Shipping these two so hard, but alas and alack, it's not meant to be! What a waste and what a shame! |
At a glance
-- Ricardo learns that Esperanza has stage 4 stomach cancer and, instead of showing sympathy, he makes it all about him.
-- Cristina breaks up with Ricardo because she feels he should be with his dying ex-fiancée who, just 9 weeks ago, was the love of Ricardo's life, by his own admission. Ricardo says he now loves Cristina and wants to be with her.
A closer look
Margarita is suddenly very popular in Sueñolandia. She has become everyone’s best friend slash confidante slash surrogate mother. At the end of her visit to Casa Guerrero, Margarita tells Esperanza she has her full support and offers to accompany her to her chemotherapy sessions. She gives her la bendición, praying that the Holy Cross descend from heaven and stretch over Esperanza’s body, defending her from any evil and danger that may befall her.
On her way out, Margarita receives a phone call. It’s Cristina Vélez Valderrama (CVV). She is desperate to see Margarita, whom she considers her “only friend”.
Ricardo visits Casa Guerrero to confirm what he suspected ever since he saw Esperanza minus her long luscious locks. When she announces she has cancer, he flexes his jaw but doesn’t look any more impactado than he already was. He even said, before Esperanza's annoucement, that “the hair thing has only one explanation”, so no surprise there, really. He asks permission to go in. Pato and Pedro scram to let the grown-ups talk.
At the constructora, Anastasia, who had a personality transplant overnight, admits to Luca that she doesn't know who the father of her baby is. She confesses that she paid someone to tamper with the DNA results but she doesn’t know whether the results were indeed falsified. The person who was supposed to do it died before letting her know if they got the job done. Therefore, a new DNA test is needed to determine who is Baby Luca’s daddy.
Erasmo confides to Jerónimo his interest in Anastasia, as well as her turbulent past. He even whips out his new cellphone to show him a photo of Anastasia eating marshmallows off Luca’s scrawny body. Jerónimo asks on behalf of himself and all others listening to Erasmo’s nonsense: “Did your brain cells melt?”
Estrella, her little brother, Adrián and his ex-stalker slash rapist slash baby mama slash stepsister decide to unite against Paulo Rey and his evil posse. Salma suggests they call themselves the “Galactic Four”. Estrella corrects her: “Galactic Five”. Oh right, the baby is using his power of invisibility, jokes Salma. It’s very awkward that there is no awkwardness in this love square! All the tension, animosity, jealousy and discomfort vanished practically overnight and now these four are just two couples of dear old friends that go on double dates everyday and everywhere!
Silvana is cleaning Napoleón’s place. He informs her that she can go back to Instituto Palacios tomorrow. The narcissistic voices in her head imagine the grand return of Silvana Fierro.
In the living room of Casa Guerrero, Esperanza tells Ricardo she has stage 4 stomach cancer and was given 6 months to live. Ricardo figures the 6 months are now less, correct? Yes, genius! confirms Esperanza.
At Casa Vélez Valderrama, Margarita greets Abril and asks her if she remembers her. She does: “You’re Margarita! Are you mom’s friend?” “No, I’m more than a friend. I’m like her mother!” CVV and her proxy mommy send Abril to her room so they might talk at their ease. CVV can’t deal with the uncertainty (incertidumbre). She fell madly in love with Ricardo and she is terrified of losing him.
Back at Casa Guerrero, Esperanza tells Ricardo her doctor gave her the diagnosis on the day of the wedding. “And the first thing that occurred to you was to have Pedro tell me that our wedding is cancelled?”, reproaches Ricardo. And the first thing that occurred to you upon hearing that your ex-fiancée has stage 4 cancer and might die, is to talk about yourself, bozo? How about a little sympathy? How about a little “Sorry this is happening. What can I do for you?” Esperanza replies: “No, Ricardo. That wasn’t the first thing that crossed my mind. Pain, worry and doubt clouded my mind (nublar la mente). My kids were with me when I received the news. The doctor told me I needed to get emergency surgery and that’s why I left the Palacios for 2 weeks”. Ricardo is still determined to make this all about him: “And you decided to hide it from me! You decided that I did not deserve to be part of this, that I did not have to learn anything and that you were going to hide it all from me!” Me, me, me! There is a time for everything, including the reproaches that Esperanza deserves. However, what does it say about a person when they can only think about themselves after they receive the terrible news that an acquaintance, friend or loved one has cancer? Esperanza’s eyes fill with tears. “Ricardo, can you give me a moment please?” “Yes. Sorry”. He helps her get up. “The chemo sessions are devastating. Pardon me.” she says. “Do you need something?” Finally! A small measure of compassion! “I just need to breathe for a bit”, she replies as tears roll down her cheeks. Ricardo sits back down, still under the shock. He dries his misty eyes and tries to pull himself together. Pato comes into the living room and asks where her mother is. “In her room” he replies. “I just want you to know that this is the hardest thing we ever had to go through and that it was never our intention to hurt you” says Pato before scurrying away to check on her mom.
