It's a hard knock life: Yago #2 05/03/16

Ok, here we go, I'm going to break down the recap into two parts, the first part will recap everything we learned about Sara last night and the second part will cover everything else, I hope not to miss anything but if I do please feel free to add to it in the comments section.

Sara:

We start our episode off with a flashback to Omar's brutal beat down in jail. The young man was set up for theft and murder by his two best friends and his future wife, we don't yet know his friends motivations, but I'm guessing they betrayed him simply out of greed. Sara on the other had a different motives, will learning her background make the patio more willing to forgive her and see past her sins? Only time will tell.

Sara was raised by her father who taught her that life is a game, everyone you deal with is an adversary, an in the game there can only be one winner. Life is made for winners, and there's no room for the weak. What her father failed to tell Sara is that sometimes you can win at the game while also losing everything you hold dear.

Sara and her father are thieves, she picks up men in hotel bars and then with the assistance of her father cleans out their hotel safe deposit boxes. She hates having to do this but she goes along with her dad, it seems that this is the way they make their living. One night Sara runs her scam and takes off with a huge amount of cash, somehow the man she stole from finds her, and beats and rapes her. The rape is the last straw for Sara, she packs a suitcase, kisses her younger sister goodbye and takes off.

Sara ends up renting a room in a kind woman's house, this woman helps Sara land a job in a casino as a receptionist, on her first day on the job Sara spots Omar, who is working at the hotel as an assistant for the architect that's doing a remodeling job at said casino. The woman that's training Sara tells her not to set her eyes on Omar, the young man is only interested in work, Sara is then set up on a blind date with the woman's nephew.

While on her date Sara bumps into Omar who introduces himself and expresses interest in Sara, their relationship grows and becomes serious enough that Sara is seen having dinner with Omar and his family. One night Sara comes home to find that her father has found her, she did not run away far enough to escape him and that's a shame. Father has come with news, Sara's younger sister Ambar is ill, she has an illness that will kill her if she does not get proper treatment, the operation that the young girl needs costs $100,000 and can only be preformed in the USA. The good news is that her father has heard of a "little job" that can help them get the money for Ambar's treatment. Sara at first objects, she is done stealing, but her father tells her that without money for the treatment Ambar will die. Father breaks down the job for her, everything is already planned: they will rob the casino that Sara works for and will frame a patsy named Omar. Sara is horrified but we all know that she eventually agrees to set up Omar.

Years later Sara seems to have everything she wanted, she married Omar's friend and they even have a child, Matias. We learn that appearances can be deceiving, Sara carries with her the guilt of what she and her husband did to Omar, every year on the anniversary of his death Sara visits Omar's grave, she knows that the young man started to die the day he met her. Her marriage to Lucio is also not a happy one, they are dealing with the stress of losing a major investor, they don't know how they will be able to find someone else to invest in the casino. Lucio asks his wife to stay at the casino so they can try and look for other possible investors but Sara begs off saying she has to take the boy, Matias to his riding class. She does in fact take him to his class but then she leaves him, you see the date is February 3rd- the anniversary of Omar's "death"

Sara goes to pay her respects, not that it matters, she might feel guilt and perhaps she was in a bad situation due to her sisters failing health but who made her god? Why did she feel that her sister's life mattered more than Omar's? And let's not forget Omar's poor family, his mother, father, and brother, they all suffered because of her lies. And what about the poor security guard who died so that Sara and Co could get their grubby hands on some cash? Yeah, I still don't feel bad for her.

At the cemetery Sara bumps into her husband, he wonders how long she'll be in love with a ghost and later screams at her and reminds her that *she* is to blame for everything that happened to Omar.

Part Two: Yago

Neither Sara, or her husband suspect that the new guest in their hotel is Omar who has assumed a new identity and now goes by Yago. Yago is back for revenge and his plan is already in the works. He, along with his friend and right hand woman Katia set a plan in motion to destroy those that betrayed him.

The first part of the plan involved stealing Pepe Avile's car, in so doing they made sure that he would not invest or work with Sara and Lucio, but their plan worked in another way as well. Katia, a master of disguise became a paid companion for Mr. Aviles and she was in a room when he told all his friends that Sara and Lucio can not be trusted, this means that no one will invest in their casino.

