Yago #5. Friday May 6, 2016. Everybody Has An Achilles Heel.

For no reason at all. You're welcome.
At a glance

-- Fidel Yampolski takes Omar under his wing and helps him become Yago.
-- Abel plies Katia, a recovering alcoholic, with vodka in order to get more information about Yago.
-- Sara is jealous of Ámbar and Yago’s nascent romance.
-- Lucio tries to secure the initial investment that Yago requested through a loan shark. He also learns that Bruno is investigating Omar’s case.
-- Ámbar has a health emergency and is evacuated by helicopter to Mexico City.

A closer look

Punta Azul. Yago requests that Lucio invest 40 million US dollars in their joint venture or they have no deal.

Flashback. San Nicolás Prison, a few years ago. Omar gets a beat down from some inmates who want to know where he hid the casino’s stolen money. Omar is saved by big shot mob boss, Fidel Yampolski, whose integration to the prison population is the biggest event in the jail’s social calendar that year.

Present time, Punta Azul. Lucio agrees to Yago’s condition. He’ll let him know when the money is ready. They part ways and Yago informs Katia that his prey fell hook, line and sinker. Yago walks that slo-mo swaggery walk he does in the end credits: “Somebody once told me that revenge is a dish best served cold. Lucio betrayed Omar and deprived him of everything: his family, his freedom, [his] love, his life dreams... And this is exactly what I plan on doing to Lucio.”

In the hotel room of the Sarquis couple, Lucio brings Sara up to date while packing his suitcase. He needs to go back to Mexico City to secure the substantial initial investment that Yago requires in order to do business with them. Sara doesn’t understand why Lucio agreed to invest money they don’t have. He didn’t want Yago to think he was poor, that’s why. He suggests they mortgage their casino (hipotecar). He is sure that with the revenue (ingresos) of their business venture with Yago, they can repay their debts in no time. Sara disagrees. She doesn’t want to lose what they worked so hard to build. Framing people up for robbery and murder isn’t an easily duplicable feat, que digamos. Lucio tells his wife that he loves her precisely because she is a risk-taker. He cajoles her into accepting his idea. Or so he thinks.

Mexico City. Alejandra and Bruno are having hot chocolate at Casa Guerrero. They dodge questions when Jonás and Melina wonder what they are working on for their latest school assignment. When Alejandra leaves the dining room, Bruno insists to his parents that she is just a classmate, nothing more. He only has eyes for journalism, that’s it. Melina thinks he shouldn’t let this good girl get away, especially since he seems to like her so much.

Punta Azul. Abel tells Lucio that he doesn’t trust Yago and wants to keep a close eye on him. Lucio teases his lovelorn friend: “Is it really that or do you want to see Ámbar in a bikini?”. He instructs Abel to watch Sara while he’s away in Mexico City.

Yago bumps into Ámbar accidentally on purpose. She is heading to the beach to take photos and she invites Yago to be a come-with guy. He takes a rain check but suggests they spend the afternoon together in his yacht.

Flashback. San Nicolás Prison, a few years ago. Omar finds out that Fidel Yampolski is a powerful mafioso. He is the king of the casinos and the king of jail. He practically runs the place. He also has many powerful connections amongst politicians, businessmen, etc.

Present time, Punta Azul. Ámbar is excited about her date with Yago. Sara looks jealous. Ámbar asks her if she ever felt this way, like a giddy teenager, about Lucio when they first started dating. Sara flashbacks to Omar but doesn't answer.

Flashback. San Nicolás Prison, a few years ago. Prisoners gather in Fidel’s cell to watch an impromptu chess tournament where he is slaying every opponent. Omar offers to play the next round. Fidel asks about his story. Omar tells him that he was wrongly accused of murder and the robbery of “Casino Paraíso”. Fidel is familiar with that casino, he used to own it.

Present time, Mexico City. Lucio is talking with Efraín, his administrator, who advises against making this gamble with Yago. Besides, Sara will never agree to selling her actions to raise capital. Lucio has two options in face of the substantial debts he has already accumulated: either abandon this Yago venture or get a loan from a private individual, which is surely a euphemism for a loan shark. Lucio agrees to the second option. Pfff! First, he gambles his casino in a game of cards and now this! How this guy ever managed to hang on to his portion of the casino loot long enough to invest it and make it fructify, I will never know!

