TELEMUNDO Y MÁS (#1): Eva la Trailera, La Esclava Blanca, El Señor de los Cielos #4 ¿Quién es Quién? & La Sombra de Helena: Week of June 20, 2016
Labels: esclava, eva-la-t, helena, quien, senor4, telemundo
deb et al .... It was a satisfying Gran Fin, IMO. I promise I watched Friday's 2-hrs, but must have fallen asleep because I have no idea how today's episode began with Ines confronting Fabiola, nor how Pedro got sprung from jail. Gah...
*** possible spoiler alert --- do not read below if you have not see the fin ***
At least Chamoy stopped Ignacio and (sort of) redeemed himself. We had our obligatory fairytale double wedding. All the good people ended up with their pareja. I was sort of surprised to see Ivonne with Basi. It was really pleasing to see Humberto and Ines together!
I know nothing about the telenovela that replaces Quién but its 2-hr airtime keeps it off my radar screen.
One of my favorite TNs ever! Yes, the Gran Fin doble boda and related pairings was satisfying. I don't usually like comedies, but Quién was subtle and clever. I loved the language, so much excellent slang, and the social commentary. Very impressed with Eugenio Siller's talents. He sang mariachi at the boda.
Doris, Humberto's crackerjack lawyers got Perico out of jail [there was a funny scene when he parted from his cellmate] and Inés bolted over to confront Fabi after Yesi clued Inés in on how Fabi threatened her at gunpoint to get to Rubén.
Clara
I just saw the finale. I'm going to miss this TN a lot. It's definitely my favorite! So funny and entertaining, and a satisfying, happy ending. Eugenio Siller did a great job with his two different characters, and I learned a ton of slang from Perico.
All I know about the new TN airing in its place is that it's a Brazilian one from 2014, but Telemundo's website doesn't even have a page for it in its Novelas section, so I'm not sure if I'll even be able to watch it (I don't have Telemundo so I have to watch online). For non-Spanish language TNs, do they usually do subtitles or dubbing?
J, the only TN I've watched on Telemundo that wasn't created in Spanish (it was in Portuguese, I think) was Avenida Brasil. That novela was both dubbed in Spanish and captioned in Spanish.
After Pablo tells Eva about the drug running at Mon-Sol, she asks if Marlene is trying to kill her. Pablo thinks she won’t risk it because the cops have their eye on her. Eva tells him about the confrontation they had in the hospital and how furious Marlene is about Eva’s company doing so well. Eva: “Ah, that’s it! La Alacrana is going to go after my company."
Pablo tells Eva he’ll take care of things and for her to stay at home, and Camila as well. [As if…]
At Casa Contreras Marisol, JJ and Pablo have on their black commando outfits. He says he’s not sure if it will be tonight or not. Ana shows up. She doesn’t even knock any more. Nosy as always she wants to know where they are going. Marisol, back to Ana and wearing a smug smile, says they’re going to save Eva Soler. Later on Dra. SF gets snarky with Martín. It kinda looks like she’d rather Eva NOT be saved.
Virginia is telling Camila her play-hard-to-get theory about men when Eva, impulsive as always, runs out after saying she’s going to defend her own interests.
Rebeca and Florentino Infante have gone to the terminal where Eva keeps her fleet. Rebeca shoots some poor guard inside the guard shack and drives in in a black van.
Pablo, Marisol and JJ arrive at the terminal and see the gate wide open and the wounded guard. After calling 911 for the guard, the Three Musketeers enter and see Florentino moving a box. Just then Eva shows up behind them and scares them.
Marlene tells Armando that Eva is not even going to be able to hold up her head. After she goes upstairs, he runs out.
Florentino asks Rebeca why they’re putting these drugs here. Rebeca snarls at him that these are orders from Marlene.
Pablo calls Marcos Fajardo to tell him what’s going on and that Rebeca Marín is involved.
Cinthia goes to the well one too many times with the fake suicide attempt. She’s called Luis, who isn’t buying it and asks her what she wants. She wants money, of course, so she and Robert can leave the country. [What did they do with the money he already gave them?] Luis says he’ll give her the money, but he narrows his eyes and asks her what’s the hurry. Who are they running from.
While Eva is catastrophizing about being put back in jail for the drugs, Rebeca sneaks up behind them to do some villain gloating, gun in hand. A gunfight breaks out. Marisol gets shot.
[I get a big kick out of the Tecate Beer commercial. A huge black eagle flies into a soccer stadium. He’s sitting on a rail watching when one of the players egregiously flops, hoping to get a foul on the other team’s player. The eagle raises his wing in a gesture of disgust. The ref is about to give the guy a yellow card when he looks at the eagle who cocks his head and looks significantly at the ref. The ref gives the guy a red card instead. Very cute.]
Cinthia keeps on begging, and Robert has come in as well. Luis: “You know what. I’m fed up with your lies and manipulations. I am Luis Mogollón, son of Pancho and Soraya, and I no longer have anything to do with the two of you.”
Rebeca and Florentino are trying to get away. Florentino says there are too many cops, gets out of the truck, and says he’s giving himself up. Rebeca shoots him in the back and, of course, this being a telenovela, she gets away.
Fajardo cuts into the usual shrink wrapped package to verify that it contains drugs. Then he notices Pablo with a gun and takes it from him. Eva, prickly as ever, accuses Pablo of having a hero complex.
We get a most unsatisfying scene at the police station. The captain who locked Pablo up for two weeks so he couldn’t get to Eva’s trial is still obsessing about what Pablo is doing.
Rebeca comes to confess her failure to Marlene, saying they expected her. Marlene: “Who?” Rebeca: “Why, Contreras and Eva Soler.” Marlene gnashes her teeth in rage at Eva having beaten her again. Rebeca reminds her that the cops now have the drugs belonging to the cartel. [But weren’t they always going to have the drugs or how else was Eva to be disgraced and put back in jail.?]
When the police captain starts lecturing Eva about going there, she tells him she only wanted to avoid the killer getting away and being herself thrown back in jail. El Capitán: “Are we just painted on the wall [are we chopped liver?]” He says they could have investigated and proven that she wasn’t guilty. Eva looks him dead in the eye and even moves a step closer. “I was already an innocent person spending time in jail because of your lousy investigations. You seriously expect me to believe in your justice?”
Another fight ensues between Pablo and Eva. She really is horrible to him. She says she doesn’t want his help because he’ll only throw it in her face. She goes on to tell him he’s weak because he can’t bear to be alone. [Whaaat? Wasn’t he a widower for years and years? What’s she talking about?]
The captain tries to get Eva to say that Pablo had a gun. This is ALL the guy cares about. But she’s too smart for him. When Pablo and Fajardo come in, she says that, instead of questioning why he was there, he ought to give him a medal for his help.
Marlene comes in to the police station to report one of her trucks on its way from Mexico being missing. Fajardo tells her that the missing driver she’s looking for is in the hospital after having been shot trying to sabotage one of the trucks owned by Eva Soler. Marlene tries out an insinuation on Fajardo about how Eva got the money to grow her business so well. Fajardo responds that he plans to do an inspection of her fleet. Marlene: “And if I refuse?” He says he’ll just get a search warrant and things won’t be so pleasant.
Enrique has come to plead with Virginia. She has no sympathy, telling him to come back when he’s divorced. He apparently doesn’t want to pay alimony. She has no sympathy, telling him to break out his savings. He does just that, coming to Agencias Contreras with fistfuls of cash to have them get something on the ex.
Marisol and JJ and cozier than ever. They both take some painkillers, her for the flesh wound and he to calm his nerves about seeing her shot. They declare their love and she asks him to move in.
Gusano and Elsa are nervous as two cats on a hot plate about the cops being there. They wonder where Marlene is. Well she’s at the hospital. Andy tells her the same thing Rebeca did: don’t mess with the cartel.
Adriana thinks Soraya needs to tell Luis her suspicions that the Monteverdes arranged the murder of his father because Luis dreamed about Pancho the night before.
