If I hear “Happy Mother’s Day” one more time, so help me, I will unleash the Cyclops on you! |
At a glance
-- In case you didn’t notice, it’s Mother’s Day in Sueñolandia.
A closer look
Ernesto informs an inebriated Kracy that Ricardo is in jail for assaulting him. This incident would be helpful in the custody battle.
At Casa Manzanares, Félix is meditating to connect with his inner self. Margarita thinks he should connect with her inner self instead. She crashes on top of him like a pile of rubble. Nookie time!
The next morning, the Guerrero kids surprise their Mamá with gifts in bed and wish her a Happy Mother’s Day. “Las Mañanitas” is playing. In addition to a beautiful bouquet of red roses, Pato and Pedro give Esperanza a framed photo of the three of them, taken ten years ago on Mother’s Day. They reminisce about all the fun they had that day. Esperanza tells them that they may have been mischievous (traviesos) at times but they are wonderful children and the greatest blessing that life bestowed upon her. Pato says that she and her brother are very proud of their Esperanza/hope, of their Guerrero/warrior mom. Pedro has every faith that they will spend many many Mother’s Days together in the future. ¡Abrazo Guerrero!
At Casa Manzanares, Margarita discovers a generously adorned breakfast table and a big basket of daisies, the flowers she was named after. Her granddaughters jump from behind the table and nearly give her a heart attack: “Surpriiiiise!” They thank their grandma for being the funnest, most loving, most supportive and most entertaining abuela. She gives them la bendición and prays that the Holy Cross protect them from all dangers, including a sudden and violent death. Yep, it was a slightly awkward bendición. The girls give their abuela a miniature replica of her motorcycle. She loves it!
At the Ministerio Público/Public Prosecutor’s Office, Detective Rentería informs Ricardo that the assault charges against him have been dropped, because Ernesto claims he and Ricardo are friends. However, Ricardo must answer charges for resisting arrest and for disrespecting the authorities.
At Ernesto’s pad, Kracy has a mighty hangover. Ernesto gives her the file containing all the info she needs regarding the assault he suffered at the hands of her ex-husband. Kracy is grateful for Ernesto’s help and doesn’t know how to repay him. “With your loyalty and your silence”, he replies. He sarcastically wishes her a Happy Mother’s Day.
At the Ministerio Público, Ricardo is free to go but he is still giving Detective Rentería attitude. He phones Iker: How are the kids? Still asleep. Instead of a thank you, Iker receives further instructions from his ex-boss: The kids’ school uniforms are still in my house, look for them, get Selena and Rodrigo dressed, I’ll pick them up later. Iker must be thinking to himself: What am I, your governess? Ricardo needs to go to work at Instituto Palacios. The last thing he needs now is to lose his job.
Ernesto calls Esperanza to let her know that he dropped the charges (otorgar el perdón) against Ricardo as promised. He also wishes her a Happy Mother’s Day. She informs him that she’ll be working in the morning and going to her doctor’s appointment in the afternoon. He offers to accompany her but she declines. He offers to send her a driver but she declines. After hanging up, she tells her kids that her priority now is to secure their future financially.
Kiko is released from the hospital. The road to recovery is long so the doctor instructs him to take it easy. On their way home, the Gallos bump into Sansón, the dandy loan shark, who reminds Erasmo that he has 3 weeks to repay him the borrowed money + interests. Erasmo tells him he’ll get it all as agreed, just stop scaring his little siblings. I would really like to know how the construction worker who can’t afford milk and tomatoes is going to come up with 15,000 bucks in 3 weeks. He must’ve encountered an alchemy recipe for turning cement into gold. Sansón thinks Erasmo’s little sister is a hottie (está hecha un bombón) and he’s prepared to cancel the debt if he gets to tap that. Erasmo is offended and tries to play macho but all he achieves is getting himself punched in the kidneys. I don’t feel sorry for him one bit. What an absolute and utter numpty! He puts himself and the siblings who depend on him in danger, just to ease his conscience about Kiko’s accident, which he believes he provoked. Erasmo deserves to be slapped around daily. Para que se le quite lo menso. To help him lose his dumba$$ery.