Flashback. San Nicolás Prison, a few years ago. Omar tells Fidel he is innocent. Fidel knows.

Present time, Mexico City. Alejandra informs Bruno that she managed to locate Adalberto Gutiérrez. He is a born-again Christian who goes by the name Ezequiel now; that’s why they couldn't find him earlier. Apparently, Alejandra and Bruno are in an open relationship. They are free to see other people, though it seems that Bruno is the one who doesn’t want to commit. Perhaps Omar’s tragic story made his little brother foreswear love forever?

Punta Azul. Sara is checking with her husband over the phone. Did he secure the money? Yup, and he is now home doing a puzzle (rompecabezas) with their son, Matías. Sara is getting ready to do her part too: Use her charms to close the deal with Yago.

Ámbar is heading to her meeting with Yago but she feels a tad uncomfortable in her new dress. Abel reassures her: “You look good enough to eat (estás hecha un bombón)!” He wants to accompany her and Sara to guarantee their security but she tells him they are covered: Yago is going to be there too. Abel wonders what that gachupín (pejorative term for Spaniard) has that “other people” don’t. Or is it that a fat chequebook (chequera) beats every other attribute? Ámbar insists she never cared about money. She kisses Abel goodbye and tells him not to ruin this beautiful friendship they have.

Mexico City. Jonás informs his wife that his regular client gave him an advance for yet another job. He tells her that he will leave her some money (feria) in the usual place: A jar (bote) inside one of the kitchen cupboards. As soon as her husband leaves, Melina takes the money.

Punta Azul. Sara lies to Ámbar and tells her that Yago called to cancel his date with her. Something held him up (algo se le atravesó) and he won’t be able to make it. Ámbar is disappointed, she thinks it was too good to be true but suggests she and Sara go out since they are dressed up to the nines. Sara declines, she has a business meeting. If Sara was planning on pulling this stunt anyway to meet Yago by herself, why did she take her sister shopping for a new dress for her date? Yep, Sara needs to get plastered by a falling piano. She lies to Yago too and pretends that Sara canceled on him but he lets her know that he is onto her lie. Sara shrugs it off. She assures Yago it’s in his best interest that she came alone to this date.

Flashback. San Nicolás Prison, a few years ago. Oh hell no she didn’t! Sara visits Omar in jail a few months after she premeditatedly put him there and asks for forgiveness. She squeezes out a few crocodile tears and expresses insincere regret. Omar wonders what he should be forgiving her for, exactly. For lying to him? For falsely accusing him of armed robbery? For marrying Lucio? She starts spinning out lies again and he begs her to stop. No more lies! Because he might just believe her again! If she ever loved him one day, she should please just go! This boy is way too kind and civilized, if you ask me. It must have taken superhuman restraint not to lunge at Sara and strangle her to death. Omar takes off. Sara calls out after him and boo-hoos some more. Better go jump off a cliff, you heartless heifer!

Present time, Punta Azul. Abel is casually chatting with a barman and trying to squeeze more information about Yago, to no avail. The barman does however inform him that Yago is inseparable from a young woman called Katia. As if invoked, Katia appears to be lurking nearby. She assures Yago, over the phone, that she has her eyes on Abel.

Mexico City. Alejandra and Bruno find Adalberto, now Ezequiel, Gutiérrez. He is the cop who dunked Omar into that oil barrel filled with water. He tries to evade their questions about Omar at first, then admits that the poor kid maintained his innocence throughout the investigation and torture process. Omar insisted that the police watch the security tapes from that night but the tapes had disappeared.

Punta Azul. Sara wants to renegotiate the figure that Yago asked her husband to invest. Yago runs his hand through his hair and says that the renegotiation depends on what Sara is willing to offer. She tells him that it’s crazy how much he reminds her of someone. She closes her eyes and offers her lips. He leans in closer for a kiss but pulls back at the last moment. The investment amount is not negotiable!

Flashback. San Nicolás Prison, a few years ago. Fidel has taken Omar under his wing. He has been teaching him many things, including how to play cards. Fidel also gets him to admit out loud that Sara played him from the start. She feigned to love him only because he was the ideal fall guy for the robbery she planned.