CVV recounts how much she “connected” with Ricardo during their romantic getaway in Cuernavaca. Margarita oohs at the juicy details. CVV says that she and Ricardo told each other “I love you”. Everything was pure bliss until they came back and found Esperanza with her shaved head. It’s gotta be cancer, that’s why CVV asked Ricardo to go talk to Esperanza. If she has cancer then Ricardo must be with her, concludes CVV. Margarita tells her not to get ahead of herself. “But Esperanza is the love of Ricardo’s life!” protests CVV, “How would he not want to be with her at a time like this?” Margarita advises her not to make any assumptions. As for that “love of his life” thing, that’s not as sure as CVV thinks. Esperanza and Ricardo never got married and Ricardo told CVV he loves her. CVV says maybe he felt compelled to say it because she said it first. Margarita assures her that Ricardo is not that kind of guy. CVV says he was jealous of Esperanza and Ernesto at the double wedding and, now that he found out she is ill, he’s not gonna want to leave her. And this hurts CVV deeply. She cries pretty tears on Margarita’s lap.
Paulo Rey goes looking for Estrella and Kiko in their neighborhood. He tells his posse: “If you are loyal to me, you can enjoy full access to my dad’s yachts and mansions!” How about you enjoy full access to your dad’s yachts and mansions instead of wasting your time bullying people for no reason?
Esperanza is back in the living room. Ricardo asks her how she is feeling. She says she’d like to explain everything to him right away but she is too tired now. Ricardo understands but he wants to know one thing: “Why?” He apologizes immediately and reckons it’s better for him to go. Esperanza apologizes for this and for everything. She would like to discuss things further but she is nauseous right now. Ricardo would like to continue their conversation tomorrow. He has a world of doubts and he would like to know why Esperanza did this to him. Ernesto shows up at Casa Guerrero. He stares daggers at Ricardo who glares back at him. Esperanza preemptively instructs them to chill: “This is my house. Please respect it and don’t fight! Besides, I’m not feeling well at all”. Ernesto rushes to her side and asks what happened. She says it’s been a tough day and she’s been feeling weak. “It’s better than I get going” announces Ricardo. Ernesto agrees that would be best. Ricardo leaves. “I need to lie down” says Esperanza. Ernesto takes her hand: “Let’s go, my love!” She leans on him for support and he takes her to her room.
Pedro reads that chinese weevils (gorgojos chinos), when swallowed alive, can cure cancerous cells.
Luca is at Casa Guerrero to tell Pato about Anastasia and the possibly false DNA test. Both suspect Anastasia is up to no good. Luca admits that he had grown very fond of Baby Luca and he would prefer it if he were indeed his son.
Paulo destroys the Gallos’ lemonade stand and throws a viscous tar-like substance on them. “Why are the poor always getting picked on?” cries out Estrella, in dramatic fashion, in the middle of the street, to noone in particular. OK, maybe to La Virgencita de la Paz but it’s never good to lash out at one’s deities, that's why Estrella’s complaint didn't have an addressee.
At a side street taquería, Jerónimo teases Erasmo for his pathetic taste in women. When Anastasia joins them Jerónimo takes off. Anastasia is too preoccupied to dig into her tacos al pastor. She sings Erasmo her De la Colina Baby blues. Erasmo can see that the fair señorita wants to change. “Is it too late?” she asks. It’s never too late to change for the better, insists Erasmo.
Ricardo tells his new girlfriend that his old girlfriend has stage 4 stomach cancer. Impactada face and pretty tears.
At Casa Guerrero, Esperanza is lying in bed with different clothes on. Did Ernesto help her out of her uniform and into that zesty orange ensemble? I know it’s unlikely but can’t a girl fantasize a bit? Esperanza says she feels guilty: “I don’t know if I did well in hiding my illness from Ricardo. And now, surely, I’ll be causing problems between him and Cristina. What did I do? Lord, what am I doing?” Ernesto says her name in a pleading voice. “I’m confused! I feel bad!” Ernesto interjects: “Esperanza!”, this time sounding mildly irked. Esperanza continues whinging: “At what moment did it occur to me to shave my head and let Ricardo see me like this?” “Esperanza!” yells Ernesto. This one reflected his (and our) exasperation and felt more like an abridged: “For the love of Crunchie, just shut up, Esperanza!” He sits on her bed, takes her hand in his and tells her that, at this moment in time, the only thing that matters is her, her life and her recovery. Nothing else matters. Not Ricardo, not Cristina, not Ernesto. Nobody! Esperanza must focus on living. She must direct all her strength and efforts towards healing her body from the cancer. Stress and anxiety aggravate her health crisis. “You’re the one that matters! Your life is the only thing that’s important”. Aww, isn’t he a puppy?