At Instituto Palacios, Gonzalo Santillana, the Pimp-in-Chief struts around the halls with a ceremonial cane in hand and with two gorillas shadowing him. He confiscates Félix’s hoverboard, greets Esperanza and heads to the principal’s office to see his wife. He asks why she hasn’t located Cristina. Bárbara swears she tried everything but she can’t get ahold of Cristina. She even waited outside her house for a whole hour but Cristina wouldn’t open. Qué the hell? Is Cristina Whatchmacallit the founding mother of pedagogy? Did she conceptualize the modern theories of education?
Cristina is in her house looking at pictures of her kid and looking sad. For fudge sake, we’ve seen this 32 times already! Cristina looks at a note saying: “Your daughter is dead” and a newspaper clipping saying that a 5-year-old girl, called Abril Sousa Vélez, has drowned. Cristina says out loud: “You can’t be dead, my darling!” or something to this effect. I’m bored with this nonsense already. Osorio hired the bootylicious blonde, with a fresh tabloid scandal, in order to raise the ratings, but he doesn’t know what to do with her yet. How about giving her a few lines every now and then?
At Viviana’s penthouse, Luca brings his mother flowers and wishes her a Happy Mother’s Day. There is also another bouquet on the table. It’s from Mario. He too wishes her a Happy Mother’s Day. His note also says that he admires her and can’t stop thinking about her. He asks her out for a cup of coffee. Luca tells his mom she deserves to be happy.
At the constructora, Mario tries his butch voice and macho turkey walk on the secretaries. Begoña and Arleth are quite puzzled but ultimately unimpressed.
At Instituto Palacios, Esperanza greets her students as they enter the classroom. Salma wants to know what happened on Saturday: Why did she stand up her groom? Esperanza doesn't answer. Ricardo arrives. He is so depressed he grew three-day stubble practically overnight. He asks whether what Ernesto told him was true. Esperanza evades his question and gives him back his engagement ring. He doesn't want to take it because it’s hers. She puts the ring in his hand and tells him she has a class to teach. He demands to know the truth. She wants him to stay away from her. She closes the classroom door practically in his face. He looks at the ring and puts his droopy sadface on. She sheds one single tear in slow motion. Her meddlesome pupils, Salma and Virgilio, take turns asking questions about the cancelled wedding. She tells them to sit their nosy a$$es down and stop being a nuisance.
In the hallway, outside Esperanza’s classroom, Félix makes one of his smart-alecky remarks: “Didn't you hear the bell (timbre), Maestro Alegría?” Ricardo tells him to stuff it. He’s not in the mood for his baloney today.
Sweet blessed Virgen de la Paz! The Santillanas are still talking about locating the only person with a PhD in Pedagogy in the whole western hemisphere! Have you tried hiring mercenaries to kidnap her? Honestly, can we just move past this crapola already? The dialogue is so lame, the comedy is so cringeworthy, Osorio should’ve invested the money spent on all these additional actors on a new set of writers who are not barely literate 11 year olds. Just saying.
At Casa Gallo, Estrella is reproaching Erasmo for his stoopidity. Why didn’t he just ask Luca for help? Because he already owes him money; besides, Luca doesn’t walk around with brutal goons in tow and Erasmo is itching for a regular beating. The Gallos decide to sell their smartphones and the recently-operated wheelchair-bound teenage boy volunteers for child labor. This is their solution. This and praying to their dead mother and a picture of the Virgin. More Mother’s Day talk and a 5-minute praying scene ensue. I can’t even! My brain cells are shriveling up from the sheer inaneness of it all!
