El Hotel de los Secretos #48, 4/4/16: Smoke and Bookshelves

It's night-time. The Gold Knife Killer, or a copycat, stabs Angela's husband Pablo. Pablo screams, and Ayala et al come running. Ayala instructs someone to give Pablo first aid. Meanwhile, Ayala searches high and low for the killer, but is felled by a block dropped from above.

Andres and Julio are in their room. Julio again fails to tell Andres anything. What's more, Cecilia is at their door! She wants to talk. Julio takes her outside. She tells him she did Diego. Julio is unimpressed. Cece says Diego knows Isabel wasn't a virgin, and Cece knows that Julio's the guy. She either says that Diego is filled with hell or that being with him was hell... either way, she's got some physical souvenirs from the experience and shows them to Julio: on her lip, on her neck, on her shoulder. "Montejo did this?" Julio asks stupidly. "No, YOU did this to me!" Cece accuses. She says something like, have your fun now while you can, because the longer I have to wait for you the more you'll have to pay. (That sounds insane. Did I get it wrong? Is she really that nutty?)

Isabel braids her hair. Diego calls her to bed. She dutifully approaches. (I guess Cecilia didn't wear him out after all.)

Morning. Benjamin flogs or scourges himself with a wicked-looking cat o' nine tails, luxuriating in every stroke. Is it a routine flogging, or is this a special occasion?

At the hospital, Violeta panics because she needs ether, but she can't read. Later, she hears Gabriel singing. Is he singing to mock her, or is he singing to tell her that it's okay? I can't tell! I think she can't tell either, because she's crying.

Isabel tells Julio about Pablo. He's in bad shape, but he's alive. She feels guilty that she cared less about his condition than whether or not Ayala got any info out of him. She also feels badly that Andres doesn't know about his father. Julio promises to tell him. "And how are you?" he asks Isabel. "Not well," she replies, "but I have to go to the hospital."

Mrs. Limantur is telling her friend about Mimi Peralta doing the hospital benefit concert. Andres and Natalia, who are looking very chummy lately, overhear and are excited.

Teresa and Elisa have a civil, even cordial meeting over breakfast to discuss... things. Now that they're both on the same side, they can chat pleasantly. Elisa has a lot of questions about how they pulled off the baby scam, including Dr. Santamaria's cooperation and Sofia's phantom pregnancy. "Poor Sofia," Elisa says sympathetically, stirring her tea. "Yes, poor Sofia," Teresa echoes, no doubt thinking "poor ME."

"So, what do you want?" Teresa finally asks. Elisa warns that Alfredo wants to leave, and she wasn't able to dissuade him. Hopefully Teresa can convince him to stay. "Family is sacred, isn't it, Teresa?"

Julio catches up with Andres and Natalia. He tries to send Natalia away, but Nat lurks nearby and listens as Julio tells Andres that his father is in town and his mother went to see him. Andres angrily refuses to listen, disbelieving, until Julio says that Isabel saw Pablo too. THEN Andres is angry that he wasn't told sooner!

Teresa is out on the front steps when Cece and her nieces return home from a shopping trip. She had to get some things for tonight's reception for Mr. Anastasio Tagle. Teresa is surprised that Cece is planning to attend, but Cece says she and Anastasio go waaaaay back. She adds that Teresa's son-in-law (Diego) ought to be in a better mood tonight.

Over Cece's shoulder, Teresa sees her other son-in-law, Alfredo, loading his things into a car. She hurries into the hotel to get Sofia out of bed. As she unties Sofia, Teresa acts as though it's been lazy of Sofia to be tied to the bed all this time being useless.

Natalia tells Angela that Andres went to the hospital to see his father. Distraught, Angela takes off in as dignified manner as she can, but a couple of maids notice her ruffled demeanor.

At the hospital, Isabel and the doctor try to keep Andres out of the OR, but Pablo's eyes open. "Forgive me," he moans to Andres. Ayala wants to question him, but the doctor says it's out of the question. And then Pablo passes out.

Angela can't get a ride to the hospital - the last wagon's already gone out. And Diego wants to see her in his office. He wants to know, where are the flowers for tonight's reception? Oops. Diego threatens, a head housekeeper can't slip up. Maybe she's getting too old for the job. "Your family's work leaves much to be desired," he snarls.

Felipe and Anastasio smoke opium all day. It must be some really great stuff, because they are just slouching in their seats: not listening to Pink Floyd, not watching Wizard of Oz or some Fellini movie, not even looking at the groovy clouds out the window. Just sitting and being soooooo high. But not high enough, apparently: Anastasio wants to do some more.

