Sueño de Amor (SdA) #19. Monday April 4, 2016. The Evil Ninjas Kidnapped My Mommy!

At a glance

-- La Sombra abducts Esperanza. Finally, things are moving! We are cooking with gas!
-- In other news: Kracy is being her usual Kracy self, Luca is leaving for Járvar at long last, Mario is attracted to a milder version of his castrating wife and Triana Fonseca is dead.

A closer look

Previously on “How I Left Your Mother”: Ricardo drops the “I love you” bomb and his kids’ Wolverine aural faculties picked it up instantly. Igor (that’s Rodrigo to you) is outraged: “You love her? What about Mom?”. He gives Esperanza the stink-eye. Nikita (known in some circles as Selena) says something unintelligible. Sorry, I didn’t catch it; I’m still working on my Russo-Gringo-Spanish.

We’re back at the romantic tête-à-tête of schmaltz and clinginess. A waiter deposits a giant slab of chocolate something on PatoLuca’s table. The kissing step-siblings agree to have a silent parenthesis of staring into each other’s eyes and smelling each other’s aroma, yet we don’t get a respite from the corniness because they just won’t shut up! I swear, there is a starry-eyed 13-year-old girl somewhere, with a giant bag of jelly babies and an endless supply of glitter sharpies churning out the dialogue for this pair. Next!

Erasmo the builder is so poor he can’t afford milk or tomatoes. Ain’t that a biatch! Meanwhile, another builder over on "Pasión y Poder" has so much money he is sparing no expense to woo the daughter of a millionaire. He’s showering her with gifts: flowers, chocolates, tacos al pastor, quesadillas de huitlacoche, a pet turtle and even a fun day at the fair! But I digress.

Adrián has invited himself to dinner at his girlfriend’s humble abode. He tells the orphaned kids who can’t afford milk that he envies them for the luuurve they share. He even fights Erasmo for the last spoonful of grey goop they were having for dinner.

Margarita chaperones study time between Kristel and Pedro and, just like us, notices that these two are excessively happy hugsy touchy-feely during math homework. She smells a romance brewing. After all, experience is the source of all wisdom and "the devil knows more for being old than for being the devil". (Más sabe el diablo por viejo que por diablo).

Erasmo finds out that Adrián is hanging out with them and eating their scarce food because he is now Estrella’s novio. Erasmo’s reaction to the news scares Adrián who scurries off like a scared little mouse. Erasmo was just joking though. He’ll support Estrella’s decision to be novios with Adrián. Whatever makes her happy is fine by him. He gets sad thinking about Kiko’s accident. Oh joy! We’re gonna have a thought for Kiko’s condition in every episode. Kiko tells him not to worry, it was not his fault, etc etc. Soon, Kiko will have his operation and will be able to walk (and dance), run (and dance), crush (aplastar) Erasmo in basketball (and dance). Yay! ¡Abrazo Gallo! Rooster hug!

Ernesto is flirting with Kracy on the phone. Kracy relishes the attention and reports that taking the kids away from Reecherd will be like taking candy from a toddler. Viviana overhears their conversation.

Silvana is smoothing avocado over her annoying face. She is talking to Mario about their daughter’s interest in Adrián but he seems distracted. She scolds him for ignoring her and he goes berserk! He calls her a green monster and a witch! He can’t stand her (¡No te soporto!)! It turns out that he was pretending to doze off and his flipping out was just a fantasy. Thinking Mario is asleep, Silvana leans over his shoulder and tells him she can’t stand him: "¡No te soporto!"

Triana Fonseca is appointed as Esperanza’s security detail. The same agent that La Sombra knocks out cold every time he appears is now the one assigned to protect Esperanza from La Sombra. Tee hee hee. I like these odds.

