El Hotel de los Secretos #60, 4/20/16: Diego Plays Hero, But Ends Up the Victim of the GKK

Olegario gives Elisa an offer she is certainly not going to refuse—lots and lots of Harriet Tubmans, in exchange for her securing him the hotel shares of her “grandson.” He’s working on keeping Belen out of the way and securing Andres’ shares of the hotel. The reason? There’s black gold, aka OIL, underneath the hotel, and he and his gringo investors want to tear down the hotel to get at it.

Over breakfast, Ole assures Belen and Andres that he is no murderer and Ayala has no reason to suspect him. Belen has a hard time believing Felipe is a murderer either. Andres slips his leash and goes to serve himself some coffee that’s nearby, but everyone jumps in to say that’s not his place and tries to make him accept being served. He gets frustrated with all of this, and with Ole and Belen. He thought they were trying to get the baby back, but Ole seems more concerned about the inheritance/money! He leaves the table. Belen tells Ole that she agrees with Andres about getting the baby back, ASAP.

Isabel frets to Diego about rescuing her brother. Diego promises to rescue Felipe, all on his own that night during the money drop. He kisses her, basking in the glow of his new hero status. She claims she is going to the hospital to put the finger in formaldehyde, and runs into Julio and Cecilia on the way. Cecilia makes sure to rub herself on Julio and call him my love, before she exits. Isa gets pissy with Julio, and orders him to go with her to the police station. She bitchily tells him it’s his life and he can do with it what he wants (so why is she giving him attitude?), then tells herself that the only way to move forward is to forget (her love for Julio).

Sofia, looking more calm and collected than I’ve ever seen her (wow!), points out the irony of her mother popping more “remedies” than she (the addict) ever did, to stay calm about Felipe’s kidnapping. Then she sharply picks up on Doc Vic familiarly calling her mother, Teresa. When her husband saunters into the dining room with his horrible mother and another woman on his arm, she calmly approaches him and orders him to come with her to talk. Alfredo obeys. She points out that he asked her for time and distance, which she gave him, and he’s paying her back by disrespecting her by gallivanting in front of her face with another woman. She points out the effort she’s making, even being attentive to the baby, and tells him she loves him, before giving him a parting kiss on the cheek. Alfredo seems genuinely touched and affected.

Ayala tells Isa and Julio that the finger is NOT Felipe’s, and in fact is a woman’s finger. Ayala’s theory is that Felipe is in on the kidnapping/ransom scheme. Dagoberto thinks he’s run away because he murdered Romulo. Julio points out that Felipe disappeared before the Andres reveal, and the reveal of Romulo’s murder, so he wouldn’t know about all that to decide to escape. Dago still thinks the timing of his “kidnapping” is convenient. Isa asks Ayala to go with Diego to the money drop that night to protect him and Felipe. Ayala just asks that they not reveal to Teresa what they learned about the finger-- otherwise she wouldn’t be inclined to deliver the money.

Felipe isn’t happy with how many men, guns, and bullets are going to the money drop. Jorge tells him not to worry. He’ll be safe and sound with his mommy soon. S/he just wants Felipe’s assurance that he’ll keep his mouth shut about the gang and their location. Looking more like they are lovers parting, and desiring to kiss, Felipe looks Jorge in the eyes and promises him/her that he’ll keep silent.

The Gold Knife Killer gets ready to go hunting again! On a table covered by a black cloth, we see the black gloved hand of the killer unwrap the gold knife from a black napkin, which sits next to a well-polished candle holder and an elegant pen stand.

Alfredo is tenderly holding the baby and showing him some birds that come out at night from the window, when he spots Andres approaching Sofia on the front lawn. Sensing trouble, he hands the baby to the wet-nurse, and runs down to the lawn. Meanwhile, Andres is learning from a very cold Sofia that he and Isabel were the only ones who never knew that Andres was really an Alarcon. She starts berating him, since she’s sure he wants to be welcomed with open arms into the family now and/or wants to get his inheritance. Andres sets her straight. The only thing he wants is HIS son. He points out how unfair their treatment of Belen was—first taking one child, and then stealing the other. At the mention of the poor, dead Baby #1, Sofia starts to get agitated. Alfredo arrives just in time to shield her from Andres’ accusations, and to demand that Andres leave his family alone. He takes Sofia inside, his arms protectively around her. Andres sits alone on the lawn, and gets startled by a noise behind him. He runs off to check on Belen.