Fajardo comes to see Armando in his office and asks him about two trucks that were recently repainted.
At the hospital Andy tells Marlene her plan is crap. Does she think everyone in the world besides her is stupid? Well, she kinda does. He says that Aristóbulo Cepeda of the Cartel del Norte is the smartest guy he’s ever met.
Later Marlene goes looking for this guy at some dive bar. After she leaves the bartender makes a call.
At the police station Soraya identifies one of the guys who ran she and Pancho off the road, the one who was killed in jail. She’s unsure about the other one. Fajardo appears to be going to take her to the hospital to have a look at Florentino.
Marlene comes home to find the capo Aristóbulo Cepeda ensconced in her Living Room. He asks if she had been looking for him. He calls her reina. [Surely they’re not going with Erika de la Rosa doing the same thing she did in Bajo el Mismo Cielo, seducing a criminal to get her way!]
Looks like this will be part of the "Martres" thing in July, and a new telenovela that will begin at that time? Looks interesting, might be fun, and I plan to give it a try although I'll be out of town at the same time, and will miss the first two weeks. (wah)
For those who want to read and comment on a final recap for Quien, Kat/5 Ft. Diva has one on her site: http://5ftlatina.com/cohete/2016/06/20/el-gran-final-de-quien-es-quien-monday-62016-91/
Miguel meets up with Trinidad, who is relieved that they are both safe since Remedios was so worried. He catches himself, and of course everyone else was worried about them too... Miguel tells him the tunnel leads to the sea, but there was a cave in they’ll need to fix. They’re both happy that they have a way of getting out of there soon.
Adela barges into the inn looking for Isabel. She looks at Lorenza (but doesn’t seem to recognize her), calls it brujería (witchcraft), and drags Isabel outside. Adela slaps her hard when Isabel threatens to tell Nicolas that the Marquesa went missing because of her (in response to Adela saying she would tell Nicolas about what she’s doing.) Isabel yells that she hates her. Adela yells that the music classes are over; Gabriel cannot come to El Eden anymore. The Padre stands by being useless as always.
Lorenza tells Abdul she can’t be there anymore. Viste lo que se armó? (Did you see the big fuss/commotion?) She isn’t doing any good; people come to her for answers that she can’t give. She is a fraud since she doesn’t remember anything about her life in Africa and she can’t tell the future; the only thing she knows is what he told her. Abdul warns her to lower her voice; people could hear her and that would hurt business.
At Eugenia’s, Victoria stumbles in pretending to be drunk and yells at Nicolas that she hates him and he disgusts her. Nuestro matrimonio no vale nada! (Our marriage is worthless!) She breaks a vase and goes into the other room. Eugenia pretends to be angry and wants Victoria out of her house since all the neighbors heard her screaming during the night. Nicolas isn’t really buying it since he knows Eugenia doesn’t care what people think of her, but Eugenia knows that he does care what people say about him.
Abdul tells Lorenza the “ story” of how she got hurt and lost her memory: they were out walking one day, when some robbers shot him and she ran away. When he woke up, he found her con la cabeza reventada y con la cara surcada (with a bashed head and slashed face). He cried thinking that he had lost her forever. [However, the flashbacks show the real story – Abdul found Lorenza lying next to the water, thought she was dead, tried to steal her necklace, but Lorenza woke up and kept saying ologimi.] Lorenza wants to be alone for a while, so she walks away. Abdul notices she left her veil on the table and insists she can’t salir sin el velo de la cara (go out without the veil on her face).
Victoria pretends to attack Bunme with a knife. Nicolas rushes in in the room, and Victoria falls into his arms crying me has roto el corazón y ya no quiero seguir así (you broke my heart and I don’t want to go on like this).
Miguel arrives in the fields and tells Julian that he searched everywhere for the Marquesa but couldn’t find her. Julian doesn’t suspect anything, saying she has been found, so Miguel can go back to his normal work.
Adela and Isabel arrive at El Eden, still fighting and yelling at each other. Isabel threatens to tell Nicolas about the slap, and says that Adela is no longer her grandmother. She’s going to be 17 soon, so stop treating her like she’s 5! She locks herself in her room. Remedios tells Adela that Nicolas has returned, but he left to get Victoria from Eugenia’s house. Adela just sighs.
Eugenia and Bunme laugh about Nicolas believing everything and how good Victoria was acting drunk. Eugenia leaves Bunme in charge of finding men to steal the shipment, but they can’t be from around there.
Nicolas brings Victoria back to El Eden, carrying her inside since she’s still too “drunk”. He leaves her in Remedios’ care. After he and Adela leave, Victoria tells Reme they can no longer count on getting the boat. But there is even more bad news: not only are they in debt to Eugenia and have to steal the cacao shipment from Nicolas, part of the tunnel collapsed.
Adela wants Nicolas to explain what happened with the Marquesa, but he is tired and wants to rest. He tells her that she was at Eugenia’s, jealous about the supposed affair, which shows him that she does love him and will fight for him. Adela thinks men are idiots.
Enith is really suspicious of Miguel being in the tunnel the entire time the Marquesa was missing. Tomas says it was fortunate that everyone was looking for the Marquesa that they didn’t worry about where Miguel was. He asks where the collapse in the tunnel was, and Trinidad says they need to find a way to get the dirt out without anyone noticing. Tomas changes the subject slightly: It’s a miracle that Miguel was able to get out. Miguel thanks the spirit of Mama Lorenza, since he felt her presence. Tomas knows that even though she’s dead, she is always with them.
Milagros learns about the deal with Eugenia from Victoria, and how they will no longer have money for the boat because of it. Nicolas wants to talk to Victoria alone. She pretends to be ashamed of what she did, but Nicolas doesn’t care. He knows now how much he means to her and their marriage is stronger than ever. Esta noche dormiremos juntos (Tonight we will sleep together). Victoria fake smiles at him.
Manuela visits Lorenza and wants her to show how her telling the future stuff works. Lorenza obliges since she had previously said she would give Manuela a consultation. Of course the one question Manuela has in her mind is about Gabriel. She seems impatient. Yo puedo tirar 100 veces las conchas, y 100 veces me van a dar la misma respuesta. Ese hombre no es para ti (I can throw the shells 100 times, and 100 times they are going to give me the same answer. That man is not for you). Manuela gets angry, saying that Lorenza doesn’t know anything and leaves as Abdul enters. She informs him that their deal is off; he needs to pay her for their stay at the inn. Lorenza is not liking Santa Marta at all.
Gabriel breaks it to Jesus and Angela that he can’t go back to El Eden because of Adela, which makes things more difficult for them since he was their way of getting the tools in to the slaves for the excavation of the tunnel.
Paca helps Ana to the living room so she can talk to Felipe. She wants to ask forgiveness for everything that Francisco did. Felipe the saint tells her there is no need, everything is Francisco’s fault and not hers because he’s un salvaje (brute). Ana feels like she has to leave since she’s a married woman, no esta bien visto (), and it could cause problems for Felipe. Felipe doesn’t care, problems are what he likes best in life and they’ll talk about it when she’s better. He changes the subject – usted por qué llamo asesino a su marido (why do you call your husband a murderer)? Paca interrupts before Ana can respond.
Angela is there to talk to Felipe about the plan. Even if they can dig out the tunnel and get everyone to the sea, eso sigue siendo territorio nacional. Está sujeto a las leyes de propiedad (that remains national territory. It is subject to property laws). Angela tells him about the plan to get a boat and that it’s already arranged. What they need now is a way to get the musicians into El Eden so they can bring in all the tools unnoticed. She asks Felipe if he is still with them. Claro que sí (of course), he responds.
Milagros tells Siervo about the tunnel collapsing, but he just says it can be fixed. She asks him to cover her for a little while, and she goes to see Julian. They had a pending conversation, but they aren’t exactly doing a lot of talking... Milagros says she has to go, but she wanted to ask about Hilaria. Did Nicolas sell her to the mines to see her children like he had promised Adela? Julian tells her the truth, but she cannot tell anyone.