Ricardo wants to know how Kracy was able to afford that big shot divorce lawyer. She evades answering. The most important thing to her is to take her kids back to LA. Ricardo can’t believe how low Kracy has stooped: “You want to wound me (herir) where it hurts the most: My children!” He accuses her of using their kids like objects, means to blackmail him. Kracy is unfazed: “I know they’re not objects but I’m gonna use them anyway. You know why? Because I want you back! I don’t want you with Esperanza! I love you!” Spoken like a true bunny-boiler. “Don’t you dare call this love, because it isn't! Love is wanting your loved one to grow (crecer). Love is sticking together for better or for worse. Love is sharing life... You have no idea what it means to love!” Droopy Ricky might just as well be talking to a wall because he’s getting about the same reaction from Kracy.

The Three Stooges play with a stadium lamp and provoke a short circuit in Esperanza’s residential community. When Pedro tries to enter the house during the blackout (apagón), he comes face to face with Triana’s gun.

In a brief scene, an unseen Isaac Rey, Paulo and Pamela’s father and the person Ricardo suspects of being La Sombra, informs his kids that Maestros Guerrero and Alegría will no longer be a problem.

Esperanza explains that Triana is a police officer who just moved into their residential community (colonia). Ricardo thought the two women could be friends. Pedro doesn’t buy this cock-and-bull story, especially after his mom prohibits him to go back to his work at the antro. Now more than ever, she opposes his working late at night. She tries to blame her about-face on concern for Pedro’s health and for the repercussions of sleep deprivation, but he doesn't believe her. They get a little worked up during their argument but they kiss and make up right away.

The bestest couple from the bestest telenovela, like, ever, are back from their mawkish date and saying goodbye. Luca is buggering off to Járvar, tomorrow. Finally! Their goodbye drags on like every scene they have together. They exchange compliments: You have the best eyes in the whole wide world (el mundo mundial), the universe and its surroundings (Hey, don’t look at me! I’m just transcribing here!). You have the greatest eyebrows in the whole wide world too. I love your smile. You’re my reason for smiling. Yada yada yada. Don’t you have bags to pack, Luca? Off you go, sonny! He gives her promise rings. They put them on each other’s wedding ring finger. I Love You’s, smooches, sadfaces. OK, Byeeee!

Pato falls asleep on the dining table as she tries to finish off that translation assignment Kracy gave her. Esperanza wakes her up and finds out that this is Kracy’s handy work.

Kracy is remembering Ernesto. Igor can’t sleep. He asks her whether a person can love two people at the same time because his dad said “I love you” to Esperanza.

The next morning, Mario drops Salma off at school. She won’t kiss him goodbye because that’s too embarrassing for her Highness (¡Qué oso!). Mario spots a schoolteacher strutting down the street and gets too excited: Oooh ¡Qué hermosa! She’s working those hip flexors so hard I’m afraid for her balance. Nobody walks like that! It’s like she’s on springs or something. Bow chicka wow wow. “No, no, no! Must think of Silvana, my wife!”, Mario tells himself. Must think of Principal Crazy-Eyes to kill any remotely sexual urges that may arise. He honks the car horn unintentionally and scares off the teacher he was drooling over. He steps out of the vehicle and introduces himself, stuttering. He’s Mario. She’s Felicia. Oh, I remember this one. She has some shades of Silvana’s bossiness in her. Mario definitely has a type. Kitten with a whip.

Overnight and for absolutely no conceivable reason whatsoever, Aranza is suddenly a cartoonish version of what my granny, God rest her soul, thought hippies were. Pato is crying to her BFF over Luca. I wish I cared but I really don’t want to. >>FF.

At the constructora, Luca is acting all magnanimous and refusing to take some of the money Erasmo has come to pay him back. Erasmo insists. Luca takes the money and in turn offers it back to Erasmo, so he can buy something to his siblings on Luca’s behalf. How about paying your employees a living wage so they can afford basic necessities like a roof over their head and milk?

Pato’s annoying bleat over her SuperLuca carries on. Boo-freakin-hoo-hoo. Kracy belittles both Pato and her translation work.

Rodrigo is in a huff. He gives his dad the silent treatment until Esperanza comes over and says good morning. Rodrigo accuses her of being the bad person who is causing his parents to divorce. This is what his Kracy mommy told him. Ricardo promises to take his kids out for a burger tonight and explain everything to them. He tells them how much he loves them. He would lay down his life for them and his love will never ever change.