The second part of the plan was setting up Lucio's friend Abel, you see Able was the one that lost the car and now he is trying to make amends, he is suspicious of Yago and Yago and Katia know this. Once Yago leaves the hotel/casino Abel AKA:"Rat tail" follows him and then breaks into his apartment. Yago and Katia anticipated this and have set a trap, everywhere in the apartment they have left documents and bank account statements that make it look like Yago is loaded. Abel falls for it.

Yago is also trying to win over Abel- he forgives him for breaking into his apartment and explains that he is in Mexico because he got tired of Europe, he wants to invest with new partners and he knows that Abel does not trust him- and that's okay, he understands why Abel would mistrust him, Abel is starting to melt like ice cream on a  hot California day.

While with Yago Abel gets a phone call from Sara, Matias is missing and she needs his help. Yago offers to drive Abel to Sara, when they get to her Yago tries to calm the situation down, he says that maybe Matia's is at a friends house or maybe his grandparents home. Sara tells him they don't have friends (cause the ones you do have you frame for theft and murder!) and there are no grandparents...oh wait.

They drive to Yago's old house and sure enough Matias is there having dinner with Yago's parents and brother. Lucio arrives later and is greeted warmly by Yago's parents: they don't know the role he played in setting up their son. Yago becomes overwhelmed and has to excuse himself, my boyfriends reaction to this "those f*ckers even stole his family!". Yago goes to the bathroom and washes his face, he uses a towel to wipe his face, a towel that his blind mother later uses and which causes her to freak out because it smells like her dead son.

Finally, Abel pulls Lucio aside and tells him that Yago is wealthy and that he could be the investor Lucio and Sara need. Yago's plan is slowly starting to work.

Sorry for the lack of details but it's hard to recap with no laptop at home!

Thanks in advance, Juju! You've got your work cut out for you. I thought Hotel was fast-paced - this one is going even faster. I love it!

It looks like Sara was pimped out by her father, left his house, met Omar & fell in love but betrayed him (along with her dad) to save the life of her little sister Ambar.

Sara & Lucio have a child, or does Sara & OMAR have a child? When did Omar propose? In February? because if that kid has a November birthday he could be Omar's son. How long was Omar locked up? This kid looks around 10 years old.

Omar died on February 3.

Why does Matias know Omar's parents?

Melina smelled Omar on her towels.

Katia (Rocker Bouffant Lady) had a good time blowing that car up.

Gracias Princess! I am looking forward to reading the recap.

I am going to say that I love Flavio in this one already but hate Abel very much. I don't like his way of speaking, his outfit nor the cigarette on his ears(EW!) I would have proffered someone like Marcelo Cordoba to portray him. Abel looks like a gypsy.

We finally get glimpses of Sara's past but I didn't expect neither Juan Carlos Barreto nor our first rape. I wonder if we will be seeing Juan Carlos again since I am wondering who is the actual father of Bruno( The boy). Speaking of which, Bruno is a playboy already!

Sophie Alexander is awesome as always. Katia is a wonderful person and she definitely deserved that sweet lolipop for burning the car alive!

Manuel Ojeda is a nice piece of work. I believe that making him look normal instead of a gangster in a tie was genius. He looks like someone's lost grandpa but deep down has a twisted soul that only Sara knows of.

I feel that Omar's family will grow on me but I don't like it that much yet.

I like the opening though but the music is something to get adjusted to.

Is This woman going to seriously be crying crocodile tears until the truth comes out about what she and her dad and his good friends did to him, until the truth comes out? Every september 3rd she crys. Boohoo crap.

And one thing to add, I don't like the CGI animations much. The slowmotion dizzies me. We had enough of that in Lo Insoportable grr.

Thank you Princess Juju. I'm looking forward to the recap.

Katia DID have a blast blowing up that nice car! I'm enjoying this character a lot. I can't wait until we find out how she got involved in Yago's revenge plan. Her certainly picked a good sidekick, though.

Anon207, I was wondering the same thing, about Matias possibly being Omar's son. I think he could be. About how Matias knows Omar's parents, I think that Lucio must have stayed in contact with the family and visited them regularly and brought Matias along with him.