Present time, Punta Azul. The barman points Katia out to Abel just as she enters and sits down next to him. He offers to buy her a drink but she declines. She doesn’t drink. She orders a glass of water and flashbacks to her alcoholic days, before sobriety and hair mousse changed her life. Abel orders a vodka and tonic and Katia informs him that this is one of her favorite tipples. Or at least it used to be. He maliciously switches the glasses and bets her that she will pick the vodka, every time and with her eyes closed. The glass she chooses turns out be the vodka, indeed. She takes a sip and tells Abel to order his own vodka and tonic.

The little yacht excursion is over. Yago apologizes for letting himself get carried away. Sara is a married woman and he is interested in Ámbar.

Mexico City. Melina goes to see a ghost whisperer. He tells her that Omar is still alive. The lady from Melina’s support group is the one setting up this swindle to take Melina’s money.

Lucio meets with the loan shark and assures him that once the business is up and running, it will generate plenty of money to cover the higher interests. The loan shark likes the sound of that, he doesn’t get along well with defaulters (morosos). He promises to let Lucio know as soon as his loan “application” is approved.

Punta Azul. Abel manages to get Katia drunk but she doesn’t reveal anything about Yago or the nature of her work with him. She accepts his suggestion to move the party to her suite, but once she sees the black cloak that she used to rob Avilés’s Ferrari, she sobers up long enough to kick Abel out.

Sara finds Ámbar by the pool. How did the business meeting go? Not very well. Sara says she is sorry that Yago stood Ámbar up. Ámbar doesn't care, she knows he’ll make it up to her later. Sara warns her sister to take things slow with Yago. Ámbar senses that her sister likes Yago more than she is willing to admit. Sara pretends she is just worried about Ámbar, that’s all. Ámbar tells her to mind her own business.

Yago finds tipsy Katia in her suite. He flips out when he learns that she was drinking with Abel earlier. Did she reveal anything? She swears she didn’t. She apologizes. Yago comforts her but he is now aware that Abel discovered Katia’s Achilles heel.

Flashback. San Nicolás Prison, a few years ago. Omar is turning into a bada$$. He can defend himself physically thanks to Fidel’s tutoring and he knows what he has to do to get his revenge once he leaves prison. However, Fidel tells him he still has many more things to learn

Present time, Mexico City. Jonás asks Melina about the money he left in the kitchen cupboard. She pretends she used it for an emergency, to fix their broken fridge. Lucio and Matías pop in for a visit and are greeted warmly by the elderly couple.

Flashback. San Nicolás Prison, a few years ago. A mutiny turns the prison into a blazing inferno. One of Omar’s enemies beats him up with a pipe and, in retaliation, Fidel sets the guy on fire. He tells a passed out Omar: “From now on, you are dead to everyone!” Fidel instructs his minions to put Omar’s necklace on the burned corpse.

Present time, Punta Azul. At the beach, Yago apologizes to Ámbar for not being able to meet with her earlier. He asks her whether she is close to her sister. She is, indeed. Sara has been Ámbar’s surrogate mom ever since the two sisters lost their mother at a very young age. Ámbar wants to know why a gorgeous millionaire like Yago is still single. He admits that he was about to get hitched once. He was madly, stupidly, in love with a woman who didn’t love him back and things ended very badly. However, now that he sees Ámbar, he realizes that this heartache is now part of his past. The two share a sweet kiss, while Abel fumes from a distance. The kiss took Ámbar’s breath away. Literally. She gets dizzy and faints.

Mexico City. Bruno pulls Lucio aside and tells him about his investigation. He discovered that his brother Omar never admitted to the charges brought against him. Besides, the CCTV tapes from the night of the robbery mysteriously disappeared. Bruno is convinced that Omar was framed and he is going to prove it!

Punta Azul. Ámbar is being transferred by helicopter to a hospital in Mexico City, with Sara and Yago riding along. Abel is worried sick but he is not allowed to accompany his beloved pumpkin. He makes Yago swear that he’ll ensure nothing bad happens to Ámbar. During the helicopter ride, Sara starts crying and thanks Yago. He reaches over and holds her hand. He thinks to himself: “Omar died that day in jail to enable Yago to live. But Omar was dead way before that. His love for Sara killed him.” He flashbacks to the operation that reinvented him. “Yago will not allow the same thing to happen to him because he learnt how to play his cards right. Omar died but that love [for Sara] is still alive.”