More Mother’s Day gabbing between Viviana and Adrián. He says this imperfect son loves you. She say this imperfect mother loves you. I say this imperfect viewer has had it with all the bulldung filler scenes. After Adrián hangs up, Dr. Mireya suggests they do a dramatization of his problems because she knows he likes acting and because talking things out is for suckers. Osorio feels the old school therapy methods are not exciting enough. That’s why he’s giving us yet another useless over-the-top scene of yelling, grimacing and crying in slo-mo to dramatic music, in order to fill the rest of this eventless episode.
Ernesto and Luca talk about Esperanza’s condition. Ernesto wants the best medical care for the woman of his life. He wants to take her to the one place where all TN medical emergencies and hopeless health crises head, in search of miraculous recoveries: Houston, Texas. Ernesto wants to enlist the services of the best oncologist in the world, who must be in Houston, Texas, too, obviously. Luca tells him not to insist too much. It’s lucky enough that Esperanza lets Ernesto back in her life.
At Instituto Palacios, in Ricardo’s classroom, Pamela noticed that her favorite singing/joking teacher is sad. She gives him a lollipop to brighten his day and tells him to cheer up. Do not to lose your Alegría/joy. Selena says Pamela is right. On his way out of the classroom, Ricardo bumps into Gonzalo Santillana and introduces himself. Gonzalo says Ricardo’s last name doesn't match up to his aspect (semblante). Oh bite me, Pimpy!
Esperanza tells Bárbara she can no longer direct the musical they are organizing in conjunction with the Musturd School. I personally think they should just cancel it. The male lead is in rehab, the female lead is pregnant, the villana caught the eye of a violent thug and the director has stage 4 cancer. Maybe the Gods of Amateur Musical Theater are trying to tell them something.
In jail, Silvana is celebrating Mother’s Day by swearing revenge on her own kids. After an entire episode of Mother’s Day schmaltz stuffed down my throat, I’m as cheerful as Principal Crazy-Eyes! Yeah, screw Mother’s Day! Make this episode end already!
At the constructora, Anastasia wishes Kracy a Happy Mother’s Day. Kracy fills her in on what went down at the courthouse. The judge decided that, given the documented instance of violence, Ricardo is too dangerous to be allowed around his children. The authorities will intervene to retrieve Selena and Rodrigo from their father’s place of residence.
At Instituto Palacios, Ricardo intercepts Pato in the hallway. He wants to know what’s going on. No way would Esperanza stop loving him overnight. Pato gives him the official party line. He doesn’t buy it. He knows something's up. Pedro comes to the rescue and tells Ricardo to give up the chase (resignarse), already. It’s over. Esperanza doesn’t love him.
At the hospital, the oncologist tells Esperanza, Pato and Pedro that they need to fill out a request form (solicitud) for the operation and submit it to the hospital’s administration. The admin will notify them when there is an appointment available for Esperanza's procedure to be performed.
Mario and Viviana meet at the constructora. He tries his Macho Macho Man routine on her. She laughs in his face.
Kracy brings the po-po to Ricardo’s home to retrieve the minors because their father is deemed too violent to be left alone with them. Ricardo goes berserk and turns physically menacing in front of the process server and the police. That’s his way of disproving Kracy’s accusations. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer, I tell ya.
While the oncologist goes out to get the forms, the Guerrero kids tell their mother what happened with Ricardo at school. They feel bad about lying to him because they like him. Esperanza explains the reasons for ditching Ricardo and making him think she’s planning to shack up with Ernesto. If Ricardo were to find out about her illness, he wouldn’t want to leave her side (despegarse). Esperanza can't allow that. Besides, Ricardo has enough problems as it is.
Goodbye scene at the Alegría house. The kids are sobbing. Ricardo is devastated. Kracy is a b*tch. After everyone leaves, Ricardo takes it out on some innocent furniture. He breaks ornaments, flips a couple of tables, destroys a bookcase and kicks a cardboard box. Slo-mo sadness and dramatic music. It’s been a rough day for the beefcake.