Kracy fails Pato for her translation homework. Pato yells in front of the whole class that Kracy wants to get back at her (se quiere desquitar conmigo) because Ricardo loves her mother. Brilliant move, Pato! That oughta fix things right up!

At Colegio Vasconcelos, Margarita is telling her pupils that she is in love. Meanwhile, her love interest is having memes created about him, over at Instituto Palacios.

During recess, Esperanza pulls Ricardo into the women’s bathroom because there are no cameras there.

At the constructora, Nacho brings Begoña flowers but she is hugging Luca goodbye and telling him how much she loves him. Nacho gets the wrong idea but Luca reassures him that there is nothing to worry about. He is no competition for Begoña’s affections. Seriously, Luca, those bags aren’t gonna pack themselves. Disappear!

Esperanza berates Ricardo for telling her he loves her in front of his children. She doesn't want them to suffer because of her, so he’d better fix things ASAP! Rodrigo is having a hard time: He’s in a new city, away from his friends, his dad loves another woman and his parents are getting divorced. Oh and Esperanza doesn’t want bodyguards (guaruras). Honestly, this conversation could’ve waited until the evening. Silvana enters the restroom as Esperanza comes out of the toilet cubicle. Esperanza tells her the toilet is plugged and heads out leaving Ricardo stuck inside the cubicle. Felicia, the maestra that met Mario outside school, is gushing over her new male find to another maestra. Silvana warns her she’d better not be talking about a male colleague. The bell rings and Ricardo mumbles to himself: “Here comes the warning (amonestación)!”, referring to his tardiness and the trouble he’ll get into if Félix finds out. Silvana gets suspicious and listens in to the adjoining cubicle. One of the maestras spritzes perfume and Ricardo sneezes. Thankfully, he sneezes like a girl which alleviates Silvana’s doubts. The coast is now clear. Ricardo can finally leave the ladies' room and take Triana’s call. He tells her: "Salí del baño de mujeres como Mijares" ("I came out of the Ladies' room like Mijares". Baño de Mujeres, “Ladies' Bathroom”, is a 90s hit single by singer Mijares). Ugh! All this contrived scene just to use this lame punchline! Anyhoo... Ricardo wants Triana to assign someone else to watch over Esperanza while she tails Kracy tonight. Ricardo is going to dinner with his kids and wants to know whether Kracy will meet someone meanwhile. Triana ought to ask for a raise. Or a transfer. Or both.

Félix intercepts Ricardo in the hall: "Why aren't you in class, Maestro Alegría?" "Sorry, but I have a tummy ache and I had to go to the bathroom", lies Tricky Ricky. "What did you eat?", asks Félix. Tricky Ricky thinks this is a perfect opportunity to take the mickey of musical mustache: "I had a few “garnachas (tortillas with meat filling) de guisado” (ragout, stew), with Habanero chilli sauce, some refried beans, cheese, cream, chorizo and... onion. Yeah, that's what upset my stomach: The onion!” He feigns another tummy ache and rushes to the loo.

Pato hands in her test and leaves. Kracy has already decided that she will fail her.

Nacho apologizes for standing Begoña up the other night. “It doesn’t matter! A few skin welts (ronchas) were more important than me!” He always preferred his friends to her and that has been their main problem.

Pato and Aranza are in the bathroom talking about Kracy and Luca. They hear a little girl crying. They ask if they can help her. When they open the cubicle, there is nobody there. The little girl’s voice starts giggling. Pato and Aranza run out of the ladies’ room screaming.

Saint Luca gives Ernesto parenting advice. >>FF.

Paulo Rey stops Esperanza in the corridor just to wish her a good day. "What a weird kid", she thinks to herself.

Kracy is in Ernesto’s office. Triana alerts Ricardo but there is bad reception where he is, so he can’t hear her well, and his phone battery runs out, to boot. Ricardo, you are the worst undercover agent in the history of undercover agents!

At the Guerreros', Pedro has received his diabetes alert bracelet (pulsera) and is learning how to use it. Esperanza is happy that this new device will help her son monitor his blood sugar more efficiently. She tells him that she received a text message from Ricardo asking that they meet up.