A quote from the capítulo

“La mejor estrategia para ganar un juego de ajedrez es anticipar el final. ¡Jaque mate!”

*Fidel teaches Omar about chess and life: “The best strategy to win a game of chess is to anticipate the end. Checkmate!”

Morning Patio Pals! I hope you enjoy the recap and the discussion. I'm afraid I won't be around much this weekend (double recap duty today + house guests) but I'll catch up with you Sunday night or Monday morning! Have a great weekend! :)

Ah another fabulous recap from the gal who never sleeps and always, always delivers.

Favorite line:
[Katia]...before sobriety and hair mousse changed her life.

Perfect.

I also love the vocabulary and key quotes. The use of "feria" that way is new for me, "morosos" as well.

Title excellent. Final quote..words of wisdom indeed

“La mejor estrategia para ganar un juego de ajedrez es anticipar el final. ¡Jaque mate!”*

At my age, "anticipating the end" is not such an attractive option! but nevertheless love the cagey quip.

You put so much of yourself into these recaps Nandicta. Thank you.

Nandicta- Take a well deserved bow, and a well deserved REST this weekend, after all the recaps you did on the blog this week. Have fun with your friend!

That was such a b*tch move, buying a new dress for Ambar for her date with Yago, then lying to her that he cancelled. I'm glad Ambar called her on being attracted to Yago and jealous, even without knowing the dirty trick Sara played.

I wonder how Ambar being sick will change how Yago proceeds with his plan?

Not happy that Abel now knows Katia's weakness. Or that Lucio now knows about Bruno's investigation.

When everyone finds out Melina went to see a (fake) medium, that will really make them think she's lost it.

My word Nandicta! I am continually in awe of these recaps you create, complete with vocabulary. And that picture?! Oh, nothing better than a sweet something for no reason at all. Ivan does look good in this show ( and love this wardrobe. Just no pink pants better ever surface.) Thank you. Thanks you!

"Oh hell no she didn’t!" What a clueless beyotch! I'm so sorry you are rotting away in prison while I already married your best friend and we'll be enjoying some nice cash. I wanted to slap her silly, Omar has better patience than I do. Than add to that her manipulation of her sister with the date, and she is such toast to me. Hell, she's worse than Lucio. Anything to get what she wants and then everyone should be fine with it.

I guess we can already guess Lucio's anvil. When that loan isn't paid back, he'll be getting a visit from a few folks. Might be justice to get the same smack down Omar had to go through.

They don't spare the details in the prison scenes do they, but it's realistic. Setting that guy on fire...wooo. My guess is Yago stayed with his mentor for a few more years, had the surgery to repair the facial damage, and when the mentor died he perhaps inherited his money, or some of it. Click on the revenge path.

I'm done with Abel. A little of him has gone a long way. His every move now to me is irritating and his wanna be smart guy demeanor and attitude is grating. What he pulled on Katia, grrrr. But I'm gringing whenever he shows up now. I'm almost hoping he's one of the first to get an anvil because the actor is on my last nerve.

So guessing a heart condition with Ambar? And hell no do I ever want to see Yago do a lip lock with Sara because he can't get over her. Hope we're warned because I need to salvage my TV and remove all throwable objects. And warn the fur balls.

Amazing recap Nandicta!! Even your English is better than mine! I can't remember seeing "fructify" before!!!

Love how each episode is chock full of new information.

First, Yagos last monologue saying his love for Sara remains has me freaking worried they will end up together. And I don't want Ambar dying to be her anvil.

Sara, for all her regrets, is still running cons. On her sister, on Yago...No Sympathy for her!!

The look on Lucios face when Bruno told him of his plans scared me. And after all he put that family through, has he not tossed that family any money? Sara or Abel either?

Oh Katia, her recovery must have been short bec it didn't take much for her to sink. Damn Abel. Didn't like him pushing a drunk woman to bed. Glad she got herself together quick enough to kick him out. I worry a lot more about her now.