Nicolas goes to see Isabel. She wakes up happy to see him and gives him a hug. Adela told him about her leaving the church, which Isabel doesn’t deny, and she adds that Adela gave her a bofetada (slap) and she wasn’t doing anything bad. Mentira! Adela yells as she waltzes in the room. Well, the bofetada was real, she admits, but tell him why I slapped you. She was in una sesión de hechicería (withcraft session) with a black woman! Isabel counters that Adela needs antiparras (glasses) because what she doesn’t see, she just makes up. Nicolas stops their bickering – Isabel will not be rude to her grandmother, and Adela will not hit Isabel again. Adela storms off. Isabel asks Nicolas to not leave again for such a long time. Nicolas just wants her to obey orders.
Adela asks Nicolas if he sold Hilaria to the mines. Of course, she must be working hard next to her children. Adela notes that being with their children is the only thing a mother wants. She apologizes for the way she talked to him in front of Isabel. Nicolas never wants her to do it again, in front of Isabel or anyone else.
Nicolas joins Victoria in her bed. She complains her stomach hurts from the alcohol. He thinks it could also be passion. She is the only woman for him and he’s going to be the only man for her. He tells her to rest. Ampliaremos la familia cuando los dos creamos que es el mejor momento (We will expand the family when we both think it’s the best time).
The slaves work on the cacao stuff and package everything up. Victoria pretends to want to know all about Nicolas’ business, to get him to talk about the shipment. It will be taken to the port the next day.
Victoria wants Siervo to give a message to Eugenia. Adela comes into the kitchen, so she pretends to be instructing Milagros on how to make paella for her husband. She asks Siervo to go to the market to get azafrán (saffron). Adela tastes the paella and notes that it is very different to Hilaria’s. De pronto consigo que mi hijo me la devuelva de las minas (Soon I’ll get my son to bring her back to me from the mines). Milagros can’t resist asking how Adela knows that Hilaria really is in the mines. Adela just tells her to ask fewer questions and work more.
Eugenia runs into the General in Santa Marta and tells him that the Marquesa has been found since she was at her house the entire time. The Parreños didn’t tell him anything. Eugenia informs him that the Marquesa was visiting her since they had become good friends and Eugenia didn’t want her to return home at night because the roads were too dangerous. She invites the General to lunch.
Siervo delivers the message to Eugenia. She is very happy with what she reads. Esto va a ser como quitarle un caramelo a un niño (This is going to be like stealing candy from a baby). Nicolas, a guard, Miguel and a slave will be moving the shipment. Bunme tells her everything is ready.
Everyone loves the paella, except Adela of course. Isabel starts talking about her birthday party. She wants Gabriel and the other musicians to come play for her. Nicolas seems more concentrated on the food. Hagan lo que quieran (Do what you want).
Felipe arrives to apologize to Nicolas for threatening him with his gun after Catalina died. He also needs his and Victoria’s help with Ana. Francisco almost beat her to death and Felipe wants to prevent Francisco from taking her home. Nicolas agrees with Victoria that they need to do something right away. Nicolas also remarks that his friends are all turning out to be horrible people and he’s ashamed of them. Felipe signals to Victoria, who makes up an excuse about forgetting to offer him coffee in order to leave the room. A few seconds later, Felipe claims he just remembered that coffee hasn’t been agreeing with him these days as he also leaves the room. Nicolas stands up looking slightly bewildered.
What a great final! It’s been such a joy to watch a novela that wasn’t chopped to pieces. How luxurious to enjoy nice long flashbacks, and scenes where the characters give each other Meaningful Looks before we cut to the next scene, but mainly to have the whole thing there as the creators intended.
I was worried when I saw the final was just one hour, but they wrapped everything up beautifully. Well, almost – they had set the storyline up for Nora to end up with Humberto, her long-time secret love, and then he ended up with Inez, and there was Nora, the only un-paired major character, looking on smiling gamely.
I very much enjoyed how the main story line was plotted – very complex and very clever. The Tania side story wasn’t that engaging, but who cares?
What a terrific cast. I was extremely impressed with Eugenio Siller. I remember some years ago he seemed a bit wet behind the ears, though very appealing, but I thought he hit it out of the park with this double role. He has really grown as an actor.
Terrific novela!!! I feel bad for the cast and creators that it got moved to daytime.
Maggie --- re: Nora, I know! I felt badly for her but she was a trouper and held no resentment toward Ines for ending up with Humberto.
This is the third telenovela I've seen that had Laura Flores and Eugenio Siller cast as mother and son. They really have good chemistry together. I'm a big fan of Laura F's and Siller has grown on me, to the point where I am a fan, especially after Reina de Corazones. He wasn't all that great in ADCLG but it may have been the role or how he was told to play it. Or it could just be cumulative acting experience and maturity. Whatevs..... I look forward to his next 'novela.
The use of the phrase "quién es quién" was heard more than once, during that final episode, and that was cute. I liked the scene where Ines could not tell them apart!
thanks so much J!
so Abdul and Lorenza may not be married like he told Manuela when they checked in.
I currently don't have any captions so unless that changes I won't be able to do any recaps, I'll post again before I see the show tonight.
Muchφsimas gracias, novelera, for this excellent recap. I especially loved your asides, such as your comment about the inconsistency of Marlene's plan using the drugs to incriminate Eva, your "[Whaaat? Wasn’t he a widower for years and years? What’s she talking about?]" and "[Surely they’re not going with Erika de la Rosa doing the same thing she did in Bajo el Mismo Cielo, seducing a criminal to get her way!]" I suspect you're probably right about this, though I also enjoyed SpanProf's suggestion that the writers should make the drug lord gay.
Thanks too for helping me understand that pintados a la pared means (more or less) "are we chopped liver"? I was at a loss, and I love your translation.
Although Eva continued to drive me crazy through most of the episode, I cheered when she expressed her lack of confidence in the powers that be: “I was already an innocent person spending time in jail because of your lousy investigations. You seriously expect me to believe in your justice?” I was also pleased that she didn't say that Pablo was armed. That whole business about Pablo's no longer being able to carry a gun seems as senseless to me now as it did when the chief of police (or whoever) decided that should be so.
I also cheered when Luis's brain started functioning again and he stood up to the Monteverdes.
One small point: I was under the impression that Rebeca hit the guard over the head with the butt of her gun. I assumed she wanted to get him out of the way without making noise that might attract unwanted attention.
Many thanks, J, for another remarkable recap. They're such a joy to read! I especially appreciated last night's, since I was so exhausted that I gave up half way through the episode and went to bed.
Thanks so much, J, for another well-done recap.
Adela is just ghastly. I hope Isabel sticks with her "I hate you" as she richly deserves to have her beloved granddaughter being estranged.
The Lorenza-Abdul situation is very weird. I thought they had shown Lorenza having some special powers early on in the novela. Don't exactly remember. But now she's saying she's a fraud and can't predict the future at all. That Abdul is one scumbag! And, is he afraid someone will recognize her by the scar on her face? If he's too close to where he found her by the river, why did he even come to Santa Marta? [I know, expecting logic from telenovelas is often hopeless.]
Well, now don't know if my "chopped liver" translation was completely apt. I think of it as a Jewish saying that's moved into somewhat popular usage. It's hard to exactly define. Something like: If you're looking for a handsome guy, a smart woman, a decent cop, then what am I, chopped liver? It sort of means, can't you see what's right in front of you.
Here is a Spanish definition I found for estar pintado en la pared:
(Estar simplemente un adorno, ornamento, una pintura colgada, etc), which I interpret to mean something without practical use.
Thanks very much, novelera, for your very helpful clarification. I understand the "chopped liver" expression the same way you do. However, in light of the Spanish definition you found, perhaps "are we chopped liver?" may not be quite right. But I still like it! (And where did you find the Spanish definition? I'm always looking for more resources.)
