me that Consuelo has done nothing to merit losing custody of her baby. The way some of you have been going on one would think she'd have to have her hormones neutralized and wear a nun's habit for the rest of her life.

As to whether Erick thought of the kidnapping scheme all by himself, I think he did. He's just not smart enough to think it through with all its possible consequences. There was a line in the film Body Heat that described this situation perfectly:

Every time you try to do a decent crime there are 50 ways you can f*** up. If you can think of 25 of them you're a genius. And you ain't no genius.

It was another blink-and-you'll-miss-it, but when he kissed Nina goodbye and left the house saying "If anyone asks, I was here all day," she turned to the camera and had this look on her face that said "WTH did he mean by that?"

He doesn't tell her everything. She didn't approve of the Rat so he never told her about the party. She didn't recognize the necklace and he never told her anything about it or she never would have worn it and taken a selfie in it.

Susanlynn, my husband and I are watching Outlander now. (JudyB we traded Starz for Showtime for no extra money) The Scots and English were very rakish gentlemen in the clannish Highlander years! Our Claire gets herself in rather a difficult situation with a strapping Scotsman or a randy Redcoat two or three times an episode! I just hope Jamie never loses his incredible timing and enduring strength to ride in and save her after episode twenty or so! We are having a lot of fun watching it, the scenery and cut stone manor homes alone make it worth the time.

OT..Sandy...Have you read Diana Gabaldon's book series? I think that Doris watched season one. I heard about them years ago from women who were on a forum about Highlander the TV series with an immortal Highland warrior played by Adrian Paul. However, life was verra busy, and I never got around to reading them. Then, I saw that Starz was going to adapt them . One of my friends bought all the books and passed them along as she finished each one to another friend. I got them next. I read them after I saw season one and couldn't wait to see what happened. I read all eight books over the summer. Hubba keot saying " Are you still reading THAT book?" the author is currently working on book #9.

Hello NovelaM and all delightful commentators. I wanted to thank all of you for keeping me entertained, in stitches and out of trouble. You all are gifted and have such a wonderful way with words. I comment off and on, but when you don't hear from me, please know I am lurking and that there are more of me, I am certain. Thanks again and have a great weekend.
Leticia

UA, ITA w/you regarding Connie. Fooling around with Miguel was dumb, but how can that merit her losing her son?! Chimp Boy is wretched! There is no comparison between the two as far as parenting is concerned. And let's not even bother to list his crimes and lack of morality. As gringo said, Erick was more interested in the nurse than his son.

Susanlynn, I have not seen the costumes so thanks for the heads up!

Susanlynn, Aunt Blabby here, besides commenting on novelas, is a member of a very active book club. I could never take on the Outlander book series. My two smartest girlfriends (former investment bankers) love the books and talk about Jamie as though he were real, in fact, I thought he was real in the way they referred to him! They think the TV Jamie is cast too young for the book Jamie!

Don't forget, David liked and wanted to be with Daniela when she dissed him. If Daniela had never dissed David in the first place he could very well still be with her and not Regina.

So...any anvil predictions? Will anyone have a happy ending? I think that everyone should just move away and start new lives. Art, Eladio, Julia, and Nini are clinging to the past. Let go. Try something new because these current lives built on the past are just not working.

OT..Sandy...Jamie is real !!! Heh If you read the first book...you will not be able to stop. I saw TV Jamie first, so he is my book Jamie..not too young , not too old. Readers meet Jamie at age 23, and in book 8 , he is in his fifties , I think. The actor Sam Heughan is 34..right in the middle. It is the story of lifelong married love. Google him..fascinating guy. Also check out Compuserve Outlander where the author comments often on the books and the show.

As for David and Dani, I think that it would not have taken long for him to see her shallowness , immaturity , and lack of empathy. I guess Reggie will somehow realize that David is her onetruelove and will end up with him in the end. Do you think that she will return the turtle to Jorge?

Thank you so much, Anita!

I'm happy to know that Fresno is evocative for you too.

I think Chimp Boy has been thinking about snatching the baby for some time. A few episodes back, he told Consuelo that the child of such a wealthy family would be a tempting target – that's why she needed to accept his guaruras. I think we all knew at that moment what was bound to happen.