The gall Sara had o visit Omar in jail. If she really loved him she would have gone with the express purpose of making him hate her, to kill whatever feeling he had left for her. To free him of that.

Also, she married Lucio pretty quickly after everything went down. Was it bec she knew she was pregnant with Omar's baby? She didn't look pregnant all those months later so I don't think the child could be Omar's. But do we know how many months had passed at that point?

Thank you Nandicta for all of your recaps. I haven't read this one yet but I know that I will be amazed.

I'm grateful to all recappers on Caray but especially this week since I haven't been able to watch any TNs. I'm having serious withdrawal!

It seems that the TN writers like the phrase, "revenge is a dish best served cold". It was just used in PyP, but I believe they lifted it from Star Trek II-The Wrath of Khan, where Ricardo Montalban (Khan) said it before he fired on the Enterprise.

Thank you Nandicta. Your recaps are always such a great read and the vocabulary you add is the icing on the cake. I don't know how you find the time to do all this work for us.

This whole premiere week has been great. I've enjoyed each episode. I'm loving how we get a little bit of the backstory with each episode.

I felt so bad for Melina being swindled by those con artists. That couple deserves an anvil.

Now we know what happened to Omar's face that led to the reconstruction and the birth of Yago. So was the fire at the prison planned by both Fidel and Omar so they could escape?

Lucio obtaining a loan from a loan shark can't lead to anything good. He better watch out if he doesn't make his first payment on time.

I'm worried about Katia and what could happen now that she has fallen off the bandwagon.

Nandicta you are nothing short of brillant.

"He cajoles her into accepting his idea. Or so he thinks"

I get the same queasy feeling when Yago is alone with Sara as my tree guy up a tree, no hands, and starts his chainsaw.

Nandicta,

Thanks for this amusing, insightful, and educational recap. Well done.

May I dare to add to your definition of feria as money? Isn't it even more specifically loose change or small change?

"Abel plies Katia... with vodka..."

Well, maybe at least a little less violent than pliering her.

This show is such fun so far, but shouldn't one wonder why Yago didn't just declare game over after winning the casino in that game of poker? His revenge plot better be pretty darn good to top that.

Mauricio,

"So was the fire at the prison planned by both Fidel and Omar so they could escape?"

If so, it looks to me like now they are both guilty of murder. Fidel certainly is by having that guy set on fire.

So Katia's Achilles heel is vodka? Looks like Yago's Achilles heel is Sara.

Carlos

Thanks Nandicta!

I'm disappointed that Omar/Yago still has feelings for Sara after everything she did. She is evil, man!!

They didn't really specify how many months had gone by, but if it were only 2 or 3, then she could have been pregnant without showing. I hope the kid isn't Yago's though. Besides, wouldn't Lucio have been really suspicious about the timing? Or did Sara have the doctors lie and say the baby was born premature? I'm already envisioning more lies! (Honestly the kid does not look to be 10-11 years old, but I am also terrible at guessing ages.)

I assumed Sara slept with Lucio the night he caught her with the blueprints and a night or two later she slept with Omar.

I keep thinking of the original Count of MC tale in my head as this progresses. A decided turn is that the female herself is part of those who betrayed our hero, and how you can redeem her, even with her initial tales, I don't see at this point. How they could justify ever putting those two together after what we keep seeing her pull...no. Just no.

The whole point of a revenge tale is that the revenge is often a hollow feeling once it is carried out, but in this tale, I want to see the anvils. If Yago feels bad, I'll volunteer to give him a good hug to help him feel better. I'm just selfish that way.

Daisynjay

I struggle with stories promoting true love as all forgiving and the more you can suffer unjustly the deeper the love. I hope this one doesn't spin into one of those but I see hints already.

Surely at some point Sara will expect forgiveness and Yago will give it since he didn't really die. How dare he fool her and put her through pain.

Thank you Nandicta.

Carvivile: Sara will continue to con until a major anvil hits her hard.

Tofie: Ambar has a heart condition... Uh oh!

I'm praying they don't kill her off.

J: Sara needs to die. She's the female version of Erick Montenegro!

Thanks, Nandicta. Terrific recap.

Oh noes, I can't believe Katia almost got it on with Abel. Didn't expect to see a chink in her armor so soon.