We had some storms again tonight, and Telemundo again cut off the sound for a while and posted warnings. The cut-offs were much shorter than the last time, but they still made it more difficult to follow what was happening.
Anyway, the episode begins where yesterday's left off. Marlene comes home to find the drug lord Aristóbulo Cepeda and some of his men in her house. Cepeda makes it clear that he's in charge, and he doesn't like being interrupted. After acknowledging that Marlene is good looking and elegant, he gets down to business: "Why did only 70% of my drugs arrive? What did you do with my drugs?" Marlene tells him that she didn't rob him, he was robbed by someone else: Eva Soler. Cepeda asks for more information. Marlene tells him that Eva is her worst enemy, and that "she robbed the drugs to try to get me into trouble with you." Marlene adds that Eva didn't act alone, she was helped by some women who were together with her in prison, especially someone very dangerous named Rebeca Marin. [Loyalty is apparently not Marlene's strong point.] Moreover, adds Marlene, "they say she shot one of the men you sent, Florentino Infante." She claims that Eva is also very likely the person who arranged for Melchor's death in prison. Cepeda tells Marlene that he plans to verify everything she has said, and if she's lying to him, she'd better look for a rocket to the moon (un cohete a la luna), because if she's on Earth, he'll find her. He leaves, after adding that she'll find Armando tied up upstairs. After Cepeda is out of the house, he tells his men to investigate Eva Soler.
Marlene rushes upstairs and finds Armando bound and gagged. She frees him, they talk, and she asks, "What worries you more, that we have a problem with the cartel or that Eva has problems?" Armando replies that "we" don't exist. He says he'd prefer to be killed or in prison: "Anything is better than living in this hell with you."
Eva, meanwhile, is busy at work, talking long distance with one of her drivers, when Doctora SweetFace comes to see her to talk about "the only topic we have in common, Pablo Contreras." Dr SF wants to know whether Eva truly loves Pablo. She tells Eva, "I think that for the first time in my life, I'm in love. I don't want to give him up, but I also don't want to interpose if the two of you are truly in love." "Wow, how generous of you," Eva sarcastically responds. She tells Dr SF "I don't need you to cede Pablo because I don't tie someone to me by force (No necesito que tu me cedas a Pablo porque yo no soy de las que amarran a un hombre por la fuerza). The conversation goes back and forth, and Eva finally claims, "It's not a question of altruism, generosity, or goodness. You came because you don't want to give up Pablo and you came to find out how much I'm willing to fight for him." Eva then tells SF that she has a "little gift" (regalito) for her: "I want nothing of Pablo Contreras." The conversation finally ends when SweetFace receives a phone call from Pablo telling her that Diego is in the hospital with a high fever and convulsions. Eva asks to be kept informed. [I'm not sure what I think about this conversation. Has Eva accurately cut through SweetFace's supposedly altruistic motivations, or is Eva once again being stubborn and unreasonable? Perhaps both things are true?]
Soraya is at the hospital [I think] talking with Fajardo about Pancho's murder and her suspicions about the Monteverdes. Fajardo tells her that right now, her suspicion is just that, a feeling (una corazonada). He asks her to have a look at a person who is suspected of being the second driver in the truck that forced the Mogollons' car off the road. The suspect has been shot and is in a coma. They enter the hospital room. Soraya takes a look at Florentino, and she immediately has a memory of the incident, including somehow a clear look at Florentino's face as he sat in the truck next to the driver [I'm a bit skeptical that she could see through Pancho and up into the truck, but telenovelas sometimes grant strange powers.]. She immediately says that he's the man, and she becomes very upset. "I'm going to kill him!" (¡Lo voy a matar!) she screams repeatedly. They leave the hospital room, and Fajardo tells her that now that she has identified the man, they're closer to finding out who ordered the killing.
The scene shifts to the Monteverdes. Robert seems not to be able to get the toaster to work (perhaps because he has never had to make toast for himself?). Cinthia has more serious problems: "Look at my nails!" she cries, holding up her hands. "I have the nails of a homeless person!" She tells Robert he should get a job. He asks when in her life she has ever worked, and he calls her a parasite. In the midst of this loving discussion, Fajardo arrives. "I've come to see you about an accident...or, rather, about the assassination of Pancho Mogollon." Robert of course replies that they had nothing to do with Pancho's death, and besides, it was an accident. Fajardo tells him there's new evidence. Someone contracted for the killing, someone who didn't want Pancho Mogollon alive. "You're accusing us without proof," claims Robert. He then invokes his "6th amendment right" and demands to see his lawyer. Fajardo replies that it's the 5th amendment, and Robert should stop acting like a clown (payaso), he has no money to call a lawyer. Fajardo says the rest of the conversation should take place in the police station.
Enrique talks with JJ about wanting a divorce. JJ assures him that "if the woman is what you say, we should soon be able to catch her red-handed (agarrarla con las manos en la masa).
Soraya is now at home and has calmed down a bit. She and Adri talk. Adri expresses admiration and perhaps envy for the loving relationship Soraya and Pancho had. She says she hopes she and Luis will have a similar one. Soraya suddenly goes into Soraya Mode. She explains to Adri that she has always had feelings, presentiments, premonitions, even when she was a child. She's having a feeling now. There's a radiant aura around Adri. A niña, a mini-furia. "This baby would make me very happy and your mother, too," says Soraya. Adri says perhaps in five or ten years. Soraya tells her "The baby will arrive sooner than you expect. It will happen on a day when Luis comes home very hungry." Well, needless to say, Luis arrives at that very moment, saying "I've come to eat with my two beautiful women. You can't imagine how hungry I am!" Soraya leaves, telling them to behave themselves. Luis turns to Adri and says,"Let's go upstairs and behave ourselves!"
Marlene comes back to Rebeca and tells her that they have to get Andy out of the hospital. "I've blamed everything on Eva," she tells the delighted Rebeca, "but I'm not sure Cepeda believes me. I don't want him harming Andy." Rebeca picks up a large briefcase from the couch [I'm assuming it's the one Marlene walked in with]. It opens, and she stares at stacks of money and what looks like a package of white powder.
Armando and Evencio are in Armando's office. Armando hands Evencio a file containing his will. Evencio is surprised, because he feels loyal to Eva, not to Armando. Armando says that's exactly why he's entrusting Evencio with the will: he's loyal. He also admires Evencio, who has lost everything but has moved ahead, and has even stopped drinking. Armando says he's leaving everything to Eva and their daughters. Evencio should tell absolutely no one about this will, not even Eva.
Eva picks up Fabi at school. Fabi gets upset that someone is taking photos of her and Eva. Eva sees two men, one with a camera, in an ominous black car, driving away. The men report back to Cepeda that Eva seems very normal. "I don't believe in normal," replies Cepeda. "Keep watching her."
Fajardo interrogates Robert at the police station. He raises all the issues that may involve Robert: the sabotage of Panchopan, the stealing of Luis as a baby, the fraudulent negotiation that Pancho discovered. Robert suddenly claims he doesn't feel well and acts as if he can't breathe. He calls for Cinthia, who insists that the interrogation stop at once. Fajardo calls for medical help. [I'm not sure whether Fajardo believes that Robert is really ill. I don't.]
After Pablo tells SweetFace that he finds her very attractive and he's very grateful to her [but doesn't say I love you], SF tells him she thinks they should have a pause in their relationship. As she leaves, she sees him staring into space [not the look of a man in love].