At some burger joint, Ricardo explains to his kids that couples sometimes don’t get along. People change and no longer have the same interests or the same objectives. He explains: “I love your mom but not in the way I loved her before. We have decided to divorce and Esperanza has nothing to do with our decision. Your mom and I have had a lot of disagreements and arguments in the past”. He tells them that the love he and Kracy have for them will remain strong and intact. Rodrigo and Selena will keep seeing their parents all the time. The only thing that will change is that their parents won’t live together anymore.

Esperanza and Pedro are in some badly lit and deserted park somewhere. Apparently, this is where Ricardo arranged to meet her. Ay, Esperancita, I thought you were smarter than this! All of a sudden, the lights go off and so do their cellphones. They hear shots from a silencer gun as a van rushes towards them at full speed. They attempt to run away but it’s too late. Some ninja dudes emerge from the van and take Esperanza away. They shoot the two useless agents of the escolta and punch Pedro. He falls to the ground, his diabetes bracelet warning him that his sugar is getting too high. Triana pulls up in her black sedan. The guy in La Sombra mask is about to shoot Pedro. Triana intervenes and receives the shot intended for blond cubby. La Sombra sets down a black orchid in the palm of her hand. I think this time, , she is a goner. The injured ninjas gather up in the van and off they disappear into the dark night. Pedro is still on the ground. He crawls towards Triana’s inanimate body, screaming “¡Mamá!” into the deadly silent darkness. His diabetes bracelet beeps on with a dangerous insistence.

A quote from the capítulo

“Unas garnachas de guisado con una salsita de habanero, unos frijoles refritos, queso crema, chorizo y... Cebolla. ¡Eso fue lo que me cayó pesado! ¡La cebolla!”
*

*Ricardo pretends he has a tummy ache and when Félix asks what he had for breakfast, Tricky Ricky takes the mickey: “A few garnachas with meat ragout, accompanied by Habanero chilli sauce, refried beans, cheese, cream, chorizo and... onion. Yeah, that's what upset my stomach: The onion!”

Hey Patio Pals! Finally some action! I'll add the quote and vocabulary list tomorrow (Hopefully before I post the discussion page for Tuesday's episode). Too sleepy now and gotta be up in 4 hours. Night night :)

Thanks for a very detailed recap.

There's no doubt love makes some people not only blind, but stupid.

Pedro belongs in the Gallo family. When he enters Kristel's room after Jacobina ope the door for him he looks very cocky.

I am sure you loved Kracy at some point, said Esperanza, to marry her.
It was a win-win situation, I guess, because if he was in jail, marrying her could help him get out sooner, get his papers. I don't know what was in it for Kracy, Oh, I get it, she was in that thing with rescuing animals, doh!

Yes! Patoluca ordered a huuuge piece of chocolate cake that, BTW looked scrumptious and NEVER EVEN TOUCHED IT!! What a waste!

The Gallos ate beans and eggs but Estrella can afford a smartphone bill? She's is not even working, how does she do it?

When Triana's call ended, Selena said the phone's battery was out, but then Esperanza said he sent her a text message. WTH? Did he call her before getting Triana's call? Please someone explain that to me!

Pedro got a kick in the nuts, at this rate between the sugar and his mom's stupid decisions, he will end up neutered! Help, Kracy, there's another animal here that could go extinct!

Thanks, Nandicta, for the great recap.

Yes, finally some action. It took only until capítulo 19. It is only capítulo 19 . . . ? Really? Could have fooled me . . . It seems this has been on much longer.

Will the move to one hour earlier be the coup de grâce for this novela?

I have to say it once: I hate this being on an hour earlier since I like to watch it in real time. I am not a happy camper.

Anyway, the kidnapping plot was a good idea. Too bad Triana had to get shot.

Better shot than being yelled at with no real reason. I am glad because it was getting on my nerves seeing Ricardo yell at her all the time, when he should have been doing more.

Good one, Pablo. He yelled at her so much it made me wonder how else she had disappointed him in the past, if she had disappointed him in the past. His reaction to her always seemed to be beyond the pale for what she had done or not.