Ben comes to see Angela. With head bowed, and tears in his eyes, he tells Angela that he’s glad she didn’t move upstairs. It brings him peace to know she’s nearby.

Even though she’s supposedly trying to forget him, Isabel just can’t stay away from Julio. She goes to his room, and invites him along on another adventure. This time, she wants them to go to the money drop. Julio’s all set to go, with bells on, but they are thwarted by Ceci, who is standing at Julio’s door when they exit. She was waiting for him in her rooms—but if the mountain won’t come to her, she’ll go to it. Isabel leaves alone and defeated. Julio just looks annoyed and disappointed.

Jorge’s gang check their maps and make their plans for the money grab. Felipe warns them that canny Ayala will likely be there to foil their plans. One of the gang suggests that the best way to ensure their safety is to take Felipe with them and use him as a human shield. Neither Jorge nor Felipe seem happy with this plan, but it’s agreed upon.

Andres finds Belen in their rooms, and hugs her tight. He reminds her that tonight is a full moon, when the GKK strikes, and he was worried about her. He’d die if anything happened to her. Belen laughs off his fears. He asks if she would ever betray him. She assures him she never would. He’s all she has in the world. They get busy. Nat sadly overhears when passing with her cleaning cart outside their room.

Jacinto and Diego arrive on horseback at the money drop site, while Jorge, Felipe and the gang watch. Diego sends Jacinto forward to deposit the money. From afar, Felipe identifies who he is to the gang. Jorge thinks this will end badly—in death.

Julio meets Isa in the garden and they head off together to the money drop. We see that he’s locked Ceci up in his room and taken off. She’s NOT pleased.

Ayala, Dago, and a band of armed men approach the money drop site. Diego leaves a lit flare next to the money box to signal the drop. Jorge’s gang approaches with Felipe on horseback. All the players take their places, as Teresa fervently prays in her rooms at the hotel. The gang grabs the box and flees, Felipe is set free, and Ayala’s men get ready to jump into action. No one notices the shadow of the GKK. As soon as Jorge and his/her gang take off, Ayala and his men emerge from the shadows and start shooting. Ayala’s men also point their guns at clueless Felipe, as he’s the prime suspect in his father’s murder. Isa and Julio arrive, and everyone’s attention is drawn to Isa when she calls out her brother’s name. This gives the GKK the perfect opportunity to plunge his knife into Diego’s side and make an easy escape. They all are horrified to see Diego fall to the ground. Bleeding, unconscious Diego is taken back to the hotel by Isa, Julio and Jacinto. Isa wakes Matilde to get her assistance trying to save Diego.

Felipe doesn’t understand why he, the victim, is being held in jail and interrogated. Ayala makes clear he doesn’t quite believe Felipe was a kidnapping victim, but informs him he’s really there as a suspect in his father’s murder. Felipe tells Ayala about the night he had the violent argument with his father. Felipe had too much to drink. He and Romulo argued and struggled on the lower landing of the stairs. Romulo called him a no-good; Felipe called him a hypocrite and told him that he hated him. In their struggle, he accidentally threw Romulo down the stairs. Realizing what he had done, he ran to his father, cradled him in his arms, and called for help while asking his father’s forgiveness. Later, Teresa ordered Felipe to remain in his room, and wouldn’t let him see his father. He sat in the hallway in front of his father’s door that whole night, but never saw his father alive again. He was told that the fall caused a stroke (derrame cerebral) that eventually killed Romulo.

Jacinto tells the below stairs staff, all in their jammies, about his “heroic” adventures that night. They are all fascinated, but don’t quite believe his version of his role in the events. Lupe comes in just in time to hear Jacinto brag about how his patron, Diego, gave him a gun. Lupe breaks up the group, and Jacinto takes off in a huff because no one believed how badass he is.

Ayala confirms to Felipe that indeed Romulo’s death certificate says he died of a stroke. He asks who else entered Romulo’s room that night. Felipe reveals that Teresa never left the room, and she only let Diego and Doctor Santamaria in. She then ordered Felipe to leave, telling him his father was no longer able to hear him. Felipe left the hotel to drink himself into oblivion. When he returned, it was to attend his father’s wake.