The family HATES Sara, but they don't seem to know that Lucio and Abel also betrayed Omar and got him locked up.

The ending was great- Melina smelling Omar on that towel. It made me laugh.

Mauricio: when the family finds out about Lucio & Abel betraying Omar too, they're going to go ballistic.

Every time I see Sara, I want to PUNCH HER!

They SHOULD hate Sara, she lied on Omar and got him locked up.

I don't think the rapist is the boy's father because it appears the rape happened before Sara met Omar.

Melina's other senses are heightened and everyone has a unique smell. That's how she knew Omar was in the house. If Jonas doesn't think she's crazy they will put 2 & 2 together and conclude Yago is Omar.

Anon207 nailed it. Omar's parents know that Sara testified against their son but not what role his friends played in the whole thing, maybe they never got to talk to him after he went to jail? Because Omar knew during his train that Sara and Lucio had betrayed him.

Gracias again Princess! Speaking of Sara, I wonder why she did not take poor and sickly Ambar with her. Why did she leave Ambar with the scourge of her Daddy Dearest?

I guess Lucio or Sara took Matias to the parents,my guess is Sara. That's why Matias knows them. They like Lucio so Lucio was forced to take the risk.

Jonas will most likely not buy it and declare Melina as BSC.

Great Princess Juju!! Boy another El Hotel--blink and you miss it TN. But I prefer these to the long, drawn out, painful TN's that lull me to sleep. heck, I even liked the credits.

The ending got me. What that man must have been feeling trying to stay calm while seeing his family after all that time...and they had no clue. But then a mother knows!! Will she keep it quiet?

Last night seemed all about trying to put Sara in a light that would make viewers feel more sympathetic towards her. I still would have liked her to scream back at her father...go get a real job!! But hey, that's not the story. And I also had this sick thought, since daddy dearest didn't seem all that broken up about his dying daughter, was he doing something to make the girl ill to get Sara back in the game?

So weird seeing JB as the suave rapist. When El Hotel came on and Lupe is standing there smiling, I was like IDIOT!! Oh, wrong show. Talk about two diverse roles.

But I'm going to reserve judgement on the parentage of little Rico Suave ( good lord that little guy was ike a miniature Alain Delon!!) until I see how much this story has shades of The Count. of course, in this day and age a simple DNA test could solve the issue, but there may be more drama to it. Didn't seem to me we had that close of events that all three men we saw could be possible fathers. Think it's down to Omar or Lucio.

I love Katia. Takes such joy in her work, doesn't she?

Daisynjay

The kid regards Lucio as his father and we've seen no evidence (yet) that Lucio knows he might not be the father, so why would SARA take her child to Omar's parents when they hate her?

I don't think Lucio would be cool with Sara taking the child to Omar's parents if he knew there was a possibility that the kid could be Omar's as well.

Perfect Princess Juju. You succinctly laid past and present down for us.

"Yeah, I still don't feel bad for her"

I hate when shows try and pull this crap. A dead sister or a dead bf and security guard so you pick the sister and love and a gray area makes it all better. Bull.

Abel, Pablo Valentín, was Gumaro in Antes muerta que Lichita with more pronounced quirky tics and speech and I see some of that here.

We don't know how long Omar was in prison before his faux death or how long he has prepared for this revenge do we? Matias is what 9?

Pretty scummy for Lucio, Abel and Sara to be involved with Omar's family.

I wonder where is Ambar. Was she really ill and if so did she get the treatment?

Anon207- I agree with you, Omar's parents can not stand Sara but they seem very fond of Lucio and Abel so I'm sure Matias has contact with them because of Lucio-not Sara, I also think there's a good chance he is Omar's son and that Lucio is clueless about it. He does not strike me as the kind of man that would embrace a child that was not his.

Fabulous job, Juju! I like how you broke the story out between Sara's flashbacks and the present-day.

Love the interaction between Yago and Katia, and seeing how they played everyone this episode. Katia really had a blast stealing that car and torching it.

I'm guessing Matias is 10+ and could be Yago/Omar's (Yomar?) kid. It was clear Omar's parents can't stand Sara. Not surprising. But they obviously have big hearts if they have managed to grudgingly accept her since she's married to Lucio. I don't know how Yomar was able to stand seeing his parents being so nice to the people he knows took his life from him. I think I would have run out of the house. Too many memories. Too close to the people he loves.