Normally I read right past typos (my own and those of others), but this one of yours intrigued me:

"You handled Eladio as the ggodhead he is."

I can think of a few interpretations, but I prefer to appeal to the source. Ppretty ppplease....

"One of the things that is hilarious about Petra is how she almost always causes the actress playing Regina to crack. It's fun watching her try to be serious (and mean to David) once Petra gives on of her trademark quips".

Exactly Karen!!

I just love it when the actors laugh and Petra is doing a masterful job here. I am fairly certain I have even seen Nina's lips quiver slightly a few times. I always smile when she comes onscreen. There was another great moment I hope you saw. Julia was perched on a table when it came close to crashing. Fernando definitely came out of character as he laughed and held onto her which Susana rewarded by blowing him what was surely an ad-libbed kiss.

And that's about all the levity we have here.

Keep 'em coming Petra!

Diana

Karen, you are very welcome. I'm also particularly pleased when you take a moment to join in the discussion and anxious to hear your reactions.

I agree that Raquel Garza, the actress playing Petra, is a pro. Even though she seems to be in some kind of parallel universe, I'm never tempted to throw nerfazos at the screen during her scenes. And yes, her ability to make the actors around her crack up definitely lightens what is sometimes an oppressive atmosphere. I'm glad that we don't have a separate enclave of Petra-like characters for "comic relief." As I see it, what makes her stuff funny is how she butts up against the pretensions of the Familia Montenegro, especially Nina's.

You're welcome, Gringo!

As I've said before, I'm glad to know Regina has a fan out on The Patio (and I'm sure you'd have plenty of company if you set up a table and set out some pitchers of beer and bowls of chips).

As for Nina, I don't think we know how far she is willing to go. While her egging on Erick in the custody battle is troubling, that's not the same thing as abetting a kidnapping. As Urban points out above, Nina certainly didn't look happy when Erick talked vaguely about a plan and his need for an alibi.

Urban, thanks for the line from Body Heat. You're right – it does describe Erick's situation perfectly, and not just in this particular instance.

Leticia, you are very welcome. I'm glad you've been enjoying the recaps from our team.

You have a great weekend too!

Jorge has got his toe in and will not relinquish his spot. He's another, like Miguel that crushed from afar, and now kissing a live woman. I can see a staged turtle napping in the future or worse.

" Do you think that she will return the turtle to Jorge?"

Susanlynn and tofie, I believe the turtle is already plotting his escape. Sure he's slow, but he makes up for it by being smarter than anyone around him.

I think Nina and Eladio will end up dying based on them saying "they would just die if Julia left" or "won't leave the house until death".

Arturo will end up broke and alone or in a manicomio and Julia will move on without either Arturo OR Eladio.

Hummy will either die in a fire or escaleracide.

Caridad will end up back in jail. She's going to end up doing something illegal to help Franco and get caught.

Gaby will leave town to manage her father's company and Agustin will leave with her.

Dani will OD and die or OD and end up in a long term care facility.

GLA y GM will end up becoming one company.

Erick will be found out about both the kidnapping and Montserrat's murder and go to jail, but this time with no Nina or Arturo to help him.

Franco will die; he will probably kill Eladio.

Clara & Justino will marry and form a happy family with Luisita; Consuelo gets Erick Jr. back and forms a happy family with Miguel and leaves town.

David & Regina get married. Fin.

Interesting Anon207. Have we ever had a novela in which so many of the main characters had such less than desirable fates? Can Julia live alone, she is really needy, helpless and flighty? Besides David and Regina plus Clara and Justino, almost everyone has a lonely or muerto fin. Not disagreeing, just thinking out loud.

Forgot Consuelo and Miguel, they will be happy I guess! None of these parings are the novela stuff that dreams are made of!

IDK, I can see the writers getting Julia and Art together after their respective spouses die. I'm sure in order to make it less hard, Eladio will turn violent and brutal again and Nina will become a big bruja.

Anon, I agree with most of your post. I wonder whether we will need a Karmageddon weekend discussion. Someone please post when they announce "Ultimas Semanas."

I love the idea of Erick in prison in the same cell as his and Franco's favorite thug.

Franco and Eladio killing each other might work.

If Franco dies, I think Caridad will either off herself or she will try to raise Franco, Jr.