Alfredo is getting in the car when Sofia runs up and begs him not to go. He's had enough. He reminds her of the time he wanted to leave this place with her, this place that lets in no light, and she wouldn't go. Back then, she said he was all she needed. But it wasn't true. He's tried to help her (when? I just remember him taking walks) but she's broken. He gave her his soul and his hopes and she stomped on them. "You were born broken," Alfredo concludes in response to Sofia's feeble pleas, and takes off.

Watching from an indiscreet distance, Teresa murmurs, "Oh Sofia, can't you learn to do anything right?"

Genaro is in a terrible mood. There isn't a single client in the cantina. He goes outside and finds notices hung up all over town. Actually it looks to be a crude drawing of a woman, but I can't really make it out. Apparently, however, it has something to do with the anti-syphilis campaign/witch hunt. Genaro demands an explanation from the cop who's been pasting the notices up. (The cop explains that it's for people who can't read.) Genaro paints the cop with his own glue and sticks one of the notices to his shirt.

Angela scrambles to get some flowers. Andres returns home from the hospital. He sullenly reports that his father is dying. He begs Angela to stop lying to him and tell him the truth, or he'll leave her. Angela is relieved to hear that Pablo didn't tell Andres anything, but he did apologize. "What was he apologizing for?" Andres asks.

While Julio eavesdrops, Angela says that she is the one who should be apologizing, because it's all her fault that Pablo left them: They got married because she was pregnant (she neglects to mention by whom), but she never loved him. Eventually the pain got to be too much for him, and he left. She thought it would be better for Andres to think his father was dead.

Andres bitterly replies that Angela was wrong about that. He watched Romulo play with Felipe, give advice on how to be a man - Andres never had a chance to ask his father questions. He feels like yelling at Angela and hurting her. "What do I do now?" he asks.

The day grows long. Felipe is high as a kite. He nudges his friend Anastasio to tell him how great he feels. Anastasio doesn't respond. He nudges him harder. Anastasio flops over sideways. Oh no, is he dead?

Nice work, Felipe!

Genaro and his ladies go to the comisario to complain to Dagoberto about the notices. "I bet you're not posting these things around the Grand Hotel!" Genaro accuses. Later, Genaro, his workers, and Dagoberto swarm outside the hospital. The priest is there too, looking overwhelmed. Ayala explains that he has to inspect every room, every bathroom, every kitchen. If Genaro lets his workers receive their examinations, Ayala will give Genaro time to get his place in order for the inspection. I guess Genaro really needs that time, because he immediately agrees - as long as Dagoberto goes to the hotel for Cecilia Gaitan and her girls. (Dagoberto looks like a deer caught in the headlights.)

Felipe goes to Jorge Arenas in a panic. He says he stashed Anastasio in an armoire, but he didn't grab the manuscript he was supposed to get. He's in big trouble now! Felipe looks hard at Jorge as if he's noticing something about him for the first time, as Jorge's men drag Felipe away.

Diego's given Isabel a new dress for tonight. It's red! Will her body repel the brightly colored fabric? We shall see. She thanks him with many kisses (initiated by him). He leaves her to try on the dress in privacy. They part at the door with kisses.

As soon as Diego leaves, Julio barges in and reports what Angela told Andres about Pablo. She didn't mention any of the bad stuff, like how he's been extorting her for all these years. Even when Andres said he never wanted to see her again, she didn't defend herself. Julio and Isabel appreciate how important this secret must be for her to keep it under these circumstances. (Why they ever felt that it was their place to meddle with Andres, I do not know.) They agree to meet in Romulo's office tonight during the reception. The party will be full of people; no one will miss them.

Dagoberto tries to tell Cecilia about the anti-syphilis campaign. She acts shocked to hear about prostitution. She assures him that her innocent, demure nieces need a strong man to protect them. Now he really is a deer in the headlights as the nieces converge upon him, pawing and flattering. Cecilia closes the doors, leaving them to their work.

It must be evening already. Aren't we missing the reception? Hasn't anyone noticed yet that Anastasio is missing? Or did he recover? I kinda thought he was dead. Oh well. Isabel is in her red gown, and she and Julio are combing through Romulo's office looking for something out of the ordinary. Julio finds a small bust (the statue kind) behind some books. It has a sapphire-shaped dent in it. Isabel puts Angela's necklace there, and suddenly the bookshelves move aside to reveal a staircase.