I don't think seeing why Sara set Omar us was to make us feel sorry for her. It just showed us why she did it. The story is richer if she isn't just some evil beyotch setting people up for nothing but greed and kicks. But a bad childhood, a terrible father, and a sick sister are no excuse for grand theft, fraud, perjury, and murder (both the security guard and Omar). No amount of guilt and tears can make up for that.

Great recao, Princess Juju...what do you mean no detail...you provided plenty of detail. Perfect as far as I'm concerned.

I agree with Vivi's assessment, the detail on Sara is not to make us excuse her but to see the reasons behind her actions... the pressure she was under. Particularly the need to provide care for her sister (wondering if the disease is real or just a setup by evil Dad. Thought he might have given the little girl something to make her feel ill in order to tip Sara over the edge the name of the disease sounded really bogus).

Anyway, like everyone else, just loving Yago's crazy ass sidekick...the hair, the flair, the whole shebang.

Oh, and forgot to add...LOVED the title. Song will be going through my mind the rest of the day, but that's fine. Always love musical tie-ins.

Thank you Princess Juju for today, and also thanks to Nandicta for yesterday's recap. I'm backed up with work-related issues and won't be able to start watching until next Tuesday. I'm not a fan of Ivan Sanchez but love the 9:00 pm time slot!

My favorite line, "Yeah, I still don't feel bad for her."

Who is the actress playing Katia? I feel like I somehow need to see that car blow-up scene.

I love seeing the regular patio peeps here and love reading all of your comments!

Hi Everyone! I'm back for Yago and Tres Veces Ana! I've missed you guys!

Thank you, Princess Juju, for a wonderful recap! The perfect amount of detail.

1. I can't believe how much the actor playing Omar looks like Yago! I always hate it when they change a characters hair and contacts and we're supposed to believe no one would recognize them. But these two actors are such ringers I can totally buy the post-op Yago being Omar (I kind of miss Omar though he was so sweet!)

2. Am I the only one who thinks Katia looks like Celine Dion?!

So good to be back on the patio! Thanks again Princess Juju!

Katy

Welcome back Katy! And a big thanks to everyone that's commented. Miss Judy, I've never heard the original song, I was actually quoting the Jay-Z version, lol

Gracias for the fantastic recap JuJu

I don't know why Yago/Omar's parents would be so welcoming to Sara, they must know she lied at the trial???????

Dear sweet Lupe from Hotel was the man in the hotel that gave Sara his rm card & was robbed. I hope we haven't seen the end of him, he is not so sweet in Yago.
He is Juan Carlos Barreto.

LoriLoo- The Katia actress is Sophie Alexander, whom many of us here know from Yo No Creo en los Hombres and Para Volver a Amar. She played disagreeable characters in both tns, but she was fabulous in both.

I've also seen her in the movie Labios Rojos, where she plays Silvia Navarro's BFF, and in Azteca's telenovela Montecristo, also based on the Count of Montecristo, where she again played Silvia Navarro's (the heroine's) BFF.

Variopinta- Wasn't it jarring seeing Juan Carlos Barreto playing that brutal rapist at 9pm, and then playing sweet Lupe at 10pm in Hotel? He's also a great actor, who jumps from playing hero to villain really well. I still can dredge up real loathing for him when I think of his character in Para Volver a Amar.

I'm thinking Yomar's parents are welcoming to Sara ONLY because she's married to Lucio and ONLY because of the child.

Otherwise they would pay her dust.

I forgot his character's name on the show but Juan Carlos Barreto was the lawyer/henchman of Ursula & Daniel (who are now Melina & Lucio on this show).

Anon207- He was Arango (no first name). Lots of actors from both Yo No and Para Volver a Amar in this tn. I suspect the three shows share writers and/or producers.

Thank you Vivi. Wasn't she a little BSC in Yo No Creo?

Variopinta- they are NOT welcoming at all of Sara, last night they made it very clear that they put up with her only because of Matias and Lucio. Yago's parents KNOW she lied, they however are in the dark about Lucio's and Abels role in what happened to their dear Omar, which was why my boyfriend was fuming, they sent poor Omar to jail and still have the balls to visit his parents? Nah, man.