At the hospital, Fajardo tells Marlene that her driver has been identified as one of the drivers involved in the death of Pancho Mogollon. She acts unconcerned and demands to see her brother. Fajardo agrees. She tells Andy that he'll get out of the hospital that night. Rebeca will help him get out [I wonder what she said to Rebeca about the contents of the briefcase]. She gives him some pills that he'll know what to do with [presumably drug some food or drink]. Later, when the guard comes in, Andy offers him some custard. The guard refuses, since he has diabetes. "Too bad, that would have made things easier," says Andy, as Rebeca sneaks up behind the guard and injects somethng into his neck. The guard collapses, Andy puts on the guard's uniform, and he and Rebeca walk carefully out of the hospital, passing unseen behind Pablo, who is on the phone. Pablo is presumably there to see Diego, who is much better and will soon be able to go home. Marlene is waiting for Andy and Rebeca in the car, and they drive off.
Eva returns home to find Cepeda and his men already there. "Who are you?" she asks. "It depends on your responses, if they're true or lies," Cepeda tells her. "I can be your life--or your death. You decide." Red truck time.
Muchas gracias, SpanProf, for your great response. I loved your description of the drug lord's appearance. I smiled at your question "Wouldn't someone like El Señor take out both Marlene and Eva, just in case?" Yes, he probably would, but first he'd take each of them (or both of them) to bed.
Wow, I haven't thought about Lee Atwater in many years. He and Marlene seem to have the same nastiness gene. IIRC, he eventually became religious and repented; I very strongly doubt we'll see something similar from Marlene. I sure hope not; I want to see her SUFFER!
In most telenovelas that I've seen, it's pretty clear early on who will wind up with whom at the end. With this one, though, I'm not so sure. Will Eva and Pablo be a couple at the end? Or will Eva decide she'd rather go off on her own, as the theme song video seems to suggest? Will Pablo wind up with SweetFace in spite of SweetFace's lying about Betty's deathbed letter? Will Soraya find the memory of Pancho enough to keep her warm at night? And what if anything is in store for Rey? And for Fajardo? Ah, so many pairings, so little time.
Yes, SpanProf, Fajardo did put his hand on top of Soraya's for a Telenovela Moment. Such Moments are often Significant, but somehow it just seems too soon for Soraya to be able to share her affection. Though if anyone can perform miracles (and deserve them), it's certainly Soraya.
Felipe is able to tell Victoria that the musicians from the Pimentel inn need to come to El Eden before Nicolas catches up to them outside. Nicolas asks why he changed his mind about him. Felipe answers that Nicolas was just deceived by his friends who turned out to be bad people. He leaves and Victoria sweet talks Nicolas into going to talk to Francisco right then since she’s really worried about Ana (and therefore getting out of spending the night with him again).
Milagros tells Victoria that she’s in love with Julian. Victoria is somewhat happy for her, but tells her not to let Julian know about the plan or tunnels. Milagros sheds a tear, knowing that she will never see him again after they escape.
Francisco is realllllly paranoid. He looks like a hot mess, and his house does too. He tells Nicolas that one of his (Nicolas’) slaves attacked him, and let his own slaves escape. Nicolas questions if it was Miguel, but Francisco didn’t see his face and Nicolas is not convinced that Miguel would do it and return to El Eden instead of escaping with the other slaves. Francisco thinks there’s no proof against him of killing the slaves since he took care of his loose end (i.e. killing Garcia), and he asks Nicolas if he took care of his, but he doesn’t respond.
At the manicomio, Morales is in a straight jacket chained up, talking to himself. Everything was on Nicolas' orders, he ordered me to set the fire and kill the Quinteros but I couldn’t kill that girl... He starts yelling and the padre comes over. Morales confesses everything to him, including that Victoria Quintero is the real heir to El Eden and he never killed her like Nicolas ordered him to.
Nicolas tells Francisco that Hilaria couldn’t get any useful information about the causa. He also tells him that he should bring his wife home and get more slaves to make him money because he can’t live like that. Francisco gets up angry and drunk, saying he tried to force Ana home and it didn’t work. Nicolas suggests there are more subtle ways of getting what you want.
The padre has let Morales out and feeds him well. Morales does not have kind words about Adela, who always treated the employees just like they were slaves. Then he gets really angry talking about Nicolas, the murderer, and who he would kill with his own hands if he were right in front of him. The padre believes him, and he wants ALL the details about what Nicolas has done.
Francisco tells Nicolas that he has no money to buy more slaves and he doesn’t want those people around him anyway. He’s no longer a soldier either. Nicolas proposes that he rent a house in Santa Marta from him, and work for him... in a job where he needs someone he can trust... if you get what I mean... Francisco is insulted that Nicolas thinks they are not equal since he’s a landowner just like him. Nicolas just responds that they are NOT equal because he is NOT broke like Francisco, so think it over.
Lovey dovey time with Julian and Milagros. She wants to make him breakfast the next day but he declines. He will be part of the team taking the cacao shipment to the port, but they’ll be using a different road since there have been too many robberies. Milagros sneaks back into the main house to tell Victoria. Adela hears noises and snoops around, but Remedios won’t open the door much.
Victoria says they sent wrong information to Eugenia, but there’s no way to send someone now to correct it. Nicolas arrives home and Milagros is able to hide before he goes in to see his wife, who is still pretending to sleep.
Siervo wants to be the first to get punished so he can do his part for the causa. Trinidad thinks only the young people should do it. Siervo should stay in the house and deliver messages like he has been doing. Miguel thinks he’s the only one who should be giving orders, and makes it clear to Trinidad. Siervo goes back to the house and explains to Milagros what she needs to do next.
Victoria tells Nicolas she wants to go to the church and start planning for Isabel’s party. He suggests she come with him, and they’ll go to Santa Marta after dropping off the shipment at the port.
Milagros brings Adela in the room, interrupting Siervo who was “stealing” something. She hits him, Victoria yells at her (and I don’t think she understands what Siervo and Milagros are up to). Adela hopes he’ll be punished.
Sure enough, Julian leads Siervo out to the pit. Trinidad is angry that Siervo didn’t listen to him. Even worse, Victoria and Reme have no messenger to send to Eugenia anymore. They will have to do it themselves. Victoria once again sweet talks Nicolas into letting her go to Santa Marta with Reme and they will meet up after he takes care of the shipment. Unfortunately, Adela is going with them to help with Isabel’s party.
Milagros learns that Siervo acted on his own, and it was actually Trinidad who was supposed to get punished first. Trinidad and Miguel help Siervo down into the pit. He seems to be in a lot of pain.
Milagros helps Candela put tools in the cart with all the laundry but they’re too big. Milagros goes into the house to grab more clothes and sheets to cover up the shovels. Julian is happy that she’s going with them. More flirting that they do not try to hide. Candela’s afraid of what he’ll do if he finds out Milagros is just using him. At the river, Milagros gets Julian to follow her into the woods for some fun so Candela can take the tools to Siervo in the pit. Nicolas starts riding up on his horse, so Candela’s bright idea is to jump into the pit with Siervo.
Siervo manages to get Candela and the tools through the hole before Nicolas walks over to the pit. He wants to know why Siervo started stealing from him. Siervo claims it was because he needed money, knowing that in his old age, they could throw him out on the street at any time. Nicolas seems to believe it, and asks Siervo to be his spy among the slaves, especially Miguel and his friends. He’ll bring him out of the pit the next day – but Siervo says no, wait a few more days or the slaves will doubt you. Nicolas leaves, still looking a little suspicious of Siervo.
Julian wants something more serious with Milagros, he wants them to get married and have kids, he’s going to talk to Nicolas – but Milagros shuts that down quickly, partly because she knows they can't be together forever and also because she doesn’t want kids with anyone since they would be slaves.
Candela thinks old Siervo is going to be loyal to Nicolas but he sets her straight. He’s loyal to the causa and will find out what Nicolas’ plans are. Back at the river, Julian notices that Candela is missing. Milagros and Enith are worried.
Top-notch recap, Juanita. As always, I love your writing style. “Loyalty is apparently not Marlene’s strong point” [Ya think?] There are several “b” words that apply to her—betrayal and at least one other.