Julio and Isabel light candles and step into the passageway. Julio takes the necklace from the bust, and the bookshelf/door closes behind them.

Teresa is in her room, getting ready for the reception. (I think we are seeing things out of order.) Sofia wanders in, looking like a ghost. She goes to the ottoman and takes out the gun and points it at herself. "I told you I couldn't take it anymore!"

Next time: Isabel reads a document that reveals that Andres is her brother. Someone's going to have some splaining to do!

I have to admit: Benjamin is looking very, very guilty now. But the shadow that was fleeing from the crime scene seemed rather svelte to be Benjamin.

Oh i missed it couldnt stay awake.Cant wait for recaps.Poor Andres the father he thinks is his ,is dying.Angela seems unusualy compassionate towards the malvado-extortionist.But that was my last view .Just hate being unable to finish seeing it.Especialy the consequences of Felipe getting all high with the famous WHO?I forgot who took over for Vivi but hope you wake up early. Thanks again!!

Recap is done... I am a little unsure of the body count. At first I thought both Pablo and Anastasio were dead, but Pablo turned out not to be completely dead yet, and now I'm thinking Anastasio Tagle (Nasty Tangle) might not actually be dead either, but just temporarily indisposed. (But then why hide him in the armoire?)

If Anastasio really is dead, Felipe needs to take a good long look at his own life... again. Maybe there is some out-of-town monastery that will take him.

Julie, fantastic! Thanks! My favorite line: "Is it a routine flogging, or is this a special occasion?". It made me laugh this a.m.

Sure hope Diego does not bring any std's home like syphillis.

I enjoyed the whole Felipe and Anastasio and opium adventure. Poor Anastasio stashed away!

Loved the secret bookshelf door.

Darn, I had to miss this and now want to run home and watch. I so want to see the Secret Door. Ooooooo.

Wonderful recap Julie. Detail and imagery were tremendous.

Interesting choice Diego chooses red for Isabel. Letting everyone know his wife isn't as pure as the driven snow anymore? Jerk

I'm leaning to the fact Angela needs to sit her son down and tell him the WHOLE truth. She is now doing him no favors. Events are spiraling.

Benji is definitely a member of Opus Dei

http://www.odan.org/corporal_mortification.htm

I ran across the term in a book about Robert Hanssen, the FBI spy, who was a member
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Hanssen

Now I'm not so sure he is the killer, but he sure feels guilty about something. If you saw PyP last night, it might be Petra.

We need to know more about Benji's hijo. He has an interest in Angela, maybe sexual.

Great novela

I found the opium scenes especially disturbing. They weren't doing anything. They weren't partying or watching a lava lamp or even talking. Playing with coloring books? Arguing Batman vs Superman? Writing bad poetry? Staring at neon mandalas on black velvet? Nope, none of that. I don't think they were even having visions. Just sitting there like zombies. How empty does your life have to be if that's how you want to kill a whole day? Do these guys know about knitting? Golf? Sex? Stamp collecting? Chasing hobos?

Sad.

Tks Julie, great recap

Variopinta, you are right about Benji's interest in Angela. However, I don't know if it's a nice affection or some kind of twisted weird obsession.

I don't know if the GKK is interested in anyone specific or not, but the fact that he went for both Andres and Pablo makes me wonder if Angela is on his list too. If so, then what was the deal with all the other random people he killed at the beginning, including a couple of women out-of-town? Were they just warm-up/practice killings?

Also, didn't the GKK go for Isabel once too? Or did she just happen to cross his path at the wrong time?

So many mysteries!

Is it a routine flogging, or is this a special occasion?

That line just cracked me up. I see that Jarifa enjoyed it also. Haven't seen this yet, but wow, sounds like it was chock-full of new developments. And like Daisynjay, can't wait to see the secret staircase. Reminds me of all those thrilling mysteries I read as a kid. Nancy Drew here I come!

Thanks Julie. Had class this morning, a funeral and a hospital call this afternoon, so not sure when I can see this, but looking forward to it. Thoroughly enjoyed the recap.

Julie
I go for " twisted weird obsession.", Benji is twisted & weird.

I believe Benji knows about the origin of Andres, am I correct?

I still think there are 2 killers, however the gold knife seems to connect them, so maybe not. Maybe the first few were just practice

Thank you so much Julie.

Finally someone with the smarts to leave this place. I don't blame Alfredo.