Felipe cries from the guilt, and Ayala finally lets him off the hook by telling him his father was murdered with arsenic. Dago adds Ole’s accusations about Felipe being the poisoner, and the fact that he purchased a LOT of arsenic around that time. Felipe admits to buying the arsenic. He and (now dead) Garrido, Diego’s assistant, sold it for non-murderous purposes. He doesn’t provide more details. Ayala decides Felipe is too shady to set free. He’ll have to cool his jets in a jail cell for a while, at the very least for faking his kidnapping and extorting money, which IS a crime.

Doc Vic, Isa, Mati, and Julio, all work hard to save Diego’s miserable life. Cipriano, one of Ayala’s men, also helps.  Teresa enters, and goes into a panic about Felipe’s whereabouts. Isa quickly informs her that he’s safe, in jail--being held on suspicion of Romulo’s murder.

Jorge’s gang celebrates their victory with much whooping and even a fun song about Felipe, but Jorge doesn’t look so happy. One of Jorge/Manuela’s brothers notices her melancholy and sees her about take off her disguise. He questions her about her feelings for Felipe, and demands she swear on the memory of their parents that she is NOT going to see Felipe. Manuela reminds her bro that s/he is the jefe of the family. Her brother says to her that, “The head (el jefe) of a family always remains close to make sure nothing and no one harms their family!” He points out that they already have the money, so what more does she want with Felipe? If she’s going to see him, it’s only for herself. She’s acting like a silly little girl who’s in love, putting everyone else in danger to fulfill her own whims. Manuela concedes his points, and decides to stay put. “Eso es Jorge Arenas!” Her brother is happy and proud, but clearly Jorge/Manuela is sad to give up her catrín.

Sorry if this isn't as detailed and sparkly as usual. Jet lag is still kicking my butt (hard to stay awake past 9pm), and I leave tomorrow morning for a work trip to Florida. I'll try to check in on my phone. Please feel free to add any details I might have missed or gotten wrong with my foggy brain.

And BIG, BIG thanks to Nandicta and Anita for filling in for me while I was away, providing us with their witty, wonderful recaps. I really appreciate it, and enjoyed reading them immensely. Gracias, amigas!

Vivi, thank you for a wonderful recap per usual. Welcome back!

So much to like tonight:
Felipe used as a "human shield"
Jorge/Manuela telling Felipe that once freed if he opened his "hocico" (snout) about anything he would die.
Felipe in custody.
Felipe in jail with no blankie to keep him warm.
Whoopsie: Matilde asking Isabel about Ayala's condition before being concerned about Diego.

An eternal telenovela lesson: never argue with someone on a staircase.

I sure hope that Jorge/Manuela and his/ her posse do not disappear. I want to hear his/her story.

This was great Vivi, no reason to be apologizing. Kudos to you to putting this together while still getting back into your time zone!

I agree Jarifa, the Manuala character keeps intriguing me and I do want to know more about her and how she came to become an outlaw. And the head of a gang to boot. Are they some type of Robin Hood type gang? And why?

Poor Felippe. He just keeps getting the short end of the lollipop. But in telling his version of the Night of the Staircase, do all points head back to Teresa or Diego offing the husband after all?

Color me surprised that the GKK targeted Diego, but I don't expect that idiot's sorry butt to die off just yet. TO get the lovebirds together, he does need to go six feet under ( I don't think jail is good enough), but seems rather soon unless he's been an an evil red herring through this whole story, only abetting Teresa in her evil plans.

The writers cleverly had a lot of people show up at the drop who we then could rule out as the GKK. Darn, Jacinto was one of them. That little creep needs to be put out of his misery. So Benjy, Angela? That Benjy visit to Angie was just bizarre.

I was Andres was a little smarter/savvy on putting two and two together.

And can we just have Cece stay in that locked room?

Daisynjay

Thanks Daisynjay and Jarifa for the great comments. Now that we know that Felipe thought he had killed his father, it explains a lot of his self destructive behavior. I wonder if we'll see some sort of change in him now that he knows someone else murdered his father and Teresa, Diego, and Doc Santamaria were all complicit in covering it up and throwing the blame on him.

The only thing that bothers me is that it would be oh so convenient for Diego just to die and leave Isabel the available widow. Just seems way too easy.