LoriLoo- Oh, yeah. She was a LOT BSC in Yo No. :)

Gracias, Princess Juju.

Nothing new to add since I'm late to the party today but this was a great episode. I also think that Matias is Yago's son and I'm really liking Sofie Alexander Katz in this role.

LoriLoo, she was mucho BSC in YNCELH. I covered her Karmageddon and it was intense.

Princess Juju,

Thanks for this excellent recap. You've done a great job with an episode that while watching I thought would be rather difficult to recap. Thanks.

I'm inclined to think that Matias may well be Omar's son. I a bit confused as to why Sara allows him to be part of Omar's parents lives. Another confusing thing for me is how Omar was able to survive the prison attack, get such quality facial reconstruction, and end up super wealthy. I hope that these things are better explained as we go along. It also seems strange that the good guys appear to be starting off with the upper hand and always a step ahead of the bad guys.

So far I think that the casting and acting has been stellar. Things are really popping along at a breathtaking pace. So far my favorite character is Katia. She is quite the pistol. I'm also already fond of the over the top character, Abel. Menacing pliers... excellent!

Carlos

Thank you Vivi and UA for a more detailed description of the BSC-ness of Sophie in Yo No Creo!

Carlos - glad to see that you are drinking again. :)

Carlos, I think Sara allows Matias around Omar's family because she knows they are his grandparents, and they in turn put up with her because she's married to Lucio. I'm also not sure that Yago is super wealthy, from his discussion with Katia last night it seems like they fabricated a lot of the statements that Abel found and they made up a project in Panama for him to see so that Sara and Lucio get the impression that he is loaded.

Carlos, in every version of The Count of Monte Cristo the Edmond Dantes character acquires a mentor who is a gangster or has a hidden fortune that he tells him how to find. When he gets out of prison and sets up his revenge he has a financial advantage.

I think Manuel Ojeda played that role in 1999's Amor Gitano which had Mauricio Islas as the protagonist. Otto Sirgo was the protagonist of 2000's Por un Beso but I couldn't identify the actor who played "el padrino."

If he is not wealthy why fly in by helicopter? I also hope Omar's change in fortune is better explained. If Matias is Omar's, either Lucio knows the child isn't his or Sara slept with him during the trial and married shortly after.

Thank you, Princess Juju! Excellent recap!

I agree with Vivi and JudyB, I believe Sara's background and the account of the events leading to her betrayal are there for informational purposes. Still, I don't care what she has been through. Sorry, I am not sorry! What she did to Omar and his family (as well as that cop who was murdered during the heist) is simply unforgivable!

Just a couple of extra details to add, if I may:

1) Among the documents left on Yago's desk for Abel to "discover": photos of Yago's casinos in Biarritz, France as well as in Bilbao and San Sebatián, Spain. There are also papers for a complex Yago owns and for a shipyard he is supposedly building in Panama. Of all these properties, Katia the word "supposedly" only when she was talking about the shipyard. Maybe Yago is a rich casino owner after all! (Thanks to the help from his Godfather, that we are yet to see).

2) Ámbar's illness is a genetic disease called "Brugada syndrome". I've never heard of it but here is the Wikipedia page for more info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brugada_syndrome

Thanks again, Juju! Catch you guys tomorrow to discuss Episode 3! Good night :)

Katia *used the word "supposedly" only when she was talking about the shipyard.

I bet Ambar was not even sick, Damien is the worst papa, & lied to Sara.

Carlos, more tequila drinks, por favor.

-- Variopinta: I guess we'll find out soon enough whether Father of The Year was telling the truth about the illness or not. Either way, as Juju in the recap, Sara had no right to play God. Just like her little sister's life is precious to her, Omar's life was precious to the people who love him. Sara had no right to sacrifice him for an operation/treatment that may or may not works.

-- Carlos: Are those mojitos in your avatar? Niiice!

Sorry for the typos. My brain is too sleepy to spell. Night! :)

Princess J, loved your recap, especially the way you divided it into two parts, Sara’s story....then everything else, very helpful! Thanks!

In this NOVELA, who could Matias’ father be? Lucio= bad guy Omar= good guy. I’m wagering my casino chips on Omar!