Ricardo tells CVV that the oncologist visited Esperanza a few hours before the wedding and told her she had 6 months to live. CVV can’t deal with this. It makes her feel 10 times worse than the time she thought Esperanza was pregnant. Ricardo assures her that he meant what he said in Cuernavaca: He luuuurves her! He can’t be away from her! She says she can’t stand to look at him, kiss him or tell him she loves him, knowing that Esperanza has cancer and might die. CVV believes that Esperanza needs Ricardo and, for some reason, she must’ve felt compelled to hide her illness from him. “I can’t be that inhuman and selfish as to stand between the two of you!” concludes CVV, weeping prettily and with abandon. She has decided to break up with Ricardo. He protests: “We are talking about assumptions here. I don’t know what happened exactly. All I know is that the day of the wedding, Esperanza was diagnosed with cancer!” And he still can’t put two and two together. Either he is stupid or he acts like it. “If you really love me” begins CVV. “Yes, I love you!” interjects Tricky Ricky. “Then go! Talk to her! Don’t hurt her! Do it for me, please!” She escorts him to the front door and cries more pretty tears after he leaves.
Back at Casa Guerrero, Esperanza’s auto-flagellation is in full swing: “I did a lot of things without thinking about the consequences!” Ernesto puts what happened in perspective: “You
are about to get married and a doctor comes and tells you that you have
six months to live. Esperanza, do you expect to be able to make
clear-headed decisions? You’ve just learnt you have stomach cancer! How
would anyone [in your position] react?” He also reminds her that her decision to hide her illness from Ricardo was taken at a difficult time but it was made thinking about Ricardo. It was a decision borne out of love. Esperanza says she doesn’t want to destroy the relationship between Ricardo and CVV. Ernesto points out that only Ricardo and CVV can decide over their own relationship. “I know Ricardo! I know him! I know he would want to be with me! Even if all the things that happened of late mean he no longer loves me! Even if he now loves Cristina! Ricardo is gonna want to be with me and help me!” Oh, I wouldn’t hold my breath, darling! “I’m not the right person to give you advice about this because, if it were up to me, I would want Ricardo far away from here” says Ernesto. Esperanza is aware that she must concentrate on her health but she also has to think about others, including her kids, Ricardo, CVV... “And you. You who has done so much for me!” Ernesto assures her that he has done it all because he loves her and because he loves being with her. “You are the reason for my life... And I’m not making any sacrifices here!” Esperanza decides that tomorrow she will tell Ricardo to carry on with his life and be happy with CVV. Because she doesn’t need or want him in her life.
Luca and Pato fawn over each other. They vow to love each other, support one another, forget about the past and exchange many many kisses. Pato admits that she wants to take their kissing to the next level. They agree to have their first session of sexy time tomorrow. Pato asks Luca if he’ll be patient with her because tomorrow would be her first time. He promises he’ll take care of her and treat her like his most precious treasure.
At Casa Manzanares, Félix makes a fuss over Margarita coming home late. She says she is going through a difficult time and she needs understanding, not reproaches. Besides, she will not permit that he turn their home into a prison or treat her this way. She orders him to grab his pillow, cover and plush toy and head to the living room. He’ll be sleeping on the couch tonight! ¡Órale!
At Casa Alegría, Andrés tells Ricardo it’s a privilege to take care of his kids. It’s worth noting that Andrés continues to address Ricardo as Sir or Agente, using the formal “usted” form, even though Tricky Ricky quit his job as a super duper agent. Andrés says he and his wife, Mireya, can’t have children but they are considering adoption. When Ricardo is left alone, he reviews his women trouble and puts on a sad face.
Back at Casa Manzanares, Margarita prays for Esperanza and Cristina. Félix comes in and apologizes for his behavior. He promises to be more félix-ible from now on. Margarita accepts his apology and specifies that the only rule that must exist in their home is unconditional love.
Anastasia drops Erasmo off. He tells her all the good things that the De la Colinas, Father and Son, did for the Gallo family. Anastasia gives him a lingering kiss goodbye on the cheek. She thinks out loud: “I don’t know what's happening to me with this guy!”
Margarita tells Félix about the troubles of the Esperanza-Ricardo-CVV triangle of love, lies and disloyalty. She figures the trio will have to make important decisions soon. In any case, one of the three, if not all of the three, will come out of this very hurt, she predicts.
At Casa Gallo, Erasmo learns what happened to his siblings. He swears he would’ve kicked Paulo’s behind (partirle su mandrina en gajos a alguien) had he been present. Estrella and Kiko say they’ll fix their lemonade stand soon, then they show Erasmo the video where Kiko was walking, during his physiotherapy session. Erasmo is moved to tears. Their parents are looking out for them from the great beyond. He tells his siblings how proud he is of them and vows to do his best to help them get ahead in life. ¡Abrazo Gallo! Rooster hug!
The next morning, at Instituto Palacios, Esperanza tells her pupils that she has cancer. Salma wonders: Will the maestra be able to recover from it or... Will she die? continues Kiko. Bravo, kids! Way to cheer up your gravely-ill teacher!
A quote from the capítulo

*Ernesto explains the rationale behind Esperanza’s dumb post-diagnosis decisions: “You are about to get married and a doctor comes and tells you that you have six months to live. Esperanza, do you expect to be able to make clear-headed decisions? You’ve just learnt you have stomach cancer! How would anyone [in your position] react?”