I JUST started reading the recap - so far, I have to say two things:

1. Welcome back, Vivi!
2. Harriet Tubmans! YEAH!!

One more thought: someone in the Alarcon family needs to ask, "WHY DO WE HAVE THESE STAIRS???" They need to take out that mess and replace it with a nice ramp and an elevator. Even bat-poles would be safer.

Vivi, the recap was plenty sparkly and detailed enough. I haven't been jetlagged in a long time, but from what I recall of it, I could barely remember my own name.

Assuming that there is significance to the order of the scenes, I think the point of the Benji/Angela scene was to eliminate Benji as the GKK. First we see the GKK wearing a black glove, then Benji talking to Angela in his white gloves, then later the GKK strikes. Would Benji really put on black gloves to lovingly caress his knife, then change into white gloves to say two sentences to Angela, then change back into his black gloves to commit murder? Granted he's a weird guy, but is he that weird?

While I don't approve of mental health care workers (especially imposters) taking advantage of their patients, I have to say, the new Sofia really is improved. Maybe a chance to dry out, and a roll in the hay, really were all she needed.

Gracias, Vivi.

No, it's too early for Diego to bite the dust. He won't die until the finale. As to who the GKK is, we've just eliminated quite a few suspects. The hand looked a little too elegant to be Benjamin's, but it has to belong to someone with access to those gold knives. Did anyone recognize that pen set?

Cece and Jacinto need to be put out of our misery and Sofia needs to start kicking butt.

Well, in past TN's, some of the worst murderers and evil minions hid behind the mask of sanctity and religion as some sort of means to either justify themselves or to try and get forgiveness as they committed their crimes. Right now, that sort of behavior, leaving out Benjy ( great point with the gloves), points straight to Angela or Teresa. Or both. To me, the GKK is not Rom's poisoner.

What's so disgusting is that it was convenient for Teresa to have Felippe believe all this time he had caused his father's death. Unless you are seriously guilty of some aspect of evil yourself, how could you do that? And now she cries he could be kidnapped. That woman is seriously messed up.

And then there is Lupe. I forgot, could he be accounted for last night? He would do anything for Angela, and that include stopping her son because his behavior was hurting her.

Daisynjay

In Teresa's defense, she may not have known about the poisoning, so it's quite possible that she really believed that Rom's death was Felipe's fault. That doesn't mean she doesn't still care about him.

I don't think the poisoner is the GKK either. And the person who tried to kill Andres with an overdose of morphine might even be a third person, though it would make sense for it to be the poisoner.

Whatever the case, I wasn't sad when Diego got stabbed. I do think it's too early for him to die, but while he's bedridden I'd like Belen to smother him with a pillow the way he threatened to do to her baby.

Thanks Julie, Urban, and Daisynjay. Yeah, I think the three docs will save Diego. He's still too wrapped up in many of our plots to die now.

Teresa loves her children the way a selfish spoiled little rich girls loves her dolls. She will use and abuse them as she sees fit, but as soon as they break, she starts crying, even though she's the one who broke them.

-Vivi (from the airport gate)

Safe travels (again), Vivi.

Vivi (Gulliver) DC- I haven't had a chance to see the latest epi yet. And, I won't read ahead since it spoils the visual experience for me. But, thanks ahead of time for what I know will be an enjoyable review of our gallavanting galants.

BTW, the highlights from my night are posted and credit given. Thanks again for you trooper recappers! Much appreciated!

In general, I am not going to be happy if Diego, Teresa or Belen are rehabilitated.

Jardinera, I expect all three of those miscreants to die. Diego and Belen pretty much have to in order to set their spouses free. And Teresa seems to have a heart condition, so I think we're being prepared for her death too.

I was thinking last night, as Natalia was pushing her cart past Belen and Andres' door, that she deserves better than a second-place finish. So even if Belen dies and Andres begs Natalia for another chance, I hope she ends up with someone else - someone who will put her first.

Great Vivi and welcome back. You're doing better than I. On my return from asia it takes me a week to 10 days to readjust to the time difference and usually a babbling mess the first few days.

"Andres slips his leash"

I hate it when TN's kill a partner so the intended can have at them, especially if they do so with Diego. Isabela married the guy, they get along well and she is not repulsed by his touch. She has no cause to be angry because of CeCe and cannot refall into the arms of her husband (she never left Diego's bed) because she is forced to forget Julio. Isabela wanted her cake and eat it too just like her father.