Superb, Nandicta."glitter sharpies churning out the dialogue for this pair" because her little sister is busy writing P&P. I like the spill-overs. Especially your unvarnished take on 'turtles'? It just dawsned on me reading this that he is actually Mutamt Ninja Love Turtle.

Thanks

Fantastic Nandicta. Smartly written and oozing with astute observations and wry wit.

"Mario is attracted to a milder version of his castrating wife", "...kissing step-siblings agree to have a silent parenthesis", "Silvana is smoothing avocado over her annoying face" were great but "Spoken like a true bunny-boiler" was my hands down favorite.

I was surprised at the shoot out and like you Jarifa, was sorry Triana was wounded. She is giving all and seemingly receiving nothing in return.

Ricardo's explanation of what is transpiring with his love life to children left me flat. We should really want him with Espe, but he leaves me rather cold. She deserves more. As does dear Mario. Wouldn't it be grand if he left Sil and started a new life with someone who actually loves him (rather than barely tolerates him)?

Right now, this new time is hard for me to watch. I saw some of this but thankfully you filled in all the blanks perfectly Nandicta.

Diana

You turn on spell check, it makes you look foolish. You turn it off, it makes you look retarded. I hope it is the spell check.:-)

Hey beautiful peeps! Thanks for stopping by! Finally a little bit of action in SdA, but unfortunately, it looks like hardly anyone is watching this show.

-- Pablo, regarding your query about Ricardo's text message, I think that La Sombra was the one who sent it to Esperanza. Ric didn't arrange to meet Espe, it was a trap. Even the bad reception and the fact that his cellphone battery suddenly ran out seem to be La Sombra's handy work. I don't know much about technology but I think that hackers can "hijack" a mobile network. Maybe that's not the correct term but surely some kind of maneuver to prevent somebody or a group of people from using their cellphones is doable.

As regards the Gallo family's Dickensian poverty, you are right! That whole business of "I can't afford milk or proper crockery but my little sister has a smartphone" is just ridonculous! Erasmo's poverty is so exaggerated, it is laughable!

-- Jarifa: , I couldn't agree more, the time move is the coup de grâce to this struggling show. I'm sorry that you are being inconvenienced by this change. In all fairness, I feel that, so far, SdA is a lot more enjoyable than MCET was. To me, anyway. Yes MCET had the fantastic Silvia Navarro-Jorge Salinas pairing, but I fastforwarded through most of it, watching only the scenes where these two leads were. Little Luzecita (the girl playing Selena in SdA) was absolutely adorable, while the twins and Pablo Montero were tolerable. Everything else was just unwatchable drivel, as far as I'm concerned. In comparison, I hardly fastforward at all during SdA. I did it maybe 3 or 4 times tops. Even the stooges are alright. Though Pato and Luca annoy me, I do get a kick out of their scenes because they are brimming with unintentional comedy (the corny dialogue, the sad puppy eyes, the little details like that ginormous chocolate cake that they both ignored, etc.). The novela is barely picking up but this time change will kill it. I fear that our Patio might be reduced to just the four recappers! Gosh, I really hope not! It would be sad to lose our faithful Patio regulars Diana, Julia, Tofie, Emeraldrose, Nina and Doris, because their comments and observations are so astute and funny! Besides, what's the point of snarking if there is noone out there to share it with. Oh well, I'm probably getting ahead of myself. We'll see how things go from here on out.

-- Kirbo: ¡Bienvenido! Thank you for swinging by the SdA Patio! Maybe you'll be tempted to watch this TN after PyP ends. Your comments always crack me up and I can only imagine how hilarious it would be for these SdA characters to get the "Kirbo Treatment"! Feel free to drop in any time! :)

-- Diana, I actually liked Ric's conversation with his children about the divorce. I felt that he used the standard talking points usually employed for this situation and it looked like the kids responded well enough. However, I totally understand why Ricardo leaves you cold. The explanation for his two-decade-long disappearance has been dragged out for too long. It is killing whatever semblance of galán characteristics initially set out. As for Mario, I had thought that Arleth, Ernesto's secretary, could be his future love interest, because I noticed she gave him a "look" the other day. Felicia is the teacher that falsified Pato's grades and picked on her on several occasions. I fail to see how she is much better than Silvana.