If Humberto goes down the stairs, who pushes him?

Julia needs to be alone for a while, whether in DF or anywhere else. Without Humberto or Eladio around she can take care of herself, especially if she reconciles with David.

I don't think Arturo will end up in a manicomio. He will need a shrink no matter what happens to himself or his company. I think he will end up saving someone's life before the end of the story and that someone is likely to be Regina, his golden child. He will be the CEO of the combined company.

Someone asked earlier if Assmore is still in the picture. I don't recall seeing Daniela breaking up with him, so if she tries to reel David back in I can't wait for his reaction.

This comment has been removed by the author.

NM--I started out to name him with the Supreme Deity's name, then realized that Eladio wasn't equal to That One. So, I wrote it with a small "g" and that didn't look right without the capital "G" so I made what I thought was a minor change. The two "gg" looked interesting. I didn't know it would be singled out.

Thanks for explaining that, Anita. I'm sorry if you felt put on the spot. It's just that the light on The Patio is so intense...

This novela along with endless winter is bumming me out. Nobody is happy. Nobody is bunnyhopping. The angst is like an albatross around my neck. H.E.L.P.

Susanlynn: Connie & Miguel brought this on THEMSELVES!

I do believe that Franco will send Callao to whack Justino!

NovelaMaven, fabulous recap. Enjoyed it to the last drop, especially your chronicle of Franco's reactions (soul? - no soul?).

How ironic is it that Gaby is all "Stand by Your Man" no matter how insensitive and selfish Franco is, but Regina has David's love but takes off at any hint of trouble?

I have no problems with Erick's looks -- it's everything else about him that I can stand. How awful would it be if the kidnappers turned the tables on his dumb self and actually upped the $$$ to get the baby back?

Consuelo is a good mom, but after calling the police Miguel would not have been the first person I called. What'd she expect him to do besides understandably cry with her? Arturo is the smartest one in that family and that's who I would've called.

Thanks, Niecie! Glad you liked it.

"How ironic is it that Gaby is all "Stand by Your Man" no matter how insensitive and selfish Franco is, but Regina has David's love but takes off at any hint of trouble?"

Nice point!

OT... Susanlynn♥,

"Readers meet Jamie at age 23, and in book 8 , he is in his fifties... It is the story of lifelong married love."

Well heck, and here I've been hoping that sooner or later Claire will make it back to the 20th Century. Lifelong married love? Yikes! I'm gonna need more Scotch.

Carlos

((Carlos))...Have you read any of the books? If not, I do not want to give you anymore spoilers. Are you a FOF (Friend of Frank)? What are your feelings about Laoghaire? Well, get ready for a wild ride. I felt like I was punched in the stomach a couple times when I read the next two books...so many surprising events. I mean..like...YIKES !!!! I am looking forward to the saga coming to life on the screen. I must buy a bottle of Drambuie before April 9. I do not even have a bottle of beer in the house.

Susanlynn♥,

Surely you must at least suspect that I'm fond of Laoghaire, and I was liking Frank well enough until his lookalike ancestor raped Jamie so cruelly and lovingly (yikes, did I just say that?) now I have my doubts about him too. You've really got me looking forward to the 2nd season. You definitely must get a supply of both Scotch and Drambuie. If you checked that link to the history of Drambuie then you know that it was supposedly Bonnie Prince Charlie's favorite libation.

Carlos

NovMav--I didn't feel put on the spot at all, it's all in fun. And any attention from you, linguistically speaking, is special!

OT...Carlos...yes, I suspected that you might be a fan of that cheeky twit Laoghaire...I am not.I have been lurking on Compuserve Outlander where The author hangs out and comments. It is mostly women commenters , but there are three guys who comment ...all husbands and all friends of poor Frank. Bah ...Frank with his girly hands, smooth skin , and affairs. Yes, BJR's "feelings" toward Jamie are much debated, but the author is adamant about all that.I did read about the history of Drambuie..verra interesting.

Niecie, I was also hoping she'd call Arturo. He can think on his feet about things like this.

Rather than risk not having it read I have other thoughts I will post tomorrow.

Thanks...it really is pretty good. Better than I expected from that first old ppl playing young episode that sucked...now I'm hooked!