Vivi--You continue to amaze me. Wonderful recap and your body and mind still in turmoil. I regret I can't comment daily on Hotel, but I'm following the story like an ant following a trail of honey. Vivi--your analogy to Teresa treating her children like dolls is perfect. You could also include her getting tired of playing with them and throwing them in a box and forgetting them.

Someone, anyone, Nanette (?) please make us a list of Victims, including the quick and the dead, and the manner of their dispatch (or salvation). I'd already forgotten there were two attempts on Andres--the bonk on the head on his wedding day and administering an overdose of morphine. Could we also have a separate list of possible suspects in each? I NEED A SCORE CARD!

Like many of you are guessing, the earlier GKK murders were just a warm up for the Hotel victims, but he/she was successful in his first set, off campus, so to speak, and unsuccessful in his Hotel victims.

The writers have certainly done a great job. I only wish Olegario hadn't been brought in at the last minute. He should have been around earlier, wooing Teresa, or pretending to, maybe, so we could hate them both.

I wonder if Matilde knowing Ignacio has anything to do with the price of eggs, or is it just to throw Ayala off his stride.

Hmmm. The dead finger belongs to a woman.....it can't get any spookier than that.

I actually like that Olegario came this late. I was iffy at first for his late appearance but then again putting him earlier would result in tedious plots. I feel that almost anything was paced good in the show except Ewgenia . The characters I miss the most now are Mercedes and her dad. God was he a badass! I guess the writers were trying to avoid typical cliches since if they gave a weird character flashbacks it would either mean that he is next on the hitlist or he is up to no good.

I am confused. In an earlier episode, allegedly Christina was given a letter by Romulo which Belen got hold of after Christina was dead. (Did Belen kill her?) Also how could he give Christina the letter if Teresa and Diego remained in the room with him? Also the doctor is looking strange to me. Previously he was lurking outside a telegraph office and took a telegraph from the station master. He then went to the hotel and started ingratiating himself with the family. I wonder if he could be the GKK.....

Sandydoc, if Cristina's story is true, Romulo could have given her the letter a few days before he fell down the stairs. Since he was gradually being poisoned, he would have been sickly for a while. In fact, in such a weakened condition, it might not even have been Felipe's fault that he fell down the stairs. He could have collapsed on his own, even if Felipe hadn't been there.

Gracias Vivi, welcome back, where are you heading to in FL?

At least we can eliminate Diego as the GKK, just wish we could eliminate him permanently.

I was happy to see Sophia standing up for herself maturely to Alfredo after he came parading in with the other woman and his mother. She has certainly changed after her stay at the "retreat for nervous ladies". My only question is if she actually slept with the faux priest or if that was a fantasy of hers? If she did actually sleep with him, now is there a chance that she could have gotten pregnant?

Cynthia - interesting question if she really slept with him! I assume she did. If she didn't, they probably would have clued us in by showing her snapping out of a daydream or something. Right? (Maybe?)

As to whether she is pregnant, well, I can only laugh because in my experience, a soap opera or telenovela diagnosis of sterility is little more than a mean joke. The lousy Dr. Santamaria declared her sterile as a result of her miscarriage and/or whatever clumsy things he did to treat it, and Dr. Vicario seemed to take that diagnosis at face value - but I don't think he ever examined Sofia in much detail himself. So I've just been waiting for her to wind up pregnant.

If Sofia is already pregnant, she can still get away with it if she goes to bed with Alfredo very soon. Otherwise, things could get a bit... awkward.

I've landed in Ft. Lauderdale! And had a major small world moment. The lady sitting next to me on the plane said she knew me, then revealed she reads/comments on the blog and recognized me from my pic. You all know her as Yola. We had a great convo the whole way about the blog, education, and life in general. Love meeting Caray peeps in real life! Gotta meet my ride. Until later!

Oh, Sandydoc, I had the same thought about Cris. Not only could the letter pass could have taken place before the fall down the stairs, it also could have happened after Felipe left and Teresa and her minions took advantage of the moment to go plot/chat somewhere else.

The timeline is certainly a little confusing, plus we know that Cristina wasn't always totally honest about things.