I’m not certain what was up with the money in the bag. My recollection (not always reliable) is that Marlene, as usual giving orders to others and doing nothing herself, was asking Rebeca to put together some “things” Andy would need after they busted him out of the hospital. I thought Rebeca opened up a black bag and inside was the money Andy got when Robert forged an amount on Soraya’s check. I made the connection because of “things for Andy”. It’s also possible Marlene could have made a withdrawal from the Cayman Islands to pay off Aristóbulo, but that seems less likely to me. Surely Marlene is planning for any payback to come from Eva.
I have mixed feelings about what might happen with the narco. Part of me thinks he’ll be astute and quickly grasp that Eva is his kind of people; i.e., from humble roots and, in her case, honest. But, on the other hand, it’s too soon for Marlene to be beaten up, killed, or for any major reprisals from the cartel.
Katie Barbieri (Cinthia) is from the United States and, of course, speaks perfect English. I get a kick out of how she throws in the odd, perfectly pronounced word in English (homeless).
I’m sure it will come to pass because Soraya’s sixth-sense feelings apparently always do, but I don’t think Luis and Adriana should have a baby right now. Not that they won’t be good parents, but I think they deserve a year or so of being a young couple that can travel, sleep late, etc., etc.
I know how you feel, Romy! But I also think this novela would have half as many episodes if all the plans did work perfectly the first time.
As for Abdul and Lorenza, I don't know if they are actually married since he seems to be a complete conman. Lorenza might have had some powers before, but with her head injury, she can't remember or doesn't have them anymore. And I don't think she's considered a slave now, since Abdul is claiming she's some fortune-teller from Africa.
Well, SpanProf, I guess if I'm willing to accept Soraya's sixth sense, I should also be open to Pancho's sending her a sign. :-)
Thanks so much, novelera, for your kind words and insightful comments. Your praise means a lot to me.
Hmmm..."b" words. Gosh, let me think...Um, Bad girl? :-)
I like your idea about the money being from Robert's payment to Andy. Though why was there also what looked like a package of white powder? Then again, that's perhaps also something Andy may need :-).
I'd love the narco to turn out to be a good bad guy, but I think you're right that we're not quite close enough to the end yet for the ultimate takedown. Andy could fall, Rebeca could fall, but I suspect Marlene will hang on until the last or next-to-last capítulo. (Which, of course, is only a bit more than 3½ weeks away.)
SpanProf, thanks for the cyber sympathy card about the Warriors. The wound is still tender. But I have slightly less pain than my co-workers as I was born and raised in Akron, Ohio, just like LeBron James! I moved away more than 40 years ago, but still feel I'll always be an Ohio girl in some way.
Thanks so much, J, great job on the recap.
I'm pretty sure the guy Morales told the story of Nicolás getting him to burn up the Quinteros was an abbot, the head of a monastery (in this case a nuthouse) rather than a priest. The guy was bribed to take on Morales so he couldn't talk to anyone. I suspect that now this abbot, who had quite the gleam in his eye when he saw the leather pouch full of money from Nicolás, will be asking for some hush money pretty soon.
Thanks novelera. I'm lost when it comes to religion, so thanks for clarifying his title. He definitely looked like he would be an evil guy who just wants money; here's hoping for another enemy for Nicolas!
thanks so much for the wonderful recap Juanita!
I too thought that was Andy's backpack with the cash that he left at their hideout when he went off to track down Camila, the bad girls didn't know he was going to make a run for it, hence the surprised looks.
I've got captions back (thanks to Telemundo), got my recorder working again, so I should be able to do the recap tonight.
J- thanks so much for your generousity in doing last night's recap, you already do so much with your magnificient summaries, this helped me tremendously and hopefully I'm back on track.
I saw a promo tonight for what appears to be an English Language version of La Reina del Sur: Queen of the South. Looks like episode one is tomorrow night at 10:00 on USA network. My On Screen Guide said Episode 1 of Season 1. I suspect it will be once a week like most English programs in the evening, as opposed to daily like daytime soaps or evening TNs. I set it to record, mostly out of curiosity. I have my doubts anyone could surpass Kate del Castillo.
Should have said that Queen of the South is Thursday evening, not tomorrow, in case this is read in the morning and someone thinks it's on Friday.
part 1
Eva tells Zepeda about Marlene planting the drugs to wreck her business and send her to jail, the police have them, he says he is a no-nonsense guy and he doesn't like to waist time, Marlene is his business partner, so you think you are better than us, nope Eva says, I'm not better or worse than anyone, I run an honest business hauling legal merchandise, I'm a truck driver, I'm the mother of two, I did not steal from you, Eva speaks without a flinch looking him straight in the eyes, and I hate what you do, my daughter was coaxed into doing drugs, it ruins the lives of mothers and daughters, you have no idea the pain you cause with the crap you sell.
ah but your mutual hatred with Marlene, but you share the same husband, I don't share anything with that woman Eva says, Armando is my EX-marido.
Virginia and Cami think Eva takes to many risks.
Rebeca is thrilled that they pulled off another caper, we sure fooled those idiots, Marlene moves on to getting Andy out of the country, Andy is ok with that, they all should go but Marlene isn't ready to abandon everything, ok so he'll leave without her, with what money Rebeca says, as Andy realizes his money is gone, and puts a choke hold on Rebeca, you'll get your money when the job is done Marlene says, you're a suicidal maniac, Andy replies, and goes to leave anyway, but Marlene slaps him, (his face says this is something new)
Marlene apologizes, she was upset, he says they are alone, she says they have allies, Javier, Elsa, Monteverdes, they are cowards Andy says, that's why I have you and Rebeca to keep them in line, you can act on my behalf, Andy is tired and crawls into bed in his uniform, Marlene leaves.
Aristobulo Zepeda has one last question, will you tell the police about our conversation, what do you think, says Eva, he responds, good answer, you're like me, and leaves.
Marcos, Pardo, Pablo and Martin investigate at the hospital, Pablo smells perfume, the guard was knocked out by neck injection (haven't seen one of those since "Santa Diablo") and Pardo turns up a nurses credentials were stolen, they peg Marlene and Rebeca doing the job, Fajardo wants Dominguez to check all of Andy's known hangouts, and Pardo to keep tabs on Marlene, as Eva calls about the narco, he'll be right there, Pablo wants to go to but Martin nixes the idea.
JJ and Enrique have his Ex's place staked out, JJ talking naughty on the phone with Marisol who's laying in bed waiting for him, when the ex shows up with a boyfriend, and so it's off to work taking pictures as they smooch outside the house. getting closer and closer till she spots them (or was it the flash that gave them away), it's not what it seems, as she sics her boyfriend after the camera, but they get away.
Robert's recovering at the hospital, wants Cinthia to call her son, she doesn't want to have to explain and she doesn't want him seeing her as a murderer.
Eva tells Fajardo everything, he pull out some pictures, she picks out Cepeda, this guy is bad news, and Eva discovers Andy has escaped, will he come after Camila again?
Marlene arrives home as Armando is relaxing with a drink, he keeps baiting her and they go a few rounds, she thinks it's pathetic that he thinks protecting a woman that hates him will bring her back, she's a hillbilly, where I have class, Armando laughs, calls her a glorified whore, as the sexual tension builds, nope, doesn't work anymore he says, you even smell bad.
Armando goes on, he will keep on protecting Eva and his girls, they are his family, if you mess with them I will kill you, she threatens him back, there is a knock at the door, it's Pardo, come to search the house, Marlene is surprised, Armando not so much, what?, and no Andy so Fajardo says to bring them in.
part 2
it's morning.as Eva leaves for the police station, while JJ and Enrique bring Virginia news of the pictures.
Pablo is asleep next to Diego's bed, Ana can't resist touching him, he awakes, she apologizes, he goes for a hug, they kiss, (and I can picture Eva's face appearing in the door window) Diego awakes, when are you going to decide who your girlfriend is, this is confusing.
Luis and Adri talk on their bed, he wants to go back to school, she's surprised as he hates math, he wants to run the business better, and you, Adri wants to be an architect, as Cinthia calls, should I go he asks, it sounds serious, ok, if it's another trap this will be the last time he tells Adri.