JudyB, “the detail on Sara is not to make us excuse her but to see the reasons behind her actions... the pressure she was under.” The actress playing Sara is the correct age for the adult, casino owner. She wasn’t as believable as the abused, frightened teen-ager, under the thumb of her grifter father. There is a lot of maturity and growth between 18 (ish) and 28 (ish). Interested in how this storyline unfolds. It was very upsetting to see Sara lying on the stand, they’ll have to work hard to rehabilitate her, if they can!

I had the same thought about Ambar. I'll beat Daddy Direst drugged the poor child and used Sara's conscience against her. I hope we find out soon.

I'm a day behind but wanted to say a big thank you for h stellar recap!!

I too think Mat is Omar's son.

Absolutely love Katia!

Yago is an excellent card player so after 10 years I can see him being wealthy even if he doesn't own casinos.

Someone must have rescued him during the prison break. But who? And are they related to Katia?

I don't feel bad for Sara. Maybe bec the injustice to Omar was so great and she looks to be living well.

As for Brugada syndrome, I don't recall having ever heard of it much less diagnosed it, but I did a bit of research on it. Nandicta is correct, it is a genetically inherited disease and Ambar's dad is also correct, it is a defect in the electrical conduction system in the heart and it can be deadly with the cause of death being ventricular fibrillation. It was an unusual and unlikely choice for Ambar. It is not commonly diagnosed in children (especially poor children). It is much less common in females. It usually does not manifest its presence until later in life, more commonly the early 40s. It is not correctable by surgery per se. The most reliable treatment is an implantable defibrillator (of course this would entail a surgical procedure albeit relatively minor surgery as heart surgery goes and would cost nowhere near 100 thousand dollars). Now of course this is a TN so anything is possible, but my money is on Ambar not having Brugada syndrome.

Variopinta and Nandicta,

Those are Mint Juleps which I'll be enjoying this Sat as we watch the 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby. The proper making of these is almost a religious ritual although the ingredients are easily obtained: Bourbon Whiskey, sugar, mint (preferably originating in Kentucky), and ice (perfectly smashed in a canvas bag). They're ideally served in a silver cup. Sippin' them is pretty much a religious experience.

Carlos

Princess Juju, thanks up a bunch!

Right Carlos, 1st Sat in May. I like a gray horse & I have four to choose from this time.

Princess juju, this is a very good detailed recap. You done good not to have a laptop. Very heartbreaking scene with omar/yago watching his family being friends with those parasites. The little boy is Innocent but his parents are parasites. He(the kid) don't Know how dispicable his parents are. They're worse than groo. He was cold, they're dead inside. she can go to the cemetery every febuary 3rd and cry and leave flowers and be nice to his parents, she gets no warm and fuzzy feelings from me.

I can see omar/yago reaching out to his brother or father somewhere down the line, maybe 30th or so episode, but not moma. Not yet anyways. But you know what, this lady has had to endure blindness, she can probably take knowing her Babyboy is still alive. But we'll have to wait and see. I really want to see those flys get stuck in their Own web of spined crap.

Thanks again princess.

In the count of monty christo, (which this was Loosely based on)wasn't the child she had the counts kids? They fid havr sex that nite before the big scam. Maybe she married loucio do The kid would be legitimate. From one scam to the next. Just guessin, he ciuld be lou & sara's kid. Hod help that kid.

The Count of Monte Cristo which this was Loosely based on, wasn't the child she had the counts kid? they did have sex that night before the big scam, maybe she married louy so the kid would be legitimate. From one scam to the next. Just guessin. He could be louy and Sara's kid. God help that kid. this is what it was supposed to say without all those typos. I read It over and then I forgot that last paragraph and started thankin you for the recap which I still thank you for the recap. Anyhoo here it is with no typos.

Princess Juju - Thank you for the recap! I hope to watch this episode tomorrow when I've got some time. Just tonight, I watched the first episode and it was really good. The flashbacks are a bit confusing, since we aren't given dates on the screen ( or even an años anteriormente), so I would be lost without these recaps.

Princess Juju- Thank you so much! What a great recap! You got it all.

Don't have more to add, I'll just say: that I'm really enjoying "Yago" so far.