Thanks Vivi!! And welcome back! The Universe is full of nice little surprises--you sitting next to a CarayCarayite on the plane!

NOW the GKK killer can't hit his/her mark. The ONE victim we would have been happy to have him/her off and s/he can't get the job done.

Loved Mati asking Isa about Ayala before Diego bit. I didn't understand what was being said but the look on Isa's face had me thinking that's what must have happened.

Julie: I was thinking the same thing about Nat last night. I feel bad for her being second choice even though they are a perfect couple. Let's hope there's a bit of a time jump at the end so that it isn't so awkward--assuming they are destined to be together.

Anita: I love making lists, but that kind of detail is better left to someone like Vivi or UA. I'm sure to muddle it. ;)

Nanette

Nanette--If I weren't so consumed, time-wise by Un Camino, I would go through your Hi-Lo lists and pull the victim and suspected perpetrator characters out. If I had known how intriguing all these killings and attempted killings were going to be, I would have started the list at the very beginning with Don Romulo (you know I love lists, too.)

Vivi
I live in Fort Lauderdale, how long are you going to be here, do you have any non business free time? I'd love to take you to lunch & discuss El Hotel.

Dont follow this show myself since I've seen the original but what I read from this (wonderful!!) recap is that it's turning out to be completely different!!

I really enjoy how theyve changed a few plot points and kept some, it helps to keep the story going and really works for the novela format.

Also there was no Jorge/Manuela in the Spanish version (at least that I remember) and I'm really sad there wasnt! This seems to be a really good storyline.

I wish more people would give this show a chance. I've seen so many bashful youtube comments and online posts, as I've tried to stay in the know :/

Really love Jorge Poza in this and Irene Azuela is gorgeous! At times I feel like Erick Elias can be a bit too stiff but he's doing alright too!

Hope this show gets the recognition it deserves!

Tom boy
This novela is very high on my list of the best along with
La reina del sur
Amor Real
Alborada

My worst list is a little longer.

It doesn't even have any of my favorite heartthrobs in it, however everyone is doing such a super job of acting.

Variopinta- Ooh! That would be so cool. I should have plenty of time after my morning meeting and before my aft e noon flight. Lunch perhaps? Email me. I'll be on a computer soon and will also try to contact you.

Thanks Vivi, what a great story about running into a caraymate.

The GKK wants Diego dead. Who wants Diego dead?

Who doesn't want Diego dead? I think even the characters who don't actively want him dead wouldn't mind if he just disappeared. He's burned and blackmailed too many people.

Isabel acts to his face as though she likes him, but she still lies to him constantly and I'm sure she wouldn't miss him if he were gone. Nobody genuinely likes or admires him except maybe Jacinto, a proven idiot.

I realize there's a big jump from "wouldn't mind if he disappeared" to "stabbed him in an area that's full of angry men and guns," but some of those seemingly lukewarm people may have motivations that we're not privy to.

If we ask, "who wants Diego, Pablo and Andres dead" (all attacked by GKK) then the question is much harder and points even more to someone with a hidden motivation.

I'm glad we're in ultimas semanas, because my brain is starting to hurt!

My suspicions still lie in Benjamin who is my main suspect or Dr V . He has always been acting weird so he could have changed his gloves with no problems . I just don't have any other suspects. It could have been Teresa but she was reading that poem when Diego was being assaulted but that could have just been an afterimage ( The poem was written before Tere went to hunt) UGH.

I have to agree with the brain hurting. It didn't hurt so much during Yo no Creo which was also a mystery but it was more of a psychodrama El Hotel is more like the Mexican X Files .

By "he" I meant Benjamin. Besides Dr V could have had gloves in his case that can hide fingerprints. He seems quite educated enough to be able to hide his tracks. Besides Ben is crucial to the Hotel's schedule and his absence would be quickly noticed. Dr V had a lot of free time on his hands before he entered House Alarcon.

The thing that's so funny about fingerprints in this story is that we're looking at a period where lots of people wore gloves much of the time, even when not committing crimes. Heck, gloves are part of the uniform for many of the male employees at the hotel, so you won't find their fingerprints on anything!

I don't think the GKK was trying to kill Andres. I think he simply startled the horse who then trampled on Andres.

I thought Pablo was shot by Diego.