Pablo is back at the office, Diego is good he tells Martin, and wants to know about Eva, professional interest he adds, and gets the scoop on Aristobulo Zepeda, and ponders if the police don't get her, the cartel will.
Robert thinks kids are for your retirement, why else have them, Cinthia reflects on how things started out bad, stealing a baby, and they are paying for it now.
Enrique and Virginia show the pics to Pablo, they wants a divorce NOW so they can marry.
Eva arrives at the police station, to meet Marlene (who must have returned home last night since she is now wearing yellow) and her lawyer in the interrogation room, Eva states that Zepeda said Marlene was his business partner, Marlene accuses Eva of making things up because Eva hates her, yep I hate you but I wouldn't make things up for anyone.
Fajardo throws in that Florentino's prints where on the drugs they recovered, and he made various trips to Mexico for Mon-Sol.
so Eva leaves, but Marlene can't.
Luis hands Robert his hospital bill, paid in full, Robert says Luis is heartless for not even asking how he is, Luis says he has feelings, disappointment.
Javier and Elsa have packed the car, it's off to Toronto, but it's cold up there Javier says, not as cold as jail or 6 feet under, Elsa adds, but wait, is that a pop up doll in the back seat, nope, it's Rebeca wearing a tilted wig, gun in hand, she says drive.
Robert accuses Luis of leaving them for money, something more important Luis says, Love, Robert calls him a moron, sure to lose everything,
Rebeca takes Javier and Elsa to what looks like an abandoned farm, she was supposed to meet them to get something from Mon-Sol for Marlene, but the plans have changed, she wants to play a game, she will pick a number between one and five and if Javier chooses wrong he's dead, and as Elsa objects, Javier makes a slo-mo run for it, slo-mo Rebeca casualy raises her pistol and...
Silva runs everyone down with his monologue and Fajardo says ok, that's enough for today, you can go, but I'll be seeing you soon.
at the office Virginia tells Eva she shouldn't be working, Enrique shows up with the signed divorce, he is free, they smooch, and he owes it all to Pablo, who steps in to take a bow, was Eva thinking, what's with this guy, as Virginia drags Enrique out of the room.
Marlene and Armando make it back to his office, only to find Zepeda in his chair (who gave all the employees the afternoon off), what? I told you what happened Marlene says, but I liked your enemies version better, he says, pay me for my merc and troubles, triple, as his two guys come in drawing their guns and Armando gets a full dose of Marlene's real world.
Terrific recap, deb! Thanks very much!
I enjoyed your "(or was it the flash that gave them away)". What's with those guys? Surely there must be some cameras these days that can take photos at night without a flash? Since so much of JJ's work involves photo surveillance, I'm surprised he doesn't have such a camera or device or whatever. He and Enrique came perilously close to being caught and perhaps beaten up, all because the flash gave them away.
Even though I knew it was early in the morning, I half expected Eva to pop up while Pablo and SweetFace were kissing at Diego's bedside. (To paraphrase the Geico commercial, that's what she does, she pops up.)
Loved Diego's remark to Pablo about deciding which one is his novia. I also loved the fact that SweetFace didn't love it.
Hmmm...so Adri wants to be an architect. I keep thinking of novelera's comment yesterday about wishing that Adri and Luis would have some time before becoming parents. I agree, though apparently the writers feel differently.
I loved your "but wait, is that a pop up doll in the back seat, nope, it's Rebeca." And she's not the only pop-up doll in this episode/novela: there's also Pop-Up Pablo.
I know that in novelas, characters can sometimes teleport between continents in minutes. Does Novela Time also apply to divorces? JJ takes photos of Enrique's still-legally-married wife, and the next morning Pablo gets Enrique his signed and sealed divorce. Huh??
SpanProf, thanks for reminding me about Eva's description of Armando as not bright enough for Marlene's drug activities. Yes, I loved that, too.
Eva Soler doesn’t scare easily. I really enjoyed her interaction with Cepeda. My Spanish recaps spelled his name with a C. Not sure which is correct. Anyway Eva impressed the guy, and he believed her.
Marlene and evil twin Rebeca have decided to keep Andy’s money until Marlene “recoups her hard earned” money. Wow!
Robert, wow, just wow, he hinted that because Pancho and Soraya were “nacos” they were run off the road. That was some look Luis gave him. I do feel a tiny bit sorry for Cinthia. She’s lost all hope of a relationship with the child she wanted so badly.
I concur in the assessment that the fastest divorce in California ever was pretty lame.
When Armando is being interviewed by Fajardo he agrees, looking right at Marlene, that whoever planted those drugs deserves serious jail time.
I suspect Andy’s blood money is going to be used to pay off Cepeda. Not sure what 30% of a shipment of drugs is worth, whether $100,000 would even cover it.
SpanProf, you're so right about Pablo's behavior. He just isn't loyal galán material! OK, when he got Eva a second trial and an acquittal, plus helping all the rest of the Furias, he was in hero mode. But lately his behavior is juvenile at best. Maybe they will go with the hint in the musical intro, Eva walks away from both of them while her theme song plays.
Siervo is able to help Candela out of the pit and she runs back to the river.
Paca helps Ana get dressed (her bruises and cuts are mostly gone now). Felipe walks into the room because Paca accidentally left the door open, not knowing that Ana was only half-dressed. He rushes back outside, but he has something important to talk to her about.
Francisco, who apparently reeks of alcohol, talks to the Padre. He claims Ana ran way and is conviviendo (living with) another man, but of course doesn’t mention that he beat her. The Padre complains about the lack of morals in the town.
Candela finally returns to the river and Milagros concocts a story that she was with her lover, another slave at a different hacienda. Julian is angry, but Milagros remarks quién en la vida no ha hecho una locura por amor (who in life hasn’t done something crazy for love) which calms him down.
Felipe gets right to the point – he asks Ana why she called her husband a murderer. She admits that she heard Francisco talking with a friend about the killing of the freed slaves, but she won’t tell Felipe who the friend was because her life corre peligro (is in danger), and Felipe’s life is too. Paca interrupts with news of the Padre’s arrival, who wants to talk to Ana.
In Santa Marta, Remedios is too hot and says she can’t stand the heat anymore. She will meet up with Victoria and Adela at the inn after they run their errands (so she can go off to talk to Eugenia). Adela makes a joke about the renga (crippled).
The Padre can’t understand why Ana left Francisco. Felipe gets annoyed and asks why she would want to go back to a murderer. Ana explains that Francisco almost beat her to death. The Padre remarks that all marriages have ups and downs but they have to respect the marriage contract made with God. Ana continues that Francisco abused her, physically and verbally, for years and the Padre just says that God never mandar una tarea que no puedas cumplir (sends a task that you can’t accomplish). Francisco still loves her and her place is with him. [Ughhhhh please make this Padre go away!] She repeats that she is not going back to him. He finally leaves. Felipe apologizes for saying murderer. Ana is upset and leaves the room.
Back in her room, she asks Paca to help her loosen the back of her dress because she’s having ahogo (difficulty breathing). Felipe follows her in the room, and offers to help. She lets him untie the ribbons. She thinks that he thinks she is a coward for not denouncing Francisco. Felipe explains that in his fight against injustice, he lost the person he loved the most, Catalina. He regrets getting giving her ideas and pressuring her, and he’s not going to do that to Ana. He just wants her to know that she can count on him for whatever she needs. She hugs him, with tears in her eyes.
Eugenia is really angry about the change of plans. Bunme informs her that the men want to be paid upfront, but she was planning on paying them after the robbery. She decides to lead the men herself and dresses up like a bandit. Bunme is worried that things will go badly, but Eugenia is confident she’ll be able to pull it off. She kisses Bunme goodbye.
Isabel guilt-trips Nicolas into spending time with her, after he says he has to take the shipment to the port. He proposes something better: Isabel is coming with him. Nicolas orders Julian to stay behind to watch the slaves, while Miguel and Trinidad, and another guard will go with the cargo.