Figured Yago was still in love with Sara, so no surprise there. Poor thing probably thinks Lucio was the mastermind and corrupted his sweet Sara. Don't like her, but I guess she did love him in her way to go visit him after her betrayal. She's got grifter in her blood though to try to smooch Yago as a business negotiation move.

Great work, Nandicta.

Looks like I was wrong and the horribly-named Ambar is really ill. So what happened to all the stolen money? Did nobody take the child to the US for surgery and treatment?

Katia needs to be far more careful and I hope she stays away from Abel, whom I'd like to see disappear. His appearance and manner get on my last nerve and I fail to see how Lucio or Sara can trust him not to screw up.

Melina is in for a world of hurt when her husband finds out where the money went and more so when she finds out what Lucio did to Omar.

And how is it that Omar had a full beard when the bandages came off? Shouldn't it have been shaved before the plastic surgery?

It's time to begin listing all the crimes that will lead to the villains' Karmageddons. And the lies being told. I wish I had started listing the lies from YNCELH back in the day; it would have made that series far less confusing.

Yomar will be in a world of hurt when he finds out that Sara was the puppetmaster, not Lucio.

I'm thinking three ways about Lucio/Matias:

1) Sara fooled him into thinking the child was his; he is shocked, angry, disappointed etc. to find out Omar wins again; the prize is Sara's child.

2) Lucio already knows Matias is Omar's child and considers the child one more thing he took away from Omar.

3) Matias really is Lucio's child.

From what we know about Lucio & how he really feels about Omar, I think option #2 is the likely choice for him (if Matias really is Omar's child).

The child is too cute and too nice to be Lucio's, but Lucio doesn't know it yet. Sara is smart enough -- or was lucky enough -- to fool him into thinking Matias is his.

Thanks, Nandicta. Amazing you did so much over the weekend!

I also think Mathias is Omar's.

I know this story is based on The Count of Monte Cristo, but I keep thinking of the title character Yago as evocative of Iago from Othello.

Enraged by what most would consider a mundane disappointment (passed over for a promotion), Iago manipulated his enemies to destroy one another. Then something went wrong and he got caught and was imprisoned by his rival.

It's definitely a fine basis for a character, but unlike Iago, our Yago has a legitimate beef against his enemies. And I assume he will come out of the story a winner. So I guess I wonder why they picked that name. Were we supposed to think of Iago, or did someone just like the way it sounded?

Yago has to know the woman he loves doesn't exist. That mafioso guy told him that she was playing him from the start. How can he believe that all of her words and actions were not an act? How many more blows to the head does he need?! Argh!!

Good point, Julie. I was also wondering about that. The original character's surname was Dantes, so was that meant to evoke Dante Aligieri?

I also wonder about "Ambar," which I hate the sound of.

"Ambar" drives me crazy. It just sounds like her parents didn't know how to spell "Amber."

Urban... wow, I didn't realize Dante Aligieri's life had been so eventful. (I just read the Wikipedia article.) Yes, that makes sense.

Ambar is just Amber in Spanish. What's wrong about the way it sounds?

"Ambar" is indeed Spanish for amber (which I did not know until just now), but to me it just sounds a little off, like if we had a character name Padro instead of Pedro, or Piblo instead of Pablo.

It's not just that for me. It's also that this name in US television is typically given to teen chatacters who are spoiled little drama queens.

Perhaps Ambar will turn out to be a spoiled little drama queen?

Isn't "Yago" a nickname for "Santiago?" Wasn't the character of the stupid son in Amor Bravo named "Yago?"

Anon207- Santiago is Saint Iago/Yago. Diego (and Thiago/Tiago) is the shortened form of Santiago.

Thanks Nandicta, you educate us as well as entertain us. He shoud not fall for the croc tears. Shes worried for baby sis, but shes still
A crook. I can't see him with amber either. He
Should get his revenge and leave. Unless the
Writers got surprises waitin in the wings.

Isn't "yago" the name of a butter or spread?
Maybe not I like it though. That is a beautiful
Picture, that blue is pretty against that gray
Wallpaper. Ok done for now.

Anon207: Ambar as Daniela Montenegro 2.0 ????

We'll see about that!

Thank you all for stopping by over the weekend. Much appreciated, indeed. :)