Isabel is not forcing herself to be intimate with Diego. She looked quite the seductress as she saw him to the door and quickly hid to cover herself when Julio barged in.

Felipe is worthless

I also liked the secret chamber and eagerly look forward to what they find.

Angela didn't lie and hide all this solely to protect Andres. She did it to protect her wealthy lover, Romulo.

Julie, you crack me up with your opium concern. What's more concerning is the addictiveness of opium and seeing Felippe succumbing to the use. The effects are just that on use though; utter relaxation and a feeling of euphoria. That's at first and the short term effects. But what opium become a problem as opium dens were opened, etc. was like what we are aware today with these type drugs, the body begins to become accustomed to the smaller doses and craves a larger amount to be able to reach the same high. Users become increasingly dependent, leading to loss of weight, disorientation, brain disorders, etc. Think what we know about heroine and it's addictive traits and how hard it is to withdraw from use.

I guess Teresa's kiddies need to numb themselves as much as possible...for Sophia, maybe permanently.

On the killings? Can't remember, were any of the early women killed prostitutes? For some reason I seem to recall that may have been the case. It would make sense with someone who feels himself some messenger of God to deal out justice. I always thought Benjy had a thing for Angela, but he's showing his distaste for her being friendly with Lupe. She may have gone from someone he wanted for himself and was ridding those around her who made her sin, to punishing her himself. Could he have poisoned Rom? He certainly would have had access to him...

Daisynjay

Variopinta, I don't know if Benjamin knows about the origin of Andres or not. Lupe figured it out, so I would think that Benji would have too - but then I can't vouch for what may or may not be going on inside Benji's head.

I wonder what kind Isabel was reading in the avances. Was it a copy of The Letter? Or was it a birth certificate or something. At any rate, it's high time she knew that Andres is her half-brother. Since she already knew that Angela and her father were lovers, she might have guessed it eventually anyway.

Angela must know about this secret passage, since her necklace is the key. So she was probably planning to go there herself the other night when she was looking for the necklace and was interrupted by Teresa. (It is quite droll to think that Teresa probably had no knowledge of her husband's man-cave, his love nest for Angela.) Was Angela going to look for the very same document that Isabel finds tonight? Was she going to use it to support a claim? Or was she planning to burn it? Too late now!

Daisynjay, we don't know that any of the victims were prostitutes other than Jimena. All we know is that they were women.

It really doesn't look as though Romulo was ever poisoned. They said he died of pneumonia.

Thanks, Julie, for the great recap.

I'm so peeved at Julio and Isa. This was not their secret to reveal. And Julio has become quite the little sneaky snoop.

Variopinta: I think there might be two killers, too.

I believe Ben has feelings for Angela and also it's possible he doesn't believe Lupe is good enough for Angela, him being a cook.

I thought Angela went to get the necklace to sell in order to get the money for Pablo.

OT: I've yet to see an ad for the next TN after PYP, which is in Ultimas Capitulos. Does anyone know what's coming next?

Nanette

I was not surprised when Julio eavesdropped on Andres and Angela, but I was taken aback when Natalia spied on Julio and Andres. But then, I was also taken aback when she was so nasty to Violeta last week. I mean, I can see her trying to protect her brother, but to talk the way she did to Violeta while at a church (or just outside one) didn't really line up with what I thought of Natalia.

We were never told why Angela looked for the necklace. Selling it for Pablo money was one theory, but personally I doubt that she would have parted with it after all these years. Possibly she was going to look for something in the secret room that she could sell.

Or maybe she was looking for the document that Isabel finds tonight - to show it to Andres and forever end Pablo's blackmail. She seemed pretty determined not to ever let that cat out of the bag, though.

Nanette, Yago (with Ivan Sanchez! yay!) begins May 2 at 9pm on Univision. But I'm not sure if PyP is going to run until May since they're already saying Ultimos Capitulos instead of Semanas. (Originally, Tres Veces Ana was going to replace PyP but Univision postponed it since it wasn't ready or something.)

Julie, I think Angela mentioned to Pablo that she wanted to sell the necklace to get the money she was going to give him, but she wasn't able to.

Oh, thanks J. That must have been a scene I missed when I was asleep. :( I've got to stay awake for these things.

Gracias, Julie and wow! What an episode.

I love secret rooms in these things. Can't wait to find out what's in it. But how do you get out of it?

Benjamin creeps me out even more now; waiting to see who is the killer. When a shadow is longer than its owner is tall it will look thinner than its owner. So Benjamin could be the killer.