Eugenia tells the men not to hurt anyone. They cover their faces and head to the road. On the cart, Miguel tells Trinidad not to resist if anything happens along the way. The men jump out of the woods with guns drawn. Eugenia stands by a tree and doesn’t actually participate. Nicolas begs them not to hurt Isabel. They take off with the cargo AND Isabel.
Adela talks to the Padre about having a mass in Isabel’s honor (something that Victoria suggested earlier). The whole time he and Victoria are looking at each other, and he remembers finding her as a child in the church and grown Victoria telling him who she really was. Adela can tell he’s not really listening, but thinks it’s the heat. El cura está igual que la lisiada (The priest is like the cripple). She asks Victoria if the heat is getting to her too. Victoria responds, staring directly at the Padre, he estado imaginandome como debe ser fingir frente a todos que uno está con Dios cuando por otro lado vive lejos de él sin remordimiento (I was imagining how it must be to pretend to be with God in front of everyone when you actually live far from him without remorse). The Padre is uncomfortable and makes an excuse to leave.
While still escaping with the cargo, Eugenia yells at the men that they were not supposed to hurt anyone. Isabel keeps calling for help, so they finally throw her off the horse and she rolls down the hill. Eugenia screams no!
Remedios is at the inn talking to Gabriel and the new doctor. He offers to look at her leg. As he’s inspecting under her skirt, Adela and Victoria walk up and Adela stops abruptly: Por los clavos de cristo (For Christ’s sake), every time I come here, I see something immoral. Remedios introduces her to Dr. Tarazona. Victoria takes Gabriel aside to talk about Isabel’s party. Adela notices Abdul and Lorenza walk in, and asks out loud why they’re still there. No saben que nadie los quiere en Santa Marta (Don’t you know that nobody wants you in Santa Marta)? Abdul and Adela continue exchanging words while Lorenza and Victoria look at each other silently, neither one recognizing the other but they’re both affected by it.
Lorenza doesn’t want to be there anymore. Abdul claims they have debts so they have to stay and work. She asks what happened to the savings. Abdul gets even more aggressive. If she thinks about leaving, he’ll say that she’s his slave and she will be caught. Would she prefer for him to just leave her alone with no memories and no money and no one to take care of her?
Miguel finds Isabel crying near the road. She hurt her ankle. Nicolas carries her back to El Eden.
Eugenia yells at the men again. The guard who was traveling with the cargo is tied to a tree; he seems to be unconscious.
Adela complains to the Padre about Lorenza.
Tomas talks to Milagros in the kitchen. She refers to Julian as a herramienta (tool) they can use. Tomas asks if that’s all he means to her. He warns her to be prepared for the consequences of playing with someone’s emotions, especially since Julian is paid by Nicolas.
Siervo wanders through the tunnel with the tools. He finds the part that caved in. He throws his torch on the ground, angry at the huge rocks blocking the path.
Eugenia returns home, first angry that Isabel was involved, but then happy that everything turned out fine. She tells Bunme to give Alonso the good news.
The three women arrive at El Eden at the same time as the men are bringing Isabel back. Miguel tells Victoria that it was a disaster. Isabel wants Nicolas to promise that no one will leave the house since it’s so dangerous out. She doesn’t want a doctor either.
Victoria tells Remedios to ask Milagros to prepare something to drink for Isabel and to meet her outside with Miguel and Tomas.
Milagros tells Julian that the Marquesa asked her to take food to Siervo and that Julian accompany her, for safety. Before he leaves, Candela asks him about Diosdado and Hilaria. He answers that Hilaria was sold to the mines like she wanted. Outside, Milagros convinces Julian to calm down since he hated lying about Hilaria and he was still a little upset about their conversation at the river. They agree not to think about children now. He stays by the tree while she delivers food to Siervo, who tells her there is no way the shovels and picks are going to be enough to move those huge rocks out of the way.
Nicolas tells Adela that all of the men were white, and Isabel adds that the one who seemed to be giving the orders was a woman.
Eugenia has a drink with Alonso and the General to celebrate their investment. Alonso says they still need to buy the material, but Eugenia says no need, I already did.
Outside, Remedios remarks qué racha de malos acontecimientos (what a streak of bad events). Miguel says it would take too long to break up the rocks with the tools they have. Tomas reveals that he used to work in the mines before he met Lorenza (Milagros didn’t know this), and they used pólvora (gunpowder) to break up the rocks. They could get some from the port, but it’s very expensive. Even if they do get it, how can make sure no one hears the explosions? Victoria has an idea.
Los fuegos artificiales (Fireworks)? Yes, Isabel must have them for her birthday party! Adela thinks they are a waste of money, but Nicolas agrees to them. Anything for his beloved daughter. He takes Victoria outside and thanks her for helping Isabel. She asks what he’s going to do about the robbery. He will report it, but he doesn’t think it will do much good.
Miguel is glad that nothing happened to Isabel. He wouldn’t be able to deal with the guilt otherwise. Trinidad comments that it’s no big deal if a white person dies. He goes off on how Miguel’s relationship with the Marquesa is the main problem. Miguel tells him to watch his mouth because that’s his woman, and Tomas adds that she’s his daugther. Blanco es blanco (white is white), Trinidad says. Miguel has had enough of his attitude. They keep arguing while Tomas tells them to lower their voices, but Julian comes over and asks what’s going on.
that was a good episode and a wonderful recap to match, thanks so much J!
loved the scene where Lorenza and Victoria see each other, Victoria was fading in and out, and Lorenza was just as affected, and Abdul gets worse every day.
touching, Ana and Felipe, they are so much alike and yet so different.
how long before Nicolas figures it's Eugenia, that took his cacao?
thanks everyone for your comments!
I have trouble with names so I pulled Zepeda out of the cast list but it was coming up Cepeda in the captions.
J, thanks so much for another extraordinary recap. It helped me to understand some parts that puzzled me. And I'm always grateful that you include so many Spanish phrases.
I was under the impression that Victoria may have recognized Lorenza, but after reading your recap, I think what you say makes better sense, namely, that neither actually recognized the other, but both were somehow affected by their presence.
J- Thank you for such a fantastic recap.
The fireworks for the birthday (providing both the needed gunpowder and the noise to cover the explosion) is one of Victoria's better ideas. I still don't get how they think they'll be able able to stealthily abscond with ALL the slaves and sail away without getting caught, but I'm willing to put my telenovela beanie on.
What I really don't get is how Eugenia thinks her theft of the cacao will be kept a secret from her associates (surely, they'll hear about the theft and put 1 and 1 together and get 2), or from Nicolas. I hope she can pull it off, though. I have only seen parts of episodes here and there, so I was quite surprised to learn this episode that she and Bunme are a couple.
I wanted to slap the priest when he was speaking to Ana, and thoroughly enjoyed his discomfort under Victoria's burning gaze. I was surprised by how at ease Ana seemed when Felipe was unlacing her gown. That is a VERY intimate thing for a man to do for a woman. Same when Remedios let the Doc examine her and raise up her skirts right there in public. I was with Adela in being scandalized. LOL!
Trinidad is a time-bomb waiting to go off and ruin everything for everyone. Miguel needs to find a way to connect with him, because this macho posturing between the two of them is just going to lead to disaster. There's too much at stake for all of that. Also not looking forward to how Julian might react when he learns Milagros has been using/playing him.
Nice to hear from you, Vivi. And much thanks to J. Your recaps are SO comprehensive!
I'm glad to hear you also are worried about Trinidad. He's been bothering me since the beginning of the novela.
Vivi, Milagros does love Julián. She started out using him to distract him from the actions of La Causa, and fell for him.
Novelera- That's precisely why I'm worried. It's going to hurt them BOTH terribly when he finds out how she's been using him-- he'll be beyond hurt and ticked off, and will react in a way that will also break her heart.