The quote and vocabulary are up. Tonight's quick summary / discussion page is scheduled to be published at 8pm EDT (fingers crossed, I managed to get that Blogger gimmick right). I'm traveling this week and won't have internet access so I'll catch you guys next Monday. Enjoy the rest of your week! Nos vemos.

Thanks, in advance, Nandicta. Have a good trip!

You're right! I was so concerned in picking on Ricardo that I totally forgot this was a trap and of course, Ricardo is not going to leave the kids alone to go see Esperanza, or taking them with him.

This is awesome Nandicta

"Kitten with a whip"

I'm hanging in there but barely. My tolerance level for bad is very low after TSTSNBN. Biggest problem here is the show and characters have taken themselves too seriously. One thing I liked with MCET was Isabela (Mayrín Villanueva) giving us a wink occasionally that neutralized the stupid somewhat.

I don't like any of the good guy characters except Triana but Ricky rages at her, got her beat up and shot, so I guess they're trying to tell me something.

Gimme more ErNasto and Kracy but if I were keeping score they better get nasty fast, Tricky Ricky got a jump on them in the destroying an innocents life category.

Nandicta, hope all goes well with your trip!

I may miss some scenes here and there but I am planning on staying with this. The recaps are wonderful and the patio is fine company.

I learn so much here!

Diana

Never fear; I am too big a fan of snark to jump overboard on this one. It's worth watching just to fully appreciate these excellent recaps! Thanks mucho, Nandicta. I have no idea how you're managing to do so many recaps, but they are certainly not lacking in quality from the quantity. Have a great trip!

I think maybe Triana faked her own death to get away from Ric's abuse. Why is he always so mean to her? It's not like HE is doing anything useful. Perhaps Triana found La Sombra and said, "you know what? You'd make a WAY better boss. How about I join your organization? Don't worry; Tricky Ricky will never catch us."

Although I also have to wonder why this art theft gang is even bothering with bothering Ric. He's obviously inept. So why not just ignore him and go on their merry way stealing art?

The beeping blood sugar watch was a nice dramatic touch, I must say. Adds to the urgency of Pedro's rescue.

I've been aggravated all along that Saint Luca is SO BENEVOLENT to the employees, yet apparently feels no need to pay them living wages. A guy who works hard all day should be able to afford food. Although I, too, wonder how Estrella has that phone. A local philanthropic organization that agrees with whining middle schoolers everywhere that they will JUST DIE, ABSOLUTELY DIE, IF THEY DON'T HAVE A COOL PHONE EVERYONE HAS ONE I DIDN'T ASK TO BE BORN *doorslam*?

Even if Kracy weren't determined to fail Pato, she'd probably fail English class anyway because who can understand Kracy's English? Are we really supposed to believe she's a gringa, or is she supposed to be an immigrant from elsewhere? Maybe she's a deeply undercover Russian spy.

Does Paulo and Pamela's father really talk to his own kids through a voice disguiser? No wonder they're messed up.

True. I would like to give Kracy a spanish test and she how bad she fails!!

I know my budget and I know what I can and can not afford. That's why I don't have cable and smartphone. I cover both with internet. MagicJack is good for me and if someone want to contact me, that can wait until I get home. Leave a message and I will call you back. See? That way I save and I am not constantly bothered with phone calls during the day, LOL!

Oh! And I eat everything I want!!

The worst part of Espe's kidnapping is that probably Luca will decide he needs to stay with Pato in her time of distress, and he won't go away! After all these long tedious goodbyes!

Pato and Luca do inspire me, though. Last night their sugary schmooping inspired me to wonder whether I had anything for dessert and wander off to the kitchen. Didn't find anything so good as that decadent looking cake they ignored, though.

It is always disappointing when there is nothing all that good to satisfy that sweet tooth with! ; )

Oh, but what luck! It's a birthday treats day at work and I got a chocolate cupcake!

Hey! Hey!