And yes, Cecelia is crazy. She wants Julio back as her personal sex slave. She is also nuts if she thinks she's fooling anyone calling her protegees "nieces."

Sofia about to off herself? I don't think so.... yet. There are too many episodes left for that.

If Yago follows PyP I'm watching. The series will also have Rosa Maria Bianchi and Flavio Medina so it will be very worth our time.

If you ask me, Sofia was pointing the gun at the wrong person, and several months (if not decades) too late.

Sofia should have trusted Alfredo and told him the truth back when she lost the baby. He was right - she should have left that place with him when she had the chance.

However, now that he's gone, he should never look back. Ha! I'll bet his mother and Teresa can put their heads together and come up with some horrible kind of blackmail to get him to return.

I absolutely hated Flavio Medina and Rosa Maria Bianchi's characters in Yo No Creo en Los Hombres. I guess that means that they can act.

Hope this new telenovela won't be as dark and depressing.

Thanks, J, for the info.

I was glad that Nat told Angela what she heard.

Yago based on The Count of Monte Cristo. I'm in!!!

I don't like Ivan Sanchez and one big reason I couldn't hang with Lo Imperdonable. Oh well. Flavio Medina is an incredible actor along with Rosa Maria Bianchi. (hated both despicable characters in YoNo too Gobluefan) Guess they will have to carry the show for Ivan.

Yeah, secret passage! I love this show.

I thought Angela wanted to sell the necklace too. I doubt anyone knows about the secret room/passage/whatever, not even Teresa, or they would have destroyed anything linking Andres to Romulo a long time ago.

If Natalia thinks Violeta is a prostitute, it makes sense for her (as a moral citizen) to dislike Violeta and want to spare her brother. The listening in on Julio and Andres, and then warning Angela was a little metiche-ish.

Am I the only one who confuses Diana Bracho with Rosa Maria Bianchi? They play such similarly horrible mothers.

Kelly

Secret Passage! Hidden room! I'm so excited. We're finally at my preferred level of intrigue and mystery. (I think ALL shows, and life in general, could probably be improved with more sneaky architecture). And if Julio and Isabel are among the very few who know about this place (does anyone else other than Angela?), and they're the only ones who have the necklace key, they have themselves a new handy meetup spot.

Why did Felipe hide the guy? Why not simply let the housekeepers find him dead? Was he in Felipe's room? Even so...everyone in this family seems to have a knack for making a sticky situation much, much worse.

Thanks so muchísimo, Julie. I especially liked your description of the junkies' dereliction: "Felipe and Anastasio smoke opium all day. It must be some really great stuff, because they are just slouching in their seats: not listening to Pink Floyd, not watching Wizard of Oz or some Fellini movie, not even looking at the groovy clouds out the window. Just sitting and being soooooo high."

Julia, I wondered the same thing about Felipe.

I think Felipe doesn't have a proper guest room - he lives in a servants' room. So I guess they were in the guy's room, and surely it would have been better to let the staff find his corpse. (If he's even dead. If he's not dead, he's going to be plenty mad, waking up all scrunched and boxed in.)

I assume Felipe hid the guy because he was panicking and not at his very sharpest, but I'm surprised he was alert enough to think of hiding the guy at all.

The Gran Hotel really doesn't need another stiff, but between Anastasio and Sofia it ought to be a tense evening.

Don't do drugs, kids. If you do, you might needlessly implicate yourself in someone's death.

I'm starting to wonder what's Felipe's yearly average body count. Granted he isn't directly killing anyone, but being around him seems to be a risk factor for premature death.

Sofia doesn't have a sterling record for keeping people alive either.

I am excited about the secret room. It reminds me of a recurring dream I used to have, when I'd find a room, a floor, or an entire wing of my house that I'd somehow forgotten about, beautifully furnished and tastefully decorated in the style of some other decade. Romulo's man-cave ought to be chock full of clues or something. Also probably some flat soda and stale crackers.

I have lots of dreams about places I've spent a lot of time having extra secret rooms, also. My sisters and I were talking about this one time and we apparently have all had dreams that our grandparents' basement had extra rooms. Someday I'd love to own a home with revolving bookcases and secret passages and hidden rooms. It would be SO AWESOME.

And yes, this room gives us lots of possibilities for undiscovered treasures and documents. I'd imagine with a wife like Teresa, Romulo probably kept all his personal stuff hidden there.
